Essential – probably Marley's most well known work. This is his breakthrough 3rd album, just after Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh left the group, replaced by the female harmony group the I-Threes. Not nearly as slick as some of his other Island recordings, this one was still recorded in Jamaica, at Harry J's with the amazing Wailers rhythm section Carlton & Aston Family Man Barrett. Includes the classics "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman, No Cry", "Rebel Music", "Natty Dread" and "Talkin' Blues". Studio One/Heartbeat, Early/Mid 60s. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Prime early Marley, excellent ska and rocksteady numbers cut for Coxsone Dodd in the years preceding his dread conversion. The Wailers' star was shining brightly even at this early point, with Marley, Tosh and Livingston rendering some of the finest seminal Jamaican grooves ever cut for Studio One, and that's no mean feat! 41 (!) tracks in all, including "This Train", "Simmer Down", "I Am Going Home", 'Mr Talkative", "Go Jimmy Go", "I Need You", "True Confession", "Lonesome Feelings", "There She Goes", "Diamond Baby", 'Where's The girl For Me", "Hooligan Ska", "One Love", "Love & Affection", "And I Love Her (alternate take)", "Rude Boy", "I'm Still Waiting", "Ska Jerk", "Wages Of Love", "Cry To Me", "When The Well Runs Dry", "What Am I Supposed To Do", "Bend Down Low", "Freedom Time" and "Rocking Steady (alternate take)". New Bob Marley & The WailersKaya ... CD
Island, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet grooves from the great Bob Marley – a set cut at a time when Marley was really riding his international fame – and able to create the kind of music that reached out way more than conventional reggae! The Kingston roots of the sound are still very firmly in place – but there's also a more globally-expansive vision here too – partly the tight production on the music, partly the warm feelings that ebb and flow throughout the entire set – a vibe that's very different than American soul, and which has turned out to be surprisingly encompassing over the years. Titles include "Is This Love", "Running Away", "Kaya", "Satisfy My Soul", "Easy Skanking", "Sun Is Shining", "She's Gone", "Misty Morning", "Crisis", and "Time Will Tell". CD

New Bob Marley & The WailersRastaman Vibration ... CD
Island/Tuff Gong, 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A later effort from Robert Nesta Marley, though nowhere near past his prime. By this point in his career a lot of purists were criticizing Marley for crossing over too far, but there is no shortage of either conscious lyric and intent, nor heavy, rootsy rhythms here. The hit was "Roots, Rock, Reggae", but cuts like "Crazy Baldhead","Rat Race" and "Night Shift" hit just as hard. Also includes "Positive Vibration", 'Who The Cap Fit", "Cry To Me", "Johnny Was" and "Want More". This reissue includes and 11th bonus track, "Jah Live". CD

New Bob Marley & The WailersSoul Rebels ... LP
Trojan, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice collection of early Bob Marley & The Wailers singles – all produced by Lee Perry! The music's a great meeting of two important reggae talents – quite different than both in later years, especially Marley – as the music has a great rawness that would get glossed over in Bob's years with Island, when he would go on to become an international star! The cuts were recorded at Randy's, and titles include "Soul Rebel", "Try Me", "It's Alright", "No Sympathy", "My Cup", "Soul Almighty", "Rebel's Hop", "Corner Stone", "Four Hundred Years", "No Water", "Reaction", and "My Sympathy". Accord, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A collection of crucial pre-Island Records material from Bob Marley – work that really helped shape the sound of Jamaican music in the 70s – and a surprisingly strong document of the artist at his early best! There's a bit less polish here – and maybe a bit less majesty, too – but Marley's clearly on the right track, and sounding great – on titles that include "Soul Rebel", "Hammer", "Mellow Moods", "There She Goes", "Touch Me", "You Can't Do That To Me", "How Many Times", and "Chances Are". Wailers BandMajestic Warriors (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1991. New Copy ... $16.99
Post-Bob Marley work from The Wailers – a set recorded for the mostly-soul Tabu label, but one that still carries on the spirit of their legacy of the 70s! Production is surprisingly faithful – very much what you'd expect an evolved Wailers to sound like a decade after the passing of Marley – and lead vocals are by Junior Marvin, who has a slinky, soulful vibe that moves along just right with the rhythms. Aston Barrett co-leads the group with Marvin – and titles include "Liberty", "Trip", "Dancing Boys", "Sweet Cry Freedom", "Out Of Exile", "Bad Mind People", "My Friend", "Nothin' For Nothin'", "Live And Love", "Rock On, Be Strong", and "Could You Be Loved". Nice reissue – in book-like cover, with new liner notes – and bonus tracks that include 6 remixes of "My Friend" – including a "toast rap" and "extended toast rap"! CD

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $14.99
Sweet Jamaican harmony! Harmony groups form a major piece of the Jamaican music tapestry, and Soul Jazz casts their Studio One-centered spotlight on one of the finest batches of Jamaican ensemble soul around! Covering everything from the rocksteady years on up through the late roots era, the groups showcased here deliver smoothly harmonized numbers under Cosxsone Dodd's deft direction, with only a few hewing towards the more raw sound favored by some of the rootsier ensembles, but all over easy Studio One rocking grooves. 19 dynamite numbers in all, with full annotation as with other releases in this Soul Jazz series, including "Solid Foundation" by the Righteous Flames, "Things A Come Up To Bump" by the Bassies, "You Will Never Know" by the Mad Lads, "What Is It" by the Consumates, "The Struggle" by the Viceroys, "Get In The Groove" by the Heptones, "Pick Up The Pieces" by the Royals, "Jah Jah Go Before Us" by the Gladiators, "Love & Affection" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, "Down Presser International" by the Stingers, "Baby Why" by the Cables, "The Pressure Is On" by the Purpleites, "Cheating & Lying" by the Silvertones and more! New Bob Marley & OthersLegend Remixed ... CD
Island, 1970s/2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ballsy, yet perfectly respectful remixes of essential Bob Marley And The Wailers treasures – numbers from the quintessential Legend compilation and a couple more – done by a diverse roster that includes Thievery Corporation, Jim James, Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Photek, Z-Trip, Nickodemus, Pretty Lights and more! This is one of those contemporary revisits of classic material that works really well. Bob's vocals are so passionate, the songs so strong, and the choruses so memorable that they hold firm even to radical reinterpretations – but none of the remixers here run off of the rails. None are so foolish as to bury Bob Marley in their mixes, and it's for the most part a really endearing set! Includes "Waiting In Vain (Jim James Remix)", "Stir It Up (Ziggy Marley Remix)", "Get Up Stand Up (Thievery Corporation Remix)", "Exodus (Pretty Lights Remix)", "Jamming (Nickodemus And Zeb Remix)", "Punky Reggae Party (Z-Trip Remix)" featuring Lee Scratch Perry, "Buffalo Soldier *Stephen Marley Remix)" and more. 16 in all.
