On Challenge, recorded in Paris in Spring, 2010, they play great, mostly original material with passionate conviction and a a boundless sense of intutitive interplay. Singer and Murray communicate masterfully, and their excellent group includes Rasul Siddik on trumpet, Lafayette Gilchrist on piano, Jaribu Shahid and the always great Hamid Drake on drums. A garage pop monster from The Knickerbockers – a set that smokes from the start with their super-huge hit "Lies" – then grooves into a rowdy batch of groovers that almost have the feel of the early fab four at their best! Like The Beatles, the group definitely has a way of harmonizing along with their tunes – bringing in a sweetly melodic quality, even when rough around the edges – which makes for a great mix of sounds we can really endorse. Titles include "Lies", "Just One Girl", "Can't You See I'm Trying", "Wishful Thinking", "You'll Never Walk Alone", and "I Can Do It Better".

Classic hard surf stuff on the lost Challenge label! Tracks include "Ram Rod", "Nine Toes", "Wipeout", "Moovin N Groovin", and "Surfin At Mazatlan". You get the groove, and it's tight tight tight.

Some consider this the worst point in Louis' career – when he was singing odd pop material for Decca, and had really left his jazz roots behind. We don't think it's that bad, though – and the album's got a wonderfully playful style that shows what a great entertainer Louis could be when he was up for the challenge. Gordon Jenkins did the arrangements, and the record features Louis' version of "Blueberry Hill" – plus the tracks "Chlo-e", "Jeannine", "Spooks!", "Trees", and "It's All In The Game".

The title sounds like an old R&B song from the 50s, but the album's a searing collaboration between three of the boldest improvisers in 70s European jazz – Peter Brotzmann on reeds, Harry Miller on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums! Although Miller and Moholo can have warmer moments when working in British Ogun modes, they're definitely well-matched here with the young Brotzmann's energy – very freewheeling on both of their instruments, and rising to Peter's challenge to find new sounds at just about every twist and turn of the record! Titles include "Long Time Service", "Kucken und Drucken", "Schnell Im Biss", and "The Nearer The Bone The Sweeter The Meat".

A rare score from French arranger Michel Colombier – penned for an equally-obscure film directed by the great Jacques Demy! The album follows the same musical style as some of Demy's better-known work from the 60s – like Umbrellas Of Cherbourg or Young Girls Of Rochefort – although the overall style is a bit darker, and Colombier's music definitely rises to the challenge. Vocals don't feature as heavily as on some of Demy's movies with Michel Legrand, but they still have a strong role in the music – and this beautiful 2CD package brings the complete score to light for the first time – quite an achievement considering that the film never even made it to video. Titles include "Edith Et Sa Mere", "Violette Amoureuse", "Visite D'Edmond", "La Chambre D'Hotel", "Chez La Baronne", "La Rupture", and "Mme Pelletier Et Sa Fille".

A wild soundtrack from Nico Fidenco! It's a spy score for the mid 60s film Agente Logan Mission Ypotron – in which Luis Davila plays a superspy with groovy night vision glasses, trying to save the world from a deadly weapon called the Ypotron – and the mod garage guitar grooves are a fine foil! The opening and closing tune "Ypotron" is beat style number with English lyrics composed by Fidenco and performed by The Sorrows – and the instrumentals in between often carry on that mad groovy pulp flavor – with more sparer, more tension based modes, trippy bits of organ and others with a bit of sultry Spanish flair. Other titles include "The World Of Lemmy Logan", "Unnerving Waiting", "Brainwasth", "Love's Guitar", "Manhunt", "Romantic Moment", "Exotica", "Final Confrontation", "Deadly Challenge" and more. 19 tracks in all.

Not an orchestra, but the work of a single individual – yet served up with a sound that's more blistering than most large ensemble! Michel Coffi conceives the record as a "new challenge for the music of the future" – an "interactive collaboration" that heavily mixes and processes sounds from a wide array of sources – sometimes found, sometimes performed – all brought together in Coffi's larger sound design with a very explosive aesthetic! Many sounds are so compressed together they explode like beats, and most of the elements in the blend are just on the cusp of recognition – so that you keep thinking you hear something you know, but aren't entirely sure. Definitely a record that lives up to its promise – with titles that include "Blue Ocean", "Total Clash", "Electro Breakdown", "Peppermint Sax", "Natural Swing", "Black Tribal Imbroglio", and "Red Track".

The record's got a very similar approach – highly rhythmic, very soulful piano lines that are heavy on the left hand – which fits perfectly with the album's jumping grooves – handled by a bassist and drummer who are definitely not as fluid as Eldee Young and Redd Holt – but who more than make up for that fact with a lot of drive and enthusiasm! Titles include "Cherry Pie", "Big Talk", "The Lunch Bunch", "Blues For Me", "Lonesome Me", "You Know I Love You", and "Rock Me Baby".

A really righteous little number from Nicole Willis – one that comes across with the funky sophistication of the best work on early 70s Curtom Records! Funky grooves from The Soul Investigators mix with a nice bit of strings on the track – elevating the tune from straight deep funk mode into something far hipper – and showing us that Nicole's got all the vocal chops to meet the challenge! A really wonderful number that would have been one of our favorite tracks of the 70s, had it been issued so many years ago!

The amazing second album from Brazilian singer Maria Rita – and a real departure from the first! This time around, Maria's working live in the studio – in a warmly spontaneous setting that's a nice departure from the more confined modes of her debut – and which is given some especially nice touches on production by Lenine! There's a spirit here that goes far beyond Rita's introduction to the world as the daughter of Elis Regina – and which has the singer really moving into her own territory, and working with some of the more globally-directed soul of some of the other young singers of the current Brazilian scene. Most tracks feature strong acoustic piano from Tiago Costa – who also handled most of the arrangements on the album, and brings in a warm mix of jazz that occasionally grooves with a few funky touches as well. We're honestly surprised at how much we love this one – and in one fell swoop, Rita's managed to challenge so many of the electronically-augmented Brazilian singers of late – with a mostly-acoustic outing that's got even more raw power! Titles include "Mal Intento", "Recado", "Caminho Das Aguas", "Casa Pre-Fabricada", "Minha Alma", "Sobre Todas As Coisas", and "Sem Aviso". DVD features a bonus "Making Of" film!

Two soul classics from Jerry Butler! Moon River is an incredible album of sophisticated soul tunes – one that features Jerry's hit single of "Moon River", the first version of the song to chart after Mancini composed it – plus original tunes "I Found A Love" and "Butterfly", plus great renditions of "Where Do I Turn", "Lost Without You", "No End Or Time", "Couldn't Go To Sleep", and "The Challenge". Delicious Together features Jerry in a very big-selling set of soul duets with Betty Everett – some of the first male/female soul tracks recorded in the 60s, and the beginning of a sub-genre that would go on to become very popular. Titles include "Let It Be Me", "I Can't Stand It", "Fever", "Just Be True", "It's All Right", "Ain't That Loving You Baby", "The Way You Do The Things You Do", and "Our Day Will Come".

A pair of overlooked albums from Clover – a great Bay Area group from the start of the 70s – best known for later work with Elvis Costello and Huey Lewis! Clover is a great start for a very cool group – a set that definitely draws on some of the "out of the city" sounds of the post-Haight scene in SF – as you might guess from the cover – but which also has some funkier undercurrents too, and almost a garagey mix of soul amidst the rootsy elements – one that really shows the evolution of a group like this from the styles of a few years before! Titles include a cover of "Shotgun", plus "Come", "Could You Call It Love", "Southbound Train", "Going To The Country", and "Stealin". Fourty Niner shows a wonderful growth in Clover – a record that really has the group coming into their own, and hitting some of the best Marin County vibes of the time! There's a definite rootsy feel to the record – some of those Bay Area transmogrifications of sounds from the south, into much more hippie-oriented styles – but there's also a sense of confidence and care with songwriting that should have made these guys huge – a quality that easily rivals the best work from the late Byrds or early Eagles camp – with maybe a bit to challenge The Band too – served up with a great Fantasy Records rock approach all the way through. Titles include "Mr Moon", "Harvest", "Old Man Blues", "Sound Of Thunder", and "Love Is Gone".

Damn great work from Ledisi – an artist who hasn't missed a beat since moving to the majors a few years back – sounding almost funkier than ever before, thanks to some impeccable production and razor-sharp instrumentation! Ledisi's vocals are beyond challenge – old school deep soul we first came to love years back, on her classic indie sets – and this time around, the instrumentation seems even rawer than we remember – as if there's an old school funky combo backing the singer up on some tracks, mixed with other numbers that have some fuller backings, but still really retain their edge. Production is by a crew with some really great ears for this sort of sound – Rex Rideout, Raphael Saadiq, and others – and from the songwriting credits, it's clear that Ledisi's still very much in charge of the overall shape of the album. Titles include "Runnin", "Everything Changes", "Turn Me Loose", "Love Never Changes", "Knockin", "Goin Thru Changes", "I Need Love", "Say No", "Please Stay", and "Trippin".

A legendary run of music from the late, great Sam Cooke – almost all of his recordings for RCA Records, packaged here in one sweet little package! The scope of the set is wonderful – and almost something of a revelation, given that a number of these titles have never appeared on CD in the US before – making this collection a real discovery in soul music! Cooke first came out of the underground in the late 50s – and by the time he hit RCA, was really ready to take on new challenges – recording some key tracks that would help redefine the sound of soul for the 60s – and also working on some special album projects that expanded the range of work that he was handling – showing off some great sides of his talents. The set features the killer live album One Night Stand – recorded at the Harlem Square Club – plus the studio albums Cooke's Tour, Hits Of The 50s, Swing Low, My Kind Of Blues, Twistin The Night Away, Mr Soul, and Night Beat – all packaged in these cool little LP-styled sleeves!

A mix of storming instrumentals and vocal tunes by The Eliminators – one of the great 60s studio creations tailor-made to rip it up on surf, drag and any kinda thematic grooves! This one includes some takes on the Liverpool sound, as well – and the players include a few soon-to-be legends like Leon Russell – who serves as the musical arranger here! A nice mix of groovy and seedy stormers. Includes "Can't Buy Me Love", "Twist And Shout", "Needles And Pins", "Classy Lotus Chassis", "Surfing Iguana", "Malibu Wipeout", "The Challenger", "Hillclimb Hilda", "Red Hot Scrambler – Go!" and more.

A mindblowing moment on the Chicago avant scene of the 80s – a key flowering of the talents of Hal Russell – a musician who'd been working the Windy City since the early 60s, yet who really came into his own in these later years! Hal challenges both the AACM and the European underground with this smoking little set – opening up with unbridled energy on a range of instruments – including drums, vibes, C melody sax, cornet, and even zither – and working with equally energetic younger players who include Chuck Burdelik on tenor, alto, clarinet, and flute; Brian Sandstrom on bass, trumpet, and gong; Curt Bley on bass; and Steve Hunt on vibes and drums, alternating the instruments with Russell from track to track. All tunes are originals, and sound incredibly fresh all these many years later – with titles that include "Uncontrollable Rages", "Kit Kat", "Linda Jazz Princess", and "Seven Spheres". CD features two previously unreleased tracks – "Lost Or" and "C Melody Mania".

The third and best album yet from Sao Paulo Underground – formed by Chicago scene veteran and sonic adventurer Rob Mazurek – with a sound that's informed by the rhythms and creatively boundless possibilities of Tropicalia era Brazil and well beyond, along with the cosmic spirit of other Mazurek projects such as the Exploding Star Orchestra. This is hypnotic, attention seizing work that pushes boundaries and challenges tradition while still respecting it – it's never less than fully engrossing and pulls you right in, but it also skirts convention on just about every level. Mazurek's on coronet and electronics that fracture and fuzz out the atmosphere, creating some really dynamic interplay with instrumentation. Mauricio Takara is on cavaquinho, drums and percussion, Guilherme Granado on keys, loops, samples and percussion and Richard Ribeiro on drums. A pair of excellent tracks feature fellow modern greats with roots in the Chicago underground – vibes player Jason Adasiewicz and drummer John Herndon on "Just Lovin'" and "Six Six Eight" – the latter also featuring bass player Matthew Lux. The entire album is no less impressive, though! Titles include "Jagoda's Dream", "Pigeon", "Carambola", "Colibri", "Lado Leste", and "Rio Negro".

The complete Tamla and Motown singles of The Satintones – the soul, R&B & popular music juggernaut's first male vocal group – and a treasure trove of rare post doo wop from the end of the 50s/beginning of the 60s! It's fascinating for the history herein – the group is hugely under-anthologized in a world of myriad Motown compilations – which is a real shame, as you'll hear in this sweet set – with numbers that rely on the doo wop influences as well as tunes more devoted to lead vocals – with a slew of early Berry Gordy productions and compositions. The set includes the then legally challenged Shirelles knockoff/answer song "Tomorrow and Always" plus "Motor City", "Going To The Hop", "Sugar Daddy", "A Love That Can Never Be", "Foot Stomping Time", My Kind Of Love", "Boogie Woogie Heart", "Because I Love You", "You Can't Beat My Lovin" and many more. 26 tracks in all.

Pete Terrace challenges Pete Rodriguez for the title of "King Of The Boogaloo" in this live set recorded at Chez Jose in New York! The album's got a few tracks that say boogaloo, but which aren't – but that's still ok with us, because the bulk of the set is a hard grooving batch of uptempo groovers that would make anyone proud – and the record's easily one of Pete's best from the 60s! Includes covers of "El Pito", "At The Party", and "Bang Bang" – plus Marty Sheller-penned originals like "Do The Boogaloo", "I'm Gonna Make It", "Here Comes Pete", and "No! No! No!". Pete's vibes sound mighty nice, and the pianist in the group is nice and firey!

An incredible record by Lenny Tristano – one that features him playing solo piano, but in a way that's so inventive, so creative, so pyrotechnic, that Atlantic Records had to include text on the back cover saying "No use is made of multi-tracking, over-dubbing, or tape-speeding" – just to prove that the whole thing was simply a product of Tristano's legendary prowess on the piano! The album's also one of the last (the last?) that Lennie ever cut – and although many other players are kind of faltering in last sessions like this, Lennie's sounding better than ever – ready to take on a realm of new challenges in the 60s. Titles include "Love Lines", "G Minor Complex", "Becoming", and "Deliberation".

An early 80s classic from Richard Dimples Fields – one of the most unique talents in soul music of his generation – with an appeal that's both down home, and smoothly sophisticated at the time! In a way, Fields' music represents many changes his audience was going through at the time – classing things up a bit, and heading into the mainstream – yet still very much concerned about the same issues and challenges of years past. The approach is almost southern soul by way of southern California – rough edges polished out, but still earthy enough to hang out with the crowd from back home. Almost all titles are originals, and Richard handled most of the production too – on tracks that include "If It Ain't One Thing It's Another", "After I Put My Lovin On You", "Baby Work Out", "Mr Look So Good", "Taking Applications", and "A Freak On The Side".

We're not sure why Wendy never hit bigger at the time – because her singles here are wonderful – excellent female soul that not only ranks with the best of the Stax sound of the time, but which also challenges the bite of some of the best Motown music too – thanks to a particularly northern groove on some of the best cuts here! In fact, it may well be this style – often closer to Detroit soul than the usual Memphis bag at Stax – that might have held Wendy back. But that's hardly an issue all these many years later – and our hat's off to the folks at Light In The Attic for not only bringing together her rare singles, but also collecting unreleased songs, other rarities, and even material performed with the group The Drapels – all recorded in the years 1964 and 1965, and supported by some great notes too. Titles include "Bar B Q", "I Wish I Were That Girl", "What Will Tomorrow Bring", "Last Love", "Crowded Park", "Give You What I Got", "Deep In My Heart", "Wondering", "First Kiss", "Reap What You Sow", "After Laughter Comes Tears", and "He Hasn't Failed Me Yet".

A treasure trove of Brit sound library work – most of it from the legendary KPM 1000 Series, plus assorted bits from the Conroy label as well! The work here leans heavily towards funky jazz – those fuzzy, hard-driving tunes that always made KPM sides a key choice for action films and cop shows – and which have made digging through sound library records such a delight all these many decades later! The compilers did a really wonderful job with this set – creating a feel that's a bit different than the usual sound library collection – because although funky overall, the package also features some jazzy moments too – key cuts that are interspersed with the action moments to create a really fleshed-out sense of mood and feeling. A killer set from Italian jazz gurus Cicci Santucci & Enzo Scoppa – an early 70s quartet effort that has a more fiery and overall freer sound than other Santucci Scoppa efforts of the era! This is one of those records that challenges our expectations of a combo, or in this case a pair, of artists that we've loved over the years, and their work is never predictable, but this one moves them in a more exciting and improvisational realm that works masterfully. Trumpet player Santucci and tenor sax player Scoppa work with an intuitive harmony together as always, but the vibe is far reaching a frenetic here in away that moves them away from their more hard bop rooted sounds. Many tense moments, but never far out, or compromising the fluid interplay. The quartet on this record includes a pair of Brunos – Tommaso on bass and Biriaco on drums.
