One of the greatest Brigitte Bardot albums you could ever buy – some of the grooviest, sexiest work the famous French actress ever cut! The album's overflowing with excellent original material written by Bardot by Serge Gainsbourg and Francis Lai – two of our favorite French composers of the 60s, and both a very good choice to work with Brigitte! Bardot sings in a sexy, whispery style that's a bit like Jane Birkin, but somewhat different too – and the arrangements are by Michel Colombier, Paul Pio, and Christian Gaubert – three talents who definitely keep things groovy. There's a few instrumentals mixed in with the vocal tracks – but that's totally fine with us, because they're all pretty great – and there's plenty of moments with a nice groove and a bit of funk. Titles include "Harley Davidson", "Ay Que Viva La Sangria", "Gang Gang", "David B", "Mister Sun", "Paris", "On Demenage", and "Contact" – plus the excellent "Marseillaise Generique" instrumental – used to great effect in Austin Powers!

Mindblowing work from a young Michel Polnareff – spacey pop from late 60s France, with a sound that's completely sublime! Polnareff's never been taken up as strongly as Serge Gainsbourg or Jane Birkin by English-speaking audiences, but we think his music is equally great – a baroquely beautiful pastiche of groovy rhythms, acoustic guitar lines, and lots of tripped-out touches – as you might expect from French pop of the time! Production often has Michel's vocals echo out a bit – a slightly spaced-out quality that rings out in really unique tones that highlight his songcraft beautifully. Titles include "Ta Ta Ta Ta", "Jour Apres Jour", "Mes Regrets", "Piplette", "Ame Caline", "Le Bal De Laz", "Oh Louis", and "Les Grands Sentiments Humains".

Brilliant stuff – and one of the greatest P&P singles ever! Marta Acuna's "Dance Dance Dance" is one of those tracks that we never tire of – a sublime blend of Latin rhythms, warm disco vocals, and that great spacey P&P approach to production! Sweet female vocals glide in and out of the tune while a pumping bassy rhythm rolls along – gently grooving the track with a jazzy sort of flair, as moogy keyboards bring in a wonderful cosmic vibe!

A long-awaited full length set – one that finally brings together all of the amazing Tony Allen reworks done by the Honest Jon's label! These "chop up" tracks were originally issued over a range of limited 12" singles, and they're really amazing stuff – not just remixes of Tony Allen's work, but re-recordings and re-interpretations as well – a batch of music that stands amazingly well on its own, even if you're not a fan of Tony originally – and which takes his music into even more exotic territory than just Afro Funk! The choice of artists here is key to the set – as players from other Afro-influenced genres really take a new spin on Allen's music – and are allowed to strongly bring their own sounds to the set. The only album ever from Allspice – but a hell of an incredible soul record – and one that's kept the group's name strong with collectors and rare groove fanatics for years! The album's on of the best Fantasy Records productions by Wayne Henderson and his At Home team – and like some of the others, is handled with a groove that's tight, yet plenty sophisticated too – light years from mainstream disco or common club of the late 70s, and instead informed by plenty of jazz and deeper ideas as well! The vibe is perfect – as heavenly and righteous as some of the best Roy Ayers club tracks of the time – which proves to be a perfect foil for the Allspice style of mixing male and female vocals – which again is often done in an Ayers-like mode. The sound is sublime throughout – one of those real treasures that should have been a huge record in the 70s, but was barely pressed up at all – and quickly forgotten about by the record company. Yet even after all these years, the whole thing sounds amazing – one of those albums we'd never part with at all! Titles include the groovy "Slipped Away", the funky stepper "Hungry For Your Love" – and loads of other great tunes that include "Love Fire", "Destiny", "She's A Lady", "I Don't Know", and "Give It Time".

A sweet Latin-styled set from trumpeter Herb Alpert – but one that's got a very different vibe than his faux Latin grooves of the 60s! The set here is done with key contributions from both Juan Carlos Calderon as a songwriter, and Jose Quintana as a producer – both talents who really help Herb reshape his groove in a mighty nice way! Backings are big, and somewhat smooth – as in the "Rise" era – but there's also some Latin jazz elements in the mix too, and an overall approach that isn't nearly as cluttered as you might expect for the time – with an especially strong emphasis on Herb's trumpet solos in the lead. The set was the first issued on the A&M Latin label – AyM Discos – and also features a bit of Spanish language vocals as well. Titles include "Fandango", "Route 101", "Angel", "Aria", "Sugarloaf", "Coco Loco", "Latin Medley", "California Blues", and "Push & Pull".

Classic mellow Jug – from a time when Prestige discovered that Gene Ammons would sell equally well to the mellow jazz crowd as to the jukebox jumpers! This set brings together tracks from 3 Gene Ammons 60s albums – 2 of which were best sellers, Velvet Soul and Sock, the last of which, Night Lights, was a lesser known number cut at the end of the 60s. Tracks are with a number of different groups – a few with a larger one, and others with smaller combo that features either organ or piano. There's a total of 13 tracks in all – and titles include "Calypso Blues", "Nature Boy", "Blue Coolade", "Scam", "Cara Mia", "Night Lights", "Salome's Tune", "Velvet Soul", "Stranger In Town", and "Light N Up".

Bebel Gilberto eat your heart out – Antena explored the same electric-bossa territory you did, nearly 20 years before your first big record! The group were a short-lived French outfit who were one of the shining jewels in the crown of the lovely label Les Disques Du Crepuscule during the early 80s – and were a real breath of fresh air in the post-punk years with their light and jazzy approach to the groove. As you'll hear in this set, Antena's style borrows a lot from the bossa, but also throws in some wonderful poppish touches – including jangly guitars recorded in a similar mode to some of the other French/European indie groups of the time, and a slight darkness in production that almost gives a Martin Hannett-like undercurrent to the whole set. The group's album Camino Del Sol has been lovingly reissued with a great set of notes, as well as a series of bonus tracks from an additional ep – making for a beautiful 14 track package that will really help you rediscover this nearly-lost group! Titles include "Sissexa", "To Climb The Cliff", "Camino Del Sol", "Bye Bye Papaye", "Noelle A Hawaii", "The Boy From Ipanema", "Seaside Weekend", "Frantz", and "Ingenuous".

Sublimely satisfying work from Ashford & Simpson – a stone killer from the height of their late 70s glory days on Warner Brothers! The pair are working together wonderfully at this point – wrapped up in that blend of upbeat soul and righteous undercurrents that made them a real cut above in mainstream soul – getting great help from arrangers William Eaton, Paul Riser, and Al Gorgoni – all of whom know how to hit that perfect Ashford & Simpson balance between tightness, class, and soulful spontaneity! Backings are always filled with lots of jazzy touches, too – the kind of sophisticated soul elements other would cop from the pair in years to come – and titles include "Over & Over", "It's You", "If You're Lying", "Couldn't Get Enough", "Destiny", "So So Satisfied", and "Tried Tested & Found True". CD features 4 bonus tracks – "Over & Over (12" disco mix)", "Over & Over (Simphouse M&M mix)", "Tried Tested & Found True (12" disco mix)", and "Tried Tested & True (Simphouse M&M mix)".

Great stuff! From Motown songwriters to world-class superstars, the trip was a well-deserved one for Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford – and this album's perhaps their crowning achievement in sophisticated club soul! The record's got a great groove that offers a more soulful version of disco than most of the competing albums on major labels at the time – a perfect summation of the care and craft that Ashford & Simpson had always put into their music right from the start! The pair handle all production on the record, and also contributed all the songs too – and the whole thing's so wonderfully tight, right, and on the money, the album soars to the top even before the vocals come into the mix. Titles include more than a few club classics, like "Found A Cure", "Stay Free", and "Nobody Knows" – plus the cuts "Dance Forever", "Crazy", "Follow Your Heart", and "Finally Got To Me".

A Brazilian underground classic from the early 70s – mindblowing work that mixes heavy percussion with lots of guitar – in a style that's samba soul one minute, but heavier rock the next! There's a bit of a Jorge Ben influence going on at times – particularly in the way the record uses quickly-strummed acoustic guitar next to the earthy rhythms – but the overall sound is also a bit more fragile at times, and rougher around the edges, especially at its most expressive moments. But that quality only serves to make the album more striking – an instantly captivating set that needs no previous cultural knowledge at all! Really tremendous stuff – the kind of lost treasure that will have you scratching your head, but loving it at the same time! Titles include "Apelo", "Grinfa Louca", "A Mente", "Tramba", "Madalena", "Mensageiro", "Cristina", "Olhar Animal", and "Microfones Metalicos".

Maybe the best record we've ever heard from Cosmic mainman Daniele Baldelli – and definitely a set that really lives up to the funky side promised in the title! Baldelli's got a much deeper groove here than ever before – a great ear for tight elements on the basslines, mixed with jazzy work on keyboards and guitar – all woven into a groove that's every bit as club-worth as his other music, yet a lot more warm and soulful overall! It's almost like Daniele's going back to discover a disco generation he might have missed the first time around – with a retro style that's hard to distinguish from the original, a lot like Joey Negro and some of his Sunshine Band work. Titles include "Mellow Game", "Good Day", "What Da Funk", "Voltage Groove", "Synthesized Honey", "Break Loose", "Drive Me Crazy", and "Fontainebleau".

My God – they finally did it! After all these years of hearing about the legendary Smile album from The Beach Boys – hearing snippets on other albums, studio bonus tracks, re-recordings, and all the other sources they've dangled in front of us for decades – Capitol's finally gone and done what they never did back in the 60s – released the whole legendary set together, as one package – and in formats that even exceed anything that might have been issued back in the day! You've probably heard a good number of the songs here before – some as they were chopped up and included on Smiley Smile, 20/20, and other post-Pet Sounds albums by the group – and in some recent re-recordings by Brian Wilson. But trust us, they all sound amazing here together – in the original recordings, with sublime 60s studio production, and godlike arrangements by the young Brian Wilson. An amazing collection – every single Jorge Ben album recorded for Philips – one hell of a massive legacy in music, packaged here with a bonus CD of rare material too! The albums in the collection are the stuff of legend – amazing discs that forever changed the face of Brazilian music with Jorge's unique blend of samba and soul, plus a touch of funk as the 70s came on – and together, the music is a mindblowingly heavy batch of work that few other artists could ever match! Titles include Samba Esquema Novo, Sacudin Ben Samba, Ben E Samba Bon, Big Ben, Jorge Ben (1969), Forca Bruta, Negro E Lindo, Ben, 10 Anos Depois, A Tabua De Esmeralda, Solta O Pavao, Gil E Jorge, and Africa Brasil. Rarities disc is unique to this set, from what we can tell – and is filled with goodies too!

Wonderful work from Brook Benton – and the kind of record that always gets overlooked in discussions of southern soul, but which is proof that Benton's always been a key force in the genre! Brook virtually invented the style with his earlier country soul recordings – and by the time of this 1970 set, he's in perfect form vocally – and working under some wonderfully sophisticated arrangements by Arif Mardin. The result is the kind of cross-genre record that Brook could do effortlessly – and which should have made him huge, but instead kind of got him left behind by all the other folks who were copping his style. Yet with the strength of a record like this, we'll take that overlooked fame as still OK – because the set's a gem just waiting to be discovered by later generations like us! Rhythm's by the Dixie Flyers – augmented by jazz players that include King Curtis, Pepper Adams, and Joe Newman. Titles include "Aspen Colorado", "For Lee An", "Whoever Finds This, I Love You", "Don't It Make You Wanta Go Home", and "Let Me Fix It".

Amazing work from acoustic guitarist Don Bikoff – a 60s contemporary of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, but much more obscure than either of those legendary players! Yet Bikoff's got a very similar vibe – a style that's rooted in folk, but has broken way way past the genre – amazing acoustic guitar explorations that are filled with tones and timings that so many other players wouldn't discover until the 70s – yet still never be able to deliver with a freshness like this! The album's completely mesmerizing from the start – almost like the hypnotic air of Sandy Bull, without the hypnotic pyrotechnics – served up simply and sparely, in a way that leaves us breathless. Titles include "Today Has No Tomorrow", "Rindler's Metamorphosis", "The Ellipses Of Your Mind", "Bathing Prohibited In The River Styx", and "Riverside Park Blues".

An amazing achievement for Ruben Blades – a full suite of tracks conceived and composed by Ruben as a "disco drama" on wax! The work isn't the disco-styled album you might think from this description – and is more of a mini-opera or concept album by Blades, one that features ambitious arrangements from Louie Cruz, Marty Sheller, and Carlos Franzetti – using strings and more standard Latin backings to expand the tunes tremendously, and make the whole album work with the full drama it requires. There's a few spoken bits on the set, which give way to some great songs – and the album also has a few instrumental passages. Willie Colon produced and supervised the whole effort – and tracks on this second part include "Epilogo", "El Velorio", "Manuela Despues", "El Entierro", "Hay Que Viver", and "Maestra Vida".

Brilliant garage psyche from Blues Magoos – a group that's raw and punchy enough to pummel, but pulled off some sweeter numbers and lighter harmonies incredibly well! Walloping drums, excitable vocals and wailing organ grooves – the cracked the charts, but still bring a fully charged proto punk vibe. Totally excellent, the kind of thing we wish were staples of oldies radio, but for whatever reason are left to deeper rock diggers to discover all these years later. Includes "Sometimes I Think About", "Love Seems Doomed", "Worried Life Blues", "Tobacco Road", "One By One" and "I'll Go Crazy".

One of the hippest records ever to come out of Chicago – the sole recording by Boscoe, a group who was even more obscure and experimental than contemporaries like The Pharoahs or Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Like those groups, Boscoe has a very unique, very visionary approach – one that's not content just to echo the standard post-Coltrane modes that other spiritual jazz groups around the country were hitting – but which instead moves into territory that touches on the darker sides of funk, soul, and spoken word of the time – all with a message that's incredibly powerful, and conception that's wonderfully fresh throughout! The group's lineup features tenor, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, and drums – but they way they're put together is often far different than other funky combos – and it's clear that the group had as much of a sensibility about the overall sound of their record as they did their freer grooves. At times, there's a righteousness here that recalls the best of the early Westbound Records scene from Detroit – but there's an even higher agenda too, which is more in keeping with the spiritual aspriations of their Chicago contemporaries, and which really show up in the lyrics. The whole album's a masterpiece from start to finish – unlike anything that we can think of, still ripe for rediscovery today, and just the kind of set that makes us prouder than ever of our Chicago heritage! Titles include "We Ain't Free", "Money Won't Save You", "Now and Den", "He Keeps You", "I'm What You Need", and "Writin' On The Wall".

A tremendous collection of work from Inge Brandenburg – a German jazz singer who never made it big on our side of the Atlantic, but who cut some excellent English language recordings in the 50s and 60s! The package features a great range of tunes from Inge – pulled together to accompany a recent documentary that's helped folks rediscover her music – with work from a variety of different labels, and an especially strong focus on tracks from the late 50s and early 60s! The style is tight jazz throughout – spurred on by players who include Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone, Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Joki Freund on tenor, and Herb Geller on alto sax – plus many others who make the small group recordings on the record really shine. Titles include "The Lonesome Road", "Body & Soul", "All Of Me", "Love For Sale", "Temptation", "Secret Love", "The Man I Love", "The Face Of Love", "Skylark", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", and "Non Je Ne Regrette Rien".,

No splashdown here – as Breakwater are every bit as soaringly soulful as they were on their debut set! The groove here is that perfect blend of jazz and soul that only a few groups in the 70s really got right – maybe Pleasure, or The Blackbyrds – and most certainly Breakwater, who were one of the reigning champions of the scene! Rhythms are often upbeat, but not in a disco or club-oriented way – and the instrumentation is tight, but never slick or smooth – always nicely funky with a nice little crackle, even on the mellow cuts – in a way that's opened up this album to new audiences for many years. This set's got a nice bit of moog that wasn't on the group's first – used almost in Mizell-like to further enhance the sound – and titles include the classics "Say You Love Me Girl", "Let Love In", "Time", and "The One In My Dreams". Great stuff, and with a really beautiful vibe!

Seminal work from The Brecker Brothers – 6 of the group's best albums, plus the two Blue Montreux live albums – packaged together in one very cool set, in tiny LP-like sleeves! The self-titled Brecker Brothers album is the first super effort from the team of Randy & Michael Brecker, whose twin-horn frontline forged a very popular sound in the mid 70s – some really well-crafted numbers, done with a strong smooth approach that still sits well after all these years! Back To Back features the twin horns of Randy & Michael Brecker, along with alto by David Sanborn, keyboards by Don Grolnick, and guitar by Steve Khan – but one of the things that really makes the album great is the vocal arrangements, which were handled by Luther Vandross, who also sung on the album along with Patti Austin. The set's got a great soulful feel – with some wonderful mellow groovers that have a sweet 70s sound! Don't Stop The Music is a stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the pair. And thanks to some solid soloing that's not afraid to go for the easy spots, the album's a lot more solid than an number of sound-a-like copycat LPs to come out at the time! Heavy Metal Be Bop is tight and funky jamming, with a bit more guitar here than on some of their other records – hence, possibly, the title! Keyboards and guitar jam strongly, but Randy and Michael still get in plenty of space for their solos – pushing their jazz licks with the jamming intensity that might normally be relegated to guitar heroes in the rock world. On Detente, the Brecker's are still rooted in jazz, but definitely step out with plenty of soul in the mix too – vocals from DJ Rogers, Carl Carlwell, Luther Vandross, and others – all of whom really add a lot to the set! On Straphangin, the BBs manage to groove with a sharpness and depth that most of their smoother fusion contemporaries just weren't hitting – an edge that reminds us of the deeper roots these guys had before they started hitting the mainstream! Last up are the live fusion classics Blue Montreux Vols 1 & 2 – both recorded as a unique live all-star outing by a group of Arista's best jazz players at the time! The group's an octet, but plays together in differing formations throughout the record – with Warren Bernhardt on keyboards, Michael Brecker on saxes, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Steve Jordan on drums, Steve Khan and Larry Coryell on guitars, Tony Levin on bass, and Mike Maineri on vibes – the last of which really make for some of the best numbers on the album!

The first LP by this stormin' organ jazz combo from Chicago, featuring the great Odell Brown on organ, Artee (Duke) Payne on alto, and Thomas Purvis on tenor. Includes loads of great tracks, like their originals "Enchilada Joe", "Raising the Roof", and "A Cool Senorita" – plus groovy covers of "Day Tripper" and "Maiden Voyage". A classic in the combo lounge scene, with the kind of firey playing that you'd only find in a place like Chicago.

The second album from disco superstar Peter Brown – and a batch of tracks that's a bit less clubby than before! Brown's emerging here more as a fully-fledged pop singer in his own right – showing at least a bit of confidence by putting himself on the front cover this time around, even though his back is to the camera! The tunes are catchy, and co-produced with Cory Wade – who'd helped so strongly with Brown's Fantasy Love Affair classic for TK Records – and there's plenty of that sweetly compressed production in this set too. Titles include the crossover classic "Love In Our Hearts" – which almost has a Queen-like chanting groove – plus "Penguin", "West Of The North Star", "Leadmeon", "Got To Get The Show On The Road", "It's Alright", and "Crank It Up".

The Dave Brubeck Quartet goes to college – a pretty good place for the combo, considering how many fans they had on campus in the 50s! The sound here is never too academic for the setting, though – just the same sort of Brubeck groove first forged in the small clubs in San Francisco – played beautifully by an incarnation of the quartet that includes Paul Desmond on alto sax, Bob Bates on bass, and Joe Dodge on drums. The long, bluesy "Balcony Rock" is a real gem, with some standout work by Desmond that reminds us that he could be a great improvisor in an extended format – and other tracks include "Out Of Nowhere, "Le Souk", "The Song Is You", "Don't Worry Bout Me", and "Take The A Train".

A killer set that's extremely well-titled – as BT Express were one of the hottest ensemble funk acts of their time! The groove here is definitely aimed at a more disco-oriented dancefloor than before – but the overall sound is plenty funky enough for our ears – thanks to some amazing horn passages arranged by Carlos Ward, whose own work on sax and flute really add an edgey quality to the set. Ward's horns are really fantastic – cutting and turning with a sharply-honed tone that keeps things fresh throughout – even when the rhythms are hitting more of a mainstream dancefloor sound. Titles include the group's mellow soul version of "Now That We've Found Love", plus "Herbs", "Time Tunnel", "Energy To Burn", and "Make Your Body Move".

A spacey Patrick Adams/Greg Carmichael dance classic – and very much in the P&P disco mode! The record's filled with extended club cuts that have a lot of keyboards and electronics, and although the lyrics are a bit silly at times, the groove is rock solid – with that amazing funky disco sound that was sort of a precursor to the house grooves of the 80s. Adams and Carmichael are on keyboards – and vocalists include Donna Green and Leroy Burgess. Nice all the way through – and tracks include "Lady Bug", "I Love You", "Honey Bun", "Space Shuttle Ride", and "I Got A Big Bee".

Classic soul jazz material from trumpeter Donald Byrd – one of his most sinister (and most rare) albums for Blue Note! The group's a quintet, with frequent bandmate Pepper Adams on baritone, Duke Pearson on piano, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – all grooving with some of the tightness heard on other Adams/Byrd dates, but also a warmer, more open-ended approach to the music, especially on the solos! The tracks slink along with a dark little groove – and although Pearson's piano is often sweetly lyrical, it also has a nice hard sound that works well with the sharp-edged horn lines of Byrd and Adams. The album's very much in the vein of the pair's work on the Warwick label during the same time – and with excellent compositions that include "Say You're Mine", "Duke's Mixture", "The Cat Walk", and "Hello Bright Sunflower".

A heck of a rare slice of Donald Byrd's career – a rare "with strings" session, recorded in 1957, but never issued until this brief 1982 LP on Discovery! The set also marks a rare early large set of arrangements by Clare Fischer – who backs up Byrd's shimmering trumpet lines with some great strings on the album – making for a moody session that's also got some nice modernist touches underneath. Given Byrd's Parisian recordings, and his work for a variety of labels at the time (this one was supposedly done for Warner Brothers), it's interesting to hear his more open style before it was clamped into the tighter Blue Note groove of the 60s. Titles include "Varmeland", "Lazy Afternoon", "Moon Mist", "I'm A Fool To Want You", "Dearly Beloved", and "September Afternoon".

A wealth of early work from the lovely Celly Campello – one of the biggest girl pop icons in the Brazilian scene of the 60s! Celly's work is more inspired by American rock and roll than previous Brazilian styles – and as such, these records are a crucial part in the formation of the jovem guarda sound of the pre-Tropicalia years – the bright, bouncy approach to Brazilian music that's perfectly summed up in the sounds of Celly! The package features six full albums from Campello's years at EMI/Odeon – the classic Estupido Cupido (1959), plus Broto Certinho (1960), A Bonequinha Que Canta (1960), A Graca De Celly Campello E As Musicas De Paul Anka (1961), Brotinha Encantador (1961), and the compelling Celly album from 1968 – which shows a surprising maturation of her style. All packaged in a sweet slipcover – with bonus tracks too!

A gem of a record from the pre-bossa years in Brazil – a set that's not just noteworthy for rich vocals from Elizeth Cardoso, but also for some early arrangements by Antonio Carlos Jobim! Jobim scored the whole set – and while the style is quite different than his later bossa material, there's still a wonderful sensitivity to sound – that richness that Jobim discovered strongly in later years, and a perfect fit for the soulful vocals of Elizeth. The pair at this point went onto have an undeniable influence on Brazilian music for years to come – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Caminha", "Linda Flor Yaya", "So Voce Mais Nada", "Nunca Mais", and "Cancao Da Volta". The classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. The set's filled with sharp rhythms and sweet jazzy changes – and titles include the classics "The Glow Of Love" and "Searching", both with Luther, plus "Lover's Holiday", "Angel In My Pocket", and "The End".

The first album from Chapter 8 – a set that's probably best remembered for introducing the world to Anita Baker, but one that's also pretty darn great on its own! Chapter 8 have a sharply soulful focus, one that takes them a bit above some of the other mainstream ensembles of the time – a balance of grooving rhythms and deeper feelings that's just about perfect – about at the level you might get from Maze or LTD, two other groups who both sported equally soulful lead singers! Gerald Lyles sings the male parts alongside Anita, and the blend is perfect – one that should have made the record even bigger than it was at the time, but maybe all that much better, since the lack of hit quality really keeps things fresh. Titles include the singles "Ready For Your Love" and "I Just Wanna Be Your Girl", plus "Don't You Like It", "Let's Get Together", "Come & Boogie", "I Go Disco", and "We Need Love".

A trio of sex film soundtracks from 70s England – but done in a way that's a lot classier than you might expect! The sounds here aren't the usual bump-n-grind you might expect from US porno – and instead, the tunes are really great soundtrack numbers, penned with a distinct undercurrent of sound library work of the period – sweet jazzy moments, soft erotic themes, electric touches, and some subtle funky bits too – mostly used in very short cues for the film, but occasionally stretched out to more song-long levels as well. The package is a great discovery – given that we haven't seen the films or heard the music at all – and it features a whopping 34 tracks that include "Heavy Keyboard", "Tight For Time", "Tricky Hand", "On Stage", "Bicycle Girl", "Home Again", "Fiona's Theme", "You Turn My Legs To Water", "The Tension Mounts", and "House Of Straw".

Man, we really love this song to death – and it's a Spaced Out disco classic that never gets old! Cloud One are at their moogy P&P best with the number – letting things rumble out with a wicked mix of vibes and electronics – all bubbling to the top of the mix with support from just a sweet bit female chorus vocals! Jazzy, spacey, and clearly a new standard for underground disco of the time!

A wonderful idea for a record – very unique, and with a style that makes for one of the freshest jazz vocal sets we've heard in years! The tunes here are all numbers penned by saxophonist Pepper Adams – a great change from overdone standards – and they've got some inventive lyrics penned by Barry Wallenstein, sung with a very vivid, jazzy flourish by Alexis Cole! The approach is wonderful – hardly what you'd expect from the usual jazz vocal set – and the instrumentation is also great too – a small combo, with twin tenors from Eric Alexander and Pat LaBarbera, both bringing in the kind of solo space and soulful inflections that Adams would have greatly appreciated. Titles include "Urban Dreams", "Julian", "Civilization & Its Discontents", "Lovers Of Their Time", and "Now In Our Lives".

A stunning session by Ornette Coleman, and one that always seems to get overlooked in discussions of his albums for Atlantic! His quartet here features the amazing Scott LaFaro on bass, and a young Ed Blackwell on drums – both of whom give the tracks an amazing pulse that brings new energy out of Ornette and Don Cherry's solos – working in a modal groove that's as catchy as it is modern! All tracks are named after initials of titles of books by Sigmund Freud, including "T & T" (Totem & Taboo), "C&D"(Civilization and Discontent), "W.R.U.", and "R.P.D.D.". CD also features the bonus track "Proof Readers"!

A long overdue testament to the live genius of the mighty John Coltrane Quartet – captured at the legendary Half Note club in NYC – disc 1 recorded on a date in March 1965 and disc 2 on a date in early May of the same year! The set finds Coltrane plus McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on the kit working in a far more adventurous guise than many of the 60s studio sessions – stretching out incredibly on the half hour epic workout "One Up, One Down" and a beautifully loose run of "Afro Blue". The stylistic themes are carried through similarly on the second disc's long grooving "Song Of Praise" and an amazing "My Favorite Things", but stretching near or past the 20 minute mark. These long bootlegged recordings are now available on CD officially for the first time ever – complete with the original radio introductions and announcements!

A various artist compilation Prestige put together to capitalize on the popularity of the Oscar-winning Elizabeth Taylor film Cleopatra with music that features Eastern and Egyptian themes. In spite of how you may feel about the concept, the set features some tracks that have become harder to come by on vinyl, and plays nicely whether you're considering the theme. . .or not. 5 tracks in all: "La Ibkey" by Ahmed Abdul Malik, "Taboo" by Yusef Lateef, "Anadolu Oyuni" by Oudi Hrant, "Ackmet" by dizzy Reece, and "Bakai" by John Coltrane.

Sublime work from Alaide Costa – a beautifully mature album from the late 80s, and one that has her working with a host of great guest help from the Milton Nascimento camp, and the jazzier side of the MPB spectrum! In addition to vocals from Milton on one cut, the set also features appearances by Rique Pantoja on keyboards, Gilson Peranzzeta on piano, Wagner Tiso on piano, Ivan Lins on vocals, Cristovao Bastos on piano, Paulinho Da Viola on vocals, Sebastiao Tapajos on guitar, and Toninho Horta on vocals and arrangements! The music is spare, but has this depth that works perfect with Alaide's rich vocals – often just a few instruments echoing out alongside Costa's lead, with the balance between fullnest and restraint that you'd find in the best recordings by Nascimento or Lins. Titles include "Absinto", "Amiga De Verdade", "Quem Sabe", "Estrada Do Sertao", "Cinema Antigo", "Mais Que A Paixao", and "Morrer De Amor". CD features two bonus tracks – "Dois Coracoes" and "Teu Simples Nao".

A damn great little record from Clifford Coulter – a set that's much tighter and more soul-based than his earlier funk albums for Impulse Records – but which comes together beautifully, too – thanks to help from Bill Withers in the studio! Bill produced, and the record has this perfect sort of balance – never too slick or uptight, but really focused too – that great warm groove that Withers found with his own music at Columbia – but set up here as a perfect foil for Coulter's truly amazing voice! The singer's got a depth that comes through right away – on both the ballads and the groovers – and the record's one of those under-discovered gems that we've dug for years – proof that some really amazing soul music was coming out on major labels, between the hits. Withers plays lots of keyboards on the record – and titles "Another Day", "You And I Together", "Nothing In The World Is Free", "Don't Wanna See You Cry", "Magic Carpet Ride", "Maybe It's Better To Go", and "The Better Part Of Me".

Warmly wonderful sounds from Maria Creuza – really coming into her own at the time of this mid 80s set – and finding a way to blend together rootsy sounds and sophisticated production – all with a result that's a bit like Gal Costa at the time! There's a gentle feel to the set – not sleepy or mellow, but kind of easygoing – as Maria delivers the lyrics with a relatively personal feel, over arrangements that sometimes have a touch of samba, more often a touch of light jazz. Titles include "So Pra Descansar", "Maliciosa", "Tua", "Milagre De Amor", "Fragmentos", "Vontade", "Estrela Cadente", and "Sessoes De Cinema".

Pure magic from the lovely Maria Creuza – a singer who only seems to get more soulful as the years go on! The set's got a different feel than some of Maria's earlier work – rootsy some minutes, but with a soul-styled sophistication at others – often arranged with jazzy undercurrents that really seem to let her vocals take off nicely. Arrangements are by Sivuca (who also makes a guest appearance on the set) – plus Gilson Peranzzeta, Carlos Kalunga, and Luiz Roberto – and titles include "Coracao Vira Lata", "Ifa Uma Canto Pra Subir", "Luz", "Pura Magica", "Delicado Perfume", "Sou Rei", and "De Tentacao A Cantada".

An album that bristles with soul and life from the very first note – one of a great run of 70s samba sets recorded by Xango Da Mangueira – all of them pretty darn great! This one's got all the right elements firmly in place – immediately catchy rhythms served up by simple percussion lines, slight instrumental touches on flute and guitar, and vocals from Xango that really hold our interest – far past the boundaries of language! Xango sings lead on all numbers, but often gets some help on the choruses – which really seems to further the joyous spirit of the music. Titles include "O Menina", "Brincadeira Tem Hora", "Piso Na Barra Da Saia", "Caviar De Pobre", "Carolina Meu Bem", "No Tempo Dos Mil Reis", and "Pau De Ibrauna".

Wonderful work from the later years of Moreira Da Silva – a quartet of albums recorded for the Odeon label at the end of the 50s, and which really show Da Silva hitting a mature sort of stride! The timing was perfect for these sets – as improved studio techniques in Brazil really brought a lot out of the rootsier samba modes that Da Silva had been working in for years – updating the grooves with some contemporary arrangements that flesh things out nicely, while still leaving a lot of upfront space for Moreira's vocals! There's a depth here that a singer wouldn't have had 20 years before – and the records sparkle with Da Silva's rich presentation of the material. Some of the CDs features bonus tracks, which makes the package even more appealing – and all titles have been remastered, and presented with original artwork.

An overlooked gem from 80s Brazil – a rare bit of indie samba work from Luiz Carlos Da Vila – and a record that's definitely a cut above the usual material in the genre! There's a wonderfully rich sound to the record right from the start – soulful vocals from Luiz Carlos, and some rootsy percussion – but also these warmer backings that almost have jazzy changes at times – of the sort that you might get if Joao Donato ever arranged a samba record. The original was issued on the small Arca label – so has escaped the attention of global ears for years – but the set's a record well worth seeking out. Titles include "Morro Molhado", "Diamante", "Das Origens", "Bracos De La", "Notavel Amiga", "A Flor Da Esperanca", and "Tudo Se Ilumina".

Early samba work from the mighty Martino Da Vila – music recorded with help from some key contemporaries in the underground scene, in the years before his big albums of the 70s! The sound here is nice and raw – and very spontaneous, too – as the artists come together in a very festive style that's often quite intimate, even when the sound is frenetic – a wonderful blend of voices, percussion, and other instrumentation – all recorded with a nice undercurrent of darkness amidst the joy. Guests include Antonio, Zuzuca, Cabana, Brasil Ritmo 67, and Mario – and titles include "Berco Do Samba", "Ritmo", "Sou De Opiniao", "Se Eu Errei", "Pra Que Dinheiro", "So Deus", and "Deixa Serenar".

Amazing grooves from Dazzle – disco at the start, but a lot more righteous too – thanks to some great keyboards in the mix! "Explain" is worth the price of the single alone – fast bassline at the start, then these spacey keys that only get better as the track moves on – soloing in these cool moogy ways that give the tune a great cosmic groove! "In The Disco" follows up with similar energy – and "Play It" is great too – both tracks with vocals, but plenty of keyboards and a really great sound!

The only album we've ever seen from Gilson De Souza – and a great bit of 70s samba with a really deep sort of feel! Gilson's got a laidback way of singing that's mighty nice – still enough punch to get things going, but couched in these really lovely backings that often have some floating flute above acoustic guitar and percussion – in ways that bring in a touch of 60s Elenco, but with a definite samba direction! Arrangements are by Wilson Mauro – who's clearly a key force in the sound of the set – and titles include "So Deus Sabe", "Eh Tata Eh", "Dor De Poeta", "Se O Amor For Coisa Certa", "Gaviao Calcudo", and "Noite Vadia". CD also features 4 bonus tracks from singles – "Preto E Branco", "Meu Violao", "Oi", and "Consequencias".

An incredible album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! – fleshed out and expanded more than ever before by Sleeping Bag and Get On Down Records! The group's core sound is a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! This 4LP box set edition is amazing – coming in a beautiful hand-pulled silkscreen box – and it includes more Arthur Russell collaborative and/or pseudonymous material for Sleeping Bag with or as Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn and Indian Ocean. Other tracks include "School Bell/Treehouse" (Indian Ocean), "You Can't Hold Me Down (Extended Version)" (Felix), "5 Minutes (R-r-r Radio Mix)" (Bonzo Goes To Washington) and more. Classic 60s soul jazz from Lou Donaldson – and one of the first albums that has him working with Grant Green on guitar and Baby Face Willette on organ! Both players were discovered by Lou and brought to New York for Blue Note – a move that not only helped give the Donaldson sound a really soulful edge on a few key records, but which also helped jump-start the careers of both heavy-hitting players! Green's guitar is always a treat next to Lou's well-crafted lines on the alto – and Willette's organ brings a nicely unbridled quality to this session, giving it a rougher edge than the usual Blue Note. The cover's great too – and tracks include "Cool Blues", "Watusi Jump", and "Here 'Tis".

A wonderful album – one of those underground classics that seems to show up in everyone's record collection, even though it was never a huge chart hit. Double Exposure are part of the "second wave" of East Coast vocal groups – and like their contemporaries, they mix the sweet harmony soul tradition of earlier years with the burgeoning clubby sound that was coming out of Philly. The set's produced by the Baker/Harris/Young team – who also play on the album along with the rest of the Sigma Sound crew – and the songs feature some stunning anthemic club numbers, plus a few surprisingly sweet harmony tunes. Includes their huge cut "Ten Percent", the amazing positivist groover "Everyman" – and the cuts "My Love Is Free", "Gonna Give My Love Away", and "Just Can't Say Hello". More amazing work from the legendary Bob Downes – the British reedman/arranger/composer who's getting really rediscovered these days – represented here in a host of previously unissued tracks! Bob put together the package from his vaults, and we've got to say that the music here is every bit as wonderful as anything Downes released back in the day – and is perhaps overall maybe even more striking, as most of it is played by a trio that features Bob on flutes, tenor, alto, and soprano saxes, with Barry Guy on bass and Denis Smith on drums! There's a great groove on many numbers – kind of a modal, soulful bounce that really has us appreciating Guy's bass work from a whole new direction – especially since we've mostly known him as a more avant player. And Downes is as creatively as compelling as ever – even playing "simultaneous saxes" at one point in the record! Titles include "Seashore", "West Eleven", "Walkin Runnin Man", "Funky Groove (parts 1 & 2)", "Brasilian Beauty", and "Wavelength".

A killer batch of work from Eastside Connection – one of the hippest soul groups on the LA scene of the 70s, and a key link to that city's older tradition of Latino soul! Eastside Connection have a sound that's a bit more smooth and aimed at the clubs than earlier LA groups of their type – but they're also wonderfully upfront, open, and honest in their approach – mixing well-styled vocals from both male and female group members, and pushing things forward with a nice dose of jazz in the grooves! And although an indie set, the record's still got some really great production – a careful, classy approach that keeps the album riding high all the way through. Titles include their classic "You're So Right For Me", plus "Frisco Disco", "Sweet Sweet Love", "Dancin", "It's Real", "Let's Not Fall Apart", "Too Sophisticated", and "Over Please".

Rare funk from the New Orleans scene of the late 70s – work by an obscure combo with a great ear for the dancefloor! The overall sound is much more like music coming from Chicago, Detroit, or New York at the time – a post-Earth Wind & Fire style of funk that's got lots of tight ensemble grooving and vocals, on rhythms that are equally balanced between boogie and disco! Despite the obscure nature of the record, it's got a wonderfully professional feel – all top-shelf all the way through, like something that could have been issued on Columbia Records during the same stretch – with a warmly jazzy undercurrent that makes for a much greater depth than you might expect! A landmark album – one that has the Fania All-Stars playing in a Latin club style that greatly influenced dance music for years to come! The title "Cross-Over" might make you think of this one as a sell-out attempt, but it's not – it's a brilliant effort by the New York Latin scene to reach a much larger audience, and at the time, it really really worked! The album's actually got a surprisingly strong jazz basis to a lot of the playing – mixed with soul, disco, and funk influences that helped make this one a big album in the crates of plenty of non-Latin listeners. Features work by Eric Gale, Ruben Blades, Louie Ramirez, and Johnny Pacheco – and includes the cuts "You Want It You Got It", "Brazilian Paradise", "What A Big Thing", "Los Bravos", and "Prepara".

A key turn in the groove for The Fatback Band – one that has the group getting a good dose of "night fever", and smoothing out their funk for the 70s disco crowd! Yet although clubby, the record's still plenty funky – a refinement of the groove first started on Yum Yum, streamlined into a sweet blend of bass, drums, guitar, and plenty of horns – but all still with a sense of liveness and jamming that plenty shows the roots of the combo from the old days. A few tracks here have a nicely sweet soul sound – sometimes with backing vocals from Donna McGhee and Phyllis Hyman – and titles include "Night Fever", "A Little Funky Dance", "The Joint", "Disco Crazy", and "The Booty".

A crazy exploitation genre fusion in the Emanuelle series – in which the globe trotting erotic adventurer winds up in situations with the world's last Amazonian cannibals – an anything goes entry in 70s sleazy cinema scored with some of the funkiest music we've ever heard from Italian film composer Nico Fidenco! Tony Fletcher's impressive, sprawling look at the street music fom New York – one that covers the heart of the 20th century! Fletcher has penned the kind of far-reaching tome hear that truly commands respect – covering 50 years of NYC music from the early days of 78s to the punk & disco 70s vinyl – covering jazz, Tin Pin Alley songwriting, Broadway, boogie, mambo, glam rock and everything in between. A trio of amazing albums – all of which really live up to the legend of Kim Fowley! First up is the well-titled Outrageous – one of the wildest albums ever from LA scenester Fowley – done in a very weird, very messed-up style that sort of sounds like The Stooges meet The Modern Lovers meet Alice Cooper! Fowley's fantastic on vocals – which are sort of of screeched and screamed, with revolutionary Riot On Sunset Strip-type lyrics, fused with a bit of Jim Morrison stoner spiritualism – a lot more compelling than you'd expect, and really mindblowing all the way through! The album's a perfect illustration of the genius that made Kim legendary, even when he wasn't having much of an impact on the mainstream – and titles include the incredible "Animal Man", plus "Hide & Seek", "Chinese Water Torture", "Bubble Gum", "Inner Space Discovery", and "Caught In The Middle". Next is Born To Be Wild – mindblowing organ work from the mighty Kim Fowley – a rare instrumental set that has Kim carving out amazing sounds on the organ that really match is vocal force on other records of the time! The set's a bit more soulful than usual for Fowley – a record that almost pushes a soul instrumental sound more strongly than Kim's usual Sunset Strip sleaze – although there is a nice fuzzy undercurrent to the record at times too! The set burns like some lost Tower Records soundtrack – and titles include "Born To Be Wild", "Soul Limbo", "Space Odyssey", "I Can't Stop Dancing", "Savage In The Sun", "Fresno1963", and "Pictures of Matchstick Men". Good Clean Fun is filled with awesome work from madman Kim Fowley – an album that offers hard rockers, some nice groovers, and even some trippier tracks that feature spoken or performed bits! The record's got a really wonderful approach that's a look at the lost genius of the LA scene of the late 60s – emphasized by an appearance on the record by Rodney Bingeheimer, the mayor of Sunset Strip, plus work by Motorcycle John and the Frog Prince! If you've ever heard about Fowley, but never found the record to truly convey his insanity on record, this is the one to check out – as it's as brilliant as it is insane! The timeless sounding underground classic debut of Frank-N-Dank – which is a strong first full length statement for the duo – and a significant milestone in the J Dilla production canon! It has more of a straight up, street ready rhyme style than was typical for Dilla productions at the time – with smoky, pulsing production and unpredictable beats. The rhymes are stronger than we gave 'em credit for a decade or so back – and the raw electro funky bounce provided by Dilla really opened us up to how diverse his style could be outside of the jazzy/funky/soul beats he'd laid down in the preceding couple of years! Early 80s clubby funk & soul from Freeez – a pretty sweet mix of period synth and boogie soul with far richer, live instrumentation and solid, hooky songwriting! Freeez recorded Gonna Get You in Manhattan – and you can certainly hear the NYC culture of the time flowing nicely in the groove. The songs are really good, and catchy enough to have caught on a much bigger level – with male and female lead and chorus backing vocals, and the synths and drum machines pulse and thump underneath congas, bongos and other percussion, Rhodes, piano and other elements. Includes "We've Got The Juice", "Can't Keep My Love", "Love's Gonna Get You", "Pop Goes My Love", "IOU", "Freezin'", "Can You", "Watch Me" and "Gonna Get You (Megamix)" – the 13 minute closer of disc 1. Disc 2 features 13 bonus tracks: "IOU (7" Version)", "We Got The Jazz", "Scratch Goes My Dub (7" Version)", "Love's Gonna Get You (7" Version)", "IOU – Megamix", "A Capella U" and more.

The great K Frimpong & His Cubano Fiestas self-titled set from 1976 – trailblazing work that helped cement Frimpong's legend! The singer is backed on it by the group Vis-a-Vis, as he would be on the equally great and similarly titled album from the following year, appearing as his Cubano Fiestas. The opening track, "Kyenkyen Bi Adi M'Awu" is positively revelatory, and pretty much the starting point for Frimpong discovery and fandom for many of us. Just for that, the full album can be considered something of a lost treasure, so it's wonderful to be able to say that it's just as great from beginning-to-end! Soul shaking lead and chorus vocals, funky drums and keyboards, feverish rhythms, guitar, percussion, sax and some flute. Other tracks include "Gyae Mensu", "Yaw Barimah", "Susu Ne Won Nka", "Baabi A Obi Awuo", "Afe Nkyere Ba", "Obi Nnim" and "Koforidua Nsuo".

Long-spun sounds from this Japanese avant collective – a group that's got the lineup of a jazz orchestra, but which often comes off with a smaller, more intimate feel! The recordings here are mostly live – and feature the group's reed-heavy lineup moving in very compelling ways – not the free-form blast of sax sounds you might hear from a European ensemble of this nature – and instead sometimes a mix of tuneful togetherness, or solo speculations – often mixed with trumpet and trombone in some weird textural musings. Titles include "El Centauro", "Only For Life", "Never Say Die", and "This Is Heaven". 2CD set adds in 5 more bonus tracks – all recorded in the early 80s!

These guys just get better and better with each release – finding a tightness they never had before, yet still keeping all of their sharp edges intact! The sound here is nicely focused, and very heavy on both saxes and brass – bursting forth in kind of an old school mode, yet set to rhythms and energy that have a very youthful feel! At some level, we might actually call these guys a precursor of the Japanese club jazz scene of recent years – especially the work of Soil & Pimp – but they've also got a sound that, while rhythmic, is also more jazz overall – although some moments here definitely groove! Titles include the long "First Dawn", plus "Dancer's Image" and "So Blessed". 2CD set features 6 more bonus tracks too!

An oft-overlooked gem by Funkadelic – the group's last album for Westbound, and a record that really has them growing into a great new groove! Bootsy and Eddie Hazel have stepped aside for the set, but that gives Bernie Worrell plenty of room to work his magic on keyboards – in a way that really increases the spacier elements of the set, and almost trades a messed-up moogy sort of feel for the heady guitars of earlier years – a slippery kind of Funky Worm groove that we totally love! The set is self-described as "delightfully putrid" on the Pedro Bell cover – and we couldn't agree more! Titles include "Undisco Kidd", "Let's Take It To The People", "How Do Yeaw View You", "Butt-to-Butt Resuscitation" and "Take Your Dead Ass Home!".

Don Gere's dusty, jangly soundtrack to the bikers and werewolves and satanists (oh my!) epic Werewolves On Wheels – a pretty great one with spare, post folk psych atmosphere, a little bit of groovy country rock, eerily percussive errata and choice soundbites from the flick! Finders Keepers has a knack for describing their great and obscure soundtrack and otherwise oddball discoveries that goes well beyond ours – they describe Don Gere as a "disjointed psych rock stoner" and the sound as "ritualistic commune country". We can't speak for Don's personality, but they pretty much nail the vibe! Most importantly, it works fine as trippy leftfield psychedelia and groovy country rock even without the crazy context of the movie – with a couple solid vocal tunes, fuzzed out instrumentals (particularly the "Ritual" tracks), sparer bits of tension and classic style B-movie biker elements. Includes "Werewolves On Wheels (Main Theme)", "Mount Shasta Home", "Ritual", "Ritual 2", "The Devil's Advocates", "One Foot In Heaven", "Burning Grass", "Tarot", "Tarot Trail", "Dust Bowl", "Ritual 3", "Werewolves On Wheels (End Theme)" and more.

An incredible bit of soundtrack work by Gilberto Gil – and one of his best albums! The record was originally recorded to accompany the work of director Rogerio Szanzerla, and it's a wonderful mix of samba, jazz, and post-Tropicalia psychedelia – all recorded in a warm intimate style that's similar to Gil's legendary London recording from 1971! The tracks are some of the most pioneering that Gil ever recorded – and they break free of the time and space constraints of some of his studio albums, stretching songs out into long open-ended explorations, 4 of which are over seven minutes long. Gil's vocals are extremely soulful, and his guitar playing is free and jazzy, often interspersed with some nice funky flute and percussion work. Titles include "Diga A Ela" in two versions – plus "Mr. Sganzeria", "Blind Faith", "Yeh Yeh Yah Yah", and "Tomorrow Vai Ser Bacana".

Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Gilberto Gil – served up here in a really great 2CD set! The first CD in the set a beautiful album of rough-hewn samba tracks, done in a really lively style! Gil's great vocals are very firmly in the lead of the album's arrangements – and some tracks use a full samba percussion and instrumental style, while others feature Gil singing in a spare setting, with mostly light percussion and acoustic guitar behind his voice. The sound is really tremendous, and although the album is a short one overall, it's still an essential treasure from some lost years of Gil's career! Titles include "Povo Petroleiro", "Vem Colombina", "Vontade De Amar", "Maria Tereza", and "Meu Luar, Minhas Cancoes". Most of the material on that disc was previously issued on the CD title Salvador 1962-1963 – but there's also a bonus cut here titled "Felicidade Vem Depois". CD 2 is even cooler – 18 early demo cuts recorded in 1966 – very stripped down and earthy, showing Gil in this beautiful space between bossa nova and some of his more personal and experimental moments to come! At points, there's a Joao Gilberto-like charm to the music – and the recording style is almost more like some of the earliest late 50s sides to come from Rio – with all the charm that might imply! Titles include "Beira Mar", "Zabele", "A Ultima Coisa Bonita", "Cantiga", "Retirante", "Lemanja", "Vento De Maio", "Rancho Da Boa Vinda", and "Minha Senhora".

A wonderful album of Joao Gilberto's early bossa tracks from Brazil – loaded up here with various numbers from other great Brazilian stars! The original one of the first few that he ever recorded, and it's a masterpiece of understatement, recorded with arrangements by a young Antonio Carlos Jobim, and a soaring bossa sound that would soon make history. Tracks include "Discussao", "O Pato", "Outra Vez", "Doralice", and "Samba De Uma Nota So", "Se E Tarde", "Corcovado", "So Em Teus Bracos" and more. This version in El UK fills out the CD with covers of some of these numbers and many more by Sergio Mendes, Sylvia Telles, Walter Wanderly, Silvio Silveira, Carlos Lyra and others. 35 tracks in all!

A very cool sci fi soundtrack from Marcello Giombini – as sexy as the image on the cover might imply, but also pretty darn electric and spacey as well! The album echoes some of Giombini's earlier electronic sound library material – and is often spare, with heavy use of keyboards – in ways that are more like late 60s sci fi scoring than some of the more disco keyboards you'd hear in other space soundtracks from the time! The spareness really works well, and creates an evocative mood on both the mellower tracks and some of the more action-oriented ones – which even get slightly funky at points. CD features 16 tracks from the film – all of them pretty great!

A very groovy record with a very fitting title – especially once you hear the lyrics of the tunes! The Girls From Bahia are actually the Quarteto Em Cy – one of the best harmony groups of the bossa era, and famous for classic recordings on the Elenco label – but working here in a rare American context that has them singing in English with heavily accented voices! The overall setting's quite similar to their Brazilian classics – gentle bossa backings arranged by Oscar Castro Neves, who brings an airy feel to the set – and it's great to hear the girls singing here in English, in ways that link back to the older harmony groups that clearly inspired them. The whole thing's incredibly charming, and titles include "Surfing In Rio", "Tup A Tup", "The Face I Love", "Canto De Ossanha", "Image", "Useless Landscape", "Tears", "Voce", and "Pardon My English". CD also features the bonus tracks "Berimbau", "I Live To Love", and "Amaralina Beach".

The legendary Brazilian vocal group – caught live on the Ensaio TV program! The performance is from much later years in the Golden Boys' history – far from the time of their 60s hits – but the vocals are still wonderful, and captured here with an intimacy that really lives up to the other recordings done on the famous show. There's a huge amount of tracks here – amazing how much these guys can get into the space of an hour – and some titles are English numbers, redone in a cool new Brazilian mode! Titles include "Little Darling", "Abertura", "Rua Augusta", "Quando", "E Papo Firme", "Te Amo", "Foi Assim", "Andanca", "Dois Pra La Dois Pra Ca", "Fumace", "Marcianita", "O Ritmo Da Chuva", and "Samba".

A powerful set of free jazz that definitely lives up to its title – a hell-bent session of unbridled energy from this west coast quartet! Vinny Golia contributes some wonderful tenor, soprano sax, sopranino, and bass clarinet to the record – these deft, deep tones that really give the album a heck of a lot of soul – especially on some of the sparer moments, which have the spiritual feel of a 70s loft jazz session. Lisa Mezzacappa's basslines are often a key complement to Golia's reedwork – and the set also features some equally nice alto sax lines from Marco Eneidi, who definitely has the right feel for the record. Vijay Anderson completes the group on drums – and titles include "Lop-Sided Heels & Frayed Shoes", "Meteorites", "Inessential Melancholies", "Pendulum", "Deformities & Dischords", and "Everything Imaginable Can Be Dreamed".

Sweet funky jazz from the 70s! Gonzalez were an obscure UK combo – probably known a lot better over in England, but pretty darn hard to find over here in America – and they've got a tight style that reminds us of some of the more well-produced jazz funk coming out on labels like Blue Note or Blue Thumb during the mid 70s. Some cuts have vocals, but most of the record's instrumental – and it's filled with great guitars, and some excellent sax work that goes way past the usual funky tenor line! The groove's a nicely sophisticated blend of jazz funk and modern soul – with the kind of groove that you might expect to hear on some of the Capitol Rare compilations. The CD brings together cuts from the group's first album Gonzalez, plus a few more from the album Our Only Weapon Is Our Music. Titles include "Pack It Up", "Funky Frith Street", "Saoco", "Ahwai Five-O", "Rissoled", and "Adelanto Nightride". Very nice – and the kind of group we love to discover!

A sweet bit of Brazilian experimentation that recalls all the inventive spirit of the work of Caetano Veloso and the Tropicalia generation – put together with lots of great twists and turns, and a spirit that's both playful yet straightforward as well! These guys mix things up as much as the "liquidifacador" in the album's title – yet never make the music sound gimmicky at all – and instead really crest on that great wave of Brazilian experimentation that seemed to begin over a decade ago, yet which few folks are doing this well any more! Like Veloso's best music, the songs have a sense of heart that goes way beyond the boundaries of language – and which shows that Graveola isn't just being clever for clever's sake. Titles include "Blues Via Satellite", "Desdenha", "Farewell Love Song", "Kg De Pao", "Babulina's Trip", "O Cao E A Ciencia", "Lindo Toque", and "Desmantelado".

An overlooked swinger by these two 60s jazz giants – issued on a label run by the pair, and also featuring Don Patterson on organ!

Perhaps Donny Hathaway's greatest album from the 70s, and certainly the one with the most amazing arrangements! The record was Donny's last studio session, and it's got him working at a level that's far advanced from even his groundbreaking earlier work – using complicated rhythms and sophisticated string passages – but also throwing in some killer jazzy bits that make for some of his funkiest work ever! The liner notes have Donny showing off his musical training in evaluations of the song structures, but the music alone should be enough to convince you this one is great! Includes "The Slums", a funky rollicking tune that is sort of a follow-up to "The Ghetto"; "Valdez In The Country", a totally catchy instrumental with loads of electric piano, and a very Bob James-esque sound; the jaunty "Flying Easy"; and the spiritual soul cuts "Someday We'll All be Free" and "I Love The Lord, He Heard My Cry (parts 1 & 2)".

An amazing collection of music – and essential to any collection of blacksploitation soul and funk, even if you own the original Shaft album on Stax! Disc 1 features the original film score for the Shaft movie, not the record issued by Stax – so although Isaac Hayes handled the music, it's different from what you might have on record – and features a great array of vocal tracks and shorter funky sound cues – all with rhythm by The Bar-Kays and The Movement! Titles on disc 1 include "Bumpy's Theme", "I Can't Get Over Losin You", "Reel 4 Part 6", "Source No 1 6M1C", "Source No 2 7M1A", "Shaft Strikes Again/Return Of Shaft", "Shaft's Pain", "Rescue/Roll Up", "Love Scene Ellie", "Harlem Montage", "Shaft's First Fight", and "Title Shaft". The tracks seem to include everything issued on the original LP, plus a bit more – with titles that include "Symphony For Shafted Souls", "9M3", "Funeral Home", "Don't Misunderstand", "Fight Scene", "Ike's Place", "First Meeting", "Smart Money", and "Blowin Your Mind". That disc and all of disc 3 features music from the Shaft TV series – some really under-exposed music that's totally great too, but almost with more of a crime/cop sort of style – although also with some cool moody moments too. Some of this music was done by Johnny Pate, and titles include work from the episodes The Executioners, The Killing, Hit Run, The Cop Killers, and The Kidnapping. 3CD set also features 2 bonus tracks from a single – "The Men" and "Type Thang".

A nice little one-sided flexi single from producer Hazel – a avant hip hop instrumental with a hypnotic sound! It's got a thick beat clapping underneath some echoey keys, sampled vocal atmosphere and a layer of electric guitar the floats in and out – courtesy Slakah The Beat Child.

A second chapter of excellent jazzy soul from the HE3 (Herman Eberitzch III) Project – killer stuff recorded from 1974 to 1977 at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco – with a sound that blends intense, yet sultry disco era live soul with both jazzier and funkier sounds! HE is on piano, Rhodes, synths – and the vibe on Chapter Two has moments of jazz funk reminiscent of the previous Chapter One set from Family Groove – but others that have a straight up, live and direct modern live soul feel, and others that are straight up jazzy. It's all great stuff – and alternate group lineups throughout include vocalists Johnny Lyvett, Linda Tillery and Wendy Hass, trombone player Sheldon Bermont, sax players Robert Olivera and Jerry Vejmoja, percussionist John Mingo Lewis, guitarist Pat Duffy, drummer Amadeus Barrios and others. Man, these guys never seem to miss – and always come up with some great little tunes that snap along in a really compelling way! This album might be easy to overlook in favor of the band's bigger classics, but it's a stone winner all the way through – with a number of tunes that groove on beautifully with tight hooks, skipping beats, warm vocals, and that beautifully compressed production style that always gave Heatwave a sound that slide perfectly into an AM soul radio groove. And sure, there's a few hooks here that feel like they're "borrowed" from some of the bigger hits – but they work wonderfully as a reprise of greatness, and keep us half stepping into the album even more. An excellent document of how the rawer soul jazz spiritualism of the early 70s smoothed out to become the spacey mellow fusion of the late 70s. The players all have their jazz funk chops – and include Paul Humphrey, Herbie Hancock, Bennie Maupin, and Bill Summers – and they've taken years at their craft to perfect their interplay in a subtle fashion, without the heavier full-on message of earlier days. Skip Drinkwater's producing the set – and as on some of his best work from the time, he manages to give the whole thing a smooth sound, yet still retain a lot of the soul. Lots of nice grooves, with almost a Larry Mizell feeling to them. Titles include "Mahal", "Ecstasy", "Butterfly", and "Cyclops". Also includes a bonus disco remix version of "Cyclops".

Martha's every bit as great – and although she did cut later records in the disco years, it's only recently that folks have finally discovered the true depths of her talents – as she's returned to the fold with amazing vocals, and strong support from the global funk underground! After a previous set with Shaolin Temple Defenders, Martha breaks out even more strongly here with backing from Speedometer – a UK combo who've played together for years, and are already razor-sharp on their own – making for the perfect sort of groove to restore High to the sound of her years with James Brown. The album's brilliant all the way through – not a rehash of older modes, but a rich union of two very strong talents – coming together in an effort that's definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Finally, a sweet compilation of some of the best numbers from latter day Motown girl group High Inergy – sunny soul that shines especially brightly with the benefit of hindsight! They managed to hit the charts early on, but it's pretty easy to see how these ladies could be unjustly overlooked in the grand scheme. They signed the Motown in the later 70s, after the Supremes and other formative girl groups had long ago finished blazing the trails, plus Motown was at a real crossroads in terms of it's honoring its iconic history, while still navigating contemporary trends. Meanwhile, High Inergy recorded some wonderful stuff – with some late disco era string-laden production as well as tender ballads – both focusing on the sweet vocals and songcraft, rather than trying too hard to be trendy. The original albums may have been hit & miss, but Expansion does a terrific job of treasure hunting – every track here is lovely! 20 tracks in all: Includes "Lovin' Fever", "First Impressions", "I'm A Believer", "Goin' Thru The Motions", "Cold This Be Love", "Devotion", "Just A Touch Away" feat Smokey Robinson, "Somebody, Somewhere", "Hold On To My Love" feat Switch, "All Of You", "Journey To Love". Hu Vibrational brings a pounding instrumental mix of percussion, electronic beats, and African-inspired jazz! The loose group feature multi-instrumentalist Adam Rudolph (who has played with Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock and Don Cherry to name a few) on all types of acoustic drums, shakers, bamboo flutes and well beyond, avant garde drummer Hamid Drake on the trap and more, plus experimental beat makers/left field hip hop figures like Daedelus and Carlos Nino/Ammon Contact. What's really nice about this album is how well it coalesces throughout – the crew really finds a hypnotic groove all the way through, and it's not at all the disconnected mess that lesser figures in the experimental community often come up with! A tight, inventive surprise from the ever reliable Soul Jazz label. Warm and wonderful work from Phyllis Hyman – a set that's a lot more mainstream soul than her music of a few years before, but she delivers it with a strong commitment to the more complicated styles of her roots! The sound here is full and proud – a nice extension of the work that Hyman did with Norman Connors, and not nearly as much in a disco mode as it might be, given the time of the release. And although many of the tracks are somewhat upbeat, they've got a bit more complication in the rhythms than conventional club – thanks to the presence of jazz players who include Herbie Hancock, Monty Alexander, Azar Lawrence, and others. The best production on the record is by T Life, and the team of Skip Scarborough and Larry Alexander – and titles include "Kiss You All Over", "Living Inside Your Love", "Soon Come Again", "Here's That Rainy Day", "So Strange", "Lookin For A Lovin", and "Be Careful (How You Treat My Love)". CD features some great bonus tracks too – including "Love Is Free", "Sing A Song", "Sweet Music", "Kiss You All Over (12" mix)", and "So Strange (12" mix)".

An amazing set that documents the early years of the Zamrock scene – the funk and psych informed Afro Rock pioneered by vocalist and African guitar legend Rikki Ililonga and his group Musi-O-Tunya in Zambia from 1973 to 1976 – and compiled beautifully in this great set from Now Again/Stones Throw! It's incredible stuff that blends fuzzed out guitar psychedelia, raw rhythms and brass-heavy funky soul. Ililonga's legacy is represented strongly on the record made by the group he founded, Musi-O-Tunya – who work with electric guitar, bass, sax, western and African drums and percussion – as well as the Zambia album, credited to Rikki Illilonga, in which he sings and plays all instruments except trumpet. The set also includes his Sunshine Love album, in which he sings and plays all instruments except bass and drums – and a it's got a rawer, bluesier psych soul approach overall. The CD version compiles most tracks from those albums plus Musi-O-Tunya's Wings Of Africa LP and bonus tracks from 7-inches from the time. 31 tracks on 2 CDs and comes a great, book-bound package with extensive liner notes by Eothen Alapatt and an interview of Ililonga by Eothen. Disc one includes Musi-0-Tunya tracks "Tsegulani", "Mpondolo", "Walk And Fight", "The Sun", "Dark Sunrise", "The Wings Of Africa", "Jekete Yamankowa" (Parts 1 & 2), "Mpulula", "Smoke" and more. Disc 2 features tracks from the Rikki Ililonga cuts "Sansa Kuwa", "Sheebeen Queen", "Stop Dreaming Mr D", "The Nature Of Man", "The Queen Blues", "Working On The Wrong Thing", "Sunshine Love", "Angel Black" and more.

Excellent work from Jorginho Do Imperio – a lesser-known sambista from 70s Brazil, but one who really shines brightly on this rare little set! There's a beautifully stripped-down feel to the whole thing – just Jorginho's rich vocals in the lead, and loads of lively instrumental work on percussion and acoustic strings – cavaquinho, guitar, and more – all laid out in these wonderfully tight grooves that are really rich in feeling! Titles include "Volta Pro Morro", "Olele Olala", "Pedra 90", "A Timidez Me Devora", "Minha Estoria", and "Mais Um Na Casa De Bamba".
