Buddy RichBig Swing Face ... CD
Pacific Jazz, Late 60s. Used .... $4.99
Although Buddy's always been a bit laughable, he was always trying to keep his bag moving, and his band of the late 60s included some pretty darn nice players. The group on this session includes Ernie Watts and Bobby Shew, and the band wails hard and fast in a live setting with lots of tight little numbers. Tracks include "Wack Wack", "Norwegian Wood", "The Beat Goes On", and "Mexicali Nose".

Buddy RichSpeak No Evil ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good .... $4.99
One of the tightest 70s albums from Buddy Rich – a record that's got some smooth and soulful touches, and a groove that's quite different than most of his other work! Chicago soul maestro Richard Evans handled the arrangements for the record – and he's got a great way of making things groove, even with a larger groove – leaving plenty of space for key solos from players who include Jon Faddis on trumpet, Joe Farrell on tenor sax, Ross Trout on guitar, and Kenny Barron on electric piano! Most numbers are somewhat upbeat and clubby – like some of the funky fusion on the Kudu label from the time – and a few numbers feature chorus vocals from a trio of female soul singers that includes Rhetta Hughes, Vivian Cherry, and Lain Grooves. Titles include "Yearnin Learnin", "Speak No Evil", "Fight The Power", "Sneakin Up Behind You", and the great "How Long" – which features the famous "Betcha Got A Chick On The Side" sampled by Salt N Pepa!
(Cover has split seams lined with tape, a promo stamp, and a small rip.)

Zoot Sims — Zoot Sims Featuring Buddy Rich (aka Somebody Loves Me) ... LP
51 West, 1974. Very Good .... $5.99
A motherlode of great music from Zoot Sims – mid 70s recordings done for the Groove Merchant label, presented here in a late 70s package! Although Groove Merchant was mostly known for its funkier sounds, the work here is nicely back to basics for Sims – small group sessions that give him plenty of room to open up and blow – paired with players that include Lionel Hampton on vibes, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar, Teddy Wilson on piano, and Buddy Rich on drums. The sound is warm, but never sleepy – and Zoot's tenor has a nice edge on his solos that dominate most tunes. Titles include"A Summer Thing", "Somebody Loves Me", "Up A Lazy River", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", "Send In the Clowns", and "Memories Of You".

new Buddy RichMan From Planet Jazz – Recorded Live At Ronnie Scott's Club ... CD
Five Four (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Late work by jazz drum giant Buddy Rich – captured in a surprisingly energetic, firey, and sometimes funky mode at Ronnie Scott's Club in 1980! Buddy really pulled off some bright, buoyant, funk influenced work in the 70s and this set finds him at the tail end of that groove – playing with a pretty big group that includes Ernie Vantrease on piano, Wayne Pedziwiatr on bass, Ando Fusco, Jack Leibowitz, Steave Marcus and Kenny Hitchcock on saxes, Bob Coassin on lead trumpet, Roger Homefield on lead trombone, and others. Titles include "Intro/Beulah Witch", "Grand Concourse", "Blues A La 88", "Saturday Night", "Slow Funk" and the epic, 15+ minute closer "Good News".

new Buddy RichPlaytime ... LP
Argo, 1960. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure early 60s date from Buddy Rich – recorded with a very unusual group of musicians! The cover bills the group as Buddy Rich & His Buddies – a hip little combo that features some strong Chicago players, most of whom went onto greater fame, and who make the record an interesting batch of jazz numbers! Mike Mainieri's on vibes, Sam Most is on flute, John Morris is on piano, Wilbur Wynne is on guitar, and Richard Evans is on bass – and Don Goldie plays trumpet solos on a few other tracks – all in tight formation, but with a groove that's a bit different than Buddy's work on Verve a few years before. Titles include the originals "Marbles" and "Playtime" – plus "Lulu's Back In Town", "Will You Still Be Mine", and "Cheek To Cheek".
(Gray label Argo pressing, with deep groove. Cover has some heavy edge wear and splitting on the bottom seam, with some wear, light stains, and a large peeled spot on the back.)

new Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa — Burnin Beat/Original Drum Battle ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1952/1962. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
Heavy drums from this mighty pair – presented together on two classic albums! Burnin Beat is a drum-heavy spectacular that returns Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich to their big band roots – thanks to some hard-swinging arrangements from George Williams! The tracks are a bit shorter and done with a larger group than on some of the other Rich or Krupa sides for Verve – but there actually seems to be even more drum pyrotechnics here, possibly because the players' efforts are compressed into such a tight space! Production is a bit odd – with the drums so high in the mix that they sometimes come across with more treble than bass – but that really highlights some of the most inventive moments on the top of the kit as well. Titles include "Duet", "Perdido", "Evolution", "Night Train", and "Hawaiian War Chant". Original Drum Battle is a pretty darn great album – with a wonderful mix of JATP swing and strong-handed drumming by the leaders. The material was recorded at a Jazz At The Philharmonic show at Carnegie Hall in 1952, and although the main focus appears to be Krupa and Rich's drum work, there's actually some fantastic sax playing on the album – from both the alto of Willie Smith and the tenor of Flip Phillips, both of whom are at the height of their powers in this relaxed setting, working amazingly well around the bombastic drum pounding of Krupa and Rich. Tracks are long, and titles include "Idaho", "Flying Home", "Drum Boogie", "Drum Battle", and "Perdido".

Charly Antolini — In The Groove ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1972. New Copy .... $8.99
One of the funkiest records ever from Charly Antolini – the drummer who cut some mighty groovy records for MPS! This album features Charly's drums really kicking hard – actually hitting some moments that make for some tight breaks in the set, supported by instrumentation that's very much in the best MPS big band mode of the time! The mixture of heavy drums and tight horns reminds us a lot of some of the best funk from Buddy Rich – although the MPS setting here is a lot groovier – and players include Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Armin Rusch on organ, Sigi Schwab on guitar, and Ack Van Rooyen on trumpet and flugelhorn. The whole thing's jumping – an extremely propulsive little set – and titles include "Handicraft", "Punching Ball", "Gemma Ham", "Skinny", and "Scratches".

Lionel Hampton — Hamp's Big Four ... LP
Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good .... $11.99
Although Lionel Hampton's always best remembered for his storming swing days in the early 40s, we love him on records like this one – an easy open-ended straight jazz session from the 50s, with lots of room for soloing in a much more jazz-oriented vein than you'll hear on Hamp's early records. The group's a small all-star combo that features Roy Brown, Buddy Rich, and Oscar Peterson next to Hamp's vibes – and the set list includes long takes of "Midnight Sun", "That Old Black Magic", and "Blues For Norman".
(Yellow label Clef series Verve Inc pressing, with trumpeter logo and deep groove. Cover has some wear, split top and bottom seams, a partially split spine, and some staining and marker on the back.)

Jazz At The Philharmonic — Norman Granz' Jazz At The Philharmonic Volume 14 (10 inch LP) ... LP
Mercury, Early 50s. Good .... $16.99
This is the 14th in a the original 10" series of recordings at the Philharmonic. The line up on this set is pretty blistering, and includes Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young on tenor sax, William Smith on alto, Buck Clayton on trumpet, Buddy Rich on drums, Irving Ashby on guitar, Billy Hadnott on bass and Kenny Kersey on piano, all blowing nice and hard. As with others, there are just two lengthy jamming tracks: "I Surrender Dear" and "I Got Rhythm".
(Clef pressing, with trumpeter logo and deep groove. Vinyl has a click on one side. Cover has a bit of clear tape on the edges and some light wear – and a name in one corner.)

Horace Silver — Silver 'N Brass ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1975. New Copy .... $15.99
A beautifully soulful set from Horace Silver – hardly the "with brass" session you might guess from the title, and instead a well-integrated album that really showcases a new level of arranging genius from Horace! The set is heavy on hip horns – with work from Oscar Brashear, Bobby Bryant, and Tom Harrell on trumpets – plus Frank Rosolinon on trombone, Jerome Richardson on alto and soprano sax, Buddy Collette on flute, and Bob Berg on tenor – but these instruments are often wrapped up in this warmly rolling groove driven by the bass of Ron Carter and drums of Al Foster – inherently funky, but much more complicated from a rhythmic perspective – and rolling out beautifully with a really imaginative vibe! Tunes are all originals by Silver – wonderful little numbers filled with passion and life – almost painting in sound, with really rich tones and colors throughout. Titles include "The Sophisticated Hippie", "Dameron's Dance", "Barbara", "Adjustment", "Mysticism", and "Kissin Cousins".

Various — 94 Baker Street Revisited – Poptastic Sounds From The Apple Era – 1967 to 1968 ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $13.99
A rich array of underground sounds from late 60s London – most of which appear here for the first time ever! The set follows on the previous 94 Baker Street collection – and like that one, features obscure English singer/songwriters under contract to Apple – fresh talents signed up in the hopes that they'd later break big – lost to the shuffle of years amidst the misworkings of the company. Now, though, the folks at Cherry Red have done a great job of reconstructing this lost history – and have come up with a really great assortment of tracks pulled from rare demos – but mostly done at a level that's right up there with all the commercially-released British rock of the time. Most of these tracks have never been issued before – and titles include "Hold On" and "Sailing" by Joker, "You've Got A Hold On Someone" and "This Little Man Mk 1" by George Alexander, "Windy Love Affair" by Robert & Miles Priestley, "It's You" by Buddy Britten, "Any Day Now" by Coconut Mushroom, "Who Needs A King" and "Something New Every Day" by Timon, "How Does It Feel" by The Perishers, and "Kingfisher" by Barry Alexander.

Various — Here Comes The Hurt – Soul Ballads From King Records ... CD
King/Kent (UK), 1960s. New Copy .... $15.99
Heartbreaking soul from King Records – a really great side of the label's output – but one that hardly ever gets its due, given the King reputation for blues and funk! The work here is wonderful, though – every bit on a par with the best ballad soul and tear-swept tunes from the east coast indie scene of the 60s – served up with lots of slow-moving instrumentation, deep harmony vocals, and production that really seems to increase the melancholy of the music! A few names here are ones you'd not normally associate with the style, and others are great discoveries from the rich catalog of King Records – a much-needed package that's filled with rare gems! Titles include "Have No Fear" by Ricky Lyons, "Why" by James Duncan, "I Need You" by The Snapshots, "Tell the Whole World" by June Sims, "Too Much For Me To Bear" by Barbara Burton & The Messengers, "Here Comes The Hurt" by Hank Ballard, "Buddy Boy" by Charles Spurling, "Your Love Was Good For Me" by Marva Whitney, "Fran" by Thomas Bailey, "My Pillow Stays Wet" by James Duncan & The Duncan Trio, "My New Love" by Lynn Davis, and "A City Called Loneliville" by Dee Dee, Joseph, & David.

Various — London Is The Place For Me Vol 5 – Latin, Jazz, Calypso, & Highlife From Young Black London ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $22.99
London's always been one of the hippest cities in the world – but back during the postwar years, there was an especially wonderful outpouring of music on the scene – a rich array of new sounds and styles pulled from around the globe – as so many residents from crumbling British empire came to live in the UK! Musicians and listeners arrived in London with plenty of cultural baggage on hand – influences from the Caribbean, West Africa, and India too – plus other smaller scenes that once fell under the British banner, all now the fuel for the cultural fire that was happening in England! The title here tells plenty about the music being made in this newly-formed scene – bits of African highlife, Jamaican calypso, American jazz, Cuban Latin, and more – all filtered into the modernism of the 50s, and given a new twist that was decidedly urban as well. The package may well be the most impressive so far in this legendary series – and is certainly the one that moves the farthest past any sort of easy expectations or cultural conventions. Titles include "Women Police In England" by Mighty Terror, "My Sorrow" by West African Swing Stars, "Cricket Umpires" by Lord Kitchener, "Jordhu" by Caribbean Swing Band, "Trumpet Highlife" by Shake Keane, "Calypso Mambo" by George Browne, "Cuban Nightingale" by Buddy Pipp's Highlifers, "Kitch" by The Quavers, "Tabu" by Mona Baptiste, and "King Jimmy Foo Foo" by Tejan Sie with The West African Rhythm Brothers.

new Jimmy McGriff — 100% Pure Funk ... CD
Groove Merchant/LRC, 1973/1974. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bit different than you might expect from the title – but still plenty darn nice! Instead of 100% Funk, the album's more 100% Soul Jazz – some of the more 60s-oriented numbers that Jimmy McGriff recorded for Groove Merchant in the early 70s – including some of the cookers that appeared on his Black & Blues album! The vibe here is more in the mode of Jimmy's roots on Sue Records than some of his other work from later years – a mean and gritty approach to organ jazz that's filled with great rough edges – and which has Jimmy soloing strongly in the lead, alongside other players who include Von Freeman on tenor sax, George Freeman on guitar, Kenny Baron on electric piano, and Buddy Rich on drums – all of whom appear with McGriff in different groupings throughout the set. Titles include "Blues Groove (part 1)", "Soft Winds", "How Long", "Yardbird Suite", "It's You I Adore", "Harp-er", "Mocha", "Everyday I Have The Blues", and "Blues For A Broken Down Funky Old Bus".

new Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo (Onra/Buddy Sativa) — Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo ... CD
All City (Ireland), 2013. New Copy .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly spiritual collaboration between Onra and and Buddy Sativa – one that's filled with lots of rich acoustic sounds that recall the glory days of the 70s spiritual jazz scene and the post-Coltrane years on Impulse Records! Most of the music is handled just by the two musicians, working with overdubs – and laying down bits of flute, kalimba, electric piano, Arp, harp, vibes, bass, and plenty of percussion – a very heady brew that stretches out with a deep, organic vibe that's mighty nice! Despite it's contemporary origin, the set feels a lot like some lost indie pressing from the 70s – with tracks that include "Wandering Wondering", "Endangered Species", "Universe Is Love", "UFO Paradise", "Dark Karma", and "Honey Hash Rose".

new Lester Young — Mean To Me (Lester Young/Pres & Sweets) ... LP
Norgran, Early 50s. Used 2LP .... $3.99 Out Of Stock
2 classic 50s sessions – on a 2LP 80s set! On the first self-titled abum, Prez plays nice easy-going solos with a combo that includes Jessie Drakes on trumpet, Gildo Mahones on piano, John Ore on bass, and Connie Kaye on drums. The style of the tracks is in a warm mellow tone, which fits perfectly with Young's sweet sweet solo style. Tracks include "Another Mambo", "Somebody Loves Me", "Rose Room", and "Kiss Me Again". Next is the Pres & Sweets album – a classic Verve pairing of two of its greatest soloists, Lester Young and Harry Sweets Edison – both recorded here in a laidback, easily-swinging session that allows both players to shine equally! Young's tenor is always a welcome addition to any set of this nature, and Edison's playing here in a gentler, relaxed mode that's a wonderful fit to the easygoing groove laid down by the rhythm section of Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, and Buddy Rich. Titles include "Mean To Me", "That's All", "She's Funny That Way", and "Red Boy Blues".

new Various — Cafe Apres Midi – Skye & Gryphon For Cafe Apres Midi ... CD
Skye (Japan), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy .... $32.99 Out Of Stock
Groovy jazz from 2 very cool labels – the related Skye and Gryphon companies of the late 60s and mid 70s, respectively – home to some very very cool bits! Skye's best known as the home of Cal Tjader and Gary McFarland in their post-Verve years – and the label's got a feel that's very much in the spirit of both artists – often blending together jazz, Latin, and easy grooves with a dreamy floating sort of quality. Gryphon recordings came a few years later – and had a warm and mellow 70s jazz sort of feel – using richer production to deeply color work by a variety of well-known artists who got a chance to stretch out in their albums for the label. Despite the difference of a few years between them, the work from both labels sits very nicely together here – thanks to an expert job of compilation by Toru Hashimoto, the force behind the Café Apres Midi and Free Soul series! Titles include "Mixing" by Airto, "What's Going On" and "My Favorite Things" by Louis Hayes, "Tandoori" by Barry Miles, "Flea Market" and "Suburbia" by Gary McFarland, "Theme From Peter Gunn" by Chuck Rainey, "Don't Fence Me In" by Grady Tate, "Viva Peraza" by Armando Peraza, "La Pasionaria" by Michel Legrand, "You'll Never Get To Heaven" and "Armando's Bossa" by Cal Tjader, "Bluesette" by Mel Torme & Buddy Rich, and "Change Partners" by Phil Woods.

Carter's sound alone is enough to sell the record, and it's wonderfully recorded by Norman Granz – but the rest of the group is a good fit too, and features Oscar Peterson on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums – all of whom lay back nicely to let Benny take the lead.

new Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, & Harry Edison — Tour De Force – The Trumpets Of Roy Eldridge, Dizzy Gillespie, & Harry Edison (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1955. Used .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A triple-trumpet session with a really wonderful sound – the kind of all-star date that only a label like Verve could have done so well! As you'll guess from the title, the record's a showcase for the three trumpeters in the lead – and the tracks are long, with plenty of space for each player to state their case in a very distinct solo voice. Rhythm is by a familiar quartet that features Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums – and the use of guitar in a set like this creates an especially ringing tone at the bottom, one that often seems echoed by the brighter notes of the trumpet over the top. The album's got a great extended "Ballad Medley", plus long takes on "Tour De Force" and "Steeplechase".

new Buddy Collette — Jazz Loves Paris (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Specialty/OJC, 1958. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98
A hip little album from Buddy Collette – one that's ostensibly based around the then-popular idea of a set of Paris-inspired tunes – but which comes off with a sound that's a lot deeper than you might expect! David Axelrod produced the set – it was one of his early projects for Specialty Records – and Buddy Collette plays alto, tenor, and flute – in a group with Frank Rosolino on trombone, Howard Roberts on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Bill Richmond or Bill Douglass on drums. Red Callender joins in on some tracks, and his deep tones mixed with Rosolino's trombone, really help offset the lighter sounds of Collette's reeds in a nice way. Titles include "Domino", "Mam'Selle", "Pigalle", "I Love Paris", "La Vie En Rose", and "Under Paris Skies". CD features 4 bonus alternate takes, too!

new Buddie Emmons — Steel Guitar Jazz ... LP
Verve, 1963. Sealed (reissue).... $14.99
A nice little album that looks gimmicky – but which is surprisingly groovy, thanks to some great work by the players in the session! Buddy Emmons is a steel guitarist – playing here in a jazz style not usually heard on the instrument. The idea might have floundered miserably, had it not been for the fact that Mercury set him up with a tight little quintet that features the players Bobby Scott, Charlie Persip, Art Davis, and Jerome Richardson. Richardson's tenor and soprano make the session sparkle a lot more than you'd expect – and the record's got some nice tunes like "Any Time", "Bluemmons", "Oleo", "The Preacher", and "Gravy Waltz".

MJT+3 — Make Everybody Happy ... LP
Vee Jay, 1960. Very Good+ .... $14.99
A Windy City classic – from Vee Jay Records! The MJT grooves like nobody's business, thanks to a core rhythm group that includes Harold Mabern on piano, Walter Perkins on drums, and Bob Cranshaw on bass! Add to the mix a young Frank Strozier on alto, fresh from Memphis (he made the trip to Chi-town with buddy Harold Mabern), and the smoking trumpet of Willie Thomas, and you've got one of the tightest combos to never make it in the big time – a killer little group that was almost a Chicago secret back in the day, but one that's well worth discovering if you've got any sort of a love for hardbop or soul jazz! This oft-overlooked gem is one of the best hardbop albums to ever come out of Chicago, and it's got some great originals by Mabern – like "Richie's Dilemma" and "Make Everybody Happy" – plus a nice version of Booker Little's "Sweet Silver".

Horace Silver — Silver N Wood ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1976. New Copy .... $15.99
Wonderful work from Horace Silver – part of a great run of late 70s sides for Blue Note that unlock a whole new side of his soulful talents! The vibe here is different than the previous United States trilogy – still very righteous, with an overt message too – but served up in these wonderfully warm tones – with loads of great woodwind passages over these wickedly angular rhythms – grooves that are somewhat like those Silver first started forging on his 27th Man album! The arrangements are sublime – and on some cuts handled by Silver, but orchestrated by Wade Marcus – with players who include Tom Harrell on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Buddy Collette and Fred Jackson on flutes, and Jerome Richardson on soprano sax. The rhythm section is key, too – and features Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums! Side one features "The Tranquilizer Suite" – with passages that icnlude "Keep On Getting Up", "Time & Effort", and "Perseverance & Endurance" – and side two includes the excellent "The Process Of Creation Suite" – with "Motivation", "Activation", and "Assimilation".

Various — Chicago Soul – Electric Blues, Funk & Soul – The New Sound Of Chicago In The 1960's ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $19.99
A massive overview of the genius Chicago scene of the late 60s – and a set that's overflowing with some of the heaviest music ever recorded! The collection focuses on the most groundbreaking work from the later Chess years – particularly the funky blues, psychedelic soul, and tripped out jazz that was coming out of the Cadet Concept studios in the hands of producers like Charles Stepney, Richard Evans, and Marshall Chess! The Chess groups were ahead of their time by decades – blending together styles without a thought of simple genre restrictions, often forsaking chart fame and record sales in pursuit of an adventurous groove. And while some of the artists on the set may be familiar names, we can promise that most of them are presented in styles that you may not have heard before – as the collection features many unreissued numbers that are making their first reappearance here! CD set comes with a 40 page set of notes – and features 20 tracks in all, including "Please Newsboy" by Eve Barnum, "Burning Spear" by Soulful Strings, "More & More" by Little Milton, "Baltimore Oriole" by Lorez Alexandria, "Soul Vibrations" by Dorothy Ashby, "Evil" by Howlin Wolf, "Stereo Freeze" by The Stereos, "The Way I Feel" by Phil Upchurch, "Mama's Got A Good Thing" by Laura Lee, "The Wailer" by Sonny Cox, "Leave It In The Hands Of Love" by Fontella Bass, "Why Am I Treated So Bad" by The Majestic Choir & The Soul Stirrers, "She Suits Me To A Tee" by Buddy Guy, "Memory Band" by Rotary Connection, and "In My Body's House" by Gene Chandler.

new Phillip Lambro — Murph The Surf – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Motown, 1975. Used .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked crime soundtrack of the 70s – one penned by horror composer Phillip Lambro, and featuring a wealth of jazzy work! The style here is a bit darker and more complicated than the usual cop/crime work of the period – but in a way that really makes the record great, and helps it get past some of the cliches of the time! There's a depth here that rivals Lalo Schifrin at his best – and which is carried off perfectly by a host of great musicians that includes Emil Richards, Bud Shank, and Buddy Collette. Funky touches slide into more sophisticated colorings – always shifting the mood nicely, and making for a record that almost has a visual sort of quality overall! Title sinclude "Boat Chase", "Main Theme", "Over The Side", "Murph The Surf", and "End Theme".
(Cover has a light crease on one corner.)

new Herbie Mann — Hi Flutin (aka Flute Fraternity) ... LP
Mode/Premier, Late 50s. Used .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent little album from the team of Herbie Mann & Buddy Collette – one that has both players using a wide range of reed instruments, and not just flute! Herbie and Buddy are wonderfully paired here – in a way that expands past the usual flute jazz mode by adding in bits of tenor sax, alto, and clarinet – as well as a range of different flutes too – not in a mode that's gimmicky, but which complements the lighter sound of the flute with some heavier notes on tenor at just the right moment – in a style that reminds us of some of Jerome Richardson's best records of the time. Rhythm is by the trio of Mel Lewis on drums, Buddy Clark on bass, and Jimmy Rowles on both piano and a bit of celeste – and tracks are long, with a freshly spontaneous feel that's really great! Titles include "Morning After", "Here's Pete", "Theme From Theme From", "Give A Little Whistle", "Herbie's Buddy", and "Pop Melody". This is a 2nd pressing of the Mode album Flute Fraternity – without Buddy Collette as the co-leader on the cover, and with his name listed in the notes as Bobby Collette!
(Cover has some wear, some staining, a small split on the top seam, and a bitf pen on the back.)

new Maynard Parker — Midnight Rider ... LP
Prestige, 1973. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lesser-known funky jazz side from the early 70s Prestige years – one of the only sets we've ever seen from guitarist Maynard Parker, cut in a sweetly laidback style that's not unlike the Kudu Records groove! Parker's on hollow-body electric out front – working with small combo backing from Richard Tee and Ernest Hayes on electric piano, Jimmy Johnson and Grady Tate on drums, and George Duvivier and Ron Carter on bass. Joe Beck adds extra guitar, and also handles some arrangements – and the great Buddy Terry plays tenor and harmonica on a sweet version of "The World is a Ghetto". Other tracks include "Killing Me Softly", "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "Freedom Jazz Dance", and "Lady Sings the Blues".
(Cover has some wear, a cutout notch, and a promo stamp on the back.)
