new Oliver Nelson — Skull Session ... LP
Flying Dutchman, 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A beautiful bit of funky jazz – and one of the unsung gems in the early 70s Flying Dutchman catalog! Oliver Nelson leads a number of different groups that are filled with funky electric players – like Mike Wofford, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Denis Budimir – and the record's filled with cool moog, arp, and keyboard grooves that are unlike anything you'll find on any other of Nelson's albums. Some cuts are more big band oriented, but the best ones are nice and funky. Titles include "Skull Session", "125th And 7th Ave", "Flight For Freedom", "Baja Bossa", and "Dumpy Mama".

new Gil Scott-Heron — Winter In America ... LP
Strata East/TVT, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful jazzy classic, and perhaps Gil Scott-Heron's most perfectly realized album ever! The record has a completely sophisticated jazzy approach – one that's miles ahead from even Gil's previous work on Flying Dutchman, and which shows him to be one of the most distinctive and emotive vocalists in soul and jazz over the past 25 years. The album contains the monster dancefloor track "The Bottle", which went on to be a huge hit in many versions – but it's also got loads of gentle, fragile songs (the kind of work by Gil that we like the best, and which show him as a deeply emotional and complicated artist, with a richness that still yearns to be tapped fully. Classics include "Peace Go With You Brother" and the original version of "Your Daddy Loves You".

new Piero Umiliani with Gato Barbieri — Una Bella Grinta ... LP
CAM/Cinedelic (Italy), 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $22.99 Out Of Stock
An amazing set of modern jazz – penned by Italian film composer Piero Umiliani, but also played by a very hip group headed by a young Gato Barbieri! Although Gato's probably best known for his late 60s appearances on the American scene, and his 70s dates for Impulse and Flying Dutchman – his earlier work in Italy is all pretty darn great, and this set shows the budding modernist to be in very strong company with a lineup that includes Enrico Rava on trumpet and Franco D'Andrea on piano, plus bass and drums. Side one of the record features full orchestrations by Umiliani – still plenty jazzy, with some great horn passages and cool use of vibes. Then side two features Umiliani's music played by the small group with Gato in the lead – a really great mix of modes that make the soundtrack a real standout, both in the Italian jazz and film scenes of the 60s. Titles include "Jazz Alla Vivaldi", "Ballata Della Bassa Padana", "Brass Fugato", "Una Bella Grinta", "Lontananza", "Sequenze Autostrata", "Free Theme", and "Hammond Blues"
Also available: Una Bella Grinta ... CD $16.99
