new Magoo — Magoo ... CD
Boogie Times (France), 2010. Used .... $7.99
A contemporary set, but one with a sweet 80s groove throughout – as you might guess from the image of Magoo's hand-held keyboard guitar on the back cover! The sound here is mean and lean, every bit in the best boogie/80s groove mode that the Boogie Times label explores on their reissues – delivered with very classic production elements that will easily have you thinking the album's some lost gem from the 80s indie vaults! Magoo really gets his sound right, and serves up plenty of great hooks in the process – on titles that include "Refaire Le Monde", "Slowdown", "Marchand D'Histories", "Comme Elles Respirent", "Les Gens", "Dr Boogie", and "Mon Mot A Dire".

Zalmac (Zulema) — Whatcha Gonna Do ... LP
TSOB/Boogie Times (France), 1982. Sealed (reissue).... $9.99
A great later project from Zulema – one done in the years after her fame on bigger labels, but still pretty darn great overall! The groove here is quite different than the records she did back in the 70s – much more in the street soul mode you'd expect from the TSOB label – with lots of tightly popping basslines, sweet-stepping keyboards, and a set of rhythms that runs mostly in the boogie and 80s groove side of the spectrum! Turns out, Zulema's vocals are a perfect fit for the style – and where she might have overdone some tunes at points in the 70s, she's really fitting right in with the stronger backings here – kicking things very nicely with group co-member Al MacDowell. (Zalmac = Z + Al Mac) Titles include "What's In It For Me", "Dreamin", "See What Your Love Has Done", "Friends", "Whatcha Gonna Do About It", "I Get Down", "Happy Feelings", and "What Am I Doing".

new Various — Best Of TSOB Records – 12 Full Length Classics ... CD
Boogie Times (France), Early 80s. Used .... $8.99
A great look at The Sound Of Brooklyn label from the early 80s – a massive imprint that showed that the eastern borough was one of the funkiest scenes in New York at the time! There's a tightness here that most likely comes from the small roster of artists, and shared production tracks that link together most of the recordings – and the vibe is a great mix of post-disco club, particularly boogie modes, with some of the sharper sounds that were bubbling under on the streets of Brooklyn! Slight electro touches mix with funkier soul production – and the tunes often show some slight hip hop influences as well – even when the lyrics are more sung than spoken. Titles include "Inflation" by The Night People, "The Smirf" by Cory, "Messin Around" by Wild Sugar, "I Love Making Love To You" by Mel Sheppard, "What's In It For Me (12" version)" by Zalmac, "Man For My Lady" by Sabata, "TSOB" by Master Jay & Michael Dee, "Again" by The Night People, and "Strut Your Stuff (12" version)" by The Live Band.

new Paradise — Love Is The Answer (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Priority/Boogie Times (France), 1983. Used .... $11.99 Out Of Stock
A 80s groove treasure – one of the few albums cut by Paradise, a hip little combo who were plenty heavy on the keyboards! The style here is really great – very stripped down, but never too much so to ever be cold or electric – and instead always warm and soulful, thanks to great vocals from the group, and a slight undercurrent of jazz in the mix! Paradise come across with a quality that could have easily landed them at a bigger label – but the record's also got a better indie appeal too – a really fresh, unique quality that's miles from most hit soul of the time. Songs are all well written – and titles include "One Mind Two Hearts", "With You", "Just Can't Stop", "Satisfied", "Don't Give Up Now", "Love is The Answer", and "New World". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "One Mind Two Hearts (extended)", and "Back Together".

new Arizona Dranes — He Is My Story – The Sanctified Soul Of Arizona Dranes (CD & book) ... CD
Tompkins Square, Mid 20s. New Copy CD & Book .... $22.99 24.98
An amazing document from Tomkins Square – and a set that goes even beyond the usual high level of some of the other releases from the label! The set's a beautiful archival project – one that seeks to resurrect the rare music of Arizona Dranes – a gospel pianist and vocalist who recorded briefly in the 20s – on an obscure set of 78rpm releases that were only captured through acoustic technology. Dranes has an incredible approach – both to the piano, which is more bluesy – or almost boogie-woogie at times – and to her vocals, which have an unbridled soul that really comes through, even with the lower level of recording. The set was put together by journalist Michael Corcoran – who spent years looking into Dranes life, and wrote the notes for the 44 pages that come in the book-style package, which also includes some rare photos. 78s were remastered brilliantly – and titles include "He Is My Story", "Just Look", "God's Got A Crown", "My Soul Is A Witness For The Lord", "Don't You Want To Go", and "I'll Go Where You Want Me To Go".

new Joey Gilmore — Joey Gilmore ... CD
Blue Candle/Henry Stone, Late 70s. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99
An overlooked gem from the glory days of the TK soul empire – a mix of sweet soul steppers and more upbeat groovers – all set to tight arrangements from Snoopy Dean! There's a great Miami groove to most numbers – especially that modern soul style that started coming in during the Lew Kirton generation – almost more of a Philly sense of sophistication at times, which comes through especially well on the midtempo numbers! Joey's vocals have a nice sort of rasp to them – a bit less polished than the arrangements, which makes for a nice sense of balance – and titles incude "Let's Boogie On Down", "Get All You Want", "Give Me Your Love", "Rhythm In My Bone", "It's Here", and "Funny Feeling".

Klique — It's Winning Time ... LP
MCA, 1981. Near Mint- .... $16.99
It's definitely winning time for Klique – as the trio grooves here with a lean, clean sound that's totally great! Despite the silly jumpsuits on the cover, the group actually have a pretty nice sound in the grooves – one that's kind of a poppy approach to the boogie, filled with plenty of nice hooks and riffing rhythms – all laid out with production that never gets too cluttered or cliched! The sound is simple, but that's it's strongest suit – and the album's got a nice focused quality overall. Titles include "Love's Dance", "It's Winning Time", "From Now On", "Better Times", "So In Love With You", "I Think You Know", "Middle Of A Slow Dance", and "You Brought My Love To Life".

Roland Young — Isophonic Boogie Woogie (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flow Chart/EM (Japan), 1980. New Copy .... $20.99
A fantastic self-released album by the enigmatic Roland Young – an unusual blend of organic sounds and slight electronics – all put together with the careful creativity of older albums by members of the AACM! Roland plays all the instruments here himself – in a set of tracks that mix electric bass clarinet with kalimba, bells, chimes, soprano sax, and a bit of "electronic drone" – all at a level that's really compelling, and much more hippy dippy than you might guess from the date of the record! The electric bass clarinet is especially great – almost moogy or wah wah-esque at times – and tracks are longish and open-ended. Titles include "Flutter Fly Flounce", "Row Land", "Crystal Motions", "Velvet Dream", and "Loveliness". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Magenta Sky" and "Stillness".

new Mystic Merlin — Sixty Thrills A Minute (with bonus track) ... CD
Capitol, 1981. New Copy .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mystic Merlin runnin' at Sixty Thrills A Minute! It's a sweet ride, too, piloted by one of the best of the funky soul groups on Capitol. This one! As you might guess from the title, the record's got a bit more uptempo stuff than on their earlier album, and the band works incredibly well in this mode – moving briskly, but smoothly – and locked into unshakably solid grooves! Includes a couple of standouts tracks in "Goddess Of The Boogie" and "Haunting You (Crystal Ball)" – but the whole record is really nice! Other titles include" "Sixty Thrills A Minute", Sign Of the Times", "Monkey Love", "Hideaway", and "Get It For Yourself". This Big Break CD edition includes the bonus "Sixty Thrills A Minute (Single Version)".

new Various — Sounds Of The Times – From The KPM & Conroy Music Libraries 1970 to 1977 ... CD
KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of Brit sound library work – most of it from the legendary KPM 1000 Series, plus assorted bits from the Conroy label as well! The work here leans heavily towards funky jazz – those fuzzy, hard-driving tunes that always made KPM sides a key choice for action films and cop shows – and which have made digging through sound library records such a delight all these many decades later! The compilers did a really wonderful job with this set – creating a feel that's a bit different than the usual sound library collection – because although funky overall, the package also features some jazzy moments too – key cuts that are interspersed with the action moments to create a really fleshed-out sense of mood and feeling. Plus, the set list is huge – 25 tracks in all, running for well over 70 minutes – truly the treasure trove we promised at the start of this review, with titles that include "Soul For Sale" and "Tycoon" by Keith Mansfield, "Block Buster" and "Head In The Clouds" by Johnny Pearson, "Loco Motion" and "Soul Foot Strut" by Dave Gold, "Traffic" and "Challenger" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Short Cut" by James Clarke, "Heavy Traffic" by James Cameron, "Speculation" by David Lindup, "Vegas To LA" by Dick Doerschuk, "Tough Assignment" by Chris Gunning, "Speedway" by Nick Ingman, "String Boogie" by Brian Bennett, and "The Double Take" by Steve Gray.

new John Lee Hooker — John Lee Hooker Plays & Sings The Blues (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Chess, 1961. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 Out Of Stock
About as pure as you can get for John Lee Hooker – a classic set of cuts for Chess, recorded with a feel that's almost folksy at times! The guitar has a raw edge that goes way back to the delta – and the overall approach is much more gritty than even some of Hooker's labelmates at the time – a really classic vibe that's supported in the liner notes by Studs Terkel! Titles include "The Journey", "Hey Baby", "Mad Man Blues", "Worried Life Blues", "Apologize", "Lonely Boy Boogie", and "Just Me & My Telephone".

new Big Joe Williams — Tough Times (180 gram pressing with download) ... LP
Arhoolie, 1960. New Copy (reissue).... $14.99 18.98 Out Of Stock
Classic folk blues from Big Joe Williams – an artist who was really getting his due with 60s sessions like this! The album's a rare gem from the early years of Arhoolie – and is a great illustration of the way the label was sensitive to musicians like Williams – and really let them do their thing at a level that's kept the music feeling timeless for years. Material was recorded in California, and Joe's great vocals are backed by his own inventive work on nine string guitar! Titles include "I Want My Crown", "Mean Stepfather", "Shake Your Boogie", "Vitamin A Blues", "So Glad", and "Forty Four Blues".
(Super-heavy pressing – just like an original – and with a bonus download card too!)

Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa — Burnin Beat/Original Drum Battle ... CD
Verve (Germany), 1952/1962. New Copy .... $13.99
Heavy drums from this mighty pair – presented together on two classic albums! Burnin Beat is a drum-heavy spectacular that returns Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich to their big band roots – thanks to some hard-swinging arrangements from George Williams! The tracks are a bit shorter and done with a larger group than on some of the other Rich or Krupa sides for Verve – but there actually seems to be even more drum pyrotechnics here, possibly because the players' efforts are compressed into such a tight space! Production is a bit odd – with the drums so high in the mix that they sometimes come across with more treble than bass – but that really highlights some of the most inventive moments on the top of the kit as well. Titles include "Duet", "Perdido", "Evolution", "Night Train", and "Hawaiian War Chant". Original Drum Battle is a pretty darn great album – with a wonderful mix of JATP swing and strong-handed drumming by the leaders. The material was recorded at a Jazz At The Philharmonic show at Carnegie Hall in 1952, and although the main focus appears to be Krupa and Rich's drum work, there's actually some fantastic sax playing on the album – from both the alto of Willie Smith and the tenor of Flip Phillips, both of whom are at the height of their powers in this relaxed setting, working amazingly well around the bombastic drum pounding of Krupa and Rich. Tracks are long, and titles include "Idaho", "Flying Home", "Drum Boogie", "Drum Battle", and "Perdido".

Various — Sticks Over My Shoulder – Georgia Bluesmen Recordings 1976 to 1979 ... LP
Mississippi, Late 70s. New Copy .... $12.99
Amazing blues from the Georgia scene of the 70s – music that hardly feels like other versions of the genre coming out at the time – partly thanks to the raw recording quality of these tracks! Most of the music features just a singer and guitar – sometimes just one or the other – and the only other rhythm on the record comes from spoons or a bit of drums – which should give you an idea of the lean, rootsy sound of the record! The quality of the music is great, though – and the record feels like some older gem on Arhoolie or Yazoo. Titles include "James Boogie" and "Good Morning Little School Girl" by James Davis, "The Howlin Wolf" and "Old Red #2" by Jim Bunkley, "Poor Boy" and "If I Lose Let Me Lose" by John Lee Ziegler, "Love Blues" and "Hoochie Coochie Wagon" by William Robertson, and "Have You Ever Seen Peaches Grow On A Sweet Potato Vine" by Jimmy Lee Williams.

new Various — Birth Of The Groove – CTI Records ... CD
CTI, 1970s. New Copy .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-done collection of grooves from the legendary CTI Records – home to some of the most important jazz funk of the 70s! The set does a good job of getting past the familiar hits from the label, and moves into territory that showed the complexity of the grooves being laid down – a depth that's sometimes overlooked, given the success of CTI. The nicely-priced set features 10 tracks in all – including "Hard To Face The Music" by Idris Muhammad, "September 13" by Deodato, "Canned Funk" by Joe Farrell, "Rock Steady" by Johnny Hammond, "I'm Not So Sure" by Milt Jackson, "Hurtin House" by Esther Phillips, "Sugar Free" by Hank Crawford, "Shoogie Wanna Boogie" by Dave Matthews, "I Remember Wes" by George Benson, and "Storm" by Stanley Turrentine.

new Howlin Wolf — Howlin Wolf/Moanin In The Moonlight – Two In One ... CD
Chess, 1959. New Copy .... $4.99 9.98 Out Of Stock
2 blues classics from the great Howlin Wolf – back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Howlin Wolf – a record that has Wolf tightening it up a bit from his earliest years at Chess, and moving into a groove that would forever make him one of the key artists to record for the label! The raspy, rootsy feel of earlier years is still in place – but the recording quality's a bit better, and the tunes have a more unified feel – thanks partly to some classic compositions from Willie Dixon, whose work makes up a very big part of the album! Tunes were recorded between the years 1959 to 1962, and brought together for the record – and titles include "Shake For Me", "Spoonful", "Going Down Slow", "Down In The Bottom", "Wang Dang Doodle", "Red Rooster", and "Tell Me". On Moanin In The Moonlight, a set filled with raspy vocals, Wolf sings in a way that definitely lives up to his nickname! The sound here is spare and stripped down, with very little accompaniment – usually just a bit of guitar, piano, bass, and drums – and sometimes not even all that much! Wolf's vocals are wonderful throughout – archetypal, but not nearly as cliched as some of his contemporaries came to sound – with a timeless feel that really holds up throughout. Titles include "Smokestack Lightnin", "No Place To Go", "All Night Boogie", "Evil", "I Asked For Water", "Forty Four", and "Somebody In My Home".

new John Mayall — Back To The Roots ... LP
Polydor, 1971. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $5.99 Out Of Stock
John Mayall's definitely getting back to his roots here – and he's also getting help from an all-star cast as well! Mayall's vocals and piano are in fine form – almost with a rough-edged Blues Breakers sort of vibe, but sometimes a bit funkier too – in ways that strongly show the evolution of the older Brit blues groove into some hipper, more soul-drenched territory. Players on the record are a range of familiar names – including Eric Clapton on guitar, Johnny Amond on sax and flute, Harvey Mandel on guitar, Sugarcane Harris on violin, and Keef Hartley on some especially nice drums. Titles include "Prisons On The Road", "Groupie Girl", "My Children", "Home Again", "Blue Fox", "Boogie Albert", "Unanswered Questions", "Goodbye December", "Force Of Nature", and "Dream With Me". CD also features bonus tracks too – including "Accidental Suicide (1988 rmx)", "Force Of Nature (1988 rmx)", "Boogie Albert (1988 rmx)", "Television Eye (1988 rmx)", "Looking At Tomorrow (1988 rmx)", "Mr Censor Man (1988 rmx)", and "Home Again (1988 rmx)".
(Missing the booklet. Cover has edge wear, splitting on the top and bottom seams, some small pieces of tape, and a bit of pen.)
