An obscure Jazz Messengers session – but a great one! The album is ostensibly a set of jazz versions of tunes from the musical Golden Boy, and the group this time is a larger one than usual – a total of 10 players, led by Blakey – and playing beautifully over arrangements from Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Cedar Walton! The style's not any sort of clunky "jazz meets Broadway" mode, though – as the care taken by the artists involved help elevate the tunes, and the performance, to a whole new soulful level – hardly what you'd expect! The group features trumpet work from Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, tenor from Wayne Shorter, alto from James Spaulding, trombone from Curtis Fuller, baritone from Charles Davis, piano from Cedar Walton, and bass from Reggie Workman – all very hip cats, working here with the same sort of large group textures you might hear on Freddie Hubbard's Body & Soul album from the same time, mixed with some more traditionally Blakey-led moments. Titles include "Yes I Can", "Theme From Golden Boy", "Lorna's Here", "This is The Life", and "There's A Party".

Nice little soundtrack, written as the follow-up to the 1962 film The Interns. Like that one, there's some nice party sequences here – easily jazzy numbers grooving along nicely, in the style of Hagen's best work of the 60s. Strings mix with jazzy rhythms and some strong instrumental solos, and overall, the soundtrack's really a strong cut above the usual one for this type of movie – and filled with some really great jazz-based tracks. Titles include "Goodbye To Nancy", "Needle Stickin Blues", "Split", "Considine & Laura", "A Matter Of Time", "A Slight Case Of Rape", and "New Interns Watusi".

A spare and dramatic score for this film that starred Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, and Omar Sharif – penned by Maurice Jarre with some slight Spanish touches, to fit the setting of the narrative! Light guitar is used on many numbers – but with a very high-register sort of sound that almost feels like harpsichord at moments – and other tracks feature an isolated flute snaking along the tunes slowly, carving out some nice moods and colors with a fair bit of subtlety. Orchestrations are relatively subdued throughout – and for the time, the music is wonderfully understated – especially for Jarre! Titles include "Manuel In San Martin", "Paco Leaving Spain", "Spanish Street", "Manuel Studies Map", and "Father Francisco In Hospital".

Beautiful set of polished soul tracks, sung by Freddie in his deep rich voice, amidst uptown arrangements by Gary Sherman. There's a great batch of cuts that includes Freddie's hit versions of "Hey Girl" and "I Got A Woman", plus "What Do I See In The Girl", "Where Is The Girl", and "Where Does Love Go".

A lost Sonny Stitt session from the 60s – but wonderfully swinging, and with a groove that really works well! The album's a set of Broadway tunes played jazz-wise – but in the hands of Stitt, they come up wonderfully – stretching out with soulful intensity that's mighty nice, amidst a larger ensemble that makes for a nice contrast from some of Sonny's smaller group sessions! Stitt plays both alto and tenor – and the group features some excellent other hornmen in the lineup – Zoot Sims, Jerome Richardson, and Budd Johnson on tenor saxes, Phil Woods on alto, and Thad Jones on trumpet – plus Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums. Stitt's in the lead here – blowing cleanly and confidently, much more soaringly than on earlier records, and without the tricks of later electric ones. Titles include "Gimme Some", "Night Song", "Better All The Time", "You'd Better Love Me", and "Loads Of Love".

An interesting tribute to the passing of pianist Eddie Costa – mostly because the overall feel is much more in a soulful hardbop mode, quite different than the modern and chamber sides that Costa cut during the 50s! Side one features work by the Clark Terry quartet – with Terry on trumpet, Dick Hyman on piano, Art Davis on drums, and Osie Johnson on bass – and side two features and even better group led by Coleman Hawkins – with Hawk blowing in that great late solo style of his, alongside players that include Sonny Clark, Roy Haynes, and Chuck Israels. Tracks on the album are all long and intimate – mellow, but soulful, with plenty of interesting solo space. Titles include "The Simple Waltz", "Just You Just Me", "I'm Confessin", and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be".

Diamond Head is a great early score from Johnny Williams – penned for a film set in Hawaii, with a cast that includes Charlton Heston, James Darren, and George Chakiris! Williams' score is a mix of tropical themes, dramatic modes, and a number of groovier-styled tunes – music that's a bit more like some of his work for 60s comedies, with slight twists and turns that keep things interesting. And even the dramatic tunes, while done with a fair bit of strings, show a much lighter approach than most other work of the time – and these tunes are offset by others that use woodwinds in a really great way, almost with a snakeily evocative style that you might find in the lighter moments of a TV drama. Titles include "Luau Dance", "Sloan Strolls", "Catamaran", "Diamond Head Theme", "Mei Chen", and "Manoalani".

Second version of Woody's very first LP – and a pretty great album of standup material, cut back when he was just a budding writer for TV. The set was recorded at Mr Kelly's in Chicago, and has an easy going flow – with Woody just talking his way through material, almost in a Lenny Bruce sort of way.

Jazz from the heart of the cold war – not actually recorded in Moscow, but featuring a bunch of hip players on their return from a tour of the Soviet Union – a historic moment in which west met east, with some groovy jazz in the offing! Apart from the tenor of Zoot Sims and alto of Phil Woods, the record also features flute and alto from Jerry Dodgion, trombone from Willie Dennis, trumpets from Markie Markowitz and Jimmy Maxwell, and piano from Eddie Costa – and the set features arrangements from Al Cohn on tracks that hit the 5 minute range – tight at the top, with breakaway solos, as you might hear during some of the Cohn/Sims sides for RCA during the 50s! Titles include "Let's Dance", "Mission To Moscow", "The Sochi Boatman", and the obligatory "Russian Lullaby".

Dick Gregory raps it proud and loud – in a set of recordings that features one side recorded on the east coast, and one on the west! Gregory's still very much a comedian at this point in his career, but already his work is peppered strongly with political elements – the kind of personal, earnest approach to his material that was years ahead of its time – and which went onto open the door for countless other comedians to come! Side one was recorded at The Blue Angel, and side two at The Hungry I.

A pair of Colpix classics from Nina Simone – back to back on a single CD! First up is Nina Sings Ellington – but as always, she makes whatever she sings all her own! The album's a bit straighter than later efforts – with large backings by Stu Phillips that also feature vocals by the Malcolm Dodds Singers – but Nina also conceived the whole thing herself, as an effort to bring a new level of spiritualism to Ellington's work. The result is a masterpiece – proof that even in her early years, Nina could completely transform anything she laid her hands on – and unlock a soulful depth that even the original recordings might have missed. Titles include "I Got It Bad", "Solitude", "The Gal From Joe's", "It Don't Mean A Thing", and "I Like The Sunrise". Nina At Carnegie Hall is a hip set of live tracks from Nina Simone – very dark and moody, with backing by only a small combo that includes two guitars, bass, and drums by Montego Joe. The songs are incredibly spare, with an approach that's intimate and emotional – almost stunningly so, considering the size and scope of the venue that Nina was performing in. Features a 7 minute reading of "The Other Woman" and "Cotton Eyed Joe" – plus "Black Swan", "If You Knew", "Theme From Sayonara", and "Will I Find My Love Today".

The groove here is often as soul-based as it is vocal jazz – thanks to arrangements from David Matthews, who brings a similar sound here to his other work with Esther Phillips in the decade – another older singer who'd hit some very hip territory at the time. The groove here is very much like Phillips' best for Kudu – smooth and soulful, but in ways that still retain all the rasp and character of the lead vocals. Titles include a sublime reading of Randy Newman's excellent "Baltimore", plus "The Family", "My Father", "Music For Lovers", "Rich Girl", and "Balm In Gilead".
