Galt MacDermotCotton Comes To Harlem ... LP
United Artists, 1972. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A funky classic from Galt MacDermot! The record is Galt's score for the blacksploitation film that starred Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St Jacques – and it's a mix of vocal and instrumental tunes that takes off from the sound of his late 60s work. Melba Moore sings on a few cuts – and others have lyrics sung by George Tipton, Sakinah, Leta Galloway, and Denise Dillpena, mostly in a early 70s pop soul sort of mode. The instrumentals are actually the best bits, though – with those odd little rhythms that Galt could hit when he really wanted to! Titles include "Man In Distress", "Harlem Medley", "Black Enough", "Stockyard", "Deke", "Ed & Digger", "Coffin Ed & Gravedigger", and "Harlem By Day".

Galt MacDermotGalt MacDermot In Film 1969 – 1973 ... LP
Kilmarnock/Stones Throw, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $13.99
Mad funk from the great Galt MacDermot – a wonderful selection of obscure tunes from some of his best funky soundtracks! Galt's work on Hair has been sampled heavily by a variety of hip hop producers over the years – but even better is his work for less famous soundtracks, a good variety of which are sampled here in a wonderfully-done set that focuses on the truly funky tracks that Galt wrote for these films – and which gets past the sometimes-off tracks that can occasionally get in the way of his lesser soundtracks. The package is a total jam throughout – filled with tunes that have weird rhythms, moody keyboards, and the kind of offbeat approach to funk that's always made his work so great. There's only a few tracks from previously reissued soundtracks like Woman Is Sweeter and Cotton Comes To Harlem – plus lots lots more from weirder films that include American Express, Nucleus, Fortune & Men's Eyes, Moon Over The Alley, and Rhinoceros! In true Galt MacDermot funky fashion, there's lots of great drum work on the set from Bernard Purdie – and titles include "Golden Apples", "Dead End", "Fragments II", "Tango", "Ed & Digger", "Duffer", "Bedroom", "Queenie's Theme", "Fortune & Men's Eyes" and "Rhinoceros Theme".

Galt MacDermotHair – Original Broadway Cast Recording ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good+ .... $2.99
One of the most influential musical moments of the 60s – Hair! Hair not only forever changed the concept of musical theater on Broadway, but it also gave the world an incredible array of groovy tunes with odd rhythms – and made a place for composer Galt MacDermot to continue his musical experiments for years to come – eventually influencing a generation of beatheads and hip hoppers as a result! This package features the official Broadway recording of the score – with singers who include Ronnie Dyson, Diane Keaton, and Melba Moore! Titles include "Aquarius", "Where Do I Go", "My Conviction", "Frank Mills", "Be In", "Abie Baby", "Colored Spade", and "Air".

Galt MacDermotHair – Original Movie Soundtrack – Special Anniversary Edition ... CD
RCA, 1979. Used .... $2.99
A surprisingly great little soundtrack for the film version of Hair – re-arranged and musically directed by Galt MacDermot himself! There's a smoother, slicker feel to the tunes than heard on the Broadway soundtrack – with lots of nice 70s electric touches, and, if anything, a refinement of Galt's spacious approach to rhythms. There's more than a bit of funk on the set, and musicians in the group include Bernard Purdie, Wilbur Bascomb, Cornell Dupree, and Galt himself! 2LPs worth of tracks, and titles include "I Got Life", "Party Music", "Aquarius", "Sodomy", "Manchester", "Colored Spade", "Air", "I'm Black/Ain't Got No", "Where Do I Go", "Black Boys", "Walking In Space", "Easy To Be Hard", "Good Morning Sunshine", and "What A Piece Of Work Is Man".

new Galt MacDermotMore From The Basement – Unreleased Tracks Vol 2 ... LP
Kilmarnock, 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $9.99
Funky madness from the mind of Galt MacDermot – the second volume of rare work from his deep deep vaults! Galt's best known to most of the world as the man who wrote the music for Hair, but to us beatheads, the best stuff is his rare work – a wealth of incredible drumbreaks, basslines, piano riffs, and quirky rhythms – recorded for years on his own, finally now getting out to the public! This album's almost better than the first volume – as it's filled with stripped down instrumental cuts that feature plenty of drums (by either Idris Muhammad or Bernard Purdie), electric keyboards, and other instrumentation like flute or guitar. A few cuts have vocals, but even those are nice and funky – and honestly, the album's maybe even better all the way through than most of Galt's classic albums from the old days! Titles include "Ba Ba Black Baby", "Lost Dreams", "Ghetto Suite Medley", "DD 2 03", "Wurly", "Water Fight", and "Cleanly & Pump".

new Galt MacDermotShapes Of Rhythm ... LP
Kilmarnock, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $8.99
Nice nice reissue of one of the greatest records to come out of Galt MacDermot's legendary Kilmarnock label! The album's a weird off-kilter batch of jazzy instrumentals, with Galt playing acoustic and electric piano – and with backing by a tight little combo that includes Pretty Purdie on drums, Snag Napoleon Allan on guitar, and Jimmy Lewis on bass. Lewis' bass is especially nice, and he lays out some very phat lines next to Galt's groovy piano solos. The record's not an all-out funk classic, but it's got some wonderfully warm rolling riffs in the typical Galt MacDermot style. Titles include "Coffee Cold", which was sampled by Prince Paul, "The Mouse Roared", "Mbabam", "Marsh Gas", "Alive In Dar Es Salaam", and "Spanish Night".

Galt MacDermotShapes Of Rhythm/Woman Is Sweeter ... CD
Kilmarnock, Late 60s. New Copy .... $12.99 15.98
2 killers from the legendary Galt MacDermot – composer, jazz musician, and hero to beatheads and samplers everywhere! First up is Shapes Of Rhythm – a weird off-kilter batch of jazzy instrumentals, with Galt playing acoustic and electric piano – and with backing by a tight little combo that includes Pretty Purdie on drums, Snag Napoleon Allan on guitar, and Jimmy Lewis on bass. Woman Is Sweeter is an excellent funky soundtrack – and features the totally cool sample for Buster Rhymes' big single last year, laid out in the track "Space". Lots of other cool spare funky tunes abound, and the set is a great record all the way through, with loads of weird flatly funky tunes and offbeat rhythms. Titles include "Tango", "Woman Is Sweeter", "Perfume Bottles", "Merry Go Round", "Princess Gika", and "Bathtub". CD also includes a bonus version of "Coffee Cold"!

new Galt MacDermotUp From The Basement – Unreleased Tracks Vol 1 ... LP
Kilmarnock, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $9.99
The best funky album you could ever find by Galt MacDermot! Unlike some of Galt's other records, which have a few funky tracks and some other ones that aren't as great, this hand-picked collection is funky all the way through – and every cut's a monster! All the work still has that great offbeat sound that you'd expect from Galt's funky soundtracks –- and the playing is tight and funky, ver much in a classic early 70s jazz funk mode, especially on the drums, which are often handled by Idris Muhammad or Bernard Purdie. And even better, none of these songs have ever been issued before – and even though a few titles might be familiar from other recordings, the versions on this album are completely funky, often more so than the ones you might know! Titles include "There Was There", "Come Away Death", "Rhinocerous Main Theme", "Prison Life", "Love Knows No Season", and a stunning version of "Ripped Open By Metal Explosions".

Galt MacDermotUp From The Basement – Unreleased Tracks Vol 1 & 2 ... CD
Kilmarnock/Stones Throw, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $13.99 14.98
Some of the funkiest work ever recorded by Galt MacDermot – the quirky jazz and soundtrack composer who's become a favorite of beatheads over the years! The set combines two albums worth of unreleased tracks by Galt – killer material from his legendary years, all recorded for his own Kilmarnock label, and never issued at the time. The CD's filled with quirky funk tracks that feature loads of tight drums, skittish basslines, and some killer piano and other jazzy bits – all set up with a sound that's incredibly fresh, and which makes the CD a total delight for fans of anything funky. Both these sets were out on vinyl before, but honestly, hearing the work together in this 24 track package makes it come alive even more – as there's a depth to the set that's simply astounding!

new Galt MacDermotWoman Is Sweeter ... LP
Kilmarnock, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Reissue pressing of this great Galt MacDermot soundtrack, featuring the totally cool sample for Busta Rhymes' big single last year, laid out in the track "Space". Lots of other cool spare funky ones, and a great record all the way through. Tight grooves, spare electric keyboards with a flat "Wu Tang" sound, and lots of choppy funky sounds. A must for sample heads and fans of off-kilter funky grooves alike! At one time, we had this for a very high price, but we managed to score a whole bunch at a new low cost. Another Dusty Groove price breakthrough!!!

Galt MacDermot & William Dumaresq — Take This Bread/A Mass In Our Time ... LP
Kilmarnock, 1973. New Copy Gatefold .... $14.99
A groovy little jazz mass – written by Galt MacDermot in collaboration with lyricist William Dumaresq – and done in a post-Hair style that's got plenty of subtle funky touches underneath the vocals! The work follows in the mode of similar albums from the time by David Axelrod, Howard Roberts, and even MacDermot – with a mass-like structure, but lyrics that are clearly contemporary – and music that's got plenty of nice bass at the bottom, and some nice Hair-like rhythms rolling through the mix. Vocalists include Salome Bey, Nel Carter, and the Howard Roberts Chorus – and from what we can tell, Bernard Purdie's helping out on drums!
(Cool original pressing! Comes with a golden gatefold cover too!)

new Galt MacDermot's First Natural Hair Band — Ripped Open By Metal Explosions (edit)/Let The Sunshine In (previously unreleased) ... 7-inch
Kilmarnock, Late 60s. New Copy (pic cover).... $6.99
A funky treasure! The single features alternate versions of two funky funky tunes by the great Galt MacDermot – recorded in the late 60s with Idris Muhammad on drums! Side one features the sublime "Ripped Open By Metal Explosions", one of Galt's most sampled funky tracks – presented here in an edited version which really pumps up the drums! "Let the Sunshine In" is done here in one of the funkiest versions you'll ever hear – drums and bass vamping along with a tight little groove, as horns come in over the top and give the track a weird little edge!

Galt MacDermot/Jim Rado/Jerry Ragni — Disinhairited ... LP
RCA, Late 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $0.99
A pretty great follow-up to the original Hair soundtrack – featuring tracks that were outtakes from the musical, presented here with notes, a cool gatefold package, and backings conducted by Galt MacDermot himself! The tracks are all pretty great – lots of them short and really messed up, a lot more down and dirty than the tracks that did make the musical, with subject matter that's a lot raunchier too. Not really that funky, but with plenty of nice moments – and vocalists that include Melba Moore and George Tipton. Titles include "Hello There", "I'm Hung", "Climax", "Washing The World", "Manhattan Beggar", "Exanaplanatooch", "One Thousand Year Old Man", "Dead End", "Mess O'Dirt", and "The Bed".

new Galt MacDermot with Fergus MacRoy — Woman Is Sweeter/Black Street Fair ... 7-inch
Kilmarnock, Early 70s. New Copy .... $0.99 Out Of Stock
One of Galt MacDermot's lesser moments – but still pretty interesting! Fergus MacRoy has a voice that's a lot like Bob Dorough, which suits both of these tracks pretty well, since they're strangely arranged numbers from the mad mind of Galt! "Black Street Fair" has a nice bassline on the intro, too!

new Galt MacDermot & Others — Highway Life – Songs From Dude ... LP
Kilmarnock, 1973. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A mixed batch of vocal and instrumental tracks from the Galt MacDermot musical Dude – a lesser-known follow-up to Hair, also written with Jerome Ragni! Dude wasn't as funky as Hair, but there's some very nice moments, and some good soulful tracks that make the album well worth having. Salome Bey sings on some tracks (and these are different from her recordings on her own Dude LP), as does Nell Carter, Nat Morris, and Jim Farrell – all in a gently soulful mode that has some nice folksy touches. Instrumentation is by a group that includes Galt on piano – plus Bernard Purdie on drums, Seldon Powell on saxes, Ernie Hayes on organ, and Wilbur Bascomb on bass. There's a few nice sample-type introductions to a few of the tracks, and a few that are instrumental all the way through. Titles include "Suzie Moon", "Humdrum Life", "Days Of This Life", "Un Do", "Dude All Dude", "Wa Wa Wa", and "The Highway Life".
(Original pressing! Vinyl is very slightly warped, but played fine for us.)

new Billy Butler — 400 Girls Ago/Up ... 7-inch
Kilmarnock, 1974. New Copy .... $6.99
Tripped-out spacey guitar by Billy Butler – two tracks lifted from his Via Galactica album, and produced by Galt MacDermot, who handled the whole project with a slightly stoner edge! "400 Girls" has this nice slow-stepping groove – really hanging in space and moving slowly in a really great way – as Billy slowly plucks out a sweet melody that builds as the tune rolls on! "Up" is a bit more uptempo, but kind of a weird wah wah bluesy number too – with these chords by Butler that are unlike most of his other records at the time!

new Billy Butler — Plays Via Galactica ... LP
Kilmarnock, 1973. New Copy .... $14.99
Wow! Funky guitarist Billy Butler runs through Galt MacDermot's score for Via Galactica, with music conducted by the funky composer himself. The sound is spacey and electronic, with drums by Bernard Purdie, bass by Wilbur Bascomb, and piano by Galt himself. Tracks include "Hush", "Life Wins", "400 Girls Ago", and "Other Side of the Sky". Not really a breakbeat record, but with a bunch of cool spacey moments and some very nice spacey laidback sounds. We used to sell this for a lot more, but we found a bunch at a low price, so take advantage of our good luck and get this lost record at a nice new price!
(Original pressing! PLEASE NOTE – some of these copies have a very light warp to them, but they play fine.)

new Dennis Coffey — Hair & Thangs ... LP
Maverick, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A stunner! You'll probably never find this rare first Dennis Coffey album in the original, so you owe it to yourself to snatch up this funky funky reissue of stripped down guitar breakbeat jams! The record has Coffey playing his trademark fuzzy guitar, along with his early group that included the legendary Lyman Woodard on organ and Andrew Davis on drums. As the title implies, some tracks are versions of cuts from Hair – with great Galt MacDermot grooves like "Let The Sunshine In", "Sodomy", and "Aquarius" – plus other excellent covers and originals, like "Hair & Grits", "Hey Jude", "Do Your Thang", "Iceberg's Thang", "It's Your Thang", and "Electric Thang". Clearly, it's a very thang-heavy LP, with all the funkiness that might imply! There's some excellent drum breaks, and more than a boatload full of fuzzy guitar riffs to groove groove groove you away!

Peter Nero — From Hair To Hollywood ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good .... $8.99
A totally excellent album! Sure, Peter Nero could be one of the sleepier piano players of the 60s – but on this little gem, he's playing moog, and it sounds great! Nero's taking moog to the sweet soundtrack groovers "Midnight Cowboy" and The Windmills Of Your Mind" – which both come out in a dark spooky style, and "Windmills" sounds especially great, as it begins with a moogy breakbeat that would make Perry-Kingsley weep! Moog's also heard on "Be In" and "Let the Sunshine In" from Hair – and the album also includes 4 other numbers from Galt MacDermot's funky musical, like "Aquarius", "Hair", and "Good Morning Starshine". Frank Hunter did the arrangments – and there's a lot of nice funk running through the LP!
(360 Sound stereo pressing. Cover has some wear, a tracklist sticker on the front along the bottom, a spot of tape on the spine, and a small sticker on the back. Label has a small sticker.)

Bernard Purdie (Pretty Purdie) — Soul Drums (expanded edition with bonus material) ... CD
Date/Greenstreets, 1967. New Copy .... $13.99 17.98
Massive work from one of the funkiest drummers of all time – the legendary Bernard Pretty Purdie, stepping out here in a batch of instrumentals that may well be his greatest album ever! Bernard's drums are right up front in the mix – leading off all tunes with a full, funky, echoey sort of approach that's unlike anything else we can think of – and certainly different from any other late 60s albums of this type! The production is totally great – and has a way of pulling out some of the weirdest aspects of the music – which itself features guitar from Billy Butler and Eric Gale, bass from Bob Bushnell, tenor and flute from Seldon Powell, and organ and piano from Richard Tee – who also handled all the arrangements on the set! The centerpiece is the hit single "Funky Donkey", but just about every track's a groover in its own way – and titles include "Soul Drums", "Bill's Groove", "Jimmy's Back", "Testifyin", "Modern Jive", "Blow Your Lid", "Bee N Tee", and "Soul Bossa Nova". This new edition includes 8 bonus tracks, with a couple rare 45 tracks and more that have never been released – all soulful & funk – well paired with the Soul Drums album! Bonus tracks are in stereo, and include "Alexander's Rag Time Band", "Genuine John", "Soul Clappin", "If You Never Cried", "Stop" and "Time Is Tight". Also comes with a nice booklet with new liner notes, and choice quotes from Purdie's peers and those he influenced, from Galt MacDermot to Large Professor.

Tartaglia — Tartaglian Theorum ... LP
Capitol, 1968. Very Good+ .... $14.99
Sweet and dreamy instrumental pop from John Andrews Tartaglia – an arranger we only know from a few late 60s sides at Capitol Records – all of which are pretty great! Tartaglia's got a style that's still heavy in mainstream 60s easy modes, but borrows a fair bit from the generation of Galt MacDermot and Jimmy Webb – an approach that's initially straightforward, but which has some very nice dark corners – a bit in the mode of Nick DeCaro's work from the same period! A few tracks here feature a bit of moog, but even when there's no electronics, the instrumentation seems to hint at them – thanks to some very inventive orchestrations. Titles include "Poto Flavus", "America", "Like To Get To Know You/Give A Damn", "Wichita Lineman" and "I Am The Walrus". The album also has a version of "Abraham, Martin, & John" which pairs the voices of The Blossoms with a Moog!
(Cover has a cutout hole & some light wear. Spine has a spot of old tape & a small rip. Back cover has WGN library letters.)

Barney Kessel — Hair Is Beautiful ... CD
1969. New Copy .... Around June 26, 2013
One of the many many groovy jazz versions of the famous Hair score by Galt MacDermot! This one has Barney Kessel getting a lot hipper than usual – with backing by organ and electric bass, which makes for a nice groovy groove. The whole thing's nice and spare, with a groovy feeling, and good stripped down renderings of slightly funky tracks like "Frank Mills", "Walking in Space", "Be-In", "Good Morning Sunshine", and "Easy to be Hard".
