new Tease — Tease (Epic) ... CD
Epic/FTG, 1986. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lean, mid 80s pop soul and funk from Tease – funky and nicely thumping work from a group that features singer and songwriter Kipper Jones! Kipper would go on to bigger and brighter prospects as a hit songwriter for other artists, but, both of Tease's self-titled sets in the 80s – this one for Epic, and an earlier effort for RCA – are both unjustly slept and and stand up pretty strongly with better remembered R&B albums from the period. Some of the album reminds us of the funkier pop soul sounds coming out of Minneapolis in the mid 80s, though Tease came together from the west coast scene at the time – with beats, keys, synth, bass and soulful vocals driving it. Nice stuff that's well worth checking out! Includes "The Note", "Better Wild (Than Mild)", "Firestarter", "Body Heat", "Total Control", "Soft Music", "Baby Be Mine" and "I Wish You Were Here".

Hank Crawford — Wildflower ... CD
CTI/Epic, 1973. Used .... $7.99
A sweet bit of electric funk, and one of Hank Crawford's greatest records from the time! Thanks is due in a large part to Bob James – who arranged and produced the set with a smooth CTI/Kudu groove, leaving Hank to solo over the top in dreamy soulful riffs. The groove is really great – and the record gets surprisingly chunky in parts – with heavier rhythms than you might expect from a Crawford album from the time! Includes great versions of "You've Got It Bad Girl" and "Corazon", plus the tracks "Good Morning Heartache" and "Wildflower".

new Michael Jackson — Bad ... CD
Epic, 1987. Used .... $4.99
The third great album in the trilogy that includes Off The Wall and Thriller – and a set that still has Michael Jackson running strong at the height of his solo powers! Quincy Jones is still at the helm, and Michael more than proves that he can still come up with a pop tune without going too far over the top – catchy, compelling numbers that played well all over the world of pop – but which still hang onto just a little part of his soul roots too! That balance is a key factor to the success of this set – a record that helped re-ignite interest in Jackson's music, and introduce him to a whole new generation – while still keeping most of the older fans plenty pleased too. Titles include "Just Good Friends", "Smooth Criminal", "Bad", "Another Part Of Me", "Man In The Mirror", and "Speed Demon".

new Michael Jackson — Dangerous ... CD
Epic, 1991. Used .... $3.99
One of those records that we remember dismissing at the time – but honestly, it really lives up to repeated listenings in later years! Sure, Michael Jackson's no longer working with Quincy Jones – and instead goes for Teddy Riley and some other (then) contemporary producers – but that all makes for a very solid 90s crossover vibe – perfect for radio play a the time, not to mention heavy video rotation too – and definitely still another jewel in the crown of the King of Pop! Titles include "Remember The Time", "Why You Wanna Trip On Me", "In The Closet", "Jam", "Dangerous", "Gone Too Soon", "Will You Be There", "Black Or White", "She Drives Me Wild", and "Can't Let Her Get Away".

new Michael Jackson — History – Past, Present & Future Book 1 ... CD
Epic, 1980s/1995. Used 2CD .... $7.99
Well, it's HIS story, actually – a bit overblown in concept, and probably execution – but a record that's got some nice nuggets underneath, if you know where to look. The first half is the backstory – gems from Michael's earlier years on Epic – including "Remember The Time", "The Girl Is Mine", "Bad", "Rock With You", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "She's Out Of My Life", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", and "Wanna Be Startin Something". The second half is "HIStory Continues" – newer material that might have made a decent album on its own, but which probably pales slightly in comparison with the classics. Tracks include the "Scream" duet with Janet – plus "You Are Not Alone", "Childhood", "2 Bad", "Tabloid Junkie", "This Time Around", "Come Together", and "They Don't Care About Us".

Jill Scott — Who Is Jill Scott? ... CD
Epic/Hidden Beach, 2000. Used .... $3.99
Get ready to discover a fantastic new soul music talent! Jill Scott's the best thing we've heard in years – and she's a perfect example of the killer NuSoul trends that have been forged in the past few years by artists like D'Angelo, Mshell N'degocello, or N'Dambe (but Jill doesn't have an apostrophe mark in her name!) The record's a totally seductive blend of warm instrumentation, subdued funky beats, and immensely captivating soul vocals. The whole thing's awash in Fender Rhodes, giving it a spacey soul sound that will make the record a classic for years to come! Titles include "The Way", "Do You Remember", "Long Rain", "Love Rain", "Honey Molasses", "Slowly Surely", "Watching Me", and "He Loves Me" – but it's allllll good!

Horace Silver — Silver's Blue ... CD
Epic/Columbia (France), 1956. Used .... $11.99
Killer early work from Horace Silver – and a rare non-Blue Note session from the 50s! The album's Horace's only date for Columbia, and it's got a feel that's similar to some of the Jazz Messengers' hardbop recordings for the label at the time – cooking with a soulful intensity at the bottom, yet taking off with some tremendously well-carved solos on the top! The group's an all-star ensemble that includes some of the best harbop players of the time – Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Donald Byrd and Joe Gordon on trumpet, Doug Watkins on bass, and Kenny Clarke and Art Taylor on drums – all grooving together with Horace as if they'd been backing him up for years. Titles include great originals "Silver's Beat", "Shoutin' Out", and "Hank's Tune – plus versions of "I'll Know" and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes".

Jaco Pastorius — Jaco Pastorius (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic, 1976. Used .... $3.99 Just Sold Out!
This is the one that really nailed it for Jaco Pastorious – a brilliant showcase for all his many talents on the bass, and a key illustration of the way that he influenced an entire generation! Sure, Jaco in Weather Report was already pretty darn great – but here, on his own, he really gets to sparkle – jamming hard with heavyweights on some funky numbers, sliding out in spacey territory on mellow cuts, and even trying out a few more experimental moments that are far beyond what most other bassists might imagine for a debut of this nature. Players on the date include Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Don Alias on percussion, Lenny White on drums, Hubert Laws on flute, and Randy Brecker on trumpet – and titles include "Portrait Of Tracy", "Donna Lee", "Continuum", "Okonkole Y Trompa", "Kuru/Speak Like a Child", "Opus Pocus", and "Come On Come Over". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Used To Be A Cha Cha" and "6/4 Jam".

new Chase — Chase/Ennea/Pure Music ... CD
Epic/Wounded Bird, 1971/1972/1974. Used 2CD .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A trio of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". Pure Music is the third album from the mighty Chase – and proof that the group was still going strong even after their groundbreaking debut! The grooves here are almost tighter than before – a bit more complicated instrumentally, with some of the trumpets backed off a bit, to leave more room for great lines on guitar and keyboards. There's still some vocals on the record, but they seem a bit more on the backburner than before – and titles include "Close Up Tight", "Twinkles", "Weird Song #1", "Run Back To Mama", and "Bochawa".

new Michael Jackson — Thriller ... CD
Epic, 1982. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Arguably the last true moment of genius in Michael Jackson's career – a record that sold a bazillion copies around the world – and for plenty good reason! Michael's still working here with Quincy Jones – in territory that steps nicely from the Off The Wall groove, into territory that's somewhat more poppy, but still quite soulful overall. And yes, the success of the album meant that cuts like "Billie Jean", "Thriller", and "Beat It" got plenty of play – thanks to both heavy radio and video rotation – but a few decades later, there's still a tremendous amount of depth here – on great cuts like "Human Nature", "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin", and "PYT" – which all hold up nicely!

new Alphonso Johnson — Yesterday's Dreams ... CD
Epic/Wounded Bird, 1976. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer all-star session of funky fusion tracks – with a nice tight sound produced by Skip Drinkwater! Yesterday's Dreams differs a little from Alphonso's other strong mid 70s efforts in that it's not as spacey as a whole – but the rubbery, cleanly funky grooves are just as strong – and the record as a whole makes for more of a showcase for his excellent group of players! Bassist Johnson leads the session, but there's a huge amount of guests, such as Grover Washington, Patrice Rushen, Mike Clark, and Sheila Escovedo. Plus, Jon Lucien, Diane Reeves, Flora Purim, and Phillip Bailey all sing on the record! Titles include "One To One", "As Little As You", "Scapegoat", "Show Us The Way", "Tales Of Barcelona", and the future soul classic "Love's The Way I Feel 'Bout Cha".

new Sade — Love Deluxe ... CD
Epic, 1992. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sade's last LP from the early 90s before she went into her brief recording and performing hiatus. Like the preceding records, the approach is heavy on the jazz side of things, with a crisp, spare touch on the production and a wonderfully soulful feel to the songwriting. At this point she no longer had to work to break into the charts, but that didn't stop her and her band from coming up with a great batch of material that managed to be easily accessible without losing any of the sublime grace that set her apart. Includes "No Ordinary Love", "Cherish The Day", "Feel No Pain", "I Couldn't Love You More", "Like A Tattoo", "Kiss Of Life", "Pearls", "Bullet Proof Soul" and "Mermaid".

new Barry Goldberg Blues Band — Blowing My Mind ... CD
Epic, 1968. Used .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
A super rare electric blues-rock LP, recorded for Epic sometime in the late 60s! Organ and keyboard pounder Barry Goldberg jokingly dubbed his style "Jew Blues" – and it's really that kind of playful spirit that really kind of makes frenetic LP a minor gem, and well worth whatever effort it took to dig this out of Epic's expansive vaults. Goldberg's rough, barking vocals kind of give it strong garage rock feel, too – albeit with the rock-solid backing of session titans Charlie Musselwhite on blues harp, Chicago powerhouse Harvey Mandel and Roy Ruby on guitar, and wild Chicago drummer Maurice McKinley on the kit. Tracks include "Getting' It Down", "Mean Old World", "Twice A Man", "Big Boss Man", "Blowing My Mind", "Put Me Down", "That'll Be The Day", "Can't Stand To See You Go" and more.

new Michael Jackson — Off The Wall (special edition) ... CD
Epic/Legacy, 1979. Used .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
Michael, if only you'd stayed at this level! This 1979 solo album by Michael is a killer batch of soul grooves – one of best moments ever, and a crowning cap to a stellar 70s run – both as a younger solo act, and with the whole Jackson family! Quincy Jones produced, and the album's got a funky undercurrent that's really stunning – clubby, yet plenty darn soulful, with a wickedly sly groove that others would try to copy for years, but never fully match. Titles include seminal groovers like "Rock With You", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", "Working Day And Night", "Girlfriend", "Off The Wall", "Burn This Disco Out" and more. Amazing amazing amazing work from the to-be-coronated King Of Pop! CD features some cool bonus tracks – voice-overs from Quincy Jones, plus interview bits, and demos of "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" and "Workin Day & Night".

new Jacksons — Victory ... CD
Epic, 1984. Used .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
Michael Jackson's last album with his famous family – a set of electric 80s soul that's a bit different than Jackson's well-known solo work! In a way, the later Jacksons albums almost feel like a place where Michael can try out some ideas that don't fit as tightly into the overall sound of his own records – and there's definitely more diversity here than before – a shift between gentle ballads, beat-heavy tunes, and even a few rockish/poppish moments. Of course, we should probably be crediting the other Jacksons for their help in the sound here too – as they're certainly credited on the cover – but there's also less of the "many parts as one" sound than before, so it's hard to tell how they're working together. Titles include "The Hurt", "Wait", "Torture", "One More Chance", "Body", "We Can Change The World", and "State Of Shock", the big single, which features a guest appearance by Mick Jagger.

new Prince — Sign O The Times ... CD
Paisley Park/Warner, 1987. Used 2CD .... $7.99
A sprawling classic from Prince – that tracks that perfect the pop, funk & soul kaleidoscope of his best 80s jams, and adding a remarkable, previously unexplored depth and breadth of styles! A lot of folks tried to designate Prince's massive, fearless, beginning-of-the-end-of-the-80s epic Sign O The Times his What's Going On – which was never really fair to Prince, or to Marvin Gaye for the matter – but it's filled with great cuts – including the minimalist funky groover of a title track, with its superficial social consciousness that's very much of its 80s era, and all the more fascinating for that – plus massive hit "U Got The Look", "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man", "The Cross", "Hot Thing", and "Starfish & Coffee". 17 tracks in all.

Dust To Digital, 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. Used 4CDs .... $84.99
Beautiful field recordings of American folk, blues, gospel, and more – the epic, truly wonderful Art Of Field Recording Vol 2 – collected by Art Rosenbaum in the Harry Smith tradition! It's impossible to get around the Harry Smith comparison for a box of treasures like this, but it's especially apt, given that must be one of the best of it's kind since the 90s reissues of Smith's Anthology Of American Folk Music. Rosenbaum has been recording traditional music from the south and around the US for half century himself – and Volume 2 if what we can only hope will be an ongoing series captures spirituals, gospel, blues, bluegrass, fiddle tunes, vocal tunes, guitar tunes, lonely homespun balladry, and lots more – much of it from the 60s, 70s & 80s and some earlier and more recent recordings. It couldn't be more exciting that the traditions of non-professional, home based American folk music have survived all this time, and it's just as wonderful that Rosenbaum has been there to document it. More than 100 songs on 4 CDs, with a thick, beautiful, well researched and illustrated book – with notes on each of the tracks, and tons of photographs. Essential!!!

Tompkins Square, 1910s/1920s/1930s. Used 3CD .... $24.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing music from the depths of the Great Depression, but it's hardly a downer – this is a deeply felt collection of tunes by black & white singers and combos of the 20s & 30s that's cathartic, emotional, and a complete treasure trove! The songs are full of brutal beauty, tragedy, and some dark humor, especially when it gets to the murder ballads – and more than 30 of the 70 songs haven't been reissued before now! This is simply one of the very best box sets of archival Americana since the epic CD releases of the Anthology Of American Folk Music. It's really that good! 70 tracks on 3CDs, crafted by Susan Archie, Hank Sapoznik and Christopher King, with a gorgeous 52-page booklet, and an introduced by an obviously indebted Tom Waits. The CDs separate the material thematically – Man V Machine, Man V Nature, and Man V Man (And Woman, Too) – and titles include "Titanic Blues" by Hi Henry Brown & Charlie Jordan, "The Crash Of The Akron" by Bob Miller, "Wreck Of Old 97" by Skillet Lickers, "The Fatal Wreck Of The Blus" bu Mainer's Mountaineers, "The Story Of The Mighty Mississippi" by Ernest Stoneman, "When The Levee Breaks" by Kansas Joe & Memphis Minnie, "The Death Of Floyd Collins" by Vernon Dalhart, "Peddler And His Wife" by Hayes Shepherd, "Frankie" by Dykes Magic City Trio, "Dupree Blues" by Willie Walker.

Impulse, 1965. Used 2CDs .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
A long overdue testament to the live genius of the mighty John Coltrane Quartet – captured at the legendary Half Note club in NYC – disc 1 recorded on a date in March 1965 and disc 2 on a date in early May of the same year! The set finds Coltrane plus McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on the kit working in a far more adventurous guise than many of the 60s studio sessions – stretching out incredibly on the half hour epic workout "One Up, One Down" and a beautifully loose run of "Afro Blue". The stylistic themes are carried through similarly on the second disc's long grooving "Song Of Praise" and an amazing "My Favorite Things", but stretching near or past the 20 minute mark. These long bootlegged recordings are now available on CD officially for the first time ever – complete with the original radio introductions and announcements!
(Digipack has some light wear.)

new Miles Davis — Get Up With It (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 1974. Used 2CD Gatefold .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Miles Davis' last studio session before a few years of seclusion – and a really monumental effort, probably the baddest of the electric period! The album does a great job of capturing the energy of the frenzied live sets from that time, and matching it with Teo Macero's cut and paste editing, and wizardry at the mixing console. The side long piece "He Loved Him Madly" is a minimalist epic, while "Calypso Frelimo" alternates between mad afro-percussion driven jams and spacey wah-wah trumpet interludes. The rest of the album is divided up into more succinct shorter funky pieces, like classic "Rated X", with Miles basically just leaning on an electric organ over a hyper funk beat, and the bluesy "Honky Tonk" which opens with an incredibly funky burping electric piano break!

new Swell Maps — Jane From Occupied Europe (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mute (UK), 1980. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
Even more experimental than the first album from The Swell Maps – a set that features some longer songs and a bit more tunes, but also a lot more weird sounds as well! Instrumentation is often slightly more conventional here, but usually taken to some very unusual places – odd tones and phrases that really mark the Maps as a key link between pre and post-punk sides of the British scene – and which give this record a timeless quality that's kept it essential for years! Epic Soundtracks serves up loads of cool instruments along with his drums – including some toys, violin, typewriter, and even a bit of mumbling – and Nikki Sudden drives the whole thing home with his droney guitar and great vocals. Titles include "Let's Buy A Bridge", "Robot Factory", "Big Maz In The Desert From The Trolley", "Mining Villages", "Collision With A Frogman Vs The Mangrove Delta Plan", "Whatever Happens Next", and "The Helicopter Spies".
Also available: Jane From Occupied Europe (with download) ... LP $14.99
