There's kind of a Blue Lagoon story going on here – as if you couldn't guess from the cover – and who better to score such a film than the Italian maestro of love, Stelvio Cipriani! The soundtrack has a slinky, sexy quality that's way more urban than the setting of the movie – lots of sweet keyboards over basslines, usually moving slow, and sometimes augmented by bits of guitar or vocals – all with this great languid late afternoon afterglow sort of vibe! Edda Dell'Orso adds her lovely voice to a handful of numbers – and the CD features 19 tracks from the film, all nicely remastered!

Crispy, creative work from the team of Blu & Exile – a duo who may well be one of the most creative studio talents we've heard in years! There's loads of warm acoustic samples dropped into the mix – set against a sharper edge from the production, but still delivered with plenty of soul – almost a warmly jazzy vibe we remember from early Tribe Called Quest – with a similarly playful feel. The set features guest work by I Ced, Fashawn, Homeboy Sandman, Johaz of Dag Savage, Black Spade of Hawthorne Headhunters, and ADAD – and titles include "Don't Be Jelly", "The Great Escape", "A Man", "A Letter", "Ease Your Mind", and "O Heaven".

Some of our favorite albums ever from pianist Muhal Richard Abrams – an amazing run of eight records for the Black Saint/Soul Note label – rich in fresh colors, tones, and new musical ideas! There's a sensitivity to some of these records that you don't always get with Abrams – a personal feeling that brings in a much-needed warmth to his complex compositional forms – often in collaboration with other players on the Chicago scene, but also with a wider range of avant players, especially from New York – where Abrams would have a great influence in the 80s. The lineup of musicians here is wonderful – a virtual who's-who of the jazz left at the time, at least from an American perspective – with performances from George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell, Amina Myers, Thurman Barker, Baikida Carroll, Andrew Cyrille, Craig Harris, Stanton Davis, Marty Erlich, Dick Griffin, Cecil Bridgewater, Fred Hopkins, Dierdre Murray, and so many others. The set features 8 full albums, each in a tiny LP-styled sleeve – and titles include Siphumonesty, Mama & Daddy, Blues Forever, Rejoicing With The Light, View From Within, Hearinga Suite, Blu Blu Blu, and Think All Focus One.

A really special record from a really special group – one of two sublime 70s gems from Azteca – a wicked blend of jazz, funk, Latin, and soul – all put together by a young Coke Escovedo! Coke's ostensibly the leader of the group, but there's also a richly collaborative feel going on – a style that brings together jazz players like Tom Harrell on trumpet, Mel Martin on saxes, George Muribus on Fender Rhodes, and Flip Nunez on organ – and Latin players like Victor Pantoja on congas, Coke Escovedo on timbales, and Pete Escovedo on added percussion. In fact, the set's a key early example of the strength of the Escovedo family – and like their best later efforts, the set really stretches out and pushes the boundaries of conventional genres. There's also some great guest work from Lenny White on drums, Mike Nock on keyboards, and Neal Schon on guitars – and vocals are by a range of singers who really keep things fresh. Titles include "Red Onions", "Mazatlan", "Whatcha Gonna Do", "Mexicana, Mexicana", and "Love Is A Stranger".

A lost Burt Bacharach treasure – a bit later than classic vintage, but a wonderful album from the mature maestro – and sometimes overlooked, due to its status as a soundtrack! The work here is totally great – that mellow, easy-flowing style that Burt really perfected around the time of Living Together – served up here in a batch of sweet instrumental tracks, plus a few key vocal numbers with lyrics sung by Jackie DeShannon, Libby Titus, and Michael McDonald – all of whom slide down more into the Bacharach ethos than stand out as their usual selves – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "I Don't Need You Any More", "In Tune", "If We Ever Get Out Of Here", "On The Beach", "I've Got My Mind Made Up", "Find Love", "Luisa", and "I Think I'm Gonna Fall In Love".

A stone classic from Blood Sweat & Tears – and a record that went onto have a tremendous impact in jazz, rock, funk, and soul! The group's format is plenty darn famous – adding a lot of horns to hip riffing grooves – but despite countless plays on oldies stations over the years, this initial album still has a power that's undeniable – a way of putting the whole thing together that really uses the best elements of the late 60s studio – handled with sweet production from James William Guerico that rivals his best work for Chicago! Even the lead vocals by David Clayton Thomas hold up nicely – and the set includes the classics "Variations On A Theme By Eric Satie", "And When I Die", "Smiling Phases", "More & More", "Spinning Wheel", and "You've Made Me So Very Happy". CD features bonus live tracks – "More & More" and "Smiling Phases".

A wild debut from Blood Sweat & Tears – one of those records that forever changed the face of popular music! The set's noteworthy not just for early vocals from Al Kooper – who was a key part of the group at their start – but also for key production work from a young John Simon – who helped arrange a bit, threw in a few musical touches, and really gave the group some focus on record – of the sort that would continue over the course of man albums. The set's got some added strings at points, and there's even some backup vocals from the duo of Valerie Simpson and Melba Moore. Titles include "Overture", "I Can't Quit Her", "Just One Smile", "Without Her", "My Days Are Numbered", "Morning Glory", and "So Much Love/Underture". CD features bonus tracks – "Refugee From Yuhupitz", plus demo versions of "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" and "The Modern Adventures Of Plato Diogenes & Freud".

A late 60s score by Giorgio Gaslini – his work for the 1969 erotic film Le Sorelle – one with some subtle piano and strings-led sweetness, and some groovier, kind of loungey numbers, too! We know little about the film, but we'd wager that subtlety isn't a strength – which makes Gaslini's compositions all the more impressive in the quieter movements, but there's some more dramatic and stripped down jazzy bits that are also quite impressive. Includes some vocalizations by the always great Edda Dell'Orso, too. Titles include "Memory", "Le Rose Blu", "Quicksilver", "Diana", "Alex", "Voce Di Strato Psicologico", "Bliss", "Una Distesa Di Desideri", "Qualcosa Di Incomprensible" and more. Lots of bonus tracks, too – alternate sequences of the original soundtrack titles and other assorted material. 24 tracks in all!

A strange lost relic from Beach Boy Bruce Johnston – recorded in the mid 70s with some sweet AOR production work by Gary Usher. The album's actually a fantastic slice of late 60s sunny LA pop – and features work by Curt Boettcher, Chad Stuart, and a few other lost pop luminaries – working with Johnston in a compressed style of pop that's got some nice similarities to the better 70s work of the Beach Boys. The album includes great remakes of "Deirdre" and "Disney Girls", a strangely nice version of "I Write The Songs" (actually written by Johnston himself!) – and the tracks "Rendezvous", "Won't Somebody Dance With Me", "Pipeline", and "Thank You Baby". A great bit of overlooked soft rock from the 70s! 2 bonus tracks on this Japanese CD edition: single and 12" disco versions of "Pipeline".

A mostly instrumental Exhibit from the mighty K Def – and a top shelf slice of timelessly inventive, head nodding hip hop production! Great stuff with prominent beats that pull you right in, but there's a lot more going on in the mix – sinister bass lines, moody keys, bits of guitar and more. It kicks off a pair of strong tracks with guest MCs – "Exhibit 2A" featuring Seven Shawn of World Renown and "The Fundamentals" with Blu & Quartermaine – and the instrumentals include "Improvs From The Brain", "Mind Boggled", "Get Your Mustard", "Relay The Piece", "Lost My Thought Part 1", "Stay Thinking About Music", "Chord Tester", "Rock It", "Lost My Thought Part 2" and more. 17 tracks in all.

A really wonderful album from Michel Legrand – one of his few jazz efforts to really capture the same dynamic charm of his soundtracks! The album was recorded live – with a mixed group of electric and acoustic players that includes Joe Beck, Randy Brecker, Ron Carter, Phil Woods, and Ron Carter – and the overall approach is spaciously baroque, setting up the tunes with the same clever care as Legrand's best scores, giving the soloists plenty of room to step out and paint strong colors and tones in sound. Legrand sings a bit on one track, and duets with vocalist Lary Shelly on the track "Pieces Of Dreams" – and other titles include "The Saddest Thing Of All", "Splittons", "One At A Time", and "The Friday Fugue".

One of a few key efforts done by Michel Legrand for RCA in the 70s – sessions that stand out as some of his best jazz work from the decade, and which present Legrand in unfettered brilliance, both as a player and arranger! This live date still has the original compositions and sense of arrangement that we love so much in Legrand's soundtrack work – but it's also looser and freer, with more room for improvisation to expand upon the gentle warmth of Michel's imagination. Legrand is on piano – both electric and acoustic – and other players include Phil Woods on alto, Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on drums, and George Davis on guitars. Legrand sings a bit, in his beautiful sort of way – scatting wonderfully on a version of "Orson's Theme", and performing the lyrics on the haunting "Blue Green Grey & Gone". Other titles include "Organ Eyes", "I Will Wait For You", and "Watch What Happens".

A Sunshine Pop treasure – and a record that perfectly straddles a few different strands of late 60s pop! The quintet have fabulous harmonies – of the sort rooted in The Four Freshmen, and given a sunny finish by The Beach Boys – but they also move here in a way that prefaces soft rock modes of the decade to come – working in arrangements from Jack Pleis that still have plenty of jazz and pop, but which also compress things in a cool way too – giving the whole album a sublime sound that's really unique! The album's not exactly like the Roger Nichols & The Small Circle of Friends, but it's definitely got a similar vibe – and no surprise, the group start things off with a great version of "Don't Take Your Time". Other tracks include "Where Do I Go", "Mornin I'll Be Movin On", "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "Love Years Coming", "A Time For Us", and "Free & Easy". Includes two bonus tracks – "Time" and "Mirror Maze Lady".

The latest audio dispensary system from Oh No – who's carved a pretty solid niche as an unpredictable, indefatigable hip hop conceptualist – this one a suite of tracks inspired by snake oil style newspaper, radio and television advertisements from decades past! Oh No is on the beats and production here on a mix of thematic instros and vocal tracks with guests Declaime & Georgia Anne Muldrow, Souls Of Mischief, Blu & Med, Gangrene partner Alchemist, Rapsody & Psalm One and others. Includes "Intro Doctor Visit", "Creepers", "Jones's" feat Blu & MED, "Wet 'Em Up", "The Difference", "Perfect Cylinders", "Animals" with Chali 2Na & Roc C, "Rollin' Up" with Alchemist, "Drifters", "Improvement" with Declaime & Georgia Anne Muldrow and more. A pretty great soundtrack from Riz Ortolani for the early 70s War Goddess flick, aka Le Guerriere Dal Seno Nudo, aka Le Amazzoni – and like the best of Ortotani's work for somewhat pulpy flicks of the era, it's got sweep, intimacy and all around strengths that go above and beyond! The sounds range from drum-led action with sweeping string tension and beyond. This great Quartet edition includes all the tracks from the original Japanese soundtrack album release and adds on a whopping 12 bonus tracks! 22 in all: "Le Amazzoni", "Montagne Blu", "Rampianto E Paura", "Montagne Blue", "La Lunga Attesa", "Echi E Trasparenze" and more.

A slept on solo effort from Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys – released in 1983 and a record brings some surprising touches to the production – harder-charging rave up guitars being the one that stands out – still with big hooks and Carl's instantly identifiable vocals! A left turn on the sunny, post 70s highway Beach Boys related projects, yet still in the family. Titles include "She's Mine", "Of The Times", "Young Blood", "If I Could Talk To Love", "One More Night Alone" and more, plus the bonus track "Givin You Up (Single edit)".

A surprisingly sweet solo effort from Beach Boy Dennis Wilson – a record of surprising depth and darkness, and arguably stronger than most of the albums at the time from the larger group! Dennis produced the album himself, with some executive help from James William Guerico – whose guidance here seems key, given the overall quality of the set. There's some echoes of Beach Boys' styles in the music, but the sound is much more personal as well – Wilson's ragged vocals in the lead on all numbers, sometimes upfront and fragile, sometimes given a bit more umph through the use of processing – at that level that the whole group would often experience in the studio during the 70s. The album's as much of a showcase for Dennis' writing skills as it is for his vocals – and songs are co-written with co-producer Gregg Jakobson, as well as Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Karen Lamm-Wilson. Titles include "River Song", "Friday Night", "Thoughts Of You", "Dreamer", "Time", "You And I", and "What's Wrong". This Japanese edition of the vital 2CD version of the album is totally great - with a booklet with notes and photos – notes in Japanese, but the track info and personnel details are included in English – and all those great bonus tracks that include "Mexico", "Holy Man", "Only With You", and "Tug Of Love". Disc Two includes with the sessions for the unreleased Bambu album – with tracks that include "School Girl", "It's Not Too Late", "Under The Moonlight", "Are You Real", "He's A Bum", "Cocktails", "I Love You", "Constant Companion", and "Time For Bed", "Holy Man Taylor Hawkins Version)" and more.

Blood Sweat & Tears are really stretching out here – working their already-famous magic through a range of great tunes, both originals and covers – and coming up with some great longer-form expressions of their sound in the process! David Clayton-Thomas is firmly in the lead on vocals – but at points, the instrumentation almost takes over even more – especially on some of the jazz-heavy jam numbers that would go onto shape generations of high school and college music ensembles! Side two features the excellent "Symphony For The Devil/Sympathy For The Devil" suite – and other cuts include "He's A Runner", "The Battle", "Lucretia MacEvil", "Lonesome Suzie", "Fire & Rain", "40,000 Headmen", and "Hi De Ho".

An excellent full length set of beats & genius from J Dilla – put together by fellow beatmaker extraordinaire Pete Rock, with all Dilla beats – a surprising triumph! Call us jaded, but honestly, we weren't sure how deep the well could go of ready-to-go beats from Dilla, but this stuff is truly top shelf – nearly as strong as the instant classic Donuts from a few years back! Pete Rock crafts the set as if it's a radio show or mixtape, but his skill in so doing is well above and beyond the norm – neither Pete's interjections nor the guest rappers ever get in the way of the flow, it's as smooth as can be. Vocal guests include Ma Dukes (the album was made under Ma's auspices), plus Lil Fame & MOP, Black Thought, Frank Nitty of Frank N Dank, Doom, Illa J & Cue D, Blu, and others. Titles include "King", "I Told Yall", "Smoke" feat Blu, "CaDILLAc". "Fire Wood Drumstix" feat Doom, "Big Day", "24K Rap" feat Havoc of Mobb Deep & Raekwon, "Coming Back", "Mythsysizer" and more. 28 tracks in all, about an hour of unreleased Dilla!

An album with a sweet title, but a very hard groove – a stone stormer from Japanese drummer Takeo Moriyama – put together with these soaring reed lines that almost make the whole thing feel like an early 70s album from Elvin Jones! There's a very spiritual feel to the music at times – a searching quality that comes through especially in the work on tenor from Yoshio Kuniyasu, and additional flute and alto from Kochi Matsukze – as well as in the piano from Fumio Itabashi, who works here with his best modal impulses – really building up the groove in a wonderful way, and helping to keep the whole thing as soulful as some of the best US work of this nature from the mid 70s. Tracks are all originals, in Japanese – save for the group's version of the famous title tune, which offers up one mellower moment.

One of the more understated Japanese sessions from drummer Elvin Jones – but a great date that also really lets you hear his wonderful touch on the drums! The record's a collaboration with alto player Akira Ohmori, who blows here with this deft, soulful quality that's mighty nice – more 70s than the date of this album would imply, and set up in a sensitive quartet with great work on piano from Fumio Itabashi! There's a spacious quality to the record that Jones really respects – never coming on too strong, and instead shading in these complex rhythm elements that spark nicely with Akira's alto. Titles include "Mingus Mood", "Bloomdido", "Saxology", "I Concentrate On You", and "A Part Of Me".

A totally groovy soundtrack from Giovanni Fusco from the late 60s – is work for Il Sesso Degli Angeli – with sounds that range from stripped down moddish pieces, to acoustic guitar grooves to Italian pop styles of the time – great stuff that's somehow never been issued before this release on Beat Records! Includes 17 sequences of the title theme with a pretty dynamic stylistic range, plus "Pink Purple Yellow And Red", "Verde Rosso Giallo E Blu" and more.

Classic early European material by Dizzy Gillespie – recorded in Paris in the early 50s, and featuring backing by players that include Don Byas, Wade Legge, Jean-Jacques Tilche, and Bill Clark. The groove runs from straight bop to swing, with touches of Cubop in the mix, thanks to conga work by Humberto Canto Morales. There's a total of 21 tracks in all – and this is the best-ever compilation of the material we've ever seen, especially as much of it was issued on smaller eps, and always gets cast over different sets when it comes out. Titles include "Cognac Blues", "Sabla Y Blu", "Lullaby In Rhythm", "Blue Moon", "Mama's Blues", "Taking A Chance On Love", and "Moon Nocturne".

An amazing tribute to the genius of Curt Boettcher and Millenium – a set that not only features the group's classic Columbia album, but also a host of rarities and solo projects as well! The beautiful package features all albums in paper sleeve LP-styled covers, packaged in a big box with full notes – almost like finding a lost history of music that never existed in the mainstream market – finally brought together by a CD-based time machine! So, in addition to the core classic album Begin, you also get the Pieces collection of Millenium rarities – and the Voices Of Millenium set too. Then, the collection also features the albums Another Time and Chicken Little Was Right by Curt Boettcher, Everything For You and Do Onto Others by Sandy Salisbury, and Many Are The Times by Lee Mallory – all beautifully pressed and delightfully packaged!

A jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night".

Great stuff! Although a live album, Gratitude is one of Earth Wind & Fire's greatest from the mid 70s – a very tight batch of grooves that proves that Maurice White & Co. could play just as well on stage as they could in the studio – and the noise of the crowd going wild is enough to confirm that! And although a live set, the record's actually a bit half and half – with a few added studio tunes to keep the hits coming. Includes their classic version of Skip Scarborough's "Can't Hide Love", plus the mellow jams "Yearnin' Learnin'" and "Reasons", the funky "Shining Star", and a great cover of "Sun Goddess", which was also done by Ramsey Lewis with the group.

A great idea for a compilation – a really cool set that focuses on the best days when jazz and rock were really combined together – that stretch in the late 60s and early 70s when horns were equally blended with guitars, in a groove that was plenty powerful overall! Some of the numbers here are familiar giants of the genres, and others are a bit surprising – and together, the music really does a great job tracing this evolving trend through its growth in the 70s! Titles include "Killing Floor" by Electric Flag, "Get It On" by Chase, "What Is Hip" by Tower Of Power, "Hold On" by Memphis Horns, "Mercy Mercy Mercy" by The Buckinghams, "Gonna Fly Now" by Maynard Ferguson, "Some Skunk Funk" by Brecker Brothers, "Vehicle" by Ides Of March, "In The Stone" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Non Pacem" by Azteca, "Goldmine" by Sons Of Champlin, and "New York" by Dreams.

The title's no joke, as Earth Wind & Fire are definitely part of the electric universe of early 80s Columbia Records – the galaxy that also includes Herbie Hancock during his electro years! As a result, there's a lot more keyboards and electric rhythms in the set than before – a new setting for the still-positive expressions of the group – one that works especially well on the mellower cuts! These really have the group opening up their best ballad modes – stretching out to crossover nicely, yet still with a quality level that's head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries. Of course, the sweet vocals of Philip Bailey really help put over some of the best cuts too! Titles include "Moonwalk", "Touch", "Could It Be Right", "Sweet Sassy Lady", "Spirit Of A New World", and "We're Living In Our Own Time".

A strange, yet cool little record from Terry Melcher! Melcher was the consummate LA hipster – the son of Doris Day, a friend of Brian Wilson, and allegedly the real target of The Manson Family when Sharon Tate was knocked off – that's a whole heck of a lot of 60s and 70s baggage – but he's a pretty terrific artist who deserves some more praise to go with all the notoriety! This obscure set from the mid 70s is a perfect set of desperado pop – country-tinged tunes in kind of a Graham Parsons/late Byrds sort of way, with so-Cal C&W tunes written by Melcher and Lee Hazelwood! Titles include "Fire In A Rainstorm", "Take It To Mexico", "High Rollers", "Card Game", and "Rosarito".

Great rootsy Cajun accordion – a version of the genre that's much grittier than any of the later versions that were spread more strongly through the mainstream – and definitely light years from the touristy sounds heard in more recent years! This set offers up a host of rare small label recordings from Nathan Abshire – a player who really handles his instrument with a personal touch – almost as raw and soulful as a harmonica in the hands of a blues musician, and often supported by rhythms that are pretty darn blue as well – although also with a definite Louisiana sound! The package features material with the Pine Grove Boys and Balfa Brothers group, plus others by Nathan on his own – and the set features 25 titles that include "Pine Grove Blues", "Offshore Blues", "Shamrock", "J'Etais Au Bal", "Choupique Two Step", "Partie A Grand Basile", and "Dying In Misery".

Finally – the complete story of The Ad Libs – a group known for their classic singles of the 60s, but one who never issued a full-length album of their own! This great little set more than corrects that fact – by bringing together 9 rare singles for the Blue Cat label, plus another 14 previously unissued tracks – including some rare acapella demos, alternate versions, and tracks that never made it onto vinyl back in the 60s! The issued singles alone are great – a beautiful blend of one gal and four guy singers, handled with a style that's on the rougher edge of the New York style of soul at the time. And when you hit the demo material, the vocals really take off – since there's no studio instrumentation at all, and the harmonies are left to handle all the rhythm and melody chores as well. These demo tracks are really wonderful, with a feel that's almost like old school vocal harmony soul – and have us respecting the group even more than ever. Titles include "Kicked Around", "Ask Anybody", "On The Corner", "The Slime", "Johnny My Boy", "I'm Just A Down Home Girl", and "The Boy From New York City" – plus "You'll Always Be In Style", and demo versions of "Strange Things", "The Tide Has Turned", "Santa's On His Way", "Oo Wee Oh Me Oh My", "Come On & Help Me", and "Kicked Around".

Almost an underground groove supergroup – given that the set features work from Earl Zinger (Rob Gallagher of Galliano) at the helm, production from 2 Banks Of 4, vocals from Valerie Etienne, and funky rhythms from Shawn Lee! The combination of talents come together here in a very new way – with a style that's much grittier and earlier than before, although still pretty darn groovy overall – almost putting a raspy old school touch on a scene that's definitely matured on its own, and may well be old enough to lay claim to the rootsy sound of this set! Rob's songwriting has definitely matured, and at some of the best moments, there's almost a British Tom Waits-y kind of quality to the set. At this point, things were getting better from Cannonball – as he was getting a lot more of a handle on his style as a soloist, and began sticking to the tight little combo sound that would make him a star in the 60s. This album was recorded slightly before Cannon's classic lineup would begin to gell – but it features some very able company in the form of Art Blakey, Wynton Kelly, and Milt Jackson, with a tight hard bop sound to the group. The title cut's a near-classic, and other tunes include "Sounds For Sid", "Groovin High", "Serves Me Right", and "Blues Oriental".

A lost treasure from Antiono Adolfo – keyboard player, arranger, and one of the greatest Brazilian talents of his generation! Adolfo's sound and style is contemporaneous with the best work of Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, and others – and like them, he has an approach that mixes together jazz, MPB, baroque orchestrations, easy scoring, and a bit of funk – similar to the best work of the Blue Brazil generation on EMI/Odeon Records. The approach is one that's rarely been matched by any other artist – and it's a strong reason why Adolfo's records from this period are extremely sought after in the world of collectors. This beautiful album from 1970 has Adolfo working with the group A Brazuca – who bring some wonderful vocal harmonies to the set, mixing with strings, guitars, and some great electric piano work from Adolfo. Includes the breezy classic "Transamazonica", plus the cuts "Que Se Dane", "Atencao Atencao", "Claudia", "Panorama", "Tributo A Victor Manga", "Caminhada", "Grilopus No 1", and "Cotidiano".

Smoking grooves from an incredible group – the amazing Afro Blues Quintet, a combo with a sound like no other! These guys were never one for stardom, but during the mid and late 60s, they burned up the west coast scene with an incredible blend of vibes, piano, and reeds – often kicked up nicely with some hard-rolling rhythm work that gave their tracks a similar mod groove to classics by Johnny Lytle, Ramsey Lewis, or Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers! But the real difference with the ABQ (if we can call them that!) is that they had a really spacious approach to their sound – never putting too much into the mix, and instead using the space between the notes every bit as much as the notes themselves. The grooves are great, and since most of this work has never been reissued, the set's totally fresh to the ears of most listeners! As usual, the folks at BGP have done a great job with the notes – and the set features 22 tracks from the group's Mira, Surrey, and Crestview recordings – titles that include "Monkey Time", "Freaks", "La La La", "Southside Habit", "Mirror Image", "Afro Rock", "Evening Of The Beast", "Spartacus", "Candie Luv", and "Our Mambo".

A great step forward for the Afro Latin Vintage Orchestra – even better than their previous album, and a set that beautifully mixes together jazz, Latin, and African elements into one seamless groove! Percussionist Masta Conga is at the head of the group – leading the ensemble with a unique vision that's less of the overdone Afro Funk you might know from other contemporary combos – and more of a classic 60s blend of elements – especially that unique hybrid of Latin modes you'd get from west coast groups – like the Afro Latin Soultet or Afro Blues Quintet – both clear choices of inspiration, given this group's name! Yet there's also some 70s elements moving through the grooves too – thanks to great Fender Rhodes lines, and bits of other keyboards too – often used in these cool spare ways that work perfectly with the mix of funk and Latin in the rhythms, and occasional bits of strings as well. Most tracks are instrumental, although there are a bit of vocals on the set – and titles include "Requiem Pour Un Grooveur", "Petrof Sublimination", "Onze De France", "Gibbon's Dub", and "Dimension 7".

One of their early classics, and still one of the greatest groups with roots in the Chicago AACM scene. Henry Threadgill, Fred Hopkins, and Steve McCall play modern experimental versions of compositions by Jelly Roll Morton and Scot Joplin – plus Threadgill's own "Paille Street".

Toshiko Akioshi makes a trip back to the Japanese jazz scene in the early 60s – for this great little session that has her meeting up with "old pals" from previous years – including Sadao Watanabe on alto sax, Akira Miyazawa on tenor, and Hideo Shiraki on drums! The reunion is a really great one – just the kind of session that stands out as special in the careers of all artists involved – especially Toshiko, who seems to have hit a new level of maturity in her work! The style here is essentially hardbop, but brought together with some well-penned head arrangements that hint at the more sophisticated directions Akikoshi would take in her later years – yet still preserve all the boppish spontaneity of her youth. The set's on a par with the best on Blue Note or Impulse in the US at the time – and is key proof that at the right moments, the Japanese jazz scene of the early 60s was really something to rave about! Titles include "Quebec", "Old Pals", "Watasu No Biethovin", "So What", and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes".

Incredible early work from Lorez Alexandria – the kind of albums that instantly set her apart from other singers of the 50s, reissued here properly for the first time in years! On This Is Lorez, the singer is working with sublime small combo backings from the group of pianist King Fleming – an unusual Chicago ensemble that includes Wilber Wynn on guitar, Ronald Wilson on flute and oboe, Vernel Fournier on drums, and Audrey Jones on bongos – a musical lineup that brings in a different sort of sophistication to the record, shading tunes with moody colors on flute and oboe that perfectly support Alexandria's soulful and sensitive interpretations of the tunes. The whole thing is pure genius, and a key look at the new levels of sophistication that were bubbling everywhere on the Chicago scene during the years of Jamal and Sun Ra. Lorez Sings Pres follows in a very similar mode – with backing by a Chicago group that again includes King Fleming piano, plus Charles Stepney on vibes, Paul Serrano on trumpet, and Vernel Fournier on drums – an extremely hip lineup that makes the record far more than just the Lester Young tribute promised in the title! But despite the instrumentalists, the real star on all sides is Alexandria – who sings with dark tones and deep colors that go far beyond conventional jazz vocals – all carried off with that slightly breathy mode that was one more unique aspect of her work! CD features all tracks from both albums – a total of 22 titles that include "Snowstorm", "I'm Glad There Is You", "The Sky Is Crying", "I'm Making Believe", "Necessity", "Penthouse Serenade", "DB Blues", "This Year's Kisses", "Easy Living", "No Eyes Blues", "Jumping With Symphony Sid", and a key early reading of "Baltimore Oriole".

A 60s bossa classic from Johnny Alf – a set that really showcases the bluer side of bossa at the time! The set's got a rich, sophisticated sort of sound – right up there with the best Elenco or Forma vocal sessions of the 60s, thanks to orchestrations by Jose Briamonte, which move along with this really dark undercurrent. Alf's vocals and piano contrast nicely, with these oddly-turning notes that are really unique – a distinct approach that made Johnny one of the most standout talents of this new generation. This album's easily one of his greatest efforts – and titles include "Gismi", "Kao Xango", "Cancao Pra Disfacar", "Ceu Alegre", "Eu So Sei", and "Bossa So". CD features the bonus track "Eu E A Brisa".

Beautifully free alto work from Byron Allen – a player who really shines brightly on this rare session for ESP Records – one of the few ever cut under his own name! Allen's got a style that's right up there with the 60s best from Ornette Coleman or Marion Brown – able to move with a fluidity that's breathless, even amidst rhythms that are very loose and open – as the trio here works in a style that almost echoes some of the harmelodic modes of Coleman, but which eventually pushes farther towards the freedoms of other artists on ESP! The set has some wonderful bass from Maceo Gilchrist, whose round, rolling tones really make the album sparkle – as do the punctuated drums of Ted Robinson. Titles include "Today's Blues Tomorrow", "Time Is Past", "Three Steps In The Right Direction", and "Decision For The Cole-Man".

A sweet Latin-styled set from trumpeter Herb Alpert – but one that's got a very different vibe than his faux Latin grooves of the 60s! The set here is done with key contributions from both Juan Carlos Calderon as a songwriter, and Jose Quintana as a producer – both talents who really help Herb reshape his groove in a mighty nice way! Backings are big, and somewhat smooth – as in the "Rise" era – but there's also some Latin jazz elements in the mix too, and an overall approach that isn't nearly as cluttered as you might expect for the time – with an especially strong emphasis on Herb's trumpet solos in the lead. The set was the first issued on the A&M Latin label – AyM Discos – and also features a bit of Spanish language vocals as well. Titles include "Fandango", "Route 101", "Angel", "Aria", "Sugarloaf", "Coco Loco", "Latin Medley", "California Blues", and "Push & Pull".

Classic mellow Jug – from a time when Prestige discovered that Gene Ammons would sell equally well to the mellow jazz crowd as to the jukebox jumpers! This set brings together tracks from 3 Gene Ammons 60s albums – 2 of which were best sellers, Velvet Soul and Sock, the last of which, Night Lights, was a lesser known number cut at the end of the 60s. Tracks are with a number of different groups – a few with a larger one, and others with smaller combo that features either organ or piano. There's a total of 13 tracks in all – and titles include "Calypso Blues", "Nature Boy", "Blue Coolade", "Scam", "Cara Mia", "Night Lights", "Salome's Tune", "Velvet Soul", "Stranger In Town", and "Light N Up".

A pair of hard-wailing tenor albums on Verve – both of them great! Boss Tenors In Orbit is a studio album, but one that really has Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt recreating some of the bold energy of their live shows – coming across with a vibe that's much more Prestige Records than Verve, thanks to the presence of the Don Patterson trio on the set! Backing is by Don on Hammond, Paul Weeden on guitar, and Billy James on drums – a nicely loose combo that really lets the tenorists stretch out and show their stuff. The cuts are mostly standard material – "John Brown's Body", "Walkin", "Long Ago And Far Away" – but the twin-tenor sound is great, and Patterson's free organ lines riff away nicely! On Boss Tenors, Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt go head to head in this classic album of tracks that perfectly captures the joy and fury of their live performances from years before! The record was cut in Chicago with a very hard rhythm section that includes John Houston on piano, Charles Williams on bass, and George Brown on drums – and it's way heavier than the usual Verve "meeting of the masters" session, and feels more like a record that should have been issued on Prestige or Argo. Both players are impeccable, and the solos stretch out for a long long very live time. Titles include "Blues Up & Down", "The One Before This", and "Counter Clockwise" – but these guys even groove amazingly on standards like "Autumn Leaves" and "No Greater Love".

A great follow-up EP to Anika's addictive Stones Throw debut – a darkness-tinged batch of covers – bringing some great songs by The Kinks, The Crystals, Chromatics and Shocking Blue along with a pair of dubbed up versions of earlier Anika singles. There's a bit of no wave vibe of stark electronics and moody vocals, but Anika's got an overall presense unlike anyone else. Once again she gets some excellent production by Geoff Barrow of Beak> and Portishead. Titles include "I Go To Sleep", "He Hit Me", "Love Buzz", "In The City", "No One's There (Dub)" and "Yang Yang (Dub)".

A massive amount of early work by The Animals – brought together in one overstuffed package with some unreleased tracks as well! The group here have a great rough sound – much more bluesy than in later years, which turns out to be a perfect setting for the young Eric Burdon – whose vocals soar out wonderfully over a mix of original tunes and remakes of American classics by folks like Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Sam Cooke, Bo Diddley, and others! Producer Mickie Most really knows how to keep the right sort of edge on the tunes – lots of raw power in the instrumentation, especially the Hammond and guitar – and a stark, dark quality to Eric's vocals that went onto become the stuff of legend. Package features 40 tracks in all – with titles that include "I Believe To My Soul", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "Club A Go Go", "For Miss Caulker", "Feel", "Boom Boom", "Don't Want Much", "It's My Life", "House Of The Rising Sun", "We've Gotta Get Out Of This Place", and "I'm Gonna Change The World".

The most outwardly political album to date from Antibalas – and quite possibly the funkiest one too! The set's got the group really grooving hard in their 70s Afro Funk-inspired vein – jamming at a level that would make Fela Kuti blush – working together with a fierce array of percussion, horns, keyboards, and guitars to jam up a groove that stretches back to the best days of the African-styled funk of the classic years. The whole thing's wonderful – every bit as essential for any fan of 70s Fela as it is for the current deep funk underground of which Antibalas are a part – and if you had any fear that their move to a semi-major label would hurt them, rest assured that they sound better than ever! Titles include "Big Man", "Obanla'e", "Elephant", "Sister", "Pay Back Africa", and "Who Is This America Dem Speak Of Today?" Also features the bonus track "Money Talks".

A classic live date from Satchmo – and expanded to include the complete performances on that legendary night at Boston's Symphony Hall – for the first time ever! Recorded in November of 1947 and originally released in '51, it's never before been issued with both the first and second sets that night. There's also a number of great tunes here that were released before in edited versions, but fully presented here. It's such wonderful stuff – both as a top-shelf document of this period of American jazz – and as a brilliant example of Satcho's charming stage presence. His trumpet and solo vocals are well captured, and you can here up humming along on the instrumentals, too. Previously unissued material from the great Harry Arnold – excellent mid 60s big band sessions, as creative as they are hard-swinging! Arnold's group here is at the top of its form – working together with a rich array of tones and colors that show the best legacies of 50s modern jazz in the large ensemble idiom – yet with a lean quality that really allows lots of voice from the soloists, too – a lineup that includes Arne Domnerus, Jan Johansson, Lars Farnlov, Bengt-Arne Wallin, and Georg Riedel! Arrangements are by Wallin, Pete Jacques, and others – but it's Arnold who clearly knows how to make the whole thing hold together this well. A lost chapter in the career of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – an obscure early 70s album, issued by the mostly-blues Paula Records label in Louisiana, and one of the hardest to find albums in their catalog! The album features 3 long tracks – "Chi-Congo", "Enlorfe", and "Hippparippp" – played in an open and inventive style that recalls the best of the group's work in Paris at the end of the 60s. The core group of Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, and Don Moye manage to get their hands on more instruments than you'd hear from the entire percussion section of an orchestra – and with amazing results!

Soprano voice and four different saxophones – a really unusual combination, with sparkling musical results! The title's a bit hokey, but the record's got a wonderfully fresh feel – angular lines from this Dutch sax quartet – very much in the best spirit of 80s experiments in the style – but mixed with wonderful lead vocals from Claron McFadden – a singer with an amazing range, and one who sings both lyrics and wordless passages on the record! The voice is often used as a fifth instrument on the record – combining beautifully with the sounds of the reed players, in a mode that works especially well without any piano, bass, or drums. An incendiary collection of mid-to-late 60s material from The Attack – a proponent of the same UK scene that spawned The Creation and The Who – and influenced later firebrands like The Buzzcocks and other punk era greats! A lost Italian gem from the 60s! Bassist Giorgio Azzolini was one of Italy's best players during the postwar years, and this handsome reissue brings to light one of his rarer sessions from the 60s. The record's a lyrical septet session, with Azzolini's warm round basslines right up front, and beautiful solo work by a young Gato Barbieri on tenor, Franco Ambrosetti on trumpet, and Renato Sellani on piano. The session has the warmth and sensitivity of some of Horace Silver's best early 60's Blue Note work, and the tracks include "Tribute To Someone" by Herbie Hancock, "Sometime Ago" by Sergio Mihanovic, "The Stroller" by Benny Golson, and "Hiroshima" by Gato Barbieri. Very nice stuff – and with the usual high level of Rearward packaging!

Joan Baez, back when she was really pretty darn amazing – a young, fresh, powerful force in 60s folk music! The set features Baez on vocals and guitar – with additional electric guitar on a few tracks, a bit of mandolin, and some bass. Includes great readings of Dylan tunes "Farewell Angelina", "It's All Over Now Baby Blue", "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", and "Daddy You Been On My Mind" – plus Donovan's "Colours".

Bessie Smith by LaVern Baker – a great blend of modes that really comes off great! Instead of sounding like a throwback blues album, the set comes across with a nice degree of contemporary class – thanks in part to a jazzy presentation that's a bit different than some of Baker's other music of the time – and which sports reeds from Sahib Shihab, tenor from Paul Quinichette, trumpet from Buck Clayton, and trombone from Jimmy Cleveland! Baker's voice is in fine form in this comfortable setting – and really works magic with tracks that include "After You've Gone", "Preaching The Blues", "Empty Bed Blues", "Back Water Blues", and "Gimme A Pigfoot".

A rare later album from 50s guitar giant Mickey Baker – recorded overseas, and with a different vibe than his legendary R&B work – including some nice funky moments too! The album's not really jazz, and it's hardly rock at all – and instead is more of a bluesy effort with slight undercurrents of funk – some modern touches provided by the tight rhythms of bassist Alex Sanders and his combo – who provide a nice backdrop for Baker's sharp lines on guitar! Mickey's picked up a few modern tones over the years, but still has plenty of grit in his grooves – and titles include "Pop Off", "Prelude", "Ouagadougou", "Sophie", "Wag Your Tail", "Shadadabah", and "Alexander's Funk Time".

Bruce Barth is a pianist who always knows how to open up and run – making him an excellent choice for the Smalls Live series – easily some of the best-recorded live jazz CDs in recent years! Barth's touch on the keys is amazing – very fluid, and a mixture of sharp tones and gentler elements – always incredibly well-conceived, and really holding up in the space of the album's extended tunes – which also are almost all original compositions as well! The trio features Vincente Archer on bass and Rudy Royston on drums – and titles include "Yama", "Almost Blues", "Oh Yes I Will", "Afternoon In Lledia", and "Wilsonian Alto".

Genius work from Les Baxter – two of his best albums for Capitol, back to back on one CD! Ritual Of The Savage is one of those must-have albums from the 50s – a super-huge record upon its initial release, and an album that pushed the genre of exotica far further than most others at the time! Before this record, most attempts at exotica were simple instrumental pop, colored with slight worldly instrumentation – or too-dreamy recordings, putting over a sleepy version of life on the islands. Enter Les Baxter, who had an amazing ear for sounds, rhythms, and arrangements – one that was the first to record this sort of music in a way that was sonically evocative, and could stand on its own without other referents. Instrumentation is often conventional, but used oddly here – and Baxter's original compositions are all pretty darn great – playful without being goofy, and nicely mixing Latin and Pacific rhythms at the bottom. Titles include "Busy Port", "The Ritual", "Coronation", "Jungle Jalopy", and Les' original version of "Quiet Village". Heck, even the cover is gorgeous – with a brilliant blue illustration of some guy putting the moves on a woman amidst spooky tribal relics! The Passions is a really obscure box set recording – done as Les Baxter's classic exploitation of "a woman's passions", using vocalist Bas Sheva in the role of the tormented female! Shiva's got a bold, evocative style that's not unlike Yma Sumac – and she sings here wordlessly, as an added instrument on top of Baxter's orchestrations – playing the role of the inner psyche of woman, on titles that include "Lust", "Terror", "Joy", "Hate", "Ecstasy", and "Despair"! The whole thing's a mini docu-drama in sound – beautifully recorded in a flurry of red, blue, and other chromatic hues – not as exotic as Baxter's other work from the 50s, but equally great as a modern sonic psychoanalytic text!

One of the rarest albums by Les Baxter – and one of the best! The record features an excellent batch of "space exotica" tracks, set amidst some very lively arrangements, all packaged in one of the greatest album covers of the 50s! Les' writing and leading are as excellent as always, and the record has a beautiful sound that never gets as soppy as some of the other 50s space-age albums. Titles include "A Distant Star", "Moonscape", "Mr. Robot", "The Commuter", and "The Other Side Of The Moon". This CD edition includes a heck of a lot of great bonus material – a selection of mid 50s singles by Baxter, both a-sides and b-sides – some a bit more pop and less exotica oriented, but still plenty off beat and and nicely odd, and some sweeter numbers, too. Includes the 12 tracks from the original album, and 18 bonus tracks, including "Cornflakes", "Toy Tigers", "Sinner Man", "Blue Echo", "Cherchez La Femme", "Molodia Loca", "Please Mr Sun" and much more.

Great contemporary sounds from Brazil – a collaboration between Nina Becker and Marcelo Callado – done with a really playfully creative feel! Nina's sung recently with Orquesta Imperial, and Marcelo's the drummer in Caetano Veloso's recent group – and the record definitely has echoes of both of those worlds – very creative songwriting, thoughtful interplay between acoustic and electric instrumentation, and a freshly crispy sensibility on the production – which keeps a gentle edge to most of the tunes. Titles include "Cade Voce", "Blues", "Futuro", "Nuvem", "Packing To Leave", and "Essa Menina".

Overlooked later work from trumpeter Harry Beckett – material that really sparkles with a lot of warmth and imagination, and which is pulled together from a collection of different sessions in the late 80s and early 90s! The package features Beckett in a number of settings – including a beautiful duet with pianist Chris McGregor on the title track "Maxine", another duet with pianist Django Bates on "Les Jardins Du Casino", a 24 minute tune titled "Cozy N Rozy" played with a quintet that features McGregor on piano and Courtney Pine on tenor, a sweet take on Jacques Brel's "Amsterdam" in a trio with Joachim Kuhn on piano and JF Jenny Clarke on bass, and two group numbers with Annie Whitehead on trombone and John Burgess on flute and sax – on the tunes "Falling In Love With Love" and "Bessie's Blues".

Socking soul from the 60s – a record with American roots and a very groovy British sound! The set was the second full length album from Madeline Bell – an American singer transplanted to the mod UK scene of the 60s, where she really flourished in a rich career of hit singles, endless session work, and later fame with the group Blue Mink. The tunes on this set are a wonderful bridge between Madeline's two worlds – and have a sound that's a lot like the uptown soul coming out of the US at the time – sweet and smooth arrangements, topped by deeper soul vocals that make for a wonderful juxtaposition. Arrangements are by British talents Arthur Greenslade, Ian Green, and Keith Mansfield – and titles include "Step Inside Love", "Hold It", "Help Yourself", "After All Is Said & Done", "For Your Pleasure", and "It's Up To You". CD features bonus singles too – 6 more tracks that include "Thinkin", "Go Ahead On", "How Much I Do Love You", "What'm I Supposed To Do", and "We're So Much In Love".

A much more solidly American album than some of Vicki Benet's other efforts of the time – which were usually more French-styled than this one! This time around, Vicki's got a great breathy style that's right up there with Julie London on Liberty – a late 50s sexiness that perfectly matches her ice blond look on the cover, and her slinky slinky dress! Arrangements are relatively gentle – strings, but never too lush – and Vicki hangs mostly in a ballad mode that's perfect for the breathiness of the recording. Titles include "Our Very Own", "The Boy Next Door", "Love Me", "There's A Small Hotel", "A Shade Of Blue", and "Heartstring Melody".

Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy backings. Highlights include "No Sooner Said Than Done", which has some very weird processing on the guitar; "Full Compass", which has some nice hard drums; and "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams", a mellow moody track. CD also features 3 bonus tracks – the previously unreleased "From Now On", and new mixes of "Serbian Blue" and "Take The A Train".

Seminal Chicago sounds from cornetist Josh Berman – and a record that's not just a key example of his talents, but of the whole energy of the Windy City scene as well! There's a nice gag in the "His Gang" on the cover of the record – but it's also somewhat well put, too – as Berman's definitely got ears for the old-time sounds such a name might imply – yet always has ways of making those older modes come out with freshly modern energy! The balance is amazing – and really shows Josh's ear for trad jazz, mixed with his contemporary avant expressions – a pan-historical jazz mode that's hardly ever been handled this well – except maybe by Jaki Byard at a few moments. At some level, the instrumentation reads like an old trad band – cornet, clarinet, trombone, bass clarinet – but the sounds here are definitely 21st Century – played by a great "gang" that includes Guillermo Gregorio on clarinet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Keefe Jackson on tenor, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on bass, and Frank Rosaly on drums. Berman's arrangements are wonderful – very offbeat, but swinging too – and titles include "Sugar", "Mobile & Blues", "Liza", "Cloudy", "One Train May Hide Another", and "Jada".

Elmer Bernstein at his greatest – working here with the best mix of drama and energy he could bring to a film score during this golden age – a perfect blend of older orchestrations and a new sort of emotion that was perfect for the 60s! The score follows strongly off some of Bernstein's best from the late 50s – and has that amazingly evocative way of setting a new scene with each new tune – an almost-visual way of putting things forward that works quite strongly, even away from the film! This great CD edition features a whopping 31 tracks in all – 21 numbers from the film, plus 10 more from the 1964 album, which offers a re-recording of the score. Titles include "Speak Of The Devil", "Forbidden Room", "New Star", "The Producer Asks For A Divorce", and "The Carpetbagger Blues".

Peter Bernstein really makes things kick here – thanks to a hip quartet that features Richard Wyands on piano, John Webber on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums! With a rhythm section like that, the session better cook – and it does so nicely, in the open freedom of the Smalls Live setting – with some long tracks that are awash in extended, exploratory solos from Bernstein – really showing off his skills on the guitar in a way you don't always get on some of his solo sessions, often with a nice raspy edge that reminds us of Kenny Burrell at his best from years back. Titles include the originals "Vida Blue" and "Sideburns" – plus "Say Little Mama Say", "Love Walked In", and "Stairway To The Stars".

3 lost vocal gems from 50s Paris! The set pulls together some rare eps on the Barclay and Fontana labels – all the picture of Left Bank hip! The first 8 tracks are by Harold Nicholas – singing in French and English with a swinging combo on tunes that include "Que Reste-t-il De Nos Amours?", "That Old Black Magic", "Teach Me Tonight", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" – in a style that's similar to early work by Claude Nougaro, but perhaps a bit more mellow. The next 4 tracks feature June Richmond singing with a hip group arranged by Quincy Jones – and featuring work by Billy Byers, Roger Guerin, Kenny Clarke, and Henri Renaud. Tracks on that set include "Sleep", "Everybody's Doing It", and "I've Gotta Right To Sing The Blues". The last two tracks are rare gems by Andy Bey and his sisters Salome and Geraldine – performing in the style of their classic Andy & The Bey Sisters albums in the US, and recorded in 1959, quite early in their career! Their two tracks are wonderful – and feature the trio grooving soulfully on the tunes "Smooth Sailin" and "Scoubidou".

Compelling work by this Chicago combo – a really unique ensemble led by a trombonist with a wide range of skills! Big James claims James Brown as a big inspiration, but he also came of age in the Chicago blues scene – which is where his horn-heavy combo has mostly found a home, playing their own Windy City variant of rootsy funk! There's definitely a blues bent to the music, but the sound is quite different than most other contemporary groups on the scene, too – not just because James' trombone is firmly in the lead, but also because the group have a great ear for strong funk and deep soul roots too. Titles include a cover of the P-Funk gem "Qualified 2 Satisfy" – plus original tunes "Da Coldest Man I Ever Knew", "Low Down Dirty Blues", "Never Loved Any 1 Like U", "A Happy Fool", and "Da Best Love I Never Had".

Way more than you might expect from the legendary Big Maybelle – a smoking collection of soulful tunes that goes way beyond her early blues of the 50s, and shows the lady to be one heck of a funky singer – on a par with the best 60s work from Etta James at Chess! The cuts here are pulled from Maybelle's Rojac recordings – rare indie tracks that hardly got much circulation at the time, but which make tremendous use of her powerful voice – re-fitting it for a whole new groove in the 60s – including socking soul numbers with plenty of punch, and a few laidback ballads that are dripping with deep soul! There's a total of 23 tracks in all on the set – not just rare singles and album tracks, but a few others we'd never seen before – a beautiful package that also features very detailed notes as well! Titles include "Careless Love", "Mama", "Love Is A Hurtin Thing", "Big Sweet Daddy", "I Can't Wait Any Longer", "Quittin Time", "Cold Cold Heart", "I Am Lost", "That's Life", "Why Was I Born", "Blame It On Your Love", and "Old Love Never Dies".

Amazing work from acoustic guitarist Don Bikoff – a 60s contemporary of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, but much more obscure than either of those legendary players! Yet Bikoff's got a very similar vibe – a style that's rooted in folk, but has broken way way past the genre – amazing acoustic guitar explorations that are filled with tones and timings that so many other players wouldn't discover until the 70s – yet still never be able to deliver with a freshness like this! The album's completely mesmerizing from the start – almost like the hypnotic air of Sandy Bull, without the hypnotic pyrotechnics – served up simply and sparely, in a way that leaves us breathless. Titles include "Today Has No Tomorrow", "Rindler's Metamorphosis", "The Ellipses Of Your Mind", "Bathing Prohibited In The River Styx", and "Riverside Park Blues".

The earliest work we've ever heard from tenorist Nat Birchall – a player who's really blown our minds with his recent albums from the UK! This set's from the late 90s, and already has Birchall really finding his voice – a freewheeling approach to tenor that's unlike most of his contemporaries, and definitely steeped in strong influences from the spiritual jazz generation! Yet while recent records have Nat in a more meditative mode, the sound here is almost more explosive – with echoes of 60s avant in the mix, amidst some bold rhythmic impulses from the group – almost with a quality that reminds us of some of those brilliant moments when an American soloist would combine with a European combo in the heady 60s scene. In addition to Birchall's tenor, the group also features John Hulme on trumpet and flugelhorn, Richard Wetherall on piano, Dave Tompkins on bass, and Danny Ward on drums – and titles include "Redemption", "Helix Nebula", "Unity Blues", "Passion Dance", and "Ism Schism".

A great focus for the Bill Black Combo – an album of bluesy tunes that seem to bring out a bit more soul than usual in their music – at least for this time in the group's history! Many of the numbers are older tracks that fall into the category of crossover blues – tunes played more by jazz artists than gritty bluesmen, which make them a good fit for the instrumental style of the combo – tuned a bit more towards the bluer side of the spectrum by the group's electric guitar and bass, and topped with some especially nice work on horns. Titles include "Basin Street Blues", "I'll Never Be Free", "Birth Of The Blues", "Peter Gunn", "Weary Blues", "St Louis Blues", and "Blues In The Night".

Pure genius from the hipper side of the LA scene – 2 rare early sessions from trombonist Lou Blackburn, both cut in collaboration with a young Horace Tapscott! The style here is quite hard to peg – a unique blend of soul jazz and modernism – handled with a key focus on unusual rhythms and timings. Blackburn's work on trombone is nicely matched with trumpet by Freddie Hill in the frontline – and the pair work together perfectly in a recasting of some of the modes explored by both instruments in the more mainstream side of the LA scene of the 50s. Tapscott's piano is not nearly as unbridled as in later years, but his presence here is clearly felt on the record – as there's a similar collaborative feel here to some of his later, larger, more spiritual groups. The albums are filled with great original tunes – and titles include "Harlem Bossa Nova", "New Frontier", "The Clan", "Scorpio", "Two Note Samba", "Grand Prix", "Jean Bleu", "Blues For Eurydice", and "Jazzanova". 19 tracks in all – and incredible throughout!

Hard hard hard soul from the great Cicero Blake – a singer who's better known these days for his down-home blues work, but who was a heck of a great soul artist in the 60s and 70s! This wonderfully-done set collects together 23 singles from Cicero's diverse recordings of the 60s and 70s – pulling together recordings that were issued on a variety of different labels, but when taken together show Blake to be an incredibly powerful singer, with a depth to rival that of his Chicago contemporaries, like Tyrone Davis or Syl Johnson! And honestly, even though we'd heard the odd single by Cicero here and there over the years, we'd never gotten a complete picture of his career until this wonderful set – and we're extra-thankful to the folks at Grapevine for doing such a great job on the notes and track selection. Titles include "See What Tomorrow Brings", "Sad Feeling", "Soul Of Pain", "Take It From Me", "Loving You Woman Is Everything", "Shing A Ling", "Here Comes The Heartache", "Should I Go", "Could This Be Love", "Face The Case", "Don't Wait Until Tomorrow", "Bad But Beautiful Bag", "Doin What Comes Naturally", "Dip My Dipper", "Be Good To Me", "Your Love Is Like A Boomerang", and a bonus 90s sweet soul number, "Don't Wanna Blow My Chance With You".

Killer work from the classic late 50s years of the Jazz Messengers – and an album that Blue Note didn't choose to release until the end of the 70s! The record's a historic one – as it mark's Wayne Shorter's first session with the group, and the first time that they recorded his great composition "Lester Left Town" – a wonderful tune that sounds a bit different here than on the later Jazz Messengers recording of the composition. Shorter's talent is already burning brightly at this point – as is that of trumpeter Lee Morgan – and other group members include Walter Davis Jr on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Blakey on drums. Titles include "Lester Left Town", "Haina", "The Midget", "Celine", and "Africaine", which has a guest appearance by Dizzy Reece on congas!

Quite an unusual record from Art Blakey – a rare big band session, recorded with a lineup that's quite different than the usual Jazz Messengers! Turns out, Blakey's quite good in this setting – and has the same firey energy to direct a larger ensemble that he has when working with a smaller quintet. The added players here really help him express some new musical ideas with greater depth – almost like the added percussionists on some of his drum-heavy Blue Note dates of the late 50s. Members of the group include John Coltrane and Al Cohn on tenor, Sahib Shihab on alto, Donald Byrd and Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Melba Liston on trombone, and Walter Bishop on piano – and titles include "Last Date", "The Outer World", "Midriff", "Tippin", and "Pristine".

One of the many albums that the Jazz Messengers recorded live at Birdland, and one that features a transitional lineup for the band that has new guard players Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, and old guard player Hank Mobley on tenor. Everyone grooves in a very hard fashion – and the set's an excellent link between the raw mid 50s version of the Messengers, and the groundbreaking 1960 edition. The set list of this first volume includes "Hipsippy Blues", "Justice", "Just Coolin", and a nice version of "Close Your Eyes".

The rarest of all of Art Blakey's percussion group projects – and quite possibly the best, too! The session features Blakey at the head of a strong mix of jazz and percussion players – with Art Taylor and Philly Joe Jones on the regular drum kit, Donald Byrd on trumpet and Ray Bryant on piano, and a host of assorted percussion work by the likes of Ray Barretto, Sabu Martinez, Victor Gonzalez, Julio Martinez, and others. The resultant sound is incredible – very full, rich, and earthy – and done in a way that interweaves African and Latin percussion styles with straighter American jazz! A few cuts have chanting by Blakey and Sabu – and titles include "The Feast", "Mirage", "Lamento Africano", "O'Tinde", "Swingin Kilts", "Dinga", "Reflection", and "Aghano".

An excellent live set by the Jazz Messengers – recorded in Paris in 1958, but with a hard heavy groove that's right up there with their best Blue Note work. The group at this time – Blakey, Bobby Timmons, Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, and Jymie Merritt – plays hard, heavy, and straight ahead, with no other interference from outside players – and the track list is a batch of classic Jazz Messenger standards, stretched out a bit longer than usual, with plenty of solo space! Titles include "Moanin", "Justice", "Whisper Not", "Blues March", and "I Remember Clifford".

A reissue of one of Blakey's best non-Blue Note sides from the late 50s, a killer album that sports a great lineup of the Jazz Messengers that included Jackie McLean, Johnny Griffin, Bill Hardman, Sam Dockery and Spanky DeBrest. The three of them sparkle and shine with the sort of brilliance that Blakey's leadership brings to the group, and they wail their way through a 13 minute long reading of "Night In Tunisia", with excellent solos all around, and the other cuts "Theory Of Art", "Couldn't It Be You?", "Evans", and "Off The Wall". This reissue adds the bonus number "Social Call" recorded for RCA at very nearly the same time, but with a larger group that features Wynton Kelly in place of Sam Dockery, plus the addition of Lee Morgan, Sahib Shihab, Melba Liston and Cecil Payne in the horn section.

Blue Magic getting a bit bolder than before – adding in some heavier funk that takes them past the mellow moments of their earliest years – yet still serving up some great harmonies in the process! The change is a subtle one – heard on some of the album's more hard-grooving tracks, which also bring in some full arrangements that echo the trippy feel of the cover – yet which still always respect that slight heartbreaking undercurrent of the group's great vocals, thanks to arrangements from Bobby Eli! Just about every moment from Blue Magic is totally great, and this album is no exception – with titles that include "Freak N Stein", "Mother Funk", "To Get Love", "See The Bedroom", "Summer Snow", "Making Love To A Memory", and "Spark Of Love".

A lost treasure – never-issued material from the legendary Blue Notes combo – and a set that really helps fill some space in their all-too-small recorded catalog! The set captures the group at the end of the 70s, working in their most openly-creative mode – a style that partly shows their strong roots in the South African jazz scene of the 60s, but which also really opens up with some of the freer modes of the following decade – hitting a mix of modes that's not unlike some of the AACM at their best, although often with a lot more intensity, too! The group at this point is a quartet – with Chris McGregor on piano, Johnny Dyani on bass, Louis Moholo on drums, and Dudu Pukwana on some especially amazing alto sax – blown with such righteous force, we might well say that his instrument is center stage on the record – were it not for the wonderfully complex rhythms from the other three group members too! Tracks are long, and filled with righteous soul – and titles inlcude "Ithi Gui", "Mange", "Lonta Uyagula", "Lakutshonga Ilanga", "The Bride", and "Funk Dem Dudu".
