new Miles Davis — In Person Friday Night At The Blackhawk – Vol 1 ... LP
Columbia, 1961. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Legendary early live work from Miles Davis – one of the first examples on record of the way that Davis could really stretch out in a concert setting! The music's a bit more straight ahead than later live dates, but still pretty open and exploratory – and in addition to Davis' sparkling work on trumpet, the album also features some killer tenor lines from Hank Mobley – working here as a key part of Miles' group, and blowing with a hell of a lot of soul. Rhythm is by the rock-solid trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – and titles include "All Of You", "No Blues", "Bye Bye" and "Walkin".
(6 eye mono pressing. Cover has some ring & edge wear.)

new Ahmad Jamal — Sun Set (Ahmad Jamal At The Pershing/Ahmad Jamal At The Blackhawk) ... LP
Chess, Early 60s. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A 70s 2-fer that collects 2 live sides originally issued by Argo, then subsequently by Chess under the Cadet label. Classic Chicago piano jazz – featuring the very popular pianist Ahmad Jamal, recorded at the legendary Pershing Lounge, down at 63rd and Cottage Grove and at the equally legendary Blackhawk Lounge in San Francisco. For many years we didn't get these earlier sides by Jamal, prefering the later electric stuff, but you can see the blueprint of both those later sounds and the piano style that had such a huge impact on Miles here, in sets that cover lots jazz standards, including 'But Not For Me", "Moonlight In Vermont", "poinciana", "Woody'N You", "All The Things You Are", "Cherokee", "It Might As Well Be Spring" and quite a few more.
(Cover has ring & edge wear, two small seam splits, and some peeling inside the gatefold.)

new Cal Tjader — Jazz At The Blackhawk ... LP
Fantasy, 1957. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real standout session from Cal Tjader – a straight jazz side from the late 50s, recorded with a hip group that includes Vince Guaraldi on piano, Gene Wright on bass, and Al Torre on drums. Although Cal's possibly better-remembered for his Latin work of the time, the record is a good reminder that the Tjader approach to vibes worked equally well in a more standard jazz setting – especially when paired with the lightly lyrical piano genius of a young Vince Guaraldi! The set was captured live at the Blackhawk in San Francisco – practically home turf for Cal and the group – with a sound that's easy, laidback, and very nicely grooving! Titles include "Lover Come Back To Me", "Bill B", "Land's End", "Thinking Of You MJQ", and "Two For Blues Suite".
(OJC pressing.)

Steve Kuhn — Life's Magic (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blackhawk/Sunnyside, 1986. New Copy .... $14.99 16.98
A beautifully bright album from pianist Steve Kuhn – a superb 1986 session that matches his work on the keys with bass from Ron Carter and drums from Al Foster! The trio have a soulful swing right from the start – a vibe that you don't always hear on other albums from Kuhn, and which really unleashes some of his most lyrical sounds of the decade – a style that's as fresh and inventive as before, but which also soars a bit more strongly too – driven on with a warm feeling that definitely comes from the company of the group. The album's a stone classic in the Kuhn catalog – and titles include "Two By Two", "Ulla/Trance", "Jitterbug Waltz", "Little Old Lady", and "Yesterday's Gardenias". CD features two previously unreleased tracks – "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" and "Never Let Me Go".

Mongo Santamaria — Mighty Mongo ... LP
Fantasy, 1962. Very Good .... $16.99
An excellent obscure Mongo Santamaria album – and one that features a nice jazzy groove played by one of Mongo's best groups ever! The band features Joao Donato, the famous Brazilian pianist, doubling up on trombone on a number of tracks – something you never hear on his Brazilian albums! Other players include Pupi Legaretta on violin, Jose Chombo Silva on tenor, and Rolando Lozano on flute – plus percussion from Willie Bobo on timbales. The album's a live one – with some great Latin jazz energy – and titles include the tasty "Descarga At The Blackhawk", plus "Bluchanga", 'Sabor", and "Bacoso".
(Heavy 60s pressing. Cover has split spine and top seam.)

new Shelly Manne — Boss Sounds! ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
One of Shelly Manne's best records of the 60s – largely because the group's so great! Altoist Frank Strozier was playing with Shelly at the time, and his rich talents on the alto make the record almost worth seeking out for him alone – because here, Strozier's opening up his sound a lot more than in the early days – and going for strange phrasings, sharp edges, and other unusual twists that really add a lot more spice to the set than you might expect! The rest of the group features Conte Candoli, Russ Freeman, and Monty Budwig – and in a way, the record takes off from the energy of Shelly's classic Blackhawk sessions, but with even a bit more tightly dynamic sound. Titles include "Frank's Tune", "You Name It", "Margie", and "Idle One".

new Charlie Mariano & Others — Jazz Scene San Francisco – Modern Music From San Francisco/Charlie Mariano Sextet ... CD
Fantasy, Early/Mid 50s. New Copy .... $3.99 15.99 Out Of Stock
Incredible stuff! The CD features work from four seminal modern mid 50s groups – all recorded at the Blackhawk nightclub in San Francisco at the height of their powers. About half the CD features work by a young Charlie Mariano – playing here with a sextet that includes Dick Collins on trumpet and Richard Wyands on piano, both perfectly matched players for Charlie's young, icy, modern tone. Remaining tracks feature the Vince Guaraldi quartet with Jerry Dodgion on alto, the Dodgion Quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, and the Ron Crotty trio with Vince on piano and celeste. The collection of tracks is extremely well put together – as all tunes are united by a post-bop approach that looks strongly towards modern jazz, yet which never fails to swing. Great stuff – and an essential chapter of the emerging 50s underground. Titles include "After Coffee", "Ginza", "Calling Dr Funk", "My Friend Ethel", "The Nymph", "The Groove", and "Between 8th & 10th on Mission Street".
(CD case has a small cutout notch.)
