Rough and raw work from Big Bill Broonzy – well-done sides that feature Bill on vocals and acoustic guitar, recorded in Paris in the early 50s, and issued here in a US package on the Scepter label! There's a pretty earthy feel to most of the tracks – a real "crossroads" feel that possibly has more to say about postwar European perceptions of the blues than the actual sound of the American scene at the time – but from the perspective of over 50 years later, there's a definite classic feel to the record that really stands the test of time. Titles include "Hey Bud Blues", "Coal Black Curly Hair", "Low Down Blues", "Louise Louise Blues", "Letter To My Baby", and "John Henry".

Underground/outsider soundscapes from Crow44 on Stones Throw – a breezy, though unpredictable mix of low fi psych, new age-y instros and otherwise oddball melodic soundscapes – hard to describe, but pretty easy to get into! Crow44 is officially billed a compilation of recordings by a British one-man band – tailoring from a love of obscure lounge, new age, psych, surf and Eastern exotica. That said, it's "executive produced" by James Pants, features Pants-ian cover art and includes a "special thanks" to Peanut Butter Wolf's alter-ego Folerio, for what that all might add up to. We don't know exactly who's behind it, but it's a pretty sweet snapshot of under-the-radar Stones Throw! Includes "Love You To Death", "One Orange (Revisited)", "If You're Feeling Down" (Pt. 1 & Pt. 2), "Let's Do This Thing" and "Lamentations".

If the story is stripped down avant funk instrumentals with subtle stylistic twists and turns, it's a story worth telling – and that's what Clutchy Hopkins puts down on The Story Teller – an album that manages to be among his most raw and direct and his most adventurous at the same time! There's an almost low fi approach to the production, as well as an emphasis on drums, percussion and keys that keeps it all cohesive, but the range of styles he rolls in and out while doing that is pretty incredible! Hazy, raw mood funk, bits of South American and other points global influenced guitar and percussion, trippier keys and most always a sinister bass groove. The persona is low less mysterious than ever, but the leftfield funk sound is as impressive as ever! Includes "Giraffe Crack", "Laughing Jockey", "Miles Chillin", "Truth Seekin", "Nina", "Truch Seekin", "Drunk Socks", "Verbal Headlock" and more.

Amazing work from the 70s Nigerian scene – and one of the few female funk records to come out of Africa back in the days! The Lijadu Sisters have a groove that's unlike anything else we've ever heard before – partly Afro Funk, but often changed up a lot in really weird ways – rhythms that get a bit complicated, yet still have a straight ahead punch – taken to new areas by the playful back/forth singing style of the sisters! Their vocals are amazing, sweet, but kind of eerie at times too – almost reminiscent of ESG in the early days – and with a similar style that's infectious right from the start! The whole thing's essential work from an overlooked 70s Afro Funk act – and titles include "Danger", "Cashing In", "Bobby", "Life's Gone Down Low", and "Amebo".

Timeless, soulful hip hop from DC via Brooklyn DJ/Producer/MC Quartermaine – representing Kev Brown's Low Budget Crew! Redef has been putting out top quality underground hip hop for a while now – and this full length is another win! Honest, real and relatable lyricism backed by soulful beatcraft. Additional production by Kev Brown, Joc Max and Ken Wood. Titles include "Ducats" feat Kid Funk, "Beef And Broccoli", "Me All Day (Nothin')", "Get Me Down", "Introspection", "Q's Lament", "$oul For $ale", "War Of The Roses" and "Giving Up".

The greatest album to date from Sugarman 3 – one of the funkiest combos of the past 50 years! The group's organ/sax sound has never sounded so great – and it's pumped up even further here from some added guest instrumentation, including drums from Bernard Purdie, plus vocals on a number of cuts from deep funk legends Lee Fields, Charles Bradley, and Naomi Davis. The whole thing's as funky as funky can be – the kind of a record that would be selling for $300 if it came out in the 70s, and which is even nicer to have at a low everyday price! Titles include "Shot Down", "Modern Jive", "Funky So & So", "Take It As It Come", "Pure Cane", "Promised Land", "Country Girl", "La Culebra", "Down To It", "Honey Wagon", and "Bosco's Blues".

A pretty incredible compilation of Cambodia Rock – the best one we've come across – classic original Khmer Rock from scene pioneer Sinn Sisamouth and many more! The set as an effort to present this fun, groovy and yes, spectacular Cambodian Rock as it was originally heard by the people in its pre-Pol Pot heyday – before the original vinyl releases were hidden away and eventually circulated via low quality cassette bootlegs – and it sounds great! Awesome stuff all around, much of it with a raw garage psych vibe with fuzzed out guitars, heavy drums, woozy organ and male & female lead vocals – always with a groovy rhythm. Includes "Do You No Wrong Again" by Thra Kha Band, "Khnyom Jah Karake" by Tet Somnang & Meas Samon, "Pros Chang Reiy" and "Pail Loung Rom (Go To Dance)" by Pan Ron, "Jet Snaeh Theang Nov" and "Yuvachon Yuvatey Samai Tmai (New Generation Youth" by Sinn Sisamouth & Ros Dereysothea, "Duang Netra" and "Satt Thee Thuy" by Sinn Sisamouth, "Bong Rau Roub Khnyom" by Ros Sereysothea, "Youm Os Tirk Pnake" by Pov Vannary and more. 19 tracks on 2LPs in a nice gatefold sleeve with fairly extensive notes on the back cover and inside the gatefold.

A classic 2LP collection of Billie's older work for Columbia – early sides produced by John Hammond in the late 30s and early 40s. Titles include "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie", "Am I Blue", "God Bless The Child", "Mandy Is Two", "It's The Same Old Story", "I Hear Music", "I'm In A Low Down Groove", "Love Me Or Leave Me", "Gloomy Sunday", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along".

More of a soul album than a jazz album – and a stripped-down mellow set that has Les singing and playing keyboards with a quartet that includes Miroslaw Kudykowski on guitar. Cuts include "Everywhere I Go, People Ask Me a Question", "Woman, Come Home", "I've Been Thinking About My Problems", and "You Little Cheat". Also includes the cut "I'm A Liberated Woman", which features Paul Humphrey on drums.

Almost an underground groove supergroup – given that the set features work from Earl Zinger (Rob Gallagher of Galliano) at the helm, production from 2 Banks Of 4, vocals from Valerie Etienne, and funky rhythms from Shawn Lee! The combination of talents come together here in a very new way – with a style that's much grittier and earlier than before, although still pretty darn groovy overall – almost putting a raspy old school touch on a scene that's definitely matured on its own, and may well be old enough to lay claim to the rootsy sound of this set! Rob's songwriting has definitely matured, and at some of the best moments, there's almost a British Tom Waits-y kind of quality to the set. Titles include "Below Sea Level", "Burial Blues", "Whip Of The Wind", "Laxfield Blasphemy", "Velvets Eleven", "Margaret Catchpole", and "Foggy Dew".

Unreleased soul from Vince Broomfield – a singer and saxophone player with a warm and smooth style! The work here is all from private recordings of the late 80s and early 90s, and has a sound that echoes mainstream R&B of the period, but which is served up in a much more stripped-down approach overall – one that offers up some nice indie elements that help keep things fresh, especially on the album's mellow steppers! All tracks are original – and titles include "My Girl", "I've Been Watching You", "She's Gone", "I've Got You Back", "Just What The Doctor Ordered", and "Rain Rain Go Away".

An oft-overlooked funky soul gem from the incredible Roy Ayers – taking turns with both uptempo material and more smoothed out soul sounds – all done with Roy's trademark jazzy approach to the dancefloor! No Stranger To Love is a sly, and often funky set that deserves to be mentioned with his more famous dancefloor ready work of the late 70s – and if it gets an extra point two for the incredibly cool cover photo, the slow burning grooves more than deliver on the promise! The album does a really nice job of rolling out both the sultry jazzy soul and the funkier Ayers modes, with sweet strings in spots, Roy's incomparable vibes, bass and keyboard grooving, and vocals that set the mood for both the slow jams and the funky stuff! Includes the extended mellow number "Don't Let Our Love Slip Away", one of Roy's better downtempo moments, plus great stuff like "Don't Stop The Feeling", plus "What You Won't Do For Love", "No Stranger To Love/Want You", "Shack Up, Pack Up, It's Up (When I'm Gone)", "Don't Hide Your Love".

Quite possibly the greatest moment ever for Burt Bacharach – and that's saying a heck of a lot, considering the greatness of all of his work! The record's a slightly-overlooked gem from Burt's 70s years – a record that steps off the compressed sophistication of his best 60s work for A&M, but pushes things slightly into even more adult territory – a space that's beyond simple instrumental pop, and which features complicated rhythms, amazing songwriting, and a batch of tunes so great, you'll be coming back to this one for years to come! The record leads off with the sublime "Something Big", a building vocal number that always sends chills down our spine – then follows with the skittish rhythm of "Monterey Peninsula", almost drum and bass at times! Even the mellower tracks are great – somewhat soulful, and always touched with unusual phrasings, timings, or jazzy changes that are simply mindblowing. Other tracks include "The Balance of Nature", "Lost Horizon", "Walk The Way You Talk", "Reflections", "Long Ago Tomorrow", and "I Might Frighten Her Away".

A raw raw party from Richard Berry & The Soul Searchers – caught live at HD Hover Century Restaurant, a place so funky, the food must have jumped off the table! The album's a really unusual one, even for the time – as Berry and the group are captured in a live small club setting, in a way that just lets the tunes roll out as if you were catching the group in person – freewheeling, open-ended, and with an extended grooving quality that even surpasses the energy of the best funky 45s of the time! Berry's got a mighty power at the helm – singing, talking, and calling out the tunes with a real sense of funky majesty – while the small combo really jams behind him on percussion and sax, and a trio of lovely ladies come in to help out on the choruses from time to time. The album features a side-long version of "Down Here On The Ground" that's easily the most mindblowing take we've ever heard on the track – as Berry stretches the thing out with Isaac Hayes-like intensity, and really turns the tune on its ear! Other tracks include the heavy-jamming "Wild Berry", plus "Spread Your Love" and "Give Her All The Love I Got".

A dream band indeed – as the set features a cast of excellent players who manage to come together tightly as a unit, then break out in really strong and hard-blown solos! Even by a "pulled together for this jam session by the record label"-type group there's a swinging style firmly in place – incredible tightness, but a real respect for the soloists – and a power to kick it louder and larger than even in a small group setting. Players include Herb Geller, Al Cohn, Hank Jones, Budd Johnson, and Ernie Wilkins – and titles on this first volume include "Maynard The Fox", "The Wailing Boat", "Somebody Wants Me Down There", "Little Girl Kimbi", and "Button Nose".

A fantastic record – one of Birdsong's rare early ones, with a messed-up approach to funk that he rarely matched again! The album was cut at the time Birdsong was working with Roy Ayers – but it was produced by Birdsong himself, and he also handled all the keyboards on the set. The group's a stripped-down combo, without the slicker sound of some of his later work – and there's a fuzzy funk approach to most of the best tracks, with lots of guitar and bass. Titles include "If I Ever", "Any Color", "Rising Sign (Funky)", "Flow Through My Heart", "Turn Around Hate (Communicate)", "I Love You Michelle", "Tune From Callicoon", and "Last Exit Before The Toll".

The start of a tremendous run from Blue Magic – easily one of the greatest harmony groups of the 70s, a quintet we'd place in a rare class with heavy hitters like The Stylistics or The Moments! The album's smooth and sweet, but never slick – perfectly arranged by the great Norman Harris, who makes the vocals sound equally great on mellow tracks and uptempo numbers – setting a new Philly standard with the album, and one that few other groups could match so well! Every piece of the core 70s Philly harmony sound is in place here – from the near-perfect (but wonderfully human) vocals of the group, to the full yet subtle backings by Sigma players who include Vince Montana, Earl Young, Bobby Eli, and Harris himself – and if you've ever needed a record to prove the genius of the east coast harmony sound, this may well be it! Titles include "Look Me Up", "What's Come Over Me", "Tear It Down", "Sideshow", "Stop To Start", "Welcome To The Club", and "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely".

A righteous bit of soul – one of the only non-jazz albums we've seen on the Muse label, and a really great session that reminds us of work by Alice Clark and Esther Marrow – two other overlooked 70s soul singers who also recorded for jazz labels! Rickie's got a deep soul approach to the vocals that's nicely inflected with jazzy work by players that include Tom Malone, Kalaparusha, Buddy Terry, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – the last of whom arranged and conducted the backings, and gives the album a full-on and progressive feel. Rickie's vocals have lots of nice gentle tones, making for some sweet little numbers that sparkle nicely – titles that include "Baby Won't You Stay", "To Be Needed", "In A Little While", "At The Clinic", "What Could It Be", and "I Won't See Yesterday".

The classic Scott La Rock tribute album – with BDP classics and remixes – originally issued as a 2LP set that was put together following the South Bronx-repping hip hop pioneer's shooting death. Alternate versions, remixes and BDP medley's from their most classic late 80s period. 15 tracks in all. Includes "Advance", "D Nice Rocks The House", "Red Alert (Criminal Minded)", 'Doc Mix (Criminal Minded)", "Super Hoe #4", "Word From Our Sponsor #8", "BDP Medley #5", "Poetry" (#s 1, 2 & 3)" and lots more!

Pure greatness from Brand Nubian at their early best! The Nubes' have made a handful of solid-to-great albums, but none could top this essential debut. Grand Puba, Sadat X and Lord Jamar are on point with the politicized rhymes over classic early 90s jazzed up, funky beats, built from now well known breaks – and truly raising the bar for classic east coast production. With the classics "All For One", "Slow Down", "Drop The Bomb", "Concerto In X Minor", and 2 mixes of "Wake Up" (Stimulated Dummies mix and the penultimate reprise), plus "Who Can Get Busy Like This Man. . .", "Ragtime", "To The Right", "Dance To My Ministry", "Step To The Rear", "Try To Do Me", "Grand Puba, Positive & LG" and "Dedication".

No splashdown here – as Breakwater are every bit as soaringly soulful as they were on their debut set! The groove here is that perfect blend of jazz and soul that only a few groups in the 70s really got right – maybe Pleasure, or The Blackbyrds – and most certainly Breakwater, who were one of the reigning champions of the scene! Rhythms are often upbeat, but not in a disco or club-oriented way – and the instrumentation is tight, but never slick or smooth – always nicely funky with a nice little crackle, even on the mellow cuts – in a way that's opened up this album to new audiences for many years. This set's got a nice bit of moog that wasn't on the group's first – used almost in Mizell-like to further enhance the sound – and titles include the classics "Say You Love Me Girl", "Let Love In", "Time", and "The One In My Dreams". Great stuff, and with a really beautiful vibe!

An overlooked killer from Brick – the group's fourth album, but every bit as tight and funkier as earlier sets! Brick's Atlanta-bred groove is very much in place here – that lean, mean approach to funk that made them a standout right from the get-go – almost setting the scene for the stripped-down modes that so many other groups would follow well into the 80s! That tighter sound lets the group really hit a strongly soulful focus here – serving up some of their best vocals to date, and reminding us that some of the best mainstream funk groups always had a strong ability to harmonize over their grooves. Titles include "Push Push", "Get Started", "All The Way", "Waiting On You", "Free", "Sweet Lips", and "Let Me Make You Happy".

Raw, original instrumental funk from The Cactus Channel – who are coming straight outta Melbourne – and they're barely outta high school! It's kind of stunning that a group as youthful as this one is delivering such a finely-honed set of rave-up funk! It's largely done in the 70s action soundtrack and psych funk modes – recorded to analog for an authentic feel – with heavy drums, solid guitar and bass, a five piece horn section and lots of organ. There's some slower-cooking groovers, too, leaving space for some sharp solos. We really need to visit Australia and study whatever it is down there that's inspiring such a wealth of modern funk! Includes "Emanuel Ciccolini", "The Colour Of Don Don", "Budokan", "Tom Has Ideas", "Level Up", "Boss Cat", "Jungle Run", "Under The Birdcage" and "Hot Teeth".

One of the best albums that Terry Callier ever recorded – and a masterpiece of the baroque soul crossover style that was going down at the Chess/Cadet label at the time! Terry's own folksy singing and playing would be more than enough to make this record great – but it's given an amazing edge by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney, who create these floating pillows of sound and washes of jazzy colors that fit Terry's moods perfectly, and really expand the emotional intensity of the songs. At the time of this release, the Chess empire was falling apart – but the forces that be put a great last push into the record, and Terry's backed by superb work from Chicago studio giants like Phil Upchurch, Don Myrick, Art Hoyle, Bobby Christian, Cleveland Eaton, Louis Satterfield, and Evans and Stepney themselves! Every track is a wonder, and titles include "Alley-Wind Song" , "Can't Catch the Trane", "Bowlin' Green", and "Until Tomorrow".

With Jeannie Cheatham on vocals and piano, Jimmy on trombone, Dinky Morris on tenor and baritone, Snooky Young on trumpet, and Curtis Peagler on alto and tenor. Titles include "Permanent Solution", "Daddy O", "Goin Down Slow", "Detour Ahead", and "Homeward Bound".

Ten years since his underground Headphone Masterpiece and Cody Chesnutt is finally back with a proper follow up – one that has a more fully-fleshed out production – and it's pretty damn great! There's some striking differences in approach, but thankfully, the idiosyncratic creative bent remains! Where Headphones Masterpiece was a mind-bogglingly ambitious low fi bedroom production, this one was at least partially recorded at Willie Mitchell's legendary Royal Studios in Memphis, with a great group of studio musicians. This one is also more focused – and features a tight batch of 12 songs – as opposed to the sprawling double album debut. Cody's ear for classic southern soul craft informs this one – but his raw lyricism and great voice are still the focus, and that ultimately makes it another near-classic! We hope it won't take 10 years to make another record, but we're sure glad we finally got this one! Includes "'Til I Met Thee", "I've Been Life", "That's Still Mama", "Don't Follow Me", "Everybody's Brother", "Love Is More Than A Wedding Day", "Under The Spell Of The Handout", "Don't Wanna Go The Other Way", "Where Is All The Money Going", "Scroll Call" and more.

A killer album of 70s New Orleans funk! Chocolate Milk were an amazing funk group in their best moments – and this album is certainly one of those moments – a blistering batch of tracks that set a whole new style for the Crescent City scene, and which showed that producers Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn could easily hit the hipper notes of the 70s! There's a tight rhythmic sound at the core of most numbers, but expanded instrumentation over the top – bits of spacey electrics or jazzier electronics that never would have shown up in Sansu records of years back, but which show that with the right group, New Orleans funk could easily take on the hippest styles going down on both coasts! The title cut, "Action Speaks Louder Than Words", is a slow funk classic – and the record also includes the incredible electronic-tinged "Time Machine", a perpetual favorite these days. Other nice tracks include "Pretty Pimpin' Willie" and "Ain't Nothin' But a Thing". Arguably the band's best album ever!

A great mix of modes – and a set that represents a real turning point in the career of Otis Clay! The rougher edges of Clay's Chicago soul are warmed up here substantially by producer Willie Mitchell – bubbling up some Memphis soul for Otis, in a style that's similar to some of his backings for other singers on the Hi Records label – in a style that makes for a great step forward from Clay's singles of the 60s! The shift is a big one – the sort that helped make Otis one of the standout singers of his generation – really knocking it out of the park on tracks that include "House Ain't A Home", "Slow & Easy", "Born To Be With You", "Home Is Where The Heart Is", "Pussy Footing Around", and "Too Much Mystery".

Rare Afro Rock from Nigeria – a really cool fusion of African funk and dexterous guitar – served up with plenty of hypnotic touches! Although we've dug their tracks on compilations over the years, we've never been lucky enough to hear a full album by Colomach – and are blown away at the range of sounds the group deliver on this rare gem from the 70s! Tracks range from Sahel rock with electric guitar over rumbling bass and percussion, to grooves centered around some sweet and spare acoustic guitar – often touched with a bit of flute and emotive vocals as well. Production is top shelf too – given that the set was recorded by EMI in Nigeria – and titles include "Enoviyin", "Ottoto Shamoleda", "Cotocun Gba Gounke", "Bernadetta", "Sweet Sounds from Colomachi", "K Assa Kpa Sama Kpa", "Pipan", "Yebo Blues", and "Sonorites Sahelienne".

Great grooves from Debo Band – a contemporary combo, but one who's steeped in older Ethiopian modes – particularly the best 70s sounds inspired by artists like Mulatu, Mohammad Ahmed, and Tilahun Gessesse! The album may well be the funkiest set ever issued by Sub Pop – and has a hard-rolling power that rivals classic sounds you might hear on the Ethiopiques series – sent home especially well by the sax lines of Danny Mekonnen, and amazing vocals of Bruck Tesfaye – an artist who's really got his sound just right! Other instrumentation is right on the money, with some occasional touches of funkier elements – but usually just the right sort of classic Ethiopiano percussion, horns, and strings to make the music come out beautifully. Titles include "And Lay", "Asha Gedawo", "Habesha", "Abassel", "DC Flower", "Not Just A Song", "Ney Ney Weleba", and "Akale Wube".

The amazing second album from Deep Jazz – and every bit as spiritual and soulful as the first! These guys really blew us away with their debut, and we're loving them even more this time around – and can honestly say that they're one of the few contemporary combos to ever get our favorite sounds of the 70s just right – that magical music that came out on labels like Strata East and other small indies of the time – that post-Coltrane generation when musicians really stretched their skills to the heavens in search of new sounds! The arrangements, production, and execution here are wonderful – with no modern tricks or gimmicks to get in the way at all – and in addition to great warm acoustic bass from group leader Jerker Kluge, the set also features alto, tenor, flute, bass clarinet, and piano – plus some great Alice Coltrane-like harp, sweet percussion, and even female vocals on a few cuts. Titles include the great originals "The Meeting", "Movement", and "Don't Get Drowned" – plus great versions of "Little Sunflower" and "Spirits Up Above".

The third album in an amazing early run from The Delfonics – the kind of work that set a whole new standard for group soul in the 70s! A number of the tracks here had already risen to fame before the album's release as singles – and these are mixed with some additional tracks that are woven together in a near-perfect symphony of sound! The mighty Thom Bell arranged most of the numbers here – save for 2 by Anthony Dorsey – and the group's heavenly harmonies are in amazing form on both mellow ballads and a few more righteous numbers. Titles include "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", "Funny Feeling", "Over & Over", "Baby I Love You", "When You Get Right Down To It", "Delfonics Theme", "Trying To Make A Fool Of Me", "I Gave To You", "Down Is Up Up Is Down", and "Think About Me".

The laidback classic! The Digables certainly weren't the first hip hop group to rely upon cooled out jazzy grooves for the backbone of their sound, but they really brought it home with a hugely endearing and long enduring vibe – and this is their masterpiece! All these years later, Blowout Comb is still pure gold. Loads of tripped out arrangements on live instruments – which is a huge step for the group after their largely sampled debut – and layer upon layer of groovy vocals in addition to the easy rhymes of Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug. Also includes an appearance by Jeru! Probably the catchiest jazz-rap fusion record of all time! Tracks include "The May 4th Movement Starring Doodlebug", "Black Ego", "Dog It", "Jettin", "Borough Check", "Highing Fly", "Dial 7", "The Art Of Easing", "K.B.'s Alley", "Graffiti", "Blowing Down", "9th Wonder", and "For Corners".

Quite possibly the greatest record ever from Clifton Dyson – a solo effort that has him stepping away from his Dyson's Faces group, and emerging as a heck of a great singer on his own! The album's got a warm modern soul feel throughout – much more mid 70s indie than you'd guess from the date on the record – and every aspect of the record is great – from the vocals to the instrumentation to the tight production on the record – a sound that's professional, and really a cut above the usual effort of this type. Al Johnson and Rodney Brown helped on arrangements – and titles include the extended groover "Slow Your Body Down", which takes up all of side one – plus "Hypnotize", "I'm Giving Up", and "So Lonely".

Ambient Brian Eno at its best – a contemporary record, but one that feels like it could have been released right after Music For Airports – given the overall sound! Tunes are very spare and spacious – listed with geometric images for titles on the back cover, right out of Eno's early Ambient series for EG – and served up with these slow-moving sounds that are a mix of electric and acoustic elements – including slight use of moog and violin. Really great stuff – the kind of record that really restores our faith in Eno!

A beautiful little live album from Jose Feliciano – recorded in London at the end of the 60s, with a sound that's often more stripped down than his studio work of the time! Jose's on vocals and guitar, backed by only a bit of bass and percussion – so the record's almost got the intimacy of a solo effort, which is quite astounding – given the obvious size of the concert setting! The double-length nature of the record allows Jose to stretch out a bit more than usual – and take on a nice variety of material that really show his growing talents at the time. Titles include "High Heel Sneakers", "Mama Don't Allow It", "La Entrada De Bilboa", "The Comedy Bit", "Malaguena", "No Dogs Allowed", "Day Tripper", "Black Orpheus Medley", "California Dreamin", "Light My Fire", "Day In the Life", and "El Voh".

Nice bit of obscure modern soul produced by Phillip Bailey, and with a mid 70s Earth, Wind & Fire feel to it. Includes a great track called "I'll Keep A Light In My Window", which has a beautifully mellow jazzy groove, and which is on a par with anything Maurice White was laying down in the mid-tempo mode in the 70s. Other titles include "Smile", "Spirit Of Love", "Second Coming", and "Say You Do".

The great K Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas self-titled set from 1976 – trailblazing work that helped cement Frimpong's legend! The singer is backed on it by the group Vis-a-Vis, as he would be on the equally great and similarly titled album from the following year, appearing as his Cubano Fiestas. The opening track, "Kyenkyen Bi Adi M'Awu" is positively revelatory, and pretty much the starting point for Frimpong discovery and fandom for many of us. Just for that, the full album can be considered something of a lost treasure, so it's wonderful to be able to say that it's just as great from beginning-to-end! Soul shaking lead and chorus vocals, funky drums and keyboards, feverish rhythms, guitar, percussion, sax and some flute. Other tracks include "Gyae Mensu", "Yaw Barimah", "Susu Ne Won Nka", "Baabi A Obi Awuo", "Afe Nkyere Ba", "Obi Nnim" and "Koforidua Nsuo".

A beautiful bit of lost Getz from the 60s – a record of incredible depth that's somehow gotten lost in the shuffle of time! The album has Stan playing at Tanglewood with a core group that includes Gary Burton, Jim Hall, Steve Swallow, and Roy Haynes, plus musical backings by the Boston Pops – conducted by Arthur Fiedler in a style that's somehow without any of the hoke of his other recordings of the time, and which manages to give Stan some of the best "with orchestra" backings he's ever gotten! There's none of the overwrought modernism of some of the other Getz/orchestra collaborations that we never seem to like as much – and Stan's in incredible Spring Rain-like tone on the whole thing – blowing magically through both the lush and grooving numbers alike! Titles include "Tanglewood Concerto", "Where Do You Go", "Three Ballads For Stan", "A Song After Sundown", and a great orchestral take on "Girl From Ipanema".

One of the instant classic Wu Tang solo projects – Ghostface Killah's essential, early peak Ironman – and a a record that stands strongly among the best hip hop albums of the its era! Produced by The RZA at a point in which it seemed there was little he could do wrong. An absolute high water mark for Ghostface and the entire Wu Tang empire. Titles include "Winter Warz", "Daytona 500", "Motherless Child", "Soul Controller", "Wildflower", "Poisonous Darts", "Fish", "Camay", "Black Jesus", "The Faster Blade", "260", "Assassination Day", "Box In Hand", "After The Smoke Is Clear" and "All That I Got Is You".

Massively mellow funk – played by a cool Chicago trio that's heavy on the electric keys! The group's led by the team of keyboardist Gregory Bibb and guitarist James Norris – with the former working through a set of tasty keys that include Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and farfisa! Rhythms are lean, laidback, and nicely stripped-down – funky, but chilled out – in a kind of a groove that was years ahead of its time, and which is now only finally getting its due. There's some really heavy drums on the best cuts – hard, but with rhythms that are slightly off-kilter, in a way that makes for a really refreshing groove, even when the group's covering work by other artists. The whole thing's instrumental – with the original tracks "Brother Marcus" and "Changing Things" – plus great covers of "Love & Happiness", "Shaft", and a great version of "Ain't No Sunshine". Nice laidback funk, with a super-dope sound that's as a hip as the cover!

An early killer from Johnny Griffin – a stripped-down quartet session for Blue Note, done in a format that really gave him plenty of room to open up! The rhythm section is a powerful trio led by Sonny Clark on piano, and featuring bassist Paul Chambers alongside the obscure drummer Kenny Dennis – but it's Griff's tone and conception that dominates the set – really blowing in a style that combines the soulful and the modern with incredible spontaneity, all wrapped up in a beautiful early Andy Warhol cover! Tracks are all longish, and titles include "The Congregation", "Latin Quarter", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "Main Spring".

The first full length collaboration between blues, soul and rock slide guitar eclecticist Ben Harper and harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite – and it's win for both – with a vibe that's rooted in many traditions, but feels right at home in both Harper's and Musselwhite's wheelhouses. We expected a blues & soul covers set when we first heard that this project was in the works – and while the prospect of these 2 fellows working together on the classic Americana songbook sounds like a pretty good idea to us – we're actually all the more impressed with this all originals take on classic styled craft. A bit of blues and blues rock, a bit of gospel, and a bit of southern styled folk soul – and a bunch of great songs! It's a full band set up for the most part, too, as opposed to a spare duos set – and the titles include "Don't Look Twice", "I'm In I'm Out And I'm Gone", "We Can't End This Way", "You Found Another Lover (I Lost Another Friend), "I Ride At Dawn", "Get Up!", "She Got Kick", "Blood Side Out" and "All That Matters Now".

An excellent batch of rare material by vocalist Johnny Hartman, and a very strong set of tracks that shows a side of his work that's often ignored! Usually, Hartman gets cited for his slow, moody, syrupy sound – such as that which he used in his classic recordings with Coltrane. However, we really dig the side that's exposed on this album – the shorter, livelier, more uptempo jazz numbers, done with a swing that you don't normally get with Johnny, and proof that he really was a tremendously versatile singer! Arrangements are by Gerald Wilson, and titles include "Fools Rush In", "Down In The Depths", "Bidin' My Time", "The More I See You", "Once In A While", and "Almost Like Being In Love".

Insanely wonderful music from Andrew Hill – a lean, stripped-down session that has Hill working at his firey best – in a space that's somewhere between the "new thing" recordings of Jackie McLean, and the brooding brilliance of Andrew's later Smokestack session! The group here has some key figures fleshing out the sound – a young Joe Henderson, blowing tenor with a very edgey quality – the very versatile Richard Davis on bass – and the great Roy Haynes on drums, very much at his most fluid interpretation of rhythm! The whole set's pretty darn great – one of the more mindblowing Blue Notes you'll ever hope to buy – and tracks include "Pumpkin", "Subterfuge", "Cantarnos", and "McNeil Island".

A funky holy grail – one of the rarest of the rare, and the only album ever cut by funky guitarist Carl "Sherlock" Holmes! Carl's work on the guitar is incredible – fast riffing and jazzy, with a style that's dirtier and messier than some of his 70s jazz funk contemporaries, but which also lays back on a few tracks so that Carl can deliver a sweetly soulful vocal. The album's a real blend of styles, all handled pretty darn well – from the hard funk of "Black Bag" and "Investigation", to the Latin jamming of "Modesa", the fast grooving of "Get Down Philly Town", and the mellow soul of "Think It Over" and "Your Game". Great stuff – and a real treat to finally have reissued!

John Lee Hooker takes a step or two into the bluesy soul sound of the early 60s on this sweet set on Vee Jay – while style flaunting his true blues pedigree really, really well! The grit of his voice is as heavily emotive and unshakable as ever – backed by a crack combo on drums, guitar, bass and organ – with sweet sweet backing vocals that are supposedly the Vandellas (sure does sound like it.) Includes "San Francisco", "Take A Look At Yourself", "Send Me Your Pillow", "She Shot Me Down", "Big Soul", "Good Rocking Mama", "No One Told Me" and "Onions".

A Texas tenor takes on one of Chicago's mightiest reedmen! Worth it for the presence of Freeman alone (only a handful of recordings exist of the man), this live date from '78 features Gator and Von fronting a heavy, heavy band with Carl Wilson, Yusef Ali, and Joe(as in "Boogaloo") Jones. Screamin' shouts and bluesy honks drive numbers like "Pow!" and "Troubled Times", while the 2 turn down the flame and burn slowly on ballads like "Shadow of Your Smile". The real highlight, though, is a great take on "The Man I Love", done club-style, using the track as a perfect platform for both players to riff in bop-heavy style!

Acoustic sounds from two players who made their mark during the fusion generation – and a wonderful illustration that at their core, both Bob James and David Sanborn are pretty darn great jazz musicians! The album's got a laidback vibe that's wonderful – these flowing lines on acoustic piano from James, mixed with Sanborn's well-blown alto and soprano sax solos – moving with this mellow groove that's never sleepy, and certainly never cheesy in a commercial way – just a great late night sort of mode with a surprisingly classic feel. The quartet also features Steve Gadd on drums and James Genus on bass – both working at a well-matched pace with the leaders – and titles include "Geste Humain", "You Better Not Go To College", "Maputo", "Deep In The Weeds", and "Genevieve".

The incredible drums and Rhodes-heavy jazz dance album from composer Thom Janusz – made in collaboration with NYC dancer, choreographer and company leader Ronn Forella – possibly the funkest, best and hardest-to-find album ever released by the Hoctor label! Ostensibly a hip 70s dance instruction set composed by Janusz for Forella – a frequent collaborator who also worked with Bob Fosse (in case the cover photo doesn't make that clear) – the music manages to transcend the niche to say the very least! It's a killer jazz funk album in it's own right. The groove is massive in spots and has a slower cooking, instrumental soul style in others – fantastic drums and percussion, keys that range from thickly-layered to astral, some great wah wah guitar grooving and funky bass lines throughout. We knew this record by reputation only over the years – it's such a joy to actually spend some time with it and hear how richly earned that rep is! Includes "Memories Of Georgia", "Mithra Plane 2", "Hippo Mancy", "Sculptures", "Crystals" (the drum breaks heavy standout) and "Wild And Wonderful".

A massive set from Al Jarreau – a set that gave the singer one of his smoothest hits of all time, yet still kept him very firmly in the sort of sophisticated territory that set him apart from most of his contemporaries! The sound here is often a lot more understated than you'd expect – mellow jazz, with light instrumentation, and less of the too-commercial modes that other singers were being hung with at the time – an approach that preserves all the wonderful lightness in Al's vocals – that mix of jazzy scatting roots and warmly flowing soul that makes most of the early Jarreau albums well worth tracking down. The set leads off with the classic "Mornin" – and other cuts include "I Will Be Here For You", "Step By Step", "Black & Blues", "Not Like This", "Love Is Waiting", and "Trouble In Paradise".

One of the greatest records we've ever heard from Jazzanova – a set that really returns the group to their roots, and features live funk instrumentation, and ultra-soulful vocals from singer Paul Randolph! The sound is unlike anything Jazzanova's done in the past – even tighter, and more soulful than their excellent Of All The Things album – with a lean groove that's light years away from some of their too-electric moments from a decade ago! A number of tunes here are tracks from the group's more electronic years, but redone with much warmer live instrumentation –and the evolution in the music is mindblowing, with stunning results – a record filled with instant classics – as funky drums mix with jazzy horns, and set up a perfect vibe for the complex yet soulful sound of Randolph's vocals. Titles include "Little Bird", "Flashback", "No Use", "Lucky Girl", "I Human", "Let Me Show Ya", "Theme From Belle Et Fou", "Fedime's Flight", and "Boom Clicky Boom Klack".

An incredible album – quite possibly our favorite record by the JBs, ever! The set starts with a wonderful conversational bit – rapping and musing on the idea of "Damn Right, I Am Somebody" – showing the group in a political and righteous mode for the first time ever. The grooves then kick in – with the same heavy funk as on earlier records, but also a nice nod towards experimental production – from strange fade ups and fade downs, to stark time and rhythm changes, and even bits of electronics used to create some very cool moments in the grooves! The whole thing's as dead funky as can be, and is stuffed with insane classics like "Blow Your Head", "Same Beat", "Damn Right I am Somebody", "I'm Payin' Taxes, What am I Buyin'", and a great cover of Marvin Gaye's "You Sure Love to Ball"!

The second album from Chicago's great raw soul torch carriers JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound – their debut for Bloodshot, and a record that's gonna catapult them to the forefront of the live soul scene, in the Chi and everywhere else! The group's proved over the past couple years, via their raw, yet propellant debut album, some great singles, and furious live show schedule, that they're poised to deliver in a bigger way. On Want More they do that and, uh. . .a bit more! JC's a rare singer who can both shout out in a gritty funk mode and coo with charisma on slower soul anthems, and the group delivers on both fronts, too. Producer Jimmy Sutton captures them perfectly. The core group features Billy Bungeroth on guitar, Kevin Marks on drums & percussion and Ben Taylor on bass. Includes "Want More", "Everything Will Be Fine", "I Got High", their great cover of "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", "Baaadnews", "I Can See Everything", "Sister Ray Charles", "Awake" and more.

One of Grace Jones' best albums – recorded at a point when she was really beginning to stretch the boundaries of club music, crossing over with the early 80s post-punk/post-disco crowd through a melange of sounds that was all her own. The oveblown diva mode of her disco years is gone by this point – and in its place is a wonderfully stripped down sound that bubbles with influences from reggae, post-punk, and elsewhere! The set was recorded in Nassau, with rhythm from Sly, Robbie, and Wally Badarou – and titles include a fair bit of original numbers penned with Barry Reynolds. Tracks include "Nipple To The Bottle", "My Jamaican Guy", "The Apple Stretching", "Cry Now, Laugh Later", and "Inspiration".

The long-anticipated second album from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings is a stunner – undoubtedly stronger than the group's fantastic debut – and a record that not only transcends the late model funk revival genre, but stands on footing as solid as the best hard funky soul of the late 60s and early 70s! If you're expecting a rehash of the heavy funk jams that burned on the Dap Dippin' album you won't be disappointed, but get ready for a deep, natural (hence the title) soulfulness that not only caught us off guard, but really forms the big, hard-beating heart of the album. The frothing, frenetic funk is as tight as ever, and in spots just as furious, but the attention to songcraft this time out is just as searing and indelible. The eight piece Dap Kings continue to be the best band in the land – with El Michels on baritone sax, Neal Sugarman on tenor, Homer Steinweiss on drums, not-so-secret weapon Bosco Mann on bass, vibes and piano. Guest appearances include fellow Daptone powerhouse vocalist Lee Fields on the the duet "Stranded In Your Love", and strings courtesy of the Bushwick Philharmonic, but make no mistake, this is the band's album. Amazing stuff from in indispensable group – an album that'll keep spinning in our circles for as many years as the great albums by the gritty soul forefathers do! Tracks include "How Do I Let A Good Man Down?", "Natural Born Lover", "My Man Is A Mean Man", a soulful reading of Woodie Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land", "Your Thing Is A Drag", "Fish In A Dish" and "All Over Again".

We're always big fans of Bev Kelly's work, but this album is way hipper than the usual vocal album of its type from the time – thanks to a sweet little lineup that features Pony Poindexter on alto sax and Flip Nunez on piano! The presence of Poindexter's horn is always a treat, on the handful of smaller group sides he cut from this time – and Nunez's piano lines have an inherently rhythmic groove that comes out even on the mellower numbers – which often are somewhat spacious, but stepping along with a gentle groove underneath Kelly's fantastic vocals. Part of the credit for this groove goes to Johnny Allen, whose work on bass is great – and the group's completed by the drums of Tony Johnson, who's a bit more down in the mix. Titles include "Long Ago & Far Away", "My Foolish Heart", "Night & Day", "Just Friends", "Love Letters", "This Is Always", and "My Funny Valentine".

Classic mid 70s dub – purportedly with King Tubby handling the controls on one side, and Lee Perry on the other – and Winston Edwards and the Natty Locks laying down the unstoppable backing tracks! The King Tubby side is particularly heavy – with the bass and percussion rumbling so strong underneath some sweetly soulful bits of horn and guitar – straight-up excellent mid 70s dubs! The purported Upsetter side isn't as heavy in mood or tricked out – but it's still pretty great – and in a way that really allows the Natty Dread backdrops to stand up strongly in their own light. With "Blood Of Africa", "Wood Roots", "Luke Lane Rock", "People From The Grass Roots", "Crime Wave" and "No Justice For The Poor".

The roots of The Knack – and some really amazing tracks that were recorded years before their famous debut on Capitol! The sound here is great and gritty – mostly just Doug Feiger and Berton Averre working out tunes in the studio – using guitar and bass, and serving up the vocals with a nicely sneering style! Even more amazing is that most of these tunes were recorded in 1973 and 1975 – yet already show the pair's tremendous ear for a tight riff and unstoppable hook – that core essence of everything we love about The Knack – but with an even rawer feel too. Titles include "Who'll Set You Down", "Little Lies", "Flower My Fate", "Weiss On Rye", "Have A Heart", "Corporation Shuffle", "Get On The Plane", "Lazer Days", and "Good Girls Don't".

A pivotal album in the career of Kool & The Gang! This album has the band operating at the top of their early 70s funky powers – and it also shows them dabbling a bit with electronics, which would become a big part of their sound a few albums later. The best example of this is the totally cool "Electric Frog (parts 1 & 2)", which has this amazing bubbling moogy riff that goes in and out of the song. Other tracks are more straight-ahead funky – and they're all great! Titles include "Music Is The Message", "Love The Life You Live (parts 1 & 2)", "Funky Granny", and the righteous "Soul Vibrations". Also features the super-dope mellow "Blowin With The Wind", a stripped-down number that's dominated by a trumpet solo, and proof that the group could operate just as well at a mellow level as they could at a hard funky one!

A dream come true for all of us who ever loved the incredible songs of Kris Kristofferson at the peak of his craft – his late 60s and early 70s publishing demos – never before released versions of some of his best songs ever in the raw, unvarnished mode we always longed for! It's amazing stuff, including many tracks that would go on to be Kristofferson standards – numbers that got a little too clean and glossy on some of his own LPs and as recorded by others, which is what makes this compilation such a revelation. A genuine coup for our friends at Light In The Attic and a presentation of some of our favorite songs of the era by anyone – done raw and real, the way we always wanted to hear them! The set's produced by Mark Linn, who is responsible for the excellent Karen Dalton archival releases on the Delmore label, and he does similarly great work for Kris. It includes an excellent booklet with reminiscences by Dennis Hopper and Merle Haggard, full lyrics and notes from Kristofferson – plus rare photos and liner notes by Michael Simmons. Includes "Me And Bobby McGee", "Please Don't Tell Me How The Story Ends", "Smile At Me Again", "Border Lord", "Just The Other Side Of Nowhere", "Slow Down", "If You Don't Like Hank Williams", "When I Loved Her", "Billy Dee", "Getting By, High And Strange" and more. 16 tracks in all.

A stone classic in the genre of bad-rapping female soul – and one of the key albums cut by the trio of Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash! The arrangements and production are handled by David Rubinson, who gives the set a nicely polished feel that gets a bit past some of the slight cliches that had been creeping into the girls work – a style that shows them equally well skilled at mellower numbers than at the funkier rockier tunes that were their more familiar stock in trade. Titles include "Come Into My Life", "A Man In A Trenchcoat (Voodoo)", "Get You Something New", "Going Down Makes Me Shiver", "Gypsy Moths", and "Who's Watching The Watcher?".

Reel-y great grooves from Shawn Lee – perhaps his funkiest record in years, and one that has a definite cinematic feel too – as you might guess from the title! The style here is blacksploitation funk at its finest – stripped down to its best core elements, and served up by Lee with a lean, mean groove that shows that he really understands the roots of the genre – and knows how to get the sound just right – while still bringing in some of his own core touches too! As we've come to expect from Shawn, the beats are mighty nice – and the album's overflowing with breaks – plenty of funk to drive along the album's heavy keyboards and guitar riffs in the lead. Titles include "Boomwack", "The Definition Of Funk", "Big Ben", "Rocks On Rocks", "Soho Chase", "Straight To Video", "Piano Milano", "Daylight Robbery", and "Biker Chick".

One of the cool early LPs made by this moody European flute player, and a beautiful set of stripped down spare flute tracks with a slow slow groove that edges along in tiny little droplets. Lindh's flute is processed in a cool spacey way, and many of the tracks also have electric piano. Titles include "Abdo", "Booster Pump", "My Machine", and "Bobo".

A funky classic from Little Beaver – one of the best albums to come out of the Miami scene of the mid 70s! Little Beaver lays down some righteous guitar and heavy vocals over a cool spare backing groove on this one. It's a party, alright, but it's got the feel of the smoldering, latenight hours of it – after everyone's feeling real good for a long while! The sound is sort of a mix between slow cooking raw soul and heavier stripped down funk outings. One of Little Beaver's best – and one of our all time favorites! Titles include "I Can Dig It Baby", "Money Vibrations", "Let The Good Times Roll", and "Party Down (parts 1 & 2)".

An excellent album of smooth soul tracks – very different than Little Beaver's earlier work, but every bit as great! The album's got a warm, mellow finish that's almost a maturation of the sound that Beaver first forged on his Party Down album – with plenty of his deep soul vocals and guitar work laced through the mix, on top of lots of nice keyboard bits from Timmy Thomas! The groove is mellow Miami soul at its best – and in a way, it's this shift that really helped Beaver keep his music alive – giving it a depth that sets it apart from some of the hitbound Miami music of the period. Titles include the classic groover "Concrete Jungle", plus "When Was The Last Time", "Pretty Little Girl", and "I Really Love You Babe".

Of course, this is not the last record album – it's not even the last album by Little Feat – but it's a damn good one! The Last Record Album isn't restless as the previous few albums, with kind of a laidback groove, overall – and we actually really dig Little Feat in a mellow mood! Includes "Romance Dance", "Long Distance Love", "Down Below The Borderline", "Mercenary Territory", "Don't Bogart That Joint", Somebody's Leavin" and more.

Nothing too soft here – as this classic from the Jeff Lorber group of the late 70s is a sweet fusion set with lots of soulful edges, but never a watered-down approach! The groove's much different than you'd expect from Lorber's later work – and the album's got lots of nice edges in the mix, even when things are mellow – a stripped-down sense of instrumentation and production that's a great reminder of how strong jazz like this could be before smoother cliches crept in to smother it! Jeff plays acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, moog, and Oberheim four voice – and the rest of the group keeps time with a lightly soulful bounce, and some nicely peppered solos on alto and flute. The album features guest work by Chick Corea and Joe Farrell – and titles include "The Samba", "Black Ice", "Curtains", "Soft Space", "Swing Funk", and "Proteus".

Slow sexy grooves from Robbie M – an artist with a vibe that's just what you'd expect from his look on the cover! The tunes here are beautifully laidback, and have this slow-percolating quality that's like a mellower take on 80s club – all instrumental, and still with lots of beats and keyboards – just put together at a pace that takes it easy, and never works too hard to force the groove! The album's surprisingly seductive, and a great change from some of the overdone 80s modes floating around out there of late – kind of a cool quiet storm approach to club music – with a mighty nice sound. Titles include "Down With It", "Armed & Dangerous", "Let's Groove", "Stretch Limos", "I'm So In Love With You", "What Is It Girl", "It's Tearin Me Up", and "You've Been Acting Strange Lately".

A great debut from The Malemen – a short-lived group in the recording studio, but one who spent many years on the southern scene as a well-travelled showband! The group have a more modern vibe here than they might on the stage – a sweet 80s groove approach that features plenty of tight basslines bumping up the rhythms, with keyboards following quickly in step – all while the group often do a great job of harmonizing together alongside the groove! There's a nicely varied sound to the record – one that goes way past the usual slapbass funk of the time – and titles include the nice mellow cuts "Baby Doll" and "The Love We'll Share" – plus "Shakedown", "Party Time", "Hard On It", and "Take You Out".

A really great little album on the short-lived, Bob Thiele-run Contact label – an early 60s set that collects rare early work by Shelly Manne from 1944! The set features a series of New York recordings with Shelly – 4 tracks with the Barney Bigard Trio with Eddie Heywood on piano; 4 more with the Eddie Heywood Orchestra with Don Byas; and 4 more with the Eddie Heywood trio. The sound is quite different than Manne's more famous LA sides of the 50s – but hearing him with Heywood's unique phrasing, we can hear where he got a lot of his ideas! Titles include "Sarcastic Lady", "Step Steps Up", "Step Steps Down", "Night & Day", "Them There Eyes", and "Moonglow".

Very strange record that's made up of excerpts of Marsh's solos from a live set recorded by Peter Ind at the Half Note. Ind somehow felt that Marsh's solos were the only thing worth saving from a huge set of tapes that he made of the show, so he edited down the tapes to these 2 minute segments, that have Marsh blowing on titles like "Out Of Nowhere", "Fishin' Around", "Lennie's Pennies", and a number of unnamed titles.

One of the most outside sets we've heard from Rob Mazurek in years – a combination of his own cornet and work on ring modulator – creating a blend of jazz and electronics that's really mindblowing! Mazurek's not alone in his creative expressions – as he's joined here by a group group of players that mixes musicians from Rob's Chicago and Brazilian scenes – including Nicole Mitchell on flute and piccolo, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Mauricio Takara on cavaquinho, Guilherme Granado on keyboards and electronics, Thomas Rohrer on rabeca and C melody sax, Carlos Issa on guitar, and John Herndon on drums – a really unique lineup that lives up to all their promise with the rich sounds on the set. Most tracks are quite long – and titles include "Galactic Ice Skeleton", "Skull Caves Of Alderon", and "Keeping The Light Up".

A full blown duets album by Bonnie Prince Billy and Dawn McCarthy of Faun Fables – co-headlining a straight-up beautiful set of tunes once sung by The Everly Brothers! They're not going for the hits here, rather taking on some of the more unusual Everly originals and covers – which include tunes written by Kris Kristofferson, Jackie Edwards, John Denver, King/Goffin and others. As longtime fans of The Everlys at their wierdest and most adventurous, we can't recommend this enough! Billy & Dawn clearly love the songs, and deliver with genuine warmth and affection – and go all in with the production, too! It's sweet and intimate, yet beautifully textured with steel, electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, harmonium, flute, cello and keyboards – even a sousaphone and tuba! It's mostly got some leftfield country charm, but there's a chugging rocker or 2 in the mix, too. Titles include "Breakdown", "Empty Boxes", "Milk Train", "What Am I Llivng For", "My Little Yellow Bird", "So Sad", "Omaha", "Poems, Prayers And Promises", "Just What I Was Looking For", "Kentucky" and more.

Sublime work from one of the coolest funky combos around – a group who aren't content to just hit the same funky styles as other outfits – and one who really stretch strongly in their pursuit of new sounds! The set's definitely funky – especially on the drums – but there's also this amazing interplay between the horns, weird sounds from the organ, and cool extra touches on auto harp and ukulele – which gives the music these exotic elements that are simply mindblowing! The set's a stone smoker from the start – instrumental, but in ways that let the Menahan Street Band open up way more than when working with a singer – showing us that they've got some of the freshest ideas in the contemporary funky underground. Titles include "The Crossing", "Sleight Of Hand", "Three Faces", "Keep Coming Back", "Seven Is The Wind", "Driftwood", and "Ivory & Blue".

This overlooked jazz vocalist lays down a mellow set of jazzy vocal tracks with a group featuring Walter Bishop Jr. The material's all original, and all hip, and includes the tracks "Gone the Midnight Sun", "Ice Fire", "Individually", and the long "Silent Kingdoms Suite".

One of the greatest studio talents of Europe in the 70s! Janko Nilovic may not be a household name, but he was a seminal force in the Parisian studio scene during the 60s and 70s – cutting jazz, funk, pop, and Latin sides with a nutty genius that we'd be hard pressed to beat on this side of the Atlantic! He had a mad talent for mixing unmixable elements – in the kind of way we might ascribe to some of the better MPS groovy sides, or some of the weirder European funk albums, like the classic work of Duke Of Burlington. This long-overdue 2 volume set takes a rich look at Nilovic's talent - and provides some of his best obscure work in a very handsome package. Titles on this first volume include "Gipsy Funk", "Shacking Pop", "Electric Days", "Cross Rolls", "Blow Down", "Centre Atomique", and "Scratching Machine".

One of greatest moments of genius by pop vocals eccentric Harry Nilsson – the classic early 70s "story" album The Point – perhaps is most imaginative work! The Point is a weird tale of a kid whose head was differently shaped than the rest of his townsfolk (hey, we're not making this up!), which leads him to go on a Yellow Submarine-esque psychedelic odyssey to sort out his identity and feelings! In the end, everything ends up all happy and sweet, but not before Nilsson lays down some very cool, very groovy tracks over nice off-beat instrumentation arranged and conducted by George Tipton. Titles include "Everything's Got 'Em", "Me And My Arrow", "Poli High", "Think About Your Troubles", "Life Life", "Are You Sleeping?", "POV Waltz" and more. This reverent 2012 vinyl reissue from Get On Down includes a reproduction of the original 11.5" X 11.5" full color comic storyboard by Gary Lund – with the lyrics printed in the gatefold. Beautiful!

The start of a legendary run for vocalist Alexander O'Neal – and a set that really helped redefine the sound of male soul in the 80s! O'Neal got his start in an early version of The Time, and he's working here with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis – but the sound of the record is way deeper than all of those references put together – a careful, classy set that definitely lives up to the vintage look of Alexander on the cover! Jam and Lewis play tightly in the group, handling most of the key instrumentation – often with a restrained style that's quite different than their pumping hits, which lets O'Neal's great vocals flow out with an undeniably soulful power. Rhythms often hit the best sort of groove for Alexander's style – which sounds best in a mellow or midtempo mode – and the set's filled with classics, including "A Broken Heart Can Mend", "If You Were Here Tonight", "Innocent", "What's Missing", "You Were Meant To Be My Lady", and "Look At Us Now".

Great work from the Ohio Players – and proof that moving to a big label could be a good thing for a funky group! This was the band's first album for Mercury – and although one might have the temptation to say that the label cut down the radical funk sound of the trippy Westbound years, the move also taught the band to sharpen up their act, and get out of the repetitive sloppy groove into which they'd been lapsing during the past few years. The record's a lot smoother than earlier work – with a polished funky sound that would soon push the band right up there with Earth Wind & Fire at the top of the soul charts. And although there's familiar funky numbers like "Skin Tight", "Jive Turkey", and "Streakin Cheek To Cheek" – the best moment on the entire album is the wonderful spacey soul number "Heaven Must be Like This", a seven minute mellow groover that's got a sophisticated jazzy soul style, with voices and piano soaring into the heavens, in a way that always still sends chills down our spine! That cut shows the band's tremendous growth – and it's one of their best-ever!

The Orlons recreate the sound of yesteryear – singing a dozen older doo wop and R&B hits, but taking the tunes in their own sweet mixture of male and female voices! The backings are a bit sparer than on other Orlons albums of the 60s – and really allow the vocals to come forward nicely – giving a soulful update to a set of tunes that include "Sea Cruise", "Little Star", "Tonight Tonight", "Come Go With Me", "You Cheated", "Deserie", and "Stranded In The Jungle".

The second set of madness from the legendary Os Mutantes – and like the first, an album done in close collaboration with arranger/producer Rogerio Duprat, whose talents add a new level of genius to the record! The album's got a compelling mix of styles that strikes out on the very first tune – a playful pastiche that's partly postmodern, partly psychedelic, and still tremendously powerful decades later – even if you can't understand most of the lyrics! Styles are just about impossible to pin down, but that's what makes the record so unique and essential – and if you ever needed one album to convince you of the mindblowing energy taking place during the Tropicalia years, this one may well be it! A few tracks are written by Tom Ze, and titles include "Dom Quixote", "Dia 36", "Magica", "Rita Lee", "Algo Mais", "Qualquer Bobagem", and "Fuga No II".

An incredible funky soundtrack – one of the best of the blacksploitation generation, and one of the rarest too! Johnny Pate did the orchestrations for this excellent lost film, and he brought the same sort of energy to it that he did with his soundtrack for Shaft In Africa. There's some masterfully funky tracks that are very tightly arranged – grooving hard with some nice "chase" themes, and slowing down in a few sexier, more soulful numbers. Adam Wade sang the vocals to "Brother On The Run" – perhaps the catchiest of all soundtrack tunes from the time – and other titles include "Brother", "Auto Chase", "Car Bumps", "Soulful Brother On The Run", and "Ms. Johnson's Sex Scene".

A fantastic session that's also one of Houston Person's rarest! The set is a bit more complicated than some of his earlier work – moving away from the hard and funky organ lineup, into a more lyrically swinging quintet mode, with Cedar Walton on piano, Alan Dawson on vibes, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Frankie Jones on drums. The presence of Walton really opens up the set, as his majestic soul jazz approach during this time gives the whole album a stridently sophisticated groove – hammered down by Dawson's highly rhythmic approach to playing the vibes (he was mostly a drummer, remember?) Houston's in fine form sax-wise, blowing relaxed and meaningful solos in the mode that he used on the Blue Odyssey album – or kind of in a mode like Sonny Criss on his late 60s Prestige sides. Titles include "More", "Girl Talk", "Close Quarters", and "Chocomotive".

Very dark work from The Pretty Things – an even more complicated, heavier-sounding album than SF Sorrow! The album's hardly got the lightness you might guess from its Parachute title – and instead, really shows the band moving into darker corners – both musically and lyrically, as they work in a heady brew of sophisticated guitar lines and adult song themes. And although former leader Dick Taylor's left the group, the other members are still holding down the fort nicely – hardly missing a beat here as they step onto a new level in their incredible stretch of growth. Titles include "The Good Mr. Square", "The Letter", "Rain", "Cries From The Midnight Circus", "Sickle Clowns", "Miss Fay Regrets", and "Grass".

Not just Jimmy Reed – as the album features work by Phil Upchurch on bass and Al Duncan on drums, plus some great uncredited organ too – but the album's still a great chance to hear the great one at all his stripped-down best! Jimmy really dominates on vocals and guitar, and some harmonica too – and most of the tunes have that seductively vamping style that made Reed's music such a huge influence on the 60s generation. Titles include "Good Lover", "Take It Slow", "Let's Get Together", "I'll Change That Too", "In The Morning", "Oh John", and "Back Home At Noon".

The Together sides of the Alone Together project from producer, beatmaker and instrumentalist Karriem Riggins – who's a brilliant jazz drummer, when that's what he wants to do – and he's also a beat-heavy hip hop production guru when duty calls! Together finds Karriem wearing his hip hop instrumentalist hat, and he wears it very well – in a way that reminds us a bit of fellow Detroit-raised maestro J Dilla. Karriem's pedigree as a live drummer informs his MPC 3000 experimentation very nicely, too – as he holds an insistent jazzy soul beat underneath boundless sampler atmosphere. In vinyl, the Alone Together project is released separately in halves – and Together titles include "Belle Isle Reprise", "Tom Toms", "Because", "Boy Is Doin It Right", "Back In Brazil", "Live At Berts", "Voyager 5000", "Matador", "Bring That Beat Back (Next Time)", "J Dilla The Greatest" and more.

The only album we've ever seen by Johnny Robinson – a rare non-Hi Records set produced by Willie Mitchell, with a sound that's as deeply soulful as some of the best indie work coming out of the Memphis scene in the 60s! Willie's style here is rougher than that used with Al Green or Ann Peebles – and Robinson comes off wonderfully in a nice mix of funk, deep soul, and slower burning backings – all handled with a sense of poise, but also enough of a down-home sense to keep all the raw edges nicely intact! The album's a rare Memphis gem from an unusual source – and titles include "God Is Love", "We Are Gonna Make It", "Slip Away", "Reconsider Me", "Funky Feet", "Lady Doctor", and "Don't Take It So Hard".

Warm thoughts, and equally warm vocals – thanks to the legendary Smokey Robinson, who's still sounding great here at the start of the 80s! The record's surprisingly charming – and has the laidback, mellow-going sort of sound that Robinson first crafted on Quiet Storm – but delivered here with a style that's even more personal and intimate, too. Things are quite stripped-down, especially given the overblown styles other singers were reaching for at the time – and titles include "Let Me Be The Clock", "Into Each Rain Some Life Must Fall", 'Wine, Women & Song", 'What's In Your Life For Me", and "I Want To Be Your Love".

An oft-overlooked jazzy gem from Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson – and a beautifully swinging session that has Gil toning it down a bit, and working into a nicely musical groove that gets past the heavy politics of earlier years! The record's a great showcase for the more upbeat side of Gil's talents – and what it lacks in righteousness, it more than makes up for in a warmly flowing and very soulful vibe! The band's in great form – laying down tight warm jazzy riffs that provide some of the best backing for Gil's voice we've heard since Winter In America – and titles include the wonderfully catchy "Racetrack In France", plus "Hello Sunday Hello Road", "Under The Hammer", and "We Almost Lost Detroit".

A mad bit of funk and jazz from Ben Sidran – much more tripped-out than his later work! Ben's got a great bunch of musicians on the album – with either Tony Williams or "funky drummer" Clyde Stubblefield on drums, and Phil Upchurch on bass, laying down a nice dark groove on the best cuts – often with an offbeat funky sound that's made the record a favorite for crate-diggers for years. Ben's on piano, grooving in a number of different hipster modes – from LA sleezy to New Orleans soulful – and his vocals, as always, are compelling and catchy. The set includes the nice long groover "Now I Live (And Now My Life Is Done)", a monster track with a great slow groove that's been sampled a number of times over the years – and other cuts include "Full Compass", "Play The Piano", and "Think Twice".

Classic Blue Note work by Horace Silver – the stuff that soul jazz legends are made of, and an album that showed he was destined to be a huge force away from the Jazz Messengers! Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook hold down the frontline with Horace – playing in a mellifluous style that links the tenor and trumpet magically, dancing in sweetly lyrical lines over the impeccable rhythm team of Gene Taylor on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Tracks are short, tight, and grooving with a sound that's virtually the blueprint for early soul jazz – and the album includes classic Silver tunes like "Come On Home", "Mellow D", "Finger Poppin", and "Swingin The Samba".

Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than the skittish funk of the first few records, and breaking out on some great soul numbers that show Sly to be an even better singer than before – touchingly sensitive at times, in a really beautiful way! Titles include "Loose Booty", which has a wonderful popping bass/hollow drum sound, and a tasty break in the middle – plus the cuts "This Is Love", "Wishful Thinkin", "Time For Livin", "Can't Strain My Brain", and "Say You Will".

A wonderful record – one you might pass up easily, but not to be missed – as it's one of our straight jazz treasures of the 80s! The album's mostly straight ahead hardbop – recorded with a largeish group that includes Robin Eubanks on trombone, Steve Coleman on saxes, Mulgrew Miller on piano, Ralph Moore on tenor, and Wallce Roney on trumpet. The soulfulness of the players really makes the album sparkle – as all inventively blow around tightly scripted tunes laid down by Smith, driving with the fierceness of some of Art Blakey's best work towards the end of the 60s, recorded here with a lot more energy than the usual Concord session. Titles include "Just Have Fun", "Song Of Joy", "The Creeper", "A Simple Samba Song", and "Love Will Find A Way".
