✨✧ Erik TruffazSaloua ... CD
Blue Note (France), 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An enigmatic chapter in the always-compelling career of trumpeter Erik Truffaz – one that has him bringing in some distinct Mid East influences, in the form of vocalists Nya and Mournir Troudi! The core group's a quartet, with Truffaz playing in his usual moody trumpet style, as well as a bit of melodica – backed by a bit of electronics, guitar, and percussion. The vocalists sing on about half the album's tracks, giving them lyrics of a strongly political nature – and creating a mood that really makes these tunes stand out from the others on the LP. A few of the instrumentals get a bit guitar-heavy for our taste, but the vocal numbers are great – and tracks include "Saloua", "Ines", "Tantrik", "Big Wheel", "Whispering", "Yabous", "Ghost Drummer", and "Et La Vie Continue". ✨✧ Erik TruffazMask ... CD
Blue Note, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer batch of tracks from this young Swiss trumpeter – with a sound and style that recalls the best spacey jazz funk moments of the 70s! This is an all-instrumental US Blue Note release that combines the instrumental tracks from Truffaz's French Blue Note albums Bending New Corners and The Dawn, plus a few that appear to be instrumental remixes of tunes that originally contained a rapper. Truffaz is one of our favorite new talents – and he's got a sound that's a mix of Eddie Henderson and electric Miles Davis, and the records feature some excellent Fender Rhodes work backing him up. Titles include "The Dawn", "Bending New Corners", "Betty", "And", "The Mask", and "Arroyo". CD

Bugge WesseltoftSomewhere In Between ... CD
Jazzland (Norway), Late 1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. Used 2CD ... $16.99
A fantastic package of music that celebrates the 20 years of recording by Bugge Wesseltoft – easily one of the most compelling musical figures to emerge at the end of the 20th Century! Years back, we stocked Bugge in our New Grooves section, as he had a bit of a clubby electronic vibe – but over the years, he turned out to be not only a hell of a jazz musician, but also a budding minimalist too – a talent who completely transformed his sound, and also touched a generation of contemporaries with his strong sense of collaboration and musical stewardship! This package really showcases that legacy – and features work by artists who include Joshua Redman, Mari Boine, Erik Truffaz, Joaquin Claussell, Hakon Kornstad, Sidsel Endressen, and others – although the main focus is always Bugge's music at the core, and his incredible sense of sound and timing. The set features some old and out of print tracks, but also includes some new versions of older compositions, and a few unreleased tracks as well – making the whole thing way more than just a compilation, and instead another important addition to Bugge's catalog. Titles include "Sender", "Turner", "Breed It", "Mamullah", "You Might Say (new version)", "Yellow Is The Color", "Somewhere In Between", "Existence (new version)", "Hope (new version)", "Wy (new version)", "Kammermusik", "Den Fyrste Songen, "Try Out Here In There", and "Yoyk (new version)". ✨✧ Wallace RoneyPrototype ... CD
High Note, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nicely electrified set from trumpeter Wallace Roney – working here in a style that has plenty of moody backdrops on Fender Rhodes, plus some really snapping percussion from drummer Eric Allen! There's a sound here that's clearly inspired by 70s Miles, but which also moves through a range of more recent expression, and which often reminds us of work from French trumpeter Erik Truffaz on his first few Blue Note albums. Some of the tracks are more acoustic and straightforward, in the manner of Roney's earlier albums – and players include Adam Holzman on Fender Rhodes, Geri Allen on acoustic keys, Antoine Roney on tenor and soprano saxes, and Matt Garrison on bass. Guest performers include Don Byron on bass clarinet, Clifton Anderson on trombone, and DJ Logic on turntables – and titles include "Cyberspace", "Shadow Dance", "Prototype", "Then & Now", "Secret Identity", and "Three Views Of The Blues". ✨✧ VariousBlue Note Revisited ... LP
Blue Note, 2004. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A dream come true! Someone at Blue Note is keeping their eyes and ears on the street and in the clubs – because here's another late model conceptual triumph – a remix project pairing current innovators in the club and hip hop underground with classic numbers from the label's vaults! The concept is simple; classic numbers are given to handpicked remixers, re-doers, and stylistic misfits best suited to re-work that particular number. Mo Wax maestros La Funk Mob open the set with a mellow, club soul tweak of Wayne Shorter's "Oriental Funk Song". Kenny Dope trips out Bobby Hutcherson's "La Malanga" into a bubbly club funk jam. "Kyoto Jazz Massive" completely re-work Eddie Henderson's "Kudu" into a wonderful number all their own. Perhaps the biggest triumph of all here is the consistency throughout; every artist attached brings their A-game (how could they do any less, given a chance to add their own elements to the some of the most influential numbers they could get their hands on?) Amazing, amazing stuff – whether it's the scratched up, hip hop flavor J Dilla brings to Jack McDuff's "Oblighetto" or the righteous electronic groove Jazzanova drops on Eddie Gale's "Song Of The Will", the minimalist, keys and beats drive Osunlade brings into Grant Green's "A Time To Remember". Every track sparkles! Other tracks include DJ Spinna/Donald Byrd "Lansanna's Priestess", 4 Hero/Horace Silver "Won't You Open Up Your Senses", DJ Cam & Erik Truffaz/Donald Byrd "The Emperor", Herbert/Michel Petrucciani "Caravan" and more!
