BamboosMedicine Man ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A great step forward for The Bamboos – still as funky as ever, but in a much greater range of styles than before! The core deep funk sound we've always loved is still burning away at the bottom – thanks to the ever-trusty grooves of Lance Ferguson and crew – but this time around, there's also a host of guests who really seem to shape the overall feel of the record – Aloe Blacc, Megan Washington, Klye Auldist, Daniel Merriweather, Bobby Flynn, and Ella Thompson – each bringing in their own great flavors, and creating a depth of sound that's mighty nice! Most of these guests are vocalists, but their shifting styles seems to spur the instrumentation onto new heights too – adapting to suit the mood, yet never in a way that's too frenetic to keep the album from being unified overall. Titles include "Where Does The Time Go", "What I Know", "I Got Burned", "Cut Me Down", "Midnight", "Medicine Man", "Window", and "Hello Stranger".

Martin Denny — Exotica 1 & 2 ... CD
Liberty/Scamp, 1957/1958. Used .... $6.99
Classic stuff from the man who brought the Exotica sound to the mainstream! We hardly need to tell you about these albums – as they're virtually the blueprint for countless exotica albums to come, a mixture of 50s easy listening, strange tropical rhythms, and odd little sound effects! Denny's playing with his original combo of Arthur Lyman, Augie Colon, and John Cramer – in a mixture of piano, percussion, vibes, and lots of bird calls! Tracks include "Stone God", "Island Of Dreams", "Escales", "When First I Love", "Bacoa", "Ebb Tide", "Rush Hour In Hong Kong", "Singing Bamboos", "Jungle Flower", "Busy Port", "Lotus Land", and his hit recording of "Quiet Village".

Menagerie — They Shall Inherit ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A mindblower from Menagerie – yet another deep musical chapter in the rich career of Lance Ferguson – an artist we loved for his early club work, then dug as a funk maestro with The Bamboos, now able to hit spiritual jazz sounds with this wonderful new group! The set's got a feel that's more in the Build An Ark/Carlos Nino camp than anything else we've heard on the Tru Thoughts label – and Menagerie's a very cool ensemble with Ferguson on guitar, plus tenor, flute, trumpet, soprano sax, Fender Rhodes, and lots of percussion – and added vibes from Roy Ayers on one key track! Vocals are great – sung by Lance and female singers together, in a mode that recalls some of Ayers' more righteous moments of the 70s – and the album's a stunner all the way through – way deeper than we were expecting. Titles include "They Shall Inherit", "The Chosen", "Jamahlia", "Leroy & The Lion", "The Quietening", and "There Will Come Soft Rains".
Also available: They Shall Inherit (with bonus CD) ... LP $15.99

Various — Black Feeling ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2007. New Copy .... $9.99
A compilation of sorts, but one with a really unified groove – thanks to the fact that most tracks here feature work by all the same players! The album's a project headed up by Lance Ferguson of the Bamboos – and it's a collection of funky 45-styled tunes with a definite old school feel – all billed to different artists, in a mode that's similar to some of the "fake" compilations done by Poets Of Rhythm years back! Like those records, the grooves here are all played by the same batch of musicians, named differently on each track – a combo that features Lance on some super-sharp guitar, and which sounds a lot like the best funky 45 work of The Bamboos. Even cooler, though, is the fact that all the cuts here are older funk classics from the late 60s and early 70s – killer originals that are redone here in versions that are as good, if not better than, the originals. CD features 12 titles that include "Whatcha Feel Is Whatcha Get" by Prince Nafa & His Polynesians, "Yo Yo" by Alvarado Rodriguez Trio + 4, "Honky Tonk Popcorn" by Pacific Rhythm Combo, "Black Feeling" by Luther Harris, "Executive Party" by Zoltar, "Licking Stick Licking Stick" by Rusty Garnett, and "Ghetto Funk" by Queens Community Show Band.

Various — Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $13.99
Funky covers galore – mostly contemporary tracks, but a few classics as well – all pulled together in support of the Craig Charles Show on BBC! Craig's got a long-standing reputation as a soul collector, funk fanatic, and all around groovy guy – and over the past decade, his show has almost become to funk and soul what John Peel's was to rock back in the day – a great place to discover new talents and revisit old ones! This package has all the key Charles hallmarks – and features a range of grooves that includes deep funk, Afrobeat, dub, and a few more contemporary modes – all of them funky. Titles include "Rocket Man" by The Stiff Naked Fools, "Insane In The Membrane" by Prince Fatty, "Hard Work" by Smoove & Turrell, "The Clap Hands Song" by T Bird & The Breaks, "Wait A Minute" by the Excitements, "Amen Brother" by The Bamboos, "Singalong" by Treva Whateva, "Shaft In Africa" by Mighty Showstoppers, "The Snake" by Al Wilson, "Satisfaction" by Incredible Bongo Band, and "The Bump" by The Haggis Horns.

Various — Soul Of Melbourne – Melbourne's Finest Modern Soul & Funk ... CD
Northside (Australia), 2013. New Copy .... $16.99
Heavy sounds from Melbourne, Australia – a really unlikely source for soul music a few decades back, but quite a hotbed of activity in recent years! The set's put together by Lance Ferguson of The Bamboos – whose funky work you'll know from a variety of different projects – and the artists here not only represent a few of his other projects, but also some of his best contemporaries on the funk scene down under – including a few that we'd never heard before! The collection's like finding a pile of deep funk 45s all stacked tight together – and this CD version also features four titles exclusive to this set – tracks that include "Waz That" by The Putbacks, "Baby Your Lovin" by The Electric Empire, "Love & Feeling" by Chet Faker, "Debris" by Axolotl, "Nakamurra" by Hiatus Kaiyote, "Is It Because I'm Black" by Syl Johnson with The Bamboos, "Skeletor" by Cookin On 3 Burners, "Stepping Stones" by Gypsy Brown, "Love Letter" by Clairy Brown & The Bangin Rackettes, and "Hippy Skippy Moonstrut" by The Mighty Show Stoppers.

Various — Soul Shaker Vol 3 – Deep Funk, Soul & Groovy Club Sounds From Today's Scene! ... LP
Record Kicks (Italy), 2006. New Copy .... $16.99
This series just keeps getting better and better – and this hard-hitting third volume may be the funkiest entry so far! The groove here is nearly all modern deep funk – of the Quantic, Daptone, Truth & Soul, and Tramp Records variety – served up with just a bit of the modder touches that used to grace Record Kicks in years back, but which have now mostly been replaced by grittier tunes that are very much in the best tradition of the JBs or The Meters! The cuts here are all current, but the production, instrumentation, and tight funky arrangements all make them sound like lost singles from the end of the 60s – plenty hard and heavy to please even the fussiest fan of the classics – with 12 gems that include "Ratpack" by Big Daddy Moochin, "Tired Feet" by Smoove, "Transcend Me" by The Bamboos with Alice Russell, "Pushin On" by Quantic Soul Orchestra with Alice Russell, "Move Move Move" by The Link Quartet, "La Valla" by Bronx River Parkway, "Aynotchesh Yerefu" by Budos Band, "Practice What You Preach" by Poets Of Rhythm, "Do It Right" by Sweet Vandals, "Take My Time" by Breakestra with Choklate, "Hi Fidelity" by Hi Fly Orchestra, an d"Who Told You" by The Soul Snatchers.

new Kylie Auldist — Still Life ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2012. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
Soaring, soulful sounds from Kylie Auldist – maybe the best so far from this up-and-coming singer! The vocalist gets superb help from Lance Ferguson, of The Bamboos – and together, they both explore a mode that's more swinging 60s mod than some of Lance's usual funk – an upbeat, joyous groove that's some of the best female blue-eyed soul we've heard in years! Instrumentation is filled with great grooves and lots of bouncy brass – and titles include "Still Life", "Counting On You", "Changes", "Daydream", "Nothin Else To Beat Me", and "All In You".
