A stone 70s classic from Carlos Santana's lesser-known brother – a set that effortlessly brings together Latin and soul, often with the same sort of vibe as the Coke Escovedo records on Mercury from the same time! Jorge plays guitar, but lead vocals are from Richard Bean (of Malo and Sapo fame) – often in a sweetly crackling style that's kind of a smoother 70s update of Latin Soul modes from a few years before. Tunes are all lively, with nice hooks – never too uptempo, and carried off with a jazzy edge on most numbers. Titles include "Sandy", "Seychells", "Nobody's Perfect", "Love The Way", "We Were There", and "Tonight You're Mine".

Chicago salsa, unlike more nationally popular styles, was rooted in the city's rich Puerto Rican community. They cover material adapted from traditionals and more, done with less pan-Caribbean derived sounds than the Cuban-rooted salseros of NYC and Miami. As fondly remembered as the players of the Chicago salsa scene are by the older Puerto Rican community, records by Orquestas La Justicia, La Solucion, Juventad Tipica '78, Tipica Leal '79 and others are terribly hard to find. Not only has Numero managed to compile a terrific batch of songs, the sound quality is impeccable, too! Funky madness – and one of the greatest funky instrumental albums ever! This one's so rare that only a few funk collectors have it in their collection – but it's a totally massive bit of funk that's way more than just plain "rare" (which can sometimes also mean snoozy for collectors!) Malcolm's a funky bandleader from Kingston, Jamaica – and he's got an approach that's solidly rooted in American funk, but which also has slight (very slight) touches of Carribean rhythms. The record's not really reggae or rocksteady, but it's got a messed up groove that works perfectly – as the sharp funky instrumental tunes crack out with these odd jagged edges, or weirdly paced rhythms that make them even more compelling. A wonderful record, and way past the usual funky instrumental album. Just about every cut is excellent – and titles include "Bustin Outta The Ghetto", "Funky Junction", "Move With The Beat", "Track Full Of Soul", "Pound For Pound", and "Rockin In My Pocket".
