new Cortijo with Ismael Rivera — Internacionales – Ritmos Bailables ... CD
Marvela/Disco Hit, Mid 60s. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99
Classic sounds from Cortijo and Ismael Rivera – one of the best 60s teams in Latin music! The grooves are filled with lots of lively percussion – that great small combo sound that Cortijo did so well at this point – and Rivera's got a wonderfully soulful way with the vocals – really stretching things out and inflecting them – but also shaking off the more emotive modes of the past, to perfectly slide in with the grooves! Titles include "Fea", "A Lo Loco", "Fantasia Sideral", "Sebastiana", "Conmigo No", "Un Minuto De Silencio", and "Con El Orgullo".

new Charles Fox & His Charanga — Just For Fun ... CD
Disco Hit, Mid 60s. New Copy .... $9.99 13.99
A rare early Latin session from Charles Fox – an artist who's best known for his TV and film soundtrack work of the 70s – but who really cooks nicely on this sweet 60s set! The album's got an all-star crew – including flute from Johnny Pacheco, and rhythms from Louie Ramirez – and the groove is a much jazzier take on charanga styles than usual – filled with the kind of vivid twists and turns you might expect from Charles' soundtrack work! Elliot Romero handles most of the vocals, but it's the instrumental interplay that really grabs us – complex and swinging at the same time, with lots of dark notes that really deepen the sound of the album. Titles include "Contento Estoy", "Matilda Y Maceo", "Chiquita", "Viene Acabando", "El Melao", "Que Rica Pachanga", and "No Me Dejes De Querer" – plus the totally killer "Blue Pachanga" – worth the price of the album alone!

new Kako, Totico, Y El Trabuco — La Maquina Y El Motor ... CD
Disco Hit, Early 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99
Kako and Totico do way more than jump start the car with this killer collaboration – and really make the record burn brightly with a classic 70s salsa sound! There's lots of dark twists and turns to the set – not just from the horn parts and the way they roll along the grooves easily – but also from Totico's excellent vocals – which, given that he's also a percussionist, seem to have an inherent sense of rhythm right from the start! The sound is nice and raw, and the album is filled with great moments like "Para Ya, Bandolera", "El Trabuco Special", "Atencion Senores", "La Maquina Y El Motor", and "Oye Los Tambores".

new Raphy Leavitt — Jibaro Soy ... CD
Borinquen/Disco Hit, 1973. New Copy .... $12.99 14.99
An early classic from the great Raphy Leavitt – one of the leading underground lights of the 70s salsa scene, especially if you get away from the Fania/Tico side of the universe! There's a strong sense of soul to the record right from the start – one that comes more from the delivery of the lyrics, and some of the bluer notes in the instrumentation – never that uncommon compared to the rest of the scene, but delivered with this gritty sensibility that almost takes us back to Spanish Harlem days. Titles include "Jibaro Soy", "Cafe Colao", "La Cuna Blanca", "En Memoria A Un Hermano", and "Consentida".

new Noro Morales — Noro Morales En Su Ambiente ... CD
Mar Vel/Disco Hit, Late 50s. New Copy .... $9.99 13.99
Beautiful spare sounds from Noro Morales – and an album that really lets you hear his amazing work on the piano! Most of the album simply features Noro's playing, backed by bass and percussion, and no other orchestration – a really stripped-down setting that's even more spare than the usual Latin album of this nature! The album's very mellow – but has a good late night Latin groove throughout – thanks to this pronounced bassline that really grabs up the bottom end of the sound spectrum – leaving Noro to work on the keys up top. Titles include "Flores Negras", "Tres Palabras", "Tiempos Viejos", "Silencio", "Perfume De Gardenias", and "Palmeras".

new Pijuan Sextet — Estamos En Todas Groovy! ... CD
Hit Parade/Disco Hit, Late 60s. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99
A pretty darn obscure one – with a wild cover, wild title, and a goofy looking bandleader who definitely had a great sense of humor! Pijuan leads the group, sings, and plays organ – and the record's a weird mix of groovy 60s pop, shing-a-ling/boogaloo tracks, and other Latin groovers. The best track is the lively "Shing A Ling Boogaloo", which has some very sinister piano lines – and other highlights include a groovy take on "Up Up & Away", the drum-heavy "Comparsas", and the swinging "La Bala De Plata".

new Ricardo Ray & Bobby Cruz — Los Diferentes En Puerto Rico ... CD
Fonseca/Disco Hit, Mid 60s. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99
Very early work from the team of Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz – a stone cooker that shows that they were perfectly matched, right from the start! The rhythms are super-tight – way more so than on later recordings – and the instrumentation has all the jazzy flourishes that really seem to set the vocals soaring – a fluid, soulful style that really shows the changes this young pair were bringing to Latin music at the time! The whole thing's great – not really Latin soul, but a great precursor, with equally open energy – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Viva Richie Ray", "Yenyere Jala Jala", "Bravo De Verdad", "Mi Guaguanco", "El Montuno De Hoy", and "Pachanga Medley".

Cortijo — Cortijo Bailable ... CD
Ansonia/Disco Hit, Late 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99 Just Sold Out!
Some hard-cooking salsa from the legendary Cortijo – a set that seems to be from later years, but which has all the sparkle of his classic early work! The horns are nice and tight, and inflected with some of the more modern touches crafted in 70s New York and Puerto Rico – and vocals are sometimes by the group, sometimes by a male lead singer – who really knows how to hit the right sort of soulful vibe for Cortijo's grooves. Titles include "Buenas Noches", "La Mala Gente", "La Pena De Amar", "Acerca El Oido", "Quitate El Zapato", and "Especial De Loiza Aldea".

Gema/Disco Hit, Early 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 13.99 Just Sold Out!
It's always a treat to hear from the team of Kako and Totico – and this album's no exception! The pair have a way of coming up with lively interplay right from the start – the energy that would formerly build over time in Kako's early jam session records, nicely brought to the forefront here and combined with Totico's contributions – all to make for an album that grooves strong from the ground up! Titles include "Que Quiere La Nina", "Con Sabor Llego La Rumba", "El Doloroso", "Pongase Duro", "Que Quiere La Nina", and "Ganga Zumba".

new Bobby Valentin — Ritmo Pa Goza ... CD
Disco Hit, 1965. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99 Out Of Stock
An early cooker from the young Bobby Valentin – a record cut even before his initial outings for Fania, and done with the same trumpet-heavy groove! There's a raw crackle to the set that's mighty nice – not really Latin soul, but the kind of small combo energy you'd find in the generation just before – as on some of the best Joe Cuba Sextet sessions before his time at Tico. Bobby's trumpet has plenty of jazz inflections, and the rhythms from the group are nice and tight – great lean energy from this younger generation – on tracks that include "Para Don Jose", "Bombon", "Try Out", "Macorina", "Dejame Tranquilo", "Que Ambiente", and "Caliente".

Ashford & Simpson — So So Satisfied (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
Sublimely satisfying work from Ashford & Simpson – a stone killer from the height of their late 70s glory days on Warner Brothers! The pair are working together wonderfully at this point – wrapped up in that blend of upbeat soul and righteous undercurrents that made them a real cut above in mainstream soul – getting great help from arrangers William Eaton, Paul Riser, and Al Gorgoni – all of whom know how to hit that perfect Ashford & Simpson balance between tightness, class, and soulful spontaneity! Backings are always filled with lots of jazzy touches, too – the kind of sophisticated soul elements other would cop from the pair in years to come – and titles include "Over & Over", "It's You", "If You're Lying", "Couldn't Get Enough", "Destiny", "So So Satisfied", and "Tried Tested & Found True". CD features 4 bonus tracks – "Over & Over (12" disco mix)", "Over & Over (Simphouse M&M mix)", "Tried Tested & Found True (12" disco mix)", and "Tried Tested & True (Simphouse M&M mix)".

James Brown — Get Up Offa That Thing ... LP
Polydor, 1976. Very Good .... $11.99
James Brown screams at the beginning of the record – "I'm Back! I'm Back!" – which is his proclamation that he was ready to take on a whole new generation of funk music – grooving with a new sound that was guaranteed to hit as big as it did in earlier years! The approach is a bit more uptempo than previous albums, but still never at all in a disco/club mode – and James really does strike a strong new chord with the groove here – stretching things out and cooking things up nicely. Rhythms are still quite sharp, although possibly not as dynamic as before – and titles include the great title medley of "Get Up Offa That Thing/Release The Pressure", plus "This Feeling", "Home Again", "I Refuse To Lose", and "Can't Take It With You".
(Cover has a cut corner & a bit of light wear.)

James Brown — Jam 1980s ... LP
Polydor, 1978. Very Good .... $2.99
At the end of the 70s, James was combatting the disco movement by forging his own brand of dancefloor music – a super-heavy fusion of straight-on funk, but with a more up-tempo twist and extended in a style to compete with some of the hit 12" singles being issued at the time. This album, although not classic material, is still a great example of James' talent for adaptation, and it features some nice long tracks – like "The Spank", "Nature", "Eyesight", and "Jam" – that still sound pretty good to us today.
(Cover has unglued seams and some wear.)

new BT Express — Do It (Til You're Satisfied) ... LP
Scepter, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The monumental debut of BT Express – and an excellent funk album that often gets overlooked by fans of the music because of the band's bigger fame as a disco group! This first record has the combo grooving hard and instrumentally – in the mode of a tight blacksploitation soundtrack, with plenty of tight wah wah guitar riffing, conga beats, and funky flute and sax – topped off by just the right amount of strings to make the set soar even more! The album's best known for the title track "Do It (Til You're Satisfied)" – which was a big hit, but is still an excellent groover – and the set also includes loads of other great cuts too – like "Express", which was the original song that the created the JBs' response track "Monorail"; "This House is Smokin'", which has lots of funky descending horn bits; and other great tunes that include "Mental Telepathy", "If It Don't Turn You On", and "Do You Like It".

Chapter 8 — Chapter 8 ... LP
Ariola, 1979. Very Good .... $12.99
The first album from Chapter 8 – a set that's probably best remembered for introducing the world to Anita Baker, but one that's also pretty darn great on its own! Chapter 8 have a sharply soulful focus, one that takes them a bit above some of the other mainstream ensembles of the time – a balance of grooving rhythms and deeper feelings that's just about perfect – about at the level you might get from Maze or LTD, two other groups who both sported equally soulful lead singers! Gerald Lyles sings the male parts alongside Anita, and the blend is perfect – one that should have made the record even bigger than it was at the time, but maybe all that much better, since the lack of hit quality really keeps things fresh. Titles include the singles "Ready For Your Love" and "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl", plus "Don't You Like It", "Let's Get Together", "Come & Boogie", "I Go Disco", and "We Need Love".

Double Exposure — Ten Percent (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Salsoul/Big Break (UK), 1976. New Copy .... $14.99
A wonderful album – one of those underground classics that seems to show up in everyone's record collection, even though it was never a huge chart hit. Double Exposure are part of the "second wave" of East Coast vocal groups – and like their contemporaries, they mix the sweet harmony soul tradition of earlier years with the burgeoning clubby sound that was coming out of Philly. The set's produced by the Baker/Harris/Young team – who also play on the album along with the rest of the Sigma Sound crew – and the songs feature some stunning anthemic club numbers, plus a few surprisingly sweet harmony tunes. Includes their huge cut "Ten Percent", the amazing positivist groover "Everyman" – and the cuts "My Love Is Free", "Gonna Give My Love Away", and "Just Can't Say Hello". CD features some great bonus tracks too – including "Ten Percent (Walter Gibbons 12" disco)", "Everyman (Joe Claussell 12" disco)", "My Love Is Free (Tom Moulton 12" disco)", "Ten Percent (single)", "Everyman (single)", and "My Love Is Free (single)".

Dramatics — Any Time Any Place ... CD
ABC/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy .... $18.99
One of the excellent recordings made by The Dramatics at ABC – great group soul gems that are sometimes overlooked because they didn't yield as many hits as earlier sets – but which are stellar records nonetheless! This one's got all the right elements firmly in place – killer production by Don Davis, and smooth but real harmonies from LJ Reynolds, Ron Banks, and the rest of the group. There's a few tracks that hit a smooth sort of groove that might be tagged as "disco" – but which is really just an extension of the super-dope mode that the group used in earlier years – and which has a lot more to offer than just a cheap dancefloor cash in. Titles include "Life Is Just A Playground", "Love Birds", "A Marriage On Paper Only", "I'm Hooked On You", "That's My Favorite Song", "I Think About You", and "I Just Wanna Dance With You".

Exit 9 — Straight Up ... LP
BRC, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The one and only album by Exit 9 – an obscure funk combo who recorded this rare set for Brunswick in 1975! The group is extremely tight instrumentally – working at a very fast funky clip that's kind of similar to work by Bohannon or Sound Experience – both of whom shared Exit 9's pre-disco approach to dancefloor grooves – more fast-funk than the tighter club sound of later years, and proof that a funky combo could hit the dancefloor if it had the right groove! Most numbers have vocals, and instrumentation includes lots of nice guitar work that keeps a rawer edge on the tracks – choppy and gritty in a really great way. Tracks include "MFB", "Miss Funky Fox", "Fly", "Julie I Love You", "Jive Man", and "Rhapsody in Funk".

new Faith Hope & Charity — Heavy Love ... LP
Sussex, 1972. Very Good .... $11.99
Good album by this female-male-female soul trio, with a lot of tracks written and arranged by Van McCoy, with the good New York soul sound that he was laying down with groups like this in the days before he hit the disco. Zulema's on vocals, and she also wrote a few tracks. Cuts include "God Bless The World", "I Worship The Very Ground You Walk On", "Heavy Love", "I Was There", and "We Can Change The World".

Festival/Boris Midney — Evita/Empire Strikes Back – Disco Recharge ... CD
Harmless (UK), 1979/1980. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99
A pair of disco gems back to back in a 2CD set – with great bonus tracks too! First up is Evita, a loving take on the hit 70s musical – one that serves up all the best tracks in a sweet disco mode – and moves the sound from Broadway to the main floor of Studio 54! Festival present the material, but the key force here is disco maestro Boris Midney – who really helps craft some compelling keyboard-heavy grooves for the set – wicked dancefloor rhythms that have lots of sweet funky touches, topped with vocals that still retain some of the drama of the original! The approach worked surprisingly well with audiences at the time – and titles include "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Buenos Aires", "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You", "Rainbow High", "She Is A Diamond", and "High Flying Adored". CD features four more long bonus tracks – including two "Special Dance Music Version" mixes from promo 12" singles – plus "Don't Cry For Me Argentina (7" version)" and "Don't Cry For Me (Mexican 12" mix)". Next up is another great Boris Midney project – one of the few issued under his own name, and a cool disco-fication of the themes from The Empire Strikes Back! The set only features four tracks, but all of them are relatively long – and filled with cool instrumental touches on keyboards, guitar, and percussion – more than enough to blow similar Star Wars disco projects out of the water! Titles include "Yoda's Theme", "The Imperial March", "Han Solo & The Princess", and "Star Wars".

Gloria Gaynor — Love Tracks ... CD
Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $26.99
THE lasting classic from Gloria Gaynor – the record that contains her tremendous hit "I Will Survive", and a great batch of disco grooves overall! The album's got a simple, honest sort of approach, despite its release in an era of overblown dancefloor sets – and arranger Freddie Perren does a great job of balancing all the elements here – hitting strong on the rhythms, but mixing in bits of strings from Gene Page and others – all in a sound that's round, warm, and surprisingly soulful, despite the big crossover fame of the hit on the record. In addition to a nice long take of "I Will Survive", other tracks include "Anybody Wanna Party?", "Please, Be There", "I Said Yes", and "You Can Exit".

Cuba Gooding — 1st Cuba Gooding Album/Love Dancer ... CD
Motown/Expansion (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy .... $16.99
A pair of late 70s Motown gems from Cuba Gooding – back to back on a single CD! The well-titled 1st Cuba Gooding Album is his first project on his own, done after a classic stretch in the Main Ingredient! Gooding's working here with help from Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter – the hit 70s soul team who really help him find a great new groove on his own – a sound that's rooted in the sweeter vocal modes of The Main Ingredient, but which has a sparklingly sophisticated quality of its own! The music is mature and upbeat – a bit like some of David Ruffin or Eddie Kendricks' solo work of the 70s – and nearly all tunes here are originals by Potter and Lambert. Titles include "Fool Of The Year", "Mind Pleaser", "Hold On To What You Got", "All I Can Give You Is Love", and "As Long As There's You". Love Dancer is a tremendous solo outing from Cuba Gooding – a record that not only shows his strength as a lead singer away from The Main Ingredient – but one that also shows that he really knows how to groove as well! The album's produced by Michael Smith, and has a vibe that's a bit different than Gooding's previous Motown record – with some tunes that have a wonderfully rich clubby sort of sparkle – and some even nicer mellow moments that really unlock that mature potential Gooding always had in his vocals – that smooth-stepping sound he'd really bring to the forefront when returning to The Main Ingredient in the 80s. Titles include the great mellow groover "I'm Yours Now" – plus "Hey The Party's In Here", "Disco Royale", "Trust Me", "Tell Me How Long It's Been", and "Running Man".

Barry Gray — Space 1999 ... LP
RCA, 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of Barry Gray's greatest moments – the ultra groovy soundtrack for Space 1999, the short-lived but well-remembered mainstream sci-fi show from the 70s! The title theme has a nice bit of a dancefloor bounce to it – pre-guessing the disco-copy mode that other space soundtracks were facing in the 70s by turning out its own original hit – and other tunes in the set follow a sometimes similar mode that makes the record far funkier than you'd guess for a soundtrack of this type! Some tracks are certainly more straightforward and dramatic, but there's plenty here in that funky Brit Easy mode of the mid 70s – lots of compressed instrumentation and some slight electronic touches – and often rhythms that are a lot harder than you'd expect! Highlights include "Breakaway", "Death's Other Dominion", "Black Sun", and a reprise of the theme.

High Inergy — Lovin' Fever – The Best Of High Inergy ... CD
Motown/Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $16.99
Finally, a sweet compilation of some of the best numbers from latter day Motown girl group High Inergy – sunny soul that shines especially brightly with the benefit of hindsight! They managed to hit the charts early on, but it's pretty easy to see how these ladies could be unjustly overlooked in the grand scheme. They signed the Motown in the later 70s, after the Supremes and other formative girl groups had long ago finished blazing the trails, plus Motown was at a real crossroads in terms of it's honoring its iconic history, while still navigating contemporary trends. Meanwhile, High Inergy recorded some wonderful stuff – with some late disco era string-laden production as well as tender ballads – both focusing on the sweet vocals and songcraft, rather than trying too hard to be trendy. The original albums may have been hit & miss, but Expansion does a terrific job of treasure hunting – every track here is lovely! 20 tracks in all: Includes "Lovin' Fever", "First Impressions", "I'm A Believer", "Goin' Thru The Motions", "Cold This Be Love", "Devotion", "Just A Touch Away" feat Smokey Robinson, "Somebody, Somewhere", "Hold On To My Love" feat Switch, "All Of You", "Journey To Love". "He's A Pretender" and more.

Honey Cone — Soulful Tapestry (with bonus track) ... CD
Hot Wax/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $26.99
Definitely a soulful tapestry here – as the trio of Edna Wright, Shellie Clark, and Carolyn Willis are at the height of their 70s powers – soaring forth in a massive trio mode, and one that really rewrites the sound of girl group soul for the 70s! There's a bouncy, upbeat groove to the record – kind of a pre-disco approach, but one that's still strongly rooted in the best Detroit soul mode of the Holland-Dozier-Holland team too – balanced with just the right sort of force that makes the trio sound great, and all without any of the cliches that this sort of group might hit a few years later! Titles include the Honey Cone classics "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show (parts 1 & 2)" and "Want Ads", plus the tracks "VIP", "The Day I Found Myself", "Stick Up", "Don't Count Your Chickens", "All the Kings Horses", and "How Does It Feel". Honey Cone — Sweet Replies (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Hot Wax/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $31.99
The second album by Honey Cone – and the one that really broke them out of the box! The record's got a groove that gets going right from the start – a sense of upbeat, soulful energy that really shows why the Honey Cone approach was so different than most of the girl groups who came before them – a groovier, more righteous style that shows that the ladies are very much in charge – and able to send things over the top with their unified energy! Production is great – very rumbling and bold, which further helps the groove – and titles include the huge hit "Want Ads" – a pre-disco cut that pointed the way towards future female soul groups of the mid 70s – plus "Deaf Blind Paralyzed", "Sunday Morning People", "My Mind's On Leaving", "We Belong Together", and "Blessed Be Our Love". CD features two bonus tracks – "Want Ads (unedited version)", and "The Day I Found Myself (single version)".

Gloria Jones — Reunited ... LP
AVI, 1982. Very Good+ .... $2.99
A pretty odd little record from Gloria Jones – a great soul singer back in the 60s when she was pounding out the hard northern numbers, but not so great here, where she's in an odd style that mixes disco with a hard soul approach, and just doesn't work. The "Reunited" in the title refers to Gloria and Ed Cobb – her producer on earlier records, and the force behind this effort. Gloria had previously spent time working in the group T Rex and was married to the late Marc Bolan – and she dedicates the painful number "Sixty Minutes Of Making Love" to their time together. Features a remake of Gloria's original hit "Tainted Love", plus "Body Heat", "The Touch Of Venus", and "I'm Going To Run Away With Him Tonight".

KC & The Sunshine Band — KC & The Sunshine Band Part 3 ... LP
TK, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold .... $4.99
Mega-hit material from KC & The Sunshine band – an album issued firmly into the disco years, but which still had the group hitting hard in their trademark Miami sound! The tracks here are a bit longer and more hook-heavy than before – and represent the kind of material that linked harder Kool & The Gang-styled funk with some of the crossover sounds that Miami was famous for at the time – a sound that was still largely pre-disco in its roots, but which also helped set the crossover scene for so many other groups of the 70s. The set is filled with loads of huge hits – like "Shake Your Booty", "I'm Your Boogie Man", and "Baby I Love You" – and other tracks include "I Like To Do It", "Come On In", and "Let's Go Party".

KC & The Sunshine Band — Who Do Ya Love ... CD
TK/Collectors Choice, 1978. New Copy .... $3.99 12.98
Classic 70s work from KC & The Sunshine Band – a record that's not as hit-heavy as previous efforts, but still a plenty great set that's filled with catchy dancefloor funk! KC's clearly feeling the heat of the disco fire he helped to ignite a few years before – and there's definitely an ear hear towards tracks that would boom out nicely on a heavier sound system – kind of a deepening of the sometimes bargain basement production the group got on earlier TK records. That approach doesn't dampen the groove, though, and there's still a nice mix here of soul, funk, club, and tropical modes – sometimes a bit off the mark, but still a heck of a lot better than most of the group's contemporaries! Titles include a remake of "It's The Same Old Song", plus "Who Do Ya Love", "How About A Little Love", "Sho-Nuff'" and "Come To My Island".

KC & The Sunshine Band — Who Do Ya Love ... LP
TK, 1978. Near Mint- .... $1.99
(Includes the heavy inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch.)

Fern Kinney — Groove Me (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Malaco/Big Break (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $14.99
A standout classic from Fern Kinney – and a set that not only marked a big moment of evolution for southern soul, but also for the Mississippi scene as well! The set was recorded at the Malaco studios in Jackson, but has a vibe that's much closer to some of the TK Records material from Miami – that maturation of southern soul during the disco era – as warmer, more modern touches came into play with rootsier styles of vocals! Mike Lewis handled the string arrangements – giving the record the same disco vibe as some of his other work of the time, including Anita Ward's big debut – and Fern's vocals have this higher range than usual for a southern singer – almost more innately tuned towards clubby rhythms. Titles include a big hit remake of King Floyd's "Groove Me" – really marking the change from the original version – plus "Baby Let Me Kiss You", "Pillow Talk", "Sun Moon Rain", "Angel On The Ground", and "Under Fire". CD features bonus tracks "Let's Keep It Right There", "I Want You Back", "Movie Show", "Baby Let Me Kiss You (single)", "Sweet Life", "Tonight's The Night", and "Groove Me (single)".

Laid Back — White Horse/Sunshine Reggae ... 12-inch
Sire, 1983. Very Good+ (pic cover).... $5.99
What can we say? Despite the stupid appearance of the band, "White Horse" was a classic breakdance/electro track that crossed over so big it had kids in Kansas running out to by parachute pants and squares of linoleum to play along with the kids in the Bronx. Despite that runaway hit fame, though, the cut's a compelling one – with that perfect mix of post-disco post-punk grooves, warm in just the right places, and coldly appealing in others.

Machine — Machine ... LP
Hologram/RCA, 1979. Very Good .... $7.99
Incredibly great work from Machine – an album of disco tunes, but with a hipper, message-oriented feel than most of its contemporaries! The group will forever be known for their classic hit "There But For The Grace Of God Go I" – an infectious groover with a wild lyric about urban flight in the 70s – and they more than match the quality of that one with a host of other great tunes on the set that have a similar feel. Part of the credit should go to August Darnell, working here in a pre-Kid Creole way that throws in lots of jagged touches and some really wicked guitar to most of the tunes! Tracks include "There But For The Grace Of God Go I", plus "Mr. Destiny", "You've Come A Long Way Baby", "It's The Last Time Again", and "Marisa".

Paul Mauriat — Overseas Call/Brasil Exclusivamente Vol 3 ... CD
Vocalion (UK), 1978/1980. New Copy .... $16.99
Two albums recorded a bit later than the initial 60s hit run for easy maestro Paul Mauriat – both with a more pronounced approach to the groove! Overseas Call was recorded in New York, and has Mauriat bringing in plenty of disco elements throughout – using soaring strings with tighter clubby rhythms, all in a mode that's right up there with some of the best European disco/easy sets done in a similar style! There's a few nice instrumental solos from both Brecker Brothers, and guitarist John Tropea – and titles include "Overseas Call", "Eva", "Come Back", "Power Jam (parts 1 & 2)", "You Can Do It", and "From Jupiter With Love". Brazil Exclusivamente has Mauriat moving down to Rio – working with Brazilian musicians in a local studio – and coming up with a sweet style that mixes late 70s club with some of the warmer samba styles of the time! The approach is a bit like a European 70s soundtrack approach to Brazilian music – and titles include "Suplica", "Mania De Voce", "Gostoso Veneno", "Estrada Do Sol", "Comecar De Novo", and "Na Paz Do Seu Sorriso".

Gwen McCrae — Something So Right ... LP
Cat, 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Sexy soul from the great Gwen McCrae – a key follow-up to her massive Rockin Chair, and an album that showed that she could go a lot deeper than just pop soul! Given Gwen's contribution to the early disco years, the record's got a surprisingly laidback feel – classic female southern soul at its best, with a number of tracks that hit a great sort of late nite, lovelorn sort of mode – almost like some of Ann Sexton's work from the time. Other tunes pick up the groove a bit more, but still go for more of a funky soul sort of style than a disco one – and all tracks really make the best use of Gwen's deep soul vocals. Clarence Reid wrote most of the material, and great cuts include "Love Without Sex", "Something So Right", "Tears On My Pillow", "Mr. Everything", "Damn Right It's Good", and "Iron Woman".

Donna McGhee — Make It Last Forever (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Red Greg/Big Break (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $14.99
A holy grail, and one of the only records ever cut by Donna McGhee – an incredibly soulful club singer who worked with both Patrick Adams and Roy Ayers! This album's her legendary side for the team of Adams and Greg Carmichael – and it's got a sweet and mellow groove that's unlike anything else we can think of – clubby, but not disco – funky, but not deep funk either – a really unique mode that's hit by very few artists at the time! The record's definitely in the vein of Sylvia Striplin and Pam Todd – but is somehow even more soulful and better put together than work by those two singers – really consistent all the way through, with an undeniable sort of depth. The album includes a killer 6 and a half minute version of Donna's classic "It Ain't No Big Thing", plus the tight groover "Mr Blindman", and the cuts "Do As I Do", "I'm A Love Bug", and "Make It Last Forever". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "It Ain't No Big Thing (Danny Krivit re-edit)", "Make It Last Forever (single)", and "It Ain't No Big Thing (single)".

Montreal Sound — Music (voc, original version) ... 12-inch
TK, 1977. Near Mint- .... $5.99
Much funkier than most grooves we'd associate with the Montreal scene of the 70s – and a thinly-veiled disco remake of "Soul Finger", complete with strutting trumpet! The sound here is a lot more club based than the Bar-Kays original hit, and the tune also has chorus vocals – but there's an undeniable "Soul Finger" charm to the track, and it stretches out for a full 8 minutes on both sides!

new Ohio Players — Fire ... LP
Mercury, 1975. Very Good- Gatefold .... $4.99
One of the biggest albums ever for Ohio Players – a set that took their earlier funk sound and targeted firmly at the mainstream with a lean, mean groove that a million other groups copied at the time! There's still plenty of the soul of the early years in the group's approach here – and sometimes, the mellower tracks show a wonderful talent for harmonies coming even more fully to the top. But the real appeal of the record has always been the bold, bassy grooves that hit strongly just as ensemble funk was exploding in the mainstream during the early years of disco – making plenty of space for the Players and their contemporaries to grab up new audiences who never would have touched a record like this five years before! There's plenty of grit in the grooves on the best numbers – a style that's maybe not as dirty as on Westbound, but still more than enough to make any real funk fan proud. Titles include "Fire", "Together", "Together/Feelings", "It's All Over", "Runnin' From the Devil", "Smoke", "What The Hell", and "I Want To Be Free".

Players Association — Goin To The Disco/Disco Inferno ... 12-inch
Vanguard, 1977. Very Good+ .... $2.99
A soaring number that easily shows why Players Association were way ahead of most of the rest of the disco pack – and a tune that's got real depth, life, and energy that goes far beyond a simple gimmicky title! Vocals are mostly in a chorus mode, and the tune instead focuses on the tight instrumental side of the group – letting a sax solo break out nicely in the middle, and featuring some warm rolling piano that's got a real Sigma Sound feel! "Disco Inferno" is a remake of the hit, but not as great as the original track on side 1!

Pointer Sisters — Energy (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Planet/Big Break (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $14.99
A huge crossover moment for The Pointer Sisters – thanks to their mega-hit version of Bruce Springsteen's "Fire", which helped sell about a gazillion copies of the record! The sound of that hit pretty much sums up the overall style of the album – as the trio delivers a number of smooth mainstream takes on 70s numbers by other soul and rock artists – all produced with a tight, guitar-driven groove by Richard Perry. Titles include "Fire", "Everybody Is A Star", "Hypnotized", "Come & Get Your Love", "Happiness", "Angry Eyes", and "Echoes Of Love" – plus the trio's take on the Steely Dan cut "Dirty Work", a personal favorite of ours! Includes 3 bonus tracks – "Love Is Like A Rolling Stone", "Nothing But A Heartache", and "Happiness (12" disco)".

The tunes here almost have a slightly new wave feel at times – still disco mostly, but with some angular touches that almost hint at the artier side of the clubs – but without the indulgences of New York. Titles include "Get On Up & Do It Again", "Get On Up", "With Your Love", "I Can't Give You More", and "Tonight".

Spinners — Love Trippin ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1980. New Copy .... $15.99
A sweetly grooving set from The Spinners – one that moves along nicely at the midtempo clip the "trippin" in the title might imply – thanks to production and arrangements from Michael Zager! Zager nicely puts aside some of his more disco-oriented modes here – keeping plenty of respect for the group's excellent vocals, and allowing them some really great space on a number of warmly-crafted tunes. John Edwards gets in some great lead vocals on the album – most famously on the record's medley of "Cupid/I've Loved You For A Long Time" – which went onto become a fairly big radio hit. Other tracks include "Streetwise", "I Just Want To Fall In Love", "Now That You're Mine Again", "Split Decision", "I'm Takin You Back", "Heavy On The Sunshine", and "Love Trippin".

Candi Staton — Music Speaks Louder Than Words ... LP
Warner, 1977. Very Good+ .... $2.99
A lost bit of mid 70s soul from Candi – an album that's often eclipsed by the Young Hearts hit before it, but which actually comes across stronger than that one! The groove is funky southern soul on the best cuts – tight and full, but still with a harder edge on the bottom, and rhythms that are more funky soul than the disco used on some of Candi's other late 70s albums. The set was recorded in California, with lots of sweet jazzy touches alongside the vocals – and titles include "Nights On Broadway", "Cotton Candi", "A Dreamer Of A Dream", "You Are", "Listen To The Music", "Music Speaks Louder Than Words", and "One More Chance On Love".

Johnnie Taylor — Just Ain't Good Enough ... LP
Beverly Glen, 1981. Very Good .... $1.99
A great little album of modern soul, cut by Johnnie Taylor years after his early raw Stax recordings, and about half a decade after his hit with "Disco Lady". The record's a surprising treat, and has Johnnie singing with smooth slick arrangements, in a warm mellow style, given a nice edge by the bluesy roots in his vocals. Gene Page handled the arrangements, and there's some great mellow steppers – like "What About My Love", "I'm So Proud", and "Don't Wait". Also features a few slap-bass tracks like "I Need A Freak" and "Just Ain't Good Enough" – but stick with the mellow stuff.

Trammps — Definitive Collection ... CD
Music Club (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2CD .... $12.99
The full range of greatness from the Trammps – key gems from their years on Buddah, Atlantic, and Philly International Records – nearly every one of them a non-stop groover throughout! The Trammps were one of the most unique groups on the Philly scene of the 70s – a great harmony outfit like some of their contemporaries, but geared up for the dancefloor right from the start – with a soaring, soulful vibe that was crucial to the development of the disco sound at the time! They really hit the heights with some cuts in the latter half of the decade – yet always managed to come across with the well-honed group soul focus of their roots. This 34 track package offers up the Trammps in all their greatness – and titles include "Trained Eye", "Groove All Mighty", "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart", "Trammps Disco Theme (Tom Moulton mix)", "Starvin", "Body Contact Contract", "Hold Back The Night", "Love Epidemic (Tom Moulton mix)", "Mellow Out", "VIP", "Music Freek", "Love Magnet", and "Soul Bones".

Anita Ward — Songs Of Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Juana/Big Break (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $14.99
One of THE disco hits of the 70s – a set that spawned not only a huge hit single for Anita Ward, but which also firmly pushed the Miami scene over the top! The record's a wonderful mix of modes – served up with stone southern soul production from Frederick Knight, but also given plenty of disco touches from arranger Mike Lewis – who famously works in strings and keyboards in ways that really help the vocals soar! The mellower numbers are a great reminder that Anita's way more than just the usual club diva – a singer able to make things work strongly on a ballad front as well – and some of the best tracks here are penned by Sam Dees, who brings a level of songwriting that you normally wouldn't find on a disco record. Titles include the hit "Ring My Bell" – plus "If I Could Feel That Old Feeling Again", "Sweet Splendor", "You Lied", "Make Believe Lovers", and "I Won't Stop Loving You". CD also features bonus tracks "Ring My Bell (single)" and "Make Believe Lovers (single)". Young & Company were an obscure New Jersey group who struck big momentarily with the single "I Like What You're Doing To Me", and got a brief chance to cut this one and only album for Brunswick as a follow-up. The album's an interesting one, because it came at a time when the last-gasping Brunswick was showing a real talent for cutting underground cuts – mostly issued on 12" singles, and rarely drawn out to a full LP like this. There's kind of a strong roller skating groove on the best cuts – moving along at a good midtempo pace with compressed instrumentation on guitar and keyboards, never too over the top, and definitely not disco. Celluloid/Strut (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $14.99 15.99
Hip hop, street soul, and lots lots more – a really revolutionary selection of music from the legendary Celluloid Records – a label that was virtually a genre unto itself! Celluloid was a key force tying together the New York downtown scene at the start of the 80s, and the postcolonial music world of Paris – and as a result, they always operated with a culture-crossing style that few other companies of the time managed to hit – merging together sounds in really unlikely ways, and often coming up with fresh new styles in the process! The label's known for crate-diggers for its hip hop releases – and to world music fans for its electric Africa work – but they also were on the forefront of New York No Wave, avant jazz, and post-punk – and somehow found a way to integrate both young new talents, and older experimentalists who still had plenty to offer. This package finally does Celluloid justice – and goes way past the few simplistic comps of the label's work over the years – training the skilled Strut ear to the whole thing, and also serving up the full story of the label in the process. Titles include "I'm The One" by Material, "Day Tripper" by Shockabilly, "Tele Apres La Meteo" by Fredinand, "Disco Rough (long version)" by Mathematiques Modernes, "Electrique Sylvie (full length version)" by Modern Guy, "Mean Machine Chant/Mean Machine" by Last Poets, "Abele Dance ('85 rmx)" by Manu Dibango, "Change The Beat (French & English)" by Fab 5 Freddy, "The Escapades Of Futura 2000" by Futura 2000 with The Clash, and "Downing Street Rock" by Winston Edwards & Blackbeard. 26 tracks in all!

BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $14.99 16.99
Massive mixes from the legendary John Morales – one of the key talents for really opening up the sound of New York dancefloors at the end of the 70s! The mixes here were all cut by John back in the day – all for special play in the clubs, and never commercially issued at the time – which makes the package one hell of a musical discovery – like finding your way back onto an underground dancefloor in the waning years of disco – when a handful of mixers like Morales were still finding some rich new energy in the scene! Most tracks are quite long, and have all their best elements expanded out by John – but in ways that really avoid some of the later "look at me" styles that mixers would use in the next generation. This 2CD set features all instrumental mixes by Morales – a great complement to the vocal version package – with titles that include instrumental versions of "Only You" by Teddy Pendergrass, "Is It All Over My Face" by Loose Joints, "Was That All It Was" by Jean Carn, "I Think I'll Do Some Stepping On My Own" by Sandy Barber, "Ride On The Rhythm" by Mahogany, "First Time Around" by Skyy, "Do it To The Music" by Raw Silk, "Hit & Run" by Loleatta Holloway, "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else" by The Jones Girls, "I Want You" by Marvin Gaye, "You Can't Have My Love" by Hamilton Affair, and "I Want Your Lovin" by Curtis Hairston.

3CD set features 24 tracks, some very extended mixes – "Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up (M+M keep on doin it mix)" by Barry White, "Was That All It Was (M+M South Philly groove mix)" by Jean Carn, "If You Know Like I Know (M+M Teddy know best mix)" by Teddy Pendergrass, "I Think I'll Do Some Stepping On My Own (M+M stepping out the door mix)" by Sandy Barber, "Hit & Run (M+M I ain't sharing mix)" by Loleatta Holloway, "Only You (M+M you got what I need mix)" by Teddy Pendergrass, "I Want You (M+M breakdown beat mix)" by Marvin Gaye, and "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else (M+M I don't wanna do it mix)" by The Jones Girls.

new Boney M — Nightflight To Venus ... LP
Atlantic/Hansa, 1978. Used Gatefold .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice bit of space age disco fantasy from Boney M – a set that's got a few more electronic touches than some of the group's other records, but which still continues in a straight ahead poppy vein! There's a sound here that's arguably a bit more sophisticated than before – especially on some of the rhythms, which almost hint at Bohannon like complexity at the bottom. There's almost a bit more club appeal than you might expect – although other tunes are definitely more the stuff of hotel lobby dancefloors than warehouse parties in New York. Titles include "King Of The Road", "Nightflight To Venus", "Voodoonight", "Brown Girl In the Ring", "Heart Of Gold", and the hit version of "Rivers Of Babylon".

new GQ — Disco Nights ... LP
Arista, 1979. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not just disco nights, but some great mellow moments too – a wonderfully well-rounded classic from this great quartet – as tight and groovy as it is cool and classy! By the time of this debut, the group had already had plenty of 70s soul experience as The Rhythm Makers – a previous name for the lineup, and a combo with a great reputation for dancefloor grooves that were tight, but never too uptight – kind of the best funky soul styles of the time! This album definitely continues that tradition, with a sound that's leaner than most mainstream disco of the time – and really well put-together, in a way that also has them slowing down to hit some great ballads and mellower steppers too. The album features the massive disco title cut – "Disco Nights" – and a beautiful reworking of Billy Stewart's classic "I Do Love You" – with a sound that's faithful to the original, but a sweet stepping groove that's made it a favorite for years! Other cuts include "Boogie Oogie Oogie", "Spirit", "Make My Dream A Reality", "It's Your Love", and "Wonderful".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some light wear.)

new Latimore — Dig A Little Deeper ... CD
Glades/Henry Stone, 1978. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Latimore's digging deeper, and sounding greater than ever – working at Muscle Shoals with some great Miami production from Steve Alaimo – and coming across with a sound that's even warmer and more sophisticated than before – yet still very true to its deep soul roots too! At a time when some of Latimore's contemporaries might have been heading for the disco, he keeps it real and focuses on the best mellow modes that always made him so great – particularly those which use keyboards next to his unique vocal approach. Heck, even the album's odd cover of "Tonight's The Night" sounds pretty darn great – although we're even more partial to the original tracks like "Out To Get Cha", "We Got To Hit It Off", and "Dig A Little Deeper" – as well as his sweet version of George Jackson's "Ain't Nothing Like A Sweet Woman's Love".

new Lipps Inc — Mouth To Mouth (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Casablanca/Big Break (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic bit of club from Lipps Inc – an album that's got the group nicely stretched-out and extended – taking them way past the simpler sounds you might know from their hit single work! Tracks here are all quite long, and feature lots of instrumental workouts over very tight rhythms – almost a mix of Casablanca disco with some of the freer modes you'd get from labels like Prelude or Salsoul – served up with lots of guitar and heavy basslines from group leader Steven Greenberg! Vocals are by Cynthia Johnson – who helped Lipps Inc become one of the first standout soul acts from the Twin Cities – and in addition to a great extended take of "Funkytown", titles include "All Night Dancin", "Power", and "Rock It". CD features four bonus tracks – all the shorter single mixes of the long tracks on the album.

new Musique — Keep On Jumpin' ... LP
Prelude, 1978. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A super-huge hit for Musique – quite a soulful group of singers, despite the strange and cheesy cover of the album – which makes them look like a bunch of roller disco porn stars caught in the studio! The group actually features great vocals by a young Jocelyn Brown, and the record's made even better by production and arrangements from Patrick Adams – working at the height of his disco powers on the set! The biggest hit here is the group's classic "In The Bush", one of the sillier songs of the late 70s club scene – but with a hook that's still pretty darn infectious! Other tracks include "Summer Love", and "Keep On Jumpin".

Salsoul, 1977. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Salsoul Orchestra at its finest, with Vince Montana at the helm, crafting some superb arrangements that have all of the positivity of the best funky club groove the band can come up with, and little of the campy disco sound that other soundalike bands were starting to hit! The group's format is still head and shoulders above most of its imitators here – a perfect balance of larger orchestrations and tighter rhythms for the club – handled with all the best Philly elements that Montana brings to play. Titles include the superb soul track "Run Away", which features excellent lead vocals by Loleatta Holloway – one of her best tracks ever – and other instrumental titles include the funky "Getaway", plus "Magic Bird Of Fire", "It's A New Day", and "Alpha Centuri".

One of the leading lights of the Munich club scene – the mighty Silver Convention, who topped the charts with a number of disco classics in the mid 70s! Silver Convention took the Philly female style of disco – popularized by First Choice, Three Degrees, and others – and pumped it up with the Munich sound of throbbing bass and repetitive beats, one of the first steps towards house music in the 80s. This album's the group's first – and features the huge hit "Fly Robin Fly", plus "Save Me", "I Like It", "Chains Of Love", "Tiger Baby" and a few more.

Midland, 1976. Used .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A smash hit from Silver Convention – thanks to the dark pop disco hit "Get Up & Boogie", the leadoff tune on this surprisingly strong set! The strength of the album really comes from the masterful blend of strings, beats, and piano from arranger/producer/keyboardist Silvester Levay – who manages to keep a lot of space in the grooves, and create a sense of darkness in places you wouldn't expect – almost a coldness that predates the European dancefloor sound of the 80s, barely warmed up at all by the trio of ladies singing lead vocals. Titles include "Get Up & Boogie", "Play Me Like A Yo Yo", "No No Joe", "Old Wine In New Bottles", "Thank You Mr DJ", and "You Turned Me On By You Can't Turn Me Off".

new Various — Disco Juice – The Funky Disco Sound Of Harlem's P&P Records ... CD
Counterpoint (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Funky disco sound is right – as P&P were one of the greatest club labels of the late 70s! The label was run by Peter Brown and Patrick Adams – both inventive producers who'd made their mark at other labels over the years, and who had an insane talent for cooking up unusual ways to put over a groove. They mixed together soul, funk, disco, and occasional touches of electronics to create a wild groove that was always fresh, and which pushed way past the simple club grooves of some of the contemporaries. Their work at P&P (and related imprints) was perhaps too groundbreaking to hit as big on the charts as other larger disco acts – but from the get-go, they'd always had a strong underground following, and are claimed as an enormous influence on both house music and modern dance alike. Work on the label's been cropping up on reissue singles for a number of years, but this is the first time anyone's done a proper job of putting together work from P&P – and given that the set's of British origin, you can bet that the quality and packaging are super-high, not to mention the selection! There's a total of 13 cuts in all – including "Flying High" and "Patty Duke" by Cloud One, "Johnson Jumpin" by Johnson Products, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "African Rock" by Licky, "Feel The Spirit" by Foster Jackson, "NY Applejack" by Scott Davis, "Got To Have Your Love" by Clyde Alexander, and "Get Down Boy" by Paper Doll.

Rare grooves galore – served up by Chicago DJ Sadar Bahar, with just the right kind of depth we'd expect! The set's one of the funkiest in years from the BBE label – and bristles with great energy ritht from the start – loads of obscure uptempo funky cuts that almost hit a disco mode, but not entirely – laying back instead in that more spontaneous, more live approach to funky music – with a few nice touches of jazz as well! The package includes some real gems from the 70s, plus a few more bits from later years – and titles include "Comin On Strong" by Calender, "Odyssey (part 1)" by Johnny Harris, "Bail Out" by Maxayn, "French Fried Boogie" by Puzzle People, "Striving For Tomorrow" by Moses, "Free" by Seawind, "Scorcher" by Carl Grubbs, "Trying To Get Over" by Sparkles, "Funkyfied" by Chuck Higgins & The Wild Bunch, "Spirit" by Frederic Mercier, and "Mystery Of Ages" by Carlos Garnett.

new Black Ivory — Black Ivory/Hangin Heavy ... CD
Buddah/FTG, 1976/1979. New Copy .... $14.99 19.99 Out Of Stock
Two club corkers by Black Ivory – back to back on a single CD! The self-titled Black Ivory album is a pivotal set for the group – released at a time when Black Ivory, like so many other east coast vocal groups, was making the transition away from an older sweet soul style to a more sophisticated club vocal sound. The group's producing themselves here – and we're guessing that most of the real work is being done by Leroy Burgess, although Patrick Adams still appears to be working with the group on the string and horn arrangements – giving things just the right sort of underground disco twist to make things groove! The record includes the great club track "Walking Downtown (Saturday Night)", a longtime fave around Chicago – plus "White Wind", "Making Love In My Mind", "Could This Be Magic", "Longer Ride", and "Can't You See". Hangin Heavy is filled with killer grooves from Black Ivory – a trio who've really come a long way here since their roots – stepping out with proud, soulful tones that are a perfect fit for the upbeat grooves of the set! There's still a touch of fragile harmonies at times – but overall, the group have a much more mature, adult vibe – set to tight late 70s club arrangements from Patrick Adams and Leroy Burgess – both of whom stay far away from any mainstream disco cliches, and really hit a sweet underground vibe for the set! Titles include the classic club track "Mainline", plus "Peace & Harmony", "Get Down (Comin' Down)", "You Turned My Whole World Around", and "Rest Inside My Love".

It's 1981 and everyone from Queen to Blondie is taking a turn at coming up with a disco hit, and actually doing a pretty decent job of it, too! While we wince every time Debbie Harry decides to take her turn "rapping" on this early 80s crossover hit, you've got to give it up to her for trying, and besides, the hip community embraced her well enough to at least make a character in Wild Style look like her, and you can't argue with the track's infectious groove – plus this special disco mix version has an extended break section in the middle!

new Bill Brandon — Bill Brandon ... CD
Prelude/Unidisc (Canada), 1977. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A pretty darn nice deep soul album – the only one we've ever seen from singer Bill Brandon, and a real obscurity on the mostly-disco Prelude labe! The album was put together by the team of Moses Dillard and Jesse Boyce, but it's much more laidback and mellow than the clubbier work by the pair – very much in a mature 70s southern soul mode – that cut-above, no-cliches style that very few male singers of the generation were able to hit! A few numbers pick up the pace, but usually only slightly – and even on these, Brandon's warm vocals sound great – flowing and grooving with a quality that's almost like Walter Jackson, but a bit deeper soul overall. Titles include "Baby, Love is A Two Way Street", "Hands Full Of Nothing", "Just Can't Walk Away", and "Can't We Just Sit Down And Talk It Over". CD also features the bonus track "We Fell In Love While Dancing (12" version)".

new Al Hudson & The Soul Partners — Spreading Love ... LP
ABC, 1978. Used .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Excellent early work from Al Hudson – a soulful talent who stood his own in the late 70s, forging an up-tempo funk sound that lived long past disco, and which was sort of a platform for groups of the 80s to build a new dancefloor sound. Hudson relied heavily on bass-y funk to hit his groove, but he also gave strong focus to the good singers who worked with his groups – adding in good ballads that act as a showcase to members like bassist Kevin McCord, who sings some great vocals on this set. The album kicks off with the up-tempo groover "Spread Love", an anthemic dancefloor tune that almost points the way towards soulful house, and it's got some other nice cuts, like the ballads "Lost Inside Of You" and "Love Me Forever", plus the funky numbers "How Do You Do", and "Dance, Get Down".

new Bonnie Pointer — If The Price Is Right (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Private I/FTG, 1984. New Copy .... $14.99 18.99 Out Of Stock
Bonnie Pointer sounding great in the mid 80s– on a hard-to-find album cut for Private I/CBS after a drawn out split with Motown – one that finds her in a prime, catchy dancefloor R&B mode! To our ears, If The Price Is Right holds up as well as a lot of the pop soul of the period, including Bonnie's siblings The Pointer Sisters – though it obviously didn't hit as hugely! It's got crisp keyboards, programming and 80s boogie, but there's also some room for more more tender balladry and chugging club soul reminiscent of the late disco years. Of course, Bonnie's lovely, soulful voice is the most important characteristic. An overlooked album that's well worth catching up with! Include "Premonition", "Johnny", "Come Softly To Me", "Under The Influence Of Love", "Your Touch", "Tight Blue Jeans", "There's Nobody Quite Like You" and "If The Price Is Right". This FTG CD has a whopping 9 bonus tracks – single, club, dub and extended 12" mixes and more – including "Your Touch (Club Version)", "Premonition (Dance Version)", "There's Nobody Quite Like You (Single Version)", "The Beast In Me (12" Version)", "Heaven" from The Heavenly Bodies soundtrack.

new Section 25 — Always Now (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Factory/Drastic Plastic, 1981. New Copy (reissue).... $22.99 25.98 Out Of Stock
The seminal first album from Section 25 – a crucially overlooked British act of the post-punk years, one with a sound that's as important to our ears as the work of Joy Division or PIL! Section 25 were contemporaries of the latter, and labelmates of the former – and worked in a similar dark sphere of flat percussion, moody basslines, and psychedelic-cum-punk production that made for some incredibly evocative tunes. Like JD, their lyrics are often bleakly straightforward – and also like JD, Section 25 receive some amazing production on this set from the legendary Martin Hannett! We'd easily rank this one as one of the most fully-realized albums of the post-punk era – and one of the most unknown as well (possibly because the original record's packaging was so elaborate, it was impossible to mass-produce!) Titles include "Friendly Fires", "Dirty Disco", "Melt Close", "Hit", "Babies In The Bardo", and "Be Brave".
(Limited edition of 1000 copies – and done with the same amazing packaging as the Factory Records original!)

Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Way more than you'd expect from the title and cover – not a batch of familiar disco hits, but a treasure trove of club classics from the early 80s! Sure, some of the artists here are familiar – but most of them are from the indie side of the spectrum, and even the few big stars are represented by either non-hit tracks, or hard to find remixes that make this collection well worth seeking out! And given the early 80s focus of the track selection, there's less disco here than 80s groove and boogie-styled rhythms – heavy on the beats and keyboards, and still filled with plenty of great vocals. 20 tracks on 2CDs – with titles that include "Dreamer (long vocal)" by BB&Q Band, "Nights Of Pleasure (Nick Martinelli mix)" by Loose Ends, "You Can't Run From My Love" by Stephanie Mills, "I'm Out To Catch" by Leon Haywood, "Just Another Lover (12" mix)" by Johnny Kemp, "Fall Down" by Tramaine, "I Feel For You (12" mix)" by Chaka Khan, "Got To Be Real" by Selection, "Garden Of Eve (long)" by Yvonne Gage, "The Rhythm Of The Jungle" by The Quick, "Burnin Love" by Con Funk Shun, "I Need You" by Network, "Love Take Over" by Five Star, and "To Be With You" by Maxx Traxx.

new Various — Disco Italia – Essential Italian Disco 1977 to 1985 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A key look at the influence of Italian rhythms on American dancefloors – tracks from a magical time when Italian artists were hitting big in clubs on the US scene! The work here is from an early 80s moment when disco was on the downturn – leaving space for Italian imports to hit our shores with bigger force than before – bringing with them a range of romping rhythms, electronic sounds, and other odd touches that really set the scene for house music to come! A few cuts here have a slightly cold feel – a bit like the electronic post-punk imports from the UK or Germany – but most numbers are still quite warm and soulful, yet tuned differently than American club of the time – a bit more emphasis on the beats and basslines, even though there's still plenty of vocals and keyboards as well. The set features full notes on this time and the music by Bill Brewster – author of Last Night A DJ Saved My Life – and it features a great array of under-reissued tracks, including "Dreaming" by Rainbow Team, "Burning Love" by DD Sound, "Love" by Firefly, "Wojtyla Disco Dance (part 1)" by Freddy The Flying Ducthman & The Sistina Band, "Brazilian Dancer (DJ version)" by Kasso, "Tha Kee Tha Tha" by Five Letters, "Flor De Coca" by Number One Ensemble, "E Fatto E Sorde E (Maxessa edit)" by Tullio De Piscopo, "Tina Are You Ready (inst)" by Valentine, and "Do It Again" by Easy Going.

new Gianni Dell'Orso/Gianni Oddi — Mondo Di Notte Oggi ... CD
GDM (Italy), 1975. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
A sexy Euro soundtrack from the 70s – penned for a film that's apparently filled with lots of scantily clad showgirls! The style is totally sweet – often heavy on the keyboards, or on the strings – slightly slinky one minute, then soaring to the skies in a Love Unlimited Orchestra mode the next. Most numbers are relatively short, but manage to groove nicely – and a few numbers break from the porn and disco overtones to hit some slightly more playful melodies from an older Italian comedic period. Edda Dell'Orso sings a bit on the record – and Gianni Dell'Orso plays keyboards and directs the orchestra. CD features 21 tracks in all – including "Night Magic", in a few versions – plus "BR Sex", "Yellow Duck", "Roar", "Police Station", "Soul Meeting", "Pijamas Tops", "Summer Fashion", "Day In Rio", and "Torte In Faccia".

Fortunately, Johnny's real claim to fame is the great novelty number here – "Black Superman" – a huge worldwide hit, and a pretty great little number about Muhammad Ali. Diamond manages to make things groove, but never loses sight of the soulful styles that make the record so great – and works here with key contributions from a young Luther Vandross, who gives the album some of the same strong vocal arrangements he brought to his own first two albums on Atlantic! Luther sings lead on the album's legendary track "Hot Butterfly", and works in a group with Cissy Houston on other tracks – sweetly soaring with vocals that go far beyond most disco efforts of the time. Simply sublime, and with classics that include "Hot Butterfly", "Paradise", "Cream (Always Rises To The Top)", "Chains", and "When The Sh*t Hits The Fan (Rocket Pocket)".

One of the hippest records ever to come out of Chicago – the sole recording by Boscoe, a group who was even more obscure and experimental than contemporaries like The Pharoahs or Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Like those groups, Boscoe has a very unique, very visionary approach – one that's not content just to echo the standard post-Coltrane modes that other spiritual jazz groups around the country were hitting – but which instead moves into territory that touches on the darker sides of funk, soul, and spoken word of the time – all with a message that's incredibly powerful, and conception that's wonderfully fresh throughout! The group's lineup features tenor, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, and drums – but they way they're put together is often far different than other funky combos – and it's clear that the group had as much of a sensibility about the overall sound of their record as they did their freer grooves. At times, there's a righteousness here that recalls the best of the early Westbound Records scene from Detroit – but there's an even higher agenda too, which is more in keeping with the spiritual aspriations of their Chicago contemporaries, and which really show up in the lyrics. The whole album's a masterpiece from start to finish – unlike anything that we can think of, still ripe for rediscovery today, and just the kind of set that makes us prouder than ever of our Chicago heritage! Titles include "We Ain't Free", "Money Won't Save You", "Now and Den", "He Keeps You", "I'm What You Need", and "Writin' On The Wall".
(Amazing gatefold reissue – heavy vinyl, heavy cover, and with all the notes of the CD!)

Brecker Brothers — Complete Arista Albums Collection (Brecker Brothers/Back To Back/Don't Stop The Music/Heavy Metal Be Bop/Détente/Straphangin'/Blue)(8CD set) ... CD
Sony/Arista, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 8 CDs .... $59.99 69.98
Seminal work from The Brecker Brothers – 6 of the group's best albums, plus the two Blue Montreux live albums – packaged together in one very cool set, in tiny LP-like sleeves! The self-titled Brecker Brothers album is the first super effort from the team of Randy & Michael Brecker, whose twin-horn frontline forged a very popular sound in the mid 70s – some really well-crafted numbers, done with a strong smooth approach that still sits well after all these years! Back To Back features the twin horns of Randy & Michael Brecker, along with alto by David Sanborn, keyboards by Don Grolnick, and guitar by Steve Khan – but one of the things that really makes the album great is the vocal arrangements, which were handled by Luther Vandross, who also sung on the album along with Patti Austin. The set's got a great soulful feel – with some wonderful mellow groovers that have a sweet 70s sound! Don't Stop The Music is a stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the pair. And thanks to some solid soloing that's not afraid to go for the easy spots, the album's a lot more solid than an number of sound-a-like copycat LPs to come out at the time! Heavy Metal Be Bop is tight and funky jamming, with a bit more guitar here than on some of their other records – hence, possibly, the title! Keyboards and guitar jam strongly, but Randy and Michael still get in plenty of space for their solos – pushing their jazz licks with the jamming intensity that might normally be relegated to guitar heroes in the rock world. On Detente, the Brecker's are still rooted in jazz, but definitely step out with plenty of soul in the mix too – vocals from DJ Rogers, Carl Carlwell, Luther Vandross, and others – all of whom really add a lot to the set! On Straphangin, the BBs manage to groove with a sharpness and depth that most of their smoother fusion contemporaries just weren't hitting – an edge that reminds us of the deeper roots these guys had before they started hitting the mainstream! Last up are the live fusion classics Blue Montreux Vols 1 & 2 – both recorded as a unique live all-star outing by a group of Arista's best jazz players at the time! The group's an octet, but plays together in differing formations throughout the record – with Warren Bernhardt on keyboards, Michael Brecker on saxes, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Steve Jordan on drums, Steve Khan and Larry Coryell on guitars, Tony Levin on bass, and Mike Maineri on vibes – the last of which really make for some of the best numbers on the album!

Brothers Johnson — Get The Funk Out Ma Face (special disco version – double a-side promo) ... 12-inch
A&M, 1976. Very Good+ (pic cover).... $9.99
Bass heavy funk from the Brothers Johnson and Quincy Jones. This track was the heavier b-side to their "Strawberry Letter 23" single, but is issued here as a double a-side promo, and while not as completely sublime as that track, it's a mighty commercial funk groove in its own right!
(White label promo. Cover has ring & edge wear and a promo sticker.)

new BT Express — 1980 ... LP
Roadshow/Columbia, 1980. Very Good .... $8.99
One of the greatest albums ever from BT Express – tighter, smoother, and classier than the group's early funky disco sessions – and with a cosmic sound that shows them really growing at the time! The sound here steps off from both the group's own horn-heavy disco sides of the 70s, and from the more righteous ensemble funk work of the Earth Wind & Fire generation – and there's also a nice undercurrent of the snapping midtempo rhythms that would show up even later in the early 80s indie club scene. Funk is still very much a part of the BT Express sound – and even when coming together like an all-pro outfit, the group are still hitting hard on the rhythms and well-crafted guitar parts. A wonderful record throughout – the kind of late session that could easily be overlooked, but which represents some of the group's best work! Titles include "Takin' Off", "Does It Feel Good", "Closer", "Better Late Than Never", and "Have Some Fun".
(Original pressing. Cover has light ring & edge wear.)
