Paul BleyCloser ... CD
ESP, 1966. New Copy .... $6.99 15.99
Possibly the first true moment of genius from Paul Bley – a key indie standout after a few years working for bigger American labels! By the time of this early ESP album, Paul Bley was no stranger to the American scene – having recorded a few records for different labels in the 50s, and making some surprise appearances on other sessions in the early part of the 60s. But by the time of this mid 60s set, Bley was really coming into his own – working in a style that would have a huge influence on the style of jazz piano for the next few decades, and which was one of the first strong statements of modernism from the Canadian scene. Here, he's working with Steve Swallow on bass and Barry Altschul on percussion in a trio format, working through a great batch of tracks by then wife Carla – like "Ida", "Start", "Closer", "Batterie", and "Sideways In Mexico" – as well as versions of Ornette Coleman's "Crossroads", Annette Peacock's "Cartoon", and his own "Figfoot".
(Newly remastered digipack edition.)

Paul BleyRamblin' (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
BYG/Sunspots (Italy), 1966/1969. New Copy Gatefold .... $9.99 18.99
One of Bley's best records from the 60's, and a great session recorded in Rome with Barry Altschul on drums and Mark Levinson on bass. We think of this era in Bley's career as sort of his middle period, after some important time spent with Ornette, one of the few pianists Coleman ever used, and Jimmy Giuffre, as we as Sonny Rollins, all of whose influence had made an impact on Bley, as a performer, writer and leader. The playing is wide open, but with a keen sense of group interplay and a wonderful dynamic between the three, a post free sensibility that was very progressive but never too noisy or oblique. The tracks include Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin", Annette Peacock's "Both", Carla Bley's "Ida Lupino" and "Albert's Love Theme", and Bley's own "Mazatalon".
(Comes in a cool 5" gatefold reissue package just like the original LP.)

Art Farmer — Sing Me Softly Of The Blues ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1965. New Copy .... $15.99
A sublime little set – one of Art Farmer's seminal quartet recordings from the mid 60s, and a blend of modern lyricism with an ease and economy that's hardly ever been matched again! There's a careful, measured style here that's really tremendous – one that's never too sleepy or lazy with its approach, and which almost seems to carry on the modes of expression first begun by Jimmy Giuffre in the 50s – although in completely different ways! The group features Pete LaRoca on drums, Steve Kuhn on piano, and Steve Swallow on bass – but it's Art's effortless trumpet solos that really make the album sparkle, as they drift over the top of the album's hip original tunes, written by Carla Bley and LaRoca. Titles include "Ad Infinitum", "Petite Bell", "Tears", and "One For Majid".

Monica Zetterlund — Monica Zetterlund ... CD
Universal (Norway), 1967. New Copy .... $14.99
One of the grooviest sets ever recorded by Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund – a cool late 60s album that has some really wonderful songs! At some level, Monica's still very firmly in jazz vocal territory – but she's also letting in strands of hipper 60s pop work, in a mode that's similar to some of Blossom Dearie's best work from the same period. Not surprisingly, the album's got a great version of Dearie's classic "Sweet Georgie Fame", as well as Swedish readings of Carla Bley's "Ida Lupino", Steve Kuhn's "Memory", and the tracks "A Man & A Woman", "Bachianas Brasileiras", "Alfie", and "Quietly There".

Peter Lemer Quintet — Local Colour ... CD
New Copy .... 12.99 Around May 28, 2013
One of the most far-reaching sets of UK jazz we've heard from the mid 60s – the recording debut of pianist Peter Lemer, working here in a quintet that also features a young John Surman! The leadoff track is a version of Carla Bley's great "Ictus" – and the style of the work definitely echoes that early 60s generation that Bley was a part of – a darker, more angular approach to modernism than previous years – yet still without the completely unbridled freedoms to come. Most titles are fairly elliptical – circling around a specific territory of tones and rhythms at the core, while some of the other players open up in freer solos – and other players in the group include Nisar Ahmad Khan on tenor, Tony Reeves on bass, and John Hiseman on drums. Surman plays baritone, soprano sax, and bass clarinet – and titles include "Carmen", "In The Out", "Enahenado", "Flowville", "City", and "Ictus".

new Charlie Haden — Ballad Of The Fallen ... LP
ECM, 1983. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $8.99 Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest records that Charlie Haden ever did, and a record that stands as sort of a bookend to his Liberation Music album on Impulse. As with that record, he's got a large group on here, and also like that one, he's playing a batch of tracks that have a definite political bent. Players include Don Cherry, Carla Bley, Dewey Redman, Paul Motian, Jim Pepper, and Michael Mantler; and tracks include "Ballad Of The Fallen", "Too Late", "La Pasionaria", and "The People United Will Never Be Defeated". The sound's a little bit less harsh than his Impulse recording, but it's no less impassioned, and the record's a very emotional batch of music.
(Cover has a promo sticker, light wear, and some aging.)

new Paul BleyBarrage ... CD
ESP, 1964. New Copy .... $6.99 15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A blasting barrage of sound from Paul Bley – a fierce session that's right up there with the most dynamic ESP work of the 60s – and quite different from some of Bley's more introspective music! The group here is a quintet – with bold work from Marshall Allen on alto sax and Dewey Johnson on trumpet – both working in the frontline with almost Ayler-like energy. Remaining players include the great Eddie Gomez on bass and Milford Graves on drums – romping together through a set of compelling Carla Bley compositions, including "And Now The Queen", "Walking Woman", "Ictus", "Barrage", and "Batterie".

new Gary Burton — Genuine Tong Funeral ... LP
RCA, 1968. Used .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words", A Genuine Tong Funeral is an extended piece written by Carla Bley, and performed by the Burton quartet with help from a larger group that includes Steve Lacy, Gato Barbieri, Michael Mantler, and Bley herself. As such, the album's probably the most ambitious one that Burton ever recorded during the 60s – never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from his other sides for RCA. It also makes it one of his best, too – as the record has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley, never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem".
(Orange label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

new Jimmy Giuffre 3 — Thesis ... LP
Verve, 1961. Used Gatefold .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff from Jimmy Giuffre! This record captures him at a perfect turning point in his career – after his initial piano-less experiments on Atlantic, but before the totally free work that graced his later years. The group is his trio with Paul Bley on piano and Steve Swallow on bass – and the tracks are angular modernism carried to its most perfect realization. Titles include "Ictus", "Carla", "Sonic", "Whirrr", and "The Gamut".
(US pressing. Vinyl has a couple of light clicks. Cover has some wear, some stains, a bent corner, and partially split top and bottom seams.)
