A pretty sublime album from Bill Evans – one that has him playing both Fender Rhodes and Steinway, overdubbed together, for an effect that's laidback and completely wonderful! The Fender Rhodes was a natural choice for Evans – given his fluid lyrical style, and on this set (and on his equally great record for MGM) Bill opens up with an approach that really suits him well. Each track features him shifting back and forth between electric and acoustic modes, dancing from one to the other in a way that makes the instruments come together beautifully – supported by some incredibly soulful bass work by Eddie Gomez, and drums by Marty Morrell. Titles include "Sugar Plum", "Funkallero", "Waltz for Debby", "TTT", "Re: Person I Knew", and "Comrade Conrad".

Sublime sounds from the later years of Bill Evans – and a recording that shows just how perfectly his piano talents were finding new heights of timing and tone! Many of the tracks here are relatively mellow, and often somewhat dark as well – moody, but not in a way that's negative at all – and instead a real showcase for the darker tones and deeper feelings that Evans continued to evolve into his music in these final stretches – carried off with superb sensitivity by Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums. The recording quality is wonderful – just perfect to capture the special quality of the performance – and titles on this first volume include "Stella By Starlight", "Gary's Theme", "MASH", "We Will Meet Again", "Letter To Evan", and "Noelle's Theme".

Tremendous work from Bill Evans – one of his rare non-trio sides of the 60s – and a stunning batch of tunes with backings from the mighty Claus Ogerman! Most of the tunes here are of classical origin, but they're recast by Evans and Ogerman with almost a soundtrack sensitivity – Bill's piano up front, moving spaciously at very much its own pace – none of the too-virtuoso styles of other 60s jazz-meets-classical players. And Ogerman's backings are also great too – hardly ever strong, and more just light shading amidst the notes of Bill's piano – beautifully sliding in to bring a nice level of warm to the tunes. Titles include a sublime reading of "Pavane", plus the tracks "Granadas", "Time Remembered", "Blue Interlude", "Elegy", and "My Bells".

Magical music from the very first note – the kind of record you need to hear if you've ever doubted the genius of Bill Evans! The sound here is subtle, and supple – but still often more revolutionary than that of the countless albums it inspired in years to come – and Evans is completely at home on the record, working with bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Paul Motian – both players who helped to re-invent the role of rhythm in the piano combo of the time! A pair of great Bill Evans albums for Verve – both a very good fit together! The cover of Empathy co-credits Bill Evans and Shelly Manne as the leader of the set – and that distinction's an important one – as the record has a slightly different feel than some of Bill's other 60s work for Verve! The sound is often a bit stronger, somewhat bolder – and although Manne's not a monster on the drums, he does have a way of directing the tunes that's a bit different than some of Evans' other piano-led albums. Bass is by Monty Budwig, who's nicely sensitive to the talents of both players – and there's almost an equally-weighted melodic feel to all three elements of the trio – which really rounds out the record nicely. Titles include "The Washington Twist", "Danny Boy", "Let's Go Back To The Waltz", "With A Song In My Heart", "Goodbye", and "I Believe In You". Simple Matter Of Conviction is a move into a more sophisticated vein than his earlier recordings! The album has him working with bassist Eddie Gomez, a hugely talented bassist that would be one of Bill's best partners during this period, and a player who added a nice dose of soul to the proceedings. The drummer is Shelly Manne, who's pretty nice, too – and really shows off some of his more sophisticated shadings here in the presence of Evans and Gomez – similar to his work on the great Empathy album. Tracks are shortish, but filled with imagination – and titles include "Unless It's You", "These Things Called Changes", "Stella By Starlight", and "A Simple Matter Of Conviction".

Excellent 60s work by Stan Getz – featuring two of his greatest sessions ever! One disc features some of Getz's best straight jazz of the 60s – played in a perfectly matched quartet with Bill Evans on piano, a perfect choice for Getz's lyrical soulful tone at the time. Titles include "Funkallero", "Melinda", "Grandfather's Waltz", and "Night & Day". The other disc features the classic Sweet Rain LP – a totally solid jazz album, with a quality level that was hardly ever matched by Stan again! The tracks are all long, sweeping, and very spiritual – and the group's a soulful batch of freer players (Chick Corea, Ron Carter, and Grady Tate), who really open Stan up, and drive him to give out some of the best solos of his careers. All tracks are long, and the album includes an amazing version of Corea's "Litha", plus the cuts "Windows", "Con Alma", and "O Grande Amor". One of our favorite jazz albums ever – no fooling!

Side one features a trio set with Teddy Wilson – but side two features Gerry Mulligan joining the trio on "Sweet Georgia Brown" – then a set by a group with Gerry's quartet, which also includes Bob Brookmeyer!

One of the few larger group Bill Evans sessions from the later years – an album that features sax and flute from Larry Schneider and trumpet from Tom Harrell – in addition to core trio instrumentation from Bill on piano, Marc Johnson on bass, and Joe LaBarbera on drums. The added horns really make the session sparkle – and although those players aren't on every number in the record, when they do show up they really help change the sound nicely from overly familiar Evans trio modes. Bill plays a bit of electric piano on the set – especially beautifully on the track "Only Child" – and other titles include "Comrade Conrad", "Peri's Scope", "We Will Meet Again", "Bill's Hit Tune", "Laurie", "Five", and "For All We Know".

Everybody Digs Bill Evans – or at least it certainly seems that way from the cover endorsements by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, and Ahmad Jamal – but the real proof is in the record, and the set is a great one from Bill's classic years on Riverside! Evans is at the peak of his early powers here – working with a straightforward rhythm combo that features Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums – but still hitting those beautifully fluid, beautifully spacious lines that set his playing apart from most who'd come before him. Tracks include 3 solo numbers – "Lucky To Be Me", "Peace Piece", and the very short "Epilogue" – plus trio tracks "Night & Day", "Minority", "Tenderly", and "Oleo". Bill's working here with a sound as sensitive and picturesque as the cover image – never pushing things too hard, but letting each tune unfold organically in waves of sound few other players could conjure up! One of Bill Evans' landmark sessions with the young bassist Scott LaFaro – a player who made key contributions on every record he touched, then left this earth far too soon in his career! The live session's a perfect demonstration of the way that the Evans trio format not only re-worked the use of the piano in jazz, but also the bass and drums as well – as LaFaro's deeply evocative playing is paired with the equally fresh drum work of Paul Motian – heard here at his youthful early best, before some of his contributions to jazz had become cliche in the hands of other players. The session's especially noteworthy for the presence of drummer Larry Bunker – a great player who worked on countless recordings, both jazz and non-jazz, but who hits a new level here with the Evans Trio – one that almost matches that of Paul Motian for his sensitivity and lyrical interplay with Evans' piano and the bass of Chuck Israels! Titles include "Blues In F", "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "The Boy Next Door", "Swedish Pastry", and "Round Midnight" and the bonus track "All The Things You Are".

Fantastic stuff – and one of our favorite lost sessions from the 70s! The album's a completely unique work by pianist Bill Evans album – one that features him playing both electric and acoustic piano over stunning arrangements by Claus Ogerman! The sound is indescribably beautiful, with a range of moments that span a number of styles – all of them dark and moody. Evans' playing is at that complex late stage, and Ogerman's orchestrations are completely sympathetic, never intrusive, and offer a brilliant showcase for haunting lines of dark, introspective genius from Evans. In a way, we'd compare this one to some of the more baroque CTI sessions – or to later work in recent generations by artists like Chris Bowden! The album features 2 different movements of the larger "Symbiosis" suite – divided up into a total of 5 long tracks in all!

An interesting early side by Cannonball that captures him before he'd really found his voice – and when the folks at Mercury still didn't really know what to do with him. The record's a tightly arranged set of tracks from Duke Ellington's musical "Jump For Joy" – with arrangements by Bill Russo, and small group playing that includes Emmett Berry, Bill Evans, Barry Gabraith, Jimmy Cobb, and a small string section. The sound's actually quite haunting – and Cannon's alto solos remind us more of some of the best "with strings" soloing heard on Verve in the early 50s than they do his later soul jazz classics on Riverside or Capitol. That's ok with us, though – because the session's still got a lot to offer in that respect, and Cannonball handles the solos wonderfully! Titles include "Bli Blip", "Just Squeeze Me", "Nothin", and "The Tune Of The Hickory Stick".

A jazzy portrait of Cannonball Adderley in his early soul jazz prime – oddly one that doesn't feature his regular quintet lineup, but which more than makes up for that lack with a batch of players that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Bill Evans on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums! Given the personnel, the record's almost kind of a transition from Cannon's brief time with Miles Davis into his tighter more soul-inflected group to come – and Evans' piano provides an especially spacious sensibility here, one that marks the time spent with Miles nicely. Titles include "Nardis", "A Little Taste", "Minority", and "Blue Funk". CD features 3 bonus tracks!

The cover of this one makes it look like a no-name leaderless session, but this one actually features some great work by some very hip players! Half the album features vibist Teddy Charles leading a group of modernists that includes Hal McKusick, Frank Socolow, Bill Russon, Bob Brookmeyer, Mal Waldron, and Donald Byrd – on tracks that have a bluesy base, but a bit of an edge to them. The other half features Manny Albam leading a combo with Al Cohn, Teo Macero, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Phil Woods, and Eddie Costa. The session was done to showcase the talents of 4 of the best modern arrangers of the late 50s – Manny Albam, Bill Russon, Teo Macero, and Teddy Charles – all of whom contribute some great charts to a set of tracks that includes "Swinging Goatsherd Blues", "East Hampton Blues", "Blues In The Night", "Night Crawlers", and "Blues For Amy".

Nice and rarely seen trio side from under-recorded Chicago pianist Anderson. He plays here with Bill Lee and either Walter Perkins or Philly Joe Jones on drums, in a trio that made the core of the rhythm section on Frank Strozier's excellent Jazzland date, Long Night. The group is in fine form here, running through both standards and originals, and though Anderson's name isn't as well known as many other pianists, it ought to be, and he was no stranger to other Windy City jazz greats such as Johnny Griffin. Imagine a cross between Bill Evans and Elmo Hope, and you might get a picture of where he's coming from, though Anderson's voice is all his own, weaving some nice sinuous lines on a set that leans heavily on ballads here, including "You'd Be Nice To Come Home To", "My Funny Valentine" and the originals "See You Saturday" & the title track.

Smooth, soulful piano from David Benoit – sounding stronger than ever here in a collection of classics recorded for the GRP label! Although the setting's often a bit electric, David plays acoustic throughout – bringing in a core sense of humanity to the tracks, and often a strong sense of individuality as his leads and solos echo out from the smoother backings. The set list is overflowing with tracks – 18 numbers in all – and titles include "Houston", "I Remember Bill Evans", "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Saturdays", "Some Other Sunset", "Getting Ready", "Gothic Jazz Dance", "Linus & Lucy", and "Reflections".

A reissue of one of Blakey's best non-Blue Note sides from the late 50s, a killer album that sports a great lineup of the Jazz Messengers that included Jackie McLean, Johnny Griffin, Bill Hardman, Sam Dockery and Spanky DeBrest. The three of them sparkle and shine with the sort of brilliance that Blakey's leadership brings to the group, and they wail their way through a 13 minute long reading of "Night In Tunisia", with excellent solos all around, and the other cuts "Theory Of Art", "Couldn't It Be You?", "Evans", and "Off The Wall". This reissue adds the bonus number "Social Call" recorded for RCA at very nearly the same time, but with a larger group that features Wynton Kelly in place of Sam Dockery, plus the addition of Lee Morgan, Sahib Shihab, Melba Liston and Cecil Payne in the horn section.

Exactly the kind of record to show why we love Japanese piano trio sessions so much – a sweet 80s date from lyrical genius Iwasaki Daisuke! The album's got a relatively understated feel at first, but really grabs us once it gets going – with a mix of complicated solo lines and subtle, soulful warmth – a gentle balance that's clearly inherited from the legacy of Bill Evans – yet pushed into richly expressive directions here of its own! Daisuke's a hell of a painter on the keys – poetic, yet never with too many flourishes – and working with a subtle sense of darkness that's echoed by the bass of Hideo Kanazawa and drums of Hideaki Sekine. Titles include "Mass Ave 5am", "Tiny Souvenir", "Never Say Goodbye", "Star Crossed Lovers", and "Surf Mail".

A magnificent set from the team of Art Farmer and Jim Hall – one of those rare pairings in jazz that somehow comes off sounding even way better than the sum of its parts – and that's saying a lot, given that the parts here are already pretty darn great! Farmer's flugelhorn and Hall's guitar create these wonderful shapes in sound – softly coming together with a vibe that's very modern, yet also soulful – gently swinging while still experimenting – with a combination that's completely wonderful! Think of Bob Brookmeyer and Clark Terry, or Bill Evans and Jim Hall – and you'll be somewhere in the territory of these magically unique sounds – augmented with some gentle rhythm work by Steve Swallow on bass and Walter Perkins on drums. Titles include "By Myself", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Sometime Ago", and "My Kinda Love".

The heady second album from Bill Fay – much more introspective and moodier than his first outing for Deram, and a session done in tight collaboration with British guitar legend Ray Russell! Russell's got Fay working here with a much smaller group than on the first album – a collection of jazz-influenced players that includes Nick Evans on trombone, Tony Roberts on reeds, and Alan Rushton on drums – all working with Russell's guitar in an intimate, slightly folksy setting. Fay's songwriting and vocals are darker than before – as can easily be told from the titles of tunes like "Don't Let My Marigolds Die", "Dust Filled Room", "Pictures Of Adolf Again", and "Til The Christ Come Back". But somehow, Fay manages to pull the whole thing off beautifully – with none of the cliches or heavy-handed styles you might expect, really working in a transcendent mode that reminds us of the best of early Leonard Cohen.

Wonderful lost work from the great Benny Golson – and some of the hippest jazz you can find in a large format group! Golson's at his modernist best here, and he's leading a tentet that includes Eric Dolphy on alto, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Grachan Moncur on trombone, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Bill Evans on piano – with a sound that's tightly arranged, but still punctuated by warm emotional passages by the star soloists. The tracks are familiar – "Out Of Nowhere", "Quicksilver", "Stella By Starlight", "Autumn Leaves" – but wait until you hear how Golson put them together!

Great early work from the amazing Vince Guaraldi – an album issued in the 60s on the wave of his rising fame, but which was most likely recorded a few years earlier! The group here is Vince's key early trio with Eddie Duran on guitar – grooving with Vince in drumless splendor that takes most of its rhythmic cues from Guaraldi's inherent sense of groove on the keys of the piano – a simple, spacious touch that's almost more magnificent here in its early simplicity than it is in later years. There's a slight influence of 50s modernism on the keys – bits of John Lewis or Bill Evans – but the warmth and lyricism of the overall set mark the record clearly as Vince's own musical vision. Titles include "Autumn Leaves", "Fenwyck Farfel", "Yesterdays", "Room At The Bottom", and "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing".

Great recent work from legendary bassist Chuck Israels – a player known for his famous work with Bill Evans, but a musician who's just kept on growing over the years! This set's got a great 50s modern jazz vibe – bass by Israels and guitar from co-leader Axel Hagen – in a setting that also features drums from Peter Kahlenborn and tenor and clarinet from John Ruocco. The bass and guitar often take the lead – in ways that echo the vibe of an older Jim Hall-styled session – and when clarinet's in the mix, there's a wonderfully open style to the record – not exactly the Jimmy Giuffre trio on Atlantic, but not far off either! Titles include "Koko", "Slow Freight", "The Boy Next Door", "Chaconne A Son Gout", "The Sweetest Sounds", and "Minor Tributary".

After the success of Jarrett's Standards Trio recording, he revisits the format with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette – the first ever live recordings of this incredible trio in action! Like the studio recordings, this set features roomy, lyrical readings of standards, in a way, reminiscent of classic Bill Evans approaches to similar material – with a relaxed, moody spin on the proceedings. The tried-and-true material is given fresh life by the players, who roll from a looser dynamic with each player having their moments, to some tighter interplay in the heart of the tunes – and the appreciative French audience helping with the mood! 6 numbers: "Stella By Starlight", "The Wrong Blues", "Falling In Love With Love", "To Young To Go Steady", "The Way You Look tonight" and "The Old Country".

A sweet Japanese piano trio session from the 70s – named after the ballad "Emily", which features prominently in the lineup – but handled with a depth of sound that goes way past that familiar number! The core group is the trio of pianist Rune Ofwerman – with Gunnar Johnson on bass and Egil Johansen on drums – a combo with a fluid, open style that really sets Scott free on clarinet – a lot like his late 50s recordings to come with Bill Evans. Titles include "Blues For Ava" in both vocal and instrumental modes – plus "Swingin In Sweden", "Night In Tunisia", "Walkin", "I Can't Get Started", and "All The Things You Are".

One of Tadd Dameron's last true jazz sides – featuring the bop maestro composing, arranging, and conducting for a large group that includes Bill Evans, Johnny Griffin, Joe Wilder, Clark Terry, and Philly Joe Jones. There's a bit of Ellington in the album – with somber washes of mood and color, in a manner that was always one of Dameron's strongest suits – and the quality of the players, especially Evans, really adds a lot to the album. Scott's solos are incredibly open-ended – and he's backed by a group of hip players that includes Henry Grimes, Bill Evans, Paul Motian, and Sahib Shihab. Knepper's pretty good, too – but he lacks some of the fire he has in his recordings with Mingus. Titles include "The Chant", "The Explorer", "Body & Soul", and "Portrait Of Ravi", which shows his early interest in Latin music.

Some of the greatest Miles Davis material ever recorded – and not really ever officially issued as an album until this collection! The recordings are from the magical year of 1958, a time when Miles was working in the Kind Of Blue mode – on the album of the same name, one of his all-time standout classics. The work on this set is in a very similar spirit – recorded by a sextet that includes the rhythm section of Jimmy Cobb, Paul Chambers, and a young Bill Evans, who brings a magically modal feel to the album that really gives it an edge. Added to that are the saxophones of John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley, blowing together in two ends of the soul spectrum, really stretching the color palette from Miles' usual work. Miles himself seems very inspired by the company, and works with plenty of space to allow the saxophonists to stretch out in wonderful solos – and Evans himself is simply amazing, working wonderfully in the setting, making us wish he'd recorded more group dates like this one! The first 3 tracks on the set were briefly issued on the flipside of the Jazz Track album (an obscure Columbia LP that also included 10 songs from the soundtrack to Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud), and a few others on later live LPs – but this is the first time the material from that group has appeared together as a full album. Includes stellar versions of "Stella By Starlight", "Green Dolphin Street", "Fran Dance", "My Funny Valentine", "Oleo", and "Love For Sale".

The decoy here might be in the rhythms, which are often electric, but still played live – handled by Robert Irving III on many tracks, with a cool 80s fusion sound that's mighty nice! The style of the album's a nice change from the Miles groove of the 70s – a bit leaner, with almost a Weather Report influence at times, but far less jamming – and still prone to the darker tones that always make Davis' music of these later years surprisingly good. Al Foster handles acoustic drums on some tracks, and other players include Bill Evans on soprano sax and Mino Cinelu on percussion – on titles that include "Decoy", "Robot 415", "Code MD", "Freaky Deaky", "What It Is", "That's Right", and "That's What Happened".

Groundbreaking work from the legendary Ahmad Jamal – not just in his own career, but in live jazz in general! The album's a classic recording of Jamal's trio with Israel Crosby on bass and Vernell Fournier on drums – captured at the Pershing Lounge on the south side of Chicago, where Jamal was clearly wowing the crowd with his amazing talents on the piano. The groove here is sublimely fluid and soulful – clearly the next wave of expression on the piano in the 50s, and as important to the Chicago scene as Bill Evans was to that of New York at the time. The recording quality is wonderful – clear enough to capture the subtleties of Crosby's amazing bass, and the lightly tippling sound of Fournier's drums – and titles include a classic extended reading of "Poinciana", plus "What's New", "But Not For Me", and "No Greater Love".

Great work from one of the most compelling trombonists of the 50s! Jimmy Knepper is probably best known for his excellent work on some of Charles Mingus' best records – but this set from 1957 shows that Knepper was also an extremely capable (if under-recorded) leader in his own right! The album is one of the rarest Bethlehem sides – and it features Knepper leading a crack group that includes Bill Evans, Gene Quill and drummer Dannie Richmond, making a rare non-Mingus appearance here! The tracks are shortish, and a number of them are standards, but the group swings nicely, and Knepper's tone is nice and edgey on most tracks. Titles include "Avid Admirer", "Close As Pages In A Book", "Ogling Ogre", and "Idol Of The Flies".

Some great 50s work from modernist George Russell – an expanded version of his work for the RCA label at the time! The first 12 tracks, plus 2 alternates, are from the Jazz Workshop album issued under Russell's name for RCA – A nice little set that's not as arch-modern as some of his later work, with strong playing in kind of that east coast chamber jazz mode that you'd find in some of the other RCA sides of the time. Players include Art Farmer, Hal McKusick, Bill Evans, Barry Galbraith, and Joe Harris – and the tracks are mostly originals, written with slight touches of whimsy, but less of the indulgence on that front as you'd hear on west coast material. Titles include "Witch Hunt", "The Sad Sargeant", "Ballad Of Hix Blewitt", "Knights of The Steamtable", "Jack's Blues", and "Night Sound". Added to these 14 tracks are an additional 4 from the Hal McKusick Jazz Workshop album on RCA – all tunes penned by Russell, and played by a group that's essentially the same as those on Russell's album, with a few slight personnel shifts. Titles include "Lydian Lullaby", "Miss Clara", and "The Day John Brown Was Hanged".

Obscure work from Kenny Burrell – material originally issued by Muse Records, most of it with a very laidback feel – as you'd guess from the title! The original sides were produced by Helen Keane, who'd done some of Bill Evans' greatest sets – and who had a real ear for the mellower side of the jazz spectrum. And for the record, she's got Kenny playing in a trio format that's very spacious – with only gentle accompaniment on bass and drums, and most of the sound on the set coming from the strings of Kenny's guitar. Following in the gentle spirit of the set, Kenny even plays an acoustic guitar on some numbers – making for a very different sound than usual. Some tracks are quite long, really letting Kenny open up on his solos – and titles include "So Little Time", "All Blues", "In A Mellow Tone", "In The Still Of The Night", "Tenderly", "Listen To The Dawn", and "You & The Night & The Music".

The full story of Miles Davis at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958 – an album that expands out the original half-album release of this material from the set that Miles shared with Thelonious Monk! The first half of the record features the three tracks that appeared on Miles & Monk At Newport – and the remaining material joins it here for the first time in one date – making for a well-rounded package that finally tells the whole tale of the group's performance on July 3, 1958! The lineup here is right in the Kind Of Blue mode – Cannonball Adderley on alto, John Coltrane on tenor, Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – but the overall sound is a bit looser and freer, much more turned towards the solo spotlight focus that often characterized Miles Davis' live work. Coltrane's solos alone are worth the price of admission – nicely sharp-edged, with a sound that he didn't always show on his own albums until the 60s – and titles include "Ah Leu Cha", "Straight No Chaser", "Fran Dance", "Two Bass Hit", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "The Theme".

A beautiful little group – one who play with a lot more subtlety than you'd guess from the "freedom" in their name! The ensemble's a perfect match of pianist Francesco Tristano, bassist Carlo De Rosa, and drummer Francisco Mora Catlett – a really well-balanced trio that seems to have equal focus on the work of all three instruments, both from a melodic and rhythmic perspective! At times, the percussion of Catlett really seems to open up the tracks – but at others, the sensitive piano lines of Tristano, with almost a Bill Evans sort of care – move things along in this mellow glow that's totally great. Tracks are all long, and develop beautifully with this balance of sonic tenderness and rhythmic pulse – and titles include "Barasuayo", "5xmax", "Dean", "C2izo", "Blue People", and "Earth Tones".

Bassist Scott LaFaro left a very big mark on jazz – especially given his few short years on this planet – recording seminal sides with players like Bill Evans and Hampton Hawes – both of whom were really transformed by his work on bass! This set brings together some rare material from the late 50s – three appearances on the Stars Of Jazz TV show, including two with Victor Feldman on piano and Stan Levy on bass, and one more with Cal Tjader on vibes and Vince Guaraldi on piano! The set also features a nice long rehearsal track, recorded at the LA store Recordville – also with the Feldman trio – and titles include "Rehearsal Blues"," Bebop", "Flamingo", "Deep In A Dream", "Crow's Nest", "Liz Anne", "Tumbaro", and "You Are My Lucky Star".

Beautiful work from Seung-Hee – a vocalist who splits her time between Korea and North America, and who has a scope of sound that really lives up to her global stance! Seung-Hee has a really classic approach – not 50s torch, but that really inventive period of the 70s, when female jazz vocalists were really breaking free – finding new ways to inflect their notes, and often adding their own words too – in ways that made the music even more expressive than before! Seung-Hee's got a great way with a tune, and turns in some excellent compositions here – including a few set to music by Bill Evans and Charlie Haden – often with that freewheeling mix of breezy and soulful styles that we love in our favorite European jazz vocalists from years back. This album's a great step forward for the singer – and may well put her in a lineage that includes the best work by singers like Sheila Jordan, Monica Linges, and Karin Krog. Titles include "Sketc Part 2", "I'll Be Here", "Winter & Then", "Valparaiso", "An Elliptical Note", "By The Sea", "Visions", and a version of Edo Lobo's "Pra Dizer Adeus".

A very interesting batch of tracks – one tune apiece by each of the artists named in the title, recorded between the years 1970 and 1973 at the Festival Ljublijana, in Yugoslavia. Bill Evans performs a long, and straight reading of Miles Davis' "Nardis" with a trio that includes Eddie Gomez on bass and Tony Oxly on drums; Karin Krog sings a spare version of "Round Midnight", with only the bass of Arild Andersen for accompaniment; and Archie Shepp blows freely on a version of Grachan Moncur III's "Sonny's Back", in a group with Dave Burrell, Don Garrett, and Muhammad Ali. Perhaps the most striking track, though, is "The Creators" by Bobby Hutcherson – played with his group that included Harold Land and Hal Galper, and performed in an 18 minute reading that builds beautifully, into the dancing soul jazz sound that was Hutcherson's best contribution to jazz at the time!

A wonderful album from George Russell – and a refreshing change from his overly-academic modernist work! The session's an unusual one – a musical portrait of New York City, performed with an all-star cast that includes John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Max Roach, and Hal McKusick – all working together to paint tones on the tunes that George has crafted to set up his scene of New York in the 50s. Most importantly, though, Jon Hendricks acts as the narrator of the album – talking and scatting in hipster mode, laying out a bit of beat rapportage about the Big Apple, all done in a very cool 50s style that's a bit different from his own vocal work. Titles include "Manhattan", "Big City Blues", "Manhattan-Rico", and "A Helluva Town".

Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Evans himself plays bass for the record – using a very funky bottom sound – and the set also features some wicked vibes from the legendary Billy Wooten, working away from his Nineteenth Hole group on a rare major label date! The sound is blacksploitation soundtrack, part Curtom funk – and titles include the great originals "Pie Daddy's Dream", "Wado City", "Angela My Sister", and the great "Patutu" – which was done by the Soulful Strings – plus a few nice covers like "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Ellie's Love Theme", by Isaac Hayes.

A masterpiece – one of 2 crazy albums in which Woody Herman's late band meets the Cadet arrangements of Richard Evans. You might think the combination wouldn't work – Woody's big band flourishes meeting up with Evans' compressed soulful grooves – but gosh, the record is simply incredible, and it's one that we'd never part with in a million billion years! Worth it alone for the version of Edu Lobo's "Pontieo", but there's lots of other nice stuff – like "I Say A Little Prayer", "Hush", "Keep On Keepin On", and "Light My Fire".

One of the grooviest albums ever cut by Richard Evans' Soulful Strings, and a tasty batch of tracks written by Gamble & Huff, years before they started the Philly International label. The tracks are great, with the kind of arrangements that made Evans a legend in the Chi soul scene – and most of the titles have some very tasty solos by the likes of Billy Wooten, Cash McCall, and Phil Upchurch. The lively writing of the Gamble & Huff team provides a perfect foil for Evans' sophisticated approach to soul – and we almost wonder if it was hearing him do these string-heavy versions of their songs that made Gamble & Huff go for a similar approach on their groundbreaking 70s soul work! Evans himself plays bass for the record – using a very funky bottom sound – and the set also features some wicked vibes from the legendary Billy Wooten, working away from his Nineteenth Hole group on a rare major label date! The sound is blacksploitation soundtrack, part Curtom funk – and titles include the great originals "Pie Daddy's Dream", "Wado City", "Angela My Sister", and the great "Patutu" – which was done by the Soulful Strings – plus a few nice covers like "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Ellie's Love Theme", by Isaac Hayes.

A nice 70s reissue two-fer that brings together two sides of jazz King Curtis cut for Prestige. The first set, The New Scene Of King Curtis finds him accompanied by Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Oliver Jackson – plus trumpet from Nat Adderley, billed on the back as "Little Brother" for contractual reasons! The 5 tracks are long and open, with less of King's tenor tricks, and more of a laidback Gene Ammons-ish style of blowing: "Little Brother Soul", "In A Funky Groove", "Have You Heard", "Da Duh Duh" and "Willow Weep For Me". The second LP is another rare early King Curtis jazz session – cut a few months later, but still before he settled down to his tight short soul instrumental recordings for Atlantic. The record is very much in the Prestige soul jazz style of the early 60s with Curtis set up nicely in a group that features Nat Adderley and Wynton Kelly again, but with Sam Jones and Belton Evans in the rhythm section, and it holds together in an easy grooving way. There's 6 tracks in this set: "Soul Meeting", "Lazy Soul", "All The Way", "Jeep's Blues", "What Is This Ting Called Love?" and "Do You Have Soul Now?".

A warmly crafted set that Jon Lucien recorded on his own after bigger fame at Columbia and RCA – and a nice little record that shows that the Lucien magic was still very much in place! The set's got a gentler groove than some of his earlier records – less ambitiously jazzy, and almost more of a personal statement from Jon – recorded in a mode that mixes his own vocals and keyboards with some larger backings conducted by Richard Evans, Michel Colombier, and Billy Byers. All tracks arranged, composed, and produced by Jon – and titles include "Together As One", "Sempre Maria", "Tell Me You Love Me", "How About Tonight", "I Like It", and "Too Damn Hot".

Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". CD features 4 bonus alternate takes, too!

The greatest session ever recorded by pianist Ronnie Kole – recorded for the Louisiana label Paula, but with all the feel of a Chess/Cadet session from the late 60s! All of this is no surprise, since Ronnie himself was an ex-Chicagoan, living in New Orleans – and the album's arrangements are handled by Richard Evans, the man responsible for some of the best work at Chess in the 60s. The set's very much in the vein of the Ray Bryant and Ramsey Lewis albums for Cadet that were handled by Evans – with hard left-hand piano in the front, and some bouncing arrangements in the back to give the set a nice syncopated kick! Includes a great version of Evans' "Leija", plus the tracks "RK's Boogie", "Slaughter On 10th Ave", "Sabre Dance", "Dark Eyes", and a great cover of "Ode To Billie Joe".
