Rootsy grooves from Forro In The Dark -- a group of Brazilian ex-pats living in New York, all with a great ear for freshening up the classic genre referenced in their name! Although the music is strongly in a forro mode, it's also got a more contemporary vibe than most recordings you'll hear of the Brazilian genre -- somewhat lighter, and a bit more upbeat -- yet still all very acoustic and earthy, without any gimmicks or remix elements you might find in other revival projects of this nature. In fact, there's almost a more gentle, personal quality here than we've ever heard in "real" forro sets -- one that really shows an evolution of the genre in the hands of these younger talents -- pointing the music a forward-thinking direction that may well have it enjoying the same sort of global appreciation that's been given to bossa nova and samba in recent years. Titles include "Anao De Jardim", "Silence Is Golden", "Baiao Embolado", "Better Than You", "Nonsensical", "Saudades De Manezinho Araujo", and "Bandinha".

Lively instrumental interplay between the guitar of Yamadu Costa and accordion of Dominguinhos -- ringing out beautifully in a complicated mix of choro and forro styles! The performance is a live one, but captures the intimacy of the pair nicely -- with lots of focus on their instrumental prowess and collaborative energy on the stage -- almost making you forget there's a large crowd watching as they spin out musical lines with each other. DVD features 22 tracks in all -- including "Wave", "Bagualito", "Estrada Do Sol", "Te Cuida Rapaz", "Molambo", "Perigoso", "Odeon", "Velho Realejo", "Doce De Coco", "Tesouro E Meio", and "Chorando Baixinho". Approximately 77 minutes long, with subtitles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Nice set of jazzy tracks by Brazilian drummer Pascoal Meirelles, and one that mixes jazz and forro styles into a unique blend with a very fresh sound, thanks in part to his crack sextet. The lineup includes tenor, alto, and keyboards -- plus bass and percussion. With the tracks "Forro Brabo", "P'ro Moura", "BPC", "Jazz Riff", "Mr. Arthur Maia Suite", and "Chorino Da Paula".

Beautiful solo work from Sivuca -- but done with a really full sound overall! Given that Sivuca's probably one of the greatest accordion players of the past century or so -- a Brazilian equivalent of Astor Pizzaolla, both in terms of technique and rich breadth of imagination -- a solo setting is anything but staid -- as Sivuca soars up and down the keys of his instrument, in a flurry of tones and colors that are amazing! There's a Brazilian groove to most numbers, although a few tracks also show some European echoes too -- and Sivuca also sings a bit, and plays solo piano on a few tracks. Titles include "Subindo Ao Ceu", "Aboio", "Quando Me Lembro", "Dino Pintando O Sete Cordas", "Guacira", "Em Nome Do Amor", "Ainda Me Recordo", and "Forro Praieiro".
