Very righteous work from Fontella Bass – an album done after her time at Chess Records, and after her work in Paris with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – in a heartfelt, southern soul mode that's totally great! Fontella's back working with producer Oliver Sain, who first brought her fame back in the 60s – but the sound is a bit more sophisticated than before, drenched with roots from gospel and country soul, but also inflected with some of the more righteous modes of the early 70s, too. Fontella's vocals are incredible – with a range that should have made her one of the leading ladies of soul in the 70s – and titles include "To Be Free", "I Need Love", "Wiping Tears", "Hold On this Time", "Talking About Freedom", and "My God My Freedom My Home". 4 bonus tracks on this CD edition: "It Sure Is Good", "I'm Leaving The Choice To You", "Home Wrecker" and "It's Hard To Get Back In".

One of the all-time classics from Harry Belafonte – thanks to sweet arrangements from Tony Scott! Titles include the classic "Day O", plus "The Jack Ass Song", "Hosana", "Brown Skin Girl", "Man Smart", and "Jamaica Farewell".

A mighty helping of music from the overlooked Mitty Collier – a 60s soul singer on Chess Records, and one who was every bit as great as bigger label stars like Etta James or Fontella Bass! Like both of those singers, Mitty's got a voice that grabs you right from the get-go – a deeply soulful approach to her music that's really fresh and without cliche – especially considering she got her start belting out tunes years before some of the bigger names in 60s female soul, and managed to keep things mighty real all the years she was working at Chess. Production and arrangements here are all top shelf – handled by Phil Wright, Riley Hampton, and others – and the CD offers up 24 gems from Mitty's years at Chess – the a-sides of all 15 singles cut for the label, plus 9 more great tunes from the flips! An excellent batch of hard soul grooves from the great Laura Lee! This one was her first for the Hot Wax label – and it's got the raw quality of her earlier singles for labels like Chess, with a hard vocal style that's very much in the Aretha Franklin/Fontella Bass camp – plus some arrangements that have that bouncing soulful quality that the Staple Singers were using on Stax at the time! There's lots of horns in the mix, and some congas as well, which gives the album a bit of a different twist – kind of an earthy undercurrent that works great with the vocals. Includes the great title cut "Women's Love Rights" – plus "I Don't Want Nothin' Old (But Money)", "Wedlock Is a Padlock", "Her Picture Matches Mine", and "Two Lovely Pillows". CD features a bonus track – "Since I Fell For You (mono commercial single edit)".

The second full length offering from one of our favorite new groups on Ninja, and once again J. Swinscoe & crew live up to their name, creating sweeping soundscapes that build slowly and set the mood just so. They seem to be exploring a slightly more jazzy/soulful route this go 'round, and are joined on 2 tracks by St. Louis soul diva Fontella Bass, and clearly there was a great meeting of their minds, rather than the sort of pasting-someone-else's-vocals-over-the-top-of-your-track sort of approach too many of today's artists favor. Roots Manuva contributes vocals on another number, but his contribution comes off as more of a recitation than a rap, and works beautifully! The tracks are all fairly lengthy, none clocking in less than 6 minutes, evolving and building as they do, our favorites are "All That You Give", "Burnout" and "Everyday". In a really nice, glossy jacket, to boot!

A really great album from Fire – a set that has the trio expanded way more than usual, into jazz orchestra form – and working here in a style that's wonderfully soulful and spiritual overall! The set isn't just a spiritual jazz outing – as it's got these really unique flavors and colors that still echo the intensity of the previous Fire trio outings, but which spread the energy out over the larger ensemble, then give it a lot more focus too – less improvisation, and instead some really visionary arrangements that make the whole thing shine brilliantly from start to finish. There's a bit of vocals, which are tremendous too – almost echoing some of the Fontella Bass work with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, but darker too. Mats Gustafsson conducts the group – and really blows us away with his efforts – and the set features one long two part composition – with performances by Sten Sandell on piano and electronics, Mariam Wallentin and Sofia Jernberg on voice, Magnus Broo and Emil Strandberg on trumpet, Jonas Kullhammar on bass sax, Fredrik Ljungkvist on baritone and clarinet, and Mats himself on tenor and live electronics!

Some great work that will completely redefine your ideas about calypso music – especially if they're mostly relegated to cliches about Harry Belafonte! The tracks here were all recorded by Rupert "Lord Invader" Grant in New York during the late 40s and early 50s – and done with a rough-edged quality that really lives up to the dynamic promise of the title! Most tunes are heavy on acoustic percussion underneath the vocals – used starkly and strongly to underscore the brash lyrics of the songs. CD features 17 tracks that include "Chicago Chicago", "New York Subway", "Out The Fire", "Ten Thousand To Bar Me One", "Cousin Family", "When You Hear I Die", "Labor Day", and "Brown Girl In The Ring".

A pair of overlooked gems from Nancy Wilson – on CD for the first time ever! The Sound Of Nancy Wilson is mighty darn groovy – a wonderful blend of upbeat late 60s modes, and some of the more compressed class of her earlier years! Arrangements are by Jimmy Jones, who finds just the right balance of jazz and soul to work perfectly with Wilson – so that when things are bouncy and swinging, she's got the punch to beat all the younger soul singers who were copping her game at the time – and when they're mellow, she shows that she can still blow anyone else out of the water on a sad-tinged ballad! Familiar tunes are reworked wonderfully by Jones – who definitely gives them all the sound of Nancy here – and titles include the righteous "Black Is Beautiful", plus "Below Above", "The Rules Of The Road", "Peace Of Mind", "The Other Side Of The Tracks", "It Only Takes A Moment", "Alone With My Thoughts Of You", and "This Bitter Earth". Sublime soul from Anna King – a James Brown-produced sock-soul diva who predated Marva Whitney and Lyn Collins! "Get These Memories" is done in a wonderful way – tight snapping drums underneath, and some really hard-wailing raw vocals from Anna over the top – making the tune sound like you've never heard it before! "If Somebody Told You" is a slower blusier number – one that has Anna really going over the top on vocals – blowing away Etta James, Fontella Bass, and all other comers!

Incredible work from a singer we'd never heard before – but who should have been huge, given the quality of these tunes! Pearl's got an amazing sound that's right out of the "birth of soul" era in which she recorded – a hard soul approach that's steeped in influences from earlier R&B years, but which comes across with a straightforward power that echoes later classics by 60s divas like Aretha Franklin or Fontella Bass.
