new Gato Barbieri — In Search Of The Mystery ... CD
ESP, 1967. New Copy .... $6.99 13.99
One of the first albums ever cut as a leader by reedman Gato Barbieri – and a very sharp-edged session that's quite different than his better-known work in the 70s! Barbieri's tenor here has an incredible tone – as deeply soulful as Pharoah Sanders or late John Coltrane, and blown with a great sense of freedom – really stretching out on the album's long tracks. Gato never lets himself get too unfocused, though – and the album's an illustration of a side of his talents that was perhaps only shown this well on his recordings with Don Cherry. Players include Calo Scott on cello, Sirone on bass, and Bobby Kapp on drums – and the album's got a vibe that easily matches other ESP sets from the time by Charles Tyler or Sonny Simmons. Titles include "In Search Of The Mystery", "Obsession No 2", "Michelle", and "Cinematheque".

Charles Bradley — Victim Of Love ... CD
Dunham/Daptone, 2013. New Copy .... $12.99 13.99
Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here".

Teddy CharlesTeddy Charles Tentet ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1956. New Copy .... $15.99
Sublime modern jazz from Teddy – right up there with the best mid 50s work of other groundbreakers like Charles Mingus or George Russell, to whom Charles acknowledges more than a bit of inspiration! Charles plays vibes like no one else – especially at this point in his career, when he's moving into offbeat chromatic ranges that wouldn't be duplicated for another decade, in the work of players like Bobby Hutcherson or Gary Burton. His players on this set include Art Farmer, JR Monterose, Gigi Gryce, and Mal Waldron – and the album includes the original tracks "Green Blues", "The Emperor", and "Vibrations", plus a great version of "Nature Boy".

Bobby Hutcherson — Patterns (Japanese pressing – with bonus track) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99
A really heady set of tracks from vibist Bobby Hutcherson – a record that has him stepping away from the harder sounds of his early modern years – and moving into the sublime mix of soulful and modal styles that would really grow strongly by the end of the 60s! The album's a treasure through and through – warm, subtle interpretations of the music by a group that features Hutcherson on vibes, James Spaulding on alto and flute, Stanley Cowell on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – all working together in modes that are quite like Hutcherson's music with Harold Land – but slightly looser and freer at points too. The album includes a fantastic version of Cowell's "Effi", which was later recorded by Charles Tolliver a few times, plus other beautiful compositions by Joe Chambers – including "Patterns", "Ankana", "Irina", and "Nocturnal". Also features a bonus alternate of the title track!

Jackie McLean — Action ... LP
Blue Note, 1964. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A killer "new thing" session from Blue Note's mid 60s glory days – featuring Jackie McLean, and some youthful modernists, like Cecil McBee, Bobby Hutcherson, and Charles Tolliver, all coming together in an incredibly powerful set of tracks! Billy Higgins rounds out the set on drums, and his lyrical playing is a perfect complement to the more avant tones of the others – giving the album a free dancing soul, but also never letting things get too out of hand to lose the jazz basis of McLean's best work. The album includes an early recording of Tolliver's "Plight", plus the tracks "Wrong Handle", "Action", and "Hootnan". Great stuff, and a cool cover, to boot!

Marlena Shaw — Spice Of Life ... CD
Cadet, 1969. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
An amazing batch of sophisticated soul tracks – and a favorite with the righteous groove scene! On the surface, the record's a combination of jazz and soul tracks in the same mode that you'd find on some of Nancy Wilson's albums for Capitol during the same time – but digging deeper, you'll find an undercurrent of politics, feminism, and social commentary delivered with surprising intensity. Marlena Shaw's voice is generally sweet, but she's set up in some extremely powerful arrangements by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney that recast even the simplest phrase into a whole new setting of strength and pride – and Bobby Miller of Dells fame also helped make the record what it is, and helped write some of the best songs on the record. The set includes Marlena's classic original reading of "Woman Of The Ghetto", which has been sampled by just about everyone, plus "California Soul", which has a nice hard break, and the tunes "Liberation Conversation", "Where Can I Go?", and the original version of "Go Away Little Boy" – as sweet a statement of womanhood if there ever was one!

Various — Ace Story Vol 5 – Ace Records Of Jackson, Mississippi ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
A rich tribute to one of the greatest indies of the south – especially back in the 50s – Jackson's mighty Ace Records – home to a rich array of R&B, early rockers, and rootsy music too – all served up here in a mightily overstuffed compilation! The set brings together a few unreleased tracks alongside Ace singles and other obscurities – a rich testament to the strength of the label back in the day – and their great ear for sounds from surrounding scenes as well – as the music here has plenty of echoes of Memphis and New Orleans too! Various — Birth Of Northern Soul – More Red Hot Rhythm & Blues, Popcorn, & Northern Soul Rarities ... CD
Outta Sight (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $16.99
The blueprint of a generation – a set that brings together a huge amount of rare singles from the start of the 60s – most of which helped form the groove for years to come! The set's got a great early soul feel – tracks that show a genre still in formation – as bits of R&B, vocal jazz, blues, and other styles are pulled together in the new groove of the time – not yet as upbeat as the Northern Soul you'd know from a few years later – but definitely cooking with a similar sort of energy. There's plenty of numbers here to appeal to a mambo soul crowd – and titles include "You Ain't So Such A Much" by Blanche Thomas, "Feelin Kind A Lonesome" by Willie J Charles, "She Knocks Me Out" by Harold Burrage, "My Heart's On Fire" by Billy Bland, "Good Enough" by Bobby Guy, "He's The One That Rings My Bell" by Sherri Taylor, "I Think I Love You" by Helen Troy, "Little Annie" by Anna Bell Caesar, and "You Don't Have To Go" by Sam Myers.

Various — Country Funk 1969 to 1975 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $12.99
A sweet little set that definitely aims to stake out its own little territory – with a groove that lives up surprisingly well to the title! The music here is way funkier than you might expect – and comes from a time when many popular singers were working in studios staffed by cats who were pretty darn cool – and had a great ear for picking up some of the best musical undercurrents from other scenes – including some of the best soul and funk that was really breaking out in the US at the start of the 70s! As a result, many of these tracks have unexpectedly funky rhythms at the bottom – way different than the kind of backings that you might have heard in country soul records from a few years before – and different too than the redneck rock that was becoming more popular with some of the bigger acts on the charts. You're bound to recognize a few bigger names here – as the set's not just country artists – and as usual, the Light In The Attic crew have done a stunning job of putting the whole thing together. Titles include "LA Memphis Tyler Texas" by Dale Hawkins, "Georgia Mountain Dew" by Johnny Adams, "Light Blue" by Bobby Darin, "I Wanta Make Her Love Me" by Jim Ford, "Hawg Frog" by Gray Fox, "Fire & Brimstone" by Link Wray, "Street People" by Bobby Charles, "Bayou Country" by Gritz, "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" by Johnny Jenkins, and "Studspider" by Tony Joe White.

new Various — Free Soul – Classic Of Mainstream Records ... CD
Mainstream/P-Vine (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $28.99 Just Sold Out!
Jazz, soul, and a whole lot more – even a rare psychedelic track from the vaults of Mainstream Records – all brought together in one of the most dynamic entries we've ever seen in the Free Soul series! The cuts here go way past the obvious, and way past the familiar – and the genre-hopping approach is a great reminder that the Mainstream label had a heck of a lot more to offer than just some of its famous funky jazz classics. And as always, Free Soul compiler Toru Hashimoto does a great job of digging up and bringing the music together in ways that really sets unlocks its magic – a whole new way of looking at Mainstream, and one that's really helped us get a new sort of appreciation for the label! CD features 23 tracks, and nearly 80 minutes of music – titles that include "Four" by Jeannie Trevor, "Fuit Of The Desert" by Orient Express, "I Want You Back" by Bobby Shad & The Bad Men, "My Heart Said" by Emily Yancy, "Inner City Blues" by Sarah Vaughan, "Soul Makossa" by Afrique, "The Sweetest Sounds" by Carmen McRae, "Down Yonder" by David Young, "Sound Song" by Barry Miles, "I Just Want To Be There" by Jay Berliner, "Hard Hard Promises" by Alice Clark, "Make It With You" by Maxine Weldon, "Moonlight Serenade" by Jeannie Trevor, "Fly Me To The Moon" by Gloria Coleman, and "What's Going On" by Charles McPherson.

new Various — Let's Boogaloo Vol 4 – Deep Funk, Latin, Soul, Dancefloor Jazz, Alltime Stompers & Future Classics ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 1960s/1970s/2007. New Copy .... $16.99 Just Sold Out!
Andy Smith takes the helm this time around – and the result is one of the best versions of this series so far! As on other volumes, the tracks are a great mix of 60s and 70s soul and funk, plus a bit of Latin – layered with a few contemporary numbers too – all oriented towards a groove that's somewhat mod and plenty darn soulful! There's a tightness here that's really great – an ear towards picking just the right tunes and setting them up in just the right order – in a way that definitely makes the whole collection way more than just the sum of its parts! Tracks include "Don't Pretend" by The Belles, "Boogaloo Lebron" by Lebron Brothers, "No Controlling Me" by Baby Charles, "Cards On The Table" by The Diplomats, "Down & Out" by Osaka Monaurail, "You're Wasting My Time" by Billy Garner, "Keep It Coming" by Bobby Garrett, "Taking Over" by Ralph Robles, "They Say" by The Ovations, "Ton Of Dynamite" by Frankie Crocker, "That's What I Want To Know" by James Carr, and "Dynamite" by The Harvey Averne Dozen.

new Art Blakey — Album Of The Year (Impulse) ... CD
Impulse, 1981. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Well, "album of the year" might be a hard claim to live up to – but this is a heck of a great record! The album's one of Blakey's real sleepers – cut years away from his time at Blue Note, with a fluid soulful approach that steps off his work at Prestige quite nicely. The real strength of the set is the group – as even at this point, Blakey's got an insanely perfect ear for picking young talent. Every player's a star, and the group features work by Bobby Watson, James Williams, Bill Pierce, Charles Fambrough, and even a young Wynton Marsalis, who still sounds pretty nice at this point. The set list include some great tracks, too, originals by group members that include "Soulful Mister Timmons", "Little Man", "In Case You Missed It", and "Ms BC".

new Bobby Callender — Le Musee De L'Impressionnisme ... CD
Fallout (UK), Early 70s. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sublime blend of soul, folk, jazz, and funk – the rare third album from Bobby Callender, one of those artists who never fully gets his due because he's always sliding around between different genres! Although we like Callender's other work, this album is especially tremendous – a baroque blend of instruments, rolling rhythms, and Callender's raspily soulful voice – all coming off like some genius later production from the Cadet Concept years! As you might guess from the title, the record's kind of a tribute to impressionism – with bits on Monet, Degas, Van Gough, and others – but there's hardly an art history feel to the record, as it's easily the most soulful one that Callender ever cut, and has plenty of tunes that you can love as righteous soul music, and forget about the paintings that inspired them. Plenty of Terry Callier/Charles Stepney in the mix here – and the whole album is an extended suite of tracks that fits perfectly together!

new Terry Callier — I Just Can't Help Myself ... LP
Cadet, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best albums that Terry Callier ever recorded – and a masterpiece of the baroque soul crossover style that was going down at the Chess/Cadet label at the time! Terry's own folksy singing and playing would be more than enough to make this record great – but it's given an amazing edge by Richard Evans and Charles Stepney, who create these floating pillows of sound and washes of jazzy colors that fit Terry's moods perfectly, and really expand the emotional intensity of the songs. At the time of this release, the Chess empire was falling apart – but the forces that be put a great last push into the record, and Terry's backed by superb work from Chicago studio giants like Phil Upchurch, Don Myrick, Art Hoyle, Bobby Christian, Cleveland Eaton, Louis Satterfield, and Evans and Stepney themselves! Every track is a wonder, and titles include "Alley-Wind Song" , "Can't Catch the Trane", "Bowlin' Green", and "Until Tomorrow".

new Webster Lewis — Live In Norway – The Club 7 Live Tapes ... CD
Plastic Strip Press (Norway), 1971. New Copy 2CDs .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The earliest work we've ever heard from keyboardist Webster Lewis – and a set that's quite different than his late 70s groovers for Columbia Records! The music here is equal parts jazz, soul, and funk – spun out of over a set of long tracks recorded in Oslo at the start of the 70s – and done in a very righteous mode overall! Even at this early age, Lewis is a tremendous talent on the keys – hitting the Hammond and electric piano with a groove that's somewhere in between Doug Carn or Charles Earland at the time – and always with a free-flowing, very exploratory sound that's wonderfully recorded throughout – and which almost makes the record feel like an American classic on the Black Jazz label! The drums on the set are by Jimmy Hopps – who brings in some funky beats at just the right moments – and other musicians include Bobby Greene on alto and Stan Strickland on tenor – plus Judd Watkins on vocals, who sings on some of the best songs with a deep-voiced quality that's really great! This double-length reissue really expands past the previous version on Counterpoint – and the 2CD set features 15 tracks that include "Do You Believe", "Saturday Night Opening", "Dear Sister", "Qvote Unqvote", "Mr Knots", "Space Rock", "Silent Lights", "Up On The Roof", "Club 7 Latin", "For Arne", "Twelve Gates To The City", and "Intermezzo".

Polydor, Early 70s. New Copy .... $4.99 9.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing – and the best yet in this legendary series! Like the other volumes, this is a collection of funky work produced by James Brown for other artists, most of it lifted from his legendary People Records imprint. However, unlike the others, or at least unlike the first volume, this volume's got some amazing stuff that almost never shows up on other reissues – and it's even got some incredible unreleased material! The whole thing's a super-heavy super-funky dip into some of the rarest James Brown-related material you can find – if you can find it at all in any other format. Titles include "Pick Up The Pieces One By One" by AABB, "There Was A Time" by Dee Felice Trio, "Doin The Do" by Bobby Byrd & The JBs, "Who Knows" by Beau Dollar, "Talkin Loud & Sayin Nothin (original rock version)" by James Brown, "Mr Hot Pants" by The Believers, "Give It Up Or Turnit Loose" by Lyn Collins (a 45-only track), "How You Gonna Get Respect?" by Hank Ballard, "Hang Out & Hustle" by Sweet Charles (a 45-only track), and "Blow Your Head (undubbed version)" by The JBs! new Various — Sweet Dreams – Where Country Meets Soul Vol 2 – 23 Exceptional Examples Of How Blurred The Line That Separates Country & Soul Music Can Be ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great sounds from a very special place – that magical meeting point where country meets soul – a spot that was crossed surprisingly often in the southern soul scene of the 60s and 70s! The set's a great follow-up to the excellent first volume – and really does a wonderful job of showing the way that a country ethos could work equally well in soul music – with results that will definitely have you re-thinking your ideas of cultural separation in the south. Much of the work is from that great late 60s/early 70s point when the country soul genre was really maturing – moving past the earlier moments of Ray Charles or Brook Benton, and using the style to express a new level of lyrical sophistication – especially in songs of love lost. Titles include "Sweet Music Man" by Millie Jackson, "Don't You Ever Get Tired" by Bettye Swann, "I Hate You" by Bobby Bland, "Statue Of A Fool" by David Ruffin, "Tennessee Waltz" by Otis Redding, "Bad News" by Clarence Carter, "Sunday Morning Coming Down" by Hank Ballard, "But You Know I Love You" by Sweet Inspirations, "Please Help Me I'm Falling" by William Bell, "Sometimes" by Facts Of Life, "I'll Release You" by Ted Taylor, and "All I Have To Offer" by Eddie James.

new Charles Earland — Third Degree Burn ... LP
Milestone, 1989. Used .... $0.99 Out Of Stock
A nice later set from the mighty burner, after he returned to the more bluesy organ based format from the more R&B and fusion inflected sets he'd released throughout the late 70s and early 80s. Though the rough edges are a bit more smoothed out on some of the numbers than we'd care for, the group's composed of really solid players including Grover Washington, David Newman and Bobby Broom, and the majority of the set cooks nicely, on numbers like the title track, "Cosmic Phriends", "Don't Be So Mean Arlene" and "The Way You Make Me Feel".

new Bobby Hutcherson — Head On (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1971. New Copy .... $12.99 13.98 Out Of Stock
One of the most sophisticated albums that Bobby Hutcherson recorded with reedman Harold Land – a very hip session that features the arrangements of piano player Todd Cochran – also known as Bayete for a pair of early 70s albums on Prestige! The sound here is more farther-reaching than before for the team of Hutcherson and Land – a deepening of the soulful spirits first cooked up on their earlier collaborations, stretched out to farther-reaching territory in the hands of Cochran's arrangements and compositions. The group's got a full sound too – with trumpet and flugelhorn from Oscar Brashear, trombone from George Bohannon, and added reeds from players who include Ernie Watts, Fred Jackson, and Charles Owens. Harold Land plays tenor and flute, Hutcherson vibes and marimba, and Cochran is on acoustic piano throughout – but the record also features some electric keys from William Henderson. Titles include the 3 part suite "At The Source", plus "Many Thousands Gone", "Clockwork Of The Spirits", and "Mtume". CD also features 3 great bonus tracks – the funky 17 minute "Hey Harold", plus "Jonathan" and "Togo Land".

The third set of hip hop jazz instrumentals from J Rawls & The Liquid Crystal Project – blending breezy 70s soul jazz inspired keys and horns with the head-nodding beat aesthetic of the most timeless hip hop – working as strongly on the jazzy side here, if not more so! Producer & DJ J Rawls once again works with fellow producer and keys player B Jazz along with drummer Rob Riley, Charles Cooper and Eddie Bayard on sax, plus guest trumpeter Pharez Whitted (the horns really bring some incredible depth). It's wonderful stuff! The electric keys lend a smoothed out finish, though still with a jazz funk vibe, while the bass, drums and beats carry a hip hop-reared insistence. Get it! Includes "Nematic Surprise", "A Tribute To De La", "Stand Up", "A Tribute To JC", "Friedrich And Otto", "Ghetto", "195", "A Tribute To Tribe", "The Equinox", "The Maier-Saupe Story", "Jazzy Bobby", "Where Is The Love", "Work" and more.

new Marlena Shaw — Spice Of Life ... LP
Cadet, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Out Of Stock
The set includes Marlena's classic original reading of "Woman Of The Ghetto", which has been sampled by just about everyone, plus "California Soul", which has a nice hard break, and the tunes "Liberation Conversation", "Where Can I Go?", and the original version of "Go Away Little Boy" – as sweet a statement of womanhood if there ever was one!

new Various — Country Funk 1969 to 1975 ... LP
Light In The Attic, New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
