Louis Armstrong, Tyree Glenn & Tommy Gwaltney — Satchmo At The National Press Club – Red Beans and Rice-ly Yours ... LP
Folkways, 1972. Very Good+ .... $14.99
One of the last live appearances by Louis Armstrong – presented here in a really charming little album, issued in a small pressing by The National Press Club! The album's a great document of all the Armstrong charms in one package – as Louis talks as much as he plays – telling stories and speaking about the music on the first half of the set. The second half then features material recorded after Armstrong's passing – with Tyree Glenn and Tommy Gwaltney keeping up the vibe, especially on some of the spoken passages where Glenn talks about Louis! The sound quality is a bit "broadcast"-styled at the start – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Royal Garden Blues", "Love For Sale", "Crazy Rhythm", and "It's Alright With Me".
(Note: Cover has water damage/peeling on the bottom few inches. Includes booklet.)

Dock Boggs — Doc Boggs Vol 2 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Folkways, 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.98
Some of the moodiest sounds you'll ever hear in a record to feature banjo as the main instrument – a classic set of recordings from the legendary Dock Boggs! The set was put together by Mike Seeger, who also plays a bit of guitar on the record – but most of the sounds are up-close, very personal work by Boggs – whose voice has as much character as his inventive sounds on the banjo. Titles include "Wise County Jail", "Brother Jim Got Shot", "Little Black Train", "Danville Girl", "Old Joe's Barrom", and "Glory Land".
(Super-heavy vinyl and cover – just like an original Folkways pressing!)

Elizabeth Cotten — Freight Train & Other North Carolina Folk Songs & Tunes (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Folkways, 1958. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.98
Beautiful guitar work from Elizabeth Cotten – much more sensitive and lyrical than you might expect – with a warmth that really goes beyond the usual Folkways record of this nature! Elizabeth sings on the set at points – in this raspy, time-worn style that's pretty compelling on its own – but honestly, it's the guitar that really grabs us – played with deftness that's impressive, and a sense of greater sound that really shows some unique phrasing throughout. Titles include "Freight Train", "Run Run Mama Your Son Done Gone", "Spanish Flang Dang", "When I Get Home", "Vastopol", and "I Don't Love Nobody".
(Super-heavy vinyl and cover – just like an original Folkways pressing!)

East New York Ensemble De Music — At The Helm ... LP
Folkways, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.99
An extremely righteous bit of soul jazz – originally issued in a very small pressing by Folkway Records, at a time when the label was doing some great underground recordings! The sound is loose and free – spiritually building in a manner that recalls the work of Ahmed Abdul Malik, Phil Cohran, and some of the AACM – and the album has a style that's exploratory, but never goes too far out, or loses its sense of rhythm and swing. Tracks are longish, and the core group features soprano sax and Korean reeds by Bilal Abdurahman and vibes by Ameen Nuraldeen – plus guest work on bass by James Smith, and appearances by a lot of different world percussion players. There's a nice Eastern feel to some of the tracks, and titles include "Mevlana", "Ti Ti", "Sun Flower", and "Bent El Jerusalem".
(Reissued in replica of the original Folkways release.)

new Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble — Entourage (180 gram vinyl with download) ... LP
Folkways, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance".
(Super-heavy vinyl and cover – feels like a vintage record on Folkways! Includes download card.)

new Cha Cha Shaw — Into Morning (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Folkways, 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rough-edged batch of spiritual jazz tracks from trumpeter Charles "Cha Cha" Shaw (not to be confused with Charles "Bo Bo" Shaw) – recorded in an open-ended loft jazz mode with a really open, echoey feel! The album's a rare 70s jazz date on the Folkways label, and it's almost got the freer, open sound of an ESP session from a decade before – experimental jazz that's very much at the fringes, but also played with some of the spirituality of the post-Coltrane generation. Shaw's trumpet has a really earthy sort of feel – blown with a great sense of personality, and a sound that's almost heart-wrenching at times – especially on some of the more modal numbers. Other players include Brian Ross on tenor, Billy Lyes on piano and guitar, and Ronnie Boykins on bass. Boykins is really the only player we know here from other records – and titles include the nicely grooving "KZ", plus "Juggety", "Super Slik", and "Eternal".
(Super-heavy vinyl and cover – feels like a vintage record on Folkways!)

new Roscoe Holcomb — Close To Home (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Folkways, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.98 Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from Roscoe Holcomb – a set recorded in the mid 70s, but one with a timeless quality that belies Holcomb's deep roots in eastern Kentucky! All tunes feature just a bit of guitar or banjo, and Holcomb's incredible vocals – inflected with a life's worth of rich experience into a mode that's almost more blues than folk at points – a key illustration of the way the genres can blur across cultural lines, if you know where to look. Titles include "Motherless Children", "Train That Carried My Girl From Town", "Frankie & Johnny", "In London City", "Walk Around My Bedside", and "The Village Churchyard".
(Super-heavy vinyl and cover – just like an original Folkways pressing!)

new Lucinda Williams — Ramblin' On My Mind (aka Ramblin') ... LP
Folkways, 1979. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.98 Out Of Stock
Classic folk blues and acoustic Americana from Lucinda Williams – her first record for Folkways – recorded at Malaco Studios with just Lucinda's naturally wonderful vocals, 12 string strumming, and 6 string accompaniment by John Grimaudo! Ramblin' finds Lucinda doing passionate, but somehow kind of relaxed renditions of a numbers from blues, folk and traditional canon, numbers by Robert Johnson, Memphis Minnie, Hank Williams, the Carter Family and others. Lucinda was much more celebrated decades later, but nothing she's done works better than the Folkways era for our ears. Includes "Ramblin' On My Mind", "Me And My Chauffer", "Malted Milk Balls", "Disgusted", "Drop Down Daddy", "Jambalaya", "Satisfied Mind" and more.
(Reissued in replica of the original Folkways release including the original information booklet.)

Various — Work Hard, Play Hard, Pray Hard – Hard Time, Good Time, & End Time Music (3LP set) ... LP
Tompkins Square, 1920s/1930s. New Copy 3 LPs .... $33.99 45.98
An amazing portrait of America between the wars – served up over dozens of vintage 78rpm recordings – all based around themes of daily life mentioned in the title! The collection is an incredible historical document – pulled mostly from the collection of Louisville 78 collector Don Wahle, and remastered and re-presented beautifully by the folks at Tompkins Square – who not only sort the songs into key categories, but also provide a wealth of notes and images to further illuminate the tunes! There's a number of tracks on here that have never been reissued before, mixed with others that are still plenty darn rare – and the 3LP vinyl version comes in a beautiful box that reminds us a bit of classic Folkways – the size of which allows for a bigger, nicer booklet! It features 42 tracks that include "Climbing The Golden Stairs" by Happy Four, "Oh Declare His Glory" by McDonald Quartette, "Fourth Of July At The County Fair" by Bill Chitwood, "Tennessee Coon Hunt" by Whit Gaydon, "Hide Away" by Oscar Ford, "Poor Man Rich Man" by David McCarn, "Driving Saw Logs On The Plover" by Pierre La Dieu, and "Flat Wheel Train Blues (parts 1 & 2)" by Red Gay & Jack Wellman.

new Sid Hemphill — Devil's Dream – Alan Lomax Recordings ... LP
Mississippi, 1942. New Copy .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from the delta – but way different than the usual blues you might expect! Sid Hemphill is a really unique talent – a multi-instrumentalist who made most of the records heard on this set – and a strong proponent of the earlier Mississippi use of panpipes! The local variant heard here is referred to as "quills" – and often mixed with a rocking fiddle accompaniment in the background – moving up and down with kind of a devilish quality that really sets an edge underneath the rough-edged vocals, too! Also, the vintage recording feel also gives the music a very offbeat feel – and from the notes inside the package, it sounds like Alan Lomax really worked hard to track down these sounds of Sid's. Titles include "The Devil's Dream", "Leather Britches", "Sidewalks Of New York", "Rye Straw", "Boll Weevil", "Jesse James", and "Come On Boys Let's Go To The Ball".
(Comes with a cool booklet – and with the heavy vinyl and cover, feels like a vintage record on Folkways!)
