new ADC BandTalk That Stuff ... LP
Cotillion, 1979. Very Good+ .... $6.99
Heavy dancefloor funk from ADC Band – grooving in a bass-heavy mode that almost seems like a mainstream take on P-Funk – but which also has some really great mellow soul elements on the mellower tunes! There's a great ensemble Detroit groove going on overall – and as an added bonus, soul jazz legend Marcus Belgrave plays trumpet on most of the tracks! Titles include "I Just Want To Hold You", "Stank Machine", "Midnite Creeper", "Talk That Stuff", "ADC Is Back", and "At The Party".
(Cover has a cutout notch, some wear, and a few creases.)

Hasil Adkins — White Light, White Meat – Authentic West Virginia One Man Band Home Recordings 1958 to 1965 ... LP
Norton, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy .... $12.99
One man rockabilly firebrand and Chicken Walkin' madman Hasil Adkins – done justice once more by his longtime champions at Norton Records! The title is as cheeky nod to the Velvets, but Hasil ain't no NYC art scenester, nope – he might be the true king of rock and roll, stumping out raggedly brilliant rockabilly wierdness all by his lonesome (for the most part...a fella named Sanford Stovers sings some on "Turn My Coat Tails Loose") at his home in West Virginia from the late 50s to mid 60s. Includes "Roll Roll Train", "Woke Up This Morning", "Donnio Boogie", "Donnio Shuffle", "Lonely Graveyard", "Somebody Help Me" and more.

African Souls Band/Wganda Kenya — Nande/El Abanico – Afro Funk Gems Vol 4 ... 7-inch
Mukatsuku (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $9.99
"Nande" is a mighty burner from the African Souls Band – a tune that mixes balafon lines in with Afro Funk rhythms, and a bit of strings too – all to create a really compelling blend that's unlike most that we know from the time – yet still damn funky, and with a great lyric too! "El Abanico" has more trippy bass, almost psychedelic at times – and pops and percolates with some great funky energy on the back/forth vocals!

Afro Kelenkye BandJungle Funk/Mother Africa/Munchin Session/Too Bad Girl (2 x 7" singles) ... 7-inch
Cultures Of Soul, 1977. New Copy 2 x 7" single (pic cover).... $13.99
Rare funk from the Kelekye Band – material recorded after their legendary Moving World album, but never issued at the time! This amazing package is totally great – four tracks of offbeat Afro Funk, with an approach that's heavy on percussion, and topped by jazzy riffs that really complicate the sound – a vibe that goes way deeper than more common Afro modes of the time, thanks to the rich solo energy of the horns! Trumpet is especially nice, and works great with the vocals – especially when they hit a warmer 70s soul mode that almost makes the record feel like Hugh Masekela teaming up with The Blackbyrds. Titles include "Mother Africa", "Munchin Session", "Too Bad Girl", and "Jungle Funk".

Amuzement Park BandAll Points Bulletin ... LP
Atlantic, 1984. Very Good+ .... $4.99
The major label debut of Amuzement Park – almost more obscure than the indie set that preceded it, and kind of in a different mode altogether! There's still a boogie groove to most of the set, but the group are also funking things up a bit more – possibly following a Minneapolis influence, and bringing some new wave basslines and sharper-edged keyboards into the tunes. Tracks are catchy, and often a bit poppy – and titles include "Gotta Dance", "Music Makers", "This Love", "APB", "Didn't You Know", and "Squeeze Me".
(Includes the original inner sleeve. Cover has a promo stamp and tracklist sticker.)

Harry Arnold — Vol 1 – Big Band – 1964/1965 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1964/1965. New Copy .... $15.99 16.99
Previously unissued material from the great Harry Arnold – excellent mid 60s big band sessions, as creative as they are hard-swinging! Arnold's group here is at the top of its form – working together with a rich array of tones and colors that show the best legacies of 50s modern jazz in the large ensemble idiom – yet with a lean quality that really allows lots of voice from the soloists, too – a lineup that includes Arne Domnerus, Jan Johansson, Lars Farnlov, Bengt-Arne Wallin, and Georg Riedel! Arrangements are by Wallin, Pete Jacques, and others – but it's Arnold who clearly knows how to make the whole thing hold together this well. Titles include "It's In The Bag", "Margie", "Blues For Nathan", "Cheryl", "Tina", "Per Spelman", "You've Got It", "I Knew It I Knew It", and "King Valiant".

Average White BandCut The Cake ... LP
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good .... $6.99
If you need to own one album by Average White Band, this is it! The album features the band at their funky best – playing hard and chopping away with a strong crossover sound that put them firmly on the map during the early 70s. Loads of tight rolling basslines and hard drums – all produced with that polished funky sound that was the band's stock-in-trade during the big chart years! The record includes their funky classic "School Boy Crush", still a sampling favorite – plus loads of other nice moments, like "If I Ever Lose This Heaven", "Cloudy", "High Flyin Woman", and the hit title cut "Cut The Cake".
(Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has a cut conrer, some wear, and a few creases.)

Keith Badman — Beach Boys – The Definitive Diary Of America's Greatest Band On Stage & In The Studio ... Book
Backbeat Books, 2004. New Copy .... $5.99 29.95
The Beach Boys – day by day, year by year, presented in a very compelling diary format that really gets past some of the overblown mythos about the group! Author Badman goes for a "just the facts" sort of approach – and lists key days in the group's career from the 60s onward – with most of the details given to important stretches before 1970, but some key information from later decades too. Each entry is dated, with specific information on what the Beach Boys were involved in on that day – recording, rehearsing, touring, etc – with a surprising amount of vintage photos and other bits to support the text. Perhaps most compelling is the book's frequent use of Musicians Union sheets for recording sessions – listing session players and their details (including, oddly, social security numbers!) – which really helps illuminate the way that the records were being made. 399 pages, softcover, with black and white images.

Mickey Baker & The Alex Sanders Funk Time BandJazz Rock Guitar ... CD
Kicking Mule/Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, 1978. New Copy .... $14.99 16.99
A rare later album from 50s guitar giant Mickey Baker – recorded overseas, and with a different vibe than his legendary R&B work – including some nice funky moments too! The album's not really jazz, and it's hardly rock at all – and instead is more of a bluesy effort with slight undercurrents of funk – some modern touches provided by the tight rhythms of bassist Alex Sanders and his combo – who provide a nice backdrop for Baker's sharp lines on guitar! Mickey's picked up a few modern tones over the years, but still has plenty of grit in his grooves – and titles include "Pop Off", "Prelude", "Ouagadougou", "Sophie", "Wag Your Tail", "Shadadabah", and "Alexander's Funk Time".

George Benson — Big Boss Band ... CD
Warner, 1990. Used .... $2.99
George Benson more than earns the title on this one – given that most of the tracks feature backings from the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster – a great ensemble who really help keep things soulful throughout! Despite the date of the set, the feel here is a bit more classic than most of Benson's work from the time – as the group bring a full acoustic soul to the record – a swelling, swaying brace of horns that seems to push George's vocals a bit more than usual – past that simply sweet style that was the usual Benson bag. There's a range and depth here that's really surprising – a quality that goes past the hokey title, which might make you expect less from the record – and although there's a few brief moments that get slightly contemporary, these pass quickly in favor of a classic groove. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Without A Song", "Ready Now That You Are", "Basie's Bag", "Skylark", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing".

Birdland Dream BandBirdland Dream Band ... LP
Vik, 1956. Very Good+ .... $9.99
A dream band indeed – as the set features a cast of excellent players who manage to come together tightly as a unit, then break out in really strong and hard-blown solos! Even by a "pulled together for this jam session by the record label"-type group there's a swinging style firmly in place – incredible tightness, but a real respect for the soloists – and a power to kick it louder and larger than even in a small group setting. Players include Herb Geller, Al Cohn, Hank Jones, Budd Johnson, and Ernie Wilkins – and titles on this first volume include "Maynard The Fox", "The Wailing Boat", "Somebody Wants Me Down There", "Little Girl Kimbi", and "Button Nose".

new Black Ivory/Fatback BandI Keep Asking YouQuestions/Going To See My Baby – Best Of Perception & Today Records ... 7-inch
Perception/BBE (UK), 1971/1972. New Copy .... $6.99
An early stunner from Black Ivory – a great groover, done with kind of a bouncy lilting groove that has lots of bass, and a good mix with the group's harmony vocals! One of the funkiest from Fatback – "Goin' to See My Baby" is especially tough, and starts out with a massive breakbeat on the intro, then jumps into wicky-wacky basslines.

new Black Truth Rhythm BandIfetayo (180 gram pressing with bonus 7" single & download) ... LP
Soundway (UK), 1976. New Copy .... $22.99
Wow! The one-and-only album by Trinidadian combo Black Truth Rhythm Band – a completely incredible one at that – hypnotic Caribbean funky soul, jazz and wildly impressive musicianship all around by this group led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Oluko Imo. The record was made in the mid 70s era in which the Afro Funk sound was hitting it's peak – when African rhythms and James Brown style funk were being fused so furiously – but Black Truth Rhythm Band take a different approach, working more with sounds from African spectrum and the West Indies. It's really amazing stuff that takes unpredictable twists from stripped down rhythms, to jazzy guitars and cosmic synths – always with straight up brilliant playing by the group. A fusion of African rhythms, strains of Calypso and boundary free jazzy grooves that balance and exploratory sensibility with tight, irresistible rhythms. Soundway raises the bar once again! Titles include "Ifetayo", "You People", "Saved Musician", "Kilimanjaro", "Aspire", and "Umbala" – plus a bonus 7" single with the track "Imo".

Art Blakey — Art Blakey's Big Band ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1957. New Copy .... $15.99
Quite an unusual record from Art Blakey – a rare big band session, recorded with a lineup that's quite different than the usual Jazz Messengers! Turns out, Blakey's quite good in this setting – and has the same firey energy to direct a larger ensemble that he has when working with a smaller quintet. The added players here really help him express some new musical ideas with greater depth – almost like the added percussionists on some of his drum-heavy Blue Note dates of the late 50s. Members of the group include John Coltrane and Al Cohn on tenor, Sahib Shihab on alto, Donald Byrd and Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Melba Liston on trombone, and Walter Bishop on piano – and titles include "Last Date", "The Outer World", "Midriff", "Tippin", and "Pristine".

new Bonzo Dog Doo Dah BandDog's Life – The Albums 1967 to 1972 (Gorilla/Donut In Granny's Greenhouse/Tadpoles/Keynsham/Let's Make Up) (3CD set) ... CD
Liberty/EMI (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3 CDs .... $20.99
Mad music from the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band – a brilliant mix of dada energy and psychedelic production – served up in these five classic Liberty albums from the cusp of the 70s! Frontman Neil Innes later went on to a lot of projects with Eric Idle in later years – including the famous Rutles project – and the work here definitely has a Monty Python sense of humor, especially in the way it mixes the modern and the vintage with effortless ease – but in ways that seem to create a really unsettling blend of two different eras! There's a definite psych influence going on too – possibly the contribution of Vivian Stanshall – and the set features the full albums Gorilla, The Doughnut In Granny's Greenhouse, Tadpoles, Kenysham, and Let's Make Up & Be Friendly – plus a huge amount of "extra treats" – 8 more bonus tracks from later years and singles.

new Bonzo Dog Doo Dah BandKeynsham (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Liberty/EMI (UK), 1970. Used .... $5.99
Some of the most tuneful moments on record from the Bonzo Dog Band – set that's got some really great songs, but which still allows some space for gags and jokes as well! After three previous albums together, even with a shifting lineup, the group have obviously gotten their groove down a bit more – and the result is some focused little numbers that stand out strongly, and which almost show a more sensitive and (dare we say it!) serious side of the group. All the older sense of dada-inspired play is still at the core, though – and even though there's less radio parodies or audio experiments, the tuneful tracks still have some trippy, psyche-styled moments. Titles include "Tent", "You Done My Brain In", "Keynsham", "Quiet Talks & Summer Walks", "Look At Me I'm Wonderful", "What Do You Do", "Noises For The Leg", and "Busted". CD features 5 bonus tracks – including "How Sweet To Be An Idiot", "The Young Ones", "Are You Having Any Fun", and a great cover of "Witchi Tai To".

Bootsy's Rubber BandThis Boot Is Made For Fonk-N ... LP
Warner, 1979. Very Good .... $5.99
Bootsy's still keeping the P-Funk flag flying high at the end of the 70s – arguably stepping out here with a sound that's got more of the Parliafunkadelicment elements intact than some of George Clinton's other spinoff groups! The tracks are long, and plenty jamming – still with plenty of star power from Bootsy upfront – but also some wonderfully tight rhythms from the rest of the players too, all in that mix of hard-rolling, and light-tripping funk modes that still set the P-Funk groups apart from the pack of imitators who'd cropped up in their wake! Titles include "Jam Fan (Hot)", "Bootsy Get Live", "Under The Influence Of A Groove", "Chug-A-Lug", "Oh Boy", and "Shejam".

Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street BandNo Time For Dreaming/Golden Rule ... 7-inch
Dunham/Daptone, 2010. New Copy .... $4.99
All new funky soul from Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band – a killer cover of Joe Quarterman's "No Time For Dreaming" and the groover "Golden Rule"! "No Time For Dreaming" wastes no time in getting to the good stuff – that tracks in full soulful swing from the opening second, with Bradley's gritty vocals, tight drums, brass and female backup vocals. "Golden Rule" another winner, with pulled-tight groove laid down by the band and a gritty soul message delivery from Mr. Bradley.

Daptone, 2008. New Copy .... $4.99
Classic style funky soul from Daptone supergroup the Menahan Street Band – featuring members of the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, and Budos Band – and a killer guest vocal by Charles Bradley! "The Telephone Song" sounds like a lost soul nugget, from the gritty 70 style instrumentation to the old school telephone sound effect that kicks it off – with Charles's achingly soul vocals in full control. The flip side is essentially the instrumental version, titled as "Tired Of Fighting" as it appears on the Menahan Street Band's Make The Road By Walking. The very embodiment of the neo classic funky soul sound!

Dunham/Daptone, 2007. New Copy .... $4.99
Scorching raw soul from Charles Bradley – backed by the tight Menahan Street Band! "World (Is Going Up In Flames)" might be the best track yet from Bradley – an incredible groover with a heavy theme – but the apocalypse never sounded so sweet! The groove is raw and emotive, given a deeper feel thanks to some piano in the mix – with a rubbery bass line and backing vocals by the Gospel Queens! The flip "Heartaches And Pain" is another emotional workout – and has the feel of a lost southern soul scorcher, but with funkier bassline and drums! Amazing stuff!

Budos BandBudos Band ... LP
Daptone, 2005. New Copy .... $11.99
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound – a complexity in the group's well-arranged horn parts, but a simplicity to their rhythms that makes the album cook like some of our favorite classics from years back. Sax and trumpet lines are mixed nicely with heavy percussion and a fair bit of organ at the bottom – creating a murky groove that has a bit of New Orleans in the mix, but also has most of the instruments stepping along with the rhythm – in a very cool take on the Africa 70 sound. Tracks are all instrumental, and all incredible – and the record's one of the freshest we've heard from the deep funk underground in years – a second-generation set that gets way past simple copycat funk and into its own unique groove! Titles include "Budos Theme", "Ghost Walk", "King Charles", "Eastbound", "Across The Atlantic", "Up From The South", "TIBWF", and "Monkey See Monkey Do".

Budos BandBudos Band EP ... LP
Daptone, 2009. New Copy .... $10.99
Previously-unreleased work from the Budos Band – recorded a few years back in Brooklyn, and finally seeing the light of day on this sweet vinyl-only EP! The grooves here are wonderful – and show the group really picking up a lot of global elements in their funk – some key Ethiopian lines in the horn passages and keyboards, mixed with deeper American elements in the rhythms – all wrapped up with the kind of perfect production that's always made the Daptone label one of the most trusted imprints we know for deep funk! Stunning throughout – and why the hell they didn't release this stuff years back is beyond us – but we're more than happy to have it now. The set features 6 tracks that include "Ephra", "Nobody's Bulletproof", "Smoke Gets In", "Hidden Hand", "Mas O Menos", and "The Proposition".

Budos BandBudos Band III ... CD
Daptone, 2010. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99
A great third album from Staten Island instrumental funk titans The Budos Band – who've brought eclectic inspiration all along and have always colored from a much broader palette of styles than most of their peers – going even further this time out and delivering their best yet! The Daptone House Of Soul blueprint is a big part of the recipe, as it should be. Classic funky soul grit holds it all together and each cut has an unshakable groove, but with that in full effect, the group is free to explore. The Budos horns are as impeccable and communicative as ever, with brass that ranges from classic stateside funk and Afro influences. The percussion (bongos, clave, cowbell and more) is just as broadly thought out and tightly delivered, snakey bass lines, flute and the sometimes secret weapon on Budos Band III, the electric organ – which brings a bit of a garage psych/funk rock vibe. Truly exceptional work from the one of the best bands of their generation! Includes "Rite Of The Ancients", "Black Venom", "River Serpentine", "Unbroken, Unshaven", "Nature's Wrath", "Golden Dune's", "Budo's Dirge", "Raja Haje", "Crimson Skies", "Mark Of The Unnamed" and "Reppirt Yad" (a funked up Lennon/McCartney cover...read it backwards, kids).

Daptone, 2006. New Copy .... $5.99
Love the drums on this one – all skittish and snapping at the beginning – really setting the scene perfectly for the Afro Funk-styled horns that top off the tune and really set the tone! The track's like some lost Nigerian 45 from the 70s – and given excellent production to really suit the mood! "Ghost Walk" isn't nearly as spooky as it sounds – and has this amazing bassline that dips down in ways you wouldn't expect – kind of like The Meters, but as if they're messing themselves up a bit on purpose – all to set up a groove that's equally savage as the a-side, but completely different in sound!

Chesapeake Jukebox BandChesapeake Jukebox Band ... CD
Greene Bottle/Rev-Ola (UK), 1971. New Copy .... $13.99
A glorious relic of early 70s studio pop – and a record that's awash in unapologetic references to The Beatles and The Beach Boys! Chesapeake Jukebox Band were a short-lived collaboration between singer-songwriters Steve Sawyer and Freddie McFinn, who are working here with genius producer Ron Frangipone in the best compressed style of the legendary Record Plant studios. There's lessons here learned clearly from Brian Wilson, Phil Spector, George Martin, and some of the hipsters on the late 60s Warner scene – but an overall approach that's a bit more personal in the lyrics – which makes for a great combination with the loftier production of the album. At one level, there's also a spaciousness here that reminds us a bit of later work from the UK pop scene – but again, the whole thing's a bit more down to earth, in a way that we really like. Titles include "Sad Nite In Boston", "This Time", "Jennifer", "Love", "Until We Meet Again", "Daisies For The 8th Of May", "Fizbee's Tavern", and "The Door's Unlatched". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "Don't Howdy Doody On Me", "Crime Of The Century", and "Don't Cry Your Eyes Out".

Chicago Cubs/Clark St BandPennant Fever/Slide ... 7-inch
Chess, 1969. Near Mint- .... $9.99
A great lost single from Chess! The a-side, "Pennant Fever", features the 1969 Chicago Cubs, singing a version of "Fever" with vocals about their (soon to be aborted) run for the world series. The real treat, though, is the flipside, the instrumental "Slide", by the Chicago Cubs Clark St. Band – most likely a Chess/Cadet studio group, fronted by a hard-wailing organist. The organ player is great, and the instrumental track is a really nice groover – with great Hammond riffs and groovy guitar parts.

Rare work from the Circle City Band – the first-ever full length album from the group – and a set that brings together their few club singles and a host of previously unreleased tracks! Clarke Boland Big BandAll Smiles ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1968. New Copy .... $13.99
A hard slammer from the Clarke-Boland Big Band – recorded when the band was burning up the road in Europe, taking great players and audiences in one fell swoop, coming up with some of the strongest straight jazz of their generation! The album features stunning solos all around by an all-star mix of American and European players that includes Benny Bailey, Johnny Griffin, Tony Coe, Dave Pike, Sahib Shihab, and Ronnie Scott – all coming together with incredibly fluidity, yet also breaking out for some massive solos on their own! Arrangements are by Boland – tight, right, and outta site – and titles include "Let's Face The Music & Dance", "High School Cadets", "By Strauss", "Gloria", "Sweet & Lovely", "Get Out Of Town", and "I'm All Smiles".

Clarke Boland Big BandAt Her Majesty's Pleasure ... CD
Black Lion/Rearward (Italy), 1969. New Copy .... $19.99
One of the greatest long-form albums from the Clarke Boland Big Band – a sophisticated suite that not only shows off the writing ability of Francy Boland, but also demonstrates the group's ability to swing like a mofo, even when things are serious! The album's a jazz suite written by Boland, and dedicated to the great prisons of England – where Johnny Griffin was once kept "At Her Majesty's Pleasure", due to non-payment of some income tax. The experience of Griffin led Boland to explore the idea of the British penal system with a number of powerful emotional themes, and the result of this writing is one of the CBBB's best albums of the late 60s – filled with rich colors and tones that go far beyond the earlier modes of the group, but without some of the too-complicated elements that sometimes show up in later suites. A good part of the album's success comes from the strength of the soloists – players who include Johnny Griffin and Ronnie Scott on tenor, Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib Shihab on flute and soprano, Kenny Wheeler and Benny Bailey on trumpets, and Ake Persson and Nat Peck on trombones. Titles include "Pentonville", "Wormwood Scrubs", "Doing Time", "Broadmoor", and "Going Straight".

Clarke Boland Big BandClarke Boland Big Band ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1963. New Copy .... $15.99
One of the first great moments from this legendary 60s ensemble – a brilliant pairing of American and European players – heard here in one of their pre-MPS sessions! Group founder Gigi Campi is well-placed at the helm – as both producer and supervisor – giving the ensemble the vital energy that made them different from so many other groups of previous years – a quality that almost has them hitting like a small combo, especially on the breakout solo moments on the set. Players include Benny Bailey and Idrees Sulieman on trumpets, Sahib Shihab and Derek Humble on reeds, and Fats Sadi on vibes – not to mention core rhythms from Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. The group's inventive style of writing and arranging is already in place – and titles include "Long Note Blues", "Speedy Reeds", "Sonor", and "Om Mani Padme Hum".

Great work by this legendary hard swinging band – an early 60s American album issued on Atlantic Records, in the years before the Clark Boland Band's legendary run on MPS! Despite the early date, the album's got all the core elements of the band's sound in place – soaring rhythms, sharp-edged frontlines, and some great solo work by players who include Benny Bailey, Derek Humble, Jimmy Woode, Shahib Shihab, Idrees Sulieman, and Fats Sadi – coming together in a brilliant trans-Atlantic meeting of jazz talents! Atlantic, 1962. Very Good- .... $9.99
Great early genius from the Clarke Boland Big Band – proof that Kenny and Francy were onto something great, right from the start! The album really has the group hitting the heights of their MPS years – stretching out way past earlier big band modes, into the hip mix of rhythms and soulful solos that made the ensemble unlike any other group in the 60s – a really groundbreaking approach to their music, delivered by a range of top-shelf players! Arrangements are by Boland, who also plays piano – and other group members include Benny Bailey and Jimmy Deuchar on trumpets, Derek Humble on alto sax, Carl Drewo and Zoot Sims on tenor, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax and flute, and Ake Persson on trombone – plus rhythm from the rock-solid duo of Jimmy Woode on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include the Latin-tinged "Los Bravos", and more great originals by Boland – including "Volutes", "The Styx", "Charon's Ferry", and "Box 703 Washington DC" – plus versions of "Gloria" and "Last Train From Overbrook".

A seminal session from one of the greatest large groups ever! This one captures the Clarke-Boland ensemble at the peak of their creativity – swinging hard in that tight firey way that was virtually their trademark during the late 60s. The players are a top-shelf mix of European and American jazz legends – coming together without ego, without attitude, and having a hell of a time working through groundbreaking arrangements from leader Francy Boland. Soloists include Sahib Shihab, Tony Coe, Dusko Goykovich, Ronnie Scott, Jimmy Woode, and Benny Bailey – and the tracks are all short, but swing like a mofo, with plenty of solo action in the mix. An incredibly rare slice of righteous soul – pulled from obscurity! "Third Eye" has this really cool little groove – jazzy, but kind of light too – with these horns that are way in the background as the core skipping rhythms set most of the scene – all to some very human, honest lead vocals that fit nicely into the whole mix! "Back Home" is a mellow ballad, but has this light stepping groove that's pretty catchy!

Don Covay & The Jefferson Lemon Blues BandHouse Of Blue Lights ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1969. New Copy .... $15.99
A cool step sideways for the great Don Covay – a set that still holds onto all the soul of his earlier work for Atlantic – but one that also has Don hitting a rootsier, bluesier mode too! The combo's definitely a blues group at their core, but apart from some harmonica and a bit more twang in the guitar, they come across more like a rough soul combo behind Covay's lead – a quality that comes through especially strong on some of the points where the drums step out a bit more than usual. Our hat's off to Don for making this move – as the record really shows a whole new side of his vocal talents, and has a deeper vibe than he'd go for in his later crossover soul of the 70s. Titles include "Homemade Love", "Steady Roller", "Four Women", "Mad Dog Blues", and "Shut Your Mouth".

Brooklyn's CSC Funk Band delivers a solid little tribute to Gang Starr – contemporary funk instros inspired by DJ Premier's benchmark productions for that most legendary of duos! "A Little Weight" is inspired by "Who's Gonna Take The Weight", and it's a creative interpretation that's faithful to Premier's tightly-punctuation beatcraft, though the CSC brings plenty of their own adventurous style to the table. "A Little Planet" has a lot of psych funk elements – some rubbery guitars, oboe and synth grooves – though it still keeping a tight, drum-heavy backdrop.

Eddie Lockjaw Davis Big BandTrane Whistle ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1960. New Copy .... $5.99 11.98
Don't pass this one up! Although lots of other albums by Eddie Lockjaw Davis are laidback quartet and quintet sessions, done in a soul jazz organ/tenor mode – this session features Eddie working with stunning bigger band backings, in a searingly soulful sound that's simply incredible! The leadoff track, "Trane Whistle", has Lockjaw really working new waves of sound into his tenor sax – screaming the horn in a way that you thought you'd never hear, and playing with tones that are a lot darker than usual! The set moves on from there in a nice batch of material that includes "Whole Nelson" and "Stolen Moments", two fantastic originals by Oliver Nelson, who also arranged the album – and takes a great deal of responsibility for the strength of the set. The record shows a whole new side of Davis' talents – one that was barely if ever recorded like this again – and which is made even better by the presence of freshly modern players that include Eric Dolphy, Richard Williams, Melba Liston, and Roy Haynes. Great stuff!

Dazz BandInvitation To Love ... LP
Motown, 1980. Very Good- .... $2.99
A killer start to the 80s for the Dazz Band – with great tunes in a funky mode as well as more measured group soul numbers – and it all adds up one of their best albums ever! Tunes like the opener "Shake It", plus "Shake It Up" and "Magnetized" bring the funkier vibes – with a vamping guitar, thumping bass groove, punchy horns, and top notch vocals from the group – while tunes like the title track and "Beyond The Horizon" have a more soaring arrangement of horns and some strings, still with an impeccable core groove. It's not as smoothed out in the production booth as some of their later grooves of the 80s – a total gem! Other titles include " Skate Lovers", "Carry On", "Do It Again", "Do It Again", "Sooner Or Later" and "Beyond The Horizon".

Dazz Band keep it plenty live on this early 80s gem – a killer set from the group's hit run for Motown! The set's got a bouncy groove that's very much in the best Motown funk style at the time – lots of bass at the bottom, and plenty tight on production – but never as smooth or commercial as work from a few years later. The group balance things out well with a few mellower cuts – numbers that still have some sort of a groove, but one that's a bit more laidback, and which shows they're not just a funk-driven outfit. The Dazz Band may be wild and free in the title, but the album's tighter than ever – a lean, focused approach to the Dazz Band sound – done here with loads of 80s production and instrumentation in the mix! The rhythms are heavy with drum machine lines – often mixed with keyboard bits and swirled together with a sound that's even more crossover than some of the group's earlier work. Vocals often take a back seat to the grooves – but on the ballads they shine through nicely, and remind us of the group's roots. Titles include "The Beat That's Right", "Wild & Free", "Love MIA", "Sunglasses", "Something You Said", and "Time Will Heal A Broken Heart". The album may well be the funkiest set ever issued by Sub Pop – and has a hard-rolling power that rivals classic sounds you might hear on the Ethiopiques series – sent home especially well by the sax lines of Danny Mekonnen, and amazing vocals of Bruck Tesfaye – an artist who's really got his sound just right! Other instrumentation is right on the money, with some occasional touches of funkier elements – but usually just the right sort of classic Ethiopiano percussion, horns, and strings to make the music come out beautifully. Somali sounds from the late 80s – a wonderful set of grooves from the Dur Dur Band – originally issued only on cassette, and lovingly restored here on some more enduring formats! The style is pretty darn funky – maybe some of the latest Afro Funk grooves we've heard from the scene – much more in the spirit of some of the best 70s funk recordings from Ghana or Nigeria, but with a flavor that's more 80s-inspired overall! There's also some cool Eastern touches running through the mix – a key indication of the cultural and political shifts happening in Mogadishu at the time, and which would only be more evident in later years – perhaps telegraphed here in a trans-gulf groove that's mighty nice. Bob Dylan/The BandBasement Tapes ... LP
Columbia, Late 60s/1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold .... $34.99
Dylan & The Band's legendary Basement Tapes – those amazing late 60s Woodstock recordings – and an album that was a classic long before it was officially released in the mid 70s! Bootleg after bootleg of some these recordings might have sold enough copies on the grey market in the early 70s to go platinum back in the day, so there's little wonder that Columbia would finally get some kind of official release out there – and it lives up to the legend! Dylan's conversational, seemingly spontaneous lyricism stretches over a good portion of it, with some much more soulful numbers, too – and those are all the more effective with The Band's incredible instrumentation, backing and occasional lead vocals. Includes "Odds And Ends", "Million Dollar Bash", "Tears Of Rage", "Tiny Montgomery", "Nothing Was Delivered", "Too Much Of Nothing", "Clothes Line Saga", "You Ain't Goin Nowhere", "Open The Door, Homer", "This Wheel's On Fire, "Crash On the Levee (Down In The Flood)", "Long Distance Operator".

Fatback — Man With The Band ... LP
Spring, 1977. Very Good .... $6.99
A key transitional record from Fatback – one that sits nicely between their earlier funk and later club years! The record clearly knows this aspect about itself – as side one is titled "Vintage – House Party", and features more longer-jamming takes on the grooves that group was beginning during their Event years – a tightening up of the rougher initial Fatback groove, with plenty of bass driving the bottom of the tracks and lots more guitar work over the top. Side two shifts the focus to the "Tasty – Disco Party" mode – a style that's not that different from the first, but which has some smoother touches overall. Great Fatback all around, and titles include "Funk Backin", "Master Booty", "The Man With The Band", "Mile High", "I Gotta Thing For You", "Midnight Freak", and "Zodiac Man".

Fatback BandNight Fever ... LP
Spring, 1976. Very Good .... $5.99
A key turn in the groove for The Fatback Band – one that has the group getting a good dose of "night fever", and smoothing out their funk for the 70s disco crowd! Yet although clubby, the record's still plenty funky – a refinement of the groove first started on Yum Yum, streamlined into a sweet blend of bass, drums, guitar, and plenty of horns – but all still with a sense of liveness and jamming that plenty shows the roots of the combo from the old days. A few tracks here have a nicely sweet soul sound – sometimes with backing vocals from Donna McGhee and Phyllis Hyman – and titles include "Night Fever", "A Little Funky Dance", "The Joint", "Disco Crazy", and "The Booty".
(Cover has an unglued bottom seam, some pen, and a stained and bent corner. Labels have some pen.)

Fatback BandNYCNYUSA ... LP
Spring, 1977. Very Good+ .... $6.99
A well-titled album from one of the funkiest New York groups of the 70s – and proof that Fatback could still hit a heavy groove, even when tightening things up a bit! The style here is still firmly in the live jamming mode of their roots – captured well in the studio, in a style that's never too slick, nor too "easy" in the choices of rhythms or arrangements. Titles like "Double Dutch", "Spank The Baby", "Duke Walk", "Cosmic Woman", and "Love Street" hint at the street funk style that first got the group going – and although the sound's a bit more professional than before, all the best elements are still very much in place! Other titles include "NYCNYUSA", "A Changed Man", and "Soul Finger".
(White label promo, with a sticker on the label.)

The whole album is filled to the brim with loads of great hard funk cuts, with cool crowd noises and a non-stop groove all the way through. Monster cuts, including "Nija Walk", "Fatbackin", "Soul March", "Soul Man", "Kiba", "Clap Your Hands", and lots more!

Finnish Big Band Jazz — Ufology (Didier's 06 edit, Anonymous bonus beats)/No Comments (edit) ... 12-inch
Jazzpuu (Finland), 1975/2006. New Copy (pic cover, reissue).... $13.99
A spacey bit of 70s jazz gets some great mixing here from Finnish studio maestro Didier – and the result is a tune that's almost as dark as some of his original work under the Didier's Sound Spectrum banner! "Ufology" begins with lots of weird analogue electronics – clearly enough to make you think you're having a Close Encounter – but then a really hard drum break comes into the mix, muted slightly at the bottom, and larger jazz orchestrations build over the top! The whole thing sounds like a great funky electronic 70s soundtrack number – and it's presented with some great bonus beats on the flip. Single also includes the track "No Comments" – another great tune from the 70s, done here with a really funky mix of electric rhythms and big band soloing!

Clare Fischer Big BandThesaurus ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99
An unusual session from the great Clare Fischer – although probably his best-known record as well! Clare cut many other jazz sides in a smaller, more intimate setting – but this album features his full talents as a larger arranger – working with a hip ensemble, and turning in some great charts that really keep things on edge! Fischer plays both Fender Rhodes and piano – and the group's got some great west coast help from Bill Perkins and Warne Marsh on tenors, Gary Foster on alto, and Conte Candoli on trumpet – all playing with a bit more sharpness here than usual. There's a nicely off-kilter edge – similar to that which you might hear in some of Clare's work with Cal Tjader – or some of his larger arranging projects for labels like MPS. Solos are out front on all tracks, and titles include "In Memoriam", "Bitter Leaf", "Calamus", and "Miles Behind".

Peoples Potential funk from the height of the 80s cosmic groove era! "I Like The Way You Do It" is by The Loni Gamble Band feat Lisa Warrington, a funky group tune with a tighter feel than some of the more electro steeped vibes of times with a nice guitar groove and spacey keys.

Gap BandGap Band VII (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Total Experience/Big Break (UK), 1985. New Copy .... $14.99
Sweet electro funk from The Gap Band – a group who are still grooving strong here, hitting the best of their Total Experience modes! The trio's mighty tight throughout – and their familiar funk is augmented by some electro touches that definitely keep things fresh – and we mean that in the best mid-80s use of the word! A bit of an old school influence comes into the vocals at points – which are spoken as much as sung on some cuts – and as always, The Gap Band really show their strength with the kind of catchy chorus that works great with a bassy groove. Titles include a great ballad reworking of "Going In Circles" – plus the groovers "Lil Red Funkin Hood", "Automatic Brain", "Desire", "Bumpin Gum People", and "I Know We'll Make It". CD features lots of bonus tracks too – "Desire (special 12" rmx)", "Desire (12" dub)", "Going In Circles (12" long version)", "Going In Circles (12" inst with harmonica)", "Automatic Brain (12" club)", and "Automatic Brain (12" rap version)".

Roberto Gatto & Lysergic BandPure Imagination ... CD
Albore Jazz (Japan), 2011. New Copy .... $22.99
Excellent work from a player we love more and more with each new album – Roberto Gatto, an artist we love equally both for his work as a leader, and on the drums! The set features a slightly larger group than usual – Gatto's Lysergic Band, with alto from Gaetano Partipilo, tenor and soprano sax from Max Ionata, trombone from Roberto Rossi, and trumpet from Giovanni Falzone – all horn players who are used sparingly, in really wonderful ways to flesh out the music, and give it a great deal of individual personality! This is less an ensemble recording than a shifting set of voices that have found some great space to come together – working under Gatto's strong guidance in these moody blends of darkness and light. Other players include Battista Lena on guitar and Alessandro Lanzoni on piano – and titles include "The Swinging Cats", "Lysergic", "Take The Dark Train", "Deep", "Fall", and "Queen Porter March

Dizzy Gillespie — Diz Big Band ... LP
Verve, 1954. Very Good- .... $28.99
Beautiful stuff! While Charlie Parker had Ralph Burns to come up with some good string arrangements for him, Dizzy had the excellent Johnny Richards – with whom he worked on the earlier Diz & Strings LP, and on this stunning session of complicated arrangements that's very different than most of Dizzy's other albums! Richards does a perfect job of setting up orchestrations that continually fascinate – but which never detract from Dizzy's soloing, nor pull his trumpet into soporific dullness. Diz is the main soloist on all tracks, apart from the lusty tracks "Pile Driver" and "Cool Eyes", which feature nice work by Lucky Thompson. Other titles include "O Solow", "Can You Recall", and "Confusion".
(Deep groove Norgran pressing with trumpeter logo – nice and clean overall. Cover has light tape on two seams, and masking tape on a third.)

new Lawrence Gushee — Pioneers Of Jazz – The Story Of The Creole Band (paperback) ... Book
Oxford University Press, 2005. New Copy Book .... $7.99 24.95
The story of the Creole Band – the 7-piece group that took to touring the US in the 1910s – and thusly introduced a lot of people to the pioneering strains of New Orleans-style jazz to heck of a lot people for the very first time – and planting seeds for much of the jazz music to come! Author Lawrence Gushee details how the band's runs through the vaudeville circuit brought pivotal, early instrumental jazz styles to much wider audiences than ever before. As widely known as it is that early 20th Century New Orleans style music paved the way for jazz, it's pretty remarkable to read how important this one group was to the entire culture!

Herb Hardesty & His BandDomino Effect – The Wing & Federal Recordings 1958 to 1961 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy .... $18.99
Sax-heavy New Orleans R&B instrumentals from Herb Hardesty – the tenor player and secret weapon in Fats Domino's band – one of those incredible players whose name isn't as well known as the sound of his instrument! His sax sounds really great out front and in the lead – tightly grooving late 50s and early 60s rhythm & blues. This first ever CD retrospective of Herb's relatively few recordings as a leader features sessions recorded in New Orleans in '58, NYC in '59 and Cincinnati in '61 – with stellar players that include Hank Jones, Jimmy Davis, Walter Nelson, Clarence Ford and Roy Montrell. 12 of the tracks from a never-released Mercury LP – and the set has 20 tracks in all! Includes "Sassy", "Goldie", "Herb's Mood", "Nat", "Adam And Eva", "Coach Train", "69's Mother's Place, "The Chicken Twist", "Perdido Street" and more – plus 2 tunes with vocals by group guitarist Walter "Papoose" Nelson – "It Must Be Wonderful" and "Why Did We Have To Part".
