Ornette Coleman — Shape Of Jazz To Come (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Atlantic, 1959. New Copy (reissue).... $22.99 24.98
An album that certainly lives up to the promise of its title – as it's filled with amazing instrumentation, groundbreaking compositions, and a sound in jazz that few ears could imagine at the time! The groove here is extremely modal – all instruments rolling along on the same rhythmic pulse, with drums, bass, trumpet, and alto sax incredibly intertwined! Ornette's really got an edge on his instrument – cutting even more deeply here than the clipped, punctuated cornet work of Don Cherry – and the rhythm team of Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins are simply amazing – not just keeping up with the energy of Ornette, but also really helping facilitate it as well! Titles include the haunting "Lonely Woman", plus "Peace", "Chronology", and "Focus on Sanity".
(Incredible reissue! This one's got a Japanese-style heavy cover, beautifully-cut vinyl, and a level of packaging that's amazing!)

Konono No 1 — Congotronics ... CD
Crammed (Belgium), 2004. New Copy .... $14.99 16.98
A group with a sound like no other – one that features home-made electronics and amplification, and an array of highly-percussive instrumentation that includes thumb pianos, megaphones, microphones, and old car parts! Konono's been making this music for the past 25 years – working in the suburbs of Kinshasa as a collective of musicians experimenting with the relation of sound and rhythm – using a fair bit of distortion to push the boundaries of their style. There's a unique relationship here between traditional African rhythms and newer electronic music – almost a primitive electronica, if you will – but with a style that goes way beyond such a facile tag. Titles include "Paradiso", "Mama Liza", "Kule Kule", "Lufuala Ndonga", and "Masikulu".

Pretty Things/Phillippe Debarge — Philippe Debarge ... CD
Ugly Things, 1969. New Copy .... $12.99
A strange, yet worthy leftfield album by the Pretty Things – one that features unknown French singer and wealthy Pretty Things fan Phillip Debarge – who essentially commissioned the group to write and produced this grooving little record! The Pretty Things and Debarge recorded the set at Nova Studios – one of the earliest London facilities with the state of the art multi-tracking, circa '69 – but there's still a nicely rugged and raucous underbelly to the production that's just tripped out enough with mellotron, harpsichord and harmonies. The album never saw light of day before the good people at Ugly Things saw it through all these decades later – and it's a surprising treasure from the seminal years of the group! Includes "Hello, How Do You Do?", "You Might Even Say", "Peace", "Eagle's Son", "It'll Never Be Me", and "All Gone Now".

Ennio Morricone — L'Assoluto Naturale (with bonus tracks) ... CD
1969. New Copy .... Around April 15, 2013 (delayed)
An incredible soundtrack from Morricone's best period ever! The score has that totally sublime Morricone quality that you'll find on on a small handful of his best works – like La Donna Invible, Photo Prohibite, Le Casse, and Metti Una Sera A Cena – and it's filled with amazingly precise orchestral washes of sound, pierced by smaller solo instruments, tuned with strangely angular qualities. If you've ever wondered why people think Morricone's one of the 20th century's best composers – this is the kind of LP that will open your mind. It's incredibly complex, yet never too academic – and always extremely pleasant and lovely to listen to! We love this one to death and it's an honor to have it in stock! Titles include "L'Assoluto Naturale", "Sempre Piu Verita", "E Facile", "Il Profumo Della Tua Pelle", and "Sembaravi Desiderare".

new El Gran Combo — Maldito Callo ... CD
Gema/Combo, 1966. New Copy .... $11.99 13.99 Out Of Stock
A mid-60s burner from El Gran Combo – a great little set from the time when the group really started to cook! The tunes are all tight, bright, and right on the money – served up with some odd twists and turns in the group's use of saxes – played by Eddie Perez and Hector Santos – and in the production style, which throws in a nice bit of echo at points. Rhythms are pretty lively throughout, and vocals are by the classic pair of Pellin Rodriguez and Andy Montanez – on titles that include "Mi Compay", "Senor Tata", "Son Facilito", "El Negro Bembe", "Para Ti", "No Bailes Con Manuel", and "Sin Tu Querer".
