A live recording with a bit of a 70s loft jazz feel – Eyges on cello, in trio format with Byard Lancaster on reeds and Sunny Murray on drums. The strength of Lancaster's reeds carries the set, although Eyges does get in some nice bits on plucked cello from time to time. Titles include "Loquacity", "The Way It Is", "Crossroads", "Nothing Has Changed", "Cast A Long Shadow", and "Good Medicine".

A beautiful set of duets – Hicks on piano and Murray on tenor and bass clarinet, playing some of his most sensitive DIW material ever!

A key recording from the early years of David Murray – a sharp-edged trio recording that instantly placed him in a strong lineage of tenor improvisers that includes Sonny Rollins and Albert Ayler! The record's a live date – recorded at the Wilisau Jazz Festival in 1978 with a trio that features Johnny Dyani on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums – both well-chosen players to assist Murray on his long, exploratory tracks for the record – tunes that somewhat break open his loft jazz styles of the period, and push things slightly more into a European improvisatory mode. Titles include "3D Family", "Patricia", "In Memory Of Yomo Kenyatta", and "Shout Song".

A really bold step forward for David Murray – a seminal live recording that features one of the hippest big bands you'll ever hope to find! Murray really uses the date as a chance to express the full range of his musical talents – and often shows modes that are more traditional than you might expect, yet which are always touched with an undercurrent of modernism! The musical palette here is quite different than either the outside or inside sessions recorded by Murray with a small group at the time – and he really reaches back through a rich history of jazz in the performance, and updates it wonderfully with help from players who include Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Olu Dara on cornet, Craig Harris on trombone, Vincent Chaney on French horn, Steve Coleman on alto and soprano sax, Rod Williams on piano, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. Butch Morris conducts – and titles on this second volume include "Dewey's Circle", "Roses", "David Tune", "Four Minute Marvin", and "Great Peace".

A trio of video performances from tenorist David Murray – all packaged nicely together on a single DVD! First up is David Murray I'm A Jazzman – a slice in the life of Murray, captured by the camera – and running for almost an hour. Next is David Murray & The Gwo Ka Masters Live In Sante Lucie – three quarters of an hour's worth of performance from 2008 – with lots of percussion next to Murray's horn! Last up is David Murray & The Black Saint Quartet Live At Banlieues Blues Festival in 2010 – a half-hour's performance, shot in a very stylistic way!

Two reed giants get some great vocal help here – singer Ozay, who works here with some really great inflections on an unusual choice of tunes! The record's less a heavy workout from Murray or Freeman – and in fact, the players split the record – so that neither is together on one track. Yet they also both really help give the record some shape – adding some depth alongside Ozay's great vocals – which are sometimes wordless, in a really cool way. Other players include Kirk Lightsey and DD Jackson on piano, Calvin Jones on bass, Billy Bang on violin, and Pheeroan Aklaff on drums – a very hip lineup that lives up to its promise. And titles include "Ancient Dancer", "Antiquated Love", "Instanblue", "En Guzel Deniz", "Peaceful Heart/Gentle Spirit", and "Intuitively".

One of the more electric projects we've heard from reedman David Murray in recent years – a collaboration with bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who's still got the same righteous sound he had back in the 80s! The bass shades in the songs right from the start – as does the guitar of Mingus Murray too – but Murray's rock-solid and extremely soulful once he opens up, with tenor lines that are especially wonderful, plus a bit of bass clarinet – all heard here in a style that really takes us back to some of Tacuma's better moments of a few decades before. Other group members include Paul Urbanek on "recomposing keyboards" and Ranzell Merrit on drums – and titles include "How Sensitive", "Rendezvous", "Hotel Le Prince", "Theme On A Dream", "Bring It On", and "Yes We Can".

Loose, soulful and swaggering tenor sax from a pair of legends – Hal Singer and David Murray – fellows who busted boundaries for decades! On Challenge, recorded in Paris in Spring, 2010, they play great, mostly original material with passionate conviction and a a boundless sense of intutitive interplay. Singer and Murray communicate masterfully, and their excellent group includes Rasul Siddik on trumpet, Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Jaribu Shahid and the always great Hamid Drake on drums. Includes Singer's "Challenge", "Hamid's Time" and "Dreams Of Dreams", Murray's "Hong Kong Nights", "Long March To Freedom", "Stressology" and more.

A surprisingly nice album of straight ahead tenor tracks from David Murray – playing here in a quartet with guitarist Stanley Franks, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and the great Don Pullen, who plays organ on the session! The album's not exactly in the classic soul jazz organ/tenor mode – but it is one of the few that Murray ever recorded, and it's quite interesting to hear him in this sort of a format. Plus, it was also one of the few recorded during that magic year of 1991 – when DIW really seemed to be getting things right, turning out some of the few truly genius albums in the history of the label. Titles include "Milano Strut", "Black February", "At The Cafe Central", "In The Spirit", and "High Priest".

An ambitious project from David Murray – one that features an expanded string ensemble working with his core quartet – performing a set of original material that includes the long "Pushkin Suite" and some shorter numbers that revel in Murray's own soulful spirit. While the "Pushkin Suite" is supposedly the main focus of this effort, we're more partial to the shorter tracks – as they dance, glide, and soar with the freely exploratory spiritualism we love so much in Murray's earlier years – and get past the headier mode of the longer suite. Titles include "Waltz Again", "Dark Secrets", "Steps", and "Sparkle" – and players include Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums.

One of David Murray's most ambitious projects ever – and that's saying a lot, given the depth of the 150-plus albums in his recording career! As you'd guess from the title, the set's a tribute to the En Espanol albums by Nat King Cole from the early 60s – and like those gems, Murray's project is a trans-cultural outing that brings together his jazz roots with Cuban musicians, additional strings, and an occasional vocalist – all recorded in studios from Argentina, to Portugal, to France! There's still a nicely unified feel to the whole record, though – and there should be, given how long Murray has kept this musical vision in his heart – and honestly, the whole thing is one of the most impressive things he's recorded in years – not only a great reminder that he's got deep respect for many jazz traditions, but also that he can inflect his horn with rich flavors with effortless ease. Titles include "Quizas Quizas Quizas", "Black Nat", "Piel Canela", "Cachito", "Aqui Se Habla En Amor", and "El Bodeguero".

One of the greatest albums we've heard from David Murray in many years – a beautifully spiritual set that really reminds us of the promise we first heard in his music decades ago! Murray's working here with a lean, soulful ensemble that includes Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Ray Drummond on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – all in a groove that has plenty of sharp edges, but which is also nicely inside – very focused, and with a sense of depth that's really wonderful! All tracks are originals by Murray – penned with the sensitivity of an older soul jazz recording – and two numbers feature lyrics by Ishmael Reed, sung by Cassandra Wilson on guest vocals. Titles include "Sacred Ground", "Transitions", "Family Reunion", "The Prophet Of Doom", "Believe In Love", and "Banished".

One of the greatest gifts of the Soul Note label was the way that it could take sessions with avant-oriented players, and make them turn out straighter jazz material – but with a really nice edge! This session's a perfect example of that legacy – as it features David Murray at the head of a great group that includes Butch Morris on cornet, Bobby Bradford on trumpet, Henry Threadgill on alto and flute, Craig Harris on trombone, Curtis Clark on piano, Wilber Morris on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – all players who can usually improvise pretty freely, but who here work in a straighter, swinging mode that's totally great! There's still plenty of sharp edges in the record – odd twists and turns that really keep things offbeat, even though straight – and titles are extended Murray compositions that include "Sing Song", "Flowers For Albert", and "Murray's Steps".

The group's a trio – with Alex Wing on bass and James Woodley on drums – which gives the recording an almost ESP Records sort of vibe – and Boykin's the shining star throughout, really knocking us over with his solos on the well-recorded set! A quadruple-header of a set – four great albums together in one cool box! First up is the first album from the great Special Edition group of drummer Jack DeJohnette – a wickedly sharp record that's as equally tight on the reeds as it is on the drums! The album features brilliant work on tenor and bass clarinet from David Murray, and equally nice alto from Arthur Blythe – both criss-crossing and soaring out effortlessly in each others' company – amidst complex rhythmic impulses from DeJohnette on drums, and both bass and cello from Peter Warren. Jack also plays a bit of piano and melodica as well – and titles include "One For Eric", "Zoot Suite", "Central Park West", "India", and "Journey To The Twin Planet". On Tin Can Alley, the great Chico Freeman really shines with drummer Jack DeJohnette – lending his tenor, flute, and bass clarinet to the album – and helping make it a really reed-heavy affair! John Purcell's also in the frontline with Chico – playing alto, baritone, and flute – and in addition to Peter Warren's bass and cello, the album Jack DeJohnette also plays drums, congas, piano, and organ too! The range of instrumentation almost echoes some Chicago AACM roots at times – but with that tighter focus that musicians like Jack were bringing to their work at ECM – and titles include "Riff Raff", "The Gri Gri Man", "I Know", and "Pastel Rhapsody". Inflation Blues is a record that bristles with energy right from the start – spurred on by the creative rhythms that have always made Jack DeJohnette one of the most inventive drummers of his time! The group features a triple-threat lineup with Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Chico Freeman on tenor and soprano sax, and John Purcell on alto, baritone, flute, and clarinet – especially nice at points when the reedmen shift and turn with sharp edges learned from the earlier avant years, yet given a nice focus here under DeJohnette's leadership. Jack penned all original tunes for the set, and there's a depth to his writing that really marks a move forward – possibly some of his richest musical statements on record ever! Titles include "Ebony", "Inflation Blues", "Slowdown", and "The Islands". Album Album is a record that really dives deep with a rich mix of creative rhythms and inventive horn lines! The album still has Jack staying true to his more avant roots – working with tenor from David Murray, alto and soprano sax from John Purcell, baritone and tuba from Howard Johnson, and bass from Rufus Reid – a lineup that's a bit bigger than on other Special Edition albums, and which is used to fill in even more colors and deeper elements than before. Some of the tunes are wonderfully vivid in approach – and titles include "Festival", "Third World Anthem", "Zoot Suite", "Ahmad The Terrible", and "New Orleans Strut".

An overlooked early session from multi-instrumentalist Michael Gregory Jackson, recording here with a trio of great horn players in a wonderfully sensitive sound! The record's approach is a perfect illustration of the maturity on the New York avant scene in the late 70s – a real change from the more frenetic modes that ESP was recording a decade before, with some thoughtful, almost pensive points that really round out the record beautifully. Jackson plays mostly guitar, but also vocalizes a bit and plays marimba, percussion, wood flute and other instruments – and he's joined by Oliver Lake on flute and saxes, Wadada Leo Smith on trumpets, and David Murray on tenor sax. Some tracks get nice and bold, while others hold back wonderfully – and titles include "Oliver Lake", "Clarity", "A View Of This Life", "Prelueoionti" and "Iomi".

Genius work from the World Sax Quartet – a really unique ensemble who not only set the tone for a generation of jazz musicians to come, but also gave focus to some richly expressive talents from the 70s underground! The quartet is something of a supergroup right from the start – graced with tremendous reed work by David Murray, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and Hamiet Bluiett – all key American players who really helped transform the sound of jazz in the 70s – coming together here in a whole new way on seminal sides for the Black Saint/Soul Note label! The format – which inspired many others – is really compelling – as the group's sounds come only from saxes, no other instrumentation at all – with the four wind players handling all rhythm and melody, and making some really amazing music in the process. Horn interplay had never been heard so clearly before – especially as here, the stars put aside their egos, and never try to overblow each other – and instead have this brilliant way of working together to craft a new sort of groove. The box set features the albums Steppin With, WSQ, Revue, Live In Zurich, and Live At The Brooklyn Academy Of Music – all with the classic lineup – plus Moving Right Along, which actually features a quintet with Bluiett, Murray, and Lake – joined by James Spaulding and Eric Person.

With Hamiet Bluiett, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and David Murray – on titles that include "Ming", "David's Tune", "I Heard That", "Quinn Chapel AME Church", "Affairs Of The Heart", and "Little Samba".

Pretty amazing music from Morocco – sounds that are definitely as raw as promised in the title, but which also go way past what you might expect as music from 45s! First off, the tunes are much longer than usual for a 7" single – as most numbers are well over 5 minutes in length, and build beautifully through elliptical rhythms that fold back upon themselves and create these really compelling grooves – often with the same sort of hypnotic feel that you'd get from more traditional Moroccan modes. Also, the work is much earthier than you'd expect from 45s recorded in the 60s – almost ethnographic in nature, as percussion, regional instrumentation, and voices are presented without any sense of studio work at all. Dust To Digital really step into a whole new world with this one – working with Moroccan collector David Murray, who also provides a lot of notes and images. Titles include "Ha Howa Ha Howa" by Benasser Oukhoya & Cheikha Hadda Ouakki, "Makh Makh" by Jimimi Lekbir & Fatma Anounya, "Kassidat El Hakka" by Abellah El Magana, "Zine Mlih" by Mohamed Bergam, and "Sidi M'Bark" by Cheikh Mohamed Riffi.

One of the strongest recorded performances we've heard to date from saxophonist David Boykin – a leading light in the current underground scene of Chicago, and a player who recalls the promise of the early days of the AACM, particularly the spiritualist work of Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre. Boykin plays tenor here – with an exploratory tone that's deeply soulful, in the mode of some of David Murray's more spiritual work from the late 70s/early 80s, layered over percussive backings by Bakari Davis. The spareness of the set reminds us slightly of some of the great recordings made by Murray and Kahil El'Zabar – with a freeness that's still quite rhythmic, always searching within its own boundaries of expression. Titles include "Despair", "Ananas", "Ajaramutations", and "Black Magic".

A really wonderful album by Herbie Mann – and one of the few to feature him exclusively on bass clarinet! Bass clarinet is one of the hippest of instruments – mastered only by a few strong solo players in jazz, like Eric Dolphy or David Murray – and Herbie shows here that he was way more than a pop jazz player back in the 50s, as he uses the tone of the deep rich instrument to weave magical lines of color and sound. He's working here with a hip small LA combo that includes Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, and Mel Lewis on drums – and the tracks are long and snaking, way more interesting than you'd expect! Titles include "The Theme", "A Handful Of Stars", "Lady Bird", and "A Stella Performance".

Odean Pope's never sounded better – and this smoking trio set may well be one of the best illustrations of his power we've ever heard! There's a righteous focus to the record that grabs us right from the start – a bold, rich sound from his tenor that easily shows that Pope's well deserving of inclusion in a legacy that includes Archie Shepp, David Murray, and maybe even Pharoah Sanders – a voice on tenor that's incredibly clear and confident, yet filled with humanity too. Possibly, the setting of the record is what really lets Odean sparkle – an open trio with Lee Smith on bass and Billy Hart on drums – both players who have the same vibrancy as Pope, and who seem to work together with his spirit to really soar to the skies! A perfect tenor trio record – following in that Sonny Rollins/Village Vanguard legacy – with titles that include "Fresh Breeze", "The Garden Of Happiness", "Almost Like Part One", "12th Night", "You & Me", and "Good Question Two".
