new Betty EverettThere'll Come A Time ... LP
Uni, 1969. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great near-lost slice of Betty Everett's career – material recorded for Uni Records, in the years after her first big hits on Vee Jay! The sound here is a lot more soulful than on earlier albums – more grown-up and sophisticated, yet also retaining the best sweeter touches that made her great in the first place. The album's got a number of tasty originals – including the title cut "There'll Come A Time", Curtis Mayfield's "Hold On", and the cuts "Maybe", and "You're Falling In Love".
(Cover has a cutout hole and some wear.)

Various — Goffin & King – A Gerry Goffin & Carole King Song Collection 1961 to 1967 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy .... $15.99
The full scope of the mighty songwriting talents of Carole King and Gerry Goffin – a much-chronicled 60s team who had plenty of troubles of their own, but who brought some really amazing music to the world at the time! The package features songs in a variety of genres – soul, pop, rock, country, and more – including some appearing here on CD for the first time ever, and plenty more that aren't just the obvious Goffin/King hits! The CD features a huge booklet – nearly 25 pages in all – with track-by-track notes on the tunes, as well as on the songwriting team – and as with some of Ace's other explorations into 60s pop powerhouses, the single disc package is almost more informative and thorough than some bigger box sets. Titles include "He's In Town" by The Tokens, "Don't Ever Change" by The Crickets, "The First & The Last" by The Chiffons, "Brand New Man" by Richard Popcorn Wylie, "Let Me Get Close To You" by Skeeter Davis, "The Idol" by Bobby Vee, "I Can't Make It Alone" by PJ Proby, "Just A Little Girl" by Donna Loren, "I Can't Hear You" by Betty Everett, "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" by Bobby Rydell, "I Didn't Have Any Summer Romance" by The Satisfactions, "Yours Until Tomorrow" by Dee Dee Warwick, "So Much Love" by Ben E King, and "A Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin.

Various — Northern Soul Collector Vol 3 – The Ultimate Soul Meeting ... CD
Outta Sight (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $16.99
Rare soul galore, but great soul too – a smoking selection of rare nuggets from the late 60s, including a fair bit of cuts that have never been on CD before! The package seems to be nicely heavy on talents from the Chicago scene – which is A-Ok with our Windy City ears – but also features great bits from down south and out west too – and the tunes step and soar along with grooves that break way past obvious 60s modes, and show that there's a continued great run of music to be discovered from this really amazing time! The whole thing's great – not a bit of filler at all – and titles include "I'm Stuck On You" by The Poets, "Just What Do You Plan To Do About IT" by Little Jerry Williams, "You Never Do Right" by The Fi-Dels, "Soon As Darkness Falls" by Roscoe Shelton, "Wonderful Nite" by Ruby Andrews, "All I Need" by June Conquest, "I Can't Hear You" by Betty Everett, "New Guy" by The Dynettes, "My Love Is Gone" by The Shadows, "Good Lovin Man" by Delores Hall, "The Night The Angels Cried" by Johnny Dynamite, "If There's Anything Else You Want" by Roddie Joy, "That I Love You" by Paul Johnson, and "I'm Walking Away" by Denise Chandler.

Various — Real Thing – The Songs Of Ashford, Simpson, & Armstead ... CD
Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
Mindblowing music from the trio of Nick Ashford, Valerie Simpson, and Jo Armstead – most of it composed and recorded in New York during the mid 60s – before Armstead left for the Chicago scene, and Ashford & Simpson went to work for Motown in Detroit! The three writers have a really beautiful way of putting over a tune – fresh lyrics that are perfect for the budding soul generation of the 60s – and which often get some production work from the members of the trio too, especially on some of the tracks here that were issued by Wand Records. The package does a perfect job of unearthing these early years – pulling together compositions by the three (and occasionally just by Ashford & Simpson) – and illuminating this period with notes that are as thorough as the selection of tracks on the set. Titles include "Dance Children Dance" by Mary Love, "The Shoe Won't Fit" by Betty Everett, "Look Away" by The Shirelles, "Are You Trying To Get Rid Of Me Baby" by The Crystals, "I Don't Need No Doctor" by Sandy Nelson, "Please Little Angel" by Doris Troy, "The Real Thing" by The Chiffons, "Smokie Joe's" by The Jewels, "Say It Again" by Marie Knight, "Looky Looky" by Candy & The Kisses, "Mr Creator" by The Apollas, "You're Absolutely Right" by Tina Britt, "I'm Satisfied" by Chuck Jackson & Maxine Brown, "Cry Like A Baby" by Aretha Franklin, "Same Old Feeling" by Jo Ann & Troy, "Only Your Love Can Save Me" by Betty LaVette, and "Love Ain't What It Used To Be" by The Diplomats.

Various — Scene Club – Ham Yard London 1963 to 1966 – The Original Sound Of Northern Soul, Popcorn & R&B ... CD
Snapper (UK), Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
A stunning look at a legendary London club of the 60s – presented here in a really well-done book-style package – with a CD that's brimming over with the American soul that made it groove so great back in the day! The set does a great job of showing the roots both of Northern soul, and the UK mod scene – as most of the work here is from that early cusp of soul – when R&B still figured strongly into the mix, and the groove also had some strong inflections from blues and jazz as well! The photos and images in the book are totally great – laid out over a full-color 24 pages – and the CD features 28 smoking tracks – including "Ain't That Loving You Baby" by Jimmy Reed, "Jaywalking" by The Upsetters, "Who Can I Run To" by Geri Hall, "I'll Take One" by Harold Burrage, "Song Called Soul" by Gene Chandler, "Let The Good Times Roll" by Alvin Robinson, "Question" by Roscoe Shelton, and "I've Got A Claim On You" by Betty Everett.

Various — Wants List 3 – 17 Classic, In-Demand & Soulful Rare Grooves ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
Sublime 70s soul all the way through – a tremendous collection of mellow groovers and midtempo steppers – quite possibly the best volume so far in the Wants List series! The cuts here are all wrapped around a really unified groove – that 70s style that was never too funky, nor too uptempo – just nicely laidback and warm, yet still with a bubbling, gentle sort of rhythm. Production is full on most tracks, but there's always a great edge in the vocals – and although many of the artists here are bigger names, the cuts on the set (as you might guess from the title!) represent some of their more obscure tracks from the decade! Titles include "Lovely Lady" by Vernon Burch, "Trying To Get Next To You" by Arnold Blair, "If I Can't Stop You" by CB Overton, "Is This Really Love" by Charles Drain, "Show Me The Way To Love" by Carl Davis & The Chi-Sound Orchestra, "Midnight Lovers" by Passion, "Smother Me With Your Love" by Betty Wright, "The Rub" by George & Gwen McCrae, "Feed Me your Love" by The Fatback Band, "Harder & Harder" by Archie Bell, "The Man In The Street" by William Bell, "Sweet Music Soft Lights & You" by Ken Williams, "Wondering" by Betty Everett, "Electrified Love" by Ernie Hines, and "Feel Good" by Michelle Wiley.

new Jerry Butler & Brenda Lee Eager — Love We Have ... LP
Mercury, 1973. Used Gatefold .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Duets between Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager – done as serious, adult oriented soul tracks, one side of the album in an optimistic "The Love We Have" setting, the other in a sadder "The Love We Had" setting – both of them handled in a mode that's far far different than Jerry's 60s duets with Betty Everett. As with most of Jerry's Mercury work at the time, there's some wonderful tunes on the album – including a few numbers written by Terry Callier or Billy Butler – and the whole thing's produced with a subtle approach that creates a solid warm mellow soul vibe throughout. Very hip stuff – and heck, the inside cover even quotes Kenneth Rexroth! Titles include "Lean On Me", "As The Seasons Change", "I Like Your Lovin", "Can't Understand It", "How Long Will It Last", and "Were We Lovers, "Were We Friends".
(Cover has a cutout hole and a couple of small light stains.)

new Ed Bogas/Sonny Stitt/Merl Saunders — Black Girl – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1972. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
A killer little soundtrack – and one that's quite different than the usual blacksploitation set, but still pretty funky overall! The film Black Girl was a surprisingly sensitive movie directed by Ossie Davis in the early 70s – not as much about action as it was about the everyday life, and the hopes and dreams of the lead characters – all of which made for some really well-rounded music, of the sort you'd find on some of the other great Fantasy Records soundtracks of the time, especially the classic Cornbread Earl & Me score. Ed Bogas and Ray Shanklin put together the whole thing, and the album's a mix of hip instrumental tracks with some other vocal ones – a really nice range that draws from singers like Betty Everett, Rodger Collins, and JJ Malone – and jazz players like Sonny Stitt and John Hunt (plus organ from Merl Saunders on one cut.) Titles include "BJ's Step", "Black Girl", "Sister", "Earl (Still A Pearl)", "Mothers Day Song", "Power", "Get Me To The Bridge", "Chock-lite Puddin", and "Black Girl Cue".

Cobra/Fuel 2000, Late 50s. New Copy .... $6.99 14.98 Out Of Stock
Raw r&b, uptempo blues & hard soul from the vaults of Cobra Records – a Chicago label that really only operated from the mid-to-late 50s – but for a time rivaled Chess and helped form the seeds of some of the most incredible soul & blues for decades to come! Cobra and its subsidiary Artistic released really nice early sides by young Ike Turner, Betty Everett and Buddy Guy – plus work by comparative veterans of the time like Duke Reid and Harold Burrage – artists whose legacy would loom large in the years to come. new Various — Cobra Records Singles Collection ... CD
Cobra/Fuel, Mid 50s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $16.99 18.98 Out Of Stock
Amazing work from Cobra Records – a short-lived label on the Chicago scene of the 50s, but one who managed to cut some music to rival more famous sounds over at Chess Records and Vee Jay! The scope of styles here is wonderful – from gritty blues to early soul to hard-edged doo wop and more – a really wonderful testament to the strength of Cobra at its height, and to the Chicago scene as well! The package features key early work by artists who's break big later on other imprints – and titles include "I Can't Quit You Baby" by Otis Rush, "Rock & Roll Boogie" by The Clouds, "She Knocks Me Out" by Harold Burrage, "Shake It" by Duke Jenkins, "Easy Baby" by Magic Sam, "You Don't Love Me" by Ike Turner, "Tell Me Darling" by Betty Everett, "Little Chickie" by Jimmy Kelly & The Rock A Beats, "Hidden Charms" by Charles Clark, "Sit & Cry" by Buddy Guy, "Lonely Lonely Village" by The Calvaes, and "Fishin In My Pond" by Lee Jackson.
