Four Tops50th Anniversary – The Singles Collection 1964 to 1972 (3CD set) ... CD
Motown, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD .... $53.99 59.98
Massive music from one of the greatest Motown groups ever – served up here as a set of 78 singles from the 60s and early 70s – not just all the US releases for Motown, but also UK-only singles, Italian singles, and work with the Supremes as well! The lavish book-style set is done in the same mode as the excellent Complete Motown series from a few years back – with a heavy 7" cover, loads of color pages in the middle, and a wealth of information and photos – maybe the nicest set we've ever seen on the Four Tops! But the music here is more than enough, too – killer singles that mix big hits with more obscure numbers – on title that include "Sad Souvenirs", "Walk Away Renee", "The Key", "Still Water", "Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music", "You Keep Running Away", "If You Don't Want My Love", "I'll Never Change", "Can't Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind", "You Stole My Love", "Simple Game (UK version)", "Piangono Gli Uomini", "Gira Gira", and "Until You Love Someone".

new Four TopsMain Street People ... LP
ABC, 1973. Very Good Gatefold .... $3.99
Really nice work from The Four Tops – proof that they were still going quite quite strong after Motown! The album's got a hip sound that shows the group moving through a wider range of emotions than we ever remember – crafting rich deep harmonies that still stand apart from the big wave of sweet soul quartets of the early 70s, and which sparkle with all the emotion that Levi Stubbs' voice had to offer. Includes their great theme to Shaft In Africa, the track "Are You Man Enough" – plus loads of other great ones like "I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind", "It Won't Be The First Time", "Sweet Understanding Love", "Too Little, Too Late", "Peace Of Mind", and "Main Street People".
(Cover has some wear, some stains, and pen on the front.)

Four TopsStill Waters Run Deep ... LP
Motown, 1970. Very Good .... $4.99
Possibly the last big hit that the Four Tops ever cut for Motown – and proof that they could still turn out strong material, as was later proven by their work at ABC. The title cut – "Still Waters (Run Deep)" – is one of those always enjoyable, surprisingly sophisticated little pop soul tunes – and the record features a lot of other nice moments like "Love Is The Answer", "Reflections", "I Wish I Were Your Mirror", "Bring Me Together", and a reprise of "Still Waters". Nice use of moog, too!
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Four TopsYesterday's Dreams ... LP
Motown, 1968. Very Good .... $0.99
A mix of pop and soul – but in the hands of the Four Tops, just about any song takes on a new soulful life! The record features their minor hit "Yesterday's Dreams" – plus groovy versions of "Sunny", "Never My Love", "Daydream Believer", and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". Also includes nice lesser-known material like "Can't Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind", "Once Upon A Time", and "I'm In A Different World".
(Deep groove pressing. Cover has ring & edge wear, with some marker on the back.)

new Phyllis Hyman, Spinners, Four Tops, etc. — Fish That Saved Pittsburgh ... LP
Lorimar, 1979. Used .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
Great soundtrack to one of the best B-Ball films of the 70s, and certainly one of Stockard Channing's finest moments! Thom Bell wrote most of the stuff, and put it together with a sound that rivals some of his best 70s work. The album has vocal performances by Phyllis Hyman, The Spinners, and The Four Tops, but the real star is the arrangements, and the cool smooth studio sound that the music has. Tracks include "No One Does It Better", "Magic Mona", "Theme For LA's Team", "Moses Theme", "Chance Of A Lifetime", and the title cut.
(White label promo. Cover has some wear.)

new Johnny Pate/Four TopsShaft In Africa ... LP
ABC, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Out Of Stock
One of the greatest blacksploitation soundtracks ever – a massively beautiful record that goes beyond any cliches of the genre, and serves up a fantastically unique batch of tracks! Chisoul arranger Johnny Pate did the music for the film – and (dare we say it?) it's even greater that Issac Hayes' work for the first Shaft film – with a depth, sensitivity, and soul that's really amazing – and which has kept the record at the top of our crates for many years. The 4 Tops turn out a great later vocal on the album's theme tune "Are You Man Enough" – and Johnny himself does stellar work on the tracks "Shaft In Africa", "Headman", "You Can't Even Walk In The Park", "El Jardia", "Jazar's Theme", and "Truck Stop"!

Motown (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare Motown galore – and one of the best installments in the mighty Soul Satisfaction series! The set really opens up the Motown vaults – coming up with rare bits that move way past the hits and over-done oldies, into territory that sounds like nothing we remember from the mighty Detroit powerhouse of soul! There's a tremendous selection of work on this set – 24 tracks that include obscure singles from artists we never knew recorded for Motown, plus other work by artists who were bigger, but are represented here by some great lesser-known tunes! Titles include "Music Talk" and "Love A Go Go" by Stevie Wonder, "Time Is Passing By" by The Monitors, "My Kind Of Love" by The Satintones, "Who Wouldn't Love A Man Like That" by Mable John, "So Long" by Marvin Gaye, "Oh Lover" by Sheri Taylor & Sammi Ward, "Gonna Find A True Love" by Bottom & Co, "The Stranger" by Gladys Knight, "Ain't No Sun Since You've Been Gone" by Chuck Jackson, "I'd Be A Fool Right Now" by Stevie Wonder, "I Love You" by Chris Clark, "I Feel Like I'm Falling In Love Again" by Fantastic Four, "Can't Seem To Get You Out Of My Mind" and "Then" by Four Tops, "I Have Faith In You Baby" by Edwin Starr, and "The Chaperone" by La Brenda Ben & The Beljeans.

new Various — Steppin Across The USA – Volume 14 ... CD
Steppin Muzak, Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Steppin Muzak series goes strongly back to the 70s with this volume – throwing in a few cuts from later years, but mostly sticking with the great 70s mellow moments that first got us interested in the Chicago steppers scene many years back! There's some warm, wonderful moments here – including a number of cuts not easy to find on CD – and titles include "If It Takes All Night" by Soul Train Gang, "Countryside" by Fat Larry's Band, "Candy" by The Four Tops, "You're The One" by Ray Simpson, "I Found My Rainbow" by Touch Of Class, "Never Knew Love Like This Before" by Charles Earland, "Mutha's Love" by Bobby Franklin, "You Only Live Once" by Changing Tymes, "I Love The Way You Love" by Individuals, "Crazy About Your Love" by Robert Thomas, "Baby Take It Off" by Lenny Williams, and "Her Seedy Life" by Blue Zone UK.
(Note: Some of the titles here were mastered from vinyl sources – but we've been assured that the collection is legit.)

new Mary Wells — Something New – Motown Lost & Found – Original Recordings 1961 to 1964 ... CD
Motown/Hip-O Select, Early 60s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $36.99 39.98 Out Of Stock
A wealth of wonderful work from Mary Wells – a set that includes overlooked early singles, a huge amount of unreleased tracks, plus many others that weren't issued at the time – and which haven't been in print for years! This set not only brings together rare Motown singles from Mary, and bits from the Vintage Stock album – but also includes some that appeared on the early 90s Looking Back collection – and a lot more of which show up here for the first time ever! The music here not only shows Mary in formation, but Motown as well – trying out a whole host of different styles for Wells' great vocals – and really finding strong focus as the set rolls on. Mary's one of the first great solo singers for Motown – and the package features loads of solo numbers with her in the lead – plus a handful of numbers with the Supremes or Four Tops, one with The Temptations & Supremes, and one with Smokey Robinson – as well as seven more duets with Marvin Gaye! There's also a batch of "standards" – as Wells takes on the mode that Motown also tried with Marvin – and the package features a whopping 47 tracks in all, with very detailed notes. Titles include "Cinderella", "Is It Me Or Is It You", "Money", "Why Do You Want To Let Me Go", "When Your Lover Comes Back", "My Heart Is Like A Clock", "My World Of Dreams", "Your Loss My Gain", "Prove It", "Drop In The Bucket", "Everybody Needs Love", "Back In My Arms", "Oh Lover", "In Case You Need Love", "Again", "Always", "A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening", "Can't Get Out Of This Mood", and "This Is Something New".

Birds & Brass — Soundsational Sort Of Soul (Soundsational/Birds & Brass Are Back) ... CD
Rediffusion/RPM (UK), Early 70s. New Copy .... $6.99
Birds, brass, and plenty of grooves – two sublime UK sound library sets, back to back on a single CD! "Birds" here is used in the UK slang for women – and the combo sports wordless female vocals sliding along with the grooves – sneaking in and out of the brassier bits on the top with a "yeh yeh" sort of chorus approach, but one that's pretty musical overall! The best part of the music, though, is below the birds and the brass – the bottom, which is often quite funky, and has a soundtrack-styled sort of groove – rolling bass, snapping drums, bits of keyboards – all used in the best gently funky ways of the glory days of the Brit Easy scene. Most of the work here is the brainchild of arranger Keith Roberts – a lesser-known UK sound library figure, one who did a bit of work on Scott Walker's fourth album, but who really shines brightly here on his own. Titles include "Sort Of Soul", "Return To Montana", "Sunspot", "All Souled Out", "Time Key", "Pop Off The Tops", "New Dawn", "Melanie", "Sugar Sugar", "Funky Splanky", "The Kung Fu Kid", "Mexico Fiesta", "Fritzy Baby", and "Swamp Water".

new Corduroy — Very Yeah – The Director's Cut – Complete Compositions 1992 to 1996 (Dad Man Cat/High Havoc/Out Of Here/Quattro) (4CD set) ... CD
Acid Jazz/Cherry Red (UK), 1990s. New Copy 4 CDs .... $24.99
Four classic albums by this hip UK group – all with rare bonus tracks too! First up is the wonderful Dad Man Cat – our favorite record by one of the best funk records to ever come out of England! On this great debut album, Corduroy are a tight funky combo, with an organ and clavinet mod sound that still holds up damn well over the years. Their songwriting is great, and the groove on the set push way past the stock acid jazz riffing of the early 90s. Best example of this is "Skirt Alert", a cut that begins with an amazing drum break, then grooves into a Brazilian-inflected funk number, in the manner of Earth Wind & Fire's use of the idiom. Other tracks include "Chowdown", "How To Steal The World", "Electric Soup", "Money Is", and "Six Plus One". CD also features six bonus demo tracks! High Havoc is a real shift for Corduroy, who are opening their sound a lot here from earlier releases – showing that the group was way more than just one of London's many retro funk combos at the beginning of the 90s. The set includes the sublime track "Something In My Eye", a breezy bossa number that would almost put Brasil 66 to shame, and which we can guarantee will have you hitting the repeat button on your CD player again and again! Other tracks include "The Corduroy Orgasm Club", "Breakfast In Love", "Nobody Move", "Very Yeah", "Clearing Up Music", "Lovely Lonely & Loaded", and "The Frighteners". CD features 9 more bonus tracks – some previously unreleased! Next is Out Of Here – a record that's still heavily steeped in the 60s territory of previous releases, but one with a bit more of a mod feel overall! There's lots of heavy Hammond and guitar in the mix, and the vocals have a warm appeal too – kind of a blue-eyed soul take on mod London modes – served up here with a sound that's arguably tighter and more soulful than lots of current work of this nature! Corduroy was always a group that never fully got its due – and with records like this under their belt, they were easily one of the hippest acts on the Acid Jazz imprint at the time. Titles include "Don't Wait For Monday", "Practice What You Preach", "Magic Carpet", "January Woman", "Mini", "Motorhead", "Along The Rooftops", "End Of The Rainbow", and "Red Mercury". CD features 7 more bonus tracks – a number of unissued demos! Last up is Quattro – Live In Japan 1994 – a great little live set from Corduroy – recorded late in their career, but with the stripped down funky feel of their best early work! The album was recorded in Japan – but the groove is pure London jazz funk all the way, with a tight mix of keyboards and riffing guitars, electrically grooving in a very soulful way. Includes versions of "Skirt Alert", "Something In My Eye", "Mini", "Money is", "London, England", "Electric Soup", "E Type", "The Frighteners", and "Chow Down".

Sign Of FourHammer, Anvil, & Stirrup ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $12.99
A totally great little set from Sign Of Four – a project of Miles Newbold from the Natural Yogurt Band – served up with an approach to exotic jazz funk that's even trippier than his previous work! Miles plays a load of live instruments here – vibes, flute, guitar, percussion, and keyboards – all sifted and filtered together with some cool studio work to sound very vintage, and very offbeat – like some weird Eastern take on American soul jazz of the 60s, or like a garage band trying their best to sound like Sun Ra! The music is some of the best new work we've ever heard on the Jazzman label – and really feels a lot more like some lost exotic record from years back – with titles that include "Samba Moderno", "Morocco", "Topsy Turvy", "Mirage", "Morphine", "Fruit Juice For Everyone", and "Sun Suite Humulus Lupulus". 11 tracks on the CD.
Also available: Hammer, Anvil, & Stirrup (2 x 10" vinyl pressing) ... LP $22.99
