New Bob Marley & The WailersCatch A Fire ... LP
Island, 1973. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Marley & the Wailer's debut on Island, and though there is a bit too much of Blackwell's production afoot here, it's still a remarkable set. Not quite as slick as some of the later Island LPs, and worth it since it still features the original lineup with Peter Tosh & Bunny Wailer . Includes the classic "Stir It Up" plus "Slave Driver", "Kinky Reggae", "High Tide Or Low Tide" & "Concrete Jungle". Essential stuff. LP, Vinyl record album
(In the regular cover with Bob smoking a "Marley".)

JAD/Cleopatra, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Dub version of the original follow up to the Lee Perry/Bob Marley collaboration Soul Rebels – a that set presents many Marley classics in their early raw forms – and here in tripped out dub form! Though Marley and Perry would both go on to greater success, these early sides are some of their finest moments. Much, more than a mere early glimpses of a superstar in ascent – it's brilliant stuff! Tracks include "Keep On Moving", "Don't Rock My Boat", "Fussing & Fighting", "Put It On", "Duppy Conqueror (Version 4)", "Kaya", "Memphis", "African Herbsman" "Brain Washing" and "Sun Is Shining". New Bob Marley & The WailersBurnin' ... LP
Island, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
The second LP the Wailers cut for Island, and probably their most raw and unrelenting, both in the revolutionary message and fierce rhythms. The last set to feature the original lineup with Peter Tosh & Bunny Wailer, and with none of the extra production flourishes Blackwell would glop onto the other Wailer's sets. Includes mighty, mighty classics like "Get Up, Stand Up", "Duppy Conqueror", "One Foundation" & "Small Axe", and the hit "I Shot The Sheriff". LP, Vinyl record album

New Bob Marley & The WailersSoul Rebels ... LP
Trojan, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice collection of early Bob Marley & The Wailers singles – all produced by Lee Perry! The music's a great meeting of two important reggae talents – quite different than both in later years, especially Marley – as the music has a great rawness that would get glossed over in Bob's years with Island, when he would go on to become an international star! The cuts were recorded at Randy's, and titles include "Soul Rebel", "Try Me", "It's Alright", "No Sympathy", "My Cup", "Soul Almighty", "Rebel's Hop", "Corner Stone", "Four Hundred Years", "No Water", "Reaction", and "My Sympathy". New Bob Marley & The WailersBabylon By Bus ... CD
Island/Tuff Gong, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
In the mold of so many large labels during the 70s, Island attempted to capitalize on Marley's popularity and the trend of the day by issuing a double live album. If the Wailers weren't such a powerful live act, this would have been totally unjustified trend hopping, but as with the earlier Live LP from 1975, this set offers up several excellent renditions of numbers like "Exodus", "Stir It Up", "Rat Race", "Concrete Jungle", "Lively Up Yourself" and "Is This Love", plus 7 more. Bob MarleyExodus ... CD
Island, 1977. Used ... $3.99
One of our favorite Wailers LPs – as solid a statement as Marley had made, and to our ears, the finest moment of his later career. The album features classics like "Natural Mystic", "Three Little Birds", "One Love/People Get Ready" and the excellent, driving title track "Exodus". The 10 tracks of the original LP also include "So Much Things To Say", "Guiltiness", "The Heathen", "Jamming", "Waiting In Vain", and "Turn Your Lights Down Low". CD

Bob MarleyRasta Revolution ... LP
Trojan (UK), 1974. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A sweet set of sides cut by the Wailers under Lee Perry's production. Crucial early roots versions of some of Marley's strongest material, like "Mr. Brown", "Soul Rebel", "Duppy Conqueror", and "400 Years" rendered in a raw Kingston soul style! Give us this stuff over the Island LPs any day! 13 tracks in all, this set also includes "Try Me", "It's Alright", "No Sympathy", "My Cup", "Rebel's Hop", "Corner Stone", "No Water", "Reaction" and "Soul Almighty". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear, some sticker residue, and a crease on the spine.)

Wailers BandMajestic Warriors (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1991. New Copy ... $16.99
Post-Bob Marley work from The Wailers – a set recorded for the mostly-soul Tabu label, but one that still carries on the spirit of their legacy of the 70s! Production is surprisingly faithful – very much what you'd expect an evolved Wailers to sound like a decade after the passing of Marley – and lead vocals are by Junior Marvin, who has a slinky, soulful vibe that moves along just right with the rhythms. Aston Barrett co-leads the group with Marvin – and titles include "Liberty", "Trip", "Dancing Boys", "Sweet Cry Freedom", "Out Of Exile", "Bad Mind People", "My Friend", "Nothin' For Nothin'", "Live And Love", "Rock On, Be Strong", and "Could You Be Loved". Nice reissue – in book-like cover, with new liner notes – and bonus tracks that include 6 remixes of "My Friend" – including a "toast rap" and "extended toast rap"! CD

VariousStudio One Groups ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $19.99
Sweet Jamaican harmony! Harmony groups form a major piece of the Jamaican music tapestry, and Soul Jazz casts their Studio One-centered spotlight on one of the finest batches of Jamaican ensemble soul around! Covering everything from the rocksteady years on up through the late roots era, the groups showcased here deliver smoothly harmonized numbers under Cosxsone Dodd's deft direction, with only a few hewing towards the more raw sound favored by some of the rootsier ensembles, but all over easy Studio One rocking grooves. 19 dynamite numbers in all, with full annotation as with other releases in this Soul Jazz series, including "Solid Foundation" by the Righteous Flames, "Things A Come Up To Bump" by the Bassies, "You Will Never Know" by the Mad Lads, "What Is It" by the Consumates, "The Struggle" by the Viceroys, "Get In The Groove" by the Heptones, "Pick Up The Pieces" by the Royals, "Jah Jah Go Before Us" by the Gladiators, "Love & Affection" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, "Down Presser International" by the Stingers, "Baby Why" by the Cables, "The Pressure Is On" by the Purpleites, "Cheating & Lying" by the Silvertones and more! New VariousRhythm Come Forward – A Reggae Anthology ... CD
Columbia, Mid 70s-Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An odd compilation pulled together by Columbia in the 80s, not because the assortment of tracks is especially out of place or without continuity, but because the set seems mostly to be pulled together to capitalize on reggae's popularity, though it was assembled well after most major labels had given up on cashing in with Jamaican music. Though some material is listed as previously unreleased like Aswad's "Drum & Bass Line" and "African Children", though those tracks were available at the time, but the compilation does have a unique Francois Kevorkian remix of Jimmy Cliff's "Treat The Youths Right", and more than a handful of other nice numbers. 9 tracks in all, the set also includes "One Love" and "Simmer Down" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, "legalize It" and "Stepping Razor" by Peter Tosh, "Blood Stain" by Yellowman and Sister Nancy and "Try Jah Love" by Third World. New Bob Marley & OthersLegend Remixed ... CD
Island, 1970s/2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ballsy, yet perfectly respectful remixes of essential Bob Marley And The Wailers treasures – numbers from the quintessential Legend compilation and a couple more – done by a diverse roster that includes Thievery Corporation, Jim James, Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Photek, Z-Trip, Nickodemus, Pretty Lights and more! This is one of those contemporary revisits of classic material that works really well. Bob's vocals are so passionate, the songs so strong, and the choruses so memorable that they hold firm even to radical reinterpretations – but none of the remixers here run off of the rails. None are so foolish as to bury Bob Marley in their mixes, and it's for the most part a really endearing set! Includes "Waiting In Vain (Jim James Remix)", "Stir It Up (Ziggy Marley Remix)", "Get Up Stand Up (Thievery Corporation Remix)", "Exodus (Pretty Lights Remix)", "Jamming (Nickodemus And Zeb Remix)", "Punky Reggae Party (Z-Trip Remix)" featuring Lee Scratch Perry, "Buffalo Soldier *Stephen Marley Remix)" and more. 16 in all.
