A holy grail – and one of the only records ever cut by Donna McGhee, an incredibly soulful club singer who worked with both Patrick Adams and Roy Ayers! This album's her legendary side for the team of Adams and Greg Carmichael – and it's got a sweet and mellow groove that's unlike anything else we can think of. Definitely in the vein of Sylvia Striplin and Pam Todd – but somehow even more soulful and better put together than work by those two singers. The album includes a killer 6 and a half minute version of Donna's classic "It Ain't No Big Thing", plus the tight groover "Mr Blindman", and the cuts "Do As I Do", "I'm A Love Bug", and "Make It Last Forever". Great all the way through – and a rare gem that's worth the price! CD also features bonus cuts "It Ain't No Big Thing", done in single and a 2 part Personal Touch version – and "Make It Last Forever" in a single edit.

The record's definitely in the vein of Sylvia Striplin and Pam Todd – but is somehow even more soulful and better put together than work by those two singers – really consistent all the way through, with an undeniable sort of depth. Don Byas is at the forefront of two sessions here – one with the Tyree Glenn Orchestra, the other featuring the Don Byas Ree-Boppers – and tracks on those include "Walking Around", "Red Cross", "Cement Mixer", "Mad Monk", "Billie's Bounce", and "The Hour Of Parting". Howard McGhee is next up – with 7 tracks from a rare 1948 session, and titles that include "Big Will", "Donna Lee", "Nicole", "Denise", and "Punkins". Last up are four tunes by James Moody – cut during the prime of his early bop years, in 1949, and done with a nicely modern edge. Titles include "Verso", "Recto", "Oh Well", and "Convulsions". 23 tracks in all!

A key turn in the groove for The Fatback Band – one that has the group getting a good dose of "night fever", and smoothing out their funk for the 70s disco crowd! Yet although clubby, the record's still plenty funky – a refinement of the groove first started on Yum Yum, streamlined into a sweet blend of bass, drums, guitar, and plenty of horns – but all still with a sense of liveness and jamming that plenty shows the roots of the combo from the old days. A few tracks here have a nicely sweet soul sound – sometimes with backing vocals from Donna McGhee and Phyllis Hyman – and titles include "Night Fever", "A Little Funky Dance", "The Joint", "Disco Crazy", and "The Booty".
