New Bob Marley & The WailersAfrican Herbsman ... LP
Trojan, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Great early work by Bob Marley & The Wailers – some of it produced by the legendary Lee Perry, too! Some of the tunes are early takes on later famous versions – but in a way, they're actually more definitive – in that they tie Marley back to the rich Kingston culture, instead of making him some beatific figure who emerged to greatness on his own. The rougher edge is a great contrast to Marley during the Island years – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Lively Up Yourself","Small Axe", "Duppy Conqueror", "African Herbsman", "Sun Is Shining", "Keep On Moving", "Don't Rock The Boat", and "Kaya". We'd be willing to wager Marley is perhaps the artist whose work has been released and re-released, repackaged and reformatted more than any other. This set features work recorded under Coxsone Dodd at Studio One: "Wings Of A Dove", "It Hurts To Be Alone", "I'm Still Waiting", "Who Feels It", "Do You Remember", "Dancing Shoes", "I Don't Need Your Love", "Lonesome Track", "Do You Feel The Same Way" and "The Ten Commandments Of Love". Bob Marley & The WailersNatty Dread ... CD
Island/Tuff Gong, 1974. Used ... $3.99
Essential – probably Marley's most well known work. This is his breakthrough 3rd album, just after Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh left the group, replaced by the female harmony group the I-Threes. Not nearly as slick as some of his other Island recordings, this one was still recorded in Jamaica, at Harry J's with the amazing Wailers rhythm section Carlton & Aston Family Man Barrett. Includes the classics "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman, No Cry", "Rebel Music", "Natty Dread" and "Talkin' Blues". The 9 tracks of the original album also include "Them Belly Full", "SoJah She", "Bend Down Low" and "Revolution", plus this reissue includes a 10th bonus track, "Am-A-Do". CD

Bob Marley & The WailersSoul Revolution Part 2 – Dub (mono version – on colored vinyl) ... LP
JAD/Cleopatra, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Dub version of the original follow up to the Lee Perry/Bob Marley collaboration Soul Rebels – a that set presents many Marley classics in their early raw forms – and here in tripped out dub form! Though Marley and Perry would both go on to greater success, these early sides are some of their finest moments. Much, more than a mere early glimpses of a superstar in ascent – it's brilliant stuff! Tracks include "Keep On Moving", "Don't Rock My Boat", "Fussing & Fighting", "Put It On", "Duppy Conqueror (Version 4)", "Kaya", "Memphis", "African Herbsman" "Brain Washing" and "Sun Is Shining". New Bob Marley & The WailersBabylon By Bus ... CD
Island/Tuff Gong, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
In the mold of so many large labels during the 70s, Island attempted to capitalize on Marley's popularity and the trend of the day by issuing a double live album. If the Wailers weren't such a powerful live act, this would have been totally unjustified trend hopping, but as with the earlier Live LP from 1975, this set offers up several excellent renditions of numbers like "Exodus", "Stir It Up", "Rat Race", "Concrete Jungle", "Lively Up Yourself" and "Is This Love", plus 7 more. New Bob Marley & The WailersCatch A Fire ... LP
Island, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Marley & the Wailer's debut on Island, and though there is a bit too much of Blackwell's production afoot here, it's still a remarkable set. Not quite as slick as some of the later Island LPs, and worth it since it still features the original lineup with Peter Tosh & Bunny Wailer . Includes the classic "Stir It Up" plus "Slave Driver", "Kinky Reggae", "High Tide Or Low Tide" & "Concrete Jungle". Essential stuff. LP, Vinyl record album
(In the regular cover with Bob smoking a "Marley".)

Marley & the Wailer's debut on Island, and though there is a bit too much of Blackwell's production afoot here, it's still a remarkable set. Not quite as slick as some of the later Island LPs, this expanded deluxe edition also has a full CD of the more raw Jamaican versions, which on almost all songs are the superior takes to our ears. Includes the classic "Stir It Up" plus "Slave Driver", "Kinky Reggae", "High Tide Or Low Tide" & "Concrete Jungle". Essential stuff. CD

New Bob Marley & The WailersSoul Rebels ... LP
Trojan, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice collection of early Bob Marley & The Wailers singles – all produced by Lee Perry! The music's a great meeting of two important reggae talents – quite different than both in later years, especially Marley – as the music has a great rawness that would get glossed over in Bob's years with Island, when he would go on to become an international star! The cuts were recorded at Randy's, and titles include "Soul Rebel", "Try Me", "It's Alright", "No Sympathy", "My Cup", "Soul Almighty", "Rebel's Hop", "Corner Stone", "Four Hundred Years", "No Water", "Reaction", and "My Sympathy". New Bob Marley & The WailersSurvival ... CD
Island/Tuff Gong, 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Marley's answer record after the assassination attempt. While not as hardcore roots as our favorite LPs, we dig the heavy African influence throughout, plus there's some fairly radical politics in play here too. "Ambush The Night", "Ride Natty Ride", "One Drop" and "So Much Trouble" are the standouts. CD

New Bob Marley & The WailersJamaican Storm ... LP
Accord, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A collection of crucial pre-Island Records material from Bob Marley – work that really helped shape the sound of Jamaican music in the 70s – and a surprisingly strong document of the artist at his early best! There's a bit less polish here – and maybe a bit less majesty, too – but Marley's clearly on the right track, and sounding great – on titles that include "Soul Rebel", "Hammer", "Mellow Moods", "There She Goes", "Touch Me", "You Can't Do That To Me", "How Many Times", and "Chances Are". Wailers BandMajestic Warriors (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1991. New Copy ... $16.99
Post-Bob Marley work from The Wailers – a set recorded for the mostly-soul Tabu label, but one that still carries on the spirit of their legacy of the 70s! Production is surprisingly faithful – very much what you'd expect an evolved Wailers to sound like a decade after the passing of Marley – and lead vocals are by Junior Marvin, who has a slinky, soulful vibe that moves along just right with the rhythms. Aston Barrett co-leads the group with Marvin – and titles include "Liberty", "Trip", "Dancing Boys", "Sweet Cry Freedom", "Out Of Exile", "Bad Mind People", "My Friend", "Nothin' For Nothin'", "Live And Love", "Rock On, Be Strong", and "Could You Be Loved". Nice reissue – in book-like cover, with new liner notes – and bonus tracks that include 6 remixes of "My Friend" – including a "toast rap" and "extended toast rap"! CD

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet Jamaican harmony! Harmony groups form a major piece of the Jamaican music tapestry, and Soul Jazz casts their Studio One-centered spotlight on one of the finest batches of Jamaican ensemble soul around! Covering everything from the rocksteady years on up through the late roots era, the groups showcased here deliver smoothly harmonized numbers under Cosxsone Dodd's deft direction, with only a few hewing towards the more raw sound favored by some of the rootsier ensembles, but all over easy Studio One rocking grooves. 19 dynamite numbers in all, with full annotation as with other releases in this Soul Jazz series, including "Solid Foundation" by the Righteous Flames, "Things A Come Up To Bump" by the Bassies, "You Will Never Know" by the Mad Lads, "What Is It" by the Consumates, "The Struggle" by the Viceroys, "Get In The Groove" by the Heptones, "Pick Up The Pieces" by the Royals, "Jah Jah Go Before Us" by the Gladiators, "Love & Affection" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, "Down Presser International" by the Stingers, "Baby Why" by the Cables, "The Pressure Is On" by the Purpleites, "Cheating & Lying" by the Silvertones and more!
