Brazilian Trio (Alves/Matta/Da Fonseca) — Constelacao ... CD
Motema, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99 15.99
A great blend of Brazilian roots and piano jazz – played here by a trio that's all-solid, all the way through – serving up some really wonderful music that never relies on bossa cliches, or any sort of tricks and gimmicks! Instead, there's a really rich mixing of modes – one that's so deep down, it comes through with its own fresh flavor out on the top – thanks to magically fluid work from the trio of Helio Alves on piano, Nilson Matta on bass, and Duduka Da Fonseca on drums! There's plenty of sets out there that boast titles and concepts like this one – but trust us when we say that this trio's really head and shoulders above most of the rest. Titles include "Embalo", "O Cantador", "Cosntelacao", "O Boto", "Luiza", "Bolivia", "Isabella", and "Quebra Pedra".

new Clare Fischer — First Time Out ... CD
Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1962. New Copy .... $15.99
An amazing debut from pianist Clare Fischer – an artist who went onto have a subtle, but immediate influence upon both the American and Brazilian jazz scenes of the time! Fischer's got a lyrical approach to rhythm that's simply amazing – modern, but never cold and academic – and instead always freely dancing around, in a way that gives equal melodic roles to the bass and drums in his trio. There's a clear bossa nova inspiration here, but keep in mind that Fischer's sensibility was also a big influence on the bossa players of the time. The whole session sparkles with a fresh genius that still beats the work of most players still recording today – and Fischer's piano is accompanied by equally free-thinking work on bass by Gary Peacock and drums by Gene Stone. Most titles are originals, and tunes include "Toddler", "Stranger", "Nigerian Walk", "Afterfact", "Free Too Long", "Piece For Scotty", and "Blues For Home".

new Tommy Flanagan — Montreux 77 ... LP
Pablo, 1977. Near Mint- .... $7.99
A sweet Tommy Flanagan trio date – recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977, but with a warmth and intimacy that's like catchy Tommy at a small club date! Trio members include Keter Betts on bass and Bobby Durham on drums – but the focus is very strongly on Flanagan's piano – given plenty of space to stretch out, in tones that are awash in rich colors – ringing out beautifully on tunes that include "Barbados", "Blue Bossa", "Woody N You", "Some Other Spring/Easy Living", and "Star Crossed Lovers/Jump For Joy".
(Cover has light wear.)

new Hi-Lo's — Hi-Lo's Happen To Bossa Nova ... LP
Reprise, Early 60s. Near Mint- .... $29.99
One of the grooviest albums ever made by this great jazz vocal group – and a record that's darn impossible to find on wax! The Hi Lo's here hit the bossa craze of the 60's, and they turn their vocal harmonies to a Brazilian groove, in sort of a roundabout recognition of the way that their style was taken over by Brazilian groups like Tamba Trio or Quarteto Em Cy. The record has lots of cool cheesy vocal tracks with a nice groove – even if the bossa part isn't too authentic – and the track list includes cuts like "O Pato", "Gold Brazilian Sun", "One Note Samba", and "Carnaval".
(Stereo pressing. Cover has a promo sticker.)

Le Trio Camara — Le Trio Camara ... LP
Saravah/Dare Dare (France), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99
A killer album of jazzy bossa grooves – originally recorded in France in the early 70s, and darn hard to find in any format! The record was cut for the tiny Saravah label – home to groovy French acts like Brigitte Fontaine and Areski, as well as an elite group of jazz and world musicians. The overall style is similar to bossa nova piano sessions coming out of Brazil in the 60s, but the groove is a lot freer, and the band has a nice rolling sound that might be compared to some of the MPS jazz/Brazilian crossover sessions. Fernando Martins is the pianist, and Edson Lobo is on bass. Titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Nascente", "Bia", "Noa Noa", "Samba Novo", "Berimbau", "Nao Tem Solucao", and "Muito A Vontade". Very nicely repackaged, too!

new Sergio Mendes — Brasil '65 – Introducing The Voice Of Wanda De Sah ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1965. New Copy .... $15.99
That's Brasil 65, not Brasil 66 – a distinction that marks a key early stage for the great Sergio Mendes – heard here on one of his first albums to mix together bossa jazz and vocals! The approach here is a bit more like vintage bossa dates from Brazil – or a bit like some of the Verve bossa records too – as Sergio's core trio is at the heart of every tune, playing with a great jazzy approach – then augmented in different ways by alto and flute from Bud Shank, guitar from Rosinha De Valenca, and vocals from the lovely Wanda De Sah! Production is perfect – really in a classic Elenco Records mode – and titles include "Let Me", "Consolacao", "Tristeza Em Mim", "Muito A Vontade", "Reza", "Berimbau", and "Aquarius".

MPB4 — Contigo Aprendi ... CD
Biscoito Fino (Brazil), 2011. New Copy .... $26.99
An amazing return to form for this legendary Brazilian vocal group – quite possibly the best record we've heard from them in decades, and one of the few later sets to really capture the moody brilliance of their late 60s/early 70s work! The quartet work in a harmony mode, but one that's always been a lot darker than that of older contemporaries – such as Tamba Trio or Os Cariocas – in that MPB4 never think in strict jazz or bossa modes, but use these styles as a core, then move into deeper modes that are fleshed out with creative arrangements, and really wonderful vocal passages. This album really captures all that older charm of the group – thanks in part to arrangement help from Toninho Horta and Duofel – and titles include "Sabe Deus", "Contigo Aprendi", "Eu Amei Uma Vez", "Sabor Em Mim", "Noite De Ronda", and "Relogio".

Odeon/Discobertas (Brazil), 1960s. New Copy 7 CDs .... $84.99
A treasure trove of work from Pery Ribeiro – an important Brazilian singer in the early years of bossa nova – and one who never got his due up here in the US! Pery's a singer who's rooted in jazz, but whose style turned out to be a perfect fit for the new modes of the bossa generation – recorded here in a mix of great arrangements that go from larger jazzy ensembles to more intimate combos – always with a strong focus on his expressive lead vocals! The package features all original albums with full artwork, and there's also a huge amount of bonus tracks too – material from singles, compilations, and other rare recordings during these very productive years for Pery. The package features the full albums Eu Gotso Da Vida (1961), Pery Ribeiro E Seu Mundo De Cancoes Romanticas (1962), Pere E Toda Bossa (1963), Pery Muito Mais Bossa (1964), and Pery (1965) – plus the album Encontro (1966) done with the Bossa 3 trio, and the classic Gemini V Show (1965), with some vocals by Leny Andrade and backing by the Bossa 3!

A&M (Japan), 1967. New Copy .... $16.99
Beautiful stuff – and a record we never tire of hearing! This album's a sublime extension of the earlier Brazilian style of the Tamba Trio – in a set that has them adding a fourth member, and picking up some cool new sounds from producer Creed Taylor! The set brings the group's earlier blend of bossa jazz and vocal harmonies into play with Taylor's spacious sensibilities in the early days of CTI – that stretch when the label was partnered with A&M Records, in a mode that also echoes some of the best studio qualities of that imprint too! The songs are longer than usual – nicely stretched out in a beautiful blend of jazz, bossa, and voice – and tracks include a classic reading of Luiz Eca's "The Dolphin", a great take on "Canto De Ossahana", and the tracks "Flower Girl", "We & The Sea", and "Lemanja".

Tamba TrioTempo ... LP
Philips/Universal Sound (UK), 1964. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
The stuff of legend – and one of the greatest albums ever from Brazil's Tamba Trio! The group have a sound here that goes way beyond standard bossa jazz – in that amidst the piano, bass, and drums, the trio also harmonize vocally too – swirling together the lyrics, which are often wordless, in these cool jazz riffs that are really amazing – soaring out above the instrumentation, to create a whole new layer of grooves! Arrangements are by the group's pianist, Luiz Eca – who really reaches a high point in his musical development here – and titles include the classics "Boranda", "Barumba", and "Consalacao" – plus "Yansa", "Moto Continuo", "Nuvens", and "Pregao".

Tema 3 — Madrugada 1:30 ... LP
Whatmusic (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A groundbreaking piano trio from the end of the 60s – headed up by Brazilian jazz legend Gilson Peranzetta! Gilson's work has graced countless recent bossa revival sessions, as well as important 70s MPB albums – but this set was recorded back in 1969, when Peranzetta was a pianist trying to break out of the bossa stereotypes of the 60s generation. In doing so, he still used lots of the older trappings of bossa combo albums – sweet rhythms, gentle grooves, and lots of space for keyboard interplay – but he also worked in some more sophisticated arrangements, performed by additional horns on a number of tunes, working in small combo space the same kind of magic that Eumir Deodato would normally craft with a larger orchestra. The results are magically airy and appealing – and the set's a mix of original tunes and groovy covers, with titles that include "Samarina", "Manha Branca", "Afro", "Amazonas", "Watch What Happens", "Zond 5", "Sabia", and "Ela Vem De Volta".

new Walter Wanderley — Batucada ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1967. New Copy .... $16.99
One of our favorite Walter Wanderley albums ever – and a record that moves past the more familiar bossa trio style used on his hits for Verve, into groovier new territory with added players who include Dom Um Romao on drums and Marcos Valle on guitar! And not only is the lineup expanded, but the styles are too – as Wanderley moves away from the straighter bossa and samba jazz of his roots, into the world of more unusual, more complicated rhythms that were showing up in the Brazilian scene at the end of the 60s. Marcos Valle's contribution is felt strongly here – as the album includes a fantastic instrumental take on his classic "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" (aka "Os Grilos") – plus other Valle compositions that include "Ainda Mais Lindo", "Batucada", and "E Preciso Cantar". Other tracks include "Wave", "So What's New", and "O Barquinho".

Also included Zimbo Trio + Cordas – E Tempo De Samba from '67 – the first album to pair the Zimbo Trio with some larger arrangements and really helped expand their sound! Various — Bossa Jazz – The Birth Of Hard Bossa, Samba Jazz, & The Evolution Of Brazilian Fusion 1962 to 1973 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $22.99
A blistering set of bossa-tinged jazz – truly the cream of the crop of the Brazilian scene from the 60s and early 70s! The package is great both as an introduction to bossa jazz, and as a capper if you've ever heard any of the genre – an essential collection that not only features key tracks, but some rare gems as well – beautifully packaged, and remastered with sound that's way better than any of your old scratchy records! The approach here is wonderful – quick-stepping rhythms, soaring instrumentation, and a way of putting together a groove that's quite different than American or European jazz at the time – even during those eras when bossa was having a strong influence upon those scenes. And sure, in later years, some Brazilian-inspired projects from other territories could sometimes be a bit weak – but these cuts are the originals, and are filled with life, imagination, and originality that oozes forth from the very first note! 2CD package is beautifully put together, with a nice booklet too – and titles include "Birimbau" by Dom Um Romaeo, "Xibaba" by Airto, "San Salvador" by Tamba 4, "A3" by Som Imaginario, "Solo" by Meirelles E Os Copa 5, "Improviso Negro" by Sambalanco Trio, "Vento Bravo" by Edu Lobo, "Batucada" by Luis Carlos Vinhas, "Consolacao" by Tenorio Jr, "Like A Rainy Night" by Salinas, "Zazueira" by Balanco Trio, "Das Tardes Mas Sos" by Paulo Moura, "Bebe" by Eumir Deodato, and "Patumbalacunde" by Joao Donato.

Philips/El (Brazil), 1962/1963/1964/1966. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nearly 3 albums' worth of music from the legendary Tamba Trio – one of the grooviest groups in the 60s bossa years in Brazil! The trio are quite unique – in that they not only play upbeat bossa rhythms, but also harmonize along with their grooves – in a soaringly sublime quality that really electrifies the tunes! Most of their lyrics are jazzy and somewhat scatted – kind of an added layer of music on top of the core jamming of piano, bass, and drums – and the production on these key 60s sides really helps their sound hit just the right level – a heavenly sound that's occasionally augmented by added percussion, flute, or guitar. The CD is one of the best introductions to their work we've ever seen – as it features material from the 60s albums Tempo, Tamba Trio, and Avanco, plus the rare Brasil Saluda A Mexico single – a whopping 26 tracks in all, with titles that include "Reza", "Tamba", "Batida Diferente", "Influencia Do Jazz", "Nos E O Mar", "O Amor Que Acabou", "Tristeza De Nos Dois", "Negro", "Rio", "Yansa", "Moto Continuo", "Barumba", "Danielle", "Pregao", "Boranda", "Consolacion", and "Morte De Um Deus De Sal".

new Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd — Jazz Samba/Jazz Samba Encore ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1962. New Copy .... $13.99 18.98 Out Of Stock
A pair of bossa classics – back to back on a single CD! The first Jazz Samba set is one of those records that no home should be without – not only a pivotal album in the growth of bossa nova in the 60s – but a set that also really helped set the career of tenorist Stan Getz on fire! The real credit here might almost go to guitarist Charlie Byrd – as Byrd was a big early proponent of bossa nova rhythms, and had already been experimenting with them on his records of the time – yet also gets a key extra "umph" here in the presence of Stan's tenor – a bold, rich, soulful sound that really helps give the music a lot of direction – in ways that still resonate strongly all these many years later! Getz is completely sublime – a master of tone and timing throughout – and perfectly fit to these tunes. Rhythms are mostly from Byrd's trio, augmented with some extra percussion – and titles include the classic "Desafinado", plus "E Luxo So", "Samba Dees Days", "Samba Triste", "O Pato", "Samba De Uma Nota So", and "Baia". Jazz Samba Encore is hardly an "encore" of the first Stan Getz Jazz Samba album – as this set's got a slightly different feel, and lots of great elements that make it really unique! This time around, Brazilian musician Luiz Bonfa is on guitar – already a skilled proponent of the bossa by the time of the record, and arguably one of the few who really got it going back home in Rio. Stan's tenor sounds wonderful – as carefully and soufully blown as on the first set, but also with some new colors and tones too. Bonfa's wife Maria Toledo sings a bit on the record – hinting at Stan's work to come with Astrud Gilberto (this album was cut right before the Getz/Gilberto collaboration) – and the record also features added work on piano and guitar from the great Antonio Carlos Jobim – more than enough proof that the album's got a pure bossa pedigree! Titles include "Menina Flor", "Ebony Samba", "Saudade Vem Correndo", "Sambalero", "Samba De Duas Notas", and "Mania De Maria".

new Tema 3 — Madrugada 1:30 ... CD
Whatmusic (UK), 1969. New Copy .... $5.99 Out Of Stock
The results are magically airy and appealing – and the set's a mix of original tunes and groovy covers, with titles that include "Samarina", "Manha Branca", "Afro", "Amazonas", "Watch What Happens", "Zond 5", "Sabia", and "Ela Vem De Volta".

new Edu Lobo with The Tamba TrioEdu Lobo Por Edu Lobo ... CD
Elenco/Soul Jazz (UK), 1965. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
One of the greatest early albums from Edu Lobo – a groundbreaking set that has Lobo's vocals and guitar backed with sublime sounds from the Tamba Trio! As on their own records, the Tamba Trio harmonize wonderfully – letting Edu's vocals take the lead, but supporting him with those heavenly, airy tones that we totally love. The trio also provides instrumental backing too – a blend of bossa piano, bass, and drums – used strongly to emphasize the best moments in Lobo's compositions, in ways that hint at some of the more baroque turns his music would take in the 70s. There's a mix of ambitious sound and personal expression here that's simply breathtaking – and the album still features some of the best readings ever of Lobo tunes like "Boranda", "Reza", "Cheganca", and "Zambi". Other titles include "Em Tempo De Adues", "Cancao Do Amanhecer", "Requiem Para Amor", and "Cancao Da Terra".
(Great book-styled cover package too!)

new Norio Maeda — Alpha Ray ... CD
Takt (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $34.99 Out Of Stock
One of the best albums we've ever heard from Japanese pianist Norio Maeda – a trio date that really lets him open up – and cook with a lot more fire than on some of his larger-concept albums! The album's got an explosive feel on many numbers – a limber quality that isn't showy at all, but a bright exclamation of energy between all three members of the group – almost carried off with the mix of tightness and swing that you'd find in the best 60s bossa combos from Brazil – even though the style isn't bossa at all! The group features wonderful work on bass from Tatsuro Takimoto, and tight drums from Takeshi Inomata – on titles that icnlude "Alpha Ray", "Fifth Column", "Slobber", "Star Eyes", and "Infinite".
(Special on-demand CD from Sony Japan – done in very limited quantities, as a way of reissuing these rare jazz gems – and still with full color artwork!)

Mocambo/Mr Bongo (UK), 1966. New Copy .... $14.99 19.99 Out Of Stock
Classic trio material from one of Brazil's greatest pianists ever! Dom Salvador was a heck of a player back in the 60s – working in a tight trio format that was certainly part of the bossa combo sound of his day, yet also heavily influenced by American soul jazz artists of the same era. Here, he's working in an early trio with Edison Machado on drums – switching effortlessly between piano and organ as the rhythm section spins out lush, lyrical lines with more than a bit of soul in the mix. Many of the tracks on the album are quite obscure, making for a fresh little set that goes way past the usual piano trio side from 60s Brazil! Titles include "Indio Perdido", "Samborio", "Um Sonho Azul", "Balanco Do Mar Onda Quebrando", "Fred's Ahead", "Sonho De Carnaval", "Iluminando O Vazio", "A Cancao Do Amor Que Nasceu", and "Eu Compro Essa Mulher".

A nice lost little record in the jazz-exotica vein! Bill Irwin's combo is a groovy group that mixes organ, guitar, and drums – and they have a sound that's part Martin Denny, part John Buzon trio, and all groovy! There's a lean quality here that's mighty nice – a bit more jazz than usual for a record like this, with less of the sleepy sounds that you'll get from more Hawaiian-styled sets. The album's got some nice little groovers – like the title cut "Seduction", the original "A Swingin Samba", and the "Song Of India Bossa Nova" – plus "Romance In The Tropics", "Desert Sands", and "Montana Magic".

Conjunto Sambacana — Sambacana ... CD
Odeon/Think (Japan), 1964. New Copy .... $24.99
A really dreamy little set from this hip Brazilian combo – a set that's got a bossa feel overall, but which also seems to draw a bit from folkloric roots too! The instrumentation is nice and warm – a great 60s blend of light percussion, acoustic guitar, and nice bits of jazzy flute and vibes – all really sparkling nicely with the group's blend of male and female vocals – sometimes singing solo, but often coming together in these harmonies that are mighty nice! There's echoes here of some of the other bossa harmony groups – like Tamba Trio or Os Cariocas – but the approach is pretty fresh, too – given all the nice little touches the group uses to make the music here their own. Titles include "Pouca Duracao", "Amor E Ilusao", "Onibus Colegial", "E Assim Foi O Nosso Amor", and "Mandrake".

Erica & Chiqhinho Et Les Show Rio — Brazil 77 ... CD
Vadim (France), 1977. New Copy .... $11.99
Breezy bossa from late 70s Paris – a rare European session from Rio ex-patriots Erica Norimar and Chiquinho Timoteo! The record's got a warmly jazzy glow that takes full advantage of the vocals of both artists – trading them back and forth on the more lively tunes, in a way that's clearly inspired by the older Brasil 66 style of the 60s, but reworked here into a slightly hipper 70s sound. Instrumentation is mostly acoustic, with a lot of percussion and guitar that give the tracks a samba-styled groove – but a few tracks also feature a bit of keyboards, plus some occasional sax, flute, and trumpet. Titles include "Forro", "Dodo", "Hein", "Nega De Obaluae", "Gota D'Agua", "A Filha Da Chiquita Bacana", "De Frente Pro Crime", "Kid Cavaquinho", "Ligia", and "Vatapa".

A beautiful album of jazzy vocal tracks with a definite bossa feel, recorded by the group O Quarteto – a harmony group whose style is very reminiscent of earlier Brazilian ones – like Os Cariocas and The Tamba Trio! The record's a sparkling batch of bossa tracks, produced with an electric groove that's sort of similar to some of the late 70s MPS material – with soaring harmonies, warm keyboards, and a killer mellow jazzy groove – the kind of sound that was probably overlooked at the time, but which really sounds great all these years later! Titles include "Ceu E Mar", "Vo Ceitar E Rolar", "Desafinado", "Moca Flor", "Preciso Aprender A Ser So", and "O Barquinho". Very nice, and one not to pass up!
