Wonderful early work by Robert Ashley – a great example of the way he always brought playfully clever touches to his compositions! As with some of Ashley's other work, the piece is spoken, but heavily processed too – layered back on itself with an aesthetic that's certainly informed by the minimalist generation, but sometimes a bit more offbeat too – with echoes of both the work of Jon Appleton and Steve Reich! Paul DeMarinis handles a lot of electronics alongside the voice of Ashley – and the piece was recorded live at Mills College in 1972, and is based on a text from John Barton Wolgamot.

Titles include "Roll Over Beethoven", "Thank You Girl", "She Loves You", "I'll Get You", and "I Call Your Name".

The tunes are short, tuneful, and undeniably great – that sound that instantly set the group apart from just about all of their contemporaries. Titles include "It Won't Be Long", "All My Loving", "Hold Me Tight", "Roll Over Beethoven", "You Really Got A Hold On Me", "I Wanna Be Your Man", "Money", "Little Child", and "Devil In Her Heart".

A whole set of rocking instrumentals from the Bill Black Combo – their own Memphis instrumental versions of tunes recorded by Chuck Berry at Chess – served up in the group's trademark blend of guitar, organ, and tenor sax! There's a bit more guitar than usual on some of the cuts – an obvious nod to Berry's prowess on the instrument – yet other tunes have the tenor taking this place, and working some cool groovy sounds with the lead instrument lines. Titles include "Roll Over Beethoven", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "School Days", "Carol", "Maybellene", "Thirty Days", and "Reelin & Rockin".

Very cool compilation featuring a whole mess of great lost funk tracks from the legendary Westbound label – including a few unreleased cuts! There's a number of tracks on here that we just about never see, and some more that you'll only find on rare funky 45s. Tracks include "Getting It Off", an instrumental by Fuzzy Haskins, "Super Funk" by Erasmus Hall, "In The Pocket" by Boots, "Funk It Down" by Caesar Frazier, "Just Us" by Crowd Pleasers, "Funky Beethoven" by Gene Anderson, "Be What You Is" by U.S. Music & Funkadelic, and "Funky World (parts 1 & 2)" by Silky Vincent. Very cool stuff, and with a good set of notes! Plus, this CD version includes the extra tracks "Hickey Burr" by Caesar Frazier, "Loose Booty" by Funkadelic, "Sweet Thing" by Houston Outlaws, "Hit It & Quit It" by Bobby Franklin's Insanity, and more!

It all kicks off with the groovy strings, brass and bongos-flavored main titles theme, and it manages to get even groovier and more adventurous from there!
