Charlie PalmieriLatin Bugalu ... LP
Atlantic, 1968. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A darn tough one to find – and one of Charlie Palmieri's best records from the 60s! The session is an obscure one-off done for Atlantic in 1968 – and for some reason, the record was never issued as widely as some of Charlie's other sides for smaller labels during the time, making it one of the most hard-to-find chapters of his career. The tracks are played by a tight little Latin jazz combo – with Charlie on piano, Julian Priester on trombone, and Louis Ramirez on timbales – and the set is filled with some great original tunes that mix together boogaloo rhythms and straight ahead Latin jazz. Tracks include "Bugalu", "Mambo Show", "Panama's Boogaloo", and "Bitter Sweet" – plus a Latin soul instrumental reading of "Up Tight".

new Alegre All Stars — They Just Don't Makim Like Us Any More ... LP
Alegre, 1976. Very Good .... $24.99
Excellent compilation of some of the best tracks recorded by the Alegre All Stars. One of the greatest recording projects in Latin music, the Alegre All Stars was a loose collective of great talents like Charlie Palmieri, Bobby Rodriguez, Chombo, Jo Quijano, Kako, Johnny Pacheco, and lots of others – and the records they made were laidback sessions full of lots of fire, communication, and laughter. Few groups matched their ability to lay down a tightly swinging Latin groove, and you'll hear the proof on tracks like "Manteca", "Estoy Buscando A Kako", "El Sopon", and "El Manicero".
(Original US pressing. Cover has a split top seam and a bit of splitting on the bottom.)

Kako's After Hour Orchestra — Tributo A Noro Morales ... LP
Alegre, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An amazing album that's one of the greatest-ever descarga sessions to come out of the New York scene! The album's supposedly a tribute to pianist Noro Morales – but it's got a fire and energy that goes way beyond even Morales' best work, one that has the group recording in a long-format approach that was very different, and much harder-jamming than any of Morales' recordings from the 50s. The tracks are mostly Morales originals, but you'd hardly recognize them in the way the band takes off from their simple structure – using the room of the full recording to groove hard on the album's best long tracks – "Mi Guajira", "Ponce", and "Vitamina" – all of which are the kind of Latin jammers you buy reissues like this for! Players include Louie Ramirez, Charlie Palmieri, Cachao, and Hector Rivera – and other tracks include "Perfume De Gardenia", "Desvelo De Amor", and "Malditos Celos".

new Herbie Mann — Latin Mann – Afro To Bossa To Blues ... LP
Columbia, 1965. Very Good .... $6.99
An excellent album of Latin material from Herbie Mann – and proof that he's equally great in just about any setting! The album's a rare Columbia Records outing from Herbie – but it's easily one of his greatest of the 60s, thanks to some really smoking arrangements from Oliver Nelson – plus an all-star cast of players that includes Carmell Jones, Dave Pike, Jimmy Heath, Patato Valdez, Willie Bobo, Charlie Palmieri, and a young Chick Corea on piano! Tracks are short, tight, and very rhythmic – grooving in a snapping approach to Latin that's filled with plenty of soul, but which also features plenty of jazzy touches as well. A few tunes here are familiar, but they're given wonderful new treatment by Herbie and Nelson – and the record easily beats most Verve or Impulse sessions of this type at their own game! Tracks include "Bijou", "Ave Maria Morena", "Watermelon Man", "Interlude", "Let's Boom Chitty Boom", "Senor Blues", "Jungle Fantasy", and "Jive Samba".
(360 Sound stereo pressing. Cover has some wear, and a name in pen on the back.)

Ozzie Torrens — Boogaloo In Apartment 41 ... LP
Decca/El Sonido, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Monster Latin jazz and boogaloo – all the way through! The album's a rare gem from the short-lived Latin Soul years on Decca – cut by Ozzie Torrens, and featuring a great Latin lineup that includes Louie Ramirez on vibes, Charlie Palmieri on piano, and Manny Duran on trumpet – all swinging in very soulful formation, and going for the stripped-down small combo sound that the Spanish Harlem kids were using on the indie labels at the time! The tracks are all instrumentals – with heavy duty playing all the way through, and loads of rhythmic tracks that are peppered with some sock-solid jazzy solo work! The whole thing's a swinger – and titles include "Ozzaboo", "Boogaloo In Apt 41", "Way Out Mambo", "Cool Jerk", "Mia's Boogaloo", and "Tijuana Grass".

Various — Latin Dance Party 1 – Latin Grooves From The Atlantic & Atco Vaults ... CD
Atlantic/Warner (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
Great Latin grooves from Atlantic Records! It's a little known fact that Atlantic Records actually had a pretty hot Latin catalog at one time – and even though the label was best-known for their soul and jazz releases, they also took the time to cut a rare few Latin sides, all with the same high quality as their better-known output. The set only scratches the surface of that rich Latin tradition – but it does a great job of bringing out cuts from hard-to-find albums that we barely ever see on original vinyl. The general groove is Latin Soul and groovy Latin Jazz – and although a few of the cuts are by names that are more easily recognized, others are by artists you might be surprised to know recorded for Atlantic at all! Titles include "Stop & Go" by Willie Rosario, "Mambo Watusi" by Rene Bloch, "Tumbando Cana" by Louie Ramirez, "Baila Cinderella" by Hubert Laws, "Mambo Show" by Charlie Palmieri, "Motherless Child" by Luis Gasca, "Windjammer" by Mongo Santamaria, "Jumpin With Symphony Sid" by Louie Ramirez, and "Tell It" by Mongo Santamaria. 12 cuts in all.

new Machito & His Orchestra — Fireworks ... CD
MP/Sony, 1977. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
70s work from Machito – still very much in the mode of his classics from earlier years, but with an undeniable punch on a few numbers, thanks to the smoking salsa groove of the Coco Records label! The album's got one really standout track entitled "Macho" – a 13 minute descarga number that spins out with lots of different changes, and which features some nice electric jazzy touches! Harvey Averne produced the entire session, with a nice undercurrent of Latin soul – and the album also features Charlie Palmieri on both organ and piano. Other tracks include "Mi Ritmo Llego", "Soy Salsero", "No Seras Para Mi", and "Desilusion".

new Tito Puente — Tito Puente & His Concert Orchestra ... LP
Tico, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent set from Tito – very funky, unlike most of his other work from the time! The record has a great electric vibe to it – thanks to a hip bass player in the group, to Charlie Palmieri, who plays organ and electric piano on the record, and to Tito himself, who's never sounded better, playing a range of percussion, vibes, and electric piano too! The best tunes have a funky NuYorica groove – nice and driving, about as funky as Tito can get – with jazz solos by Sal Nistico, Dick Menza, Rene McLean, and others. Cuts include "Black Brothers", "110th Street and 5th Ave", "Ritual Fire Dance", "Mambo Diablo", and "Ah! Ah!". Very cool, and a very different side of his style!

new Various — New York Latin Hustle! – The Sound of New York ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s. Used 2CD .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible double-length set from Soul Jazz – a collection of Latin tunes that's easily as important as their groundbreaking NuYorica collection from a decade before! Like that one, most of the work here is from the 70s – and showcases a time in New York Latin when the music was really opening up to new changes – not just the Latin Soul modes picked up in the previous decades, but also new elements of jazz, funk, disco, and even some more traditional styles from Cuba and Puerto Rico. The grooves aren't just standard Latin, but often have some very surprising bits in the mix – funky instrumental riffing, soulful vocals, and more – all often in a mode that's perfect for the dancefloor! 2CD set features 23 tracks in all – with titles that include "Do It Any Way You Wanna" by Louie Ramirez, "Tighten Up" by Al Escobar, "Snidely Whiplash" by The Alexander Review, "Joe Cuba's Madness" by Joe Cuba, "Control" by Ismael Quinones, "Abidjan" by Ray Barretto, "Porcupine" by Nature Zone, "Soul Makossa" by Johnny Zamot, "No Nos Pararan" by La Charanga 76, "Sorongo" by Cortijo, "Mala Calunga" by Johnny Sedes, "Angustia Maternal" by Willie Colon, "Mai Kinshasa" by Jose Mangual, "Shoot The Pump" by J Walter Negro & The Loose Jointz, "Mi Mambo Conga" by Eddie Palmieri, "Om Marrero" by Seguida, "Alex Mambo" by Machito, "Dancin & Prancin" by Candido, "El Bollinski En D7" by Charlie Santiago & Eddie Montalvo, "Doug's Room" by Mauricio Smith, and "I Had A Friend" by The Family Affair.

new Johnny Ray/Las Estrellas De Nueva York — Camino De Fama – Descarga Salsa Jazz ... CD
JZ Productions, Late 60s/1975. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Two great slices of work from Johnny Ray – one a salsa set from the 70s, the other a batch of boogaloo tunes from the 60s! The first 5 tracks here are from a studio set directed by Charlie Palmieri, and done in the best New York salsa mode of the time – with vocals from Yayo El Indio and Adalberto Santiago, and other players who include Barry Rogers on trombone, Ray Maldonado on trumpet, and Manny Corchado on timbales – all grooving tightly in soaring, soulful formation on tracks that include "La Guerra", "Oye Nicola", "Que Risa Me Da", "Descarga No 2", and "Descarga El Tres". The second half of the CD features some real killers from Johnny's boogaloo years as Johnny Zamot – tracks from his Decca albums and other indie sides that bristle with tight, jazzy energy! Tracks include 3 great Pat Patrick compositions – "Catfish Bag", "Gaboom", and "Mambo Village" – plus "Descarga Zamot", "Guadajaljara", "Alma Llanera", and "Kool & The Gang".

new Willie Rosario — Fabuloso Y Fantastico ... CD
Neliz, Mid 60s. New Copy .... $11.99 13.99 Out Of Stock
Fabulous and fantastic work from Willie Rosario – a stone cooker from his 60s years, and a set that's hopping with plenty of lively surprises throughout! As with other Rosario work of the time, there's a strong dose of jazz in the mix here – piano lines that echo the changes that were going on at the time in the music of Eddie and Charlie Palmieri, and lots of horn parts that step quickly across the top – burning with fire, and really reaching to new heights with a well-crafted sound. The group's nice and small, which gives the record a relatively lean feel – and although some cuts have vocals, it's really the instrumentation there that makes the whole thing burn! Titles include the great jazzy track "Yayi's Instant Mambo" – plus "Wobbly Blues", "A Villa Palmeras", "Los Generales De La Capital", "Mayimbe", "Bailan Guaguanco", and "Me Voy Para El Bonche".
