Sarah DashSarah Dash ... CD
1978. New Copy .... Mid-December, 2013
Sarah's first album as a solo act – and a pretty classy set of club tunes that benefits heavily from arrangements by Leon Pendarvis! Pendarvis gives the record the full and flowing feel of his best work from the time – disco, to be sure, on most cuts – but also with some broader arrangements that help take Sarah into some soulful territory on the mellow tunes. Titles include "Sinner Man", "You", "Touch & Go", "Look But Don't Touch", "Do It For Love", and "Charge".

Foxy — Hot Numbers ... CD
Dash/TK/Henry Stone, 1979. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
Way more than disco, a bit different than funk, and a lot cooler than you might guess from the image on the cover – a stone classic from Miami groovers Foxy, and easily one of their best records ever! The set's nice and tight right from the start – not really disco, but more of a compressed approach to funk, with some surprising Latin touches too – especially in some of the percussion moments that really open up, creating a nice sense of energy to the record! The group have more than enough tightness to cross over to the AOR crowd, but they still keep things sharp on most tracks – and make the album real TK standard from the glory days. Titles include "Devil Boogie", "Hot Number", "Chicapbon Chicapbon", "Headhunter", "Lady", "Give Me That Groove", "Lady Of The Streets", and "Give Me A Break".

Foxy — Live ... CD
Dash/Henry Stone, 1980. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
A live take on the Foxy sound of the clubs – served up here without any studio support at all, at a level that really showcases their talents as a funk band! There's still a strong sense of compression in the grooves – that Foxy way of laying down the lyrics right along with the guitar and basslines – but the concert setting makes for a sharper sound overall, and maybe a looser one too – especially on some of the rhythms, which have a great spontaneous feel – as does the crowd noise in the background, which serves to enhance the party sound of the record! Titles include "Ba Ba Cool", "Party Boys", "Hot Number", "Get Off", "Sex Symbol", and "Banshee".

Kracker — Hot ... CD
Dash/Henry Stone, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
An unusual set from Kracker – a record that's possibly more rock/pop at the core, but one that definitely shares some of the soulful touches of other albums on the Dash label too! The group dress like a funk band on the album's flipside photo – and they've got vocal interplay that's not unlike some of the blue eyed soul groups on the east coast – set to rhythms here that are sometimes disco, sometimes a bit more flamboyant pop – and titles include "Woman", "Lucky Are Those", "Lady Of My Life", "Alarm Clock Blues", "Back In My Arms Again", and "Gentleman Of Men".

Rice & Beans Orchestra — Rice & Beans Orchestra ... LP
Dash/TK, 1976. Very Good+ .... $1.99
A great mix of symphonic disco and Latin hustle – one of the more compelling moments from The Rice & Beans Orchestra, served up with some tight arrangements by Hector Garrido! There's a nice blend of New York and Miami modes going on here – and the proceedings are largely instrumental, with some standout instrumental solos amidst the larger orchestrations – augmented by enough conga work to make things kick nicely on the best numbers! Titles include "Vereda Tropical", "Blue Danube Hustle", "Our Love Concerto", "Symphonic Salsa", "Catano Ferry", "Rice & Beans Theme", and "Disco Dancing".
(Spine has a spot of old tape & a small rip. Top & bottom seams have masking tape. Cover has light wear.)

T-Connection — Magic ... CD
Dash/TK/Henry Stone, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
Plenty of Magic here from T-Connection – a clubby set of tracks, yet one that's still put together more like a funk combo record from the mid 70s! The instrumentation is mindblowing – impeccable guitar and basslines, set to snapping rhythms that really capture the best Miami funk mode before smoother disco took over – especially impressive on the longer tracks on the set! The whole thing's great – more like a pile of fast funky 45s than the usual disco record – and titles include the long "Do What You Wanna Do", plus "Disco Magic", "Got To See My Lady", "Peace Line", "Monday Morning", and "Mothers Love".

T-Connection — T-Connection ... CD
Dash/Henry Stone, 1978. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
A soaring stormer from T-Connection – and a set that has them sounding even better than before! There's a perfection here the group didn't have with earlier releases – a quality that goes way past indie funk ensemble, into the realm of some of the best mainstream acts on the bigger labels at the time – company shared by a rare few, like Earth Wind & Fire, Ohio Players, or the Bar-Kays! Things are every bit as funky as before – but there's a way of putting the tunes together that really blows us away – fusing all the elements together perfectly, and making everything work towards the groove – yet all without making anything sound too slick or polished either. Mighty nice all the way through – and titles include "Funky Lady", "Don't Stop The Music", "Funkannection", "Saturday Night", "At Midnight", and "Love Supreme".

new T-Connection — Totally Connected ... CD
Dash/Henry Stone, 1979. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
Great work by one of the funkiest disco bands of the late 70s! T Connection were always a step above most of their contemporaries, especially some of the weaker pop disco acts on the TK family of labels – which was the group's home during these years. They brought a really solid conception to all of their work in the early days – and this record's a great mix of soul and funk club tracks, done with a precision that almost approaches Earth Wind & Fire in the mid 70s – razor-sharp, and right on the money throughout! Vocals are tasty, there's lots of nice guitar work, and the production has a modern sound that points ahead to the 80s groove years. Tracks include "Totally Connected", "Let's Do It Today", "Choosing", "That's Love", and "Ecstasy".

new Foxy — Get Off ... LP
Dash, 1978. Very Good .... $1.99 Just Sold Out!
A pretty catchy bit of Miami club from the late 70s – and an album that sounds a heck of a lot better than you might think from its silly pink cover! The group's actually got a strong acoustic sound underpinning their grooves – with some excellent percussion underneath the best tracks, and some vocals that almost hit a scatting harmony range that reminds us of Side Effect or the LA Boppers. There's a definite Latin bent to some of the better tunes too – almost hitting in a Kid Creole style, but without the retro touches. Titles include "Mademoiselle", "Tena's Song", "Ready For Love", "Get Off", and "It's Happening".
(Cover has a cutout notch & light pen.)

new T-Connection — On Fire ... LP
Dash, 1977. Used Gatefold .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
T-Connection are definitely on fire with this smoking little set – a killer batch of late 70s club, done with almost equal parts funk, soul, and disco! As with their debut, the group here are right on the money instrumentally – playing with a dexterity that few other large funk groups could match this well – especially blistering on some of the album's longer tracks too. There's also a great sense of balance to the record too – a ballad, some midtempo numbers, and a more well-rounded feel that also shows the group going for a wider palette of sounds than just their usual grooves. But as always, the upbeat club tracks are the best – and titles include "Lady Of The Night", "On Fire", "Cush", "Groove To Get Down", and "Let Yourself Go".
(White label promo. Cvoer has edge wear, the remnants of a sticker, and a peeled spot from sticker removal.)

new Asha Puthli — L'Indiana ... LP
Dash, 1978. Used .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
A little more disco than some of Asha Pulthi's earlier releases – but still pretty darn nice stuff, handled in that spacey European mode that made her CBS records sound so compelling. Asha's still got that unique voice – kind of a mix of porno sleaze and Munich soul – and the arrangements have enough of a funky kick in them to keep things interesting. Titles include "Mr Moonlight", "Music Machine", "There Is A Party Tonight", "Legend Of Thais", and "I'll See You Around".

new Foxy — Foxy ... LP
Dash, 1976. Used .... $5.99 Out Of Stock
The first album from Foxy – a surprisingly great Miami club combo, one with lots of jazzy touches on the instrumentation, and an overall deeper sound than most of their TK contemporaries! There's a really strange edge to some of these tunes – they're disco groovers, sure, but they've got some pretty quirky rhythms, strange jazzy touches on some of the vocals, and lots of nice percussion. Titles include "People Fall In Love", "Let's Love", "What's It Take", "Baby I'm Leaving", and "You Make Me Hot".

Darwin's Theory — Darwin's Theory ... LP
Lotus Land, 1978. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99
The first-ever release of this lost soul treasure – a rare session from a late 70s group from Tulsa, recording in LA at the studio of Sly Stone! The set's got a groove that's way more than you'd expect from any Oklahoma combo – a mature, modern soul sparkle that's totally great – almost the sort of vibe you'd find from some of the best groups of the time on labels like Elektra or Capitol, but handled here with a bit more indie charm overall! The tracks are all originals, and they balance out mellow steppers and tighter groovers nicely – which makes for an album that's amazingly deep in conception, and way more than just a slap-dash batch of tracks from the studio. We're sure that Sly would have been proud of the work here – and our hat's off to the folks at Lotus Land for finally getting this one released! Titles include "Funky Sounds", "Accept The Truth", "Keep On Smiling", "If You Dance Tonight", "I Love Everything About You", "On A Lovely Night Like This", "I Hope You'll Be", and an untitled track.

new Don Ellis — Live In 3/2/3/4 Time ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $1.99
Fresh and modern big band work – with a nice dash of soul, and some of the early traces of funk that would later show up heavily in Ellis' 70s work! Tracks are long, and in compelling time structures – as indicated by the titles – and groove with an MPS-like approach to the work – strong solos bursting out from the larger band, and very strong rhythms pushing most of the tracks nicely over the top! Players include Ira Schulman, Ruben Leon, Dave Mackay, and Ron Starr – and titles include "Barnum's Revenge", "Upstart", "Thetis", "Orientation", and "Freedom Jazz Dance".

Gandalf — Gandalf ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A fantastic lost psych album – with a moody spacey sound augmented by lots of organ, harpsichord, and electric piano! The best cuts are short and echoey – with kind of a trippy pop feel that sounds like post-Brit invasion lyricism, mixed with LA stoner freedom, and a good dash of Love-esque soul. Titles include Tim Hardin's great "You Upset the Grace of Living", "Hang Onto A Dream", and "Never Too Far" – plus a very cool version of "Nature Boy", and the tracks "Tiffany Rings", "I Watch The Moon", and "Me About You".

Gang Colours — Keychain Collection ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $13.99
Melodic and atmospheric sounds from Gang Colours – fragile and tuneful material that’s somewhat of a surprise from the Brownswood label! I guess we shouldn't really think of what Gang Colours does here as that much of a departure for the label, given their unpredictable oeuvre is never all that easy to pigeonhole, yet it still caught us off guard – in the best kind of way. Piano and synth float over intermittently spare and busier beats, vocals and textural waves of sound. What really sets it apart is the mood – we don't want to call it somber, but it's definitely got a haunting feel! Includes "Heavy Petting", "Forgive Me?", "To Repel Ghosts", "Pebble Dash", "Tissues & Fivers", "Botley In Bloom", "Fancy Restaurant", "On Compton Bay", "Rollo's Ivory Tale" and more.

Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles — Over The Rainbow ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $15.99
Very early work by Patti LaBelle – working here with the young Bluebelles group, but in a setting that still points the way towards the Labelle sound of the 70s – given that the quartet also features vocals from Cindy Birdsong, Sarah Dash, and Nona Hendryx! The style is a great mix of female doo wop and uptown soul – harmony styles really maturing strongly for the 60s, and already taking strong advantage of the amazing vocals of Patti LaBelle! Things are sweet, but have a nice edge too – and even the familiar tunes take on a new life in the hands of the group – as you'll hear on "Over The Rainbow", "People", "More", "Groovy Kind Of Love", "He", "Patti's Prayer", and "Unchained Melody".

Oscar Peterson — In A Romantic Mood ... LP
Verve, 1955. Very Good- .... $4.99
We love Oscar Peterson with strings – a setting he never got to use that often, given the popularity of his famous trio recordings! When Oscar gets set up with strings, he seems to play even more freely than with a combo – let loose from rhythm a bit more than before, and instead focusing strongly on melody – which often comes off with a warmly lyrical feel. This album's a rare entry into the Peterson strings category – a great 50s date with Russ Garcia backing Oscar up – giving the album just the right mix of mellow and modern to match Peterson's magical work on the keys! In a way, the album's a link between two different styles of 50s jazz – some of the warmer string-laden work of the piano mainstream, and some of the sharper sounds of the Verve modern approach to the style – served up here by Oscar in ways that bring both modes together perfectly, with just the right dash of both. Titles include "Laura" and "Tenderly" – both tracks you'd have to have on an album like this – plus "Black Coffee", "Ruby", "Stella By Starlight", "A Sunday Kind Of Love", and "I Thought About You".
(Red & yellow label Verve Inc pressing, with deep groove. Cover has fading and discoloration due to age)

Joe Sample — Carmel ... LP
ABC, 1979. Very Good+ .... $6.99
God, we love this record – and we're not ashamed to admit it! Sure, it sold a gazillion copies – and sure, for some folks it showed the true demise of the Crusaders ensemble. But for us, it's a masterpiece of smooth fusion, and a landmark album of easy jazz that spawned countless imitators that could never hope to match Sample's simple and elegant use of funky riffing and lyrical chords – coming in with just the right dash of darkness when the record's in danger of sounding too light. Most of the rest of the Crusaders had a hand in the record, and the set's got the smooth west coast sound you'd expect from the title. Tracks include "Carmel", "Cannery Row", "Sunrise", and "More Beautiful Each Day".

new SOS Band — SOS (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $15.99
The seminal first album from the SOS Band – a record that really showcases the new sound of soul for the 80s, yet still holds onto all the best elements of the previous decade too! These guys have a great ear for groovers – well-demonstrated by the play they got on the dancefloor – yet they've also got a deeper sense of soul than some of their club contemporaries as well – heard not just on the ensemble vocals for the upbeat tracks, but especially on some of the album's great mellow steppers too! It's these laidback cuts that have always kept the album strong for us – showing that SOS are way more than just another fast funk band, and can really go deep, and stay with it for the long haul. Fred Wesley helped a bit on the arrangements – and titles include "Take Your Time", "Love Won't Wait For Love", "SOS (Dit Dit Dit Dash Dash Dash Dit Dit Dit)", "Take Love Where You Find It", and "Open Letter". Great new version – book-style cover, detailed notes, and bonus tracks that include "SOS (edit)", "SOS (special disco mix)", "Take Your Time (parts 1 & 2)", "Take Your Time (long version)", and "What's Wrong With Our Love Affair (edit)".

new Manfredo Fest — Brazilian Dorian Dream (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
T&M/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy .... $29.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sublime little set – quite possibly the greatest album ever from Brazilian keyboardist Manfredo Fest! Manfredo first cut his teeth on the bossa scene of the 60s – but by the time of this rare indie session, he'd moved up to the US – and was working with sweet keyboards to really electrify his groove! The record's a wonderful blend of 70s Brazilian fusion modes and just a dash of American soul – and in addition to Manfredo's wonderful work on Fender Rhodes, the set also has these brilliant vocals from Roberta Davis – a singer who works wordlessly, using her voice as an instrument in this really cool way – sliding along with the grooves, and making the album sound unlike anything else we can think of. The overall feel is a bit like Joao Donato's excellent Quem E Quem album – and titles include "Jungle Cat", "Facing East", "Who Needs It", and "Brazilian Dorian Dream".

Truth & Soul, 2009. New Copy .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer instrumentals from the My World album by Lee Fields – a set that features none of Lee's vocals at all – just some great slow funk grooves by The Expressions! The vibe here is wonderful – even without Fields on deck – and in a way, leaving the vocals off unlocks a whole new side of the album's brilliance – showing the kind of roots the group hits with their music. The Expressions features the mighty Leon Michels on sax, bass, guitar, and keyboards – and overall, there's plenty of El Michels' elements in the music – slow, snakey rhythms – a slight dash of southern funk – and a great way of staying mellow and laidback, yet still funky and soulful too! Titles include "Money Is King", "My World Is Empty", "Love Comes & Goes", "Do You Love Me", "These Moments", and "Ladies".

A great little album of mid 70s funk from Ramsey Lewis – very much in the mode of his Earth, Wind, & Fire related work – no surprise, since the album's dedicated to Charles Stepney, whose influence was such a key part of the sound of the group, and of some of Ramsey's other Kalimba-produced albums from a few years before! Ramsey plays Fender Rhodes, mini moog, and Arp – and he gets help on keyboards from Stevie Wonder and Derf Reklaw, who also plays saxes and percussion on the set. new Raphael Saadiq — Way I See It ... CD
Columbia, 2008. New Copy .... $8.99 13.98 Out Of Stock
Raphael Saadiq takes throwback soul and r&b to the next level on The Way I See It – rolling in a groove that recalls 60s Motown, grittier group soul, the sophisticated strings of the 70s scene, and subtle contemporary touches that keep it in the here and now! An awareness of the past and the ability to replicate the sounds would be useless without great songs and vocals – and Raphael brings it in both realms – his voice has never sounded better and there's a catchiness to each of these tunes that betters the best pop soul of the past couple years. If that's not enough, Raphael handles most of the instrumentation himself, too! Niceness from one of the pivotal singers/songwriters/producers of the past couple decades. Titles include "Sure Hope You Mean It", "100 Yard Dash", "Keep Marchin", "Big Easy", "Just One Kiss" featuring a fine background turn by Joss Stone, "Love That Girl", "Calling", "Staying In Love", "Never Give You Up" featuring Stevie Wonder's inimitable harmonica & CJ Hilton on vocals, "Sometimes". and the bonus track "Oh Girl" featuring Jay Z.

Blue Mitchell — Bantu Village ... CD
Blue Note/Soul Brother (UK), 1969. New Copy .... $16.99
One of the funkiest albums ever on Blue Note – a set that mixes the trumpet talents of Blue Mitchell with some killer backings from Monk Higgins – all in a groove that more gritty edges than the best funky soundtracks of the time! Higgins keeps the backings full, but always quite lean – fusing all elements together into a sharp, tight rhythm that steps along with some of the slight African touches you might guess from the title – a groove that's not really that authentic, but which resonates with some of the best inspirations that Hugh Masekela was bringing to American music at the time. And while the album might be an attempt to cash in on Masekela's groove, the feel here is really quite different overall – as tracks are nicely stretched out, with plenty of room for jazzy solo work – and a groove that's much harder overall, thanks to Higgins! Other players include Freddy Robinson on guitar, Wilton Felder on bass, Paul Humphrey on drums, and Plas Johnson on tenor – and titles include "HNIC", "Flat Backing", "Na Ta Ka", "Bantu Village", and "Blue Dashiki".

Electric Cowbell, 2013. New Copy .... $9.99
Sublime vocal work from a contemporary Georgian ensemble – but one who work strongly in the best ancient modes of the Eastern world! The group have an amazing polyphonic approach – voices rising and falling, crossing and turning, coming together in a way that's far more than usual choral work – with a heavenly quality that's completely transcendent! The approach is a bit like some of the Bulgarian choral work made popular a few decades back, but also a bit more folksy too – given the personal approach of the recording, and the use of light acoustic instrumentation and percussion from time to time – although the vocal passages are clearly the main focus here. CD features 25 tracks in all – some traditional, some more recent, all of them beautiful!

Despite the "primitivist" sort of leanings you might expect from the "roots" in the title, this is actually a nice batch of tracks from the catalogs of Blue Note and World Pacific during the 60's – and they're all jazz tracks that have a slight Africanist influence, but which are certainly not African tracks themselves. The 13 tracks include loads of nice hard to find ones, including "Blue Dashiki" by Blue Mitchell, "Appointment in Ghana" by the Jazz Crusaders, "Marabi" by Cannonball Adderley, "Ghana Spice" Candido, "Zulu" by Randy Weston, "Zambia" by Lee Morgan, and "Follow Me To Africa" by Solomon Ilori & His Afro Drum Ensemble.
