Jamie Coe/The Precisions — Cleopatra (2 versions) ... 7-inch
Popcorn (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $9.99
Two cool tributes to Cleopatra – each of them different, and each of them mighty nice! Jamie Coe comes across with a finger-snapping sort of jazzy groove – upbeat and swinging, and a perfect setting for his echoey vocals – which almost have a Bobby Darin sort of vibe as he grooves along the tune! The Precisions' tune is much more soulful – exotic-styled harmonies given a sweet organ undercurrent – with almost Salah Ragab-like lines that hold up the ancient Egypt theme!

John Coltrane, Ahmed Abdul Malik & Others — Jazz Soul Of Cleopatra ... LP
New Jazz, 1960s. Very Good+ .... $29.99
A various artist compilation Prestige put together to capitalize on the popularity of the Oscar-winning Elizabeth Taylor film Cleopatra with music that features Eastern and Egyptian themes. In spite of how you may feel about the concept, the set features some tracks that have become harder to come by on vinyl, and plays nicely whether you're considering the theme. . .or not. 5 tracks in all: "La Ibkey" by Ahmed Abdul Malik, "Taboo" by Yusef Lateef, "Anadolu Oyuni" by Oudi Hrant, "Ackmet" by dizzy Reece, and "Bakai" by John Coltrane.
(Purple label New Jazz pressing. Cover has some wear and discoloration from age.)

Carlo Rustichelli — Il Figlio Di Cleopatra/Coriolano Eroe Senza Patria ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1964. New Copy .... $22.99
Rousing peplum soundtrack work from maestro Carlo Rustichelli – with his work for Il Figlio Di Cleopatra and Coriolano, Eroe Senza Patria – 2 great soundtracks from 1964! Most of the CD is devoted to Il Figlio Di Cleopatra – and it's exciting stuff! The strings really lead the way on this one, which really soar in the grander moments, and stir elegantly in the more subtle ones – with some great, galloping percussion and seductive winds when needed. About 75% of this great Digitmovies CD is the Cleopatra material – but it closes with 5 sequences of the title theme for Coriolano, Eroe Senza Patria – which was all of the new original material Rustichelli specifically composed for that film – and it nicely bookends this great Digitmovies CD!

new JJ Johnson/Dominic Frontiere — Cleopatra Jones/Cleopatra Jones & The Casino Of Gold ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1973/1975. New Copy 2CD .... $24.99 Out Of Stock
An amazing double-header – and a set that really adds a lot more music than we might have expected! First up is a richly expanded version of Cleopatra Jones – one of the best of the blacksploitation scores of the early 70s – a masterpiece of music that we rate every bit as high as Shaft or Superfly – maybe even higher! The music here is incredible – a surprising funky turn for JJ Johnson, who most folks know for his straighter jazz work – and like Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and others who were surprising the world with their ability to score music for a full film during the early 70s, JJ really knocks it out of the park with this one – coming up with a batch of tunes that are a wonderful mix of sophisticated scoring, creative instrumentation, and some damn funky grooves! The title cut features Joe Simon on vocals, and Millie Jackson sings on the cuts "Love Doctor" and "It Hurts So Good". The rest of the set is instrumental, and other cuts include an instrumental take on "Cleopatra Jones", plus "Go Chase Cleo", "Goin To The Chase", "Wrap Up", and "Airport Fight". This new version features 17 bonus tracks from the original film score, not the record – amazing extra music by Carl Brandt, with titles that include "Emdee", "Elevator/Cleo & Captain", "Pot Burn/Mommy/Police Raid", "Ambush", "Doodle Apartment", "Before Crash", and "Snake Crib". CD 2 features some long-lost music from the film Cleopatra Jones & The Casino Of Gold – a well-known follow-up to the original movie, but one that was never properly represented on record – making this CD set a long-awaited premiere of the original music for the film! The set features music by Dominic Frontiere – penned in a mix of funky action modes, with some slight exotic touches too, due to the location of the story. Frontiere's in his best soul/funk mode – a side that few folks realize he can do this well – and the music has a slightly different feel than JJ Johnson's Cleo Jones work, but is equally nice. Titles include "Casino Source", "Chopped Meat", "Oymia", "Les Orgie", "Fatman Stomp", "Dead Dragon Lady", and "Pool Hall Rock" – plus the vocal number "Playing With Fire". CD also features 4 more bonus tracks from Cleopatra Jones – including extended versions of the theme, and Pattie Brooks singing "Swing Down Chariot" and "Am I Blue". Great notes too – very full, with lots of photos, in the best Film Score tradition!
(Limited edition of 3000 copies.)

Bo Diddley — Bo Diddley Live 1984 ... LP

Titles include "Intro/Bo Diddley", "Doctor Jekyll", "Everleen", "I Don't Know Where I've Been", "You Can't Judge A Book By It's Cover", "I'm A Man", "Road Runner" and "Mona".

Nektar — Journey To The Centre Of The Eye ... LP
Cleopatra, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $17.99
A classic bit of mainstream prog from Nektar – a group who were a big part of the German underground of the early 70s, but who also managed to make some waves on this side of the Atlantic as well! Nektar aren't as full-on or focused as some of the prog acts who cracked the charts at the time, but they do have a tightness that rivals some of the best of the up-and-coming groups to secure a major label contract – particularly deft musicianship that really stands out in its complexity, at a level that might draw some comparisons with Gentle Giant – although probably not as arty or obtuse, given that these guys could be a bit more straightforward. The set's got some especially great mellotron next to other keyboards and guitar – and titles include "Countenance", "Death Of The Mind", "Pupil Of The Eye", "The Dream Nebula", and "Warp Oversight".
Also available: Journey To The Centre Of The Eye (with bonus tracks) ... CD $13.99

Elliot Lawrence/John Neel/Elmer Bernstein — Lord Of The Flies – Plus Great Themes ... LP
AVA, Early 60s. Very Good+ .... $0.49
A strange little record – one that features a few tracks by Lawrence from Lord Of The Flies, The Great Chase, and David & Lisa – mixed with others from films that include To Kill A Mockingbird, Rat Race, Mutiny On The Bounty, and other films. Most of the material is pretty orchestral – and titles include "Lord Of The Flies", "Way Down East", and "Theme From David & Lisa" by Elliot Lawrence; "Rat Race", "A Girl Named Tamiko", "Two Weeks In Another Town", and "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Bernstein; "Cleopatra's Barge" by John Neel; and "Love Theme From Period Of Adjustment", "Our Language Of Love", and "Love Song From Mutiny On the Bounty" by Harry Betts.

Johnny Hammond Smith — Stinger ... LP
Prestige, 1965. Very Good- .... $19.99
A great little groover from Johnny Hammond Smith – and one of his rarest albums! The record may be rare because it's got a strange cover that features a comic character that looks like the Green Lantern, and Prestige might have gotten nervous about copyright infringement – but more likely they held it back because the record was such a good one! Johnny's in great form on the Hammond, and his combo really cooks nicely – with Floyd Smith on guitar, Earl Edwards on tenor, and Houston Person sitting in for the version of the title cut. The set features a great version of Smith's groover "Cleopatra & The African Knight", plus "Benny's Diggin", "There Is No Greater Love", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "The Stinger", and "Brother John".
(Blue label pressing. Cover has a bent corner, a small center split on the top seam, and some aging.)

Various — Can You Dig It? – The Music & Politics Of Black Action Films 1968 to 1975 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99
Possibly the best-ever collection of blacksploitation grooves we've ever seen – a really comprehensive package that not only manages to cover the classics, but which also digs deep enough to come up with lots of fresh bits too! The set really sets a new level for the Soul Jazz label – and is carried off with enough authority towards Black Action films as the label's legendary efforts towards a host of less mainstream genres – truly an achievement for the label's crew, not to mention a heavier bonus for our funky listening pleasure! There's way more here than just a slapped-together batch of tunes from the early 70s – as the set's very carefully put together to showcase a wide range of sounds, along with notes that really get at the social and political power of both the music and the films. 2CD package features a massive color booklet inside the slipcase – and features 34 tracks that include "Shaft In Africa" by Johnny Pate, "Down & Out In New York City" by James Brown, "Wilford's Gone" by The Blackbyrds, "Run Fay Run" by Isaac Hayes, "Theme From Black Belt Jones" by Dennis Coffey, "Willie Chase" by JJ Johnson, "T Plays It Cool" by Marvin Gaye, "Charley" by Don Costa, "Brother's Gonna Work It Out" by Willie Hutch, "Blacula" by Gene Page, "Theme From Cleopatra Jones" by Joe Simon, "Pursuit Of The Pimpmobile" by Isaac Hayes, "Sweetback's Theme" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Aragon" by Roy Ayers, "Strung Out" by Gordon Staples, "Easin In" by Edwin Starr, "The Bus" by Solomon Burke & Gene Page, "Make A Resolution" by The Impressions, "Ed & Digger" by Cotton Comes To Harlem, "Las Vegas Strut" by Jack Ashford, "Lay It On Your Head" by Don Julian, and "Zombie March" by Nat Dove & The Devils.

new Johnny Hammond Smith — Little Taste (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Riverside/Universal (Japan), 1963. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A sweet little taste of the early years of organist Johnny Hammond Smith – and a set that's noteworthy as much for the work on horns as it is for his own performance on Hammond! The set has Johnny working with two great young talents – Virgil Jones on trumpet and Houston Person on tenor – both of whom really cook the set up strongly, and throw in searing solos that not only help drive all the tracks, but which really point the way towards some of the more modern directions that organ jazz was taking in the 60s – a shift that really sets this album apart from previous records by Smith! Arrangements are wonderful – soulful and modern, almost in a Jack McDuff sort of way – and titles include Smith's soulful classic "Cleopatra & The African Knight", plus "Benny's Diggin", "Brake Through", and "Twixt The Sheets".

new Jutta Hipp — Jutta Hipp Quintet With Joki Freund (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
L+R Records/Jazzhus Disk (Japan), 1954. New Copy .... $26.99 Out Of Stock
Incredible postwar bop recordings by one of the hippest groups in Germany! During the 50s, pianist Jutta Hipp cut a number of straighter sides for Blue Note that were recorded in the US – but this CD features earlier German recordings, some later issued by Blue Note – all done with a killer quintet that features a young Joki Freund on tenor sax and Emil Mangelsdorff on alto! Jutta's core trio features Hans Kresse on bass and Karl Sanner on drums – but the real charm of the records is the horn players – working with amazing interplay that really makes the record shine – working in unison on many of the intros to the songs, cutting back and forth like a double-edged sword, then breaking out into wonderfully compact solos that easily rival the best of the west coast at the time! Titles include "Cleopatra", "Mon Petit", "Yogi", "Variations", "Laura", "Simone", "Two Oranges", and "Cool Dogs".

new Eddie Holland — It Moves Me – The Complete Recordings 1958 to 1964 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99 Out Of Stock
A beautiful collection of all the great and rare material Eddie Holland cut as solo singer in the late 50s and early 60s – including the incredible early Motown material, plus tracks he cut for Mercury, Kudo, Tamla and United Artists! Of course Eddie Holland is best remembered for uber-legendary work as producer, composer and arranger with the Holland-Dozier-Holland super soul unit – for damn good reason, but it's his early work as singer is way too strong to be considered a mere footnote to his greater legacy. Many of the cuts were written and produced by Berry Gordy, along with numbers written and produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier, some recorded more famously by later acts, so what you truly have here is the foundation for great things to come – it's beautiful stuff that shines brightly in its own light. Eddie's a solid singer and the songs are terrific, formative stuff that's a pivotal bridge from earlier R&B to massive soul. 56 tracks on 2CDs: "Little Miss Ruby", "Will You Love Me", "Just A Few More Days", "It's Not Too Late", "Just Ain't Enough Love", "Brenda", "Baby Shake", "Magic Mirror", "If Cleopatra Took A Chance", "Action Speaks Louder than Words", "Bashful Kind", "Too Late To Cry", "Happy Go Lucky", "Pretty Little Angel Face", "Day Dreamer", "Rain And Thunder", "I Like Everything About You", "Happy Days" and many more. This set goes deeper than any compilation we've seen of Eddie's recordings, too, with a number of previously unissued Mercury recordings.
