DelfonicsDelfonics ... LP
Philly Groove, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The third album in an amazing early run from The Delfonics – the kind of work that set a whole new standard for group soul in the 70s! A number of the tracks here had already risen to fame before the album's release as singles – and these are mixed with some additional tracks that are woven together in a near-perfect symphony of sound! The mighty Thom Bell arranged most of the numbers here – save for 2 by Anthony Dorsey – and the group's heavenly harmonies are in amazing form on both mellow ballads and a few more righteous numbers. Titles include "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", "Funny Feeling", "Over & Over", "Baby I Love You", "When You Get Right Down To It", "Delfonics Theme", "Trying To Make A Fool Of Me", "I Gave To You", "Down Is Up Up Is Down", and "Think About Me".

DelfonicsDelfonics/Tell Me This Is A Dream ... CD
Philly Groove/Kent (UK), 1970/1972. New Copy .... $15.99
Sublime soul through and through – 2 classics from The Delfonics, back to back on a single CD! First up is self-titled record The Delfonics – the third album in an amazing early run from The Delfonics – the kind of work that set a whole new standard for group soul in the 70s! Tell Me This Is A Dream has The Delfonics just getting better and better! The longer the group recorded, the more they picked up this strange spacey quality that pushed them past some of their contemporaries of the early 70s. And on an album like this, they prove that they're way more than just Thom Bell puppets by showing that they have a rich talent for a wide variety of complicated arrangements that really push the vocal group sound of the 70s. They take many stylistic risks, coming up with really sinister new harmonies, and always managing to stay clear of the cliches that buried some of their mates on the charts. Bell still arranges some of the material, but the record also features work by Norman Harris and Caldwell MacMillan, who did the real genius work on the record. This masterpiece includes the sublime "Hey, Love", plus "Walk Right Up to the Sun", "I'm A Man", "Too Late", "Love You Till I Die", "Looking for a Girl", and "Round & Round".

DelfonicsLa La Means I Love You ... LP
Philly Groove, 1968. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A landmark album in harmony soul – one of those records that pushed the genre to a whole new level! The Delfonics emerge fully formed here as one of the most compelling groups of their time – a tremendous trio with a really unique approach to soul music – one that's heartfelt and heartbreaking, but never too sweet to be cloying or poppy – definitely just the right groove to keep things hip while also cracking the charts! The album's their first full collaboration with legendary producer Thom Bell – and it's got a sound that's summed up perfectly in the quintessential cut "La La Means I Love You" – and which is followed through beautifully on a batch of tracks that includes "Losing You", "Can You Remember", "You're Gone", "I'm Sorry", and "Break Your Promise".

new DelfonicsSound Of Sexy Soul ... LP
Philly Groove, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A groundbreaking album of vocal group soul – right from the first note! The record kicks off with the sublime "Ready Or Not, Here I Come" – which starts with fierce stepping strings that are actually funky, then soars into some of the best harmonies the group ever put to record, superbly arranged by the great Thom Bell, who also wrote the track. As the album progresses, the sound expands further to encompass many elements that would become the blueprint for vocal groups over the next few years – like twangy electric sitar, cascading orchestrations, and pinched lead vocals that take a lot more chances than most group singers had been taking for years! There's still a bit of a 60s soul sound to some of the cuts, but the album's a watershed – not only for Thom Bell and the group, but for harmony soul as well! Titles include "Ready Or Not Here I Come", "My New Love", "Loving Him", "With These Hands", "Somebody Loves You", and "Everytime I See My Baby".

new Adrian Younge with The DelfonicsAdrian Younge Presents The Delfonics ... CD
Wax Poetics, 2013. New Copy Gatefold .... $12.99 13.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really stunning little record – way more than we expected – and our expectations were already pretty darn high! The album's contemporary – and features legendary Delfonics lead singer William Hart working with younger studio whiz Adrian Younge – who gives the whole thing the feel of some lost Delfonics tapes from the early 70s! Younge really unlocks the darkness that was always present in the group's music, but didn't always show up this well – that great sound they were hitting after the initial three LPs, when the themes got even stranger, and the trio moved way past simple love songs and pop hits. Hart's vocals are tremendous – instantly recognizable, and often supported by harmonies that keep them in just the right sort of old school focus – a sound that leaves us breathless throughout, and which makes for a really incredible album. Titles include "True Love", "To Be Your One", "Stand Up", "Party's Over", "Lover's Melody", "Life Never Ends", "Just Love", "So In Love With You", "Silently", and "Enemies".

new Vernon Burch — I'll Be Your Sunshine ... LP
United Artists, 1975. Very Good .... $3.99 Just Sold Out!
Vernon was one of the better smooth soul arrangers of the 70s, and this album from 1975 is one of his better efforts as a solo artist after stints with such groups as The Delfonics, The Bar-Kays and The Stairsteps. The record features a tight batch of self-penned tunes that move between mellow groove and up tempo funk – the latter of which are a bit weak, but the mellow cuts are all pretty nice. Titles include "Give Love A Try", "Changes", "And You Call That Love", "Loving You Gets Better With Time", and "Ain't Gonna Tell Nobody".
(Cover has a cut corner and some seam splitting.)

new Ghostface Killah & Adrian Younge — Twelve Reasons To Die ... LP
Soul Temple, 2013. New Copy .... $18.99 19.98 Just Sold Out!
Ghostface Killah and Adrian Younge team up for this most intriguing artist and producer/composer collaboration – one with a promising concept and they deliver in full – shadowboxing their way to a knockout! On the mic tip, Ghostface is in his comfort zone – spitting lyrics laced with martial arts, mafia and supernatural imagery – and doing so with a furious flow and peak precision. Adrian Younge and his Venice Dawn group lay down the sounds – with dusty soul and funk, naturally – but what really pushes this one to a superior level are the unpredictable and ingenious nods to 70s Italian film scores, particularly in the giallo genre. Spooky, echoey keyboards and occasional angelic female backing vocals elevate the vibe and balance the grit. 12 tracks and no filler: "Beware The Stare", "Rise Of The Black Suits", "I Declare War" with Masta Killa, "Blood On The Cobblestones" with U-God & Inspectah Deck, "Rise Of The Ghostface Killah", "Murder Spree" with U-God, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck and Killa Sin, "Enemies Around Me" with William Hart of the Delfonics, "The Sure Shot (Parts 1 And 2)", "Twelve Reasons To Die" and more.

new Lifestyle — Lifestyle ... LP
Rollers, 1977. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure harmony group from the early 70s (we only know them from this one album) – with a great sound that's right up there in the New Jersey/Philly mode. Production is by Billy Jackson – who does a good job with the uptempo numbers (recorded at Sigma Sound), but even better with the sweet smooth ballads, which easily rank with the best work of supergroups like The Manhattans or The Delfonics. Includes a great ballad, "I'm Going to Love You Girl", with deep vocal lead by Jerry Ferguson – plus the tracks "Love Can Make You Cry", "This Dream", "Katrina", "Trying to Make it Up to You" and "Tell Me".
(Cover has a cut corner and promo sticker.)

new Major Harris — My Way ... CD
Atlantic/Friday Music, 1974. Used .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
Far and above the best album by sweet soul vocalist Major Harris! Harris had knocked around for years in vocal groups during the 60s, and had even sung for a bit with The Delfonics in the early 70s – but this album is his crowning achievement, a landmark of sweet Philly soul with some wonderful ballad work that he'd never be able to match again! Bobby Eli wrote, produced, and arranged most of the material – and although he had a bit of help from Norman Harris and Ron Kersey on some of the record, the core of the album is that perfect ballad style that Eli could do when he wasn't working on groovers. The centerpiece of the album is the stellar "Love Won't Let Me Wait" – a killer quiet storm soul number – and the record also features a great remake of "Sideshow", which Eli also cut with Blue Magic. Other tracks include "Loving You Is Mellow", "After Loving You", and "Each Morning I Wake Up".

new Jackie Jackson — Jackie Jackson ... LP
Motown, 1973. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
A great solo album from Jackie Jackson – one that we'd rank right up there with work from the time by The Jackson Five, or his brother Michael. This one's got a sweet soul sound that's really great – arranged by The Corporation and Gene Page in the mode of some of the best early 70s work by groups like The Delfonics, The Miracles, and Jimmy Briscoe & The Beavers. Includes the great cut "Is It Him Or Me", which begins with a great break, and an excellent monologue. Other tracks include "Do I Owe", "Bad Girl", "It's So Easy", "Thanks To You", and "You're The Only One".
(White label promo. Cover has a promo track list sticker. Spine has one spot of old tape and a small rip.)

new Ronnie Dyson — One Man Band (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Purpose, 1973. New Copy .... $13.99 14.98 Out Of Stock
Ronnie Dyson's standout set from the start of his career – a beautiful batch of Philly soul tunes that get some key help from the team of Thom Bell and Linda Creed! Bell produced and arranged part of the set – with other help coming from Stan Vincent and Billy Jackson – all of whom really get the right idea for Ronnie's amazing voice – and really help him find a way of stepping past his previous career on the stage! Some of the best cuts that mix of fragile and groovy that was really working at the time for harmony groups like The Delfonics or The Stylistics – a mode that takes Dyson far past his work in Hair, to a mode that has him almost doing better on his own than any other contemporaries from the show. The set features the sublime cuts "One Man Band", "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", "I Think I'll Tell Her", "When You Get Right Down To It", "Give In To Love", "Girl Don't Come", "Love Of A Woman", and "Point Of No Return". CD is overflowing with bonus tracks too – singles that include "The Captain Of Your Soul", "Cup Runneth Over", "Lady In Red", "We Can Make It Last Forever", "Just A Little Love From Me", and "Life & Breath".
