A landmark New York session from Dollar Brand – recorded in the late 70s, with a larger group than usual! Brand spins out some really magical African-tinged jazz grooves – stretching forth in his usual modal mode, but augmented by a great set of horn parts that includes work by Don Cherry, Carlos Ward, and Hamiett Bluiett. Rhythmically, the album is incredibly strong as well – as it features bass work by Johnny Dyani, percussion by Claude Jones and John Betsch, and drums by Roy Brooks – working here at the height of his spiritual powers. One track on the album gets quite free, and titles include "Sister Rosie", "Jabulani" and "Hajj".

Soulful fusion by one of the best groups of their genre! The CD contains both albums recorded by Tarika Blue for Chiaroscuro Records in the 70s – both of them wonderful fusion records that have an incredibly soulful sound. The group features work by soulful luminaries like Justo Almario, James Mason, and Ryo Kawasaki – and the overall feel is sweetly bubbling, soul-inspired jazz – very much in the tradition of Roy Ayers' best work of the period, or work recorded for the same label by Mason and Kawasaki! Irene Datcher and Dolores Smith sing on a few tracks, giving the album a nice vocal dimension that takes things even deeper – and the CD features a total of 13 tracks that include "Love It", "Truth Is The Key", "Dreamflower", "Things Spring", "Blue Neptune", "Jimi", "Downtown Sound", "Sun Through Winter", "Sunshower", "Charlie", and "My Love Is So Free".

A great follow-up to the previous collaboration between pianist Ehud Asherie and tenorist Harry Allen – this time titled after a darker corner of downtown New York! As with the other date, this one features no other instrumentation at all – just warmly expressive duets on piano and tenor – spun out with the kind of classic tones you'd expect from Allen's work with bigger groups, yet also more intimate and personal as well. Tunes are mostly older standards, evoking the Lower East of the postwar years, and the key clubs that used to grace that scene – and titles include "Hey There", "Thou Swell", "Sposin", "Portrait In Black & White", and "Some Other Time".

A pivotal album for the group – released at a time when Black Ivory, like so many other east coast vocal groups, was making the transition away from an older sweet soul style to a more sophisticated club vocal sound. The group's producing themselves here – and we're guessing that most of the real work is being done by Leroy Burgess, although Patrick Adams still appears to be working with the group on the string and horn arrangements – giving things just the right sort of underground disco twist to make things groove! The record includes the great club track "Walking Downtown (Saturday Night)", a longtime fave around Chicago – plus "White Wind", "Making Love In My Mind", "Could This Be Magic", "Longer Ride", and "Can't You See".

Bouncy early gem from The Cyrkle – filled with easygoing, though impeccable harmonies – some sweet cover that put their own unique vibe on some great tunes (particularly) the cover – and some pretty wild and fuzzed out production touches! Early on, The Cyrkle records were great for adding some oddball elements to tunes that are otherwise pleasant 60s pop rock – some woozy keyboards here, some extra fuzzy guitar there – and harmonies as strong as any young group of the time! Includes "Red Rubber Ball", "Why Can't You Give Me What I Want", "Big, Little Woman", "Cloudy", "Cry", "Turn-Down Day", "Bony Moronie", "How Can I Leave Her", "Money To Burn" and more. This great Sundazed version is loaded up with bonus tracks, too, including "Straightening Out My Messed Up Life", "Downtown Blues (Previously Unissued)", "How Can I Leave Her (Previously Unissued Demo)", "We Had A Good Thing Goin'", "Reading Her Paper", "The Words" and more.

From their inception in late 1956, Ramsey Lewis and his famous Young/Holt-era trio were destined for great jazz fame. This 1958 session on Mercury (then based in the group's native Chicago) catches the trio right at the beginning – when they were taking tunes that were pretty well known, and turning them into tight, jaunty, often comically-tinged soul jazz numbers that were very popular with the folks at the downtown clubs. As proof of that, the album features Lewis-arranged versions of many familiar favorites – including "Dark Eyes", "Come Back To Sorrento", "Greensleeves", and "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child". Also includes a few originals – like "We Blue It" and "Soul Mist".

We're not sure what to make of the title – but to our ears, everything here sounds plenty new and plenty fresh – the kind of creative guitar-driven work we've come to expect from Jon Lundbom and his cool contemporaries from the Mostly Other People Do The Killing side of the universe! The group here also features Jon Irabagon on alto and soprano sax, Bryan Murray on tenor and balto sax, Moppa Elliott on bass, and Dan Monaghan on drums – and there's an intensity to the music right from the start – a blistering sort of energy that almost takes us back to some of the most creative downtown jazz experiments of the New York scene in the early 80s. Titles include "The Other Third One", "Of Being Done To", "The Bad Thing", and "Talent For Surrender".

Surprisingly great arty work from this obscure combo – a definite New York downtown vibe, especially on the funky first track!

A great album from Shirley Scott – with some excellent arrangements by Gary McFarland! We've always felt that Shirley plays best when she's not leading the group – when someone else is handling the arrangements, so that she can groove mightily on her own – and this album is a perfect illustration of that fact! The album has a sparkling bossa and 60s groove finish – similar to McFarland's albums for Verve at the time – and Shirley's light touch on the Hammond really makes the whole thing dance nicely! Tracks include a sweet version of "Soul Sauce", plus covers like "Can't Get Over the Bossa Nova", "Downtown", and "Dreamsville". Also includes "Latin Shadows", a great original by McFarland!

Some of the most compelling grooves the Talking Heads ever recorded – a set that sparkles with imaginative touches, and railroads forward on a wave of complicated rhythms! The sound is brilliant throughout – a genre-less approach that sheds the group's earlier art nerd aesthetic for one that's clearly influenced by late 70s funk and club – but takes that influence in a whole new direction! The whole thing's even fresher than some of the artier downtown moments that bubbled around at the time – as David Byrne and the group actually managed to cross over big with the record – hitting not only urban markets, but also getting some play from the classic rock crowd too. Brian Eno produced, and co-wrote the songs with the group – and some great Green World-esque electronics bubble through the mix, and hold the whole thing together beautifully. Titles include "Houses In Motion", "Once In A Lifetime", "The Great Curve", "Crosseyed & Painless", "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)", "Listening Wind", "Seen & Not Seen", and "The Overload".

Raspy guitar from James Blood Ulmer – cut right at the end of the 80s decade when he was clearly one of the most inventive players on his instrument! The set's got a quality that's similar to some of James' other records from the US of the time – as it's trying to branch out to a wider audience through the use of beats and vocals on many numbers – picking up plenty of the funky undercurrents that were going on in the New York downtown black rock scene! That later modifier definitely comes into play here – as Ulmer puts aside some of his freer jazz styles for more tuneful, song-based modes that highlight the vocals as much as the guitar. Titles include "Boss Machine", "Baby Snatcher", "I Don't Know Why", "She Ain't So Cold", "Peace & Happiness", and "Calling Marry".

A landmark album of the New York downtown scene – and one of the most groundbreaking guitar jazz albums of the 70s! James Blood Ulmer plays here with members of Ornette Coleman's group of the time – including Ornette himself, Denardo Coleman, and Jaamaladeen Tacuma. The style is very similar to that of Ornette's excellent Body Meta album – a mode that has the rhythms all turned inside themselves, using guitar as strongly as drums – in a style that's one of the most perfect visions of Coleman's harmelodic mode. The overall vibe is very Ornette-ish, but still also features plenty of great offbeat work by Ulmer on guitar – and titles include "Moons Shines", "Morning Bride", "Nothing To Say", and "Revealing".

The soundtrack to the rare 135 Grand Street New York, 1979 – a film documenting the post punk No Wave NYC scene which would last pretty well into the early 80s, but caught here in its ascendance – performances by Theoretical Girls, UT, A Band, Rhys Chatham, The Static, Steve Piccolo, Chinese Puzzle, Morales, Jill Kroesen and Youth In Asia! The film is made up of director Ericka Beckman's Super 8MM footage of acts performing in a downtown loft. The CD soundtrack includes material from the film and some bonus tracks on in the film, and titles include "Glazened Eyes" by Theoretical Girls, "Sharp's Loose" by UT, "Sand And Sea" and "Mirror, Mirror" by A Band, "Gay Girl In A Gay Bar" by Morales, "Talking Heads (Pt 1)" and "Amnesia" by Youth In Asia, "Superior Genes" by Steve Piccolo, plus bonus material by Chinese Puzzle, Kill Kroesen, The Static, Theoretical Girls and Steve Piccolo. 16 tracks in all.

Celluloid was a key force tying together the New York downtown scene at the start of the 80s, and the postcolonial music world of Paris – and as a result, they always operated with a culture-crossing style that few other companies of the time managed to hit – merging together sounds in really unlikely ways, and often coming up with fresh new styles in the process! The label's known for crate-diggers for its hip hop releases – and to world music fans for its electric Africa work – but they also were on the forefront of New York No Wave, avant jazz, and post-punk – and somehow found a way to integrate both young new talents, and older experimentalists who still had plenty to offer. This package finally does Celluloid justice – and goes way past the few simplistic comps of the label's work over the years – training the skilled Strut ear to the whole thing, and also serving up the full story of the label in the process. A pair of solo albums from actress Patty Duke – back to back on a single CD! Don't Just Stand There is surprisingly sweet pop from kid actress Patty – a set cut at a time when the right sort of studio backdrops could make just about any sort of voice into a hit record! The main maestro here is Arnold Goland – whose talents for a warm melody and jaunty rhythm really help Patty emerge as a singer without doing that much on her own – just serving up poppy lyrics with the same undercurrent of darkness you'd find in her screen appearances in film and TV – almost an eerie sense of loneliness, and a longing for the John Astin to come in her life! Titles include "Say Something Funny", "The End Of The World", "Don't Just Stand There", "Downtown", and "Why Don't They Understand". Patty is a record that reunites Duke with arranger Arnold Goland – whose pop talents in the studio work the same kind of magic with the singer that you'd find in some of the more impressive Brit female pop records of the time! Titles are a mix of different modes, all brought together nicely in the arrangements – and tunes include "The World Is Watching Us", "One Kiss Away", "Sure Gonna Miss Him", "Nothing But You", "Little Things Mean A Lot", and "Whenever She Holds You". CD also features two great tunes from the Billie film – "Funny Little Butterflies" and "Lonely Little In Between".

Smoothly stepping soul from Wally Badarou – not as atmospheric as on other releases, but with traces of that sound in a more funked up groove. There's some nice cuts on here that have a New York post punk funk approach to them – very downtown Danceteria, with almost a pre house kind of keyboard approach. Titles include "Mambo", "Spider Woman", "Hi Life", and "Chief Inspector" – and this is a 5 track ep.

The self-titled Black Ivory album is a pivotal set for the group – released at a time when Black Ivory, like so many other east coast vocal groups, was making the transition away from an older sweet soul style to a more sophisticated club vocal sound. An overlooked gem from the early 80s years at Salsoul – a set that's beat-heavy, and plenty funky too – with a groove that's nicely heavy on both roller skate and electro modes! The record's a bit more offbeat than the usual Salsoul set – and we mean that in a good way – more in the street-styled mode you'd hear on the Vaughan Mason/Butch Dayo collaboration for the label – and proof that the company had a strong ear for grooves that go way beyond disco! There's plenty of surprises here – and the approach to the grooves has a very New York feel that mixes together the best of the up-and-downtown modes of the time. Titles include "Angel Baby", "Come To Me", "Rock The Rhythm", "I've Been Watching You", "Holdin On", and "I Need Your Love".

A split Motown single, featuring an artist on each side, and tracks that are definitely designed to cash in on the dancefloor cash! The Originals step out in a full disco mode with "Downtown To Love Town" – a swirling number that's filled with lots of strings, and which boogies on out here in a special extended disco mix! Jermaine's "Let's Be Young" is mighty nice too!

Wonderful lost work from Michel Legrand – a fantastic, and fantastically overlooked, 70s soundtrack – completely essential to have in a CD version like this, since most of the music hardly appeared in the film at all! The score takes off nicely from some of Legrand's more famous work of the 60s and early 70s – with a mixture of warm themes, jazzy elements, and some of the funkier touches you'd expect from a cop/crime film – all at a level that's a bit less sentimental than some of his French film work, with just the right qualities to fit the offbeat story of the movie. There's a real Dave Grusin sort of approach going on at times – although with a bit more acoustic piano than electric keyboards – but Legrand also throws in a few softer bits to round things out nicely, and create a lot more depth in the music than you might expect for a low-budget film. Really great stuff overall – the kind of soundtrack that should have gotten proper release at the time, as it easily matches any of Legrand's bigger LP hits – and presented with great notes on both the film and music. Titles include "Papa Joe The Padrone", "Downtown", "Wall Street", "The Chase", "The Sleep Song", "The Sellers", and "Uptown".

Modern rock/funk, with sort of a New York downtown sound, and touches of the 80's days at Celluloid. The group has electric funky basslines, and some guest keyboards on tracks by Bernie Worrell, but the sound is mostly avant rock funk, instead of straight-on funky stuff. Tracks include "Flash", "Oricinal Cin-Dee", "Voices", "Can You Dig It", and "New Rage".

Bumping, bass-heavy jazz from Lonnie Plaxico – a set that certainly has some of the traces of the Arsenio Hall-ish image on the front cover, but also some slightly hipper elements as well! Plaxico's basswork has a nice sense of darkness on some of the best numbers – almost a version of the New York angularity from the more adventurous years of the downtown scene, turned a bit towards more common jazz modes – then smoothing out on some of the softer numbers. Players here include Greg Osby on alto and soprano, Robin Eubanks on trombone, James Weidman on piano and keyboards, and Graham Haynes on cornet – and titles include "Monotheism", "Chin Lang", "For You", "If You Only Knew", "Your Love Is Like A Dream Come True", "Love's Holiday", and "Shades".
