Great late 70s work from Jimmy Smith – two albums back to back on a single CD! One of our favorite later albums from organist Jimmy Smith – and a set that cooks heavily in a wicked blend of jazz, funk, and soul! The style's a bit like the groove that Johnny Hammond hit during his Gears period – arranged by Eugene McDaniels and Alan Silvestri, with an approach that's somewhere between Larry Mizell and Skip Scarborough – tight grooves, bits of vocals, yet plenty of room for Smith's keyboard solos to take off over the top! Players include Herbie Hancock on piano, Alan Silvestri on guitar, and Lenny White on drums – but the main star is Jimmy – who's grooving massively over the top of the album, with soaring solos that are some of his best work from the late 70s. Our favorite track on here is a masterful take of "Can't Hide Love", but there's a lot of other nice funky tracks like "Slippery Hips", "My Place In Space", and "Give Up the Booty". Unfinished Business is mighty soulful business from the great Jimmy Smith – a set for Mercury Records that updates his sound slightly, yet also hits some classic Hammond lines too! Jimmy plays a bit of acoustic piano and keyboards in addition to his classic organ – and works here in a setting that's tightly arranged, yet mostly small combo – with work from Ray Crawford on guitar, Nolan Phillips on tenor and flute, and added percussion from Buck Clarke and Stephanie Spruill. Rhythms step along nicely in kind of a 70s take on 60s soul jazz modes – leaving lots of room for Jimmy to open up on his solos – but there's also a few other more ambitious moments, including a great take on "Serpentine Fire" arranged by Ronnie Foster – and a warmly wonderful "Stevie" – which is a suite of tracks dedicated to Stevie Wonder. Other titles include "8 Counts For Rita", "Blues For Charlie", "Until It's Time For You To Go", and "Norristown PA".

A tight collection of uptempo funk and disco-driven soul tunes – with a selection that goes way past the usual dancefloor favorites! We're not sure how to read the title (which seems to have some sort of "inside take" on black culture in America) so we'll write that off to the overzealous imagination of the British compilers of the set – but we will say that the package includes some great numbers that we wouldn't have thought of otherwise, including a few previously unissued tunes by artists on the Westbound label! The birth of a genius – and Dionne Warwick's first album in a mighty 60s run for Scepter Records! The album's the first full length collaboration between Warwick and the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David – but it's already the stuff of legend – an album that easily bridges the worlds of soul, vocal, and pop with its unique sense of poise and class – sung perfectly by Dionne throughout, and arranged with orchestral brilliance by the young Burt! Titles include "Don't Make Me Over", "Wishin & Hopin", "Make It Easy On Yourself", "The Love Of A Boy", "I Cry Alone", "Make The Music Play", "If You See Bill", "It's Love That Really Counts", and "This Empty Place".

Although he's best known for his albums on Capitol, David Axelrod cut this great record for Fantasy during the mid-70s, and it features Cannonball Adderley producing Axelrod's work (instead of the other way around, as on Cannonball's albums from the time). The tracks here are a bit more jazz funk oriented than earlier stuff, but there's still the great Axelrod sense of composition, with lots of space, and lots of spare cold bits that are nice nice nice for sample cuts! As proof of this, the reissue includes his classic track "Everything Counts", plus other nice ones that include "Get Up Off Your Knees", "My Family", and "Mucho Chupar".

A great later score from Riz Ortolani – and one that shows off the best talents for reaching out to time and place he developed in the 60s! The film's a WWII narrative – but Ortolani's music is often a lot more than you'd expect – occasionally scene-setting in its construction, yet with a more modern filmic aspect that carries a feel that's almost more epic than the images on the screen! The gentle theme is especially haunting – with some nice sensual overtones – and titles include "From Hell To Victory", "Accounts To Render", "Paris 1945", "Fabienne Theme", "Nicole Theme", "Hearts In Suspense", and "Toward The Victory".

Searing work from guitarist Jesse Hector – an unusual link between punks and rockers on the British scene of the 70s! Jesse's got a career that spans 40 decades in rock – starting with early garagey recordings that were influenced heavily by American acts of the late 50s, but done in a stripped-down way that shared plenty of energy with the early punks – even if Hector's own leanings weren't as punk-like. His work with Crushed Butler at the end of the 60s has already been brilliantly re-discovered by another CD on RPM – and this collection presents tracks from around and well after those years – recordings done mostly in the 70s, plus a few surprisingly great tracks from the early 90s that actually seem to have even sharper guitar work and more propulsive energy. There's a sense of power and personality here that makes us wonder why Jesse's not more of a household name in accounts of these years – but part of the charm of this set is also that mystery – why a talents so strong didn't burn more brightly in the public eye! CD has great notes on all the tracks – and features 20 titles that include "Carolina", "Leavin Town", "Runnin Wild", "Foxy Lady", "New York Groover", "I'm A Liar", "Gatecrasher", "She's My Gal", "Leavin Home", "Factory Grime", and "Love Is All Around Me".

Heavy funk from Teena Marie – a self-produced killer for mid 80s Epic Records – done with some even bolder grooves than before, in ways that definitely show the hallmarks of the Prince generation! The 80s was a hell of a good time to be a female funk artist on her own – and Teena more than takes advantage of that fact here – stepping out with a proud, loud groove that's undeniable – very much a female-positive moment that some folks occasionally overlook in their accounts of 80s soul. All tracks are Teena originals, right on the money – and titles include "Emerald City", "Once Is Not Enough", "You So Heavy", "Lips To Find You", "Love Me Down Easy", and "Sunny Skies".

The complete newspaper appearances of Al Capp's famous Shmoo – the weird and wonderful character that was one of the standouts of Capp's Lil Abner comic strip! The Shmoo's a whole food industry in itself – a lovable lil guy who's as productive as he is cuddly – extremely friendly, very edible (and tasty too), and able to produce milk, butter, and eggs at well – not to mention reproduce endlessly, which accounts for the flurry of Schmoo images on the cover. Capp often used the character as commentary on consumer society – and the political overtones get even stronger as the stories move into the 60s and 70s. The book begins with the Shmoo's first appearance in 1948, then collects stories through 1976 – and also features rare photos, other illustrations, and even a cool look at the huge amount of Shmoo products that came out during the mid-century marketing heyday of Lil Abner. Oversize, with black and white art, and nice and heavy!
