The third album from the mighty Chase – proof that the group was still going strong several years after their groundbreaking debut! The grooves here are almost tighter than before – a bit more complicated instrumentally, with some of the trumpets backed off a bit, to leave more room for great lines on guitar and keyboards – really stretching out over the propulsive groove of the rhythms. There's still some vocals on the record, but they seem a bit more on the backburner than on the group's earliest efforts – and titles include "Close Up Tight", "Twinkles", "Weird Song #1", "Run Back To Mama", and "Bochawa".

A killer – and one of the greatest records ever cut on Bethlehem! Charlie Rouse and Paul Quinichette go head to head in a hard-blown session that's very different than most of the work on Bethlehem – grooving in a free-wheeling "chase" mode, as you might guess from the title – with lots of heavy tenor in the lead, cooking at a level that's more like a Prestige or Savoy session from the 50s! The group's as tight as can be – with some killer drum work from Ed Thigpen, and piano by either Wynton Kelly or Hank Jones. Titles include "The Chase Is On", "You're Cheating Yourself", "Knittin", "Tender Trap", and "When The Blues Come On".

A wicked wailer from Lincoln Chase – and a tune that begins with a really amazing intro! "I Love" has this very low-end, slow-moving baritone sax honking along at a gentle clip – mixed with some echoey production that then leaps into a skittish percussive groove topped with Lincoln's mad mad vocals! "Miss Orangatang" is a bit more conventional, but still a blasting bit of R&B – a hard-wailing number that grooves fast right from the get-go!

A brilliant funky soundtrack – with great work from a number of different artists! The Buddah soul stable came out in full force for this soundtrack, including Harvy Fuqua, The New Birth, Barbara Mason, and Horace Ott – as well as the little known group Badder Than Evil! They play on the great instrumental track "Hot Wheels", which is the chase theme in the film, and a great sample track! Also includes "Super Shine #9", sung by Sister Goose & the Ducklings, which is a very groovy, goofy, soulful number – plus the tracks "Child Of Tomorrow", "Harlem Dreams", "Child Of Tomorrow", and "Come On & Dream Some Paradise".

The soundtrack that put John Barry over the top – and to many, THE James Bond soundtrack! The album chills from the first notes of the haunting title theme – the majestic "Goldfinger", sung by Shirley Bassey with a tone that's as dangerous as a razor-sharp hat spinning through the air! Barry then takes over with some wonderful instrumentals – a blend of crime jazz, mood pieces, chase themes, and more – all peppered with that dark dark Bond theme that we love so much! Titles include "Into Miami", "Teasing The Korean", "Alpine Drive", "Bond Back In Action", "Gassing The Gangsters", and "Death Of Goldfinger".

An odd little soundtrack of 50s-sounding tunes! The film, in case you don't know it, was an early low budget JD film – set in Brooklyn at the end of the 50s, with Sylvester Stallone in the lead. The budget appears to have been so low that they couldn't afford to pay for using the big hits of the day, so the director had Joe Brooks come up with a bunch of oldies-sounding tunes with kind of a Sha-Na-Na sound to them. Artists performing the music include Jamie Carr, Bill Dean, George Marge, and Charles Brown – and titles include "The Chase", "The Wedding Song", "Gypsy Woman", "A Very Fine Day", "You & Me", and "Rock & Roll Music".

Damn, is this a great record! The album's not only one of the best blacksploitation soundtracks ever recorded, it's also one of James Brown's funkiest outings of the early 70s! Nearly every cut's a winner, and James gets some very funky help from The JBs, who groove hard on the best instrumental cuts, plus Lyn Collins, who sings a sock version of "Mama Feelgood" that's worth the price of the record alone! Includes the classic "Down & Out in New York City", plus "Blind Man Can See It", "Sportin' Life", "The Boss", "Dirty Harri", and "Chase".The original on wax, with the split middle gatefold cover! One of James' best records from the 70's, and includes the cuts "Sportin' Life", "The Boss", "Down & Out in New York City", "Blind Man Can See It", and lots more good grooves. This is the original pressing – with a split die-cut gatefold cover in the middle!

One of the last albums ever from the legendary Oscar Brown Jr – a set that features the famous vocalist working with daughter Maggie Brown – in a setting that's one of the most jazz-based that Oscar's used in years! Backing us by a hip small combo – and Oscar brings a hell of a lot of personality to the tunes – those soulful inflections we've always loved in his lyrics, augmented by some spoken bits from time to time – and matched with a very deep, spiritual jazz approach from Maggie! The set's a great one – filled with great memories from Brown's many years in music – and many numbers feature this really great creative interplay, as other singers come into the group with the spirit of instrumental voices in a small combo. Titles include "Bird Chase", "Midnight", "All Blues", "Strongman", "Insight", "Young Jazz", "My Little Maggie", and "Brown Baby".

An excellent biker soundtrack – very different than the usual bag! For this one, Tony Bruno has come up with some great instrumentals – many of them jazzier than you'd think, and a few with some nice funky Capitol instrumental touches – not so much studio fuzz guitar, as they are groovy numbers that are a lot less hairy than the guys on screen in the movie! The change is a nice one – not as rockish as the regular biker soundtrack – although there are some vocal numbers too, done in the Tower/Sidewalk sort of style. Yet it's the instrumentals that really send us – and which make this album well worth seeking out! Titles include "Chase Of Death", "Goofin", "Bass Lake Run", "Hang On Tight", and "Al and Alice".

Sweet British harmony soul from this overlooked 70s group – a really wonderful record that continues some of the best mellow group styles of the earlier part of the decade! Dave Collins – of Dave & Ansel Collins fame – is a member of the trio – but the sound here is more in keeping with the best New Jersey group modes than any of his earlier hits – a wonderfully fragile mode that has the voices hanging in air, coming together in sublime late night harmony sounds! A few numbers get slightly more uptempo, but the record's a pretty ballad-heavy one overall – and tracks include "Indebted To You", "Never Lose Never Win", "Why Can't We Be Lovers?", "Think I'll Leave This Song Just Like It Is", "Hogtied", "Chase A Miracle", and "Cold Steel". 2 bonus tracks on this CD version: "This Eternal Flame" from a 1976 single, and the previously unreleased "Make It".

Con Funk Shun really hit a tight groove on this one – late 70s dancefloor funk at its finest – and a turning point for the group that set the scene for 80s grooves to come! The killer group vocals, thumping funk bass and punctuating horn blasts are in full effect, and the group is also starting to work more with synthesizers and electronic sound washes – the spacey touches blending perfectly with their tried-and-true funk. A great batch of tunes, well-produced by the group and Skip Scarborough, and ear-pleasing tunes all the way – sparkling with a great blend of bassy funk and smooth ballads! Tracks include "Fire When Ready", "Chase Me", "Not Ready", "Da Lady", "Candy" and "(Let Me Put) Love On Your Mind", "Main Slice" and "Images".

Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – a pair of late 70s albums – together in a single set! Loveshine finds the group working under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make more out of doing less – and which have a sense of space and timing that's totally impeccable. There's a few light jazzy touches at times too – bits of flute, sax, and organ that bring in a nice sense of depth, and which takes it far past easily classified funk! Titles include "So Easy", "Shake & Dance With Me", "When The Feelings Right", "I Think I Found The Answer", "Wanna Be There", "Can't Go Away", "So Easy", and "Magic Woman". One of those great examples of a wildly successful songwriter recording a terrific album of his own, but not connecting with the pop consciousness – which is shame, because Roger James Cooke's Study is, well, a study in wonderful late 60s songcraft! Cook was actually no stranger to performing, having scored a hit with Roger Greenaway as David & Jonathan – but this solid Columbia album really deserves a bigger audience. Titles include "Primrose Jill", "Black Paper Roses", "Teresa", "Something", "Ellie", "Today I Killed A Man I Didn't Know", "My Home City", "Stop" and more. This great CD version from RPM has 11 bonus tracks: late 60s and early 70s singles and B-Sides including "I'm Burning", "Paper Chase", "Someday", "Anticipation Grow", "People I've Gotta Dream" and more.

A groovy take on the Zorro sound of yore – put together by Guido and Maurizio De Angelis for a hip 70s version of the character! The style here mixes some older Italian western modes with touches of "Mexican" instrumentation to set the scene – but there's also a brighter approach to production that definitely lets you hear some of the 70s elements in the music, too. The leadoff cut "Zorro Is Back" is a very groovy number with vocals in English by The Silver Onions – and other titles include "Huerta's Chase", "Ortensia's Capture", "The Governor's Son", "To You Mi Chica", and "Zorro & The Governor".

Kentaro is a sharp producer/artist on top of the turntablist skills, crafting well-paced full scale listening experiences – and he's wise enough to stay true to his inspirations rather than chase trends. A brilliant 70s session from UK reedman Bob Downes – one of his most compelling records ever, even if it wasn't widely issued at the time! The set's based on Downes' impressions of New York in the 70s – and it's got a really expansive vibe – surprising undercurrents of funk on some numbers, lyrical lines on others, and even some darker aspects that really show Bob trying to push the unique approach he first formed with his Open Music recordings at the start of the decade! Instrumentation is relatively spare throughout – with Bob on a variety of flutes, tenor, and alto sax – and also vocalizing a bit in these really compelling ways – in a group with Paul Rutherford on trombone and effects, Brian Godding on guitar, Paul Bridge on bass, and Denis Smith on drums. Production is nice and raw – very different than some of the over-recorded sessions from the scene at the time – and titles include "The Chase", "Harlem Blues", "Times Square", "Coke", "Skywalkers", and "39th Street".

A nice little funky fusion set by Dreams – who were basically the Brecker Brothers, before they stepped out on their own and started calling themselves by that name! The fusion super group actually hews a little closer to the rock side of the fusion game at times, but there's no shortage of jazzy chord structures and some nice riffing and soloing going one – not unlike Chase or some of the other groups that were grooving in a similar jazz rock vein at the time! Billy Cobham joins the Breckers on the set – and titles include "Devil Lady", "15 Miles To Provo", 'The Maryanne", "Holli Be Home", "try Me", "Dream Suite" and "New York".

2 of our favorite action soundtracks from French maestro Georges Garvarentz – the funky mid 70s Killer Force and the groovy late 60s Corrupt One – in one fantastic set! Killer Force is up first – and it's filled with strident grooves that are right up there with some of the best mid 70s cop/thriller soundtracks! We've never seen the film – which starred O.J. Simpson, Peter Fonda, and Telly Savalas – but with a cast like that, you can guess what the sound is like. You probably know George's work from some of the compilations we've stocked – and this soundtrack's right in keeping with the work on those sets. Tracks include "The Chase", "A Diamond Love", "Forget That Time", "Love Theme", and "Diamond Robbery". The Corrupt Ones is another pulpy gem – featuring a totally cool theme song by Dusty Springfield, with a great mix of funk, easy, and soul! The instrumental tracks range from orchestral/dramatic, to more of a crime jazz style – with some John Barry-like touches, and other more serious numbers. Titles include "Torture Room", "The Gambling Den", "The Bar", "Treasure Cave", "Illusion & Escape", "Man Hunt", "Jasmine's Dance", "The Mortuary", and "Suspense In The Sun". Includes 3 bonus tracks: "Riksha Ride", "Casino Fight" and "Finale".

Willie's got a real Curtis Mayfield sound here – with a dope mixture of full orchestrations and heavy funk, guitar riffing away as drums snap tightly across the album's best rhythms! Includes the classic funky numbers "Ain't That Mellow Mellow" and "Give Me Some of that Good Old Love" – plus "Whatever You Do", "Foxy Lady", "You Sure Know How To Love Your Man", "Theme Of Foxy Brown", "Out There", and "Chase".

A strange little record – one that features a few tracks by Lawrence from Lord Of The Flies, The Great Chase, and David & Lisa – mixed with others from films that include To Kill A Mockingbird, Rat Race, Mutiny On The Bounty, and other films. Most of the material is pretty orchestral – and titles include "Lord Of The Flies", "Way Down East", and "Theme From David & Lisa" by Elliot Lawrence; "Rat Race", "A Girl Named Tamiko", "Two Weeks In Another Town", and "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Bernstein; "Cleopatra's Barge" by John Neel; and "Love Theme From Period Of Adjustment", "Our Language Of Love", and "Love Song From Mutiny On the Bounty" by Harry Betts.

The music on the set is really great – sparer than usual for a blacksploitation soundtrack, with lots of nice instrumental tracks that riff on guitars and keys – and a few totally excellent laidback cuts that are a perfect example of slow funk at its best! The album also features some slight snippets of dialogue from the film, interspersed with the musical tracks, in a mode that really recalls the feel of the film. The style here is blacksploitation funk at its finest – stripped down to its best core elements, and served up by Lee with a lean, mean groove that shows that he really understands the roots of the genre – and knows how to get the sound just right – while still bringing in some of his own core touches too! As we've come to expect from Shawn, the beats are mighty nice – and the album's overflowing with breaks – plenty of funk to drive along the album's heavy keyboards and guitar riffs in the lead. 70s soundtrack work from the mighty Michel Legrand – his score for the famous Three Musketeers film directed by Richard Lester, and unissued music for the film Robin & Marian! The Musketeers music is quite dramatic – often filled with action, but with a few tender spots as well – and although somewhat more conventional in terms of scoring, there's still some of those sweeter Legrand touches we love so much – especially in some of the orchestral moments that echo his energy from Peau D'Ane. As you might guess from the story, there's a few period themes at points – although not as many as you might expect – and this balance continues in the Robin & Marian soundtrack from 1976, in music that would mostly be right at home in any other 70s film as well. CD features 24 tracks in all, with notes in French and English – and titles that include "Bustling Buckingham", "He Ain't Heavy He's The Cardinal", "Four Abreast", "Sword For Your Supper", "To Love A Queen", "Back From The Crusades", "Reunion", "The Attack", "The Chase Fugue", and "An Unforgotten Love".

The last album ever issued by the enigmatic studio collective Mandigo – a batch of British musicians, but recording here in the best Afro Rock mode of the 70s sound library scene! As with some of the best British projects of this nature, there's a lot of different elements at play in the mix – African percussion, American funk, and some fuller arrangements that really push the whole thing over the top – in ways that make the whole record come across like a batch of all the best chase and crime soundtrack cuts from hip action films of the time! And like the other Mandingo records, there's also some cool use of electronics too – a bit less than before, but still with some great elements that really help create a unique sound. The whole thing grooves nicely, and standout cuts include "Man From Takoradi", "Rebellion", "Jungle Juice", "Arachnid", and "Manhunter".

Howard McGhee and his trumpet team up with pianist Phineas Newborn, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and Shelley Manne on drums for this great early 60s session. The record features the McGhee original "Demon Chase" and two Teddy Edwards songs, "Sunset Eyes" and his salute to McGhee "Maggie's Back in Town." McGhee himself pays tribute to one of his favorite trumpet players, Clifford Brown by doing Brown's "Brownie Speaks." Other titles include "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," "Willow Weep for Me" and "Summertime."

An amazing score to an overlooked Mr Tibbs film – Gil Melle's mighty music for The Organization, a soundtrack that we might like even better than some of Quincy Jones' funk for Sidney Poitier! Melle got his start in modern jazz during the 50s, but by the time of this 1971 movie, he was a hell of a talent for scoring a crime/cop narrative – often willing to take a lot of weird chances with sounds and styles that nobody else might use – eerie elements that are still mixed in with just the right touches of funk and jazz to keep a mainstream ear on the course – a beautiful balance that takes this soundtrack way past any easy cliches of the time! Reedwork is especially wonderful, but there's a great way of recording the keyboards that's totally sweet too – almost a Schifrin-like quality, but a bit more complex. Titles include "Mr Tibbs", "Night Danger", "Annie Lost", "The Whole World", "Virgil's Theme", "Subway Chase", and "The Organization".

Landmark British metal from Motörhead– inarguably one of the greatest albums ever in the genre! If there's a flaw to Ace Of Spades, it's that Lemmy & Co.'s signature song – the title track, of course – is so damned amazing, you want to drop the needle on it 10 times in a row everytime you pull the record out of the sleeve before going on to the rest of the record. If only more rock & roll albums had this "problem". Other tracks include "The Chase Is Better Than The Catch", "Love Me Like A Reptile", "Shoot You In The Back", "Fast And Loose", "Fire, Fire", "Jailbait", "Bite The Bullet", "The Hammer", "Dance", "Live To Win" and more.

A great collection of work by Fats Navarro – his complete Blue Note recordings, and a masterful collection of trumpet-based bop! There's are a total of 26 songs on this 2 LP set and several groups that Navarro played with are represented – The Tadd Dameron Sextet & Septet, The McGhee/Navarro Boptet and Bud Powell's Modernists. Other members of these groups included Charlie Rouse, Wardell Gray, Kenny Clarke, Milt Jackson and many more. Titles include "Our Delight", "The Chase", "Dameronia", "Lady Bird", "Double Talk", "The Skunk", "Dance Of The Infidels", and "Wail".

Monty Norman handles the music – and brings together some cool Caribbean sounds with familiar jazz riffs – a blend that showcases the Jamaican setting of the main narrative, but also paves the way for lots of spy jazz to come! A funky treasure – finally unleashed! Bucktown was one of the best of the mid 70s indie blacksploitation films – thanks to some great starring work from Fred Williamson and Pam Grier – but for years, the soundtrack's never been available as an individual release. Now, this tasty heavy-vinyl set makes all the film's wonderful grooves finally available – presented in a great style that includes all the shorter moodier bits, the fuller longer funky tracks, and even a bit of sound effects and dialogue! The music was penned and conducted by Johnny Pate – of Shaft In Africa and Brother On The Run fame – and the tunes are a great blend of funky soundtrack styles that include full on big band, sparer snapping instrumentals, and even a few nice tunes with great use of moog! Titles include "Chase", "Stepping", "Bar Fly", "Check In", "Freeze", "Love Theme", "Call It In", "Sneaking It In", and "Spin".

An incredible funky soundtrack – one of the best of the blacksploitation generation, and one of the rarest too! Johnny Pate did the orchestrations for this excellent lost film, and he brought the same sort of energy to it that he did with his soundtrack for Shaft In Africa. There's some masterfully funky tracks that are very tightly arranged – grooving hard with some nice "chase" themes, and slowing down in a few sexier, more soulful numbers. Adam Wade sang the vocals to "Brother On The Run" – perhaps the catchiest of all soundtrack tunes from the time – and other titles include "Brother", "Auto Chase", "Car Bumps", "Soulful Brother On The Run", and "Ms. Johnson's Sex Scene".

Jerry Lewis as a boy geisha? Sounds like a pretty wild movie – but the soundtrack is a bit more straightforward than you might expect – a great mix of rich Hollywood scoring with some very nice "exotic" touches thrown in for good measure – a surprisingly top-shelf effort from maestro Walter Scharf! As with some of Jerry's films of the time, there's a strong sense of sentiment to the music – to offset some of the more comedic moments on the screen – and Scharf's music is surprisingly tender at points, with a quality that can echo the youthful innocence that Lewis brings to his portrayal. CD version has a huge amount of bonus tracks – 22 numbers in all, with titles that include "Tokyo Street Theme", "Dinner On The Floor", "The Steam Baths", "Harry Returns", "The Chase", "A Parting Kiss", and "Touring Japan".

A pretty darn rare Lalo Schifrin soundtrack – to a lost crime thriller that starred David McCallum, Stella Stevens, and Telly Savalas – all of whom are pictured in a nice collage-type movie painting on the front cover! The tracks run from mellow bossa to fast and jazzy, and the album also includes a few mellower Latin-tinged numbers to set the scene of the action. There's not as much funk as in Schifrin's other scores from the time – but it makes up for it with groovy passages and many great moments that make the album worth seeking out! Titles include "Charanga", "The Golden Trip", "Sol Madrid", "Fiesta", "Adagietto", and "Villanova's Chase".

One of the few albums as a leader cut by pianist Ralph Sharon – a player who's best known for his years supporting singer Tony Bennett, but who sounds really wonderful here in an instrumental setting too! Sharon's got a way of coming up both with a punch and a fluid sort of groove – that gentle swing that worked so well to ignite the jazzier side of Bennett's vocals – and which gets lots of room to open up with a voice of its own here! The rest of the trio nicely match Sharon's liveliness on the keys – with work from Jay Cave on bass and Christy Febbo on drums – and although most titles are standards, they're handled with a fresh approach that makes us wish we could hear more from Sharon in such a setting. Titles include "Steeple Chase", "Angel Eyes", "Bluz For Suz", "I'm Glad There Is You", and "Give Me The Simple Life".

Probably the best record the Staple Singers ever cut during the 70s – as it makes a genius move by taking their rich vocal style and laying it over some excellent tracks written by Curtis Mayfield! The record's quite different than their usual Stax numbers, and has a Curtom groove that's hip and funky in the best parts – arranged by Gil Askey and Rich Tufo in the same manner as Curtis' work from the time. Includes the hit title cut "Let's Do It Again", plus other nice ones like "After Sex", "Chase", "Big Mac", and "Funky Love".

An excellent blacksploitation soundtrack – and every bit as funky as any of Willie Hutch's work for other Motown soundtracks at the time! Larry Mizell and Dennis Coffey help out on the instrumentation – giving the album an extra funky instrumental edge, one that takes it way past Edwin Starr's other work – and the tracks are a nice mix of vocals and instrumentals. Titles include "Ain't It Hell Up In Harlem", "Airport Chase", and the massive "Easin' In", a stone sample classic!

A pretty darn psych/groovy soundtrack – to what looks like a very strange film! The music is by Ken Thorne – and the tracks are a mix of mod rhythms, instrumental groovers, and some very trippy numbers that use echoey percussion and some electrified instrumentation. A few cuts have vocals – such as "Respect" by The Ferris Wheel and "Touchables Theme", sung by Nirvana, in a style that's almost in the Bob Crewe mode – but the best cuts are the instrumentals, which are really really fantastic. A few cuts have organ by Wynder K Frog – and titles include "Samson's Theme", "The Dome", "Sadie's Theme", "Christian & Melanie", "Blues For A Frog", and "The Chase".

A masterpiece from prime era Tribe Called Quest! Midnight Maurauders was Tribe's third LP, and even though there were no tracks yet credited to the Ummah, this is pretty much the beginning of Tribe's transition to that sound – with the same mellow, laid back vibe as their best early material, but less of an overtly jazzy reference in their sound. Phife and Tip are still on point lyrically, and honestly, this is pretty much the last LP that Tribe dropped that's got nearly all hits and no misses on it. With the cuts "Award Tour", "Midnight", "Electric Relaxation", "Clap Your Hands", "Oh My God", "The Chase, Part II", and "Keep It Rollin".

The rare soundtrack for the second movie starring a very young Brigitte Bardot – with moods that range from whimsical movie symphony to sultry, percussion heavy exoticism! The 1952 vehicle for Bardot pegged her to portray the alluring daughter of a light house keeper, and it's pretty sweet how this nice little score brings visions of the beauty to mind! The best parts are the sultrier turns, ratcheting up the drums and off kilter strings for a smoky vibe that sounds a decade ahead of it's time! A seminal soundtrack from the legendary John Carpenter – one of those key records that showed the world that he was as great of a composer as he was a director! The album's a Carpenter-esque masterpiece – lots of cool, spare electronics – used in ways that make the whole movie a whole lot scarier than even the images on the screen – a quality you'll definitely appreciate here as you listen to the album on its own! Some of the best sounds are the most subtle – spare use of basslines and keyboards that almost make you feel as if Moebius and Rodelius have gone over to the dark side – and these are mixed with just a few more "action" based moments. Sweet British harmony soul from this overlooked 70s group – a really wonderful record that continues some of the best mellow group styles of the earlier part of the decade! Dave Collins – of Dave & Ansel Collins fame – is a member of the trio – but the sound here is more in keeping with the best New Jersey group modes than any of his earlier hits – a wonderfully fragile mode that has the voices hanging in air, coming together in sublime late night harmony sounds! A few numbers get slightly more uptempo, but the record's a pretty ballad-heavy one overall – and tracks include "Indebted To You", "Never Lose Never Win", "Why Can't We Be Lovers?", "Think I'll Leave This Song Just Like It Is", "Hogtied", "Chase A Miracle", and "Cold Steel".

John Barry – eat your hat! The Man From Interpol is one of the best spy soundtracks we've ever heard – and one of the only scores we've ever seen from Brit jazz drummer Tony Crombie! The work was done a few years before Barry's famous Bond scores – but it's got a very similar feel, with lots of driving themes that make the best use of brazen horns, fast jazz, and beat-styled rhythms that crackle throughout the set. Most titles are pretty short, but really great – and nearly all of them feature some extremely strong jazz musicianship, in the manner of that used on the best American soundtracks by Mancini at the time! Titles include "Panic Station", "Interpol Cha Cha Cha", "Interpol Chase", "Samba De Janeiro", and "Blues Macabre".

An amazing little soundtrack from James William Guercio – music composed for his only cinematic effort as a director – for a film that features Robert Blake as a Native American cop! The score is heavy on jazzy horns with an undercurrent of funk – very similar to Guercio's best modes working with the group Chicago in the early days, and his productions for Blood Sweat & Tears! The depth of the music is quite a surprise – as we never new that James had this ability on his own – and it's recorded with that crystal clear quality that made him a revolutionary talent in the studio, too. Some numbers have a tight cop show sort of funk, while others have an expansive sound that's a nice contrast – and in addition to instrumental tunes "Free From The Devil", "The Chase", "Prelude", "Monument Valley", "Overture", and "Jolene's Dance" – the set also features "Most Of All" by The Marcels, "Meadow Mountain Top" by Mark Spoelstra, and "Tell Me" by Terry Keith of Chicago.

An amazing double-header – and a set that really adds a lot more music than we might have expected! The title cut features Joe Simon on vocals, and Millie Jackson sings on the cuts "Love Doctor" and "It Hurts So Good". The rest of the set is instrumental, and other cuts include an instrumental take on "Cleopatra Jones", plus "Go Chase Cleo", "Goin To The Chase", "Wrap Up", and "Airport Fight". This new version features 17 bonus tracks from the original film score, not the record – amazing extra music by Carl Brandt, with titles that include "Emdee", "Elevator/Cleo & Captain", "Pot Burn/Mommy/Police Raid", "Ambush", "Doodle Apartment", "Before Crash", and "Snake Crib". CD 2 features some long-lost music from the film Cleopatra Jones & The Casino Of Gold – a well-known follow-up to the original movie, but one that was never properly represented on record – making this CD set a long-awaited premiere of the original music for the film! The set features music by Dominic Frontiere – penned in a mix of funky action modes, with some slight exotic touches too, due to the location of the story. Frontiere's in his best soul/funk mode – a side that few folks realize he can do this well – and the music has a slightly different feel than JJ Johnson's Cleo Jones work, but is equally nice. Titles include "Casino Source", "Chopped Meat", "Oymia", "Les Orgie", "Fatman Stomp", "Dead Dragon Lady", and "Pool Hall Rock" – plus the vocal number "Playing With Fire". CD also features 4 more bonus tracks from Cleopatra Jones – including extended versions of the theme, and Pattie Brooks singing "Swing Down Chariot" and "Am I Blue". Great notes too – very full, with lots of photos, in the best Film Score tradition!

The album's got a non-stop, hard-hitting groove that ranks it with the best of its time – and which is arguably even better, because most of the record isn't nearly as well known as Shaft, Superfly, or other classics. Martha Reeves sings some of the deepest vocals of her career on the great title track "Willie D" – an old sample cut that you're sure to recognize – and the instrumental tunes are even better, filled with great percussion and jazzy flourishes from JJ – in a style that really keeps things interesting! This one's got a bluesy jazz approach – set by Ray Charles' version of the title theme, and followed through by Lalo's great instrumental tracks – which mix strings, soul, and just the right jazzy touches to keep things moving along with a subtle groove. Soul Jazz takes an open-eyed and open-minded look at swampy, funky, freewheeling southern rock – southern-by-nature or southern-by-inspiration grooves from the end of the 60s and well into the 70s! What we love most about the set, besides that it features one great song after another, is the Soul Jazz perspective. They don't simply put together Delta Swamp Rock from a purist's standpoint regionally, or as a sound – it's loosely-defined, which you could complain about if you want, but we love all of this stuff so it works for us! There's early phase southern rock, blue-eyed soul, soulful country and homey, swaggering pop. Volume 1 of the vinyl has 13 tracks on 2LPs: "The Seasons" by Lynryd Skynryd, "Smokies" by Barefoot Jerry", "Papa, Won't You Let Me Go To Town With You" by Bobbie Gentrie, "Stone Fox Chase" by Area Code 615, "Be What You Want To" by Link Wray", "I'll Be Long Gone" by Boz Scaggs, "God Rest His Soul" by Duane And Gregg Allman and more.

Two lost scores – packaged together on a single CD! First up is Billion Dollar Brain, composed by Richard Rodney Bennett – done for an obscure late 60s spy thriller starring Michael Caine, and a really dark soundtrack! Bennett did a fair bit of jazz arranging in his time – and the score to this one mixes some dark dramatic bits with some lighter motifs that feature good work on woodwinds and percussion. The main theme has some nice floating piano over the top, and a few other tracks have a cool whistling suspense theme – but things also really change up a lot nicely, and the whole thing almost has an audio collage feel at times, with its sense of variety. Titles include "Love Scene", "Hoe Down", "Anya", "The Church", "Skidoo", "Ambush", "Car Chase", and "Billion Dollar Brain". Roy Budd handles the score for Final Option – an early 80s spy thriller, but one that gets some beautiful Budd treatment that's right up there with Roy's famous soundtracks of the 70s! The instrumentation often has an airy, eerie feel – slowly cascading keyboards, with almost a hint of Italian space between – used with a lot less schlock than some of the tinnier, cheesier action scores that were more of the mainstream at the time. A few tunes were composed and conducted by Jerry & Marc Donahue – and titles include "Who Dares Wins", "Straight Ahead Blues", "Nature Of The Beast", "Reds Under The Beds", "Hi Jack (part 1)", "American Medley", and "SAS Or Nothing".

One of the funkiest blacksploitation soundtracks of the 70s – a rare indie gem from Nat Dove & The Devils! Dove's got a style that's a lot rougher and rootsier than other soundtrack artists of the 70s – an approach that's more based in the modes of the indie funk underground of the time, and less in the more polished studio funk you'd find on bigger film releases. The grit in the grooves is wonderfully welcome here – and it's a quality that really sets this one apart from the pack, and keeps it in heavy rotation over the years! Most of the tracks on here are instrumentals, and a few of the cuts have vocals by Mary Love – and titles include "Joy", "Petey Wheatstraw", "Steve's Den", Junkie Chase", "Zombie March", "Ghetto Street USA", and "Loving You".

Wonderful lost work from Michel Legrand – a fantastic, and fantastically overlooked, 70s soundtrack – completely essential to have in a CD version like this, since most of the music hardly appeared in the film at all! The score takes off nicely from some of Legrand's more famous work of the 60s and early 70s – with a mixture of warm themes, jazzy elements, and some of the funkier touches you'd expect from a cop/crime film – all at a level that's a bit less sentimental than some of his French film work, with just the right qualities to fit the offbeat story of the movie. There's a real Dave Grusin sort of approach going on at times – although with a bit more acoustic piano than electric keyboards – but Legrand also throws in a few softer bits to round things out nicely, and create a lot more depth in the music than you might expect for a low-budget film. Really great stuff overall – the kind of soundtrack that should have gotten proper release at the time, as it easily matches any of Legrand's bigger LP hits – and presented with great notes on both the film and music. Titles include "Papa Joe The Padrone", "Downtown", "Wall Street", "The Chase", "The Sleep Song", "The Sellers", and "Uptown".

Ennio Morricone's beautiful score to one of the beautifully shot films of the 70s, or all time, really – Terrence Malick's legendary Days Of Heaven – the original 1978 soundtrack album and Morricone's cues programmed separately on one disc plus a bonus disc of extended score material and more bonus tracks! It's gorgeous stuff, from Morricone's haunting "Main Theme" and his more classically enthralling sounds, as well as the rootsy folk guitar by Leo Kottke and and equally swampy fiddle dance number by Doug Kershaw. It's all newly remastered on this great 2CD set from Film Score Classics. Heavy dubs from a fairly unsung producer Phil Pratt – a set recorded at Channel One at the end of the 70s/start of the 80s –backed by the mighty rhythms of Sly & Robbie and other key figures in some of the greatest Jamaican music! This is some of the most adventurous dub we can think of from that time, yet it doesn't go too far off the experimental deep end – with acres of infectious echo and some tripped out atmosherics. Ron Brian is on guitar, Bobby Kalphat & Ansel Collins on keys, Tommy McCook & Herman Marquis on horns. Includes "Dial-M-For Murder", "Danger UBX", "Stinger", "Beware Of This Rass Dub", "Chase A Crooked Shadow", "Don't Watch My Size", "Walking Razor", "Wonder Woman Dub", "Bad Boy Dub" and "Jam Up".

A different side of the Skull Snaps than their funky break classic – but a killer groove nonetheless! "My Hang Up" is tight, right, and outta sight – a tune that moves along at a plenty great clip – yet still manages to have this great blacksploitation feel too – thanks in part to the group's righteous mix of lead vocals and harmonies! "I'm Your Pimp" continues that vibe – funky orchestrations that almost feel like a "chase" theme from an action film – but handled in these stop/start ways that work great for the badass lyrics!

A great soundtrack for a pretty darn obscure film – the third appearance of Inspector Clouseau, filmed after A Shot In The Dark and The Pink Panther, but featuring Alan Arkin in the title role, instead of Peter Sellers! The score is by Ken Thorne, and is quite different from more familiar Mancini moments from Panther films – a bit more whimsical overall, with a nice range of off-kilter instrumentation! Some tunes are groovy, others have an exotic flair – and overall, the soundtrack's a wonderfully strong effort – every bit as great as Ken Thorne's other few classics from the 60s. Titles include "Why Don't You Go" – a Brit Invasion-styled vocal track – plus "Bossa Nova", "Car Chase", "Fitting The Mask", "Don't Go", "March", "Lindt Vans", and "Water Ballet & End Titles".

A great idea for a compilation – a really cool set that focuses on the best days when jazz and rock were really combined together – that stretch in the late 60s and early 70s when horns were equally blended with guitars, in a groove that was plenty powerful overall! A mix of dramatic moments and slight exotic themes from Franz Waxman – penned for an early 60s film that starred Yul Brynner as Taras Bulba and Tony Curtis as his son! Waxman's music has a gloriously full sort of sound – every bit the best Hollywood mode for an action epic like this – with enough ancient themes to trump some of the similar efforts coming out of the European film scene at the time. Instrumentation is heavy on strings and woodwinds, often arranged with great complexity amidst the drama – and titles include "The Black Plague", "Tara's Pledge", "No Retreat", "Leaving Home", "Chase At Night", "The Sleigh Ride", "The Birth Of Andrei", and "The Ride To Dubno".

A great 80s date – with Bartz on alto, Butch Lacy on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – a really great rhythm trio who help Gary soar on tunes that include "Samuel", "Never Never Land", "Monsoon", and "Uncle Bubba".

Although we've been fans of Andy Bey for years (ever since his early 60s recordings with Andy & The Bey Sisters), we've got to admit that we're stunned at how successful his recent revival has been! This CD is probably the main reason for Andy's success – as it's a compelling batch of jazz vocal tracks that show Andy reinventing himself for a whole new generation of jazz listeners. The backing's by a nice small group that includes Gary Bartz, with whom Andy recorded extensively in the 70s – and the album includes a haunting reworking of Nick Drake's amazing song "River Man", plus a version of Dori Caymmi's "Like A Lover", Monk's "Straight No Chaser", and the moody "Dark Shadows", which was a page from Earl Coleman's songbook.

Modern classics from Bongo-Logic – a group with a great flair for mixing the new and the old! There's plenty of jazz in this set – thanks to work from Art Webb on flute – but there's also a charanga groove going on too – with violin dancing strongly around the piano lines from Joe Rotundi – arranged with lots of fresh touches throughout. Jazz elements share the space equally with charanga styles – especially on the two Monk numbers "Straight No Chaser" and "Round Midnight" – and the production style is right on the money for the music. A Christmas jazz album – even though you might not guess it from the title and cover – and one that really takes a fresh approach to a wide range of Holiday classics! Guitarist Craig Brann isn't content to simply rehash old melodies – and instead really steps out with creative jazz reworkings of these classic tunes – re-arranging almost all of them with a fresh sense of rhythms, and some angular energy that makes them all a lot more striking than most familiar versions! Tunes are short, but get in plenty of creative changes – and in addition to Brann's guitar, the set also features tenor and alto from Gregory Tardy, piano from Joel Weiskopf, and alto from Nicholas Kozak. Maybe the most openly creative Christmas jazz album since God Rest Ye Merry Jazzmen – with titles that include "We Three Kings", "Angels We Have Heard On High", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Hark The Herald", "Little Drummer Boy", and "Joy To The World".

The songs of Freddie Redd – re-arranged wonderfully by tenorist Chris Byars – and played by an octet who really make some new magic with the music! Redd's one of our favorite talents from the late 50s/early 60s scene – a budding modernist who also never failed to swing – a quality that Byars clearly admires too, and shows strongly in the way he opens up and grooves these great tunes! Even the larger lineup of trumpet, trombone, alto, and baritone can't hold things back – and instead, give the tunes more punch than we remember – strong leads that explode into tight solos – driven on nicely by the comping piano work of Sacha Perry. Titles include "The Thespian", "Old Spice", "Emily Reno","Just A Ballad For My Baby", "Minor Interlude", and "Somewhere/Music Forever".

Sublime trio work from pianist Stanley Cowell – a player who's held us rapt with attention for decades – and continues to earn our faith with great records like this! The album features Cowell on piano, and a bit of kalimba – which is mighty nice – working with bassist Tom DiCarlo and drummer Chris Brown – both younger players who really seem to get Cowell's groove, especially in the more complicated moments – of which there are a few. The set begins with two great originals by Stanley – "Cosmology" and "El Space O" – then moves into the great "Asian Art Suite", which is really one of the most unusual, exotic things we've heard from Cowell in years! That music is then offset by the long "Civil Rights Suite" – which has bolder overtones to match its social message – and the set then concludes with two more standalone compositions by Cowell – "Long Vamp" and the classic "Abstrutions".

Ronnie Cuber's an overlooked monster in jazz – a hell of a player, and has been for decades – and one of the last few cats who can really handle a baritone sax! Cuber was late in a legacy of baritonists that included Pepper Adams, Sahib Shihab, Cecil Payne, and Lars Gullin – a youngster when all those players were getting old, but more than able to swing with the lean energy that made the 50s baritone sax players as important as the giants on tenor! Here, Cuber really demonstrates that legacy strongly – picking up the giant horn and handling it with effortless ease – producing these beautifully-blown solo lines that are nice and long, and filled with imagination – in the company of a combo that features Kenny Drew Jr on piano, Ruben Rodriguez on bass, and Ben Perowsky on drums. The recent date is a great reminder that Cuber can still cook heavily – and titles include "Passion Fruit", "Coco B", "Perpetuating The Myth", "Tell Me A Bedtime Story", and "Arroz Con Pollo".

Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid 70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". A triple-trumpet session with a really wonderful sound – the kind of all-star date that only a label like Verve could have done so well! As you'll guess from the title, the record's a showcase for the three trumpeters in the lead – and the tracks are long, with plenty of space for each player to state their case in a very distinct solo voice. Rhythm is by a familiar quartet that features Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums – and the use of guitar in a set like this creates an especially ringing tone at the bottom, one that often seems echoed by the brighter notes of the trumpet over the top. The album's got a great extended "Ballad Medley", plus long takes on "Tour De Force" and "Steeplechase".

2 different slices of work from Tal Farlow! First is the 1955 album Red Norvo With Strings – originally issued under Norvo's name – a "with strings" session with a difference! This one's not the sleepy orchestral jazz set that you'd expect. Instead, it's a cool modernist batch of trio recordings – featuring the vibes of Norvo in front of the guitar of Tal Farlow and the bass of Red Mitchell. We'll be the first to admit that Norvo's made some snoozy recordings, but the stuff on here is pretty darn cool – and has that icy modern sound that we'd compare to the work of the Jimmy Giuffre trio or the Blue Note work of Gil Melle. Titles include "How Am I To Know?", "Who Cares", "I Brung You Finjans For Your Zarf", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". Next is The Return Of Tal Farlow, from 1969 – a great little return to form for Tal Farlow – his first recording in a decade, and a rare Prestige side that features a groovy quartet with John Scully on piano, Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. There's a different vibe here than Tal's work for Verve – a bit more open, but still with that great Farlow tone that was always one of the greatest jazz guitar sounds of the 50s. The tracks include "Straight No Chaser", "Darn That Dream", "Summertime", "Sometime Ago", "I'll Remember April", "My Romance", and "Crazy, She Calls Me". Farlow did not record again until 1976.

There's lots of great guitar/tenor interplay in this live set from Joel Frahm – a date that's recorded with a wonderfully warm feel that almost makes it top any of Frahm's studio sessions! Tracks are nice and long, and really balance a lot of Frahm's snaking tenor lines with the guitar of Kurt Rosenwinkel – in a quartet that also features Otis Brown III on piano, and Joe Martin on bass. The set features many originals by Frahm – including "Alert", "Song For Mom", "A Little Extra", and "Short Rack" – plus versions of "Chelsea Bridge" and "Steeplechase".

Lost genius from Dexter Gordon's initial years in Europe – a set that has him still stretching out in familiar Scandinavian modes, but with a slightly tighter sound too! The group's notable in that it features trumpeter Rolf Ericson – whose horn really adds a lot to the frontline, and has a surprisingly strong talent for matching Gordon's beautifully-blown longform solo modes! Rhythm is from the trio of Lars Sjosten on piano, Sture Nordin on bass, and Per Hulten on drums – and titles include "All The Things You Are", "Darn That Dream", "Straight No Chaser",and "I Remember You".
