new Jackie McLean/Max Roach with JJ Johnson — Tribute To Charlie Parker – From The Newport Jazz Festival – New York Session ... LP
RCA (France), 1967. Near Mint- .... $8.99
A beautiful bit of hardbop that often gets overlooked because of the "leaderless" quality of the session. One batch of tracks on the record has Jackie McLean playing some beautiful rough interpretations of Bird on the standards "Old Folks" and "Embraceable You". The other batch was recorded live at Newport, and features Max Roach leading a sextet with JJ Johnson, Howard McGhee, Sonny Stitt, and Harold Mabern, on "Buzzy", "Now's The Time", and "Wee". The album's worth the price for the playing of Stitt and McLean alone – who both fall into the Parker-ish groove that they were once haunted with, but which here gives them a chance to show how individual they are. Nice stuff, and a record we almost passed by years ago. Don't make the same mistake.
(Early 80s French pressing.)

Charlie ParkerApril In Paris – Charlie Parker With Strings (Genius Of Charlie Parker #2) ... LP
Verve, Early 50s. Very Good .... $5.99
The genius of Bird and strings is hard to describe – an edgey aproach that really goes far past most other "jazz with strings" projects, not a ballad-driven one, but a tensely strained one that brings out some of Parker's best soloing, almost in a moody soundtrack-type way. The tracks are a lot freer and less bop-driven than some of Bird's normal work, and it's incredible to hear him soloing with such complexity – even more proof of the genius he clearly exhibited in relation to his contemporaries. Titles include "Just Friends", "Easy To Love", "East Of The Sun", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "April In Paris", and "Summertime".
(MGM pressing. Cover has some wear, masking tape over the seams and some pen marks on the back. Label has a small sticker.)

Charlie ParkerCharlie Parker Memorial Vol 1 ... LP
Savoy, Late 40s/Early 60s. Good .... $19.99
One of the better of the many posthumous albums that Savoy issued after Bird's death. The set combines master takes and alternates of classic Parker material for the label, and includes pivotal bop tracks like "Parker's Mood", "Constellation", "Ah-Leu-Cha", "Perhaps" and "Another Hair Do".
(Original red label pressing, with deep groove. Vinyl has some light marks, but is clean overall. Cover has some flaking around the edges and light wear, but isn't bad either.)

Charlie ParkerSouth Of The Border (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1951. Used .... $13.99
Believe it or not, this is a crackling batch of Latin jazz tracks, featuring the alto solos of Charlie Parker and (more importantly) the arranging genius of the great Chico O'Farrill. The material was originally issued on a number of different 10" jazz LPs – some under Parker's name, some under Machito's name – and this beautifully packaged CD does an excellent job of bringing all the material together in an excellent way. Parker's sound is amazingly intense, and it's driven to new and different heights by the pounding Latin rhythms of the group. The CD includes the full 17 minute version of O'Farrill's "Afro Cuban Suite", plus the shorter tracks "Un Poquito De Tu Amor", "Estrellita", "Mango Mangue", and "Okiedoke". Great great great stuff, and the kind of "jazz meets Latin" session that blows away any expectations you might have!

Tracks are short, and include some classics – and the album includes alternate takes of 4 numbers. Titles include "Si Si", "Swedish Schnapps", "Back Home Blues", "Lover Man", "Au Privave", "She Rote", and "Star Eyes".

new Charlie ParkerJazz Perennial – Genius Of Charlie Parker #7 ... LP
Verve, 1949. Used .... $1.99 Out Of Stock
One of our favorite of Verve's "genius of" collections of Charlie Parker's work – largely because it includes some wonderful and oft-overlooked vocal tunes! 4 of the tracks on the set feature Bird blowing with a vocal chorus arranged by Dave Lambert – in a style that shouldn't work, but does – thanks to Lambert's keen bop sensibilities (heard here before his Lambert Hendricks & Ross years), and to players in the group that include Hal McKusick, Max Roach, and Charles Mingus. Other tracks have Parker either playing in a quartet with Buddy Rich, Ray Brown, and Hank Jones – or in a different group with Kenny Dorham and Tommy Turk. Titles include "Cardboard", "Visa", "Segment", "Passport", "Diverse", "I'm In the Mood For Love", "If I Love Again", and "Star Eyes".

new Charlie ParkerCharlier Parker Plays Cole Porter – Genius Of Charlie Parker #5 ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1954. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Charlie Parker takes on the music of Cole Porter – with results that make for some of his most classic moments at Verve! Parker's horn is as hard-bitten as always, but it's also working here in a slightly lyrical vibe – one that brings out the warmth that Charlie could have at just the right moments – that sense of soul that made his contribution to jazz one of the more formative sounds of the century! Porter's music takes on tones that we might never have expected – especially in some of the album's alternate versions, which give key proof that Bird was always working out new ideas with each new solo. The group features Walter Bishop on piano, Billy Bauer or Jerome Darr on guitar, Teddy Kotick on bass, and Roy Haynes or Art Taylor on drums – on titles that include "Just One Of Those Things", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Love For Sale", and "I Love Paris.

new Charlie ParkerLe Jazz Cool Vol 1 ... LP
JC, Late 40s/Early 60s. Used .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
Posthumously released live material from rare jam session recordings from the 40s – issued here to cash in on the huge amount of Birdophiles that were cropping up after Parker's early death. The album gives no real notes on personnel or location, except to say that the tracks were recorded in 40s New York. And although the recording quality isn't excellent, Bird's solos do come through with a ferocity that greatly captures his sheer raw power in any setting. Titles include "Hot House", "Cool Blues", "Orinthology", "Groovin High", and "Round Midnight".

new Slide Hampton — Two Sides Of Slide Hampton ... LP
Charlie Parker, 1961. Very Good+ .... $6.99
One of the few truly strong and original jazz LPs on the Charlie Parker label – and one of the best early sides by Slide! Despite a hokey title and cover image, the record really has a lot going on – and shows Slide stretching out as an arranger from his days at Atlantic. Side one features the extended "Cloister" dance suite – a 4 part work composed and arranged by Slide, showing his more expansive approach to jazz, one that he'd realize more strongly in European settings of the 60s and 70s. Players include Willie Thomas, Hobart Dotson, Benjamin Jacobs-El, and George Coleman – and the piece comes off wonderfully, very hip, but still swinging and soulful. Side two features shorter numbers – all Gershwin, like "Summertime", "I Loves You Porgy", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "Bess You Is My Woman".

Barry Miles — Miles Of Genius ... LP
Charlie Parker, 1961. Very Good+ .... $0.99
Early work by Barry Miles – a drummer who would go onto cut some very hip sides in the 70s, and who here was only 14 at the time of the session! The "young genius" approach need not be stated on the cover or the notes, as Miles' drumming is great no matter how old he is – and once you realize that he wrote all the tracks on the set, you'll be even more impressed at his writing skills! The group's a soulfully grooving one that plays a mixture of modern hardbop styles – and which features Duke Jordan on piano, Bob Miller on alto, John Grazel on trumpet, and George Clarke on tenor. The last three aren't well known – but they've all got an easy tone and a good swing, and Jordan's piano gives the whole set the same darkly grooving sound of his best work from the time. Titles include "Tuchentine", "Timetable", "Deez Weet", and "Terry".

Clifford Brown — Clifford Brown With Strings (Trip reissue) ... LP
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good .... $4.99
A classic "with strings" session from Clifford Brown – nearly as well-done and perfect as some of Charlie Parker's sides for Verve, handled here with perhaps a slightly sweeter touch, as Neal Hefti's the man on arrangements. The core group's the Brown/Roach combo, augmented by a smallish string section – and Clifford's right up front blowing warm and glistening solos, with titles that include "Willow Weep For Me", "Yesterdays", "Laura", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "Portrait Of Jennie".

new Miles Davis — Collectors Items ... LP
Prestige, 1953/1956. Good+ .... $19.99
A session of "collectors items" that Miles Davis recorded for Prestige in the 50s – both dates that were too short to be issued as albums by themselves, combined here into one full length record! The first batch of material is from 1953 – and features Davis working with Sonny Rollins and Charlie Parker (playing here under his "Charlie Chan" session name) – all in a mode that steps off a bit from the boppishness of Davis' Blue Note recordings. Titles include 2 takes of "Serpent's Tooth", plus "Round Midnight" and "Compulsion". The second half of the record is from 3 year later, 1956 – and again features Rollins, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Tracks are a bit longer and more mature in the Davis idiom – and titles include "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Vierd Blues", and "No Line".

Eric Dolphy with Booker Little — Far Cry (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1960. Used .... $8.99
Eric Dolphy's first meeting in the studio with trumpeter Booker Little – a brilliant batch of modernism that's easily one of the hippest records Little ever worked on! The Dolphy heard here is Eric at his most inventive – sharp-edged and angular one minute, then spiritually lyrical the next – playing flute, bass clarinet, and alto sax equally well on the record – and somehow managing to get Little to share his inspiration perfectly on every number. Other players include Jaki Byard on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – a rhythm team whose abilities are a big part of the success of the record – and titles include "Far Cry", "Mrs Parker Of KC", "Left Alone", "Ode To Charlie Parker", and "Miss Ann". Dizzy Gillespie — Diz Big Band ... LP
Verve, 1954. Very Good- .... $28.99
Beautiful stuff! While Charlie Parker had Ralph Burns to come up with some good string arrangements for him, Dizzy had the excellent Johnny Richards – with whom he worked on the earlier Diz & Strings LP, and on this stunning session of complicated arrangements that's very different than most of Dizzy's other albums! Richards does a perfect job of setting up orchestrations that continually fascinate – but which never detract from Dizzy's soloing, nor pull his trumpet into soporific dullness. Diz is the main soloist on all tracks, apart from the lusty tracks "Pile Driver" and "Cool Eyes", which feature nice work by Lucky Thompson. Other titles include "O Solow", "Can You Recall", and "Confusion".
(Deep groove Norgran pressing with trumpeter logo – nice and clean overall. Cover has light tape on two seams, and masking tape on a third.)

George Lewis — Complete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint & Soul Note (Shadowgraph/Imaginary Suite/Homage To/Change Of Season/Dutch) (5CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1977/1979/1985/1987. New Copy 5CDs .... $29.99
Amazing music from trombonist George Lewis – five different albums that each show a different side of his talents! First up is Shadowgraph 5 – a great early Black Saint, and a key example of the way the AACM spirit thrived overseas, thanks to the efforts of labels like this! The work is quite serious and experimental – almost compositional in nature, and definitely heading towards the AACM promise of "Great Black Music" – and other players include Roscoe Mitchell on saxes, Leroy Jenkins on violin, Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, Douglas Ewart on bass clarinet and other reeds, and Abdul Wadud on cello. One track even has Lewis playing the Moog in addition to trombone and tuba! Imaginary Suite is a duet with Douglas Ewart – and features Lewis both on trombone and electronics – and even his trombone at times is "electronically modified", making it a really cool-sounding instrument. Ewart plays a bit of percussion – plus bass clarinet and flute – and often hits some electronically-sensitive sounds with his reeds, making the album a really compelling interplay between acoustic and electric elements. Homage to Charlie Parker is hardly the bebop outing you might expect from the title, and instead a set of complicated work that's heavily in the AACM tradition! Side one features "Blues" – an investigation of older blues harmonics, but done in a very freeform, experimental way – with tenor trombone from Lewis, piano from Anthony Davis, bass clarinet from Doug Ewart, and moog from Richard Teitelbaum. Change Of Season is a killer tribute to the music of Herbie Nichols – played by a committed batch of modernists who are clearly inspired by his genius – including Misha Mengelberg on piano, Steve Lacy on soprano sax, and Han Bennink on drums. The set's completed by Dutch Masters – Lewis' last album for the label, done with a compelling lineup that includes Misha Mengelberg on piano, Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Ernst Reyseger on bass, and Han Bennink on drums – but in a style that's very different than the previous Change Of Season album.

new Ira Sullivan — Bird Lives! ... LP
Vee Jay, 1962. Very Good+ .... $8.99
In the years after Charlie Parker passed away, tributes to his greatness were a very common thing in local jazz scenes across the US. This is a prime example of that tradition, but way more than that, it's also a killer Chicago jazz session from the old days – featuring trumpeter Ira Sullivan at his best, along with some great local players that include tenorist Nicky Hill, pianist Jodie Christian, and bassist (Raphael) Don Garrett. The music is what you'd expect – loving renditions of Bird standards like "Klacktoveedesesteene" and "Love Letters" – but there's also a lot more going on underneath, and the album's as much a Charlie Parker tribute as it is a batch of bop and soul jazz numbers with a good underground feel.
(Rainbow label pressing. Cover has some wear and a small split on the spine, with some pen and small stains on the back.)

Verve, Early/Mid 50s. Used 5CD .... $39.99
An incredible document of a key genre in 50s jazz on record – the jam session tradition, recorded beautifully for Verve records by the legendary Norman Granz! The idea of a jam session was nothing new at the time, of course, but it was mostly a live phenomenon – known to players from concerts and club dates, or presented on vinyl by Granz, in his celebrated Jazz At The Philharmonic sessions. These dates mark a move into the studio by Granz – one that captures the same sort of energy and unique pairings of musicians that went down in the live sessions, with the added benefit of studio technology to make the work sound even clearer, and more intimate. The 5CD set brings together all 9 Jam Session albums – packaged beautifully in a slipcase with original album cover art, and a full 72 page booklet on the musicians, sessions, and titles included. Players include nearly everyone who might have worked for Verve in the 50s – Benny Carter, Charlie Parker, Johnny Hodges, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Buddy DeFranco, and countless others – and titles include "Jam Blues", "Funky Blues", "Apple Jam", "Blues For The Count", "Jamming For Clef", "Rose Room", "Blue Lou", and "Lullaby In Rhythm" – all in very long versions!
(In the original metal frame.)

Charlie Mariano — Charlie Mariano ... CD
1954. New Copy .... Around June 12, 2013
Insanely wonderful early work from Charlie Mariano – some of the freshest, cleanest alto sax work of its time! The album's one of Charlie's strongest early efforts – a no-nonsense quartet session that features rhythm by the trio of John Williams, Max Bennett, and Mel Lewis. Charlie's tone is impeccable – somewhere between Lee Konitz and Charlie Parker, with that back bay Boston blend of soul and modernism, making the city one of the best scenes for alto players in the 50s. Titles include "Blues", "Floormat", "I Heard You Cried Last Night", "Johnny One Note", and "King For A Day".

Charlie Mariano — Charlie Mariano Plays ... CD
1953. New Copy .... Around June 12, 2013
Brilliant early work from Charlie Mariano – key proof of his genius, and one of the main albums we'd recommend by him! The album has Charlie coming of his years in the Boston scene – boppish at some level, but blowing with a raspy soulfulness that really opens up his horn into new territory – not Charlie Parker, not Lee Konitz, but a whole new space and sound of expression for the alto sax! The group features Stu Williamson on trumpet and Frank Rosolino on trombone – both players who bring a slight west coast feel to the record, but never in too-cool ways that dampen Mariano's sound! Titles include "Green Walls", "Chloe", "Manteca", "S'Nice", "You Go To My Head", and "Give A Little Whistle".

new Clifford Brown — Clifford Brown With Strings (Japanese pressing) ... CD
EmArcy (Japan), 1955. Used .... $8.99 Just Sold Out!
A classic "with strings" session from Clifford Brown – nearly as well-done and perfect as some of Charlie Parker's sides for Verve, handled here with perhaps a slightly sweeter touch, as Neal Hefti's the man on arrangements. The core group's the Brown/Roach combo, augmented by a smallish string section – and Clifford's right up front blowing warm and glistening solos, with titles that include "Willow Weep For Me", "Yesterdays", "Laura", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "Portrait Of Jennie".

new Sonny Criss — Go Man! ... LP
Imperial, 1956. Used .... $399.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little album that's as hip as its cover image – one of 3 seminal mid 50s recordings for Imperial by LA altoist Sonny Criss! At this point in his career, Criss had a sharp-edged sound that could easily rival the best work by Sonny Stitt or Charlie Parker on the alto sax – but he also had a groove that was a bit more spacious, and a tone that was slightly more raspy – a wonderful quality that we can only describe as Criss-esque, recorded perfectly in the Imperial studios! The group here is a tight quartet – with Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums – and Criss' solos are brilliant throughout! Titles include "Wailin With Joe", "The Man I Love", "Blues For Rose", "Blue Prelude", and "Summertime".
(Original red label/deep groove Imperial pressing – nice and clean! Cover has light wear and aging, and some light splitting on the top seam – but this is a nice copy overall.)

new Miles Davis — Birth Of The Cool ... LP
Capitol, Late 40s/Early 50s. Used .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Legendary work from Miles Davis – large group sessions that virtually define the "cool" in cool jazz! The work's quite different from Davis' earlier bop sides with Charlie Parker – and show a distinct influence from modernists like Gerry Mulligan (who is on the recordings) and from the experiments of the Tristano school. Miles is less the leader than the creative visionary – as all players come together in a perfect blend of sound, perfectly polished, and with a very dark edge. Titles include "Jeru", "Move", "Venus De Milo", "Budo", and "Deception".

new Kenny Dorham — Blues In Bebop ... CD
Savoy, Late 40s. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest recorded work from trumpeter Kenny Dorham – presented here in an overstuffed set that brings together most of his appearances on the Savoy label! The core standout tunes here are 10 numbers recorded in 1946 by The Bebop Boys – a combo that featured Dorham, Sonny Stitt, and Bud Powell coming together on tight, short, very upbeat bop material that ranked with some of the best early 78s of the genre. Titles by this group include "Seven Up", "Bebop In Pastel", "Serenade To A Square", "Fools Fancy", and "Bombay". Other material on the CD includes a solo by Kenny on "The Jitney Man" by Billy Eckstine, plus 3 tracks with the Milt Jackson Sextet from 1949 – including "Conglomeration", "Bruz", and "Roll Em Bags". Kenny also plays on three 1949 recordings with Charlie Parker – "Barbados", "Scrapple From The Apple", and "Bebop" – as well as four 1956 numbers with Cecil Payne – including "Grooving High", "Man Of Moods", and "Saucer Eyes".

new Dizzy Gillespie — Jazz In Paris – Dizzy Gillespie & His Operatic Strings Orchestra ... CD
Universal (France), 1952. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dizzy and strings – a surprisingly great combination! Although it was Charlie Parker who first made famous the modernist "jazz with strings" approach, Dizzy does wonderfully here in the format – working in similar fashion with edgey backing from the "Operatic String Orchestra" in sessions recorded in Paris in the early 50s! The material was originally only issued as a number of separate 78rpm singles, but is brought together here with full notes and a few bonus tracks – making for a wonderful album that documents this really under-represented part of Dizzy's career. The solos are warm, but edgey – blown over the top of backings that shimmer with rich colors, but have a slightly modern bent. Titles include "Fine & Dandy", "Stormy Weather", "The Very Thought Of You", "Jalousie", "Sweet & Lovely", "The Man I Love", and "Ghost Of A Chance".

new Rahsaan Roland Kirk — Other Folks' Music ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rahsaan Roland Kirk takes on "other folks music" – that is, a host of tunes penned by other jazz artists – but as you'd expect, there's a really personal feel to the record overall – one that definitely makes the music Kirk's own by the end of the set! The album's a bit more subdued than some of his previous records, but no less creative – as there's a wonderfully understated quality to the record that really cements its charm – that undeniable Kirk genius at work, amidst an inventive lineup that includes Truty Pitts on electric piano, Hilton Ruiz on acoustic piano, Gloria Agnosti on harp, Richard Williams on trumpet, Roy Haynes on drums – and Roland himself on a great range of reeds – including tenor, flute, manzello, stritchaphone, reed trumpet, and harmonica! Titles include a great reworking of Frank Foster's "Simone", plus versions of Hilton Ruiz' "Arrival" , Trudy Pitts' "Anysha", Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee", and Kirk's own "Water For Robeson & Williams".

new Eddie Jefferson — Things Are Getting Better ... CD
Muse, 1974. New Copy .... $4.99 Out Of Stock
One of the weirdest, wildest albums ever from Eddie Jefferson – a real standout classic that shows him retooling his sound for the 70s! After years of writing lyrics to James Moody and Charlie Parker tunes, Eddie lays out some crazy lyrics for modern jazz standards like "Freedom Jazz Dance" and "Bitches Brew", as well as "Night In Tunisia", which he'd never done before – and also offers up a great take on Cannonball's "Things Are Getting Better", not to mention Sly Stone's "Thank You Fallentinme Be Mice Elf Again"! There's a few more standard bop number in the mix too – like "Billie's Bounce" and "I Just Got Back In Town – and support is from a great group that includes Billy Mitchell on tenor, Joe Newman on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass, and Mickey Tucker on keyboards.

new Larry Ridley & The Jazz Legacy Ensemble — Live At Rutgers ... CD
Strata East, 1989. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from bassist Larry Ridley – a set recorded many years after his debut on Strata East – but one that's done with an even deeper sound overall! The recording was done at the end of the 80s in New Jersey – but shows that the Strata spirit was still burning bright in the decade after the label had issued most of its classics – thanks to work from leaders like Ridley, who's really wonderful on the set! The performance is live, but has a well-conceived feel right from the start – a bold statement by Larry's Jazz Legacy ensemble – dedicated to older roots, but still more than willing to bring in new elements of their own. The combo features work from trumpeter Virgil Jones, trombonist Larry McClellan, tenorist Doug Miller, pianist Ed Stoute, and drummer Charlie Persip – plus bass from Ridley, and a bit of guest vocals from singer Jan Parker. Most numbers are long, and spin out with great soulful energy – and the set features tracks that include Hank Mobley's "The Vamp" and "The Breakthrough", Freddie Hubbard's "Osie Mae", Buddy Montgomery's "Bock To Bock", and Monk's "Ugly Beauty" – plus Ridley's own "Ypso Factor".

new Sonny Rollins — Worktime! ... LP
Prestige, 1955. Used .... $99.99 Out Of Stock
If worktime was like this for us, you'd catch us showing up on the job early every day – but sadly, nothing at our office can match the brilliance of early Sonny Rollins here – a sharp-edged genius that perfectly illustrates why he was one of the greatest players on his horn for many decades running! There's a depth of tone on the record that rivals Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young – but a quickness of pace and imagination that shows a clear influence from Charlie Parker, and a deftness that few were bringing to the tenor at the time. The rhythm section here is super tight – and features Ray Bryant on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all supporting Rollins' bold lead with lines that bristle with electricity, but still often fall back to let the sound of the tenor envelop the whole group. Tracks are longish, and titles include "Raincheck", "There Are Such Things", "Paradox", and "It's All Right With Me".
(Yellow & black label NYC pressing with deep groove! Vinyl has some light clicks on the intro, but is nice overall. Cover has a bit of seam splitting, and one small rip on the top.)

new Supersax — Supersax Originals – Jazz Club – Chasin The Bird/Dynamite ... CD
MPS/Universal (Germany), 1977/1979. New Copy .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Two MPS gems from this unusual 70s ensemble – back to back on the same CD! Chasin The Bird features classic bop modes, updated strongly for the 70s – and played by a hip group of older players who really know how to cook! Supersax is led by Med Flory on alto, who also did the arrangements – and works here with great reed help from Warne Marsh and Jay Migliori on tenor, Joe Lopes on alto, and Jack Nimitz on baritone – plus soaring sounds from Conte Candoli and Blue Mitchell on trumpets, Frank Rosolino on trombone, and Lou Levy on piano – all of whom really help the reed players find their groove! Charts are large, as is the ensemble, but there's a nice sense of individual personalities too – even when all the saxophonists are taking a solo together at once. Titles include "Shaw Nuff", "Drifting On A Reed", "Oop Bop Sh'Bam", "Now's The Time", and "The Song Is You". Dynamite is a looser, more free-swinging album than usual for Supersax – one that still has the group working with some key contributions from west coast jazz luminaries, but in a vibe that's almost more small combo than larger ensemble! The tracks here include a fair bit of Bud Powell and Charlie Parker numbers, but the arrangements are mighty fresh – open, and swinging with some hipper 70s touches, thanks to rhythms from a trio that features Lou Levy on piano, Fred Atwood on bass, and John Dentz on drums – players that are never locked into a strict bop mode. As with other Supersax albums, there's a brace of reed players working together at the front – Lanny Morgan on alto, Jack Nimitz on baritone, and both Jay Migliori and Don Menza on tenors – coming together as one voice on the solos, and getting some key help from Conte Candoli on trumpet and Frank Rosolino on trombone. Titles include "The Fruit", "Bambu", "Blues For Alice", "Tempus Fugit", "Parker's Mood", and a surprising, but great take on Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave".

new Modern Jazz Stars — Jazz Masquerade (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Crown/P-Vine (Japan), Mid 50s. New Copy .... $31.99 Out Of Stock
An unusual record that's had folks puzzling for decades – but one that's also kept their interest too, thanks to the quality of the music on the set! The record's got an unusual gimmick – in that it promises to feature all-star players encumbered by record contracts with other labels – listed as possibilities on the back that include Howrad McGhee, Wardell Gray, Teddy Edwards, Charlie Parker, and others. Yet it's our guess that this might be a pretty obscure lineup, but a great one too – and most numbers are live recordings, done with a hell of a lot of bop fire – quite possibly pulled from that late 40s stretch when Crown/Modern Records was doing a great job of capturing some of the early bop in LA! There's more than a few trumpets at times – and we're guessing one might be McGhee – and given their penchant for recording Vido Musso and Wardell Gray, it's quite possible both of these players are in the mix too. Yet despite the lack of real data on the players, the whole thing's a musical treasure with plenty of soulful bop on offer. Titles include "Ben's Mood", "Steady Teddy", "Deep Purple", "Big Boy (parts 1 & 2)", "Why Not", and "Stompin".

new Steely Dan — Pretzel Logic ... CD
ABC, 1974. New Copy .... $4.99 9.98 Out Of Stock
Magical music from the team of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker – one of those records that seems to state its existence in simple, straightforward terms – but which is also filled with undeniably complex moments! There's a definite echo of older jazz here – heard famously in the Horace Silver riff stolen for "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", or the Duke Ellington cover of "East St Louis Toodle-oo" – as well as in the group's own "Parker's Band" – one of the strangest songs you'll ever hear about Bird! Yet there's also a lot more going on too – complicated changes and timings, oblique lyrics, and a warmly produced sound that really sparkles on tracks like "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", "Monkey In Your Soul", "With A Gun", "Pretzel Logic", "Night By Night", and "Charlie Freak".

new Jean Rotman Trio — Mattias Job (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Disques Dessinee (Japan), 1986. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A rich array of sounds from French pianist Jean Rotman – a player who seems to bring way more here to a trio date than you might expect! The album starts with a very boppish tribute to Charlie Parker, but then moves to a sensitive piano duet, then swings into a sweet funky number with a bass-heavy break at the start – and that's all just on side one! By the end of the record, there's plenty of great surprises to discover – all handled by Rotman's deep, warm tone – which is often echoed nicely by bassist Patrice Soler – and given subtle inspiration by drummer Laurent Rosemain – all in a way that's a great illustration of the creative complexity you'll find in the oft-overlooked French scene of this period. Titles include "Charlie Parker Par Coeur", "Seattle M'Etait Conte", "A Tune For Mat", "Degriffe", "Bossa Lissee", and "Bring Back Your Strawberry".

new Bobby Hutcherson — Cruisin The Bird ... LP
Landmark, 1988. New Copy .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record from Bobby Hutcherson – easily one of his best of the 80s, and with some great touches that recall his best 70s work! The album title might fool you into thinking that Bobby's working in Charlier Parker territory here – but he's not, and is instead grooving in a mellow and soulful west coast mode – working with a totally great group that includes Ralph Moore on tenor and soprano sax, Buddy Montgomery on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. The whole album's a magical picture of tone, color, and light – but the especially standout track is "Sierra" – a totally killer number that has these arch angles and edges that rival the best sounds heard on Hutcherson's Montara album! Other titles include "On The Delta", "Crusisin The Bird", "Imminent Treasures", and "All Or Nothing At All".
