CortexCortex Volume 2 ... LP
Trad Vibe (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99
The second album by Cortex – the obscure French jazz group that's been a favorite of funky collectors for years! The group's got a strong fusion-driven groove on this set – with plenty of tight drumming, hard riffing, and spacey keyboards that give the tunes a nicely soulful finish. The best tracks are actually the mellower ones, which have a nice use of space and sound – creating strong little patterns of groove that stand out from the rest of the tracks. Lots of work on Fender Rhodes, mini korg, Hammond, and clavinette – and titles include "Poxa", "Datura", "Regina", "Mister J", "Efficace Swing", "Oh Lord", and "Devil's Dance".

CortexTroupeau Bleu (with bonus track) ... CD
Underdog (France), 1975. New Copy .... $16.99
A legendary bit of funky fusion from the French scene of the 70s – the standout set from Cortex, a combo who's very heavy on the keyboards! The tunes have a feel that's quite different than American electric work of the time – funky, but also a bit breezy too – with a strong Brazilian influence in some of the rhythms, and hip use of female vocals alongside the Fender Rhodes – which makes for a double layer of sound that's totally great! There's a bit of alto sax in the instrumentation, but most of the sound comes from the interplay between keyboards, voice, bass, and drums – rolling along in a sound that's stunningly soulful, and which makes the record one of the hippest European dates from the decade. Tremendous all the way through – with tracks that include "Automne", "L'Enfant Samba", "La Rue", "Go Round", "Madbass", "Sabbat", "Mary Et Jeff", and "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver". This CD version includes the bonus track "Jazz Dance".

new Cortex8 Octobre 1971/Devil's Dance ... 7-inch
Trad Vibe (France), 1970s. New Copy .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Groovy jazz funk from Cortex on a funky 45! "8 Octobre 1971" has one of the most wicked bass lines we've ever heard from Cortex, with some funky drums, spacey keys and dreamy female vocals. "Devil's Dance" also has a great bassline, with piano out front in the mix and a more energetic tempo overall.

new CortexPourquoi ... CD
Trad Vibe (France), 1978. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lost later slice of work from Cortex – a bit tighter than some of the group's previous albums, but equally funky overall! There's a bit less jamming here than before, the Cortex have definitely developed an ear for the dancefloor – a jazzy funk style that would be perfect in the clubs, even though it's light years from conventional disco. Vocals are a bit more upfront in the mix at times, but there's still loads of heavy keyboards – including Fender Rhodes, clavinet, micro moog, and more! Titles include "Runnin From You", "Le Visionaire", "Pourquoi", "Make Me Love You", "Matin Girls", "La Bulle", and "Pauvre Star".

new CortexInedit 79 ... CD
Underdog/Rue Stendhal (France), 1979. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
Lost funky work from Cortex – previously unissued material from this famous 70s combo from France – filled with jazzy rhythms and plenty of great keyboard work! The style is a bit more soul-based than on the first few Cortex albums – with English language vocals on most numbers, soaring out along with the keyboards into the grooves – but the overall sound of the album is still super-tight, and very much in the mode of the best US jazz funk from the late 70s with vocals – such as later work on Kudu or Fantasy Records. The uptempo numbers have a nice clubby feel – but never one that's too disco, just jazz funk for the dancefloor – and the CD features 12 numbers that include "Said I Do", "Stand & Move", "Moanin", "I Heard A Sigh", "Back To My World", "A Winning Team", "High On The Funk", "Mailys", and "Emily".

new CortexLet's Groove! (with download) ... LP
Trad Vibe (France), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
Alain Mion leads a new Cortex – grooving nicely, too – doing it live in Paris! Mion is at the grand piano for a good deal of the first side, energetically leading a great group on some stellar, timelessly jazzy numbers. The second half of the set has him on Fender Rhodes, for tracks that fully dive into the jazz funk vibe of classic Cortex. The musicians are fantastic, too! Patrik Boman on bass, Gerard Prevost on electric bass, Adeline De Lepinay on percussion and some vocals, Michael Kersting on drums, and a great lineup of soulful saxes: "Loic Soulat Pietro Tonolo, Greg Deletang, Romano Pratesi and Phil Brohet. Includes a nice set of Mion originals including "Phila Nite Song", "The Wrong Soul Blues", "When The Ship Sails Away", "East St. Louis, 1917", "The Tap Tap", "Green Street" and more.
(Includes MP3 download.)

Mr Chop — Switched On (LP style sleeve) ... CD
Traffic, 2011. New Copy Gatefold .... $14.99 15.98
Switched On funk from Mr Chop! Here's an homage to the innovative Moog-based LPs of the late 60s and early 70s – though the the great UK analog studio wiz Mr Chop is also doing it hard and heavy – it's not a light, airy and bubbly keyboard groove experience – this is spacey, fuzzy avant funk at its modern finest! Produced and engineered by Mr Chop and the players are like-minded geniuses – Malcolm Catto on drums, Coz Litter on bass, guitar, vocoder and more, Glyn Williams on clavinet, Moog, Hammond and Rhodes, Johnny Pop on Hammond organ and Mark Brunley on modular synth. The set includes some covers of funk and avant rock like you've never heard them before, and it's great all the way. Titles include "Hung-Up", "Root Down (And Get It)", "Breakthrough", "Givin Up Food For Funk", "Blow Your Head", "Deep Gully", "Greedy G", "Happy Birthday", "Vitamin C" and "Cortex".

new Sandro Brugnolini — Overground ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Weird instrumental grooves from composer Sandro Brugnolini – played by a small combo that almost has a sound library feel! We know Brugnolini most from his soundtrack work, and this set's got a similar flair for odd sounds and weird rhythms – played here by a group that features organ, two guitars, bass, and drums – plus lots of unusual effects that make the whole thing sound strange and trippy! The music is a weird amalgam of funky jazz and soundtrack modes – familiar at points, but really offbeat at others – with a few key groovers mixed with mellower, more atmospheric numbers. Titles include "Cromaton", "Amofen", "Celluin", "Andrie's Dream", "Roxy", "Simanite", "Brain", and "Cortex".
