One of the greatest albums of Brazilian jazz that Bud Shank ever recorded – cut with a great group that includes Clare Fischer on piano, Larry Bunker on vibes and drums, Joe Pass on guitar, and Milt Holland and Chuck Flores on percussion. The added percussion really brings a lot to the set – and gives it a strongly bossa-driven groove that really lets Shank take off on alto and flute solos. Fischer's piano is remarkably strong – caught at that clear early point in his career when he was such a fresh voice on the scene. The whole thing's wonderful overall – and if you think you might have it under another name, check the song listings – because we bet you don't! Titles include "Sambinha", "Gostoso", "Elizete", "O Barquinho", "Brasamba", and "Otem A Note".

The alto of Bud Shank gets some fuller backings from the great Bob Florence – all in a mode that's as groovy as you might expect from the title – and which also features a bit of guest work from Chet Baker as well! The sound's nice and buoyant – swinging, but never too over the top in a big band way – leaving Bud some great space to blow with a bit of strength, even if the tracks are relatively short – packing in plenty in a small space, and using his alto sax with a deftness, and sense of feeling we really love! Titles include "Imprevu", "Husbands & Wives", "Woman", "Gotta Go", and "In Times Like These".

Bud Shank's second Beatles-titled album of the 60s – and a set that's even groovier than the first! The record features a wonderful jazz-based approach to "second chapter" Beatles – with arranger Bob Florence providing superb arrangements for post-Rubber Soul tunes, which are mixed in with some other hip 60s pop numbers too! Bud plays alto sax and flute – still in the lead on the solos – but also couched wonderfully in work from players who include Chet Baker and Gary Barone on flugelhorns, Herb Ellis and Dennis Budimir on guitars, and Victor Feldman on percussion. Titles include "I Am The Walrus", "Paper Cup", "Windy", "I Wanna Be Free", "Hello Goodbye", "Flying", and "Blue Jay Way".

Bud Shank takes on the sounds of The Beatles – and a whole host of other 60s pop stars as well – all with results that are as jazzy as they are groovy! The album's one of a few that Bud cut for Liberty in this format – alto and flute spread out over fuller backings from Bob Florence, a great arranger who knows how to make things swing by bringing in some wonderful 60s touches! There's a bit of guitar at times, some compressed horns – ala A&M – and some overall mod rhythms that help change things up nicely from tune to tune. Titles include "Michelle", "Yesterday", "Blue On Blue", "Sounds Of Silence", "Turn Turn Turn", "As Tears Go By", and "Girl".

Sublime – all the way through! Bud Shank's work in the Brazilian jazz field has always been noted strongly in our comments – but never so much as when he's working with pianist Clare Fischer, a genius west coast talent who had a hand in some of Cal Tjader's best Latin recordings from the 60s as well. This excellent (and obscure) album has Shank and Fischer working in a combo with bassist Ralph Pena, and a quartet of percussionists who give the album an expanded bossa groove that takes it past lots of Shank's other recordings in this mode. Plus, Shank's alto has this pinched tone that's beyond compare – sadder than usual, with an edgey style that offsets the warm flowing lines of Fischer's piano nicely. Titles include "Joao", "Pensativa", "Samba Guapo", "Samba Da Borboleta", and "Que Mais?" – and nearly every track is by Fischer!

A groovy groovy groovy album that's been one of our favorites for years! The great Michel Legrand reprises material from 3 of his best soundtracks – Thomas Crown Affair, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, and Young Girls of Rochefort – and Bud Shank plays some amazing tenor solos over Legrand's swirling beautiful arrangements. If you like the original soundtracks at all, this album is a perfect companion piece – as it's got stunningly arranged versions of the material, all with Legrand's imprint, and all with a nice nice jazzy feel. Titles include "Theme D'Elise", "I Will Wait For You", "Chanson De Solange", "De Delphine A Lancien", and "His Eyes, Her Eyes".

Sublime early work from Bud Shank – one of our favorite west coast players ever – captured here away from some of his better-known work on Pacific Jazz! There's a nicely rough edge to some of the material – with Bud really blowing alto strongly on some of the leadoff tracks – which feature a trio of trombones from Bob Enevoldsen, Maynard Ferguson, and Stu Williamson! These players get in a few solo licks – and rhythm is by Claude Williamson on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – all working with Bob Cooper arrangements, on titles that include "Valve In Head", "Cool Fool", and "Mobile". A few more tracks feature the more playful side of Shank's horns – both alto and flute – in a cool quartet with Williamson on both piano and celeste, Don Prell on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums – on the titles "Tertia", "Theme", and "Have Blues Will Travel". One last track is especially great – "Blues In The Surf", which features a group with Billy Bean on guitar and Gary Peacock on bass – really opening up into some of the most creative modes Shank would showcase in the early 60s, before hiding out in larger arrangements.

As if the screaming title didn't tell you enough, the album features Shank's Brazilian sides – apparently culled from his Pacific Jazz recordings from the 50s and 60s, featuring players that range from Laurindo Almeida to Chet Baker to Joe Pass, Clare Fischer, and Joao Donato. Bud's always at his best in these moments – and heck, some say he even invented the format! Titles include "If I Should Lose You", "Carioca Hills", "Summer Samba", "Elizete", "Nocturno", "Sausalito", "Otem A Note", and "Samba Do Aviao".

Breezy vocals from Feather – a pair with a flair for groovin! The group are somewhere in between the best work of Jackie & Roy and Singers Unlimited – warm, sunny, with a bright and jazzy sound that's got some nice 70s touches – but which also stretches back to a time when spare jazz harmonies were enough to carry a tune! Feather features the vocals of Weaver Copeland and Mahmu Pearl – and on this CD, which features tunes from their albums on Discovery in the 80s, they're backed by players that include Ray Pizzi, Eddie Harris, Victor Feldman, Joey Barron, and Bud Shank. Nice Fender Rhodes on a number of tracks – and a total of 15 tracks that include "Chen You Lips", "My Desiree", "Haunted Ballroom", "Mulege Day", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Nica's Dream", "Zanzibar", and "Gaviota".

One of the best of the Stan Getz bossa nova sessions – and a record that features the great Laurindo Almeida on guitar – playing with more virtuosity than either Charlie Byrd or Joao Gilberto did on their collaborations with Getz! The record's got a driving rhythm section, with lots of long tracks, and nice laid-back solos by both Getz and Almeida – who's getting in some of his few jazz licks of the 60s here, working in a groove similar to that of his earlier sides with Bud Shank, but which sounds almost even better in the languid company of Getz. Cuts include "Outra Vez", "Winter Moon", "Maracatu-Too", and "Samba Da Sahra". Very nice!

One of the grooviest albums ever recorded by guitarist Barney Kessel – a sweet reworking of Henry Mancini's fabulous music for Breakfast At Tiffanys! The set's got a warm feel and more than a bit of bossa nova inspiration – similar to some of the other Kessel and Shorty Rogers projects for Reprise at the time – and the group features some wicked reed work from Bud Shank and Paul Horn, both of whom add some great color to the set – and make it way more than just another trio date from Kessel! The whole thing's wonderful – filled with favorites from the Mancini songbook – titles that include "Something For Cat", "Sally's Tomato", "Mr Yunioshi", "The Big Blowout", "Hub Caps & Tail Lights", "Breakfast At Tiffany's", "Latin Golightly", "Loose Caboose", and "Moon River Cha Cha".

An incredible treasure trove of music – the complete film scores that Michel Legrand penned for his films with director Jacques Demy – plus rare bonus tracks, alternate versions, vocal takes, and even a bit of working sessions and studio work as well! We've always been huge fans of this key cinematic collaboration – a musical match heard most famously in the films Les Parapluies De Cherbourg (Umbrellas Of Cherbourg), Les Demoiselles De Rochefort (Young Girls Of Rochefort), and Peau D'Ane (Donkey Skin) – music scored by Legrand with a sublime blend of his jazzy roots and some of the more joyous elements in the narrative – still some of our favorite soundtrack work ever! But here, in this great box with 11 CDs in tiny sleeves, you also get full soundtracks for Lola, Les Sept Peches Capitaux, La Baie Des Anges, L'Evenement Le Plus Important Depuis Que L'Homme A Marche Sur La Lune, Lady Oscar, Parking, and Trois Places Pour Le Vingt Six. Plus, the set also features a series of "Suites Symphoniques" for the three famous films – an English language version of Young Girls Of Rochefort, a CD of working sessions and playbacks, and another CD that features vocal and instrumental interpretations of the tunes – by Sergio Mendes, Bud Shank, Astrud Gilberto, Tony Bennett, Bill Evans, Isabelle Aubret, and many others! A real treasure – and the sort of set we never thought we'd see!

Great early west coast jazz! This album puts together 2 different sessions both recorded by Gene Norman in the early 50s. One features Shorty Rogers heading up a great group with Art Pepper and Jimmy Giuffre – on the tracks "Four Mothers", "Didi", "Sam & The Lady", and "Popo". The other features classic cool Gerry Mulligan material – played by a tentet with Chet Baker, Bud Shank, and Bob Enevoldsen. Titles on that one include "Westwood Walk", "Simbah", "Walking Shoes", and "Rocker".

One of Shorty Rogers' greatest records – and a very nice set of tight west coast arrangements that really shows off the Rogers sense of sparkle and swing – a vibe that definitely comes through in the famous cover image too! Shorty wrote nearly all of the tracks, and the writing's a great example of the good side of the west coast style – when the tightness of arranging is used to bring out the best elements in the players, and bend them around in some nice twists and turns, with good solos, and lots of nice little surprising bits. And in this case, the players are all great – with Jimmy Giuffre and Bud Shank on reeds, Pete Candoli and Don Fagerquist on trumpets, and Lou Levy on piano. Titles include "Lotus Bud", "Martians Come Back", "Chant Of The Cosmos", and "Astral Alley".

An unusual albums from the west coast scene of the 50s – recorded under the name of the Lighthouse All Stars, but featuring arrangements and compositions by Bob Cooper – who was the real driving force behind the set. Conte Candoli's in the group on trumpet – and other players include Buddy Colette and Bud Shank on alto and flute, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Victor Feldman on vibes and percussion, Stan Levey on drums, and Cooper himself on tenor. The overall sound is relatively tightly constrained, in a "jazz suite" mode – but there's plenty of room for solo space on the set, and Cooper's writing is as fluid as his ability is strong to bring these players together as conductor. The set's got a really great feel that gets way past some of the more academic west coast work of its sort – with a lot more soul than you'd expect. Titles include "Rain Blues", "Genesis (pt II)", "Architectonics", "Directional Suite", and "The Worker".

A groovy soundtrack to this hip surf film directed by Bruce Brown – filled with great little instrumentals that go way past the obvious! Brown had previously used jazz players for some of his films – including Bud Shank, who cut some great stuff for earlier soundtracks – but this set's got him working with The Sandals, a younger guitar-driven group with a cool style of scoring – partly surf instrumentals, but partly mod and groovy too! The Sandals move way past the stock surf riffs of chart surf groups – and they really do a great job with the changing moods and scenes of the film – fitting the many scenes of surfing on the screen. Titles include "Jet Black", "TR 6", "Scrambler", "6 Pak", "Driftin", "Good Greeves", and "Decoy".

The group is filled with hip west coast players like Pete Candoli, Jack Montrose, Bob Cooper, and Bud Shank – all of whom really soar together, and elevate Mel's vocals from the older velvet fog mode, into a leaner, hipper style that's really tremendous! The use of organ is especially nice – a warm wave of sound on top of some great bossa rhythms – and titles include "Naked City Theme", "Teach Me Tonight", "Desafinado", "Mr Lucky", "Theme From Route 66", and "One Note Samba".

An overlooked crime soundtrack of the 70s – one penned by horror composer Phillip Lambro, and featuring a wealth of jazzy work! The style here is a bit darker and more complicated than the usual cop/crime work of the period – but in a way that really makes the record great, and helps it get past some of the cliches of the time! There's a depth here that rivals Lalo Schifrin at his best – and which is carried off perfectly by a host of great musicians that includes Emil Richards, Bud Shank, and Buddy Collette. Funky touches slide into more sophisticated colorings – always shifting the mood nicely, and making for a record that almost has a visual sort of quality overall! Title sinclude "Boat Chase", "Main Theme", "Over The Side", "Murph The Surf", and "End Theme".

Great stuff – a groovy batch of short tunes from the TV show of the same name, performed by a larger ensemble that includes Frank Strozier, Bud Shank, Bob Bain, Victor Feldman, and Emil Richards. The tracks have a bit of a jungle/exotic groove to them – in keeping with the African setting of the show – and titles include "Elephantime", "Daktari", 'Out On A Limb", "Africa", "Galloping Girraffes, and "Rhino Trot".

Classic Art Pepper material, recorded in one of his comeback periods, and featuring the famous Richard Claxton photo of Art Holding his horn next to a tree. There's several different lineups featured, with a coupl of quintet and quartet sides, and a few with larger horn section, and the sidemen are the cream of the West coast jazz crop, including Bud Shank, Chet Baker, Curtis Counce, Leroy Vinnegar, Mel Lewis, Stan Levey and Lawrence Marable. 9 numbers in all, with rousing takes on standards like "What Is This Thing Called Love" and "A Foggy Day" and Pepper originals "Diane A Flow", "Zenobia", and "Powder Puff".

A great early demonstration of the bold talents as a leader from trumpeter Maynard Ferguson – heard here in a loose, open-ended performance that's more of a jam session than anything else! The style's almost similar to the Clifford Brown jam dates for Emarcy from the same time – two long tracks that are driven by well-crafted rhythms – and which really soar with open solo work from Ferguson on trumpet, Bud Shank on alto, Bob Cooper on tenor, and Bob Gordon on baritone. The work is nicely boppish and a fair bit more open than most of the players were getting at the time – and Maynard himself is often back a far bit to let everyone get in some good solo space! Each track lasts a side – and titles include "Night Letter" and "Somebody Loves Me".

A late date for Brit bandleader Vic Lewis – but a great one too, thanks to a strong focus on the bossa nova sounds of the 60s! The mode's a real change for Lewis, who could sometimes be a bit stiff – and the new groove definitely opens things up nicely – as does the album's work from a top-shelf of jazz soloists, both British and American! Side one has Lewis leading a combo that features a stellar lineup – tenor and flute from Tubby Hayes, more tenor from Ronnie Scott, trumpet from Jimmy Deuchar, flugelhorn from Shake Keane, and piano from Terry Shannon – all players who get plenty of chance to solo, and really make the music magical with just a few subtle touches. The flipside features Lewis leading a group of West Coast luminaries – Bud Shank on tenor and flute, Bob Cooper on tenor, Jack Sheldon on trumpet, Shorty Rogers on flugelhorn, and Victor Feldman both on piano and vibes. The groove is just as great as on the first side – and the whole thing's a real standout for Brit jazz at the time. Titles include "Bossa Nova Scotia", "Bossa Nova Blues", "Two Note Samba", "Last Minute Bossa Nova", "Danielle", and "Vic's Tune".

CD 2 features jazz tunes by Legrand and others – almost all of which are versions of Legrand's great compositions – and a few others based around his sublime arrangements! Titles include "Flight" by Stan Getz, "De Delphine A Lancien" by Bud Shank, "Vida Real" by Arturo Sandoval, "Images" by Phil Woods, "Once You've Been In Love" by Sarah Vaughan, "My Funny Valentine" by Toots Thielmans, and "I Will Wait For You" by Lena Horn. CD 3 features soundtrack material – perhaps Legrand's most famous area of expression, and for good reason too – as you'll hear on titles from films like La Piscine, Le Sauvage, Cinq Jours En Juin, La Buche, Ice Station Zebra, Cleo De 5 A 7, Dingo, The Picasso Summer, Les Demoiselles De Rochefort, and Robin & Marian. CD 4 is a rare treat – music we've never heard before, and a set of recent duets that feature Michel Legrand on piano and Cetherine Michel on harp – running through some wonderful takes on classic Legrand compositions, including "His Eyes Her Eyes", "Orson's Theme", "Au Concert", "Nobody Knows", "How Do You Keep The Music Playing", and "I Will Say Goodbye". Amazing music throughout – and a hell of a great set at this price!

A beautiful album of crispy cool jazz from the LA scene of the 50s – one that features the octet of Bill Perkins recorded live in Hollywood, but in a "special hi-fi theater recording" that has sound as sublime as his studio work! The group includes Perkins on tenor, Bud Shank on alto, Jack Nimitz on baritone, Stu Williamson on trumpet, Carl Fontana on trombone, Russ Freeman on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums. The live setting takes nothing away from the perfection of the group's conception, as Perkins' leadership is impeccable, bringing together the horns in a beautiful wash of sound. Titles include "Let Me See", "Zing Zang", "For Dancers Only", "One Hundred Years From Today", "Song Of The Islands", and "As They Reveled".

Another standout set from Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars – the kind of group who should have been a gimmicky way to promote his nightclub, but who actually managed to cut some of the best LA records of the time! The lineup here features Rumsey on bass, Bud Shank on alto, Bob Cooper on tenor, Conte Candoli on trumpet, Claude Williamson on piano, Stan Levey on drums, and either Frank Rosolino or Stu Williamson on trombone – depending on the track – and as before, there's a great focus on the solo talents of each member, so that even in this larger group setting, each number features a strong contribution by a particular player. Arrangements are great, and titles include "Who's Sleepy", "Isn't It Romantic", "Mad At The World", "Long Ago & Far Away", "Sad Sack", and "Dickie's Dream".
