Black Uhuru — Black Sounds Of Freedom ... LP
Greensleeves, 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $10.99
The debut album from the second lineup of Black Uhuru, with Duckie Simpson, Michael Rose and Errol Nelson. Produced by Prince Jammy, this is a tremendous slice of rootsy rockers, even if it doesn't quite top the later version of the group with Puma Jones and Sly & Robbie's production. This later Greensleeves edition was remixed by Jammy at Tubby's in 1981, and includes "Time To Unite", "Love Crisis", "Willow Tree", "African Love", "Eden Out Deh", "I Love King Selassie", "Hard Ground" and a great version of Marley's "Natural Mystic".

new Devo — Freedom Of Choice ... LP
Warner, 1980. Very Good+ .... $7.99
The era that catapulted cult heroes Devo into pop culture history – with bubblier synths, catchier hooks, and crazier multimedia shenanigans than ever before from these pioneers of the video era – and time capsule pop angle aside, one of the best and most innovate pop albums of its time! It's pretty hard to imagine the early 80s without Devo, but the group and this record is just as amazing decades later, since there was never anyone else like them! Includes "Girl U Want", "It's Not Right", "Whip It", "Freedom Of Coice", "Cold War", "Don't You Know", "Gates Of Steel" and more.
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

Ethiopians — Freedom Train ... CD
Kingston Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $13.99
One of the greatest harmony groups to ever come from Jamaica – a killer quartet who fused together American soul styles with sweet reggae rhythms – all to create a groove that really helped push forward the sounds of Kingston! This collection of classic work by The Ethiopians is completely sublime throughout – numbers that step along slowly, with a great head-nodding groove – and vocals that echo out wonderfully with a collaborative, spontaneous quality you don't always get in reggae work of this vintage. Instrumentation is by a lineup of greats recorded at Treasure Isle and Wirl – including Tommy McCook on tenor, Winston Wright on Hammond, and Sly & Robbie on rhythms. Titles include "Train To Skaville (Original Version)", "Guilty Conscience", "Hurry On", "Reggae Hit The Town", "The Selah", "Ethiopean National Anthem", "Need Someone", "Slave Call", "Everything Crash", "Love Jah", and "Obeah Book". CD features a few bonus tracks not on the LP.

Freedom Unity — Something (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Liberty/Think (Japan), 1970. New Copy .... $34.99
A great bit of fusion from the start of the 70s – kind of a bridge between the late 60s "groovy" Japanese jazz, and some of the freer-thinking work to come! The group features excellent tenor from Takeru Muraoka, who plays with kind of a sharp edge that almost echoes more of the alto and soprano work of the generation – mixed with keyboards from Hiromasa Suzuki – who's plenty great on electric piano! Hiroshi Suzuki plays trombone, and the set's got some nice funky drums from Akira Ishikawa – who's always a treat. Overall, the set often has some of the same funky characteristics as some of the best late 60s electric jazz sets on Liberty Records in the US – on titles that include "Capricorn", "Something", "On A Sunny Day", "Some Other Night", and "Peaceful Planet".

Keith Hudson — Torch Of Freedom ... CD
Atra/Hot Milk (UK), 1975. New Copy .... $13.99
An amazing debut from Keith Hudson – a record with undeniably soulful power all the way through – a strong testament to the lasting talents of this memorable singer from the 70s! The production's mighty nice too – often dubby at points, yet in really unconventional ways – with keyboards that tipple behind Hudson on the vocal tracks, then space out more on the instrumental ones – but often a bit more synthy than some of his contemporaries, in ways that really stand out strongly – especially after repeated listenings. The whole thing's a treasure – a record that grabs you right away, then holds on for years – and titles include "Lost All Sense Of Direction", "Jah Jah", "Don't Look At Me So", "Look At Me", "Don't Let The Teardrops Fool You", "Teardrops", "Like I'm Dying", "Turn The Heater On", "So Cold Without You", "Five More Minutes Of Your Time", "My Time", "Torch Of Freedom", and "Freedom Movements".

new Jazz Crusaders — Freedom Sound ... CD
Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1961. New Copy .... $15.99
Sublime early soul jazz from the Jazz Crusaders – a seminal set that really has the group taking off right away! The use of "freedom" in the title is well placed – as the set definitely shows the players stretching out a bit on their solos – hinting at the magic that would move even more forward during their Lighthouse recordings – while still hanging onto the great groove that took them from Texas to the top of the LA scene! Every player's got a key presence here – Wilton Felder on tenor, Wayne Henderson on trombone, Joe Sample on piano, and Stix Hooper on drums – and the set also features some guest rhythm work from Jimmy Bond on bass and Roy Gaines on guitar, both of whom bring a nice pulse to the set. Titles include "The Geek", "Freedom Sound", and "Coon".

Joe McPhee, Lisle Ellis & Paul Plimley — Sweet Freedom – Now What? ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1994. New Copy .... $9.99 19.99
A partial tribute to the music of Max Roach – particularly that crucial moment of righteous Civil Rights energy during his Freedom Now period – handled here with great sensitivity by the trio of Joe McPhee on tenor, soprano sax, and clarinet, Lisle Ellis on bass, and Paul Plimley on drums! Some of the tunes are Roach numbers from the late 50s and early 60s – those haunting, soul-searching tunes that formed the blueprint for progressive jazz expression for years to come – and other numbers are originals by members of the group, but in a very similar spirit. All work is handled in a spacious, contemplative mode that's much more the voice of the trio members than that of Roach – which is quite fitting, as these meditations on freedom are offered more as a reflection of changes since the Civil Rights era – and demonstrate that greatly with their execution. Titles include "Mendacity", "Driva Man", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "Singing With A Sword In My Hand", "Garvey's Ghost", and "Roost".

MFSB — Philadelphia Freedom/Summertime ... CD
Philadelphia International/Edsel (UK), 1975/1976. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99
A great 2-fer set – one that brings together albums that feature MSFB at the height of their mid 70s powers! Philadelphia Freedom is a very big crossover moment for the Philly sound, and one of the biggest hits by the studio combo that drove the big Gamble/Huff hits of the 70s! The record's a great batch of smooth Philly instrumentals – not really disco, although the tracks certainly crossed over there – more uptempo soul, with the same bouncy sound heard on the vocal hits of the label – a majestic Philly International groove, carefully classy, but still damn soulful too! Includes lots of familiar cuts – like "Zach's Fanfare", "Get Down With The Philly Sound", "Brothers & Sisters", and "South Philly". Summertime is quite possibly our favorite album from MFSB – the legendary Philly instrumental group from the 70s! The record's completely sublime all the way through – and is perhaps the most perfect illustration of that subtle blend of funk, soul, and disco that makes the group so great – a sound that was copied by others like Salsoul Orchestra or Instant Funk, but almost never done as perfectly as on this sweet little set! The album's got some chorus vocals on a few cuts, but mostly hangs out in an instrumental mix of Philly rhythms, jazzy solo moments, and some soaring strings that really help fill up the groove. There's a definite summer theme going on – and titles include the great McFadden & Whitehead "Summertime And I'm Feelin Mellow", plus "We Got The Time", "Hot Summer Nights", "Picnic In the Park", and "Sunnin & Funnin".

Louis Moholo's Viva La Black — Freedom Tour – Live In South Africa 1993 ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1993. New Copy .... $14.99
An incredibly spiritual session from percussionist Louis Moholo and his ensemble Viva La Black – recorded on the occasion of a series of concerts in Moholo's homeland of South Africa – and done in a way that's as much a document of the group's trip as it is a recording of the music in the concerts. Many of the tracks are shorter passages that flow together with longer ones – piecing together the warm spirit and soulful expression allowed to the group during the tour. And the music itself shares in a heritage that runs back through the 60s work of Mingus and Roland Kirk, the 70s experiments of the AACM, and the rich jazz-in-exile work of Moholo himself! Instrumentation includes percussion, trumpet, saxes, piano, and bass – plus vocals from all the members of the group – and titles include "Use Less Sugar & Stir Like Hell", "Volunteered Slavery", "Woza", "Nikosi", "End Of Man", "Dudu P", "I'll Look All Over Afrika For You", "Drum Choir", and "Joyful Noise".

Monophonics/Destruments — Like Yesterday/Freedom ... 7-inch
Colemine, 2011. New Copy .... $4.99
Heavy funk from our friends at Colemine – great stuff from Cali combo Monophonics plus a different, but just as great psych funk styled cut by Destruments! "Like Yesterday" is solid as can be, a hard-hitting number with walloping drums, punchy horns, and powerhouse vocals – a track that starts out like it's going to slow cookin' jam highlighted by bluesy soul guitar, but it heats up quickly! "Freedom" by Destruments is an atmospheric gem that's not too easy to describe – which is a good thing! The beat and rhythm are stable, with densely atmospheric horns and spacey flourishes. A cool split single that demonstrates the far-reaching creative capabilities of the contemporary funk scene!

Shuggie Otis — Freedom Flight (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Epic, 1971. New Copy (reissue).... $12.99
The second album from Shuggie Otis – a wild and wooly batch of grooves that really stretches out the sound from the first! Shuggie's got much more of a hand in the arrangements here – and the tunes are grooving in a sweet blend of funk, rock, and soul – really drenched in the best cross-cultural influences going down on the west coast scene of the time – a kind of color-blind quest for the groove that comes across with a really righteous power! Tracks include the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus the cuts "Ice Cold Daydream", "Freedom Flight", "Sweet Thang", "Purple", and "Me & My Woman".

Sonny Rollins — Freedom Suite (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Riverside (Japan), 1958. Used .... $7.99
A crucially important record in Sonny Rollins' career – one that had him breaking out of the straight bop sound, and emerging as a major power on the tenor sax – one with limitless creative power! The set features Rollins working with only drum and bass accompaniment – played by Max Roach and Oscar Pettiford, respectively – and the lack of piano or other horns gives Rollins a free space in which to work his magic, doing so incredibly on the album's "Freedom Suite", an extended piece that runs for nearly 20 minutes, and which pushes all conceptions of the tenor's ability to solo freely on record. The other side of the record features shorter tracks – "Shadow Waltz", "Someday I'll Find You", and "Will You Still Be Mine?" – blown with no less creativity.

Sammy with Freedom Unity — Salute To Soul ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $29.99
Sammy sings soul – not Sammy Davis Jr, but this ultra-hip Japanese singer from the early 70s – a female vocalist who works here with great backings from the Freedom Unity ensemble! The tunes are all numbers from American and British sources of the 50s and 60s – tunes you'd know from versions on labels like Stax or Atlantic, but redone here with some really groovy new inflections – including cool arrangements from Freedom Unity, with a nice blend of strings and soulful jazz elements – including some especially great keyboards and reeds on some numbers! Sammy sings in English, but with this unusual accent that really transforms the tunes – and titles include versions of "Hey Jude", "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Summertime", "What Am I Living For", "House Of The Rising Sun", and "Nobody's Fault But Mine".

Wadada Leo Smith — Ten Freedom Summers (4CD set) ... CD
Cuneiform, 2012. New Copy 4CD .... $26.99 29.98
One of the most important records from Wadada Leo Smith in years – an extended set of compositions that offer reflections on and reactions to the Civil Rights era in America! The work here stretches back to the 70s – as some of the tracks were penned by Smith many years ago, but have been brought together, and woven in with more recent music to form a rich tapestry in sound – one that's performed partly by Smith's Golden Quartet/Quintet – and partly by the Southwest Chamber Music ensemble! The sound is stunning – some of the richest, most expressive material we've ever heard from Leo – and the core group features Smith on trumpet, Anthony Davis on piano, John Lindberg on bass, and both Pheeroan Aklaff and Susie Ibarra on drums – while the Southwest group brings in added chamber instrumentation on strings and clarinet. Aklaff plays a few striking solo percussion numbers – and titles include "The Freedom Riders Ride", "The Little Rock Nine", "John F Kennedy's New Frontier & The Space Age", "Black Church", "Rosa Parks & The Montgomery Bus Boycott", "Democracy", and "Medgar Evers A Love Voice Of A Thousand Years' Journey".

Donald Alexander Strachan & The Freedom Ensemble — Soul Translation – A Spiritual Suite ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1975. New Copy .... $19.99
A beautiful little record – and one that definitely earns the "suite" distinction in the title – given the thoughtful longform approach of the set! The album's got a more composed feel than other spiritual jazz sessions of the time – not in a stiff way, but in a style that shows that leader Donald Alexander Strachan really has a strong vision in his music – not just in the compositions he spins forth on the record, but also in the way he directs the rich energy of the ensemble! The lineup features Strachan on guitar and piano – but also features Jay Hoggard on vibes, Carl Viggianni on flute, Lee Rozie on tenor, John Thompson on cornet, M Malik Jackson on piano, and Ray Newton and Archie Delerme on percussion. Tracks have this rhythmic pulse and subtle soul that's not unlike some of the more ambitious Horace Silver projects of the time – such as his "with percussion" or "with brass" records – but the feel here is also a bit looser and more intimate too – with a vibe that's very much in the Strata East mode. Titles include "Song Of Searching", "Spiritual Travelers", "Masters Of The Bourchakoun", "Silent Jubilation", "Tenth Door", "Aquarian Voices", and "Soul Release".

Various — Freedom Is A Hammer – Conservative Folk Revolutionaries Of The 60s ... CD
Omni (Australia), 1960s. New Copy .... $16.99 19.99
A deep dip into forgotten, politically-motivated Americana from the impressive diggers at Omni – and a surprisingly strong collection of material from singers who served as the American right's response to the largely left-of-center folk singers of the mid-to-late 60s – and we're not gonna lie to you, reactionary conservatism never sounded so groovy! It's pretty amazing stuff – not only serving as an answer to the left's protest song ideals, but it's full of well-crafted, well-produced, creatively worthy songcraft. It features multiple tracks by 3 artist – pulling together rare songs from 45 EPs by Janet Greene, album and 45 tracks by Vera Vanderlaan, and the rare Cry, The Beloved Country album by Tony Dolan. Given just how far social, political and musical culture has progressed in the decades since, it's easy to listen to these songs, and their warnings of insidious Commie threats and other supposed left wing terrors waiting to happen, as a bit of a novelty item – but on the other hand, there's plenty of contemporary parallels to consider. While some of the songs border on self-parody, others are actually reasonable and pretty fair-minded – and nearly all of it is irresistibly listenable! Includes "Fascist Threat", "Commie Lies", "Poor Left Winger", "Run" and more by Janet Greene; "Abolish, Abolish!", "Cuba Will Be Free", "Cry, The Beloved Country", "Remember Bloody Budapest", "Harry Pollitt", "New York Times Blues" and more by Tony Dolan; "Freedom Is A Hammer", "Hello World", "Stand Up And Be Counted", "Red Fire" and more by Vera Vanderlaan. 29 tracks in all – and it includes a detailed booklet with bios and artist facts, as well as some fascinating right-of-center newsletter stills, shots of rally posters, etc. from the period.

new Various — Freedom Jazz Dance – Book 2 ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2005. New Copy .... $13.99
An amazing little set – far greater even than the already-excellent first volume, and a treasure trove of modern dancefloor jazz that includes a fair bit of previously unissued numbers! The vibe here is very firmly in the Schema records old/new blend of jazz and grooves – but it's also expanded nicely to include work from key combos on the current global club jazz underground – that spreading scene that's finally getting around to playing real jazz with real soul, instead of just noodling around with samples of saxophones! The feel throughout is tremendous – a near-classic blend of acoustic instrumental approaches to jazz, with just the right electric augmentation to kick things up a notch or two without dampening the soul. Titles include "Lead The Way" by Soulstance, "1974" by Jukka Eskola, "My Love Samba" by Luis Ferri, "Solifer Lento" by Dalindeo, "Some Kind Of Blues (jazz mood inst)" by S-Tone Inc, "Heroes of The Conquest" by The Invisible Session, "Stars" by Paolo Fedreghini & Marco Bianchi, "Mr Bond" by Quartetto Moderno, and "Yes & No" by Quintetto Lo Greco. 11 tracks in all.

The sound of jazz in the 21st Century – a bold new wave of acosutic expression and soulful improvisation – served up here in an amazing assortment that features a few previously unreleased tunes! new Orrin Evans — Freedom ... CD
Posi tone, 2011. New Copy .... $11.99 16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those records that's really won us over to the piano talents of Orrin Evans – a player who's got a way of being bold, yet without ever sounding overdone – a really careful balance that really makes his music full of soul, and compelling right from the start! At some level, Orrin's got the sharp attack you'd hear from Robert Glasper or Vijay Iyer – yet he's also got more of a swing overall, and is always right on the money with his groove – thanks in strong part here to bassist Dwayne Burno, whose deep lines really carve out the sound of the set! The pair are perfect throughout – and get help on drums from either Anwar Marshall or Byron Landham – and are joined by some great tenor from Larry McKenna on two tracks. Titles include "One For Honor", "Shades Of Green", "Gray's Ferry", "Oasis", "Hodge Podge", "Just Enough", and "Dita".

new FreedomFarther Than Imagination (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Malaco/Clinck (Japan), 1978. New Copy .... $22.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing, unjustly obscure bit of southern funky soul – played with kind of a club oriented groove, and a strong nod towards middle-period Earth, Wind, & Fire – a far different vibe than a lot of the southern soul on the Malaco label! The band has some nice harmony vocals over a jazzy bass-heavy style – and the record mixes uptempo funky tracks with smoother mellower ones. Includes the dancefloor cuts "Dance Sing Along" and "Get Up And Dance" – plus great mellow numbers like "Summer Memory" and "Wake Up Your Mind". Other titles include "Farther Than Imagination", "Know You Better" and "You've Just Got To Be The One". This CD version is loaded with bonus tracks – including the extended 12" mixes of "Dance Sing Along" and "Get Up And Dance" – plus rare singles "The Funktionary", "Come On And Dance", "At The Party", "Whodat" and "All For You".

Arista Freedom, 1973. Used .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great early album by this oft-overlooked spiritual avant group that included Lester Bowie, Oliver Lake, JD Parran, and Charles Bobo Shaw. Side one features the extended "Lover's Desire", a nice slightly-funky number that has a groove that's sort of modal. Side two of the album features "Hazrat The Sufi", a long creative avant piece, with insane ensemble playing that's very much in the AACM mode.

new Rascals — Freedom Suite ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A double-length set from The Rascals – possibly their most stretched-out exploration of ideas, at least during their initial run for Atlantic Records! The 2LP set features a fair bit of shorter, catchier tunes on the first record – many with some righteous soul overtones – but on the second record, the group really open up – hitting some longer jamming tunes on side three, and moving into a 15 minute instrumental on side four! Vocals are great from all three singers – Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati, and Felix Cavaliere – and the rhythms are rock-solid too, often augmented with a bit of Atlantic-styled backings by Arif Mardin, to further enforce the soulfulness of the set. Titles include the hit "People Got To Be Free", plus "American The Beautiful", "Any Dance'll Do", "A Ray Of Hope", "Look Around", "Boom", "Heaven", "Cute", "Baby I'm Blue", and "Adrian's Birthday".

new Nina Simone — Forever Young, Gifted, & Black – Songs Of Freedom & Spirit ... CD
RCA, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $5.99 6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The hippest work of Nina Simone's years on RCA – a collection that brings together tracks that really fit the spirit of the title! Although Simone had always explored righteous themes throughout her career, she really opened up during her late 60s/early 70s run for RCA – using new freedoms at the label to stretch out the length of her tunes, deepen the social currents of her themes, and even move her musical backings away from straight jazz-based lines. Package features liner notes by Alicia Keys, a specially commissioned poem by Nikki Giovanni, and previously unreleased alternate versions of "Turn Turn Turn" and "Ain't Got No" – plus the tracks "Westwind (live)", "Backlash Blues (live)", "Why (The King Of Love Is Dead)(live)", "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", "Revolution (parts 1 & 2)", and "Mississippi Goddam (live)".

new Anthony Braxton/Duke Ellington — Concept Of Freedom ... CD
Hatology (Switzerland), 2003. New Copy .... $9.99 19.99 Out Of Stock
Braxton and Ellington appear here as composers of the work, not as performers – but the spirit of both is alive and well in this performance, breaking out in complicated waves of sound that recall the earliest moments of the former, but which are also informed by the concepts of freedoms put forth by the latter! The performance features passages from Braxton's "Composition No 257" and Ellington's "Freedoms No 1, 4, & 6 From The Sacred Concert No 2" – performed by a sonically-conscious quartet that includes Roland Dahinden on trombone, Hildegard Kleeb on piano, Dimitris Polisoidis on violin, and Robert Holdrich on electronics – used here in a heavy, textural way that reminds us a bit of Braxton's own recordings in the format during the 70s! There's moments when the deeper electronic tones bubble forth with the trombone that are simply wonderful – creating soundshapes and tones that are worth the price of the record alone, slightly augmented by bits of piano and violin.

Oxford University Press, 2010. New Copy Book .... $7.99 27.95 Out Of Stock
A range of essays on the music, influence, and cultural significance of the late John Coltrane – easily one of the key forces to have shaped our taste here at Dusty Groove! The book offers a number of differing perspectives, some with an academic tone, some a bit more political – and overall, the writings definitely live up to the spirit promised in the title! Articles include "A Look At Late John Coltrane" by Salim Washington, "When Bar Walkers Preach" by Tommy Lott, "Freedom Is A Constant Struggle" by Tammy Kernodle, "John Coltrane As The Personification Of Spirituality In Black Music" by Anthony Brown, "In His Own Words – Coltrane's Responses To Critics" by Leonard L Brown, "John Coltrane & The Practice Of Freedom" by Herman Gray, and a few interviews with Billy Taylor, Yusef Lateef, and Olly Wilson – and a special coda, "George Russell on John Coltrane". 235 pages, paperback.

new Ethiopians — Freedom Train ... LP
Kingston Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock

Strata East/Think (Japan), 1975. New Copy Gatefold .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever on the legendary Strata East label – and that's saying a hell of a lot! Drummer Billy Parker is a player that we don't know much, but he'll always be well-remembered for this album's sublime blend of spiritual jazz styles! The lineup is wonderful – a hip quintet with Ron Bridgewater on tenor and Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet – plus sister Dee Dee on additional vocals at a few points too! Donald Smith also plays piano, and sings a bit – with his warmly soulful style that makes the album's leadoff track a killer classic – and the rest of the group is rounded out by Cecil McBee on bass and Parker on drums. Tracks have those perfect blends of searching, soaring elements that virtually define the Strata East vision in the 70s – and titles include the sublime "Dance of The Little Children", plus "Gemini's Lullaby", "Home", "Get With It", and "Freedom Of Speech".

Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/1970s/1980s. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
One of the hippest, deepest collections of European jazz we've ever heard – a really wonderful set that opens up a whole new side of the French scene of the 60s, 70s, and 80s – filled with music that we've never heard before! Unlike other sets of this nature, which focus on American players overseas – this one is filled with homegrown talent, often working in styles that echo the spiritual and modal sounds of the US underground of the post-Coltrane years – very rich in feeling and righteous in message – freely expressive, but never going too far out to lose their groove! We know some artists here, but not from these recordings – and others are pulled from the kind of totally obscure French albums you'd only find after years of digging around in Paris flea markets. Titles include "Colchiques" by Eddy Louiss, "Doorstep" by Octet De Dreux, "Notes So High" by Stella Levitt, "Ricardo" by Michel Roques, "La Musique D'Orphee" by Chene Noir, "Le Musichien" by Francois Tusques, "Creole Girl" by Noah Howard, "Israel Suite" by Rupture, and "Lido" by Les Prospections.

new Freedom Jazz Trio (Francisco Mora Catlett) — New Under The Sun ... CD
AACE, 2010. New Copy .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
A beautiful little group – one who play with a lot more subtlety than you'd guess from the "freedom" in their name! The ensemble's a perfect match of pianist Francesco Tristano, bassist Carlo De Rosa, and drummer Francisco Mora Catlett – a really well-balanced trio that seems to have equal focus on the work of all three instruments, both from a melodic and rhythmic perspective! At times, the percussion of Catlett really seems to open up the tracks – but at others, the sensitive piano lines of Tristano, with almost a Bill Evans sort of care – move things along in this mellow glow that's totally great. Tracks are all long, and develop beautifully with this balance of sonic tenderness and rhythmic pulse – and titles include "Barasuayo", "5xmax", "Dean", "C2izo", "Blue People", and "Earth Tones".

new Gato Barbieri & Dollar Brand — Confluence ... LP
Arista Freedom, 1968. Very Good .... $1.99
A real sleeper – and one of the treasures of the Arista Freedom series! The album's a rare meeting between Argentine tenor player Gato Barbieri and South African pianist Dollar Brand – a true global meeting of the jazz minds, and a recording that's stronger than most of the work either player was recording at the time! The format is incredibly spare – just tenor and piano, plus some occasional cello work by Brand – dark and angular, but also filled with small flowers of hope, flowering in the spontaneous presence of these two great minds. Tracks are long, with a free flowing quality that's infused with soul and spirit – and titles include "Hamba Khale", "Aloe & The Wildrose", and "To Elsa".

Stanley Cowell — Blues For The Viet Cong ... CD
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $24.99
Incredible work from the young Stanley Cowell – one of his first albums ever, but already a step ahead of most of his contemporaries! The set's a trio date, unlike some of Cowell's later albums for Strata East – and it's got a wonderful blend of soaring piano lines and more complicated rhythms – already showing some of the spiritual elements that Cowell would later craft into longer lines with Charles Tolliver – but possibly even more striking here in the looser space of a trio! Rhythms are sometimes quite fluid and free – almost in the vein of some of Steve Kuhn's most inventive late 60s work – but sometimes things echo previous generations as well, almost with a Jaki Byard vibe. In addition to Cowell's great work on acoustic and electric piano, the trio features wonderful drums from Jimmy Hopps and bass from Steve Novosel – both players who are at the top of their game here, and really help set fire to Cowell's music. Titles include an early take on "Travelin Man" – quite different from the later version on Strata East, but equally wonderful – plus "Blues For The Viet Cong", "Wedding March", "Photon In A Paper World", "Departure", "Sweet Song", and "The Shuttle".

Stephane Grappelli — Parisian Thoroughfare ... LP
Freedom, 1973. Very Good+ .... $3.99
One of our favorite later albums by Stephane Grappelli – a really inventive little session that's filled with odd twists and turns! The outward format is somewhat simple – a quartet with Roland Hanna on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums – but the structure of the songs is quite fresh, often with unusual timings and rhythms arranged by Hanna – which are themselves augmented by Grappelli's instrumentation – way more than just traditional jazz violin, and a complicated mixture of plucked and bowed phrasing. Titles include "Parisian Thoroughfare", "Wave", "Too Cute", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Love For Sale", and "Perugia".

Live solo work by Roland Hanna – a set that starts out kind of slow, as Hanna performs 2 Ellington crowd-pleasers – but which then really takes off as he moves into his own beautiful compositions! These really have Hanna unfolding on the keys, and playing with a rich lyrical quality that always marked his best work – and which makes him a compelling player that can really hold sway even in a solo set. Titles include "Wistful Moment", "Perugia", "Time Dust Gathered", and "A Child Is Born" – as well as versions of "Take The A Train" and "I Got It Bad & That Ain't Good".

Julius Hemphill (Mbari) — Dogon AD (with bonus track) (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Freedom/International Phonograph, 1972/1977. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 19.98
A seminal session from the St Louis scene of the early 70s – one that was humming nearly as much as Chicago was with the AACM at the time! As with the larger organization in the Windy City, St Louis had the Black Artists Group – of which Julius Hemphill was a key member, forming fresh new ideas in improvisatory jazz with players who went onto have an undeniable impact on the global scene as well. This album's one of the standout recordings of the Black Artists era at its best – a record produced by Hemphill, but equally balanced between his own alto and flute, the trumpet of Baikida Carroll, cello of Abdul Wadud, and drums of Phillip Wilson – plus a bit of added baritone from Haimet Bluiett. The rhythms are quite open, but there's also a nice sense of structure to the record too – a bridge between spiritual and free jazz that prefaces the impact that both Hemphill and Bluiett would have on the New York loft jazz generation. Titles include "Dogon AD", "Rites", and "The Painter". Great reissue too – in a gatefold LP-styled cover, with bonus insert notes, including the artwork from the original 1972 pressing on Hemphill's Mbari label! CD also features a bonus track – "Hard Blues" from Hemphill's Coon Business album!

The band is very nicely matched, and changed moods and modes together as one unit. Tracks include "Inside Job", "Mysterioso", and "Sacred Song".

Tolliver plays here with the original incarnation of his Music Inc group – which includes Stanley Cowell, Steve Novosel, and Jimmy Hopps. The tracks are all originals, with a brilliant spiritual groove that virtually describes the direction Tolliver and similar post-Coltrane musicians would take in the 70's. Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $24.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groundbreaking sounds from the Norwegian scene of the late 60s – an album that's got George Russell's name on the cover, but which actually features brilliant performances from a quartet who'd go onto become huge names in the ECM scene of the 70s! Yet the sound here is quite different than ECM, too – very full and free – with vibrant work that really illuminates the younger years of these musicians – a sublime quartet that includes Jan Garbarek on tenor and soprano sax, Terje Rypdal on guitar, Arild Anderson on bass, and Jon Cristensen on drums! Some tunes are quite free, while others have a spiritual sense of soul that's equally grat – and throughout the record, all players express themselves in an unfettered way – with visionary performances on tracks that include "Nefertiti", "Traneflight", "Esoteric Circle", "SAS 644", "Karin's Mode", and "Breeze Ending".

Arista Freedom release of 2 different sessions by Julius Hemphill – one from 1975, with Arthur Blythe, Hamiet Bluiett, and Abdul Wadud; the other from 1972, with Bluiett, Wadud, and Baikida Carroll. The 1972 session's a bit more interesting, and was recorded in St. Louis by Oliver Sain (of all people!). It's one long track entitled "The Hard Blues", and has an excellent mix of styles, emotions, and voices – with all the players getting in some beautiful solo moments. The 1975 session's not too bad either, but it's just a little too self-consciously out, and lacks the warmth of the other piece.

Pheeroan Ak Laff — House of Spirit – Mirth (limited hardbox version) ... CD
Passin' Thru/Soul Jazz (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $14.99
Very righteous work from percussionist Pheeroan Ak Laff – even more hard-edged than some of his other important recordings of the late 70s – and that's saying a lot! Allthough Pheeroan lent his talents to many other musicians, this is one of the few albums he cut under his own name – and it's a blazing hot batch of percussion – monstrous work on the drum kit, with other percussion instruments as well – all recorded with a spare, earthy sound that's really amazing! The feel is partly loft jazz, partly ethnographic percussion – the latter of which is augmented more when the album features a few spoken spiritual passages – and the tones that Ak Laff gets out of his percussion are amazing – surprisingly melodic moments, mixed with others of bombastic intensity. Titles include "Ayin Of Love", "Tzaddi Vau", "Michelle Del America De Sud", "Jarawa", "Freedom" and "3 In 1".

Arling & Cameron — We Are A&C ... LP
Emperor Norton, 2001. Near Mint- 2LP .... $5.99
We love this one – a lot more than we expected from the stupid cover! The record is a great blend of retro and easy tunes – some with a bit of a beat to them – but a lot more that are in a mode that's completely Bacharach, completely baroque, with bits of soul, soundtrack, and bossa running through the mix. These guys actually do the job right – and take the easy tunes at an easy pace, the breezy ones at a breezy pace, and don't try to muddle things up with too much remixology. They're also great writers and darn good producers – and the record sparkles on many tracks like some lost A&M classic! Titles include "Coconut Conga", "Freedom Right Now", "We Are A&C", "Up", "BB Electro", "5th Dimension", and "Ocean Drive".

David Axelrod — Auction ... LP
Decca, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99
One of David Axelrod's oddest records, but still a darn great one! The whole album is sort of a concept album about slavery (hence the title "The Auction"), and it has some spiritual political vocals on a number of tracks – but underneath is the usual great funky instrumentation of David Axelrod, with lots of nice deep grooves that kick the otherwise snoozy lyrics into another level. The whole thing's got a feel that's sort of like the 24 Carat Black record, with a deep soulful groove. Titles include "The Auction", "Oh! Freedom", "The Debt", "Freedom", "Sympathy", "Leading Citizen", and "Be Proud, My Race!".

Burt Bacharach — Burt Bacharach (1971) (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
A&M (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold .... $39.99
Insanely wonderful work by Bacharach – in a way that we can hardly begin to describe (but we'll certainly try!) By the time this one was recorded – 1971 – Burt's reputation as a songwriter and arranger were so firmly established that he had an incredible amount of freedom in the studio. Here, working with tunes that were mostly well-worn, plus a new one or two – Burt comes up with an amazingly complex set of arrangements, opening up his tunes like little flowers, focusing on a particular instrumental tendril, and drawing it out into incredible lines of melody and color. Proof of this is the album's extended version of "Wives & Lovers", or its suite for orchestra, entitled "And The People Were With Her". All tracks are great – from Burt's intimate vocal on "Hasbrook Heights", to the jangly instrumentation of "Freefall", to the completely recast versions of hits like "One Less Bell To Answer", "April Fools", and "Mexican Divorce". CD features a bonus track – a rare mono version of "All Kinds Of People".

new Gato Barbieri — In Search Of The Mystery ... CD
ESP, 1967. New Copy .... $6.99 13.99
One of the first albums ever cut as a leader by reedman Gato Barbieri – and a very sharp-edged session that's quite different than his better-known work in the 70s! Barbieri's tenor here has an incredible tone – as deeply soulful as Pharoah Sanders or late John Coltrane, and blown with a great sense of freedom – really stretching out on the album's long tracks. Gato never lets himself get too unfocused, though – and the album's an illustration of a side of his talents that was perhaps only shown this well on his recordings with Don Cherry. Players include Calo Scott on cello, Sirone on bass, and Bobby Kapp on drums – and the album's got a vibe that easily matches other ESP sets from the time by Charles Tyler or Sonny Simmons. Titles include "In Search Of The Mystery", "Obsession No 2", "Michelle", and "Cinematheque".

Very righteous work from Fontella Bass – an album done after her time at Chess Records, and after her work in Paris with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – in a heartfelt, southern soul mode that's totally great! Fontella's back working with producer Oliver Sain, who first brought her fame back in the 60s – but the sound is a bit more sophisticated than before, drenched with roots from gospel and country soul, but also inflected with some of the more righteous modes of the early 70s too. Fontella's vocals are incredible – with a range that should have made her one of the leading ladies of soul in the 70s – and titles include "To Be Free", "I Need Love", "Wiping Tears", "Hold On this Time", "Talking About Freedom", and "My God My Freedom My Home".

Very righteous work from Fontella Bass – an album done after her time at Chess Records, and after her work in Paris with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – in a heartfelt, southern soul mode that's totally great! Fontella's back working with producer Oliver Sain, who first brought her fame back in the 60s – but the sound is a bit more sophisticated than before, drenched with roots from gospel and country soul, but also inflected with some of the more righteous modes of the early 70s, too. Fontella's vocals are incredible – with a range that should have made her one of the leading ladies of soul in the 70s – and titles include "To Be Free", "I Need Love", "Wiping Tears", "Hold On this Time", "Talking About Freedom", and "My God My Freedom My Home". 4 bonus tracks on this CD edition: "It Sure Is Good", "I'm Leaving The Choice To You", "Home Wrecker" and "It's Hard To Get Back In".

Walter Bishop Jr — Coral Keys ... CD
Black Jazz/Snow Dog (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $13.99 18.99
The keys are coral, and the sound is sublime – one of the greatest albums ever from pianist Walter Bishop Jr, and proof that he can really stretch out, given the right setting! The piano here is all acoustic, but there's an almost-electric vibe to the date – long, open tracks that sway and swell with some great spiritual energy – made even more wonderful by work from reedman Harold Vick, who plays tenor, flute, and soprano sax on the record – and makes it one of his best recordings ever! The reedwork alone is worth the price of admission – but the rhythms are also great too – a mix of soulful, modal, and some slight funky bits – handled by Reggie Johnson on bass, and either Idris Muhammad or Alan Benger on drums. Woody Shaw plays trumpet on some cuts, too – and titles include "Coral Keys", "Soul Turn Around", "Freedom Suite", "Track Down", "Waltz For Zweetie", and "Three Loves".

Black Slate — Amigo (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ensign/Big Break (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $14.99
A killer debut from Black Slate – one of the leading lights in British reggae at the start of the 80s – and a group with a warmly soulful sound! Black Slate have a great way of sounding smooth, but never too slick – a balance between their laidback energy and the mellow production modes of the set – all of which give them a vibe that's a bit like the best of Third World in the late 70s, although less commercial overall. The album's got a wonderfully warm appeal – and were it on Island Records, would have undoubtedly cracked the charts on this side of the Atlantic too. But it's also that overseas obscurity that makes it a bit more of a gem overall. Titles include "Amigo", "Sticks Man 80", "Boom Boom", "Romans", "Thin Line Between Love & Hate", and "Freedom Time". CD also features bonus tracks – "Black Slate Rock (12" version)", "Amigo (single)", and "Boom Boom (single)".

Both Worlds — Don'tcha Hide It ... LP
TPI, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Tripped out fusiony funk – with lots of great solo work! These guys have kind of a jazz rock approach (hence the "both worlds" name!) – one that makes for some tight bass and drum work, lots of choppy guitar, and spacey keyboards interlaced with some funkier horn solos. The production is a bit raw, which gives the record much more of an edge than you'd expect from a group like this – and even the sweeter vocal numbers come off with an honest indie feeling that makes us like them a lot. Includes the massive horn-heavy jazz dance tune "Coming On Strong", plus the cuts "Solide", "Don'tcha Hide It", "Stop Turn Around", "Leavin Them Days", "It's Love", and a cover of "Freedom Jazz Dance".

Anthony Braxton — Complete Arista Recordings Of Anthony Braxton (8CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Mid 70s. New Copy 8 CDs .... $139.99
An amazing moment in 70s jazz – the real rise of reedman Anthony Braxton, yet on a label that was also known mostly for pop, rock, and soul recordings! Braxton on Arista should have been a disaster – but instead, the label gave Anthony a huge amount of freedom – and, if anything, really allowed him to stretch out and explore all the rich range of ideas that were percolating in his genius – not just important small group recordings, solo sounds, and especially creative pairings – but also some large ensemble material that no tiny jazz label would have ever been able to support. Braxton really breaks out of the box on these sides – moving through an insane amount of new ideas and fresh sounds in the short space of five years – working with players that include Kenny Wheeler on trumpet, George Lewis on trombone, Henry Threadgill and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds, Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, Richard Teitelbaum on moog, Julius Hemphill on alto, Oliver Lake on tenor, and many other key 70s avant figures throughout these recordings. This limited package features a full book of notes – and includes the albums New York Fall 1974, Five Pieces 1975, Creative Orchestra Music 1976, Duets 1976, For Trio, Montreux/Berlin Concerts, Alto Saxophone Improvisations 1979, For Four Orchestras, and For Two Pianos. Most albums on CD for the first time ever!

Johnny Cash — Fabulous Johnny Cash (180 gram vinyl mono edition) ... LP
Columbia, 1959. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
Johnny's first LP for Columbia! His terse, spare Sun style is still in evidence here with a slightly more crisp and polished sound, but no less powerful thanks to that famous wobbly baritone. Johnny would soon start stretching out good and wide thanks to the full creative freedom Columbia provided, but you get nothing but the taught, rock solid early style here. Tracks include "One More Ride", "The Troubadour", "Pickin' Time", "Suppertime", "That's Enough", and "I Still Miss Someone".

Don Cherry — Complete Communion ... LP
Blue Note, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Arguably the best of Cherry's albums for Blue Note – and a real masterpiece of soulful avant playing! The group features Cherry on cornet, Gato Barbieri on tenor (and he's incredible, by the way!), Henry Grimes on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. Grimes and Blackwell are more than just timekeepers – and deliver a lot of the melody of the session, yet still never lose their sense of swing. Barbieri's fragile raw tone proves to be a good one to work with Cherry, even if there are a few touches of Ornette in his playing. The album's divided up into 2 long suites – "Complete Communion" and "Elephantasy" – both of which are excellent. A real treat – with no sloppiness, lots of fresh ideas, and a good sense of both freedom and control!

new Pietro Ciancaglini — Reincarnation Of A Lovebird – Homage To Charles Mingus ... CD
Rearward (Italy), 2009. New Copy .... $18.99
Beautiful music from Pietro Ciancaglini – the bassist of the excellent High Five Quintet, stepping out here as a leader on his own, in a very hip tribute to the late, great Charles Mingus! The music here is hardly the standard Mingus mode – even though many tracks were penned by Charles – and instead, Ciancaglini serves up some very cool small group takes on Mingus ideals, really reworking the original genius in a way that's more intimate – still very rich in feeling, but in very different ways than you'd get from the originals. His partners in the program include Daniele Tittarelli on alto, Max Ionata on tenor, Pietro Lussu on piano, and Walter Paoli on drums – and Javier Girotto plays baritone sax on a number of tracks as well. There's a warm, soulful feel to the record we really love – one that Mingus definitely would have approved of – and titles include "Homage", "Freedom", "Balarm", "Canon", "So Long Eric", "Reincarnation Of A Lovebird", "Nostalgia In Times Square", and "Haitian Fight Song".

John Coltrane — Om ... LP
Impulse, 1965. Very Good Gatefold .... $24.99
A pure statement of being and essence – and one of John Coltrane's spiritual masterpieces from the 60s! The 1965 recording was one of Trane's most adventurous so far – as it featured just one album-length track, building up out of relatively free expressions from Coltrane in the studio – initially in the spirit of Love Supreme, but much sharper-edged and unbridled overall – as if the meditative spirit of the previous recording had unlocked a sense of freedom that refused to be tied down to simple structures! The group is great – and features Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Donald Garrett on bass clarinet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – plus a bit of flute and percussion from Joe Brazil. The playing is much freer than on other albums of the time, but also has some introspective spiritual moments – clearly inspired by the Love Supreme recording, but taken a shade outside as well!
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear, a small center split on the bottom seam, and some peeling of the gloss, with some staining and peeling inside the gatefold.)

new Dadawah — Peace & Love ... CD
Dug Out (UK), 1974. Used .... $13.99
Hypnotic, organic and spiritual music from Rastafarian singer and hand drummer Ras Michael – organic, echoey, atmosheric drums, bass and trippy bits of keyboards – a very spacious backdrop for the freedom seeking lyricism! It’s very unique stuff, grounded in the spiritual vibes and organic instrumentation, and feeling akin to some of freely ambitious soul jazz of the time in spirit, with the roomiest of reggae rhythms. Titles include "Run Come Rally", "Seventy-Two Nations", "Zion Land" and "Know How You Stand", all long and hypnotic.

new Miles Davis — Filles De Kilimanjaro ... CD
Columbia, 1968. Used .... $3.99
A dark blend of acoustic and electric modes from Miles Davis – a set that still has him working with elements of the classic 60s quintet, but which also brings in a stronger emphasis on electric piano too! The rhythms here are really fantastic – ready to burst forth into a whole new direction, yet still not hitting the Bitches Brew level of freedom – and drummer Tony Williams may well be the real star of the set for his tremendous work on the kit – even though, as stated, the album's got some heavy electric piano contributions both from Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea! All titles feature Miles on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, and Tony Williams on drums – and the titles with Herbie feature Ron Carter on bass, while the rest with Chick Corea feature Dave Holland. Titles include "Frelon Brun", "Tout De Suite", "Petits Machins", "Mademoiselle Mabry", and "Filles De Kilimanjaro".

Tracks are long, and in compelling time structures – as indicated by the titles – and groove with an MPS-like approach to the work – strong solos bursting out from the larger band, and very strong rhythms pushing most of the tracks nicely over the top! Players include Ira Schulman, Ruben Leon, Dave Mackay, and Ron Starr – and titles include "Barnum's Revenge", "Upstart", "Thetis", "Orientation", and "Freedom Jazz Dance".

Jussi Fredriksson — Jazz Wars ... CD
Jussi Fredriksson (Finland), 2012. New Copy .... $11.99
The title's a bit misleading, as there's nothing warlike about this sweet little set – just lots of warm piano, Fender Rhodes, and minimoog from Jussi Fredriksson – served up in a really easygoing groove! The set begins with a relatively spacious feel – almost ECM at points – then builds to tighter jazz energy as the record moves on – with particularly strong contributions from Jukka Eskola on trumpet and flugelhorn – whose bold statements seem to really set fire to some of the tunes. The group's a sextet – also with tenor from Joonatan Rautio, guitar from Marzi Nyman, bass from Jori Huhtala, and drums from Jukkis Uotila – on titles that include "Battle", "Return", "No Doubts", "Hesitation", "Peace", "Freedom", and "Journey".

Capitol, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A fantastic lost psych album – with a moody spacey sound augmented by lots of organ, harpsichord, and electric piano! The best cuts are short and echoey – with kind of a trippy pop feel that sounds like post-Brit invasion lyricism, mixed with LA stoner freedom, and a good dash of Love-esque soul. Titles include Tim Hardin's great "You Upset the Grace of Living", "Hang Onto A Dream", and "Never Too Far" – plus a very cool version of "Nature Boy", and the tracks "Tiffany Rings", "I Watch The Moon", and "Me About You".

Stan Getz — Captain Marvel ... LP
Columbia, 1972. Very Good .... $3.99
A wicked album that's one of Stan Getz's best from the 70s! The record features Stan reunited with Chick Corea, whose warm lyricism was the lynchpin in Getz's landmark Sweet Rain – the stunning session from 1968 that is perhaps our favorite-ever Getz album. Corea plays electric piano here, but with none of the indulgence that he was lapsing into at the time. His blocky chords stake out a stark new territory, into which Getz solos beautifully, into a range yet untapped at that time in his career. Tony Williams augments the group on drums, giving the whole thing a sense of freedom, but also a nice tight swing. Tracks include "La Fiesta", "Five Hundred Miles High", "Times Lie", and "Day Waves".

PM/Shout (Japan), 1977. New Copy .... $19.99

The core trio features tremendous interplay between the hard-biting tenor of Steve Grossman the funky bass of Gene Perla, and slamming drums and percussion of Don Alias – and the set also features some great contributions from Jan Hammer on keyboard – playing Fender Rhodes and moog with a wonderfully funky, soulful style – quite different than some of his more jamming work with other artists. There's a really sharp, angular feel to the whole set – electric grooves that are heavy on rhythms, yet also have a nice sense of freedom on the tenor – and titles include "This Way Out", "Inmate Man", "Katonah", "Enya", and "In It".

Eddie Harris — In Sound ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1965. New Copy .... $15.99
We can never get enough of Eddie Harris – and a record like this is a great reason why! Despite all the many different settings Eddie worked in at Atlantic, he still always stayed true to his roots – and a record like this is a perfect example of that – no electric horn, no funk, but a rock-solid sense of tone and timing that's unbelievable – and which makes the album a soulful treasure throughout! Of course, the group really helps a lot too – keeping things as in the pocket as Eddie's playing – with great rhythms from Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. And as an added treat, the set features killer work on trumpet from Ray Codrington – a player who we only know from the JFK Quintet albums – but who's an equal killer here. Titles include the first version of Eddie's classic "Freedom Jazz Dance", plus "Born To Be Blue", "Love For Sale", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Cryin' Blues".

Gene Harris — Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow Vol 1 ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1973. New Copy .... $15.99
Gene Harris in three different periods – the past, present, and future – served up here in a record issued under Gene's name as a leader, but which still continues the vibe of the later records by the Three Sounds! Most of the work is trio material – with just Gene on acoustic piano, John Halton on acoustic and electric bass, and Carl Burnett on drums and percussion – but there's a fluid, reaching sort of feel that definitely echoes some of the larger productions that Harris was recording at the time – not full strings or heavy electrics, but a really complex approach to the material nonetheless! Tracks on this volume include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Hymn To Freedom", "Love For Sale", "Trieste", and "Something".

Coleman Hawkins — Hawk Flies High ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1957. Used .... $2.99
A key album in the reintroduction of Coleman Hawkins in the late 50s – recorded in a style that still bears a lot of traces of earlier years, but at a time when Hawk was being claimed as a key influence by a variety of younger modernists! The set's got a sense of freedom that's really surprising – especially on the longer numbers, which unfold with some playful instrumental twists that seem to come especially from trumpeter Idrees Sulieman and trombonist JJ Johnson – both of whom are great on the record. Other players include Hank Jones on piano, Barry Galbraith on guitar, and Oscar Pettiford on bass – and titles include "Juicy Fruit", "Think Deep", "Blue Lights", "Sanctity", and "Chant".

Itadi — Itadi ... CD
Hot Casa (France), 1977. New Copy .... $16.99
A rare Afro funk gem from Itadi – filled with righteous sounds and knowledge, and served up in a dubby groove that's pretty unique! Itadi hails from Togo, but already had experience in the US by the time of this recording – and the sound carries some cross-Atlantic styles that really make the whole thing stand out – almost echoes of Jamaican modes at time, fused with a delivery that's decidedly African – all coming out in a post-colonial style that's a bit like the best work from Cymande! Tracks spin out these rolling basslines that are tied together with riffing guitar and sweet organ lines – and although the lyrics are important, and often political, the infectious rhythmic approach of the record is what really sends things home – all at a pace that's quite different than both Nigerian or Ethiopian sounds of the time. Titles include "Dodzi", "Hustle", "Live In Other World", "Ayala", "Mama", "Peace & Freedom", and "Watch Your Life".

Eddie Jefferson — Main Man ... CD
Inner City, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 12.95
One of our favorite albums ever from Eddie Jefferson – one of the last sessions he ever recorded as a leader, and a stone cooker through and through! The arrangements here are by Slide Hampton, who hits a really soulful groove for the set – one that moves away from some of the more experimental modes of other Jefferson dates of the 70s, and hits a snapping, swinging style that moves Eddie back to his hippest modes of the 60s. Hampton plays trombone in the group, and other players include Charles Sullivan on trumpet, Richie Cole on alto, Junior Cook on tenor, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, and Harold Mabern on piano and electric piano. Leon Thomas produced the record, and Joyce Lawson guests as the female voice on a remake of "Moody's Mood For Love". Other titles include a killer version of Duke Pearson's "Jeannine" that is probably worth the price of the album alone – and there's also "Benny's From Heaven" and "Freedom Jazz Dance", both of which are great, too – plus "Summertime", "Exactly Like You", and "Night Train".

Eddie Jefferson — Things Are Getting Better ... LP
Muse, 1974. Very Good .... $6.99
One of the weirdest, wildest albums ever from Eddie Jefferson – a real standout classic that shows him retooling his sound for the 70s! After years of writing lyrics to James Moody and Charlie Parker tunes, Eddie lays out some crazy lyrics for modern jazz standards like "Freedom Jazz Dance" and "Bitches Brew", as well as "Night In Tunisia", which he'd never done before – and also offers up a great take on Cannonball's "Things Are Getting Better", not to mention Sly Stone's "Thank You Fallentinme Be Mice Elf Again"! There's a few more standard bop number in the mix too – like "Billie's Bounce" and "I Just Got Back In Town – and support is from a great group that includes Billy Mitchell on tenor, Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass, and Mickey Tucker on keyboards.

Syl Johnson — Is it Because I'm Black ... LP
Twinight/Numero, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $13.99 15.99
One of the best-ever soul albums to come out of Chicago – and it may well be one of the best soul albums ever! The set's the deepest that Syl Johnson ever recorded – and it takes all the hard, raw soul he forged on previous funky 45s – and spins it out in longer album format – with some wicked backings that more than keep up the funk from before, but which also help Johnson deepen the message of his tunes! The political vibe of the album comes through right away in the striking cover and title – and the title track is a 7 and a half minute gem – one of the boldest songs ever about disempowerment. Backings are by Jimmy Jones & The Pieces Of Peace – who really keep the sound deep throughout – and in addition to the classic title track "Is It Because I'm Black", other tunes include "Right On", "Together Forever", "Concrete Reservation", "Walk A Mile In My Shoes", "Black Balloons", and "I'm Talkin About Freedom".

new Syl Johnson — Is It Because I'm Black (limited edition) ... CD
Twinight, Late 60s. New Copy .... $11.99
An incredible new version of Syl Johnson's classic album Is It Because I'm Black – packaged here with a huge number of bonus cuts in a collection designed by Syl himself! The core album is one of the best ever soul albums to come out of Chicago – and it may well be one of the best soul albums to ever come out of the 60s! Syl Johnson mixes west side bluesy soul with some great Chicago soul arrangements by Jimmy Jones & The Pieces Of Peace – and the result is one of the heaviest soul albums you'll ever hear – hard-hitting and funky one minute, sweeter and more groovy the next – a wonderful portrait of the depth of Chicago soul at the time. Added to the original album are some tracks from later years – including a 2006 remake of "Is It Because I'm Black", some more conventional southern soul numbers from the early 70s, and Johnson's seminal 80s groover "Ms Fine Brown Frame". 20 tracks in all – with titles that include "Right On Sister", "Is It Because I'm Black", "Kiss By Kiss", "One Way Ticket", "Get Ready", "Black Balloons", "Walk A Mile In My Shoes", "Concrete Reservation", "Talk Bout Freedom", "New Day", "Your Love Is Good For Me", "That Is Why", "Together Forever", and "Tell The Truth".

The title certainly gets it right – as the album's an early showcase for the piano of Hank Jones – a talented touch that's already able to rise above most of his contemporaries! The date's a trio outing, and Jones is allowed a bit more freedom than the usual jazz musician on Capitol at the time – with backing from Milt Hinton on bass and Osie Johnson on drums – both players who really match Hank's mixture of lyricism and soul! There's a really careful balance on the record that already hints at Jones' long years in jazz to come – and titles include "The Blue Room", "If I Love Again", "Let Me Know", "Try A Little Tenderness", and "It's Easy To Remember".

The first-ever release of a great live date from pianist Oliver Jones – working here with a hip trio that features Reggie Johnson on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums! Jones gets plenty of room to open up in the relaxed format of the performance – often using a strong left hand to set the rhythms going, even before the bass and drums come into play – in ways that do a great job of mixing bluesy undercurrents with some lighter, more lyrical touches as well!
