Last PoetsLast Poets (Celluloid pressing) ... CD
Celluloid, 1970/1984. Used ... $6.99
The first album by the second group to call themselves the Last Poets – and as fierce a document of their rich talents as you'll ever find – bursting forth with anger and righteousness at a level as tight as Gil Scott-Heron's first album! The group here is the key second lineup of the ensemble of wordsmiths – comprised of Abiodun Oyewole, Alafia Pudim, and Omar Ben Hassan, plus the percussionist Nilaja – and most cuts feature only spare percussion backing over the spoken protest poetry – delivered with a brutal edge that really sums up the righteous politics of the time. Titles include "Run, N****r", "On The Subway", "When The Revolution Comes", "Jones Comin' Down", "Black Thighs", "N*****s Are Scared Of Revolution", and "Wake Up, N*****s" – all of which should give you a good picture of what's going on with the record! CD

Miles DavisComplete Amsterdam Concert ... LP
Celluloid (France), 1957. Near Mint- 2LP ... $39.99
A lost Miles Davis concert – recorded in 1957, with many of the same players he used for his classic soundtrack to the French film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud! The group's a quintet with French players Barney Wilen on tenor, Rene Utreger on piano, and Pierre Michelot on bass – grooving with help from Kenny Clarke on drums – and tracks are longish and include many late 50s jazz standards – like "Bag's Groove", "Four", "Walkin", "Round Midnight", and "Lady Bird". Barney Wilen's young tone is razor sharp at this point – and makes for a great counterpoint to the sweeter horn of Miles, coming together with the same magic they shared in their wonderful soundtrack work together. There's a bit of crackle in the recording quality, but the concert's well worth seeking out! LP, Vinyl record album
(80s French issue in a "2 Records Set" cover. Cover has minor center splits in the seams and is faded a bit at the edges.)

✨✧ Fela & Roy AyersMusic Of Many Colors ... LP
Celluloid/Knitting Factory, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99
One of the best soul collaborations ever! Fela and Roy Ayers team up for this whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Long overdue! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lightnin' RodHustlers Convention ... LP
Celluloid, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff – incredibly hard and incredibly funky, and a masterpiece all the way through! Long before there was any talk of gangster rap, Jalal of the Last Poets recorded this album of gamblin', pimpin', and hard double dealin'. It's a fantastic album-long ride through the dark side of the black underworld, and is the aural equivalent of a blacksploitation flick. Kool & The Gang provided the music – and Jalal tells the whole story throughout, in the same hard rappin' style he used with the Last Poets! The record's an undisputed classic, and includes the sample classic "Sport", plus loads of other righteous funky cuts like "Spoon", "Grit's Den", and "Sentenced To The Chair"! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gilberto GilSoy Loco Por Ti America ... CD
Celluloid, 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
A standout album for Gilberto Gil from the mid 80s – and a record that broke him out to a wider variety of audiences, thanks to some quick licensing by Celluloid! Gil's really hitting a strong world dancefloor groove here – with lots of his older funky lines still in place, crafted around some hook-heavy production from Liminha. The album's filled with catchy tunes that still preserve a rootsy and authentic feel – and titles include a great remake of the classic "Soy Loco Por Ti America", plus "Vida", "Aquele Abraco", "Baba Alapala", "Jubiamba", "Mardi Dix Mars", and "Mar De Copacabana". A bit rawer than other work by the group, but still very much in the vein of this classic mid 80s alliance between Peter Brotzmann, Sonny Sharrock, Bill Laswell, and Ronald Shannon Jackson. Titles include "Line Of Fire", "Big Boss Man", "Sore Titties", and "My Balls/Your Chin". Ugh! CD

Celluloid, 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A stripped-down rootsy session – similar to some of the sparer Afro-Cuban traditionalist sides that were coming out of New York in the early 80s. Ponce put the set together, and other players include Paquito D'Rivera, Jose Trapaga, Joe De Jesus, Nelson Rodriguez, and Bill Laswell. Most tracks feature spare conga and percussion jams – and titles include "Basta De Cuentos", "Invacion De 80", "Cojelo Suave", "Africa Contemporanea", and "Solo Para Ti". LP, Vinyl record album

An odd collaboration between Afrika Bambaataa and John Lydon that was sort of club hit at the time, but we're not sure what to make of it these days. Dense production by Bill Laswell with his standard heavy beats, guitar and synth lines. The vocal version has Bambaataa and Lydon predicting the end of the world and the dub version in mostly instrumental with lots of cut-up vocal samples. 12-inch, Vinyl record

KinksEverybody's In Showbiz ... LP
RCA, 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
An overlooked gem from The Kinks – a set that's got all the wit of their late 60s material, a bit of the rootsy currents of Muswell Hillbillies, and a lot more bite than the group would have in some of their next few albums to come! Ray Davies' pen is razor-sharp, as is his vocal approach – and the songs are maybe even more gritty than the group would have done a few years before – furthered by some of the instrumental currents that also bring in a few acoustic elements and some Americanized riffs, which are then also matched by an occasional twang in Ray's vocal presentation. Plus, the double-length set also features one album of studio material, and a second live album – almost as a "bonus" thrown in for good measure. Studio tracks include the hit "Celluloid Heroes", plus "Here Comes Yet Another Day", "Maximum Constipation", "Unreal Reality", "Hot Potatoes", "Motorway", and "Supersonic Rocket Ship" – and live cuts include "Skin & Bone", "Alcohol", "Banana Boat Song", "Lola", "Holiday", and "Mr Wonderful". LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label stereo pressing. Cover has light ringwear and some wear and fading at the spine.)

Stanislas TohonOwhaaou EP ... LP
Hot Casa (France), Late 80s. New Copy ... $29.99 32.99
Four rare tracks from Cotonou singer Stanislas Tohon – all originally issued only as rare singles, and brought together here as a package that represents some of the first global circulation of this work outside his scene! The music is from that time when contemporary electronic modes were percolating nicely with African styles – so that there's a clubby vibe to all tracks, with elements that tie the music nicely to some of the cultural criss-crossing that was taking place on the Paris scene of the time! The sounds are an evolution of earlier modes explored on labels like Jive or Celluloid – and titles include "Owhaaou", "Mi Tchinker", "Zeimdjan (radio edit)", and "Magnifirec". ✨✧ Rosa Barba & Chad TaylorIn a Perpetual Now of Instantaneous Visibility ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2021. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Drummer Chad Taylor is one of the most versatile performers we know – a drummer who can move easily between a variety of different settings, always finding the right touch for the right moment! Yet here, Taylor may be in one of his most unique settings to date – improvising on two long duets with Rosa Barba – an artist and filmmaker, and a musician who combines her talents here by playing cello, but with a celluloid bow – literally making music with the texture of film, as she slowly bows her instrument on these long, spacious lines that are matched with equally careful, sonorous work from Taylor on the drums! Chad is much more sonic than rhythmic throughout – really sounding wonderful as he brings all these new colors to his palette – on the two long improvisations on the set. CD

✨✧ Zazou BikayeMr Manager ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1985. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
80s Afro grooves, recorded in Belgium – given a nice twist by the Crammed Discs label, which was one of the first to really open up African styles with more European elements! Bony Bikaye handles vocals, and Hector Zazou plays plenty of keyboards and adds in beat – so there's an electro-styled groove to most cuts, in a mode that's similar to some of the New Africa material on Celluloid Records from the same time! The remaining member of the group handles lots of saxophone solos – but the trio also get some studio help that includes more saxophone from Marc Hollander. Titles include "Angel", "Mr Manager", "Nostalgie", and "Soki Akei". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MagmaKohntarkosz ... LP
A&M, 1974. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A set of extended tracks from French powerhouse Magma, but one that burns with intensity throughout – thanks not just to the killer drum work of group members Christian Vander on drums and Jannink Top on bass (with both on keyboards as well) – but also to the presence of legendary guitarist Brian Godding, whose sounds on the album really set the whole thing on fire! Magma already had a great keyboard and drum groove going on with previous records – but the presence of Godding here really sends things over the top – as, again, the group show that their instrumentation can deliver far more than their vocals – on extended titles that include "Kohntarkosz", "Ork Alarm", and "Coltrane Sundia". ✨✧ StimelaFire, Passion, Ecstasy (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Gallo/Tidal Waves, 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A sweet 80s groover from the South African scene – a set that makes great use of drum machine rhythms and keyboards, but at a level that's nicely warmed up by the group's vocals! There's plenty of elements here that link up with that moment when electric African material was getting wider circulation in the Northern Hemisphere, thanks to work by labels like Celluloid or Jive – and although this set never got hat sort of larger exposure, it's right up there with some of the best South African soul of the time! Titles include "Mind Games", "Right On Time", "Fire Passion Ecstasy", "Where Did We Go Wrong", and "Say Say No". LP, Vinyl record album
