new DellsAll About The Paper/I Touched A Dream ... 12-inch
20th Century, 1980. Very Good- .... $7.99
We can't help but favor the Dells earlier soul work, but later disco numbers like the a-side of this nice single, and the sophisticated title track off the I Touched A Dream LP, a more downtempo cut, are no less great!

DellsI Touched A Dream/Whatever Turns You On ... CD
Chi Sound/Southbound (UK), 1980/1981. New Copy .... $15.99
2 great later gems from The Dells – both essential sides of their later catalog! I Touched A Dream is an especially tremendous record – a bit smoother than before, but still much more daring vocally than most other harmony groups at the time, cutting through some smoother arrangements with a sublime approach to the material that's all-soul all the way! Arrangements are sometimes bit uptempo and modern, but they're still in a strong Chicago groove – with backings by Tom Tom 84 and Sonny Sanders – and production by Carl Davis and Eugene Record, making for a late 70s update of the classic Brunswick soul approach! Titles include "Look At Us Now", "All About The Paper", "So You Are Love", "Passionate Breezes", and "I Touched A Dream". Whatever Turns You On is another later winner from The Dells – a record that has the group mixing uptempo grooves and sublime mellow numbers – all of which are sung with heartbreaking vocals that show the group as still one of the best in soul music – even after more than 20 years on record! Arrangements are by Tom Tom 84 and Sonny Sanders, and production by Carl Davis and Eugene Record – all key factors in the success of the album, thanks to a long local history with the Chicago soul legends – and a respect that's very clear in their handling of the sound on this set. Titles include "Happy Song", "It Took A Woman Like You", "Whatever Turns You On", "Ain't It A Shame", "Stay In My Corner", "is It It", and "Heaven's Just Step Away".

DellsLove Connection (with bonus track) ... CD
Mercury/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977. New Copy .... $13.99
One thing you have to remember about The Dells – they always sound great! Even here, in later years, their sound is superb – a rich, deep approach to harmonies that's still head and shoulders above most other groups in the business! The production on the set is by Norman Harris and the Harris Machine – and some tracks get a Philly groove on, while others stick in a mellower ballad mode that's completely dominated by the group. Niceness abounds, and titles include "Private Property", "God Helps Those", "Don't Trick Me, Treat Me", "Wasted Tears", and "How Can One Man Be So Lucky". CD features a bonus track – a US single edit of "Private Property".

new DellsFace To Face ... LP
ABC, 1979. Very Good+ .... $1.99 Just Sold Out!
A later effort from the Dells, cut around the time ABC was having some great luck with the Detroit soul of The Dramatics – and also recorded in Detroit, with production work by the likes of Al Perkins, Rudy Robinson, and Calvin Carter, the Dells' old boss at Vee Jay. The tunes have a smoother approach than the group's work at Chess/Cadet – but their vocals are still top notch, with that raspy soul quality that has made them sound consistently strong over the years, no matter what the setting. Includes "Face To Face", "Thought I Could", "Face To Face", "Hooked On Loving You", "Love Me", "Wrapped Up Tight", and "Changed Man". Lots of nice ballads!
(Cover has a light wear, a promo stamp, a sticker, and a couple of some light marks from sticker removal.)

DellsStay In My Corner ... LP
Vee Jay/Up Front, Late 50s/1968. Very Good .... $3.99 Just Sold Out!
Although this is sort of a cheapo budget issue that looks unofficial, it's a decent compilation of some of The Dells' early doo-wop sides for Vee Jay, just about all of which are pretty tough to find on vinyl in any format. The group's work for Vee Jay was some of their best, and this set includes classics like the original recording of "Stay In My Corner", plus "Oh What A Night", "Dreams Of Contentment", "Lil Darling", and "Pain In My Heart".

new DellsIt's Not Unusual ... LP
Vee Jay, 1965. Used .... $24.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful album – and unlike anything else the Dells ever recorded! Instead of their usual harmony soul and doo wop work, this album's a swinging jazz vocal workout – with the group harmonizing more in a Four Freshmen mode than a streetcorner one. The approach works wonderfully for the group's always-great vocals – and it's really great to hear them going to town on tracks like "Witchcraft", "Lil Darlin", "It's Not Unusual", "Let's Do It Over", "What Do We Prove", and "I've Got A Woman". The record also features a version of "Stay In My Corner" that might be an update of the original, but we're not sure!

new DellsThere Is ... LP
Cadet, 1968. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic bit of Chicago soul, featuring the Dells at their most mature, banked in amazing arrangements by the great Charles Stepney. There's a long version of "Stay In My Corner", plus the great title cut, and two fantastic tracks that have some great John Cage-esque prepared piano on the introduction. Great all the way through, and with loads of good tracks like "Wear It On Our Face", "Please Don't Change Me Now", and "Love Is So Simple". Hard to find on vinyl, even in Chicago!
(Blue label pressing. Cover has a factory sticker & some light wear.)

Bunky Green — Latinization Of Bunky Green ... LP
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+ .... $14.99
Chicago alto player Bunky Green gets "Latinized" – in a very groovy set of soul jazz tunes from the 60s Cadet Records scene! The style isn't entirely straight Latin – more just a soul jazz approach to small combo jazz, supported with great percussion from a trio of added players – but Bunky's alto sax is right out front in the mix, bounding warmly over the top of the grooves with a sound that's a bit like Lou Donaldson or Chicago contemporary Sonny Cox! The Dells bring in a bit of vocals to the record – not much, but just enough to create a nice sense of surprise – and tracks include "Feeling Good", "Do It Like You Feel It", "Fast n Foxy", "A Ting A Ling", and "How's Your Mambo?".

Marlena Shaw — Spice Of Life ... CD
Cadet, 1969. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
An amazing batch of sophisticated soul tracks – and a favorite with the righteous groove scene! On the surface, the record's a combination of jazz and soul tracks in the same mode that you'd find on some of Nancy Wilson's albums for Capitol during the same time – but digging deeper, you'll find an undercurrent of politics, feminism, and social commentary delivered with surprising intensity. Marlena Shaw's voice is generally sweet, but she's set up in some extremely powerful arrangements by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney that recast even the simplest phrase into a whole new setting of strength and pride – and Bobby Miller of Dells fame also helped make the record what it is, and helped write some of the best songs on the record. The set includes Marlena's classic original reading of "Woman Of The Ghetto", which has been sampled by just about everyone, plus "California Soul", which has a nice hard break, and the tunes "Liberation Conversation", "Where Can I Go?", and the original version of "Go Away Little Boy" – as sweet a statement of womanhood if there ever was one!

Various — Basic Black ... LP
GRT, 1975. Very Good+ 2LP .... $6.99
Compilation put together by the GRT label in the mid 70s, who owned the chess/cadet group of labels, so it's heavy on the Chicago sound. There's a few cuts from ABC records too, like the Impressions "It's All Right" and Bobby Bland's "Turn On Your Love Light", but basically the track listing reads like the playlist from WVON or WBEE from the early 70s, loads of heavy hitting South Side R&B and soul numbers: the Dells "Stay In My Corner", Gene Chandler "I Fooled You This Time", Fontella Bass "Rescue Me", Pigmeat Markham "Here Comes the Judge" and Ramsey Lewis' "Wade in the Water" and 18 more!
(Cover has a cut corner.)

Various — Groovesville USA – 24 Ultimate Detroit Soul Classics ... CD
Outta Sight (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $16.99
Some of the hippest Detroit soul of the 60s – a wealth of wonderful recordings done by legendary producer Don Davis! In the 70s, Don would make some huge marks in the mainstream with groups like The Dramatics, Dells, and others – but these sides represent the initial flowering of the Davis' genius in the Motor City – a magnificent melding of that scene's tightness with some rootsier, harder-edged vocals that really send the tunes home! We'd be hard-pressed to think of a better start to dig into the Detroit scene past Motown – and in addition to rare singles, the set also features some unissued tracks too. Titles include "Somebody Needs You" by Darrell Banks, "Love On A Lease Plan" by Johnnie Taylor, "Girl Crazy" by Sharon Soul, "A Love That Never Grows Cold" by Jackey Beavers, "I'm The One Who Loves You" by Melvin Davis, "Headache In My Heart" by Debonaires, "I Need You Like A Baby" by Andrea Henry, "Who's Kissing You Tonite" by Herman Lewis, "Has It Happened To You Yet" by Edwin Starr, "That's Why I Love You" by The Professionals, "Deeper In Love" by Robert Ward, "Friday Night" by Steve Mancha, and "When You Lose The One You Love" by Buddy Smith.

Philadelphia International/Harmless (UK), 1970s. New Copy 10CDs .... $89.99
The most loving tribute to Philadelphia International that we've ever seen – a massive 10CD box set that also features a 60 page booklet, a full Philly International discography, and a huge amount of great tracks from the legendary label – over 12 hours of music in all! The track list is wonderful – put together by Ralph Tee, of Expansion Records fame – with a great ear for the full range of Philly sounds, not just the hits – which means that in addition to work by The O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, MFSB, and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – the set also features work by The Ebonys, Bobby Bennett, Robert Upchurch, Love Committee, Kaleidoscope, Monk Montgomery, Norman Harris, Frantique, The Dells, Silk, The Ethics, The Futures, Carolyn Crawford, and others! Various — Sunday Soul Selection – 16 Uplifting 70s Modern Soul Gems ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
A cheesy cover, but a really wonderful little compilation – a set that's filled with obscure righteous soul tunes from the 70s, including some lesser-known cuts by bigger name acts of the time! The vibe here is really wonderful – definitely the kind of kicked-back soul you might listen to on a Sunday afternoon – not as uptight as tracks for the clubs the night before, and rolling out with a sound that's warm and mellow, but still with a bit of groove at the bottom. Most numbers are of mid 70s vintage – sparkling with a good deal of class and sophistication – and titles include "Sunshine" by Pulse, "Ain't No Need" by Ralph Graham, "You Put A Hurting On Me" by Mary Mundy, "No Rebate On Love" by The Dramatics, "I Just Want To Love You" by Toby Kang, "Don't Trick Me Treat Me" by The Dells, "Sorry" by Grace Jones, "Yes You Need Love" by Anthony White, "Don't You Know I Love You" by Major Lance, "It's All Over" by The Presidents, "A Nice Feeling" by Caroline Crawford, and "Pour Your Little Heart Out" by The Drifters.

Various — Two Steps To Soul Heaven – More 70s & 80s Steppers ... CD
Backbeats (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $9.99
Some of our favorite sorts of soul tracks from the 70s – those mellow groovers that never get too over the top, and have a great slow-burning energy that goes on and on through the night! The tracks here are the sort that bubbled under during the disco generation – more laidback tracks that often used the same arrangers, producers, and studios – but came up with a groove that was much more gentle, and which was perfect for the soulful, sensual lyrics of the tunes! Thanks to efforts by the two-step scene in 80s London, and Chicago steppers in the 90s, lots of these tracks have had great staying power for years – and are perfectly put together in this sublime little compilation. Titles include "Take It Slow" by The Notations, "Trying To Get Next To You" by Arnold Blair, "Ain't It A Shame" by The Dells, "This Feeling's Killing Me" by The Jones Girls, "Sweet Music Soft Lights & You" by Ken Williams, "Love Sounds" by Intimate Strangers, "Let's Do It Again" by The Staple Singers, "Try Love Again" by Natural Four, "Lucky Fellow" by Leroy Hutson, "How Glad I Am" by Joyce Cobb, and "We Got Some Catching Up To Do" by Jean Carn.

Various — You Heard It Here First Vol 2 – The Original Versions Of Famous Songs ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s. New Copy .... $11.99
A host of songs that may be familiar to your ears – but in versions that pretty obscure! The collection follows wonderfully in the spirit of the unique first volume – and again offers up the original versions of songs that later went onto become big hits for other artists – often presented here as indie 45s that hardly made much noise upon original release, but which obviously harbored enough genius to lead to famous recordings in later years! Styles change up nicely – a bit of rock, soul, and other modes in the collection's mix of 24 tracks – and titles include "California Dreamin" by Barry McGuire, "Hush" by Billy Joe Royal, "Sorrow" by The McCoys, "I've Got My Mind Set On You (parts 1 & 2)" by James Ray, "Old Man Willis" by Tony Joe White, "You Got What It Takes" by Bobby Parker, "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" by Don Cherry, "Leavin It All Up To You" by Don & Dewey, "Sing In The Sunshine" by Hoyt Axton, "Mustang Sally" by Sir Mack Rice, "Mbube" by Solomon Linda's Original Evening Birds, and "Higher & Higher" by The Dells.

new Dinah Washington — Tears & Laughter (Trip) ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pretty groovy little album from Dinah Washington – at first glance a set of older standards, but at second glance a date that features some wonderfully swinging arrangements from Quincy Jones! The Q really helps Dinah break from the usual mode here – providing here with an upbeat, tightly snapping sort of groove – that sweetly syncopated Quincy Jones sound that really helped some singers hit new heights in the 60s. And as an added delight, The Dells make a key appearance on a few tracks – singing in a harmony group style that's similar to their one album on Vee Jay – almost more in Four Freshmen modes, but in a really great way! Titles include "Am I Blue", "Tears & Laughter", "If I Should Lose You", "I Just Found Out About Love", "Wake The Town & Tell The People", and "Wee Small Hours".

new Various — Birth Of Soul – Special Chicago Edition ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive tribute to the genius of soul in the Windy City – a wonderful compilation that really gets at the special sound Chicago brought into play during the early years of soul! The set is filled with key cuts from the Chi-town scene of the time – some of them lesser-known that the famous hits always associated with our hometown – and beautifully selected to really capture a moment when soul music was first starting to come together as a style! You can definitely hear roots from Chicago blues, gospel, and R&B in the cuts – but they're definitely all soul, all the way through – a killer batch of nuggets that manages to offer up fresh bits from some big names, and uncover some great cuts by some less familiar folks. The package features full track-by-track notes on the tunes by Bill Dahl – and titles include "Tragic" by The Sheppards, "At The Party "by Wade Flemons, "Hi Diddley Dee Dum Dum" By The Dells, "Tell Him" by The Drew-Vels, "I've Got A Girl" by Major Lance, "Senorita I Love You" by The Impressions, "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" by Don & Bob, "My Heart Cries" by Etta & Harvey, "Isle Of Sirens" by Jerry Butler, "Enchanted Garden" by The Accents, "You've Got A Great Love" by The Chanteurs, "Father Knows Best" by The Radiants, "Let Em Try" by Rosco Gordon, "Behind The Curtains" by Jan Bradley, and "Puppy Love" by Barbara Lewis.

Various — Twistin Rumble Vol 2 – 29 Cuts Of Soulstomp, Twist-Party Lunacy, Garage R&B, & Craziness 1960 to 1968 ... CD
Twistin Rumble, 1960s. New Copy .... $13.99
Rough and raw grooves – way more than you might guess from the "twist" reference in the title! The sound here is more R&B than anything else – lots of heavy drums, honking sax, burning organ, and riffing guitar – but there's also some echoes of Latin rhythms, rockabilly raunch, and some 60s soul elements too – all percolating together wonderfully in a way that sounds like somebody blew the dust off a gritty pile of 45s, then filled them up to blast away in a decades-old jukebox in a tavern on the other side of the tracks! The CD version of Twistin Rumble Vol 2 collects many of the tracks from Twistin Rumble Volumes 3 & 4 vinyl – with plenty of rare gems – including "Switch Me" by Hector & The Frogmen, "The Frog" by Lonnie Brooks, "Georgia Slop" by Big Al Downing, "Who's Number One" by Ambrose Donald, "Beyond The Shadow Of A Doubt" by Sonny Day, "I'm Gonna Spend My Money" by Poor Boys, "Aunt Molly" by Billy Emerson, "Make Love To Me" by The Royal Premiers, "Do The Whip" by Skip Cole, "Can Your Monkey To The Dog" by The Golden Catalinas, "Stronger Than Dirt" by The Ardels, "Wah Wabble" by The Debelaires, "Madame Bootie Green" by Sonny Forrest, "Black Crack" by The Shardells, "The Ostrich" by The Primitives, "Shake Your Body Girl" by Larry Williams, "Slauson Shuffletime" by Round Robin and "Soul Finger" by Oscar & The Majestics. 29 tracks in all.

Brilliantly bright, tuneful 60s sounds from Tommy James & The Shondells – groovy stuff that's often as deeply catchy as their bigger hits, but also a bit more obscure as well – which makes this album a lot more fresh than some of their other records! Cotillion, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 10x7inch (pic cover).... $69.99 74.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer collection of singles from the legendary Cotillion arm of Atlantic Records – all presented as individual 7" records with original labels, served up in a hip limited edition package! The work here would already be great as a CD compilation – but it's extra special when served up in this stunning format – like finding a pile of rare soul singles in the back of a rack in an overlooked record store – still in great shape, and ready to explode anew on your turntable! The music is very well-chosen – and includes cuts by some key artists who only worked briefly for Cotillion, and never cut a full album for the label – such as Baby Washington, Otis Clay, or Walter Jackson. Other artists are ones who really hit their height at Cotillion, but still remain relatively obscure – and the singles here easily represent some of their best work ever. All cuts are right from the hippest tail end of the 60s – and titles include "Do Right Woman" and "That Kind Of Lovin" by Otis Clay, "Keep On Striving" and "Come On Let Me Love You" by Moses Smith, "Night After Night" and "The Love That I Needed" by The Blendells, "The Love Of My Woman" and "I Wanna Go Home" by Darrell Banks, "I've Fallen In Love" and "You Are The Circus" by C & The Shells, "Any Way That You Want Me" and "Life Has Its Ups & Downs" by Walter Jackson, "I Gotta Get Back To Lovin You" and "LA/USA" by Hollywood Spectrum, "I Don't Know" and "I Can't Afford To Lose Him" by Baby Washington, "Don't Play That Song" and "People In Love" by Lou Johnson, and "Ain't No Sun" and "Murder IN The First Degree" by The Dynamics.

BBE (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $21.99 22.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wild sounds from the early years of rock and roll – a heady brew of guitar-heavy instrumentals, soulful stompers, and more – all pulled from the hinterland of the rare 45 underground! The tunes here go way past familiar oldies – and even past the sorts of sounds that usually show up on surf compilations – because, as he does with funk records, Keb Darge has a great ear for the unusual – the sorts of odd platters that have always show up in his best record digging and DJ gigs – laid out perfectly here in a really overstuffed collection! Keb turns in nice notes on each track – and titles include "Honey Bun" by Larry Donn, "Ghost Train" by The Swanks, "I Don't Wanna Leave" by Deacon & The Rock & Rollers, "Gorilla" by The Shandells, "She's The One That Got It" by Allen Page, "Madness" by Rhythm Rockers, "Woodpecker Rock" by The Braves, "Let's Dance" by The Excels, "Bad Bad Boy" by Bobby Lollar, and "Lobo Jones" by Jackie Gotroe.

new Various — Hitsville West – San Francisco's Uptown Soul ... CD
Kent (UK), Mid 60s. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Overlooked Northern Soul from the west coast – a great batch of burners from San Francisco, and proof that the city had almost as much going on as Detroit! As you might guess from the "hitsville" in the title, there's a sound here that owes plenty to Motown – tight instrumentation alongside real soul vocals – all wrapped up with production that helps bring out the best elements of both, and focus it into a soaringly uptempo groove! But unlike Motown, most of the work here is much more obscure – lesser-known west coast singers and groups who really shine brightly, and who make the set a great discovery in 60s soul. Many tracks are from the indie Villa label – and titles include "Is It All Gone" and "Trust In Me" by The Magicians, "I Can't Jerk" by Ozz & The Sperlings, "Is It Love Baby" and "Why Did Our Love Go" by The Tandells, "We Got To Keep On" by The Casanova II, "I'll Always Love You" by The Performers, "Double Cookin" by The Checkerboard Sauares, "You Gotta Git" by Lonnie Hewitt, "You Can Forget It" by Sisters Three, "Times A Wastin" by The Fuller Brothers, "Why Would You Blow It" by Claude Huey, "I Can't See Your Love" by The Ballads, and "You're A Winner" by Harold Andrews.

new Various — Calypsoul 70 – Caribbean Soul 1969-1979 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $11.99 17.98 Out Of Stock
A cool collection of funky grooves from the Caribbean – tracks that take a strong influence from American soul and funk, then blend it heavily with hip rhythms from the islands! A few of the names here are familiar, but most are relatively obscure – and put together, the tunes on the set illustrate a hugely under-tapped scene that's filled with wonderful tunes – tracks awash in jazzy rhythms, skittish percussion, and a range of styles that move past much more familiar Jamaican sounds from down south. Drums here are often quite heavy, and matched by other percussion as well – not to mention jagged guitar lines and bass bits that really send the whole thing home! As with other Strut compilations, the overall package and liner notes are as great as the music on the disc – and the set features a total of 20 tracks that include "Of My Hands" by The Goretti Group, "Calypsoul" by Clarence Curvan & His Mod Sounds, "You Tink It Sorf" by Lancelot Layne, "Magic Fever" by Magic Circle Express, "Independent Bahamas" by Biosis Now, "Move Up Blackman" by Tyrone Taylor, "Guanavaco" by Marius Cultier, "Raycan" by The Hondells, "You Don't Love Me" by Gemini Brass, "Woman" by Sambo, "We See Jah" by Wadadli Experience, "Freedom In Africa" by Duke, "Red Light Lady" by Ophelia, and "It's A Feeling" by St Maartens The Rolling Tones.
