From the transitional period when Chuck and co. were moving from the harder funk style of their Sussex days to the Go Go sound they'd help pioneer in DC, with a style that combines both, with a bottom heavy groove, wiry guitar, horn stabs and percolating percussion. 7-inch, Vinyl record

ChuckBrown & The SoulSearchers —
Bustin' Loose ... CD Source/Valley Vue, 1979. Used ...

ChuckBrown and his SoulSearchers group are past the arch jazzy funk of their days on Sussex Records – and they're heading more towards that ensemble sound that would drive the DC Go Go scene in the early 80s. The formula is heard to best effect on the big hit "Bustin Loose", an old school party funk jam that you'll probably recognize immediately – and which put Chuck and the group firmly back on the map for another few years! The group also does a pretty good remake of "If It Ain't Funky", which was on one of the earlier SoulSearchers albums – and the album includes the original cuts "Gotcha Now" and "Game Seven". CD
A late 80s album of Go Go recorded live at the Capital Centre, with 4 nice tracks of bass heavy, syncopated DC funk. ChuckBrown & The SoulSearchers perform "Run Joe", a later number that bumps along at a fat low tempo, and Experience Unlimited turn in "Go Ju Ju Go", a nod to their affiliation with Plunky Nakabinde of Oneness of Ju Ju, though sadly his reed work does not seem to be featured. DC Scorpio and Little Benny & The Masters add some hip hop crossover into the mix with their MC plus Go Go band cuts "Stone Cold Hustler" and "Cat In The Hat". LP, Vinyl record album

We The People ... LP Sussex, 1972. New Copy (reissue)...

One the all time great funky albums of the 70s – a mad little record with a sense of rhythm and timing that was years ahead of its time! The SoulSearchers (along with ChuckBrown) later became known for their heavy-hitting Go Go work at the end of the decade – but here, they're a really free-thinking outfit with a lot of jazz in their funk – and a willingness to change up the beats and timings in ways that push the record miles ahead from an average funk outing. Tracks swirl around with an amazing intensity – supported by guitar work from Brown, organ from Hilton Felton, and some really great horns from Don Tillery and Lloyd Pinchback. The album features a wonderful remake of "Think" – plus the great originals "1993", "Soul To The People", "Blowout", and "We The People". LP, Vinyl record album

There's nothing like the sound of Go Go music at its best – a long-spinning, hard-jamming approach to funk – one that borrows a few currents from hip hop, especially in the vocals – but which also stands as an exceptionally local extension of the funk ensemble sound of the 70s! Go Go had a brief run on the Washington DC scene of the early 80s – where these groups made some real magic for a short time – a newly-electrified version of funk, but one that still embraced the live, spontaneous way of putting tunes together that was pioneered by groups like The JBs or Kool & The Gang. This set brings together some wonderful singles from the best of the bunch during this generation – with tracks that include "Good To Go" and "It's In The Mix" by Slim, "Take It To The Top" by Skibone, "Arkade Funk" by Tilt, "EU Freeze" by EU, "Meet Me At The Go Go" by Hot Cold Sweat, "Say What" by Trouble Funk, "We Need Some Money" by ChuckBrown & The SoulSearchers, "Drop The Bomb" by Trouble Funk, and "Rock Yuh Butt" by EU. CD
ChuckBrown & the SoulSearchers, Experience Unlimited, Little Benny & The Masters and Rare Essence get together on this posse cut with a message, from around the time that the capitol city's murder statistics were raging out of control. 12-inch, Vinyl record
