Section 25From The Hip ... LP
Factory, 1984. Near Mint- ... $49.99
An overlooked electronic gem from the Factory Records scene – the third album by Section 25, done in a style that's completely different than the group's other work! The sound here is extremely stripped-down – very much in the mode of New Order's first few singles, with a love of electric beats and keys, turned towards simple Brit pop themes done with nice hints of darkness. There's almost a post-Kraftwerk sound to the whole thing – like filtering "Computer Love" and "Tour De France" into catchier, more upbeat territory – yet without losing any of their quality or charm. And as a whole, the album works wonderfully – sliding from one track to the next, and making for an incredibly held-together set that was rare for the time. Tracks include "The Process", "Looking From A Hilltop", "Reflection", "Prepare To Live", "Program For Light", "Desert Beneath The Blade", and "Inspiration". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has light wear, bumped corners, and a small chewed portion at the opening.)

✨✧ Paul ParrishForest Of My Mind ... LP
Music Factory, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A pretty incredible bit of late 60s psych pop by singer-songwriter Paul Parrish – and with quite a bit of funk in the mix, thanks in no small part to the Detroit session players – with arrangements by Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey! Paul Parrish never became a household name, but he's hugely talented – with a big vocal presence here, and he wrote most of the songs himself – save for a couple nicely chosen covers of Lennon-McCartney and Holland-Dozier-Holland gems. The arrangements are fantastic, with swirling strings, jazz funk flute and other adventurous touches. Titles include "English Sparrows", "Suzanne", the trippy "Walking In The Forrest (Of My Mind)", "Tiny Alice", "Morning Train", "Flowers In The Park", "The White Birds (Return To Warm Seas)", "I Can't Help Myself" and more. ✨✧ Section 25Key Of Dreams ... LP
Factory (Belgium), 1982. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The second album from Section 25 – and much more tripped-out and experimental than the first! The group are still very much in a dark-edged Factory Records vein on this one – but the overall sound is looser and freer, with more of a sense of jamming – and more of a psychedelic vision overall, one that frees them from the shadow of some of their contemporaries. The group are producing themselves this time around, with a real fascination for guitar tones and textures – one that really overtakes the vocals on most of the album. Titles include "Always Now", "Visitation", "Regions", "No Abiding Place", "There Was A Time", and "Wretch". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Oliver NelsonBlues & The Abstract Truth (80s pressing) ... LP
Impulse/MCA, 1961. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the all-time classics of early 60s mainstream jazz – and a beautiful record that showcases writing and arranging talents of Oliver Nelson! Nelson had been bumping around a variety of sessions before this one – as a leader, sideman, and arranger – but it was with this album that his true talents really unfolded – sparkling with a depth of imagination and expression that marked him as one of the greatest artists in 60s American jazz! The group on the set is an all-star sextet – featuring Paul Chambers, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Roy Haynes, and Freddie Hubbard – a disparate group of players who manage to come together with Nelson and find a unique voice that's rarely been duplicated again! The album features 6 fantastic compositions by Nelson, including "Stolen Moments", "Hoe Down", and "Yearnin". A fantastic record – and one that you can't go wrong with! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Herb AlpertBeyond ... LP
A&M, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An incredible later record from Herb Alpert – working in a soulful funky fusion mode that really is well beyond the style that made him famous in the 60s! We love the easy breezy 60s sound of Herb & The Tijuana Brass too, but he really stepped up his game in exciting ways on records like Rise, and he takes some even further, previously unexplored creative steps on Beyond, this aptly titled set! Plenty of smoothed out funky fusion grooves, especially on the first half of the record, but by the midway point he's also dabbling in Spanish guitar inflected melodies, bringing in some spacey electronics and sequencing, and other daring twists – but never compromises on the consistently groovy feel overall. Includes "Kamali", "The Continental", "Reach For The Stars", "Red Hot", "Beyond", "Keep It Goin'", "The Factory" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ BloodstoneTrain Ride To Hollywood – Original Soundtrack ... LP
London, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Bloodstone's augmented here by a heck of a lot of studio players – more than enough to fill out the needs of the soundtrack to this so-so film from the mid 70s. A few cuts still have the group singing in their better harmony style, but more than a few numbers are remakes of 50s vocal group classics or older standards – in a mode that clearly shows that Bloodstone's control over the score was maybe not as strong as that of other groups working on soundtracks at the time. Titles include "Yakety Yak", "Hooray For Romance", "Go To Sleep", "I'm In Shape", and "Money". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fela & Africa 70Confusion ... LP
EMI (UK), Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Really mindblowing work from Fela – a seminal 70s set that may well open up even more than any other album from the time – as the leader and Africa 70 stretch out on a single track that takes up the entire record! "Confusion" is almost proggish at the start – with a long passage that just features drums from Tony Allen and some really offbeat electric piano from Fela – slowly building up a groove out of the darkness, then letting the rest of the group come into the mix – all at a level that definitely sets the tune on fire for the righteous politics of the lyrics! The whole thing's no sloppy, over-extended jam – and instead, the record's a great demonstration of the care and craft that Fela brought to his musical vision at the time. LP, Vinyl record album
(2014 reissue on Knitting Factory.)

✨✧ Rose RoyceIn Full Bloom ... LP
Whitfield, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A big one for Norman Whitfield – who found in Rose Royce what he'd been lacking for years – a hit group ready to handle a number of styles, all well, and all with an adventurous style that would break them past the legions of lackluster funky soul groups of the late 70s. The record blends the band's more famous funky styles with smoother jazzy soul that's almost in a Minnie Riperton mode – and which is made even more so by the sweet lead vocals of Rose Norwalt. She's heard to best effect on the cuts "Wishing On A Star" and "Ooh Boy" – and other funkier numbers include "Do Your Dance", "Funk Factory", and "It Makes You Feel Like Dancing", which are all filled with great keyboards and nice spacey grooves. ✨✧ BauhausIn The Flat Field ... LP
4AD (UK), 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The debut of Bauhaus, one of the first albums on the 4AD label, and the start of a legacy that would have huge ripples for the next decade or two in underground music! At a time when so much of the British scene was caught up in post-punk modes, Bauhaus appeared to almost rework the best ideas of the early 70s – taking the best of Bowie, Bolan, and some of the glam world – and giving it a moody vibe that's almost without referent – especially when you consider that nobody had ever thought of the idea of goth in music before this! And while we might use that word, Bauhaus are hardly goth at all – just, sadly, the inspiration for countless lower grade sounds to come – and there's a real sense of urgency here that belies that darkness in the music – at a level that maybe could have had them being one of the great post-Joy Division challengers on Factory, had they been pitched a bit differently. Still, all references aside, the album's a great one to just dive into on its own – with titles that include "The Spy In The Cab", "Double Dare", "In The Flat Field", "Stigmata Martyr", "Nerves", and "God In An Alcove". ✨✧ Dead Can DanceDead Can Dance ... LP
4AD (UK), 1984. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The start of a wonderful run of sounds – the debut album from Dead Can Dance, and a set that's maybe more linked to the larger world of 4AD Records than some of their later material! All the moody touches we love are already in place – those amazing ancient-sounding vocals of Lisa Gerrard, and that blend of exotic percussion and European string instrumentation that works surprisingly well – yet there's also elements that echo a bit of the Factory Records groups, and maybe other 4AD work – stronger drum patterns at points, and maybe a bit more coldness in the production. That blend makes for a record that's a great step after hearing Joy Division or groups of that nature – and titles include "Musica Eternal", "A Passage In Time", "East Of Eden", "Threshold", "The Fatal Impact", "Fortune", and "Ocean". A sweet 70s set on Capricorn Records – one from a time when the label was moving away from a more slavishly southern sound, and really opening up to some other currents of the period! The group have a nice way of harmonizing on the vocals, with some slight rootsy elements in the instrumentation, supported with richer backings overall – maybe a style that's a more southern take on the territory of America, with a slightly more AOR vibe overall. Titles include the great "She's A Mystery", plus "World On A String", "Lonely In Churchville", "I'm Never Alone", "Tie Me", and "We Got Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fela & Africa 70Expensive Sh*t ... LP
Barclay (France), 1975. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real classic from the great Fela Kuti – a seminal mid 70s record that not only shows his impeccable sense of rhythm, but also his sense of rage as well! The title track – "Expensive Sh_t" – is Fela's answer to the time that he got busted for dope, and was forced to take a dump for the cops in order to "produce the goods" (which he had cleverly hidden in his stomach). The track has a great choppy funk groove, and is filled with the kind of raw anger you can imagine that the subject matter would produce – rich emotion that not only comes out in the lyrics, but also the sharp instrumental solos! The other track on the album – "Water No Get Enemy" – is another fantastic one, with cool electric piano solos, great tenor work, and a slinkily vamping groove. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fela & Africa 70He Miss Road ... LP
Sterns, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A gem of a set from the legendary Fela Kuti – a classic set of Nigerian grooves produced by Ginger Baker – who was already a frequent musical partner of Fela! The set's got a sharp groove right from the start, and possibly some slighty darker elements than some of Kuti's other records of the time – particularly in the way the guitars echo out next to the saxophones, which are often highlighted by the wonderful rhythms of the great Tony Allen! "Monday Morning In Lagos" is a really blue-tinged track that goes beyond the usual Afro Funk of the time – one of those moments when it seems as if there's a surprising link between Fela's Africa 70 group and Sun Ra's Arkestra. "He Miss Road" is a burning, building groove that has the keyboards layered up strongly with the saxes – and "It's No Possible" is a great side-long track with this really wonderful use of electric piano – again sometimes at a level that almost feels Sun Ra-like! 20th Century/Tattoo, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest horror soundtracks ever – an intense bit of work that builds on the vocal choral style of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, using male and female voices in union with staccato orchestrations to invoke a fiercely tense mood – one that works perfectly for the spooky undercurrents of the film! The approach is amazing – and even on the mellower numbers, there's a real sense of danger lurking that makes for one heck of a spooky record – maybe even more so than some later, starker soundtracks – given the subtle approach of Jerry Goldmsith. Tracks include "The Piper Dreams", "The Fall", "The Altar", "Ave Santani", "The Demise Of Mrs Baylock", and "Killer's Storm". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Talk TalkLaughing Stock ... LP
Polydor/Verve (UK), 1991. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An incredible swan song from Talk Talk – a group that nobody would have guessed would go in this direction from the early years of their catchy crossover new romantic pop! The sound here is something else entirely – a fully-formed extension of the ideas they'd been exploring on Spirit Of Eden – in these beautiful soundscapes guided by Mark Hollis and the rest of the group – and filled in with work from a range of jazz and string players, including the legendary Brit jazz trumpeter Henry Lowther! There's a sense of denseness and texture that really marks the music – and a lot more warmth than similar 80s projects that might have come from 4AD, Factory, or ZTT – instead almost a "new subtlety" that had a huge influence on so many other groups to come. Tracks include "Myrrhman", "Ascension Day", "After The Flood", "Taphead", "New Grass", and "Runeii". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyLush Side Of Cannonball ... LP
EmArcy, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully mellow set of ballads recorded by Cannonball, with orchestral backings by Richard Hayman. The album's typical of the kind of "all over the map" approach that Mercury used during Cannon's early years – before he'd settled down into the one-man soul jazz factory he later became – but it's also a great chance to hear Adderley working his horn in a style that doesn't show up much in later years. Hayman's orchestrations are less challenging than some of the Verve "with strings" sessions – but the overall work is solid, and the album's a dreamy mix of tracks like "I Cover The Waterfront", "Street Of Dreams", "You Are Too Beautiful", "Lonely Dreams", and "Two Sleepy People". ✨✧ Ohio PlayersPleasure ... LP
Westbound, 1972. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A true pleasure indeed – easily one of the greatest records ever by the Ohio Players, and a perfect summation of all things great in their groove! The album's a landmark effort – even for the heady days of the early 70s – as the Players manage to bring together a fair bit of jazz with their famous guitar-driven funk – all in a blend that's a lot more sophisticated than most other funk combos of the time, from the rhythms at the bottom to the instrumentation on the top! There's a darkness here that's undeniable – but the album's also not just a head trip into the fuzziest reaches of the studio – as the jazzier inflections help illuminate the farthest corners, and really bring the whole album back to focus with a wonderfully redemptive groove! Psychedelic elements are still all over the place, but also used sparingly enough to be most effective – a brilliant balance that few groups of this type were ever able to muster. Titles include the classic "Funky Worm", with the wild moogy bit that's been sampled loads of times over the years by a gazillion hip hoppers – plus loads of other nice ones, like the slow bonking funker "Pride & Vanity", the wild "Walt's First Trip", and the groovy "Laid It" – as well as "Pleasure", "Paint Me", "Our Love Has Died", and "Walked Away From You".
