Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Eric Dolphy, et al — Newport Rebels ... LP
Candid, 1960. Very Good+ .... $38.99
A classic early 60s session for Candid Records – put together by a group that includes Charles Mingus, Max Roach, and a host of other musicians who were working here as "Newport Rebels" – by setting up the Jazz Artists Guild Festival as a protest against the increasingly commercialized Newport date! And for the record, the group definitely live up to their name – really shaking off the easier modes popularized at the Newport festival, and coming across with a style that's much more modern, firey, and righteous! Other artists include Abbey Lincoln on vocals, Booker Little on trumpet, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Eric Dolphy on saxophone, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone – and titles include a great rendition of "Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do" – plus 2 other great originals, "Cliff Walk" by Booker Little and "Mysterious Blues" by Mingus.
(Barnaby reissue pressing, from the 70s.)

Various — Bossa Nova Love Affair ... CD
Candid (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. New Copy .... $9.99 11.98
Brazilian grooves old and new – a really surprising selection of work from the Candid and Choice record labels – showing a commitment to bossa that we never expected! Most of the tracks here are recent vintage – recorded in the past decade or so, and mixed with a few older gems – and all have an approach that's heavy on the jazz we expect from Candid, yet which also serves up the goods in a style that's every bit what we might expect from a Brazilian-based label! Vocals are mostly in English, but sometimes in Portuguese – and instrumentation is mostly acoustic, with a fair bit of percussion and guitar that really help drive home the Brazilian flavor of the tunes. Titles include "Arrastao" by Monica Vasconcelos, "In The Still Of The Night" by Clare Teal, "Blue Moon" by Jacqui Dankworth, "I Concentrate On You" by Stacey Kent, "The Gentle Rain" by Irene Kral, "Beatrice" by Ingrid Laubrock, "Com A Perno No Mundo" by Guinga, and "Para Raio" by Nois4.

new Benny Bailey — Big Brass ... CD
Candid (UK), 1960. New Copy .... $9.99 11.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the few early albums as a leader cut by trumpeter Benny Bailey – a tremendous talent, finally getting his due! Bailey is one of the great unsung talents of jazz, and he's always made top-shelf work – from his early days with Quincy Jones, to his later years as an American expatriot, recording for European labels like Ego and MPS. This rare early session is one of the few recorded for the super-hip Candid label – and it features Bailey's trumpet at the head of a tight combo that includes Phil Woods on alto sax and bass clarinet, Julius Watkins on French Horn, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and rhythm from Buddy Catlett on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Despite the "big brass" title, there's no horn section here – and instead, most of the numbers have that sharp-edged modern sound we associate with Candid – with Watkins horn being the only other brass instrument, alongside the lighter lines of Woods and Spann. Titles include "Hard Sock Dance", "Tipsy", "Please Say Yes", and "Maud's Mood".

new Charles Mingus — Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus ... LP
Candid, 1960. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title's an apt one, because after frustrations experienced working for Columbia and other labels, Mingus is finally allowed the freedom here to present his own ideas in all their unfettered glory – working with a bracingly tight quartet that features Eric Dolphy on alto and bass clarinet and Ted Curson on trumpet! A number of the tracks here are familiar in their titles from other records, but the versions here stretch out far longer – moving past 10 minutes on 2 of the album's 4 tracks, and approaching that limit on others. But even more noticeable is the spareness of the sound – as the smaller group versions allow for a tremendous amount of solo space, really letting the focus fall on the two horn players, with the bass of Mingus and drums of Dannie Richmond shading in the space behind and beyond. Titles include "Folk Forms No. 1", "All the Things You Could Be By Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother", and the original uncensored version of "Faubus Fables".

Candid, Early 60s. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A hip collection of tracks recorded during the early 60s years of the Candid label – all of them great, and all of them exclusive to this LP! The album does a great job of digging into the modern jazz underground of the early 60s – and titles include "R&R" by Charles Mingus, "Oh Yeah Oh Yeah" by Kenny Dorham and Benny Bailey, "Lord Lord Am I Ever Gonna Know" by Lucky Thompson, and "Father & Son" by Cal Massey.

new Otis Spann — Otis Spann Is The Blues ... CD
Candid, 1960. Used .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
Otis may be the blues, but he's not alone either – as he's working here in duet formation with Robert Lockwood – recorded in a really rootsy setting that's got a very down-home feel! Otis is on piano, Lockwood is on guitar, and both players sing – alternating vocals from track to track in a batch of tunes that are all originals. Titles include "Worried Life Blues", "Great Northern Stomp", "Otis In The Dark", "The Hard Way", "Take A Little Walk With Me", and "Beat Up Team".

Toshiko Akiyoshi & Charlie Mariano — Toshiko Mariano Quartet (Takt) ... CD
Takt/Columbia (Japan), 1963. New Copy .... $34.99
A wonderful album from the team of Toshiko Akioshi and Charlie Mariano – a set that was only ever issued in Japan, and which we like a fair bit more than their better-known US album for Candid! The group here is the same as that one – with Charlie Mariano on alto sax, Toshiko Akioshi on piano, Eugene Chirico on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – but the sound is a lot more focused, and often a bit more swinging – with some especially great emphasis on Mariano's magnificent tone – nicely rough-edged at this point in his career, but still strongly inside – with none of the overindulgence of later years. Charlie cuts through the tunes brilliantly – and Toshiko's got a great mix of bop and modern tones in her piano work. And even though the first half of the set list is tunes from West Side Story, the quartet make them cook like you've never heard before – really taking off with a new sort of energy that's totally great! Titles include "Tonight", "America", "Cool", "Plaisir D'Amour", "Malaguena", and "Oleo".
(Special on-demand CD from Sony Japan – done in very limited quantities, as a way of reissuing these rare jazz gems – and still with full color artwork!)

Steve Karmen — What Do You Say To A Naked Lady? ... LP
United Artists, 1970. Sealed .... $4.99
A very strange little record – composed for a very strange film directed by Allen "Candid Camera" Funt – in which people are surprised by a nude woman, and have to react accordingly. There's a lot of tunes on here that have an almost Harper's Bizarre feel – that kind of "sweet, but dark inside" style that we love from late 60s rock albums on Warner Brothers. The mood changes from track to track, to fit the situations of the scenes – and there's plenty of great tunes on here with sweet or groovy vocals and a hip easy soft pop style. Titles include "Kids", "Too Bad You Can't Read My Mind", "Pardon Me", "Let's Get Down To It", "What Do You Say To A Naked Lady", and "Hail To Humanity".

Booker Little — Booker Little & Friend (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1961. New Copy .... $15.99
A fantastic sextet session recorded in 1961, shortly before Booker Little's death – and filled with all the promise and power he ever packed into his playing! There's a sharp, angular groove to many of the numbers here – that mix of modern and hardbop that was cresting best in the early 60s Blue Note generation – and which echoes some of the work that Little had done with Max Roach in the years before this date. The lineup's filled with great players to help Book realize his strongest musical vision – Julian Priester on trombone, George Coleman on tenor, Don Friedman on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – and although the set's issued on the sometimes-staid Bethlehem label, it's got all the sharper edges of an early 60s date on a label like Impulse or Candid! Titles include "Matilde", "Booker's Blues", "Forward Flight", and "Victory and Sorrow". CD features two bonus tracks – alternate versions of "Looking Ahead".

Max Roach — Deeds Not Words ... LP
Riverside/OJC, 1958. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 15.98
A seminal set from Max Roach – the start of his more righteous stretch in jazz, as you might guess from the title of the album! At some level, the record's got a bit of the feel of the post-Clifford Brown Mercury years from Roach – but at another, it's stretching out towards the directions Max would explore fully on the Candid, Impulse, and Fantasy labels in the 60s – an approach to hardbop that often really pushes its limits – not content to simply set up solos for the players, and instead moving with a much more forceful energy overall! Group members include Booker Little on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor, Ray Draper on tuba, and Art Davis on bass – and the lack of a piano makes for a very exciting sound! The album's got 2 great originals by Bill Lee – "Jodie's Cha-Cha" and "Deeds Not Words" – plus Draper's classic "Filide", and the groundbreaking "Conversation" – a very cool solo by Roach on the drums!

Max Roach — Lift Every Voice and Sing ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $15.99
A beautiful blend of jazz, voices, and soul – a landmark record in Max Roach's vocal experimental tradition, and a fitting companion piece to Billy Harper's classic Capra Black album – an equally soulful blend of styles! Like Capra Black, this set features Harper's sharp and soulful tenor up against a choir of voices – blowing on hard-hitting soul jazz arrangements handled by Max Roach, of the style he used on some of his classic early 60s sides for Impulse and Candid. The tracks are long, Harper's in top form, and the group also includes Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet and George Cables on piano – ultra hip cats, always! Cuts include "Motherless Child", "Let Thy People Go", and "Troubled Waters.

new Charles Mingus — Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus (jewel case version) ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title's exploding with Mingus, and the album is too – a completely classic effort for Impulse Records that's easily one of Charles' best of the 60s! Things are reigned in somewhat from the Mingus years at Atlantic or Candid, but the sound is still great – almost more focused than before – with a sense of all the best qualities that Charles was finding in his music, laid out back to back in near-perfect formation! The group's full of great players – with reeds from Eric Dollphy, Booker Ervin, and Jerome Richardson – all of whom really contribute some deep tones to the album – and Jaki Byard's on piano, making one of his key Mingus appearances of the 60s. Titles include the massive "Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul" (the virtual Mingus "trademark" tune), plus the tracks "Celia", "Hora Decubitus", and "II B.S.". Plus, the CD features the bonus track "Freedom" – not on the original LP!

new Frank Minion — Soft Land Of Make Believe ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1959/1960. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest jazz vocal albums you'll ever find! Frank Minion sings this suite of tracks billed as an "Introduction To Black Opium Street", and he puts the music together with little recitations in between the tracks, so that the whole thing sounds like one of the great Langston Hughes jazz albums from the same period. Minion's singing voice is in the same rich-toned tradition as singers like Johnny Hartman, but his speaking voice is raw and very soulful – and he gets more than able backing by a great set of players that includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Roland Alexander on tenor and flute, Dannie Richmond on drums, and Paul Chambers on bass. The whole album sounds more like a rare session on Candid than it does the usual stuff on Bethlehem – and it's a surprisingly hip album that still holds up well over the years! Titles include "Oddsville USA", "Bongo Blues", "Autobiography Of A Musician", "Watermelon", "Flamenco Sketches", "Laughing Boy", and "Later".

David Bowie at his most sinister for the 70s – a landmark set that combines the harder rocking sound of the Ziggy Stardust years with the more sophisticated theatrics of Aladdin Sane – in a style that features some of the darkest, most political work of Bowie's career! There's a depth to the record that goes way beyond the silly, sensational cover image – and there's also a sonic complexity that's wonderful too – a songs slide into each other with a deftness that never fails to amaze us! Candido — Candido In Indigo ... LP
ABC, Late 50s. Very Good .... $29.99
Candido cut sooo many great Latin records over the years, spanning a wide range of styles, we have a hard time deciding which we love the best. We like to think this may be his best album from the early part of his career, specifically because it features the master conga player amidst a tight jazz lineup, who leave him plenty of room to solo and just plain get down doing his thing. Dick Hyman's on organ, Joe Puma's on guitar, and Ernie Royal's on trumpet, with George Duvivier and Charlie Persip in the rhythm section. 8 tracks in all, including "Afro Blue", "Caravan", "Softly But Blue", "Blue Lou", "Blue Prelude", "Bongo Baby", "Blue Dirge" and "Candido Cocktail".

Candido — Dancin' & Prancin' (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Salsoul/Big Break (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $14.99
A key chapter in the rich long legacy of Candido on record – a set that pushes the percussion maestro strongly into the disco generation – with wonderful results that are still massively strong all these many years later! Candido had always been one of the funkiest conga players around – especially as his music moved into the 70s – but here, he really takes off with some sublime disco arrangements – full clubby grooves that are some of the best Salsoul sounds of the time, yet which still leave plenty of room for Candi's congas! The congas participate in the rhythms at every level – and often take on a nice solo spotlight too – and all tracks are nice and long, with killers that include a club remake of "Thousand Finger Man", plus "Dancin & Prancin", "Jingo", and "Rock & Shuffle". CD features a massive amount of bonus tracks – more than on the album – with gems from singles that include "Jingo (original 12" version)", "Thousand Finger Man (12" ext version)", "Jingo (Shep Pettibone mix)", "Thousand Finger Man (single)", "Jingo (single)", and "Jingo (inst)".

Candido — Drum Fever ... LP
Polydor, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of Candido's funkiest albums! The record's got a similar sound to Candido's great albums for Blue Note and Solid State – with short, hard funky tunes that have a really great 70s edge! Chico O'Farrill did the arrangements, and the record chops along nicely with some very funky tracks that feel like they were lifted from a blacksploitation soundtrack – conga mixed with great keyboards, wah wah guitar, and tight blasts of horns in just the right bits! The whole thing's a killer – filled with heavy funky 45-type numbers – and tracks include "Soulwanco", "Succulent", "Yolanda", "Candido's Funk", "Kushy", "Sultry", and "Mighty Mouth". Very nice!

Candido — Thousand Finger Man ... LP
Solid State, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Stone lost Latin funk! This is Candido's rarest – and it's a killer batch of conga-heavy grooves, recorded in the late 60s for Solid State, and featuring a very groovy set of mod Latin arrangements by Joe Cain. The band features organ, guitar, bass, horns, and some upfront conga solos from Candido. Tracks are longer than usual for this sort of album – and there's a lot of strange elements floating through the tracks, in a very nice way! Titles include "Thousand Finger Man", which has some especially firey conga breakdowns, plus "Jump Back", "Soul Limbo", "Tony's Theme (from Lady In Cement)", and "Come On Choo Choo Train".

Schifrin was in Diz's group at the time, playing piano and contributing fantastic Latin-tinged arrangements that gave the band a whole new life. Other players on this session include Candido, Leo Wright, Julius Watkins, and Willie Rodriguez – and the tracks include "Africana", "Blues", and "Panamerica".

Dizzy Gillespie — Melody Lingers On ... LP
Limelight, 1967. Very Good .... $6.99
A great little album of short groovy cuts from Dizzy – and actually quite hard to find on vinyl! Despite a title that sounds a bit flowery, the grooves are nice and hard – and Dizzy's playing here with a combo that includes James Moody, Kenny Barron, Billy Butler, and Candido. The sound isn't as funky as the records that Dizzy would later cut for Perception, but it's getting pretty close at times – especially on the tunes that have a nice Latin soul feel. Titles include "Summer Samba", "Bang Bang", "Mas Que Nada", "Tequila", "Winter Samba", and "Get That Money Blues".

new Jimmy Hughes — Something Extra Special – The Complete Volt Recordings 1968 to 1971 (with unreleased tracks) ... CD
Volt/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used .... $9.99
Amazing stuff – an already-great album on CD, but with bonus cuts from singles, and a dozen unissued tracks! The core album is Something Special – the only Stax album cut by singer Jimmy Hughes – an artist with a huge impact on southern soul in the 60s, but one who never got the push his career deserved, probably because he kept bouncing from label to label! The style here is kind of an update of the groove that Jimmy first recorded for Vee Jay and Atco – a more refined approach to bluesy soul that's somewhat in the same space that Stax were hitting with Johnny Taylor at the time. Backings are sometimes nicely chunky, almost funky – and tunes are produced by Al Jackson, Al Bell, and Charles Chalmers – all good candidates for a set like this. Titles include "I Like Everything About You", "Let 'Em Down Baby", "Lay It On The Line", "Sweet Things You Do", "I'm Not Ashamed To Beg Or Plead", and "It's All Up To You". Bonus tracks are all mighty nice too – and include "Too Old To Play", "Leave Us Alone", "Your Love Is Important To Me", "Did You Forge", "You Done Fed Me Sumpin", "Don't You Know I'm All Alone", and "I Worry About You".

Various — Afro Blue Vol 2 – The Roots & Rhythms Of Jazz ... CD
Blue Note, 1998. New Copy .... $8.99
Despite the "primitivist" sort of leanings you might expect from the "roots" in the title, this is actually a nice batch of tracks from the catalogs of Blue Note and World Pacific during the 60's – and they're all jazz tracks that have a slight Africanist influence, but which are certainly not African tracks themselves. The 13 tracks include loads of nice hard to find ones, including "Blue Dashiki" by Blue Mitchell, "Appointment in Ghana" by the Jazz Crusaders, "Marabi" by Cannonball Adderley, "Ghana Spice" Candido, "Zulu" by Randy Weston, "Zambia" by Lee Morgan, and "Follow Me To Africa" by Solomon Ilori & His Afro Drum Ensemble.

Various — Look Into The Flower – Trip On Psychedelic Grooves With Blue Note ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $11.99
A bit trippy, but also pretty darn funky – a wonderfully groove-conscious assortment of work from Blue Note and some other EMI-related labels – most of it from the tail end of the 60s and the hip start of the 70s! There's a bit less psychedelia here than you might guess from the title, but that's ok with us – as the track list is wonderful – and features some of the hippest, most mature grooves coming out at the time – a blend of cuts that ranges from righteous soul jazz to the soaring productions of Larry Mizell! Titles include "Howling For Judy" by Jeremy Steig, "Streets Of Calcutta" by Ananda Shankar, "Light My Fire" by John Andrews Tartaglia, "Wind Parade" by Donald Byrd, "Hallelujah I'm Coming Home" by Candido, "Acid Pot Or Pills" by Horace Silver, "Music Is My Sanctuary" by Gary Bartz, "Harlem River Drive" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Cristo Redentor" by Donald Byrd, and "Love For Sale" by Gene Harris. 12 tracks in all!

Candido — Conga Soul ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
An excellent early session from Candido – and one of his first to move from straighter Latin into a much groovier vein! The session's done in collaboration with Lalo Schifrin – who was also working for Roulette at the time – and it's got a style that links Candido's older 50s-styled Latin conga work with some of the more fluid grooves that Schifrin was just beginning to forge at the time. There's a very strong jazz sensibility to the album – with Lalo on piano, Charlie Persip on drums, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, and some really great baritone solos from Jay Cameron – whose playing gives the album an especially soulful sound. Titles include "Conga Soul", "Toccata", "The Champ", "New Secrets", "Dark Eyes", and "Long Long Summer".

new Art Farmer — Something You Got ... LP
CTI, 1977. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice little funky album from Art – one that we might have been suspicious about at first, but which sits better and better with us as the years go by. Art's working here in the frontline with Yusef Lateef – another unlikely candidate for a record like this – and the pair get some strong backing from the band of Dave Matthews, who manages to provide just the right blend of tight arrangements and jazz funk, so that each player gets plenty of room to soar, but the whole album sticks in a nice smooth groove. Includes a soaring version of Chick Corea's "Spain", a slow funk take on Chris Kenner's "Something You Got", and the cuts "Flute Song", "Hombre Del Sol", "Sauhade", and "Sandu".

new Dinah Washington — After Hours With Miss D ... LP
EmArcy, Early 50s. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Dinah's in a perfect setting here – one that gets more jazz out of her style than other records at the time! The "after hours" setting has Dinah singing with a relaxed jazz combo – one that features Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Paul Quinichette on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet, and Junior Mance on piano – as well as some other nice touches, like congas from Candido, and a bit of organ work from Jackie Davis! The tunes still have the slightly bluesy feel of Dinah's other work, but are more jazz-based in their phrasing and presentation – and titles include "A Foggy Day", "Bye Bye Blues", "Am I Blue", "Blue Skies", and "Love For Sale".

new Various — Beginner's Guide To Latin Jazz (3CD Box Set) ... CD
Nascente (UK), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not so much an introduction to Latin jazz, as it a wonderful collection of Latin-tinged tunes from the mighty catalog of Blue Note Records – and not just New York and Cuban Latin grooves, but also a fair bit of bossa nova and Brazilian sounds too! The 3CD package is overflowing with goodness – and titles include a range of killer Blue Note gems from the 60s – plus related cuts from labels like Capitol, Liberty, and World Pacific. The groove changes nicely throughout the set, and the instrumentation is superb – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Sandalia Dela" by Duke Pearson, "Chitlins Con Carne" by Kenny Burrell, "Loie" by Ike Quebec, "Samba De Orfeu" by Charlie Rouse, "Bossa For Baby" by Hank Mobley, "South Of The Border" by Lou Donaldson, "Rhapsodia Del Maravilloso" by Sabu Martinez, "Minors Holiday" by Kenny Dorham, "Congalere" by Horace Parlan, "Ghana" by Donald Byrd, "Latin Fever" by Jack Costanzo, "No Problem" by Jerome Richardson, "Girl From Ipanema" by Lou Rawls, "Rojo" by Bobby Hutcherson, and "Thousand Finger Man" by Candido. 38 tracks in all!

new Various — Double Shot Of Soul – Funky Los Angeles Soul From The Vaults Of The Double Shot & Whiz Labels 1967 – 70 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lost soul from a massively overlooked source – the mighty LA indie Double Shot Records, best known for their fuzzy rock classics, but also a hotbed of tripped-out soul! Given that Double Shot's 2 biggest artists of the late 60s were Count Five ("Psychotic Reaction") and Brenton Wood ("Oogum Boogum Song"), you can imagine that the label would be equally well suited to handle mod 60s guitars and sweet soul vocals – and on most of the tracks on this set, you'll be hearing them at the same time! The set's a really massive batch of tunes – a wonderful discovery to our ears, as we'd only ever heard the odd rare single on the label, and had no idea that there was so much great work – nor that it would sound so great! The CD features a total of 26 tracks in all, pulled from the Double Shot singles of the late 60s – with tracks that include "Push Me Baby" and "Jelly" by The Bagdads, "What Is Soul" and "The International Love Song" by The Real Thing, "Four Piece Funky Nitty Gritty Junky Band" and "Everybody's Got A Hang Up" by Bobby Freeman, "Gotta Keep Talkin" and "Coming In Out Of The Rain" by Maurice Rodgers, "The Neck" and "Trouble" by Kent & The Candidates, "Sugar Sugar" by Shirley, and "Trouble" by Foxy.

new Martin Denny — Taste Of Honey/Another Taste Of Honey ... CD
Liberty/Vocalion (UK), 1962/1964. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
Back to back gems from Martin Denny – two albums on a single CD! Taste Of Honey is a great later moment from Martin Denny – a set that gave him a big 60s hit in a sweet version of "Taste of Honey"! Denny approaches the tune with all the great mellow moods that Bobby Scott intended – none of the too-fast styles of Hirt, and instead the slow-moving rhythms that work perfectly for the blue undercurrents on the piano. Other tunes follow in a similarly nice blend – still a bit exotic, but almost showing more of a vibes/piano/percussion mix that seems to be borrowed from George Shearing or Cal Tjader – one that we approve of highly! Titles include "Route 66", "Exodus", "I'm In A Dancing Mood", "Black Orchid", "Take Five", and "Taste Of Honey". The second albums is a sweet follow up to Martin Denny's Taste Of Honey album – one that's got a great blend of piano, vibes, and percussion – all used in a way that's almost more jazz-like than some of Denny's earlier work! The formula works great to transform a host of 50s and 60s tunes – and titles include "Volare", "Cool", "Bijou", "Harlem Nocturne", "Satin Doll", "Anniversary Song", "Like Young", "Blue Carousel", and "Theme From The Manchurian Candidate".

new Various — Salsoul Records Story ... CD
Salsoul/Gold Legion, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A sweet collection of grooves from the legendary Salsoul label – easily one of the hippest imprints on the New York scene of the 70s! Salsoul's grooves go way beyond the usual disco – crafted with roots that go back to soul and salsa of the earlier part of the decade – and often mixed to perfection with a sound that holds up strongly, even on a crowded dancefloor! This package features ten of the best-remembered gems from the label – most in long mixes that echo their strong popularity as 12" single – titles that include "Doctor Love" by First Choice, "Runaway" by The Salsoul Orchestra with Loleatta Holloway, "Jingo" by Candido, "Dreamin" by Loleatta Holloway, "By The Way You Dance" by Bunny Sigler, "Love Is You" by Carol Williams, "Dance A Little Bit Closer" by Charo, "I Love New York" by Metropolis, and "Rio De Janeiro" by Gary Criss.

new Elvin Jones — Coalition (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 Out Of Stock
A stunning early set as a leader from Elvin Jones – both a tremendous demonstration of the free energy he let loose after the passing of John Coltrane, and a set that's also still got some key Coltrane-esque elements! As with other Jones albums to follow, Elvin's got some key reedmen on hand – George Coleman on tenor, and Frank Foster on tenor, alto, and bass clarinet – both given plenty of room to run around with long solos on the open space of the record – yet without ever blowing off their heads as much as some of the younger players who'd work with Jones. There's no piano at all on the set – just the rock-slid bass of Wilbur Little, and additional congas from Candido next to Elvin's drums. The tracks have a haunting quality that mixes modal grooving with spare moments, and titles include "Simone", "5/4 Thing", "Shinjitu", and a nice version of "Yesterdays".

new Billy Taylor — Cross-Section ... CD
Prestige/OJC, Early 50s. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
A great record – or half-great, as the case may be! One part of this album features Billy with his standard trio of Earl May and Percy Brice, playing mellow piano trio versions of tracks that include "Tune For Tex", "Goodbye", "Biddy's Beat", and "Eddie's Theme". Those cuts are fine, but the real strength of the album lies on the last 4 cuts – all killer Latin jazz numbers cut with a rhythm section that includes Machito, Jose Mangual, Charlie Smith, and Uba Nieto. The added conga, bongos, and timbales really make the tracks groove – and you'll find yourself coming back to "I Love To Mambo", "Mambo Azul", "Early Morning Mambo", and "Candido" more than you will the rest of the record.
