One of their nice albums for RCA, with a sound that's a mix of ballads and up-tempo cuts, in the same style as a lot of other East Coast groups from the time. Van McCoy arranged and produced, and the LP includes their single "Hey, What's That Dance You're Doing", plus "Two Different Worlds", "Mysterious Lady", "Beautiful Glow", "Come Down To Earth", and "Everybody's Got A Story".

Hardly the surf music set you'd expect from the title – but still a set that's plenty surf-washed, thanks to a great choice of exotic numbers for the record! The Surfers are a vocal group, not a guitar-based instrumental combo – and they harmonize with a mixture of jazz and pop modes that's mighty nice – and very unique, given that many of the numbers here have a tropical theme – almost as if The Lettermen or Brothers Four decided to cut an exotica album! Titles include "Pagan Love Song", "Canoe Song", "Island Angel", "Follow Me", "Bali Hai", "Pearly Shells", and "Farewell".

Way more than just a disco collection – a great album with some had to get numbers you don't see much on vinyl any more. A pair of London Records albums from Margaret Whiting – back to back on a single CD, with bonus tracks too! Maggie Isn't Margaret Anymore is cool crossover pop from Whiting – a late 60s album that still draws strongly on her roots in jazz, but which also has Maggie trying on some younger styles too! The set isn't all 60s pop overall, but there's definitely a nice choice of tracks that goes way past the usual Margaret Whiting bag – although often arranged in ways that still hold more strongly to the sentimental echoes of Whiting's past. Titles include "This Is My Song", "Somethin Stupid", "If This Is Goodbye", "Because","Only Love Can Break A Heart", and "Just Like A Man". Pop Country is exactly what's promised in the album's title – a set of popular country numbers, sung by Margaret Whiting in a style that carries plenty of echoes of Nashville! The style is often soft and dreamy – with Whiting's blue-tinged vocals moving gently over backings that are usually given a slight bit of electric bass, just to step things along slowly. The approach works surprisingly well – a real winner for Margaret – and titles include "I Love You So Much It Hurts", "Release Me", "I Hate To See Me Go", "Am I Losing You", "You Don't Know Me", and "Gentle On My Mind". CD also features four totally groovy cuts – unreleased tracks that include "I'm Losin My Mind", "The Heart Of A Sailor", "Boys Fall In Love", and "Believe In Me".

The MoWest subsidiary lasted just a few years, and gets overlooked in the canonization of Motown at it's most classic and revolutionary – but the legacy is pretty incredible. Funk, sunshine rock and soul fused adventurously by a stunningly diverse roster – late period Frankie Vallie & The Four Seasons (who's comp-opening track is a slept on sunshine pop-soul classic), breezy-jazzy-soul from Odyssey, the sister funk of Sisters Love, a stunning solo left turn from Spinners singer GC Cameron and more great stuff from Syreeta, The Commodores, Suzee Ikeda, Thelma Houston and others. Massive mixes from the mighty Tom Moulton – a huge package that not only includes some classic lost and rare mixes from the 70s, but also previously unreleased Moulton mixes, appearing here for the first time ever! If there's anyone who's ever been well-suited to reworking a Philly groove, it's Tom – given his long standing association with the soul scene in the City Of Brotherly Love – and his crucial role in pushing soul tracks into the clubs during the 70s. This series keeps on getting better and better – and this fourth installment may well be the best illustration to date of the birth of soul music! As hinted by the title, the collection features tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that marked a key transition from earlier R&B and blues into soul music – work that pulled a bit more strongly from the church than some of its predecessors, and which also put over a groove that was a bit more sophisticated, sometimes a bit more polished – all to set the stage for the huge soul music explosion to come later in the 60s!
