Bob Marley & The WailersAfrican Herbsman ... LP
Trojan, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Great early work by Bob Marley & The Wailers – some of it produced by the legendary Lee Perry, too! Some of the tunes are early takes on later famous versions – but in a way, they're actually more definitive – in that they tie Marley back to the rich Kingston culture, instead of making him some beatific figure who emerged to greatness on his own. The rougher edge is a great contrast to Marley during the Island years – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Lively Up Yourself","Small Axe", "Duppy Conqueror", "African Herbsman", "Sun Is Shining", "Keep On Moving", "Don't Rock The Boat", and "Kaya". Bob Marley & The WailersSoul Rebels (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan, 1970. Used ... $12.99
A nice collection of early Bob Marley & The Wailers singles – all produced by Lee Perry! The music's a great meeting of two important reggae talents – quite different than both in later years, especially Marley – as the music has a great rawness that would get glossed over in Bob's years with Island, when he would go on to become an international star! The cuts were recorded at Randy's, and titles include "Soul Rebel", "Try Me", "It's Alright", "No Sympathy", "My Cup", "Soul Almighty", "Rebel's Hop", "Corner Stone", "Four Hundred Years", "No Water", "Reaction", and "My Sympathy". Bob Marley & The WailersSoul Revolution Part 2 – Dub (mono version – on colored vinyl) ... LP
JAD/Cleopatra, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Dub version of the original follow up to the Lee Perry/Bob Marley collaboration Soul Rebels – a that set presents many Marley classics in their early raw forms – and here in tripped out dub form! Though Marley and Perry would both go on to greater success, these early sides are some of their finest moments. Much, more than a mere early glimpses of a superstar in ascent – it's brilliant stuff! Tracks include "Keep On Moving", "Don't Rock My Boat", "Fussing & Fighting", "Put It On", "Duppy Conqueror (Version 4)", "Kaya", "Memphis", "African Herbsman" "Brain Washing" and "Sun Is Shining". In the original Upsetter mono mix, too! LP, Vinyl record album

New Bob Marley & The WailersNatty Dread ... LP
Island, 1974. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
Essential – probably Marley's most well known work. This is his breakthrough 3rd album, just after Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh left the group, replaced by the female harmony group the I-Threes. Not nearly as slick as some of his other Island recordings, this one was still recorded in Jamaica, at Harry J's with the amazing Wailers rhythm section Carlton & Aston Family Man Barrett. Includes the classics "Lively Up Yourself", "No Woman, No Cry", "Rebel Music", "Natty Dread" and "Talkin' Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

We'd be willing to wager Marley is perhaps the artist whose work has been released and re-released, repackaged and reformatted more than any other. This set features work recorded under Coxsone Dodd at Studio One: "Wings Of A Dove", "It Hurts To Be Alone", "I'm Still Waiting", "Who Feels It", "Do You Remember", "Dancing Shoes", "I Don't Need Your Love", "Lonesome Track", "Do You Feel The Same Way" and "The Ten Commandments Of Love". New Bob Marley & The WailersSurvival ... LP
Island, 1979. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Marley's answer record after the assassination attempt. While not as hardcore roots as our favorite LPs, we dig the heavy African influence throughout, plus there's some fairly radical politics in play here too. "Ambush The Night", "Ride Natty Ride", "One Drop" and "So Much Trouble" are the standouts. LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has unglued seams.)

New Bob Marley & The WailersJamaican Storm ... LP
Accord, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A collection of crucial pre-Island Records material from Bob Marley – work that really helped shape the sound of Jamaican music in the 70s – and a surprisingly strong document of the artist at his early best! There's a bit less polish here – and maybe a bit less majesty, too – but Marley's clearly on the right track, and sounding great – on titles that include "Soul Rebel", "Hammer", "Mellow Moods", "There She Goes", "Touch Me", "You Can't Do That To Me", "How Many Times", and "Chances Are". Wailers BandMajestic Warriors (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1991. New Copy ... $16.99
Post-Bob Marley work from The Wailers – a set recorded for the mostly-soul Tabu label, but one that still carries on the spirit of their legacy of the 70s! Production is surprisingly faithful – very much what you'd expect an evolved Wailers to sound like a decade after the passing of Marley – and lead vocals are by Junior Marvin, who has a slinky, soulful vibe that moves along just right with the rhythms. Aston Barrett co-leads the group with Marvin – and titles include "Liberty", "Trip", "Dancing Boys", "Sweet Cry Freedom", "Out Of Exile", "Bad Mind People", "My Friend", "Nothin' For Nothin'", "Live And Love", "Rock On, Be Strong", and "Could You Be Loved". Nice reissue – in book-like cover, with new liner notes – and bonus tracks that include 6 remixes of "My Friend" – including a "toast rap" and "extended toast rap"! CD

New Taj MahalMo' Roots ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-titled album – given that Taj Mahal's music is always pretty darn rootsy – and this time around, he's also adding in a bit of Jamaican roots too, thanks to production help from Bob Marley and Aston Barrett of The Wailers! The pair help Taj out on a few numbers, mixing in some reggae rhythms with his bluesy lead – another compelling combination of modes that marks the creative apex of Taj Mahal's years on Columbia. Titles include "Johnny Too Bad", "Big Mama", "Cajun Waltz", "Slave Driver", "Blackjack Davey", and "Desperate Lover". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some edge wear.)

Island, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Wailers LPs – as solid a statement as Marley had made, and to our ears, the finest moment of his later career. The album features classics like "Natural Mystic", "Three Little Birds", "One Love/People Get Ready" and the excellent, driving title track. LP, Vinyl record album
(Later pressing with barcode, including the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some wear.)

New Bob Marley & OthersLegend Remixed ... CD
Island, 1970s/2013. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ballsy, yet perfectly respectful remixes of essential Bob Marley And The Wailers treasures – numbers from the quintessential Legend compilation and a couple more – done by a diverse roster that includes Thievery Corporation, Jim James, Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Photek, Z-Trip, Nickodemus, Pretty Lights and more! This is one of those contemporary revisits of classic material that works really well. Bob's vocals are so passionate, the songs so strong, and the choruses so memorable that they hold firm even to radical reinterpretations – but none of the remixers here run off of the rails. None are so foolish as to bury Bob Marley in their mixes, and it's for the most part a really endearing set! Includes "Waiting In Vain (Jim James Remix)", "Stir It Up (Ziggy Marley Remix)", "Get Up Stand Up (Thievery Corporation Remix)", "Exodus (Pretty Lights Remix)", "Jamming (Nickodemus And Zeb Remix)", "Punky Reggae Party (Z-Trip Remix)" featuring Lee Scratch Perry, "Buffalo Soldier *Stephen Marley Remix)" and more. 16 in all. Sweet Jamaican harmony! Harmony groups form a major piece of the Jamaican music tapestry, and Soul Jazz casts their Studio One-centered spotlight on one of the finest batches of Jamaican ensemble soul around!
