Chris McGregorIn His Good Time (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Amazing sounds from the legendary Chris McGregor – a rare set of solo piano performances that shows a whole new side of his genius! The music here is still steeped in South African roots, yet has a style that's a bit more personal and intimate than some of Chris' better-known recordings with The Brotherhood Of Breath, or The Blue Notes – as McGregor here has to carry all the weight on his own – and does a tremendous job of spinning out these haunting melodies on piano – usually with a rhythmic pulse that's as compelling as the tune! The style's got echoes of previous Afro-inspired piano jazz from Randy Weston or Dollar Brand – but there's a deftness, and sense of feeling here that's completely McGregor's own – a really compelling quality that holds us rapt in ways that few other solo piano sets might do. This CD brings together lots more material than was on the original LP release – over 70s minutes of music, with tracks that include "Call", "Raincloud", "Umhome", "Mngqusho", "The Bride", "In His Good Time", "Ududu Nombambula", "Kwa Tebugo", and "Green Hymn". Harold Mabern with Gregory Porter & Kurt EllingAfro Blue ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
The great Harold Mabern kicks it hard with a key core group – then finds a way to open up with some surprise guest artists as well – including singers Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, and Norah Jones! The core of the album features Mabern's piano rocketing out with rhythm from John Webber on bass and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and getting some strong tenor work from the mighty Eric Alexander – and as the set goes on, the group also brings in Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Steve Turre on trombone. But the key force here is the singers – especially Porter and Elling, who seem to find an old school space with the group that really takes them back to their roots. Elling sings on "You Needed Me", "Portrait Of Jennie", and "Billie's Bounce"'; Porter sings on "Afro Blue" and "The Man From Hyde Park"; Monheit sings on "I'll Take Romance" and "My One & Only Love"; and Norah Jones sings on "Don't Misunderstand" and "Fools Rush In". CD also features Alexis Cole on "Such Is Life" – and the instrumental tracks "The Chief", "Mozzin", and "Bobby Benny Jymie Lee Bu". CD

✨✧ Charlie Mariano/Gregor Josephs QuartetLustinseln ... CD
L+R Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1995. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the more swinging later albums from reedman Charlie Mariano, but a set that's still got that special sort of edge he developed in his music from the 70s onwards – a record that has Charlie blowing both alto and soprano sax, in a quartet co-led with pianist Gregor Josephs! The rest of the group features Werner Lauscher on bass and Marc Lehan on drums – both players with a nicely angular approach to rhythm, which creates these nicely chunky passages that have Mariano soloing in a more angular mode – while Josephs rolls through with more soulful vibes that are often bridging things in the rhythms. Titles include "Stachel", "Fur Martina", "Milonga", "Mit Leichtigkeit", "Rufender", and "Jetzt". CD

Guillermo Gregorio2 Trios ... CD
ESP, 2023. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
The title's no lie, as reedman Guillermo Gregorio plays here in two different trios – each of whom get space in different halves of the set! The first half features Gregorio on clarinet next to some very cool vibes from Carrie Biolo, and cello from Fred Lonberg-Holm – a lineup that has this amazing sense of sound, especially when the vibes ring out with a more dynamic cascading energy than the clarinet and cello – as if both of the other players have given Biolo plenty of space to shine on her own! The second trio features cello as well – played by Nicholas Jozwiak – next to Gregorio's work on standard clarinet, and Ivan Barenboim on contralto clarinet. The tunes from that group have a very strong focus on interplay between the two clarinets – fluttering around, almost as birds in the sky – while the cello provides a nice grounding. Titles include "Tres", "Cosa Rara", "Degrees Of Iconicity", "Fourth Piece", "NPA", and "Out Of The Other Notes". CD

Emanuel HarroldWe Da People ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
Drummer Emanuel Harrold is way more than just a musician on the set – and the record is way more than jazz as well – as Emanuel works with some great guests throughout, and turns the whole thing into a record that's more like some soul-styled soundsystem overall! There's definitely plenty of jazzy moments on the set – nice work on flute, alto, Fender Rhodes, and guitar – but the singers who appear on different cuts really help shape the sound of the record in great ways – given a lot of freedom by Harrold to do their things, at a level that's very different than just a vocalist joining in on a jazz session. Gregory Porter gives us one of his best songs in years – the wonderful "I Think" – and singers on other cuts include Shareef Keyes on "See", Crystal Ransom on "Brighter Day", Saunders Sermons on "Good Word", and Malcolm Jamal Warner on "We Da People" – and other cuts include "Shine Light" and "Fight Harder" – the last of which features trumpet from Keyon Harrold. Freddie McGregorBobby Bobylon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Studio One, 1979. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A key moment in the career of the legendary Freddie McGregor – easily one of the best-known voices in reggae in the post-Marley years! The set captures Freddie at his youthful best – coming off of time doing vocal group work, but really shining strongly as a lead singer on his own – getting this nicely subtle Studio One backing that are heavy on the roots vibe, which makes a nicely deep rhythmic contrast to the sweetly crackling vocals of McGregor! The set came out at the start of the 80s, but it's got an instant classic vibe that resonates almost more strongly with some of the most soulful Jamaican recordings at the end of the 60s. Titles include "Bandulo", "We Need More Love", "What Difference Does It Make", "Go Away Pretty Girl", "Tomorrow Is Like Today", "Bobby Bobylon", "Wine Of Violence", "Gonna Take Over Now", "Rastaman Camp", and "I Am A Revolutionist". CD features 8 bonus tracks – including "Come Now Sister (ext mix)", "Freddie", "Homeward Bound", "Little Girl", "When I'm Ready (ext version)", "Rastaman Camp (ext mix)", and "I Man A Rasta (orig 7" mix)". ✨✧ Roscoe Mitchell & Montreal/Toronto Art OrchestraRide The Wind ... CD
Nessa, 2018. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The headier side of the great Roscoe Mitchell – a project that has some of the reedman's compositions transcribed for larger orchestra performance – but at a level that seems to be a natural evolution of the notion of "black classical music" that Mitchell first helped pioneer with the AACM! Make no mistake with that term – this isn't classical music at all – instead, the larger group works here to realize this beautiful balance between improvisation and composition, almost working as a whole to embody the ideas that Mitchell has brought to his music in much smaller settings, carved out of a large group of woodwinds, a touch of brass, and a bit of strings. Gregory Oh conducts the group, and titles include "They Rode For Them", "Splatter", "Nonaah", "Shards & Lemons", and "Ride The Wind". CD

✨✧ OregonIn Performance ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A double-length live set from Oregon – one that acts as a nice bracket to their 70s work for the Vanguard label, and which maybe points the way towards the direction they'd soon take at ECM! As some of their contemporaries were maybe getting even more electric, the group deliver a fantastic acoustic set throughout – guitars from Ralph Towner, who also plays piano and a bit of French horn – plus sitar and tabla from Collin Walcott, bass and violin from Glen Moore, and a mix of saxes, flute, and other reeds from Paul McCandless! The sound is nice and open – maybe more spacious and patient than the group's earlier work – really opening up on the longer live tracks on the set. Titles include "Arion", "Waterwheel", "Buzzbox", "Along The Way", "Wanderlust", "Icarus", "Free Piece", and "Deer Path". CD

Blue Note, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The magnificent voice of Gregory Porter is a wonderful fit for the Holiday season – full of feeling, and coming across with a sense of honest, human emotion that really makes the music come alive! Gregory's definitely in more of the soul side of his spectrum than the jazz of his roots – but he delivers things with a mature, sophisticated vibe that's balanced nicely between the two at most moments – with a sense of care that makes most of the album resonate with Christmas classics from artists like Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers, and Luther! Titles include the great "Everything's Not Lost", plus "Purple Snowflakes", "Christmas Waltz", "Someday At Christmas", "Christmas Wish", "Do You Hear What I Hear", and "Heart For Christmas". CD

✨✧ Nostalgia 77Loneliest Flower In The Village ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest music we've heard so far from Nostalgia 77 – a group who started many years back as a jazz-referenced project – but one who here are definitely a fully-fledged combo with a very spiritual vibe! As before, producer Benedic Lamdin is at the helm of the lineup – yet the production is minimal, and instead the whole thing has this instrumental flowering of group members in ways that really fit the spirit of music by Dollar Brand, Chris McGregor, and Sun Ra – who are all covered on the set alongside the group's own original compositions too! The horn work is especially wonderful – a blend of flute from Gareth Lockrane, tenor from James Allsop, and trumpet from Alex Bonney – held down by bass from longtime 77 stalwart Riaan Vosloo on bass, plus Tim Giles on drums, and Ross Stanley on piano and organ. Titles include "Dakar", "Ishmael", "The Sun Is Big", "Love In Outer Space", "Flower", and "The Hooper". CD

✨✧ PipelinePipeline ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2000. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The long-overdue issue of the only recording by this lost Chicago/Swedish project – a massive lineup of young avant players from the start of the millenium – similar in construction to the Peter Brotzman Tentet, but working here with a very different sound! The group came together over the space of months, on both sides of the Atlantic – and really took their time to develop the album's two long compositions by Ken Vandermark and Fredrik Ljungkvist – working in amazing shades and tones that really reflect the individual personalities and strengths of the 16-member lineup. Each track spins out towards the half-hour mark – which allows lots of space for sounds from Mats Gustafsson on tenor, Ken Vandermark on clarinet and tenor, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, clarinet, and baritone (were these guys having a competition?) – plus Guillermo Gregorio on alto and clarinet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Per Ake Holmlander on tuba, Joe Morris and David Stackenas on guitars, Sten Sandell on piano, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Kent Kessler and Johan Berthling on basses, Michale Zerang and Raymond Strid on drums and percussion, and Kjell Nordeson on drums, percussion, and vibes. There's a heck of a lot going on here – and titles include "Codeine Picasso" and "In This Very Room" – each of which have a mix of composition and improvisation that's not unlike some of the projects directed by Lonberg-Holm around the same time. ✨✧ Mike DogliottiCandombe For Export/Candombe Liso & Extras – The Complete Sondor Recordings ... CD
Sondor/Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Very groovy organ work from the amazing Mike Dogliotti – a player with a wonderful sense of whimsy and rhythm, heard here in a key collection of jazzy groovers – tracks that are almost the Argentine answer to Walter Wanderley's classic bossa sides from the 60s! The styles here are all quite lively – with a fair bit of heavy percussion underneath Mike's lightning-fast work on the keys – organ lines that move way faster even than Wanderley's best, and which show a similarly fluid approach! And in case you're worried that you've never heard of Dogliotti before, don't worry – because the package features a whopping 27 tracks in all, including 2 complete albums' worth of music, plus bonus tracks – more than enough to help you catch up on listening! Titles include "Don Pascual", "Candela", "Dona Gregoria", "Las Mazanas", "Siga El Baile", "Tierra", "Biricunyamba", "Ahi Va La Camparsa", "Chiquilada", "Biafra", "El Candomble", and "Palo Y Tamboril". Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad with Joao DonatoJoao Donato – Jazz Is Dead 7 ... CD
Jazz Is Dead, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
A really great entry in this excellent series – one that not only features lots of great Fender Rhodes from Brazilian jazz legend Joao Donato, but also vocals from Loren Oden on almost every track – which makes the whole thing feel like a fantastic hybrid of Joao's genius with a righteous approach to spacey soul! Oden sounds maybe even better here than ever before – singing jazzily, and drifting in and out of the instrumentation – which often has a more dynamic lead in the mix, with lots of work on a variety of instruments from Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad – upbeat, but just a few shades short of funk, which works perfectly for the way that Donato slides his Rhodes in and out of the tunes. Titles include "Forever More", "Sua Beleza E Beleza", "Desejo De Amor", "Aquarius", "Nao Negue Seu Coracao", "Liaisons", and "Adrian Ali & Gregory". CD

Smoke Sessions, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
Wayne Escoffery has some great guests on this record – but honestly, the work at the core is more than great enough on its own – as Escoffery has a way of blowing beautifully alongside the piano and Rhodes of David Kikoski, bass of Ugonna Okegwo, and drums of Mark Whitfield Jr – a wonderfully soulful group who seem to push his tenor into these bold, snakey lines that are completely seductive! Then, on key tracks the group's joined by guests – the vocals of Gregory Porter on a great version of "Rivers Of Babylon" and the track "My Truth", and appearances at other points from Tom Harrell on trumpet and Mike Moreno on guitar. Other titles include "Nostalgia In Times Square", "Sincerely Yours", "Dear John", and "Song Of Serenity". CD

✨✧ Various12 Bombazos Bailables ... CD
Discos Fuentes/Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A dozen heavy groovers from the legendary Discos Fuentes – pulled from a time when the Colombian label was really finding its sound and strengths – mixing together older strands of Afro Cuban inspiration with a special vibe that would soon make their scene rival the Latin music power of New York and Puerto Rico! The percussion is pretty darn heavy on most of these tracks – almost a fusion of the rootsier modes of early years with some of the more sophisticated musical elements developed in the small combo years of the New York 60s Latin scene – but also touched with some styles that are completely Colombian, yet still in a formative early moment that's never predictable or commercial at all. Titles include "Atiza Y Ataja" by Los Supremos, "El Vidriero" by Fruko Y Sus Tesos, "Coco May Ma" by Combo Las Vegas, "Cumbia En Do Menor" by Lita Barrientos, "Manue" by Michi Sarmiento Y Su Combo Bravo, "Cumbia Loca" by Conjunta Miramar, "Safari Safari" by Tita Duval Y El Nuevo Ritmo De Bobby Ray, and "La Pluma" by Peregoyo Y Su Combo Vacana. Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.99
One of the most obscure Trojan Records collections of the 70s – maybe in part because it looks more like an airline promotional album than it does a collection of rare reggae nuggets! Yet the set is definitely the latter – a Trojan LP that brings together earlier singles recorded by Alvin GG Ranglin at a time when he was a key tastemaker on the Kingston scene – work that's right in the cusp of rocksteady/early reggae work, from a time when Ranglin was really at the top of his game! Tracks include a mix of vocal and instrumentals, solo singers and groups – with titles that include "Joan" by The Tidals, "Marie Song" by Fitz Major, "Sitting On The Sidewalk" by Ansil Linkers, "I Need Your Love" by Gregory Isaacs, "The Same Folks" by Rainy Davis, "Atlantic One" by Ansel Collins, "Hurricane Fifi" by GG Allstars, "Musical Coma" by Ranking Magnum, "Sensuous Woman" by The Maytones, and "Open Up Your Door" by Freddie McKay. This great 2CD set adds in 32 bonus tracks, most on CD for the first time ever – with work from The Starlites, GG Allstars, Keith & Dennis, Meditations, U Roy, Maytones, Vince Powell, Glen Washington, Elpedo & The Marveltones, Austin Campbell, and others – all served up with the usual high quality Doctor Bird notes and production! A long-overdue second volume to the original Pirate's Choice collection from Studio One – which itself was a bit of a stab at Duke Reid and his Treasure Isle label! Legendary Jamaican producer Clement Dodd serves up a host of lost gems from the Studio One catalog – not hits, but some rare mixes and under-heard tracks – all presented in the kind of format that shows just how deep Dodd's reach was back in the day, and how deep the Studio One vaults are to be turning up greatness like this! Titles include "All The Way" by Willie Williams, "You Hold The Handle" by The Conquerors, "Chinese Beauty" by Lennie Hibbert, "Heart Breaker" by Cool Operator, "Jah Light" by Cedric Im Brooks, "Pirate's Choice" by Brentford Rockers, "Sweet Child" by Freddy McGregor, and "Black Is Black" by Freedom Singers. ✨✧ Blue NotesBlue Notes For Mongezi ... CD
Ogun (UK), 1975. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the most hard-burning performances ever recorded by this legendary South African jazz combo – a set dedicated to trumpeter Mongezi Feza, a key member of the group who'd passed away just a short time before the recording! The session was done in London, right after all four remaining members had come together for a memorial for Mongezi – and throughout the set, you can feel the raw emotion that's driving the performance – bold, freewheeling and very expressive sounds from the lineup of Dudu Pukwana on alto sax, Chris McGregor on piano, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – all players who pick up extra percussion and vocalize at points – almost in the tradition of the AACM, but more emotive too. The set features a double-length performance, titled "Blue Notes For Mongezi" – divided into four movements. CD

✨✧ Joshua RedmanCome What May ... CD
Nonesuch, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from tenorist Joshua Redman – an artist that many have been following for decades – but who, to us, really seems to be hitting a new level of genius in recent years! There's this understated confidence going on here – as if Redman no longer has anything to prove, and can just open up beautifully on the tenor – never breaking down too many barriers in jazz, but always blowing with this distinct sound that's very much his own – and which brings an edge to his well-written compositions on the record, which have a beautiful balance of color and rhythm. Pianist Aaron Goldberg is also fantastic – a very rhythmic player, but one who also leaves a lot of space between the notes – in ways that create this glow, or maybe a sense of waves of sound from his instrument – gently rocking the performance in this strong, yet subtle way. The rest of the quartet features Reuben Rogers on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums that are bold, but never overdone – and the set of all-original material includes "How We Do", "DGAF", "Stagger Beer", "Vast", "Circle Of Life", and "Come What May". ✨✧ Leonard King & The Soul MessengersLeonard King & The Soul Messengers – Historic Recordings 1964 to 1971 ... CD
Uuquipleu, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Very cool work from Leonard King & The Soul Messengers – a Detroit combo who really kick things up here with some great work from the clubs and a few rare studio recordings as well! King's a drummer, and gives the group a mighty solid sound from the start – and the whole group are equally comfortable in a soul instrumental mode as they are when letting loose with jazzier solos – a bit like the Jazz Crusaders on the LA scene of the mid 60s, but even groovier overall! Instrumentation shifts a bit throughout – depending on the lineups – and includes alto from Gregory King, cornet from Atiba King, trumpet from Jimmy Nash, and organ, electric harpsichord, and piano from George Roundtree. The range of material varies in a really great way – showing not just an evolution of King and his combo, but also the changing tastes of the Detroit scene at the end of the 60s – and there's also a few soul vocal numbers mixed in with the jazz instrumentals. Titles include "Delen 1967", "Voice Your Choice", "The Barracuda", "I've Been Saved", "Lily The Fox", "Cold Sweat", "Psychedelic Pi", "Bumpy's Lament", "Hang Up", "Spinning Around/It's Too Late", and a "Jackson Five Medley". ✨✧ Will & James RagarWill & James Ragar One (with bonus tracks) ... CD
No Mountain/BBE (UK), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record that's really out of time and place – a set that sounds nothing like most other material issued in 1980, and which also hardly shows any traces of the Louisiana roots of Will & James Ragar! Instead, the set's got this laidback style that's almost folk funk at times, especially the variant from the late 60s and early 70s – maybe a bit like the music of Alzo & Udine. Guitars are mostly acoustic, but warmed up in nicely smooth ways – not through commercial production, just by inflecting the proceedings with a knowledge of jazzier phrasing, which comes through in the vocals, piano, and occasional other instrumentation too. There's a warm, laidback approach to the record that's really beautiful – and titles include "As The Day Grows Tired", "My Shining Sun", "She's Laughter", "Melting Pot", "Needs", "Hidden Away", "Just A Wanderer", "Oregon", and "Parade". This reissue also adds in the bonus tracks "Forever" and "Bayou Paradise". CD

✨✧ VariousLovers Rock – The Soulful Sound Of Romantic Reggae (3CD set) ... CD
Trojan, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A great look at a really magical moment in Jamaican music – one in which the influence of the big UK audience was felt in styles back home – and also in which some shifting modes in American soul also helped create some new modes of expression! Lovers Rock is a mellower, gentler version of reggae than some of the roots rock or headier dub recordings of the 70s – going back to the soul that first inspired Jamaicans to make their own grooves back in the 60s – but with an updated style that has more mature, sophisticated modes coming into play – great vocals that go wonderfully with the slow-stepping and midtempo grooves of the tracks! Make no mistake, this is still reggae, but just with less politics and more interpersonal themes – well-collected here on titles that include "Caught You In A Lie" by Louisa Mark, "Can't Go Through With Life" by Marie Pierre, "I'm Still In Love With You" by Marcia Aitken, "Silly Games" by Janet Kay, "Dim The Light" by Winston Ready, "Someone Loves You Honey" by JC Lodge, "Money In My Pocket" by Dennis Brown, "Night Nurse" by Gregory Isaacs, "I'm So Sorry" by Carroll Thompson, "Ghetto Queen" by John Holt, "Key To The World" by Ruddy Thomas, "Love Has Found Its Way" by Dennis Brown, "Getting Crazy" by The In Crowd, and "When Push Comes To Shove" by Freddie McGregor. 3CD set features 60 tracks in all – a huge selection! Ariola/Big Pink (South Korea), 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A classic yet unusual take on the sound of post-folk vocals in the world of 70s pop – a set done by gentle-voiced Mary MacGregor, a singer who would have had much more acoustic support a decade before – yet who here has an unusual blend of AOR elements and more laidback modes, all surprisingly produced at Muscle Shoals! This isn't the usual Muscle Shoals set – no southern soul currents, just plenty of warm keyboard lines from Barry Beckett, who co-produced with Peter Yarrow – another talent here who is in different territory than usual. Beckett even plays a bit of moog, which sounds nice next to Mary's voice as she delivers tunes that include the classic "Torn Between Two Lovers", plus "Good Together", "This Girl", "Mama", "It's Too Soon", "The Lady I Am", "For A While", and "I Just Want To Love You". An album that has reedman Gregory Tardy opening up a whole new chapter in his music – blowing clarinet throughout the record, but with all the soulful depth of his work on tenor! In some ways, Tardy's using the instrument a bit like John Coltrane when he moved to soprano sax – a leaner, more fluid way of expressing himself – often over rhythms that have some modal currents that really let the instrument weave out these beautifully colorful lines! The rest of the group features Taber Gable on piano – a hell of a force who really grounds the proceedings and sets up the groove – plus Regina Carter on violin, Matthew Parrish on bass, and Alvester Garnett on drums. Seminal live work from this legendary group – a late 70s concert recorded in London, and one that shows just how much the Blue Notes had grown after leaving behind their South African scene! The combo is a quartet here – the mighty Chris McGregor on piano, Dudu Pukwana on alto, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums – playing in this mode that moves their earlier rhythmic progressions into much more freewheeling and spiritual territory – a showcase for some of the most striking work we've ever heard from Pukwana on record – at a level that marks him as still one of the most vibrant players on both the British and South African scenes of the decade. Everyone else is wonderful too, and the recording quality does some amazing things with the bass of Dyani – on titles that include "Ilizwi", "Abelusi", "Amadoda", "Nomsenge", "Ithi-Gqi", "Mhegebe", "Maje" and "We Nduna". An album that really lives up to its title – as the set bristles with upbeat, joyous energy throughout – in a fantastic criss-crossing of players from different global scenes, all cooking together in the cultural hotbed of 70s London! The record's got some echoes of the Brotherhood Of Breath work by Chris McGregor also issued by the Cadillac label – and also features ties to some of the musicians from the South African scene – but the group's also got a youthful energy that really makes the whole thing soar – fantastic bass from Ernest Mothle, killer piano from Frank Roberts, and tight drums from Keith Bailey – topped with trumpet from Jim Dvorak and alto from Chris Francis – both mighty nice players! Some tracks have a great pulsating groove – and titles include "PM", "Tribute", "Hidden Spirits", "Martini Suite", and "Spirals". CD

Resteamed (UK), 2011. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Don't let the title put you off, as these aren't tracks recorded at some soundcheck before a gig by British piano legend Stan Tracey – and instead, they're some incredible recordings from late in his career, showing the modernist to be every bit as vibrant as back in the day! CD1 features duets between Stan and son Clark Tracey on drums – a pair who'd been working together for many years by the time of this date, and who have fantastic energy that will instantly blow away any idea of nepotism you might have in mind! Clark is as dynamic on the drums as Stan is on the keys – and the pair work some amazing magic on original tunes that include "Stick Chops", "Foregone Conclusion", "M25", "Curry Favour", "Soundcheck", "Gambons", and "Midnight Around". CD2 features a trio performance, as bassist Andrew Clyndert joins Stan and Clark – as the group move through a mix of wonderfully reworked jazz classics, and a strong tune of Stan's own – titles that include "Lil Ol Pottsville", "Let's Cool One", "Angelica", "Goodbye", "Blue Monk", and "Chelsea Bridge".
