Outsideinside hit not too long after the classic Vincebus Eruptem, and damned if we can determine why it's not as celebrated as the debut. That fuzzed out stomp of a sound is back in full effect, as are the titanic drums and an overall sound that uses an electric blues influence as a springboard into heavy cosmic space. Wonderful work from the little recorded Bronx Cheer – which combined uptempo acoustic jug band rock with an uncommonly catchy brand of unique tunefulness – tunes from their wonderful debut LP on Dawn Records, plus some very nice stuff from the unreleased second LP! A sweet 70s set from Jackie & Roy – just the kind of record that shows that their genius kept on growing and growing as the years went on! The album's a nice change from the fuller, freer sound of the pair's earlier 70s sides on CTI – but it's also not the straighter jazz of the 50s and 60s either – kind of a wonderful fusion of both eras, brought together in a really groovy way! Instrumentation is small combo throughout – piano from Roy, plus vibes, bass, and drums – all used in a sweetly swinging sort of way to match the melodic quality of the pair's vocals. Titles are a really well-selected batch of numbers – and include "Tiny Told Me", "Good & Rich", "The Runaround", "Born To Be Blue", "Waltz For Dana", "Cheerful Little Earful", and "Magic To Do".

And like that one, this features Jackie edging out towards modernist ideas, yet still swinging hard and fierce, with a firey boppish sensibility. The writing is great – and the players include Herbie Hancock on piano, Donald Byrd on trumpet, Butch Warren on bass, and a young Tony Williams on drums – making his recording debut on the album! The whole thing's tinged with dark and fragile emotion – and a heated sense of urgency that makes it one of McLean's best albums of the 60s – even though it was recorded then, and not issued by Blue Note until many years later! Titles include "Marney", "Dusty Foot", "Vertigo", and "Cheers" – plus one more track, "Formidable", from a 1959 session with Donald Byrd and Walter Davis.

The vibe gets wider and wider with each new entry in this classic series – no surprise, given the depth of sounds the Chicago steppers have been getting into! Some of the cuts here are almost of vintage that hits the starting time of the collection, while others reflect the growing love of 80s and 90s grooves among steppers – the careful selection of tracks from those decades, with a definite ear for a sweet mellow sound! Nobody creates beats that roll along under waves of electronics, samples and lush gentle acoustic instrumentation. This album finds Nobody a happier cat, more playful than his previous down tempo darker releases. This isn't cheerful rainbows and unicorns, but there are definitely elements of 60s pop blending perfectly with his jazzy organ manipulations, exploring different dynamics and emotions. Through the whole set there are wonderful dubby moments pushing through underneath his psychedelic breezes. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon drive or a late night at the bar sandwiched between Lee Perry and a starry evening.
