A very promising single from Brit soul upstart Liam Bailey – a diverse talent with a love for myriad American, British & Carribbean soul music – here with a single on Truth & Soul with a love for stripped down reggae soul! Here Bailey is working with NYC funky soul torch carriers Truth & Soul Records, really letting these songs simmer in an honest, real and raw stew of vocals, organ, drums and bass. Word is that Bailey is working with Salaam Remi for a major label debut, and we're thinking there's major potential for a huge breakout when that comes out – Bailey's got the goods, that's for sure!

A great lost bit of mid 70s Motown – a pair of should-be classic albums by Dynamic Superiors – in a single set! Dynamic Superiors were a great harmony group with an east coast sound – quite different from the usual Motown combo in that their vocals were often allowed very free range, with less of the tightness of the usual Motown group soul album. Ashford & Simpson produced the record – with arrangements by Leon Pendarvis, Richard Tee, and Arthur Jenkins – and the whole thing's a sweet soul treasure that's got some excellent mellow soul cuts! Titles from the self-titled set include "One Nighter", "Don't Send Nobody Else", "Shoe Shoe Shine", "Star of My Life", and "Leave It Alone". Pure Pleasure is another sweet set – arranged with a bit more of a high stepping groove than some of the other Motown work of the time. Backings are handled by a range of talents that includes Paul Riser, William Eaton, Al Gorgoni, and Horace Ott – but the real charm is the way the group's innocent harmony style puts over the lyrics, all of which are very strong tunes written by the team of Ashford & Simpson. Titles include "Face The Music", "Hit & Run Lovers", "Deception", "Pleasure", "Nobody's Gonna Change Me", "Feeling Mellow", "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing", and "Don't Give Up On Me Baby".

Sweet group soul from The Dynamic Superiors – one of the few late 70s comers who still held onto that great falsetto lead that was big in the earlier part of the decade! The album does a great job of mixing funky numbers with sweeter, mellower cuts – in ways that also kind of bridge the group soul modes a record like this represents – some of the gentler sounds of the indie generation, and that growing dancefloor concentration of bigger labels in the late 70s. Throughout it all, the Superiors hold their own nicely – and titles include "All In Love Is Fair", "Happy Song", "Give It All Up", "Here Comes That Feeling Again", "Nowhere To Run", "You're What I Need", and "Once Is Just Not Enough". CD features three bonus tracks – parts 1 and 2 of "Nowhere To Run (US single edit)" – and "You're What I Need (US single edit)".

The brass is definitely dynamic here – arcing, curving, and grooving in the best Sharps & Flats mode! The group's at their late 60s best on this well-titled set – really moving past conventional big band styles, and hitting a very groovy sound throughout – one that rivals the best instrumental modes at A&M Records in the US, or some of the tighter jazzy projects from MPS too! There's a fair bit of horns in the lineup, but the arrangements are nice and lean – and the players really come together strongly – never trying to blow things too out of line, and really letting the rhythms direct their hip energy here. Titles include "Moneypenny Goes For Broke", "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "Fool On The Hill", "Hold On I'm Comin", "Amen", "Gumba Gumba", "Wave", and "The Look Of Love".

The 101 Strings organization matches up with a groovy percussion ensemble, for a sound that's like some of the good RCA percussion bachelor pad LPs from the 50's. Tracks include "Voodoo Moon", "Ski Run", "Dizzy Fingers", "Roller Coaster", and "Bats In The Belfry". We think you get the picture!

Oliver Nelson did the arrangements and leads a big band, but the real focus is on Jimmy and Wes' solos, which are given a lot of room to roam in long tracks like "James & Wes", "Night Train", and "Down By The Riverside". Nice hard playing from Jimmy, with that great tone that he was getting in the mid 60's, and lots of very clean Hammond lines on his solos.

Wow! A storming collection of funk and hard grooving soul from the furiously productive period between the late 60s & early 70s – incredible material spun out by NYC labels Scepter, Wand, Dynamo & Musicor – deep stuff, too, with names that we simply don't see often enough these kinds of releases! Dynamic Grooves is just that – with killer numbers by favorites of funk collectors, but relatively (and sadly) obscure figures when it comes to mainstream knowledge all these years later – along with a few bonafide legends. Seminal southern soul from the legendary Clarence Carter – one of his early killers for Atlantic Records, all of which really stand out from most of his work to come in later years! There's a raw, raspy brilliance here that's undeniable – the blind singer stepping out with incredible confidence on a host of tunes that really run the gamut – numbers of love and loss, mixed with a few more contemporary pop tracks – but all given a unique Muscle Shoals twist that really transforms them. Carter wins our heart from the start with his version of "I'd Rather Go Blind" – then keeps on soaring through cuts that include "Think About It", "Steal Away", "Look What I Got", "That Old Time Feeling", "Let Me Comfort You", "Weekend Love", "Light My Fire", and "Too Weak To Fight".

Excellent stuff! This Japanese album is ostensibly a set of Latin tracks, but in reality, it's a very cool set of groovy instrumentals, arranged with a good jazzy and funky feel, and with a very tight sound. There's three nice breakbeat tracks on here – "El Condor Pasa", "Dock Of The Bay", and "Spinning Wheel" – and a number of the other cuts are excellent groovers. The whole thing's a real treasure, and is the kind of thing we probably won't ever see again!

"Dynamic" is right – as Rod's one of the hippest large group arrangers of his time! The album's a really wonderful record that features Rod leading an octet with a distinctly modern touch – almost building off the styles of Kenton groups of the 50s, but with more of the energetic twists and turns of some of the west coast groups of later years. Players are mostly lesser-known names – save for trumpeter Rolf Ericson – and the album features some really great tenor work by George Marge, who we only know from this record. Tracks are angular and fresh, but always nicely swinging – and titles include "Holler", "Jelly Man", "El General", "Upper Bay", and "Ah! Spain" – all by Levitt!

A lost funky soul LP by Starfire, billed here as "The Baddest Five Stars in the Galaxy", and hailing from Richmond, VA! This is a silver-covered repressing of the band's second album – done on the obscure Dynamic Artists label in Virginia – and it's a great collection of the group's early work, cut back at a time when they were soaring along on a strong Earth Wind & Fire vibe – mixing up funk and soulful ballads nicely! There's some good spacey production touches that further enforce the "star" quality of their name – pushing things slightly into the stratosphere, in a way that sets them apart. Titles include the catchy midtempo modern number "Make The Most Of It", plus "I Want To Sing This Song For You", "Get Up Everybody", "Dancing & Singing", and "Super Sensuous Women".

Why these guys never got over bigger is beyond us! Between A Rock And A Hard Place is filled with dope rhymes, timeless beats, and a mellow, tuneful vibe that's as strong as just about anything we can think of from that fertile early-to-mid 80s scene. Titles include "Lower Da Boom", "Cummin' Thru Ya F**kin Block" feat Redman, "Drama", "Dynamite Soul", "C'Mon Wit Da Git Down" (plus the remix feat Busta Rhymes), "What Goes On?", and "Wrong Side Of Da Tracks". A couple of bonus tracks on this 2013 CD version: "Dynamic Soul II (Lip Service Remix)" feat Mad Skillz and "It's Gettin Hot (Remix)".

A nice set from these latter day Detroit free music explorers, with a spiritual vibe and a varied approach to improvisation that isn't afraid to groove at moments, but also involves some nice textural dynamic playing in a very post AACM mode. Anthony Holland plays reeds, Tani Tabal tablas and trap drums and Spencer Barefield a variety of guitars. 3 lengthy pieces and 1 shorter one: "Inbetween Song", "Roscoe Mitchell – Clouds Taking Pictures Of Birds", the 6-part "Transdimensional Space Window Suite" and "Dawudaphone Dance".

A real killer from the legendary Joe Bataan – an album of righteous power that really lives up to the dynamic promise of the title and cover! Joe Bataan's in top form throughout – serving up a blend of Latin grooves and 60s soul influences that few other artists of the time could touch – soaring and upbeat one minute, but mellow and laidback the next. There's a number of longer tracks on here that really move past the standard Latin Soul modes – bringing in bits of descarga jazz, instrumental soul, and mellower ballads to Joe's already-great blend of styles. The depth here is tremendous, and nearly every track's a winner! Titles include the slamming "It's A Good Feeling (Riot)", "Muneca", and "Mambo De Bataan" – plus the soul tracks "What Good Is A Castle", "My Cloud", "Daddy's Coming Home", "Ordinary Guy", and "For Your Love".

One of Bley's best records from the 60's, and a great session recorded in Rome with Barry Altschul on drums and Mark Levinson on bass. We think of this era in Bley's career as sort of his middle period, after some important time spent with Ornette, one of the few pianists Coleman ever used, and Jimmy Giuffre, as we as Sonny Rollins, all of whose influence had made an impact on Bley, as a performer, writer and leader. The playing is wide open, but with a keen sense of group interplay and a wonderful dynamic between the three, a post free sensibility that was very progressive but never too noisy or oblique. The tracks include Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin", Annette Peacock's "Both", Carla Bley's "Ida Lupino" and "Albert's Love Theme", and Bley's own "Mazatalon".

James Brown screams at the beginning of the record – "I'm Back! I'm Back!" – which is his proclamation that he was ready to take on a whole new generation of funk music – grooving with a new sound that was guaranteed to hit as big as it did in earlier years! The approach is a bit more uptempo than previous albums, but still never at all in a disco/club mode – and James really does strike a strong new chord with the groove here – stretching things out and cooking things up nicely. Rhythms are still quite sharp, although possibly not as dynamic as before – and titles include the great title medley of "Get Up Offa That Thing/Release The Pressure", plus "This Feeling", "Home Again", "I Refuse To Lose", and "Can't Take It With You".

Further genius from James Brown at the start of the 70s – a record that's starting to show some of the more open-ended grooves he'd explore with the JBs on their own albums – longer, stretched-out tracks that are way more than simple funk and soul! There's a sense of freewheeling energy here that's totally great – dynamic, powerful calls from James at the top of most tunes – and incredibly sharp work on horns and rhythm from the band – cutting grooves and turning lines like no other combo in the business, all with a great mix of deep soul and hard funk! The album features the 7 minute killer version of "Let a Man Come In & Do The Popcorn", plus "World (parts 1 & 2)", "It's A New Day (parts 1 & 2)", "Give It Up or Turn It Loose", "If I Ruled The World", "The Man In The Glass (part 1)", and "I'm Not Demanding (part 1)". A treasure trove of funk and soul!

Billed on the back as a "dynamic new singer", Marilyn's got a style that makes you feel like she's stepped off a stage – nice and swinging, with a bit of a showy approach, but relatively restrained overall. Arrangements have a nice bit of jazz, and were put together and conducted by Bob Florence – and titles include "Will He Like Me", "The Gentleman Is A Dope", "Like Love", "Cross Your Heart", "On The Other Side Of The Tracks", "Dear Friend", and "Since I've Been To You".

A great self produced album from Jimmy Cliff – very soulful, but with a rootsy political edge you might not expect from a pop reggae star like Cliff. Recorded in Jamaica at Dynamic Sounds, with a great lineup that includes the Heptones on backing vocals, and issued in the US by Warner as part of a big push on Jimmy's work when the film The Harder They Come was released. Titles include "Black Queen", "Be True", "Oh Jamaica", "Commercialization", "The Price Of Peace", "Poor Slave", and "Rip Off".

Quirky Brazilian rock from the late 70s – a bit arty at times, and more straightforward at others – almost post-glam sliding into new wave, if we can bludgeon about so many terms so loosely! There's probably a fair bit of wit in the lyrics here – which we can't get due to our lack of Portuguese – and lead singer Billy Bond seems to be a fairly flamboyant and dynamic type, almost reminding us a bit of the more dramatic New York rockers in the pre punk years. Titles include "O Rape", "Sao Paulo By Day", "Mandrake", "Boeing 723897", "Golden Acapuldo", and "Aeroporto De Congonhas".

A great blend of early rock and monster movie aesthetics from The Dynamic Del-Aires – a north New Jersey group who only cut a handful of singles, but also managed a key appearance in The Horror of Party Beach before fading away into obscurity! Despite that short time in the record racks, though – the group is totally great – a combo that almost blows away the best of the Northwest, and certainly has their same sort of raw, rocking, instrumental-heavy approach – although some numbers also feature some cool vocals too! This package brings together the rare singles, the movie tracks, and even some unissued live and demo tracks too – all in a beautiful-looking package with lots of photos of the group in action. Titles include "Drag", "So Far So Long", "Zombie Stomp", "The Crawl", "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", "Berserk", "Treble Rock", "Sing Sing Sing", "Someplace Else", and even a "Horror Of Party Beach" movie trailer!

A set that features DiMeola moving into some very dynamic territory – jamming out heavy on a mix of electric and acoustic guitars, with additional help from Paco DeLucia on acoustic at points. The instrumentation also features heavy electric piano from Jan Hammer, other keyboards from Barry Miles, bass from Anthony Jackson, and drums from Steve Gadd and Lenny White – all fusion powerhouse players who really take over the groove at times, but still leave enough room on the record for some gentler sounds from Paco and Al. Titles include "Elegant Gypsy Suite", "Flight Over Rio", "Midnight Tango", and "Race With Devil On Spanish Highway".

Rare late 70s Afro soul from Cameroonese bassist and singer Brigth Engelberts – insistent, hypnotic and danceable grooves that points the way to myriad trends in soul in the decade to come, well beyond easily categorizable Afro funk & soul! Some numbers have a punchier, hypnotic rhythmic dynamic, others steer a bit closer to a psych soul vibe! The groove is fairly tight, with Engelberts backed by keys, drums, congas & other percussion, and some horns, and it's plenty funky! Titles and singing are in English, and include "Civilisation In The World", "Free Me Now", "Get Together", "Let Me Near Them Say", and "Shifty Hand Woman".

Rare, raw and and explosive rare soul from The Explosive Dynamiks – a group hailing from mid 60s Lexington, KY! "Whole Lotta Loving" carries quite a charge – stripped down drums, incredible organ grooves, punchy sax and dynamic vocals. This is an aptly named group! "I Need You" is a moody, slower tune, at least at the start. The organ and vocals lead the way at the beginning, but as it approachs the chorus, the drums and horns come wailing in.

Damn! We sure dug the previous Fantastic Souls funky 45 on Kay Dee, but this one's a straight up monster! An eight piece combo, the Fantastic Souls are a deep enough roster bring a furiously paced, heated intensity as well have enough space for solos and more dynamic interplay. The drums are nice and heavy, the guitars vamp nicely, the horns are perfectly punchy, plus a nice bit with some bongos. On Part 2, it's stripped down and driven even more by the incredible percussion.

A trio of groovy soundtracks from Giovanni Fusco! First up is Violenza Segreta – one of those cool early 60s Italian scores that uses a fair bit of jazz, and brings in some other groovy touches too – especially in the way the instruments are recorded, often with some light echo touches that make for some very cool sounds! La Corruzione follows in a slightly similar vein, but has a bit more of a badass vibe too – more horror touches, and a mix of groovy moments with darker sounds – often served up by some sweet electric guitar! Last up is I Sovversivi – a score that has a really vibrant, dynamic sort of approach – often a bit subdued, but still with this range that really stands out – in ways that have the instruments speaking volumes with just a small amount of effort! The package is great – a whopping 27 tracks in all – with great sound, and some rare unreleased tracks too.

A seminal session of modern jazz and poetry – very similar to American experiments of the type from the 1950s, but recorded in mid 60s London with a group that includes pianist Michael Garrick, trumpeter Shake Keane, and alto saxophonist Joe Harriott! The double-length recording features both instrumental jazz and recitations by poets Adrian Mitchell, Dannie Abse, and Jeremy Robson – all presenting their own work, sometimes with musical backing from the Garrick group, sometimes without. The albums are almost worth it alone for the instrumental tracks by the Garrick Quintet – "Salvation March", "Vishnu", "Wedding Hymn", and "She's Like A Swallow" – all of which have the same dynamic changes and modern edges of Garrick's best work on other Argo albums of the time. But the poetic work is pretty good too – especially on the few sections that feature jazz backing, used in a way that draws from some of the beat-era albums from the US. Poetic titles include "Odd", "Pals", "First Love", "Stork In Jerez", "Apples", "The Long War", "SOS The Poets", and "A Face In The Crowd". CD also features bonus material from the Before Night/Day EP – 6 more tracks with readings by poet Jeremy Robson – with backing by a Garrick group with Joe Harriott on alto and Ian Carr on trumpet.

Music for lovers – and some languid lovers at that – thanks to some perfect mellow moods set by Jackie Gleason! The set's one of Jackie's undisputed classics for Capitol Records in the 50s – perfect sounds to woo a winsome lass, made slightly sexier by some great trumpet solos by Bobby Hackett – a player whose horn always seemed plenty at home amidst the larger arrangements provided by Gleason. And while Jackie's performances on TV were always pretty dynamic and explosive, his sound on record is something else entirely – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Alone Together", "I Cover The Waterfront", "Some Day", "Body & Soul", "My Love For Carmen", and "Love Is Here To Stay".

Something Special For Movie Lovers has Marty Gold taking on a host of movie themes from the early 60s – numbers by Ennio Morricone, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mandel, and others – all given a twist that's somewhere in the territory of some of Marty's earlier hi-fi material, but which also respects the sensitivity of the original soundtracks as well. There's some inventive arrangements on the set – just what we'd expect from Gold – and titles include "Sylvia", "Goldfinger", "Funny World", "Polly's Song", "A Heart Must Learn To Cry", and "Emily". Suddenly It's Springtime features lush strings mixed with occasionally dynamic touches – definitely one of the mellower albums that Marty Gold ever cut, but a set that's still got a wonderful sonic range overall! Titles include "The Story Of My Love", "Portrait Of Jennie", "I Wish You Love", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Smile", and "Suddenly It's Springtime".

A pair of instrumental classics from Marty Gold – back to back on a single CD! Sounds Unlimited is filled with soaring sounds from RCA maestro Marty Gold – maybe not the totally unlimited record you might expect from the title, but definitely a key 60s entry in the genre of bachelor pad hi fi records! There's a fair bit of horns in the orchestrations, with solos by Don Butterfield, Joe Wilder, Phil Bodner, and Mel Davis – all of whom help to color the tunes with lots of nice jazzy tones – giving the whole thing a bit more depth than the usual instrumental outing. Titles include "Alone Together", "When I Fall In love", "Ballerina", "Skylark", "The Donkey Serenade", and "Tonight". For Sound's Sake has Marty Gold really pushing the needle into the red – using lots of jazzy inflections to expand the dynamic range of the instrumentals on the set – with key solo work by players who include Phil Bodner and Jerome Richardson on reeds, as well as Joe Wilder on trumpet. Titles include "Mood Indigo", "Memories Of You", "Yesterdays", "All The Things You Are", "I Love Paris", "El Cumbanchero", and "Baubles Bangles & Beads".

One of the most dynamic George Gruntz albums we've heard in years – a sweet tribute to the Village Vanguard recordings of John Coltrane! The album's a modern one, and done with a large ensemble – but it's a really well-spirited tribute to Trane's famous live material from the Vanguard – music that not only stands out as some of his best from the time, but which also really went on to open up some fresh new spaces in jazz! After the success of Jarrett's Standards Trio recording, he revisits the format with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette – the first ever live recordings of this incredible trio in action! A trio of classics from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra! First up is the initial Presenting album – great music by one of the hippest large American ensembles of the late 60s – almost a US equivalent to the groovy sound of the Clark Boland Big Band over in Europe! Trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis had already made some great music together on their own – but once they came together in a record like this, they really found a great new direction for their energy – a bold musical force that's strong enough to also encompass the rich talents of players who include Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Joe Farrell on tenor, Jerome Richardson on soprano sax, Richard Williams on trumpet, Bob Brookmeyer and Tom McIntosh on trombones, Hank Jones on piano, and Richard Davis on bass! The sound is full, but never overwhelming – and like the Clark Boland group, this one has a great way of breaking open to allow key soloists to have some great space on their own – a modern approach, and one that still never has the band losing its groove. Titles include "ABC Blues", "Mean What You Say", "Three & One", and "Once Around". The next album was recorded live in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis home turf at the Village Vanguard! The group at this point was a freshly-created outfit filled with some of the best large group jazz soloists of the time – players that included Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Eddie Daniels, Pepper Adams, Richard Williams, and Bob Brookmeyer – not to mention Jones and Lewis themselves! And while the Jones/Lewis group had many years over which to hone their craft, they've never sounded better than on these initial recordings – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Samba Con Getchu", "A That's Freedom", "Bachafillen", and "Little Pixie". On the last album in the set, Ruth Brown joins the big band of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – in a set that's a real standout in the career of all three artists! Thad and Mel already have a pretty great groove going at this point – a large ensemble approach to jazz, yet one that's swingingly soulful – very much on a par with some of Gerald Wilson's hip work of the same time at time. And adding in Ruth Brown's vocals is a great choice – as she not only needs a great showcase like this for her amazing voice, but also because she really helps unlock a soulful sort of energy that the group always had in their instrumental music. The approach is a bit like some of Etta Jones' best 60s recordings – a nice shift for Brown – and titles include "Black Coffee", "Fine Brown Frame", "You Won't Let Go", "Trouble In Mind", and "Be Anything (But Be Mine)".

Way way more than just a simple "jazz meets Broadway" session – as Shelly's working here with vocals by Jack Sheldon & Irene Kral, and arrangements by soundtrack maestro Johnny Williams – in a style that completely recasts the score! The album's got a really dynamic kind of range – one that's purely phonographic, and not just a weak attempt to capture Broadway on wax. A killer bit of Latin jazz from the 70s – one of the first records issued under the name of percussionist Ray Mantilla, and a really smoking set that features funky flute from Jeremy Steig, bass from Eddie Gomez, and both drums and keyboards from the mighty Joe Chambers! The tunes have a dynamic energy that's totally great – way more than just straight Latin, and proof that even at the start, Ray was always trying to reach some new directions with his music. The set begins with a tight "Percussion Intro", then rolls into a batch of original groovers titled "Inca Love Chant", "Chango Llama", "Caravanessa", and the nice long "Seven for Mantilla".

Ahhh, good ol' Mel & Tim – possibly our favorite soul duo ever, and a really dynamic pair that carve some great new territory away from the path set by Sam & Dave! The album's a bit of a comeback for the duo, as you'd guess from the title – even though it was only recorded a few years after their initial work for the Bamboo label. There's a stylistic shift that marks a second chapter in the Mel & Tim groove – as they move away from the New York uptown sound, and go for more of a gritty southern sound – thanks to help from producer/arrangers Barry Beckett and Roger Hawkins. The set list is filled with loads of great southern soul tunes – penned by composers who include Phillip Mitchell, Isaac Hayes, Dan Penn, and Homer Banks – on the titles "Heaven Knows", "Wrap It Up", "Don't Mess With My Money My Honey Or My Woman", "Carry Me", and a great cover of "I'm Your Puppet". CD reissue includes the bonus tracks "Forever In A Day", "It's Those Little Things That Count", "The Same Folk", and "Yes We Can-Can".

Echoey pop from the Italian scene of the early 60s – a record that already sparkles with dynamic vocals from the legendary Mina – but which also has some great studio touches too! There's a lively, optimistic mix of modes going on here – electric guitar that rings out boldly next to the vocals, rhythms borrowed from rock and Latin, and all-out vocals from Mina – sung with the kind of power and charm that no American singer could touch! The whole thing's great – the kind of music you'd hear a pretty girl playing on her transistor radio in a Fellini film – and titles include "Ho Paura", "Personalita", "La Nonna Magdalena", "Il Cielo In Una Stanza", "Invoco Te", "Coriandoli", "Una Zebra A Pois", and "Pesci Rossi".

A brilliant portrait of the mid 70s NYC improvisation scene by the Music Ensemble – a collective featuring Billy Bang on violin, William Parker on bass, Roger Baird on drums, percussion and flute, Malik Baraka on trumpet and Daniel Carter tenor, alto, flute and percussion! The pieces generally start with a roomy, measured dynamic and grow in intensity, never really getting too intense, and showcasing the intuitive interplay with the players. As Chicago residents, we can really feel the genesis of the later sounds of this city's improv scene, but the style casts a pretty wide net of influence. Baird's archival tapes supplied the material for this CD, and the tracks includes 2 long pieces – the 31+ minute "Stance Dance (Courage)" recorded in April of 1974 at Kingsborough College in Brooklyn with bass by Herb Kahn, and the 18+ minute "Arithmetical Mystic" from a February 1975 date at NYC's Holy Name School Auditorium. The other pieces, "Echoes Wind Transpire" and "Radiatory Fineness", a from the February '75 date.

Great recent work from the legendary Janko Nilovic – an artist that most folks know best for his sound library sessions of the 70s, still sounding great here in a jazz trio mode! Nilovic plays Yamaha keyboards, in a trio that features both acoustic and electric bass, and percussion as well as drums – all with a style that's a lot more dynamic than the usual piano trio record – with plenty of funky echoes of Janko's sublime sides from the 70s! All tracks are originals, and they stretch out nicely – longer than before for Nilovic, which creates some nice complication in the keyboard solos without ever losing focus on the groove either – especially once things build as the album rolls along. The kind of set you'd be stoked to find if it was rare vinyl from the 70s – and titles include "Logos", "Metallochrome", "Paris Balkans", "Et Alors", "Balkania", "Cosmic Energy", and "Giant Locomotion".

Marty Paich takes on a host of Broadway tunes from the 50s – but as always with his best work, the result is something quite far from its roots – an amazing batch of jazzy instrumentals that owes very little to the original conception of the tunes! Paich's got an incredible ear for arrangements here – one that manages to make a large ensemble swing with even more dynamic modes than some of his 50s LA contemporaries, but never in ways that fall into some of the more hi-fi oriented tricks or gimmicks of the time. There's always great space for solo voices and personal feelings in the music – which is important, given that the lineup includes Art Pepper on alto, Bill Perkins on tenor, Jimmy Giuffre on baritone, and Stu Williamson on trumpet – not to mention the legendary Scott LaFaro on bass. Titles include "I Love Paris", "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face", "It's All Right With Me", "Just In Time", "Lazy Afternoon", "If I Were A Bell", and " Younger Than Springtime".

Surprisingly sweet grooves from guitarist Jimmy Ponder – one of the few from the jazz funk generation who kept on going strong into the 80s! Jimmy's sound here is nicely laidback – a nice change from his smoother albums of a few years before, and set up in an almost-classic sort of mode with John Patton on organ! The sound isn't as hard-wailing as a Blue Note date from the 60s, but it's also pretty good too – nicely chromatic, and really showing the change in Ponder's approach to the guitar over the years – informed with a bit of Wes Montgomery phrasing, but still grooving overall. Patton's organ is never too dynamic, but always nice –a nd other players include James Anderson on tenor, Geary Moore on rhythm guitar, Eddie Gladden on drums, and Lawrence Killian on percussion. Titles include "I'll Always Be There", "Jump", "In A Mellow Tone", "When Love Comes My Way", and "Blues For Betty".

Roctober strikes again with another fantastic issue of music wisdom and knowledge from the far side of the spectrum! This time around, the spotlight's on Zory Zenith & Zolar X – who are covered in unusual detail – but our Dusty Groove ears are most tuned to the articles on Archie Bell, Kraftwerk, and Bernie Worrell. Yet as usual, we find our eyes straying all over the issue – captivated by features on oddball artists we'd never heard before, and drawn in by the always-great reviews, comics, and smaller bits in the magazine! An obscure one from Annie Ross – recording here as a solo act back in England after leaving her famous group with Dave Lambert and John Hendricks! The style here is a bit like some of the solo work that Ross cut in the US at the end of the 50s – particularly her sides for Pacific Jazz – not as vocalese and solo-oriented as the sort of recordings that first got her noticed, but still a lot more dynamic than most straighter jazz singers of the time! Arrangements are pretty groovy overall – nicely jazzy, and penned by Johnnie Spence – also produced by John Barry, who really helps keep the right sort of "punch" in the set. Titles include "Fly Me To The Moon", "Nature Boy", "A Lot Of Livin To Do", "Like Someone In Love", "A Handful Of Songs", and "All Of You".

Dynamic jazz rock from the French scene of the 70s – combo with a strong penchant for stretching out strongly on organ and guitar – but one that also has a few more sensitive, folksy moments as well! The tracks shift nicely between longer numbers and shorter ones – the shorter tracks usually a bit more up-close and personal, with gentle vocals from Rose Podwojny – and the longer numbers usually hit more of a progressive feel, with some especially nice mellotron work at a few points. Titles include "Vision", "Never Good At Sayin Goodbye", "Underground Session", "Old Dom Is Dead", "To Take Him Away", and "Metakara".

The third and best album yet from Sao Paulo Underground – formed by Chicago scene veteran and sonic adventurer Rob Mazurek – with a sound that's informed by the rhythms and creatively boundless possibilities of Tropicalia era Brazil and well beyond, along with the cosmic spirit of other Mazurek projects such as the Exploding Star Orchestra. This is hypnotic, attention seizing work that pushes boundaries and challenges tradition while still respecting it – it's never less than fully engrossing and pulls you right in, but it also skirts convention on just about every level. Mazurek's on coronet and electronics that fracture and fuzz out the atmosphere, creating some really dynamic interplay with instrumentation. Mauricio Takara is on cavaquinho, drums and percussion, Guilherme Granado on keys, loops, samples and percussion and Richard Ribeiro on drums. A pair of excellent tracks feature fellow modern greats with roots in the Chicago underground – vibes player Jason Adasiewicz and drummer John Herndon on "Just Lovin'" and "Six Six Eight" – the latter also featuring bass player Matthew Lux. The entire album is no less impressive, though! Titles include "Jagoda's Dream", "Pigeon", "Carambola", "Colibri", "Lado Leste", and "Rio Negro".

A great date from the non-Louis Prima years of Keely Smith – a rare radio performance done with backing from the Count Basie Band! Both Keely and Basie are at the height of their powers here – and the album has a format that alternates vocal numbers with some equally great instrumental tracks – played by the Count's group with all the soulful, dynamic qualities of their best recordings for Roulette Records! Given the radio presentation, the recording quality is great – and the combination of talents makes for a really unique date that's quite different than any of Smith's other solo records. Jiri plays alto, soprano, flute, and a bit of recorder – and there's a dynamic energy to the record that's really wonderful. The rhythms have some of the quality of Allen's recent work, but they're also pushed out a lot more by Tenor's complicated jazz leanings – really mixed up beautifully, and mixed with some righteous vocals from Allonymous, Mariamu Morris, and Jimi himself. Instrumentation is live, and features great drums from Tony – plus killer keyboards, guitar, trumpet, and percussion – on titles that include "Against The Wall", "Selfish Gene", "Path To Wisdom", "Mama England", "Cella's Walk", "Three Continents", "Got My Egusi", and "Darker Side Of Night".

A beautifully full session from McCoy Tyner – one recorded with added horns and voices, and very much in the mode of some of Horce Silver's best 70s experiments for Blue Note! The sound is as bold, dynamic, and soulful as other Tyner albums from the time – and the added elements really help create a unique feeling – horn parts that underscore the power of Tyner's piano, and wordless vocals that rise to the skies, with a feel similar to Donald Byrd or Max Roach sessions like this – but with a bit more 70s vibe overall. Other players include Earl Klugh on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums – and solos are by Jon Faddis on trumpet, Alex Foster on tenor, and Charles Stephens on trombone. Titles include "For Tomorrow", "Opus", "Festival In Bahia", "Rotunda", and "Uptown".

A really unusual album from guitarist Al Viola – all solo material, recorded in the mid 50s – and quite a change from some of the more dynamic albums that Al would record in later years! The guitar here has a warmly acoustic feel, yet is still quite jazz-based overall – yet also, in a way, prefaces some of the styles that would soon come from the bossa generation – such as work from Luiz Bonfa, some of the Latin-tinged sides of Laurindo Almeida, or some later studies on the guitar by Baden Powell! Yet the early date of the record really makes the whole thing stand out, and sound very fresh – on titles that include "Nocturne", "Alone Together", "Warm Valley", "Don't Blame Me", "My Romance", and "I'll Remember April".

Two sets of piano solos from Per Henrik Wallin – recorded over two decades apart, yet together showing a tremendous legacy in music! The 1982 tracks are amazingly dynamic – at times bursting forth with almost Cecil Taylor-like runs on the piano, at other times moving with a more careful modernism that you might expect from a player like Paul Bley or Steve Kuhn – yet always managing to come across with a sense of soul in the process – a warm that really makes the tracks resonate strongly with our ears. The 2003 recordings have even more of this sensibility – a balance between modernism and swing that's not unlike the sounds of Herbie Nichols or Elmo Hope in the 50s – although with a slightly freer vibe overall. In these sides, Wallin's got a great command of the keyboard – yet still always manages to find the "heart" of the piano, even when running free – a quality that many others would do well to follow. Titles include "Lullaby For Harry", "Southern Exit", "Rats Of Wisdom", "One Knife Is Enough", "Vattern", "Receptet", "People", "Fanerier Nr 8", "My Pearl Just Left", and "You Once".

One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time! The track's driving, building energy shows a newly focused side to Weather Report – one that's traded some of the spacier, more experimental moments of the past for a dynamic energy that still puts them ahead of most other 70s fusion supergroups. The presence of Jaco Pastorius is felt quite strongly here – especially on the way the colors ebb and flow up from the bottom – and the way that Jaco's using his bass with the energy of a solo jazz guitar! Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena are on percussion, and Wayne Shorter's reeds still crackle with a nice degree of soul – on titles that include "Harlequin", "Rumba Mama", "A Remark You Made", "Teen Town", "Palladium", "Havona", and "The Juggler".

Ashford & Simpson recorded plenty of great work on their own, but they were also a tremendous pair of songwriters – and had a way of penning can't-miss work that sounded great in just about anyone's hands! This collection is great testament to that fact – as it starts with gems the duo first wrote back in their early Motown days, then quickly moves up to their late 70s fame, and the way they had a major impact on the dancefloor. The tracks here are often quite familiar, but the actual recordings are sometimes obscure – lesser-known takes on some of Ashford & Simpson's best numbers, laid out back to back as proof of their genius talent for a groovy soul tune. The best look at Chicago's legendary Twinight label that we've ever seen – a massive 2CD set that goes way past the obvious hits, and really digs into the heart and soul of this unique little record company! Twinight is best known as the home of Syl Johnson during his legendary run of funky soul singles at the end of the 60s – but the company was also home to a lot of other great talent during the same stretch – harmony vocal groups, sweet soul singers, funky combos, and more – all of which you'll hear in this incredible little set! Some of the wildest sounds we've ever heard from the piano – a record with energy that's somewhere between John Cage and Cecil Taylor! At times, Patrizio Fariselli plays with a great sensitivity to silence – letting it emerge with as much force as his well-placed work on the keys of the piano. But at other times, he comes off with a full, frenzied sound that's really dynamic and almost explosive – so much so that we're left wondering about the state of the piano after he's walked away! One of the most righteous albums of jazz ever recorded – a brilliant blend of soulful and avant garde styles, backed up by a chorus of voices that have a really soulful sound! Part of the style shares the energy of similar vocal/jazz projects by Max Roach and Billy Harper, but Gale's conception of the music is much more dynamic, and very carefully rooted in song structures – with a sound that's as powerful today as it was when it was recorded! Rare funk from the same Minneapolis scene that gave the world Prince – a legendary indie set from the end of the 70s, put together by Lewis brothers Pierre and Andre! Despite their French names, the duo have a mighty American groove on the set – a wicked approach to funk that's very much in the best ensemble mode of the period – but leaner too, given the smaller lineup, and relatively sparse production – which makes most of the record bristle like some rare boogie 45! Vocals are by the brothers, plus female singer Barbara Bolar, and later Prince-mate Sonny Thompson – and Prince himself even adds in some slight magic to one cut on the set. A blasting barrage of sound from Paul Bley – a fierce session that's right up there with the most dynamic ESP work of the 60s – and quite different from some of Bley's more introspective music! The group here is a quintet – with bold work from Marshall Allen on alto sax and Dewey Johnson on trumpet – both working in the frontline with almost Ayler-like energy. Remaining players include the great Eddie Gomez on bass and Milford Graves on drums – romping together through a set of compelling Carla Bley compositions, including "And Now The Queen", "Walking Woman", "Ictus", "Barrage", and "Batterie".

A long-overdue look at one of the most important groups to grace the British jazz scene of the 60s and 70s – the legendary Blue Notes, a group of South African expatriates with an undeniably huge influence on the music of their new homeland! The ensemble featured key players who went onto do some amazing work on their own, but first came together in this group – trumpeter Mongezi Feza, saxophonist Dudu Pukwana, pianist Chris McGregor, bassist Johnny Dyani, and drummer Louis Moholo – all players as dynamic together and important on their own as the members of the Art Emsemble of Chicago from the US. The set finally brings out all of the group's key albums for the Ogun label, plus some great bonus material too – a rich tapestry of work that shows the combo's evolution from African-tinged jazz of the 60s to some much more farther-reaching sounds in the 70s – all beautifully packaged, with each album presented on its own inside a larger slipcase! The set features The Blue Notes Legacy, a live date in South Africa from 1964; Blue Notes For Mongezi, a double-length set recorded after the passing of group trumpeter Mongezi Feza; Blue Notes For Johnny, a date recorded after the passing of bassist Johnny Dyani; and Blue Notes In Concert, a great live date recorded in 1977. There's a wealth of wonderful music here – and along with the bonus tracks, the set also features a great booklet of remembrances and vintage photos!

Amazing bossa jazz from one of Brazil's best combos! The Bossa Tres were led by dynamic pianist Luis Carlos Vinhas – an incredibly strong talent who was as great an arranger as he was a piano player – and on this early session, he's at his most firey, really flowing out with tremendous creative energy on the keys! This album is one of the group's rarest – as it was recorded in New York for the Audio Fidelity label, and only ever issued briefly in the early 60s. It's a killer batch of lively bossa piano tunes – with crackling drums, tight rhythms, and some firecracker work on the keys by Vinhas. 12 tracks in all – and titles include "Bossa 3 Theme", "So Saudade", "Green Dolphin Street", "Ceu E Mar", "Zelao", and "Nao Faz Assim". Great stuff all the way through – and a real bossa treasure!

Some of the most soulful jazz recorded in Europe during the 1960s – and the complete Philips recordings of German saxophonist Klaus Doldinger! Doldinger's probably best remembered for the more dynamic fusion he cut with the Passport group in the 70s, but back in his early years he was full on soul jazz player, steeped in the tradition of Gene Ammons, Lou Donaldson, Sonny Stitt, and others before him – all players that we'd easily rank Doldinger with during these years, given the ultra-high level of his work for Philips! But given his German orientation, Doldinger also picked up on some of the freer influences that were running around the European scene of the 60s – and the tracks here don't just sparkle with American soul jazz sounds, but also show a bit of Brazilian and more progressive jazz influences as well. And alongside Doldinger's tremendous tenor and soprano sax, the recordings here are equally noteworthy for the organ lines of Ingrfried Hoffmann – an ultra-cool player on the Hammond, with the mixture of rhythmic energy and playfulness you might find in the work of Jack McDuff for Prestige at the same time! Doldinger and Hoffmann cook tremendously throughout – so much so, you can easily forget their country of origin, and just put these sides on equally next to your favorites from Prestige or Cadet. 4CD package features material from 4 full albums, plus rare singles – and also includes a full CD of other rare Doldinger recordings from the same time! Early jazz rock from Bob Downes Open Music – composed and arranged by Downes and not a far cry stylistically as the Electric City LP that came out just a bit earlier – a mix of charged, drum heavy movements and airier flute led tapestries! The mood shifting dynamic makes the record pretty exciting, as does the stellar musicianship and imaginative compositions that fearlessly resist categorization. Downes plays different flutes plus sax, bels and tam tam, with Dennis Smith and John Stevens on drums, Harry Miller on bass and Chris Spedding on guitar. Titles include "Dream Journey: "A Score For Blind Sight By The Ballet Rambert", "Integration", "Contact", "Ghosts In Space", "Sesert Haze" and "Electric City".

A pair of overlooked gems from Ronnie Dyson – both of which show there's way more to love than just his early hits! On Love In All Flavors, Ronnie's older than during his falsetto soul early years – and he's working here with some impeccably mature Chicago soul arrangements by Gene Barge, Gene Page, and Richard Evans. The album's produced by the always-great modern soul dynamic duo of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancey (ex-Independents), and it's got an approach that mixes deeply soulful vocals with smoother backings, kind of in the same mode that The Manhattans were using, but with a bit more of a modern tip that points towards the Capitol work by the Jackson/Yancey team. Tracks include "I Want To Be Where You Are", "Sara Smile", "Don't Be Afraid", "I Just Want To Be There", and "Ain't Nothing Wrong". On More You Do It, Dyson works with the 70s hit soul team of Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy – the pair who brought great sound to Natalie Cole, and who work some similar magic with Ronnie! The album was recorded in Chicago – partially at Curtom – and has arrangements from Gene Barge, Gene Page, and Richard Evans – all of whom bring a fullness to the record that's a nice change from Dyson's more fragile work of earlier years. Some of the best cuts have a gentle midtempo groove that's almost like Leroy Hutson – warm, and never slick – very personal, and stepping along nicely. Titles include "The More You Do It", "You & Me", "Jive Talkin", "Close To You", "Love Won't Let Me Wait", and "Lovin Feelin".

A wealth of great work from vocalist Ethel Ennis – her full This Is Ethel Ennis album for RCA, plus a host of additional bonus tracks as well! The full album features Ethel's great vocals alongside dynamic backings from Sid Bass – music that's certainly jazz at the core, but which also has some of the more inventive flourishes that Sid was bringing to his own instrumental sides for RCA – not really tricks or gimmicks, but these great little touches that help keep things interesting throughout! Ethel's vocals are straightforward, but have a nice undercurrent of soul – more so than the usual RCA singers of the time – and titles include "Dear Friend", "An Occasional Man", "He Loves Me", "As You Desire Me", "Who Will Buy", "Night Club", "Love Don't Turn Away", and "When Did I Fall In Love". CD also features 10 more bonus tracks – additional RCA singles cut by Ennis with backings from Dick Hyman, Claus Ogerman, Marty Manning, and others. Titles include "Matchmaker Matchmaker", "I've Got That Feeling", "About Love", "We Could Learn Together", "San Juan", and "The Boy From Ipanema".

Nice double-length CD that brings together tuff soul jazz tenor tracks culled from some mid 60s sessions that Red Holloway cut with Brother Jack McDuff. Some of the tracks appeared on the albums Cookin' Together and The Dynamic Jack McDuff, and the material is a mix of quartet sides and larger group ones, with Benny Golson directing the band. Red's in the pocket all the way through, and it's a real treat to hear him trading lines with Brother Jack's firey organ. Titles include "Wives & Lovers", "Bossa Nova West", "Redwood City", "Shout Brother", and "Rail Head". Very groovy!

Broadway is the beat, but the sound has plenty of Parisian touches, too – thanks to arrangements from the mighty Michel Legrand! Some great work that will completely redefine your ideas about calypso music – especially if they're mostly relegated to cliches about Harry Belafonte! The tracks here were all recorded by Rupert "Lord Invader" Grant in New York during the late 40s and early 50s – and done with a rough-edged quality that really lives up to the dynamic promise of the title! Most tunes are heavy on acoustic percussion underneath the vocals – used starkly and strongly to underscore the brash lyrics of the songs. CD features 17 tracks that include "Chicago Chicago", "New York Subway", "Out The Fire", "Ten Thousand To Bar Me One", "Cousin Family", "When You Hear I Die", "Labor Day", and "Brown Girl In The Ring".

A killer bit of Latin jazz from the 70s – one of the first records issued under the name of percussionist Ray Mantilla, and a really smoking set that features funky flute from Jeremy Steig, bass from Eddie Gomez, and both drums and keyboards from the mighty Joe Chambers! The tunes have a dynamic energy that's totally great – way more than just straight Latin, and proof that even at the start, Ray was always trying to reach some new directions with his music. The set begins with a tight "Percussion Intro", then rolls into a batch of original groovers titled "Inca Love Chant", "Chango Llama", "Caravanessa", and the nice long "Seven for Mantilla".

Arizona funk from George Bowman and his Memphis Soul – recorded at Phoenix's Audio Recorders studio in the late 60s – completely unreleased until now by Numero! "Don't Down Me People" is purely funky on a couple levels, most notably via the JB-schooled vocals by guitarist/singer/songwriter Mr. Bowman, along with some horn blasts and staggering drums. Those drums purportedly come courtesy of Rodney Brown of Dyke & The Blazers, which certainly makes some sense. The guitar dynamic is what really stands out, though – the riff is unshakable!

An amazing little soundtrack that's every bit as groovy as its cover – a great blend of 60s mod and Italian jazz, all in support of the skeleton-costumed master thief Kriminal! This set represents the first full length presentation of the film's soundtrack – a long-overdue masterpiece that steps off the jazzier modes used in Italian films of the early 60s, touched by some of the more dynamic production and arrangement styles that were creeping in later in the decade – all served up over short, sweet tracks that dance with delight and drama throughout! There's even a bit of the British and American spy modes of the time creeping into the mix – no doubt a way of highlighting the "international crime" reputation of lead character Kriminal. Pic disc version features a total of 22 tracks from the film – pressed on very cool looking vinyl!

An obscure 70s gem from Italian pianist Mario Rusca – a blend of modal grooving, Latin-tinged rhythms, and straight hard blowing. The group's a quintet – with Rusca on piano and electric piano, Larry Nocella on soprano and tenor sax, and rhythm on electric bass, drums, and percussion. Rusca's style on the keys is loping and looping – moving in wide-ranging shades of color, while Nocella's sharp-edged reedwork peppers across the top of the groove. The whole thing's nice, fresh, and very tasty – and tracks include "Dynamic", "Black Safari", "Astral Bird", "Smiling Harry", and "Free Impulse".

Not as freewheeling as some of Raymond Scott's earlier work, but still quite nice – a set that features added strings in the mix, but used with a sound that's every bit as wild and dynamic as some of Scot's small combo recordings! A few of the tunes are familiar Scott classics, others are a bit more obscure – and the arrangements are pure Raymond all the way through – light years away from conventional scores of the time, and produced with a sense of sound as weird as the music! Titles include "Toy Trumpet", "Boy Scout In Switzerland", "Twilight In Turkey", "Power House", and "In An 18th Century Drawing Room".

Mr & Mrs Jazz – and their cool cousins too – given that the combo also features some sublime tenor sax from JR Monterose, in addition to vocals from Sue and piano from Ralph! The set's a much harder-edged date than you might guess from the cover – and Sharon's approach to arrangements is a bit more dynamic than later work with Tony Bennett – swinging in a cool Bethlehem way, but given a great punch from the instrumentation – which also includes vibes from Eddie Costa and guitar from Joe Puma! Sue Sharon's a pretty nice singer, and appears on about half the tracks – the others are instrumentals – and titles include "That Goldblatt Magic", "Mynah Lament", "Just You Just Me", "Nothing At All", "Hugette Waltz", "A Nightingale Can Sing The Blues", and "A Trout No Doubt".

One of the building blocks of the late 60s Tropicalia scene in Brazil – and a standout solo debut from the young Caetano Veloso! The album's got an approach that's as dynamic and trippy as its cover image might imply – the same amazing blend of sounds and styles you'd hear on contemporaneous records by Gal Costa or Os Mutantes – served up with similar wit, wisdom, and charm! Caetano's vocals are amazing throughout – filled with raspy power that goes beyond the barriers of language – and the production has loads of surprising elements tripping through the mix – some rootsy, some slightly orchestrated – but with a softer approach that resonates strongly with more psychedelic use of organ and guitar. The album's as powerful today as it was decades ago – an essential recording that holds up beautifully year after year! The kickoff track is "Tropicalia" (surprisingly enough!), and the album is a non-stop ride through gems like "Alegria, Alegria", "Onde Andaras", "Paisagem Util", "Ave Maria", and the groovy "Soy Loco Por Ti America", written by Gilberto Gil.

A Sentimental Journey from sax player Tim Warfield – taking on classic jazz and standards for moody, dynamic and wholly involving album! The title of course comes from the classic tune, sung by Doris Day in it's earliest hit incarnation, given a warm, weary and wonderful reading by Warfield and his crack quartet – who work similar magic on "I'll Be Seeing You", "My Man", "Crazy Rhythm", "In A Sentimental Mood", "Hear's That Rainy Day" and more. Player s include Terell Stafford on trumpet & flugelhorn, Pat Bianchi on B3 and Byron Landham on drums.
